Netflix Streamers: See The Newly Restored WIZARD OF OZ In HD...Free...For One Day Only...
Merrick here...
Thought some of you WIZARD OF OZ fans might be interested in this upcoming (and pretty cool) opportunity from Netflix. Per a press release:
Netflix, Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX), the world's largest online movie rental service, today announced that it will treat America to a free and commercially uninterrupted online screening of the newly restored 1939 classic, " The Wizard of Oz ," on Saturday, October 3, 2009. The film, celebrating its 70th anniversary this year and to be reissued later this month by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group, can be instantly streamed for free for 24 hours, from 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time on Saturday, October 3 to 9:00 a.m. Eastern the following day, by visiting www.netflix.com/wizardofoz.
While anyone in America can instantly watch "The Wizard of Oz" online on a computer on October 3, Netflix members on an unlimited plan will be able to instantly watch "The Wizard of Oz" in hi-definition on their TVs via a range of Netflix ready devices. Those devices include Netflix ready Blu-ray disc players and new Internet TVs from LG Electronics; Blu-ray disc players from Samsung; the Roku digital video player; Microsoft's Xbox 360 game console; and TiVo digital video recorders.
[EDIT]
Instantly watching movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix has become an increasingly popular way for members to enjoy the service. With an unlimited membership, Netflix members can instantly watch unlimited movies and TV episodes streamed to their TVs and computers and can receive unlimited DVDs delivered quickly to their homes. Members can choose from over 17,000 movies and TV episodes that can be watched instantly and over 100,000 titles on DVD and a growing number on Blu-ray.
The instant streaming of "The Wizard of Oz" over the Internet on October 3 is being powered by Microsoft Silverlight(TM), a web browser plug-in that works with Windows and Mac operating systems, as well as all major browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer. Silverlight installs in less than 10 seconds for new users, without requiring a system restart. When viewers click the "Play" button, "The Wizard of Oz" will begin playing in as little as 30 seconds. Viewers will also have the option of fast-forwarding, rewinding and pausing the video stream.
"Making a movie of this stature available for free over the Internet on an uninterrupted basis is a first," said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix. "At the same time, it's a great opportunity for people to get a taste of what instantly watching movies streamed from Netflix is all about. We're thrilled to be able to do this on both scores."
Warner Bros. Entertainment has for the past year been celebrating the 70th anniversary of this iconic film with a slate of spectacular festivities spanning the globe. Events included exhibitions of "The Ruby Slipper Collection," consisting of 20 noted designers re-imagining Dorothy's famous ruby slippers for modern times, as well as "The Inspirations of Oz" collection of fine art, featuring one-of-a-kind interpretive works by acclaimed artisans.
Additional information on all of the Netflix "The Wizard of Oz" events can be found at www.netflix.com/wizardofoz.
This same restoration of the film will be issued on Blu-Ray (marking the title's debut on that format) later this month; it can be pre-ordered HERE

If Oprah can't get me some fucking grilled chicken, what chance I'm getting some hi-res Munchkin action?
-
....that i could use netflix
* Sob * -
I mean, it's not "Twisted" or "Xtreme" or even "Ultimate". How can this be classic if there's no bondage or violence in it? Sure, there's fireballs, but that Gawddamn Scarecrow didn't dodge for shit.
-
Give me a disc any day.
-
I want all of those guys to die of syphilis.
As for Wizard of Oz, ever notice how much Burt Lahr "fags" up the cowardly lion and at one point where he does it when they are all singing and skipping together, Jack Haley, who I think really was gay makes it a point to look away when Burt is doing the limp wristed action? Just noticed a few months ago when I re-watched WoZ for the millionth time. -
Had a son, Jack Haley Jr., who was once married to Liza Minelli (yep, daughter of Dorothy married son of Tin Man). Heh. Anyway, the Lion wasn't meant to be gay. The dichotomy of a supposedly fearsome beast cringing and crying was supposed to be comedic. How does that make him gay? Are all gay men cringing cowards? I'm asking because I wouldn't know.
-
He was married for quite a while and had kids...one of whom, incidentally, was married to gay icon Liza Minnelli. Sometimes marriage means nothing (especially in Hollywood), but it could mean he was just a big, tin metrosexual.
-
It's very difficult to actually get it to stream HD, no matter how high your bandwidth is. And when it does work, it's such crappy HD it isn't even worth it. Most of their streaming transfers are crushed down so far that you can't tell what teh fuck is going on in night scenes. And of course the sound is SHIT!My advice: Just Netflix the fucking Blu-ray when it comes out.

We all know Liza Minelli only marries STRAIGHT GUYS!
by revenge_of_fett
Yes, Wizard of Oz is overflowing with gayness. Let's face it, if it came out today we'd all have a laugh cutting it to ribbons.
-
i am with ZombieHeathLedger... it should be called Doucherage... stupid ass show... hey, lets get a bunch of frat looking guys together and have them bang hot chicks and live up the rich life. stupid.
-
Watch it again, he does a lot of the "gay stereotype mannerisms" like when he sings "just a sissy" he does the thing with the limp wrist action. There's a few other things Bert Lahr does in there, too, to make The Cowardly Lion very effete. As for Jack Haley, there's tons of gay men who are married and have children. As I said, I watched again recently and his eye rolls, head tilts and eye flutters came off as slightly gayish. I mean, I know he's supposed to be the "sensitive one" in search of a heart but I agree with REVENGE of FETT, it's overflowing with gayness.
-
Will the stream be also avaible with a non US IP?
If no, is there a proxy that I can connect to in order to have a US IP and watch the quality of restoration made to that wonderful movie?
-
WTF? Why y'all hatin on the Entourage? Who the doesn't wanna be a Hollywood douche and bang hot chicks everyday? Who doesn't want a handjob from Jamie Lynn Sigler? Drive fucking Ferraris, and when your bored of the car, just walk up and down the street all day with your homies. Okay, it does sound pretty dumb, but it's fantasy and every fucking one of us straight guys wants to be VINCENT "AQUAMAN" CHASE
-
or WHY IS EVERY SITE REPORTING THIS SAYING IT'S "FREE"!?!!!?
-
I can't wait to check out the restoration, which I will be doing on Blu-ray not some fag netflix shitty HD fag stream.
-
then I grew the fuck up and realized there's no plot, no likable characters, and no real direction. "Hey Vince, she thinks you're cute" "You gonna hit that, bro?" Season in and out. Fuck it.
-
they're leaving out the STD's, cocaine addiction, and Vincent filing for bankruptcy.
-
I always wanted to try that.
-
I wish they wouldn't call it "HD" when it's super low bandwidth. What you end up with are great still screens...but add any motion, and the quality goes far below DVD quality. This one might not be *too* bad since it shouldn't be widescreen, thus less of the picture to update each frame. But it still wouldn't really be worth it if it weren't free, and you won't get a whole lot out of the "remaster" effect.

Damiz707 - What is it, 8 seasons now of douchebaggery?
by zombieheathledger
I maybe would've been interested in a one-off Swingers type movie about these guys (with different actors) but 8 seasons of watching mediocre fratboy actors get their dicks sucked? No thanks, I'll pass. Conan O'Brian did a joke on them which went "In the year 3000..."
"In the year 3000, Entourage will finally air an episode where things only turn out MOSTLY awesome for Vince and the boys..."
I agree with Cheyne, where the Entourage episode that Vince flips his douchemobile on Sunset and ends up busted with a DWI and possession of coke with his mugshot on TMZ? -
That's what kids said back in the day when they wrote on chalkboards.

I'm sure that ISPs will LOVE the amount of traffic . . .

I used to like it. Yeah, the guys are always trying to bang hot chicks. Fine. But it used to be that it felt like they were at least growing up slowly but surely. And I liked the plots about the difficulty of getting films made and such. But then awhile back I remember reading a quote from someone on the show saying, yeah, people are tired of the making movies stuff so we're going back to what the fans want... the guys partying and banging chicks. Ever since then it has just become repetitive crap.
And if there is one plot more annoying than the douchebag partyboys crap it's the never ending, always annoying Sloane plot. Dear God, Sloane leaving/staying in Eric's life shit makes me wish I was blind and deaf. I have still been watching hoping they pull the show back together but that hasn't happened and I'm bailing. -
Thanks for the heads up on the Wizard Of Oz showing! Free + Judy Garland = Happy DGDB. And how the heck can anyone NOT enjoy Entourage? It's consistently funny, and it allows us all to live out the Hollywood fantasy.
-
Jerry Ferrara (Turtle) stated that if the network tried to pull the show he'd try and contact the president to keep it on air. Pathetic, huh? Enjoy Jamie's pussy while you can. Fat boy.
-
Oh yeah! You're a one second LOSER. Idiot.
-
The Scarecrow was the original gangsta!!
-
I don't want to buy your big cumbersome expensive gift box!!
-
Netflix + Wired Connection to Router = HD GLORY!!!
-
In the Kansas portion of the film, that is. At least in the versions I've seen. I wonder if it was that way on the original print? Anyway, Oz is America's answer to Wonderland, Neverland, Hundred Acre Wood and Middle-Earth, and the fact that so many hacks have taken that wondrous land and warped it with sex and politics sucks giant North American Beaver Balls. If a new Oz film is made it'd be so great if the producers respected the books AND the MGM film and made their movie with the same spirit and artistry. Therein lay greatness.
-
do that damn Dark Side of the Moon thing with it, then go all out. Use the Super Audio 5.1 surround sound version. Better yet, don't do that. The album hasn't a goddamn thing to do with that movie. Damn Stoners.
-
If only they were as fun in real life as they are in the movies.
I knew this douche stoner who would beg and plead to play hacky-sack with us during college breaks...fucking tool would kick the Gawddamn sack on the roof every time, then give us this "what's the, uh, big deal?" shit when we had to hunt down a ladder.
Too bad you can't OD on pot. -
unless the college was one of those fisher price houses. I call bullshit.
-
8 seasons and multiple Emmy nominations for best comedy. But, I can understand why people on this site hate it. I'm sure they have difficulty relating to a group of popular guys getting laid all the time. Time to bust out your Buffy DVD's, losers.
-
Who the fuck watches Conan? The Tonight Show has been a fucking disaster since he took over. Now, that guy is a fucking douche!
