Warner Bros. Creates DC Entertainment
Diane Nelson to Serve as President, DC Entertainment
Paul Levitz to Segue from President & Publisher of DC Comics to Writer, Contributing Editor and Overall Consultant to DC Entertainment
BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. (WBEI) has created DC Entertainment Inc., a new company founded to fully realize the power and value of the DC Comics brand and characters across all media and platforms, to be run by Diane Nelson, it was announced today by Barry Meyer, Chairman & CEO, and Alan Horn, President & COO, Warner Bros.
DC Entertainment, a separate division of WBEI, will be charged with strategically integrating the DC Comics business, brand and characters deeply into Warner Bros. Entertainment and all its content and distribution businesses. DC Entertainment, which will work with each of the Warner Bros. divisions, will also tap into the tremendous expertise the Studio has in building and sustaining franchises and prioritize DC properties as key titles and growth drivers across all of the Studio, including feature films, television, interactive entertainment, direct-to-consumer platforms and consumer products. The DC Comics publishing business will remain the cornerstone of DC Entertainment, releasing approximately 90 comic books through its various imprints and 30 graphic novels a month and continuing to build on its creative leadership in the comic book industry.
In her new role, Nelson will report to Jeff Robinov, President, Warner Bros. Pictures Group, in order to best capitalize on DC Entertainment’s theatrical development and production activities and their importance to drive its overall business with each of the divisions of Warner Bros.
Nelson will bring her expertise and more than 20 years’ experience in creative brand management, strategic marketing and content development and production to ensuring DC Entertainment’s dual mission of marshalling Warner Bros.’ resources to maximize the potential of the DC brand while remaining respectful of and collaborative with creators, talent, fans and source material. Additionally, Nelson will continue to oversee the franchise management of the Harry Potter property, which she has done since 2000, and also continue to represent the Studio's interests with the author of the Harry Potter books, J.K. Rowling. Nelson will segue from her post as President, Warner Premiere but maintain oversight responsibilities of that division. (An executive succession plan for Warner Premiere will be announced shortly.)
Paul Levitz, who has served as President & Publisher of DC Comics since 2002, will segue from that role to return to his roots as a writer for DC and become a contributing editor and overall consultant to DCE. This transition will take place as expeditiously as possible without disrupting DC’s business operations.
In his new role, Levitz will be called upon for his deep knowledge and more than three-decade history with DC Comics, both as a comic creator and an executive. Besides serving as a writer on a number of DC Comics titles, he will be a contributing editor and consultant to DC Entertainment on projects in various media. Additionally, he will consult as needed on the transition and integration of the DC Comics organization into DC Entertainment and will utilize his unique experience, knowledge and relationships with the comics industry’s creative community to help achieve DC Entertainment’s goal of maximizing the value of DC properties. Further, Levitz will advise DC Entertainment on creative and rights-holder relationships, in particular regarding the legacy relationships that have been a part of DC Comics for decades.
Widely recognized and respected for his support of writers, artists and creators in the comics industry, Levitz is best known creatively for his work with DC Comics, having written most of the classic DC characters, including Batman, Wonder Woman and the Superman newspaper strip. At Comicon International in 2008, Levitz was awarded the Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award as part of the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, the only industry executive ever so honored.
“DC Comics and its super hero characters are truly touchstones of popular culture, and the formation of DC Entertainment is a major step in our company’s efforts to realize the full potential of this incredible wellspring of creative properties,” said Meyer. “Diane knows our studio as a creative executive, a marketer and a senior manager, and this varied background will help her effectively and creatively integrate the DC brand and properties across all our businesses. We’re also thrilled that Paul will remain involved with DC and we’ll be able to tap his expertise to help us reach our goals for this new business.”
“It’s no secret that DC has myriad rich and untapped possibilities from its deep library of iconic and lesser-known characters,” said Horn. “While we’ve had great success in films and television, the formation of DC Entertainment will help us to bring more DC properties across additional platforms to fans around the world, while maintaining brand integrity and authenticity. Diane is a terrific choice to lead DC Entertainment, and with Paul in his new role as a valued consultant and contributing editor, both our company and comic fans win.”
“Based on the great success we’ve had working with DC Comics to create some of the most popular and successful super hero films of all time, I’ve long believed that there was much more we could do across all of Warner Bros.’ businesses with this great body of characters and stories,” said Robinov. “The prioritization of DC and the creation of DC Entertainment is a great opportunity that reaches far beyond the film group. There are endless creative possibilities to build upon the many significant successes already achieved by my colleagues Kevin Tsujihara and the Home Entertainment Group in the videogame, home video and direct-to-platform arenas and Bruce Rosenblum and the Television Group in live-action, animated and digital series. Collectively, we have the ability to grow a body of properties highlighting the iconic characters and the diversity of the creative output of DC Comics.”
“The founding of DC Entertainment fully recognizes our desire to provide both the DC properties and fans the type of content that is only possible through a concerted cross-company, multi-platform effort,” said Nelson. “DC Entertainment will help us to formally take the great working relationships between DC Comics and various Warner Bros. businesses to the next level in order to maximize every opportunity to bring DC’s unrivalled collection of titles and characters to life.”
“After so many roles at DC, it’s exciting to look forward to focusing on my writing and being able to remain a part of the company I love as it grows into its next stage,” said Levitz. “It’s a new golden age for comics and DC’s great characters, and I hope my new position will allow me to contribute to that magic time.”
DC Comics will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2010 (NEW FUN COMICS #1, the first DC comic, began publishing in 1935), at which time more explicit details regarding DC Entertainment’s corporate and management structure, film and content release slate, creative roster and business objectives will be unveiled at a multi-faceted anniversary celebration and press conference in the first quarter of the year.

Prior to being named President, DC Entertainment, Nelson most recently served as President, Warner Premiere since its founding in 2006. Warner Premiere is a Studio-based production company which develops and produces high-quality, direct-to-DVD and short-form digital content, including the highly successful line of DC Universe animated DVD titles, and also pioneered the development of the motion comics category. Under Nelson’s leadership, Warner Premiere functions as a full-service production entity with its own resources and release schedule, furthering the Studio's mandate of being a destination for both established and up-and-coming talent to create stand-alone properties as well as experiment in new media.
Before that, Nelson served as Executive Vice President, Global Brand Management, Warner Bros. Entertainment, with the primary responsibility of working cross-divisionally and throughout Time Warner to maximize and optimize all the various windows and outlets available to the Studio’s signature franchises, brands and event properties on a global basis. In this post, Nelson’s primary focus was the management of the Harry Potter brand, which she has overseen since the brand’s launch at the Studio in 1999. These efforts have helped drive the success of the brand to become the most successful film franchise of all time, as well as a respected consumer property that has generated billions of dollars for the Studio.
At Global Brand Management, Nelson and her team of more than 15 employees worked in all media and platforms to support a number of other key franchise properties, including “The Matrix Reloaded,” “The Matrix Revolutions,” “Batman Begins,” “The Dark Knight,” “Happy Feet,” “Polar Express” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” among others.
Prior to overseeing Global Brand Management, Nelson had served as Executive Vice President, Domestic Marketing, Warner Bros. Pictures. Nelson rose quickly through the ranks, having also served as Senior Vice President, Domestic Marketing, Warner Bros. Pictures and prior to that, Senior Vice President, Family Entertainment, Warner Bros. Corporate Worldwide Marketing and Planning. She was also Vice President, Worldwide Corporate Promotions, a post to which she was promoted in March 1998, after joining the Studio in September 1996 as Director of Worldwide Corporate Promotions.
Nelson came to the Studio from Walt Disney Records, where she served as Director of National Promotions. She is a graduate of Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Communications.

Makes sense to me.
-
Thats all i want from DC/warners bros
-
If you think about it, this is DC trying to match Marvel's spotlight. They have to compete in order to sell and get ahead. The question is: "Is DC going to treat their lesser known properties with the same gusto and fun as Marvel did with "IRON MAN" received last year?" Because there are only so many Batman movies you can put out every three years, and the Superman film was a misfire.
-
I have no real response to this.
-
Brandon Routh needs to be back on the screen in an action oriented Superman movie. With Warners finally realizing that they own a cash cow like DC Comics, a Superman Returns sequel doesn't seem so far-fetched. DC needs to have input into the movies like Marvel does, so we can avoid films like Catwoman or Steel. Imagine if they even tapped into the less famous characters. Maybe now we'll get that Waverider movie that was talked about years ago! Jean-Claude Van Damme is probably too old now, but I'd still like to see that crazy script get made.
-
..would be a Battle of the Network Stars(remember those?)type movie
-
I love it when fanboys complain about comic book movies. There's something ironic about that. so nerdy.
-
Hello, my name is Harvey Weinstein and boy do I have a deal for you.
-
Comic book sales sag.
-
Savage Dragon movie here we come.
-
It's sad to see a guy who put so much of himself into the business get shafted like this.Levitz is a comics geek from way back, and he's done a lot for writers and artists through the years, often when he didn't have to. So naturally WB throws him aside like a used kleenex. Ah, corporate culture. Fuckers.
-
That's bound to improve quality.
-
Disney exec's are checking their treasury at this moment to see if Scrooge McDuck can do another takeover.
-
I hear Arnold with be free soon.
-
In a Batman movie that isn't forged from the bitter tears of scorned fanboys
-
1. Lower comics pricepoint
2. Focus on D.C.'s more realistic universe of heroes and MARKET
3. Aggressively Incorporate major characters into WB television series' (Live action JLA, TEEN TITANS, Superman/Batman)
4. REBOOT SUPERMAN WITH NEW MYTHOS -
.. I hope this DOES turn into a full-blown pissing contest! Maybe then a Creeper or Phantom Stranger movie might accidentally get made. I'm serious.
-
Geez...can we give this guy the go ahead for Supes 2? Superman Returns was a masterpiece and they are letting Singer slip through their fingers. Ugh!
-
Especially since the current version of the Legion of Super-Heroes picks up after the end of Levitz's original run. I'm not sure what this restructuring bodes for DC Comics, but it's a good day to be a longtime Legion fan.
-
...AA was a lot of fun.
-
“It’s no secret that DC has myriad rich and untapped possibilities from its deep library of iconic and lesser-known characters.” READ: "There are still a bunch of shit-ass nobody characters we can exploit in pointless, overly-expensive, cgi spectacles that we will vomit into cinemas for years, further ruining the entertainment of going to the movies."
-
I always liked DC better than Marvel anyway.

Imagine if they combined comics with videogames into ONE MOVIE?!
by johnno
I want my Marvel Versus Capcom flick! If Dead or Alive and Alien Versus Predator got one I don't see why this couldn't! Nowhatimsayin?
-
Sadly the superhero movies in production all sound like ass.
If they want a good return DC Entertainment might be better off concentrating on the video games side of the business. They've got a fantastic new franchise in Batman: Arkham Asylum, been playing through it for the last week and am really enjoying it. -
shows just how fucked up Hollywood is at the moment.

A Martian Manhunter flick. Or Gorilla Grod. I also think they should do the JLA flick with Alex Ross style animation.

How exciting.
-
If implemented properly, it could align two currently dysfunctional pieces. I hope it works.
-
...then 95% of all comic adaptations. If everything were treated with that much effort and care we'd all be living in a good time.
-
It really doesn't seem like a hard franchise to crack. Maybe they could start with an action scene or two and a plot that doesn't involve a kid. Superman Returns did bigger B.O. than Batman Begins, it just cost more. And it was lousy, so they can't really expect a sequel to do Dark Knight numbers. But that's not to say people won't lose their shit over a Superman franchise if they pumped a bit of life into the the property. That proposed Mark Millar trilogy would be pretty epic.
-
For a second I thought it was saying Marvel and Disney had merged with DC... Imagine all those Amalgam comics being made into movies.
-
That needs making. It'll be a cool, special ops/adult A-Team-type movie.
-
I'm sure he'd rather have been put out to stud.
-
multiple platforms... content.... quarterly objectives = We're a bunch of unfeeling comic book hating robots who wouldnt know a red cape from our dick in the ground. Cant wait to see what this gang of calculators churns out... sheesh.
-
Are you new to press releases? They all sound like that, whether the company is awesome or stupid. It's not much of a predictor for results.
Given how screwed up the DC/WB movie efforts have been lately (excepting Nolan's Batman), I like the idea of integrating DC into the movie side more. Of course, it could all turn to shit, but if they're just trying to emulate Marvel's approach...well, that ain't a dumb idea. -
they should quit stroking batman and superman's cock and start adapting some of the other great characters they own.
-
No brainer for WB to finally take full control of DC, not saying its a good thing, but Disney/Marvel lit a fire under their ass to have synergy with their DC properties. It won't be long until Sony, Universal and Paramount get in on the act- who's next on the shopping list? Dark Horse? Image? Or buying parts of Image such as Jim Lee's Wildstorm?- Peronally I'd love to see a Wildcats movie with Josh Holloway as Grifter and Jolene Blalock as Lady Zealot- huge fan of Wildcats back in the day!

They could use this time to remake Wonder Woman's origins.
by dailysportspages
Diane is an archeologist.
She is currently in the Peace Corps volunteering building homes, treating the sick, and working for the plight of women in the Kurdish area of Iraq. She had previously worked in Africa helping the women who had been victims of sexual abuse and clitoral mutilation.
She has experienced strange life-like dreams all of her life. Dreams that she has never been able to properly understand.
In these dreams she is a warrior who trains intensively and prepares for glorious battle.
When she awakens she can barely remember her dreams, but can feel them in her aching muscles.
She continues to work hard in her job for the Peace Corp.
Something inside tells her that she needs to help people who are in areas ravaged by war, women specially who seem to always be the unheard victims in such conflicts.
Lately she has been dreaming of something more, he dreams have left her with a sense that something is coming, that the time for her to make her mark is at hand... but she does not understand what that means.
What she does know is that she needs to travel north into the perilous mountain region. Something inside her is drawing her towards these mountains. Yet she doesnt know what or why.
Deep into the mountains she discovers an ancient set of large decrepit stones in what seems to be a circular pattern.
Her instincts tell her that this is a perfect location for an archeological dig.
She works day and night for the next week and discovers that under those rocks lay another set of stones... except these stones are not stones but sculpted marble.
As she studies the stones she realizes that they are imprinted with an ancient language that she is familiar with, although she is certain it is not a language she has studied or encountered before.
As she reads the text engraved unto the large stones she realizes that it is written in prophetic form.
The prophecy states that the warring nations of men will culminate their efforts upon these lands and bring forth the most devastating war in worlds history. A war so destructive that it leads to the eventually destruction of humanity. And that humanity is brought to extinction when this man caused war poisons the life giving womb of the world.
The final stone ends with a command to the reader. It says that the person who reads this stone is not reading it by accident, but has been called to the stone. It commands that the person called to the stone must break this and all 6 of the stones in order to fulfill her calling as the Champion of Peace.
Diana being an archeologist does not want to break the stones, but she is compelled to do so.
She finds a lasso, breastplate armor, winged sandals, a head circlet, a sword, and a pair of bracelets.
Fixating on the bracelets she notices an inner transcription: "Champion of Athena".
Without even knowing it she is already putting on the bracelets.
When she puts them on a volume of vivid images rush through her mind.
All of those dreams she has in her life come back to her.
She realizes that those were not simply dreams, but preparations for this day.
Diana is flooded with all sorts of knowledge that uncovers the potential hidden inside her all these years through those dreams.
She comes to know the history of the bracelets, the ancient fighting arts, the various languages of the world, how each of the 6 items she has found will grant her a great boon in order to help her in her fight, how far back her Greek heritage actually goes, and why she was called to the bracelets and why now.
She has to stop this coming World War, she has to bring peace at all costs... because she is the prophesied Wonder Woman.

WONDER WOMAN: Should be suitably epic, with a firm grounding in mythology. Much like the rumored approach to Marvel's THOR, it should be set firmly in the distant past of the DC Universe, focusing on the battle for the throne of Olympus, the Amazons' role in that battle, and the creation of Diana as the supreme Amazon warrior. Hell, use the last post's plot. Just make it bloody, brutal, and epic.
SUPERMAN: Reboot this franchise, show the destruction of Krypton, perhaps even have the Science Council wondering why the Guardians aren't helping them, and focus on the Metropolis story with a heavy focus on how Supermans's appearance upsets Luthor's applecart.
GREEN LANTERN: Sci-fi the hell out of this franchise. The death of Abin Sur and the portents of the Blackest Night. The selection of Jordan and his education by Sinestro. End the first film with the fall of Sinestro in battle with Hal, and tease the rise of the Sinestro Corps.
GREEN ARROW: Batman with a bow. Plan and simple.
MARTIAN MANHUNTER: Go noir, maybe even set it in the 40s with a great detective story, and end with him sort of sliding into obscurity, until such time as the world is ready to accept an alien among them.
THE FLASH: Fast, fast, fast. Use Captain Cold as the major villain in the first one, and use Barry as well. The continuing theme of detective work, perhaps even have Captain John Jones in charge of Barry's section.
Building to a JLA flick: Why weren't the guardians able to prevent the destruction of Krypton? What destroyed life on Mars? Has it ever come to Earth? If it did, maybe it was the Olympians who stopped it before. They're gone now, so who stands for Earth? Who can fill in for Hermes, Zeus, Athena, and the rest? I bet the telepath who's been kicking it on Earth knows...

Well, okay... *everybody* in Hollywood wants attention, so that's nothing new. Still, the press release does sound like some executive at Warners came to a meeting after the Disney/Marvel deal and said "What comic company can we buy? Wait... what do you mean we already own one?"
Still, reshuffling of suits aside, it'll be interesting to see what comes from this... It sounds more likely that there may be interference in the comics over at the WB than it does with the Disney/Marvel deal, but I could be interpreting it wrong. Reactionary stuff like this tends to worry me, though. -
I love DC, but they have always followed Marvel. They may have been around longer, but DC follows Marvel. When Marvel reinvented itself and it's heroes in the early 60's, DC did as well. Now we have DC entertainment. Yes, they had to step it up but they really need smarter people working for them. They should have been a film production powerhouse a loooonng time ago. They could have come up with a better name than "DC Entertainment". And doing it right now after the big Marvel/Disney announcement shows such desperation and fear. Kind of embarrassing.

This is good!

Doomsayers have been saying the bubble is going to burst since 2003 when Hulk and Daredevil came out... Are we approaching the time now? It seems like if 2008 can see Incredible Hulk, Dark Knight, Iron Man, Hellboy II, Wanted, and Hancock all make a decent amount of money, one of them becoming the most successful movie in 10 years, we're far from seeing the end of the superhero movie. I suppose Iron Man 2 will dictate what the market demand looks like.

and screw that guy who suggested a Batman series on The CW. Screw him hard ....with a screwdriver!
-
Since the dollar is crashing, they may have to abandon Australia as a location. Merrick, you hear anything new on this yet?
-
You heard it here first.
-
That would have been a great start to a Green Lantern franchise. I ain't that disappointed though, its still a great animated movie.

I'm guessing this chick knows two things about DC Comics
by indycollector
Jack and shit.
-
Disney got the short end of the stick with that deal. Joe Quesada has run Marvel into the ground.
-
Seriously...doesn't that studio product shit like Hannah Montana and Wizards of Waverly...do you want them to touch your dark and terrible super heroes?
-
And named him Harry Potter.
-
The story of Diane Nelson taking the "top" spot at DC actually broke on August 25/26 a few days before the Marvel buyout hit the waves. It was left ambiguous as to what role Levitz would play but since the word is that Levitz and Diddio don't get along, and WB higher ups like Diddio, I figured he was out as a controlling factor at DC Comics.
-
That's all I ask for in both the case of Disney and Marvel. Yes, sink development time and money into the big guys (Cap, Superman, Batman). But come on. You made The Dark Knight. ROLL THE DICE already and give us moderately budgeted content: Sandman Mystery Theatre, an all practical Hawkman/Hawkgirl romance...
Batman Begins was expensive, yes, but it was still modest. A gamble, but a smart one. Do that every year, and more stuff will stick than will not. -
...where he's traveling the world for those nine years learning how to discipline himself does somewhat interest me. But I would never encourage it, as I would never believe it would be handled correctly.
-
BLOWS!
My God, look at that list and compare it with MARVEL's. There's no contest. Hopefully, "DC Entertainment" will finally get off its ass and do something big. There was so much talk years ago about a Superman vs Batman movie. They should start with a bang and finally make that film. Make it outrageous and live action and knock it out of the ballpark. DCE, needs to play hard ball immediately if it wants to be any kind of threat to the new Disney/Marvel.
They can do it by hitting the entertainment world with something big and explosive. -
...with their stupid 'Brand New Day' bullshit. But their characters are flat out awesome and people will be loving those characters a hundred years from now, if not a thousand years from now. Disney made a smart decision. I can't wait for a well-made FF movie.
-
I disagree. Rather than a publicity stunt, they should start smart with a high B-level character the way Marvel did. They introduced the "Marvel Entertainment" brand with Iron Man and just made a solid, straight-forward, good adventure movie. There's no reason they can't do the same with Green Lantern or The Flash. Make a good-looking, well-written movie that everyone can relate to, and boom- brand loyalty out da ass.
-
Fucking Iron Patriot with his Cabal of Bryan Singer, Ryan Reynolds, and the head of Walt Disney. he wants fanboys to suffer for years of green goblin backlash
-
... when Diane Carter would twirl around with her arms out? If she were topless, I'd pay $12.00 to watch that for 2 hours, then buy the DVD.
-
There I said it. I DO NOT want a watered down "family" film from my Marvel characters. Hopefully, they leave well enough alone like they do with Pixar. As for DC. . . get your asses in gear! I want to see Green Lantern and The Flash be as good (if not better) than IRON MAN. Make it happen.
-
The film industry has changed dramatically over past 3 years. With major contention from not just other comic book movies but video games and cartoons ala Transformers and G.I. JOE, etc. The level of production and SFX has also upped the ante quite a bit. Marvel has had it's hat in the ring for a while now. Their films have been pretty successful for the past 10 years. They could afford to throw in a B-level character in the middle of its success. BUT DC doesn't have that fortune right now. They need to come in strong and make a statement. DC has to contend with a huge roster of Marvel characters getting their own movies and then being combined into one major superhero epic. It's called the AVENGERS. DC has no choice but to compete with that, so they NEED to go big or they'll end up unnoticed in the shadow of the Avengers.
-
Dammit. Princess Diana + Lynda Carter + twirling boobs = mistake. My geek card has 2 more points taken off it.
-
I swear, what the fuck is DC doing? They have full control over ALL of their characters (well at least until the Superman lawsuit), yet we just see one hero at a time in their fuckin' movies. Dive into your universe and show us other heroes already DC. Stick the Flash in the new Batman movie, or Martian Manhunter in Superman, or put Hawkman in the Wonder Woman movie......or a LIVE ACTION JUSTICE LEAGUE MOVIE!! How hard can this fuckin' be??
-
comic book movie oversaturization, and stop going. I predict in a decade or so, we will start seeing reboots of Spider-man, Batman (no matter how definitive Nolan's version will be) Hollywood seriously needs to think smaller and start investing in legitimate original talent like Blomkamp.
-
I was happy with DC because they were being really selective and small-time with their films. Not releasing fucking 12 movies a year like Marvel. This is just going to lead to even larger saturation of these films and people will get sick of them faster (including me).
-
One of the best games I've played all year. Which is surprising considering the fact that it's a licensed game, and a Batman game to boot. Batman >>>>> all
-
Your Wonder Woman sounds alot like Isis.
-
Never gonna happen. The Hernandez Bros. are ridiculous control freaks and though they've been courted by a number of creator-friendly people to get the flick(s) on the go they are sticking to their guns. Basically, a Love and Rockets movie or series will only happen if someone drives up the hacienda of Los Bros Hernandez with millions of dollars, dumps it on the lawn, and says "make your movie". Due to the fact that will never happen a L&R movie will also never happen.
-
We've seen countless adaptations of Batman over the years, but it still fills the seats, and no one's complaining. Every decade gives you a new generation to taint, fresh blood to squeeze for every cinematic dollar they're worth.
Yes, we will see more Batman and Spiderman in a decade, and no one will care. -
Hey yallz...i'm in a contest to win a contract with DC Comics right now! Please go over to www.zuda.com and vote for my sci-fi comic Goldilock!
I need my AICN peeps to help me out! I'm facing teams of creators by myself so let's do this! :) -
The Dark Knight should give them the confidence and head start they need to kick off a string of solid productions. They kind of already have made that statement that you mentioned. I agree they should go big with Superman or Wonder Woman or JLA, but that's going to take three years to really work well. I'm saying greenlight a solid Flash or Green Arrow or Green Lantern or Star Man script today and see how it goes.
-
Who wins? We do.
-
I'M FUCKING TIRED OF COMIC BOOK MOVIES!!!
-
...never mind dull "origins" movies, just get stuck into a full-on superhero epic!!
-
Really what the fuck WB and DC we're going to get a fucking Lobo movie before a Flash movie. Fuck that shit.
-
as a beat em up videogame.it would rock.

So DC's only significant movie in the pipe is Green Lantern?
by snookeroo
And THAT'S still two years away??Way to bust a move, guys.
-
Now can we get a live-action Justice League movie?
-
Let's hear it.
-
I've heard conflicting stories...
-
I'm looking forward to that the most.
-
I heard he's more of a hero. Of course, I could be wrong but he's the dude at WB who was trying to champion the DC movies but Alan Horn was too sluggish about it. Also, Robinov is the guy who gave Chris Nolan his shot at batman, and Alfonso Cuaron at Harry Potter..
-
He believes in matching artists with material and giving them a fairly wide berth. Compared to a guy like Rothman he's a saint.
-
Is a great place for a filmmaker to be? They serve as a shelter for Scorsese and Eastwood, and put guys like Cuaron and Nolan on giant franchises. Speaking of which, has there been a franchise handled with more smarts and care than Harry Potter? I trust these guys, although I'll admit Jonah Hex looks like it'll be terrible.
-
Dude, love how you stuck with Levitz, that's a cool thing right there, I think they call that Loyalty... Good work.
-
DC did not follow Marvel in the 60s. When DC reinvented Flash and Green Lantern and created the teamup Justice League, Stan Lee was told to make his own superteam and made the Fantastic Four. Then the others followed.
I read Robinov really pushed Nolan to make the Joker the character that he was in Dark Knight i.e. with no specific goal, background, agenda.
DC/WB did not follow Marvel/Disney with this. Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood says Robinov has been trying to establish this for two years, since Jan. 2007.
Vote Fa Stokes Brutha- WB also had that long deal with Kubrick. -
Superman has to fight someonw who is STRONGER than he is. When was the last time Lex's plan made you think "Damn, how's Superman ever to get out of this one?" Answer: NEVER.
-
On The Hollywood Saloon they were talking about pulling out that Kubrick Kontract and handing it to Nolan. I say do it!RE: Superman's Power - I say depower him to Golden Age levels, then pit him against Apokolips.
-
wonder woman will be T&A spectacle instead of a suitably awesome movie with some T&A.
-
Until you actually make good movies out of the title characters, you are still second fucking fiddle to Marvel in the media arena--which is sad because you were ahead for so long but now you're just playing catch up and so badly. The only title you have any confidence in is STILL Batman even though Superman Returns was not unrecoverable. Even if you totally reworked it like Hulk you could have, but you don't. You've had Green Lantern almost in development forever. It's embarrassing. Oh, and you might make a Lobo movie? I couldn't care less about Lobo unless he's fighting Superman on War World. That like back when Marvel made a Blade movie--and shit, you guys almost envy that move because so far all your titles outside of Batman and Superman have one less movie than Wesley fucking Snipes as the badass Shaft version of Buffy. You even cast one of his sidekicks in one of his sequels as your next big thing in Green Lantern! I laugh at how lame you are right now, WB, and I've been a bigger DC fan than a Marvel fan for a long time. Get off your asses! Make these movies, make them good, and get the know-it all cooks out of the kitchen. There's got to be someone out there who would make a movie out of these properties. Also, get rid of this shit that prevents you from using the supporting characters in multiple titles. I mean no way is it right that Nightwing or Robin cannot be in Teen Titans and JL and Batman all at the same time. Fuck, who cares, you don't have vision. I pity you. I pity myself more for loving the DC cast more than the Marvel one. They're in the hands of such dipshits.

Establish a timeline: "Superman 1 & 2" take place five years before "Batman Begins", which happens two years after Superman leaves Earth. "Superman Returns" happens one year AFTER "The Dark Knight." Next up: "The Man of Steel" starring Routh and Spacey. Lex Luthor goes to work for the government in case Superman disappears again or more Kryptonians show up, with a de-powered Zod as secret assistance. Luthor creates Bizarro who "accidentally" goes after Superman. Brainiac, the Kryptonian supercomputer that Jor-El used to predict the end of Krypton detects Lex's "New Krypton" that Superman sent into space, goes to Earth to investigate. Zod steals Lex's duplicate Kryptonian crystals which (as Lex intended) turn him into Doomsday. Lex builds a one-time use only Phantom Zone projector to send Doomsday away, but aims at Superman during the fight. Superman's son manifests his flight ability and takes the shot for his dad, sending the boy to the Phantom Zone.
Now...THE FLASH (Barry Allen) arrives in Metropolis to help, but Superman has Flash concentrate on the city while Superman holds off Doomsday...as Brainiac arrives. Worst Day Ever. How does it end? Superman dies fighting Doomsday and Bizarro and Lex Luthor leads the human resistance against Brainiac, Doomsday, and Bizarro along with the Flash. Lex is forced to begrudgingly revive Superman to try to save the world, and since Superman alone can't do it...
As Superman faces death at Doomsday and Bizarro's hands yet again, there's a blur of blue and red that takes Bizarro out of the fight--it's the Superman of the 25th Century--Clark Kent and Lois Lane's son, released from the Phantom Zone by the Legion of Super-Heroes in the 25th Century and returned. The Flash dies destroying Brainiac's power source and Supermen save the day. There's a tearful reunion with mom and dad, but Superman II returns to the future where he's grown accustomed to living (and met a girl) along with a mysterious green-skinned member of the Legion who tells Kal-El "maybe I shouldn't tell you my name just yet." Now that's a two-movie deal. The next movie takes place after Batman 3 (which acknowledges Superman and the events in Metropolis) and is titled "Justice League" Which introduces Wonder Woman, the Wally West Flash, brings in Green Lantern, establishes that Batman protects Gotham first and therefore isn't always around, and Superman may or may not be concious for the whole thing--which happens to be Darkseid's invasion of Earth. Whew. That was off the cuff. Sorry to take up so much of your time, y'all, and I hope my line breaks worked. I just wanted this off my chest. -
Involving Rip Hunter as the unseen watcher who intervenes against whatever code he follows, and rescues Superman Jr. from the Phantom Zone. I dunno. The more I write, the more convoluted it gets. But turning Zod into Doomsday works for me.
-
That thinks "clitoral mutilation" would never make its way into a comic book movie? Perhaps I'm bananas.
-
That's one hell of a concept. i actually really like it. I think the only problem with your idea is that the majority of the movie-going public wouldn't know who half of these characters are.
-
they're making.Jonah Hex might be fun, but the rest sound like ass.
If they knew what the hell they were doing they'd go with The New Gods as a movie or The Sandman ( imagine someone like David Fincher bringing Dream and Death to the big screen) or even Shazam!.They need to leave Superman or Batman movies alone for awhile. They're not going to top The Dark Knight any time soon and their attempts at Superman have been shit.
The difference between Marvel's flicks and this new DC Entertainment is that Marvel is calling the shots with their stuff.DC Entertainment is still basically the pinheads at Warners throwing shit at a wall then doing market tests to see if any of sticks. -
What does a bitch know about comics? Seriously...Diiaannnneeee...
-
DC Entertainment can distinguish itself from Marvel by doing stories that are particularly crime drama-esque superhero/action movies.Such a strategy would also be a huge hat tip to the old Warner Bros gangster/tough guy movies which were its claim to fame.
-
Could be done by following that "archeologist/humanitarian takes on the Wonder Woman mantle on the bring of World War III".
It servers a lot of purposes.
1. Establishes an earthly/modern origin for WW.
2. Puts the mythical aspects in dreams set in some far off past, real or imagined. Removing them from the characters personal life story. Something that would make a movie set in a quasi believable "realistic" universe kinda tough.
3. Removes the World War 2 aspects of her storyline but updates it with involvement in the looming World War 3... kinda tying her back to some sort of global war, as per usual for her character.
4. We still get to see glimpses of Themyscira and the Amazons through Dianas dream/training sequences.
5. She is no longer a figment of mythology who has been living on some secret magical floating island, but a modern woman who happens to inherit the Wonder Woman mantle. But make no mistake, she IS the Wonder Woman we all know.
6. She is an orphan who never knew her parents, but has always felt like the woman in her dreams was her mother. And that ties things back to the mythos even more. Her guide in the dreams is her spiritual mother... Hippolyta.
7. And thats because Hippolyta IS Dianas mother. You can bring it all full circle with further dream or vision sequences in a sequel. Hippolyta knowing that no Amazon born on Paradise Island could possibly have enough sympathy/empathy towards the world of men... decides to leave the island while pregnant in order to have the child here. Or alternatively you could make it a story of the impending doom of Paradise Island. A Moses story. Things are about to go south there so Hippolyta takes her newborn child and places her in an American orphanage in order for one last Amazon to survive/saver her only child.
8. Yes we can keep the cheesy star spangled shorts/bikini/thong, and have it actually make some sense. How?
Easy. When Diana is in her dreams she is wearing traditional Amazonian armor. With its phoenix inspired breastplate, its golden sheen, and its sole star decoration here and there. That imo is a great look, but not the iconic one we all know.
But why would Wonder Woman wear the US flag on her crotch?
In the comics it was because she went to WW1 and 2 on the side of the US. But why would she go fight a mans war based on politics and territory?
WW3 is on the horizon, and this war could wipe humanity out completely, at least thats what the prophecy she discovered foretold. She is here in the US, grew up here, so that lends some credence as to why she would wear the US flag as her "bottoms"... but there should be a little more.
And that would be that the US at the time of the movie/war has a woman president at the helm.
There is your little bit of feminism bent inherent in the Wonder Woman mythos... without hitting you over the head with it. Since she is going to fight on the side of the US in this war, the president feels she should represent the country in some sort of uniformed fashion. So she gives her the star inspired trunks. Three stars only, one on each hip and one in the middle.
Or you can skip the whole retarded bikini and make her bottoms be part of the Amazonian armor that she finds. A short form fitting banded leather kilt. Blue of course, with the Greek star in various positions in the center and at the blades that fall down from the kilt.
Her armor should definitely be based on this http://tinyurl.com/kk9ddc
9. Steve Trevor should be developed, either as a father figure, a military liaison, or simply the hunky guy that pines over her. Its really not important what he is, as long as he's there and is actually more than just eye candy. He needs to be his Lois Lane/Commissioner Gordon.
10. The invisible plane... sorry folks, there is just no way to bring that into any sort of reality... except!
After a team up JLA movie where Wonder Woman saves Batmans life, the guy decides to build her a plane with the most advanced anti-detection systems around. Invisible to any detection technology currently employed, and even near invisible to the naked eye due to its use of high value radio waves, refraction, and mirrored surface. Its nigh invisible :)
These things can ground the movie in a semi modern reality, slowly unveil the more mythic elements as the series advances, have her powers not be overwhelmingly powerful right off the bat (she has only limited natural abilities, much like a peak human such as Batman, but gains her powers from her collection of 6 Amazonian items which will eventually unlock her own natural Amazonian inner power), make her a kick ass warrior that can actually fight alongside the other characters and not just be some waif that stands in the sidelines throwing her lasso around, all while using mostly all of her original elements while only moving them around a bit in order to have them fit better in this modern setting.
Its still Wonder Woman, except now you can have her and Batman in the same universe created by the Nolans.

I'm more optimistic about this than Disney's plans for Marvel

Finally!!!

I hope this bodes well for the DC Universe.

Don't EVER expect to see a decent DC Comic movie again. I remember when an episode of the JLU cartoon had to use a piss poor substitute for the Justice Society cause they couldn't manage to get the rights to their own characters.....
-
More than a handful of people who actually love and understand the product in important decision making positions...
-
Mark My Words. And it will take another 5 years before they even realize it.
-
This won't mean one iota in making a good movie out of a DC property. It's just a shuffle of executive suits at Time Warner. Big deal.
-
You know that's what they'll gun for.....they'll have plenty of other super hero hits, but The Dark Knight or a Christoper Nolan bat fliq will still hold crown critically and financially for at least 2 decades, you can quote me on that.
-
Seriously, if EVER there was a character that should be easy to put on screen...that people are predisposed to like and would LOVE to go see a big screen, summer movie about...filled with action and SFX...it would be Superman.Everyone in the world knows a Superman flick that harkens back to the tone of the Fleisher cartoons -- where Clark wasn't a total buffoon and Superman wasn't able to move planets, but could still kick giant robot ass -- would totally rule.Yet instead of giving us something like that...and instead of Warners giving a blank check to someone like Michael Bay who probably would make a great Superman movie, filled with shit going on and lots of American flag waving...Warners turns right around and hires someone like Singer who shitted out a truly horrible movie filled with so many plot holes that it's even embarrassing that the script was greenlit to begin with. And don't get me started on the sheer IDIOCY of making Superman a semi-stalker of Lois, a deadbeat dad, and even giving a character like Superman an out of wedlock son.Having recently rewatched SUPERMAN RETURNS on FX the other week, it's really amazing to me -- even in terms of Hollywood, which can be Fuck-up Central whenever it comes to doing anything right -- how a major studio with a blank check book and with such a huge vested interest in a property like Superman utterly SHITTED OUT that movie. I still can't believe between the time spent developing a new Superman movie and what eventually reached the screen how much money got flushed away on SR and on Singer and on making such utter crap.
-
I really dread getting into another SUPERMAN RETURNS discussion because I'm so done talking about that movie---but I've read that one of the reasons it was underwhelming as it was: rumors are Singer spent most of the production figuratively with his head in a giant mountain of coke, like in Scarface.

they boast about having access to these vast pools of characters but continue to obsess about the same 4 or 5 ones over and over again. Will we ever see treatments for New Gods? Challengers of the Unknown? OMAC? Kamandi? The Demon? Doom Patrol? The Question? Phantom Stranger? The Haunted Tank? Blackhawk? The Creeper? thousands of others?.. Nope. Just Batman, Superman and friends ad infinitum. Kind of a waste of assets if you ask me. Yeah we got PG-13 Lobo coming... and maybe GL but they seriously need to dig deeper. You too Marvel.

Five, maybe ten years down the line DC is gonna get sold
by eveelcapitalist
Spin them off into a new corporation, double their profitablity, raise their stock price and SELL! SELL! SELL!
This is bad news (sayeth the eveel capitalist).
As a coincidence, Diane Nelson used to work for Disney. No shit.
