Got A Question For FLASHFORWARD/BATMAN BEGINS/BLADE I/II/III Writer David Goyer?? Post It In Talkback, Fast!!

Published at:  Sep 04, 2009 1:21:18 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

My pal Kathy Lyford is interviewing “FlashForward” mastermind David S. Goyer Friday at 2:30 p.m. PT for TheWrap.com.

If you've questions for Goyer, post in talkback. Ms. Lyford tells me she'll be reading.

Goyer’s directorial credits include:

Zigzag (2002)
Blade Trinity (2004)
The Invisible (2007)
The Unborn (2009)

Goyer’s screenwriting credits include those, plus:

Death Warrant (1990)
Kickboxer 2 (1991)
Demonic Toys (1992)
Arcade (1993)
The Puppet Masters (1994)
The Crow: City of Angels (1996)
Dark City (1998)
Nick Fury: Agent of Shield (1998)
Blade (1998)
Blade II (2002)
Batman Begins (2005)

He shared a story credit (with Christopher Nolan) on “The Dark Knight” and created or co-created (with Brannon Braga) three TV series:

Threshold (2005-2006)
Blade: The Series (2006)
FlashForward (2009)

IMDb also has him writing and maybe directing “X-Men Origins: Magneto.”

Naturally we’ll link to the story after Ms. Lyford writes it up.

Is it something he is at all interested in exploring? Are other creative types he knows buying into it as a creative enhancement, or as a gimmick, or not at all? And does he think 3-D is really worth messing with other than as a form of modern-day anti-piracy measure?

the one good thing he's ever done (besides the first Blade, which is legitimately a fun movie), was get Nolan to make sure Scarecrow had his mask. And look, I'm sure he's a nice guy and everything, but Threshold was SO disappointing, among the other stuff he's done that I haven't liked, but I do admit I might still check out FlashForward.

    Blade 1, 2 & Trinity

    by meafilms

I loved Blade 1 & 2 so much that I think I've seen them more then 40x each or more... I didn't bother buying Blade Trinity to complete my collection or even watch it more than the one time at the theater.

What bothered me the most was the entire scene where Blade was broken out of the police station. I just didn't understand why there seemed to be no threat from the police who just took him down and nothing tactical about the actions of the police I understand they would have been caught off guard but this was enough so that his 'ride' comes up bumping music with the police surrounding the building, then rides right up, everyone gets in and drives away with no pursuit.

My question is why was this scene that could have been completely badass completely bad? Was it the studio holding you back or was it not enough money to bring in an ex police tactical instructor to explain this is how the scene would play out in real life and then get creative with how blade escapes. This one scene took me out of the movie... enough so that I think about it every time I hear the mention of Blade: Trinity.

What was so wrong with making it look as though it could be happening in our reality like Batman Begins or Dark Knight? I think that was their primary strengths as well as Blade 1 & 2.

No disrespect, I just feel a franchise that was off to a great start was flushed.

    Thanks!

    THE CROW: COA

    by the insneider

Goyer, we've met. I interviewed you at the Blade: Trinity junket. You wore a pink shirt and made it look bad-ass. I am a fan of your work, for real. And I liked the first hour or so of The Crow: City of Angels. No joke, I have the blacklight poster over my childhood bed, right next to one for the original Crow. BUT... HONESTLY... WHAT THE F--K HAPPENED TO THE END OF THAT MOVIE? The end of The Crow: City of Angels is one of the worst endings to an otherwise decent movie that I've ever seen in my life. Can you please explain the decision-making process on that one. Was it the producer, the director, the studio? Please, tell me the last act wasn't your idea and it was forced on you. Thank you. Also, The Crow: City of Angels has minor significance to AICN because I remember the first time I saw the trailer, it was in front of Broken Arrow, the movie that gave AICN its name.

    Flash Forward

    by boe

I was intrigued by FF when I first heard about it, however, as I learned more, the premise didn't seem engaging enough to hold and audience's attention for more than a season. The biggest hurdle, from my perspective, is that I don't see how the plot lends itself to a real mythology like Lost, Fringe, etc. Does FF fit the mold of a show like Lost, or is the structure of the narrative entirely different? Do you have a timeline for the full arc of the show (6 seasons? 7?) or was it sold to the network as an entirely open ended project?

A more general Blade Trinity question

    by stryder

What do you think went wrong? I swear I'm not trying to be snarky, I'm honestly curious if you have a take on it. For what they were, I really enjoyed the first two Blades. Trinity seemed like it had a lot of good ingredients but then it just didn't come together. To me, it felt like there were three separate scripts and we only got bits and pieces from each of them. In my experience I learn just as much if not more from my failures as I do from my successes. Have you ever given it any thought?

WHY ISN'T BLADE CENTRAL TO BLADE:TRINITY?

    by spud mcspud

You sidelined arguably the most badass second-tier superhero of the last two decades into a supporting role for your showcase for Bow Girl and Hannibal King. Why? I understand Wesley Snipes is reputed to be party guy, and Ryan is party guy all round, but the series is called BLADE. Why ruin a perfectly good franchise by making the last movie about everybody EXCEPT Blade?

    Oh, and LAMEST. DRACULA. EVER.

Maybe a Blade "reboot" since those reboot deals seem to be all the rage? If not Wesley Snipes, who do you think would make a good Blade? And... by the way, your JSA run was one of the bright spots in the comics universe in the otherwise pretty-sad-times-for-comics late 1990's-early 2000's.

Are Blade-Vampires magic or genetic, or what?

    by _v_

in Blade II, the Vampires were using a lot of genetic research; Blade I also kind of stressed that "most of the old myths are fake" (crosses and holy water are useless) while "some have a kernel of truth" (vampires are fatally allergic to silver and garlic)

Nonetheless there's the whole "Blood God" main plot to Blade I.

By Blade II, it had shifted to be almost entirely "science-based" with the Reavers.

    So which is it?

    by makneil

Why is it that no one was on hand (perhaps a producer or two) during your directing of Blade: Trinity to rein in some of your 'sillier or offensive' directorial choices, such as reaper Pomeranians and the overdone cursing of Hannibal King, which almost made me blush, and I am not above peppering my conversation with f-bombs aplenty.

And finally, why not just admit that Blade: Trinity jumped the shark big time. Interviews that I have seen of you at the time seemed to justify just about every screw-up you made, as opposed to just saying: I made a mistake.

If you had done so I would have not nearly worked so hard to avoid just about everything you were involved with, including your television work.

    My question for Mr. Goyer

    by rassmguy

Mr. Goyer: Will you be involved with the third Batman film, and if you are, how will you avoid falling into the same trap with that series as you did with the Blade series--namely, that the third film is (with all due respect) inferior to the others? This isn't a problem endemic only to Blade--the third film in a series is often the one that marks the point at which fans become disappointed. See Godfather, Alien, Superman, X-men, Spiderman, Return of the Jedi, Hellraiser, Lethal Weapon, Lord of the Rings, and other examples. (NOTE: I tried to word the question so as not to sound like an asshole, like most of the people posting here.)

film, and i will never forgive goyer for wasting Ra as ghul, imho the best batman villain, like that in the reboot.
Mr Goyer wouldnt have been better to bring ras al ghul in a sequel, instead making him a james bond villain in the reboot movie
? Isnt it the comic version of Rasgul way better, than how u treated him in the movie?
Just take the core characteristics of Rasgul. He is brilliant, excellent fighter,he has an empire and he has a beautiful daugter who wants to marry her with batman/wayne.ignore his immortality and insanity aspect of his character.now that stuff wouldnt have been a great material for a more adult movie, exploring more the erotic aspect of batmans personality? u know something similar they did with burtons batman returns with catwoman.but this time batman falls in love with the daughter of his worst enemy and so on.They explore that theme very well in the comics.
But instead of that we got Rasgul as a Blofeld ninja.only the cat was missing.

If given the task, what would be your plan of attack of balancing story, marquee characters with lesser known characters, and actors in that type of movie? How much pressure do think the studios will put upon the film makers to showcase the higher box office hero, despite the cannon of the comic?
Thank you sir, and good luck with FlashForward.

There is no question about whether or not Two-Face is dead. It is quite clear in the script: "He lay on the ground, neck broken, DEAD."

It was pretty obvious in the movie as well.

Please stay away from Batman 3. I'd like to see a purely Nolan film that is brilliant the way Memento and The Prestige were brilliant. Dark Knight was almost there, but I could still feel your presence on it. If the fans truly want a superhero movie that is taken as seriously as any other dramatic film, it needs to be done by Nolan without having to be saddled with a comics dork (no offense) to 'keep it faithful'. It's like Kubrick signing on to do a Wolverine movie and being teamed up with Larry Hama to write the script.

While a lot of people have mixed feelings on Blade 3, one thing that almost everyone can agree worked was Ryan Reynolds. The comic relief was definitely needed, and almost every line he had was laugh out loud funny. How much of Hannibal King's dialogue was scripted and how much was ad-libbed? Have you considered working with Ryan again? The Deadpool movie seems like it would be a great project for the two of you.

    by darkman

    1) Re: THE INVISIBLE - How could you and your writers justify such a moronic and intelligence-insulting decision of having the unlikable twat and the guy she *beat half to death* ending up romantically involved? I can only presume that this was forced upon you by a short bus-riding executive. It completely ruined what, up to that point, was a fairly gripping drama. (BTW, if it was in the original Swedish version, you still could've changed it.)

    2) What advice would you give to someone hoping to break into writing and directing features?

    Blade Trinity

    by shatner_is_god

Blade 1 is my all time favourite comic book movie to date. It was way ahead of its time. Beautiful action scenes, well shot, being able to see everything happen. Blade 2 took the same approach. I was SO EXCITED to see Blade 3. What the hell happened? Why did you choose to seemingly depart from what clearly made Blade 1 and 2 success, that being focusing on Snipes' Blade and the well shot actions scenes. I am just a frustrated fan, who like many many others, feel that the Blade franchise is now gone becuase of Blade Trinity.

Please help me understand what happened!!!

Just when Ah think, that y'all can't be any worse, ya make it worse. This talk balk is posted for legitimate questions for Mr. David Goyer, who by the way, is a working screenwriter. This is not the place to post y'alls silly a$$ slams or childlike comments about his work. Jeez, grow up already. It's people like y'all that make Hollywood churn out tons of crap, because of the simpleton mindedness of y'all. Not saying that all of Mr. Goyer's work is Gold, but enough of it is for him to keep getting work.

Now as a question though for Mr. Goyer, I would like to know and sorry it is technically a couple of questions .............. ...................................What does he recommend for first time screenwriters trying to break into H-wood? Does he recommend the "intern for a year or so" or the "jump right in with both feet, sink or swim" approach to it all?

    Help an aspiring screenwriter out

    by buck.starblaster

Let me start off by saying that I am a big fan of Mr. Goyers venerated work. Batman Begins and Dark city are classics. Now on to my question. I am currently a New York City cop who is trying to break into the screenwriting business. I have written a spec script called "The Guardians." The script made the semi finals in both the Bluecat screenwriting competition, and the 2009 Page International Screenwriting Awards (out of approximately 4,400 entries).

Set in a genre that is red hot right now, The Guardians is a superhero movie with a unique twist. When a superhero learns that his alliance of fellow superheroes has a sinister plan to take over the world, he must turn to the most unlikely source to help him save humanity--the city's supervillains.

Reluctantly led by computer genius Gabe Logan, the team of villains include: Arsenal, a pimp who is always armed to the teeth; the Don, a Mafioso boss, and the Surgeon, a creepy German doctor whose one thrill in life is killing people via unnecessary surgery.

Blurring the line between hero and villain, the action-packed script is loaded with a kind of tongue-in-cheek humor lacking in today's crop of superhero movies.

I've sent many query letters out to both agents and production companies. I always receive the same response; we do not accept unsolicited queries. How the hell do I get someone to look at my work? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    WB GOOD MORNING SNUB

    by beneath_the_cowl

    Mr. Goyer,

I am a huge fan of your WORK on Begins, TDK, etc. I know a writer of your caliber is beseiged with requests. Unfortunately I worked on the Warner lot in the Executive Building a few years back and walked past you one morning as you were entering -- it was only you and me on the sidewalk. Recognizing you, I said a polite "good morning" to you (it's my habit of speaking, regardless of who you "are"), and you looked at me like Who the F-- are you to be speaking to me? and said nothing.
Knowing the ins and outs of this biz, I brushed it off and quickly made a mental separation of the Goyer the man from his work. While you're enjoying all those millions and the God-given opportunity to indulge your creative gifts, just remember all it takes is a few crappy reviews and some lousy Nielsen ratings for you to be David Who? If you're going to be in a high profile career, one that deals with exploring the inner workings of the human soul and its effects upon society, have the decency to remember the effects of such words as "good morning." I mean really.

    Question for David Goyer

    by cobbio

I've enjoyed several projects you've either scripted or co-scripted over the years, so I'm hopeful that maybe "Flashforward" will surprise and engage people. I really hope it does.
On a personal note, I read Robert J. Sawyer's book about ten years ago and was blown away by the last ten or so pages of it. I mean, it just went out there, eclipsing all my expectations and kind of leaving me breathless.
My question is this: will the spirit of the book's final revelations be explored? Will a conscious attempt to "go out there" arrive for us viewers? I'm not expecting the same thing to happen, nor would I necessarily want it to in the context of your show, but will that kind of pulse-pounding, "out there," far-futuristic possibility be explored?

Hi David Goyer, you've certainly been part of some good comic films-so I am curious-Is there a dream project you have? Or was Batman it (in terms of being part of a commerically and critically sucessful comic-based film?)If not, WHAT IS your dream project?

    by pop_aristocrat

I mean, yeah, Blade 3, no good. But everything else is at least decent, and Dark City is in my top 5 favorites, no doubt.

I would ask if its easier or harder to write for established franchises like Batman, or to write original works like Dark City. On the one hand, you've got lots of source material to go with on established characters, but you have to deal with studios and the vitrolic talkback boards, like this one.
Once you've begun with a franchise, do you find it difficult to leave, or regret putting your time into three films with the same character and direction?

    by tall_boy66

It's a sole shot of Gordon making the speech with the slow-push in on the Harvey Dent portrait. So that coulda been alive-and-stashed in Arkham. Yeah, I know that's reaching a bit, but c'mon, show me the man in a casket so the point is more clearly made cause he didn't look very dead-from-fall, just passed out. Shoulda had him land with limbs all askew and head-tilted wrongly. Or maybe the classic guy-falls-from-great-height-and-gets-impaled-on-something-pointy. Or at least Gordon checking his pulse and saying, "He's dead." SOMETHING! Argh! I need closure! (Also, I had a feeling they were building up Two-Face to be the full-on main bad guy for the next film watching it.) Even Aaron Eckhart asked Nolan if he was dead.

    The Dark Knight Returns

    by freebeer

And it WILL be called The Dark Knight Returns, even if its not based on the novel of the same name. Batman left Gotham at the end of the last movie, and in the next he will return so its an appropriate tital. What villains could you imagine topping Nolans/Heath Ledgers Joker? Catwoman would only work as a minor distraction, not the main threat of the story. However, I think it is likely we will see her appear, perhaps in a Two Face capacity, her character present throughout the movie but only becoming Catwoman in the final act. I am disappointed they killed off Two Face. The movie should have ending with The Joker blowing up the hospital and Wayne being informed that Harvey Dents body was not found. Two Face goes on a mad killing spree and is killed falling off a rooftop? Hardly the stuff legends are made of. Two Face deserved more. He could easily have went on to become the main villain in the next movie. Dent has had an entire movie previous detailing his origion story and history with Wayne, and because of this he could make an even more compelling baddie than The Joker. (And for some reason I would also like to see The Scarecrow return in some capacity. It would be fun if in every Nolan Batman Cillian Murphy were to pop up as The Scarecrow in a scene or two.)

    Batman 3 Villain: Hugo Strange

    by dailysportspages

He has been secretly working on figuring out who Batman really is from day one. He has compiled more info on Batman and knows more about him than anyone else.

Strange enjoys a senior position at Arkham Assylum as an expert in criminal psychosis.
He is tasked by the city of Gotham to help them find the true identity of both Batman and the recently escaped Riddler, who is know publicly goading Batman into revealing his secret.

The truth is that Strange allowed Riddler to escape in order to have him help draw out Batman, to have Riddler get Bat to reveal the truth of who he really is. Strange is not interested in helping the city, its just all part of his plan to gain access to city resources he needs.

Strange releases more inmates who he has conditioned to do his bidding. Forcing Batman to work harder in order to bring order to Gotham... even while he is a wanted man.

One such inmate is Bane, the intelligent beast of a man who proceeds to have a drag out fight with Batman that culminates in the breaking of Batmans back.
The movie ends with close in shot of what appears to be Batman going through a shadowy montage with clips of him training and putting on the batman suit. As the camera widens a bit Batman begins to monologue about his lot in life. His voice sounding a bit different though. He talks about how he is a product of this city, how he overcame childhood trauma, how his experiences have honed his body and his directed his mind, how he has been planning for this moment for years, and how he has orchestrated events in Gotham for the past few years all to reach this point, to finally be who he is supposed to be.
And as we get closer and his face comes into focus, we see that its not Bruce Wayne... but Hugo Strange who is now the Batman.

Hugo Strange: Michael Keaton (Bruce Willis if you want stars)
    Riddler: Crispin Glover (Jeff Goldblum)
    Bane: Randy Couture
Harley Quinn: Katee Sackhoff (Christina Ricci)
Dick Grayson: Benjamin McKenzie (Shia LeBeef... who did you expect lol)

Blade I & II: awesome. Bat Man Begins & Dark Knight: Awesome. Dark City: SupAwesome. I think you have a real eye story telling and appreciate your contributions to film. That being said, however, I have to add my extreme dislike for Blade Trinity. Awful movie. Tripple H: wasted. Dracula: useless character. The "cabal" or whatever?: what was their purpose? Hannibal King: completely wrong. Whistler: "It breaks my heart to see you blah blah blah" Seriously? At that point I was expecting Blade to say "But Whistler, how will I know if I'm in love?" and Whistler replying "You just will, Blade. You just will." Terrible. But my biggest gripe with that movie (and I may be alone in this) no one threw Blade his sunglasses so he could go kick the bad guys' asses. Seriously screwed pooch there. However, The Dark Knight is equally as awesome as that movie is terible. So overall, I'll say thank you the awesome movies you've written (except Blade Trinity, of course, which is abysmal).

As I said, you don't see him die definitely, you see him lying there, and you see Gordon making a speech. There is not a single line of dialouge that says, "Harvey Dent is dead, Two Face is dead" There is no coffin. Like I said, it's ambiguous. They coulda had Two Face impaled on something or Gordon or Bats check for lifesigns to really get the point across. So, as it's presented in the film and not in the script, you don't know what happened to him.

Think its pretty clear what we see at the end of the movie is a funeral service. They don't have to say straight out "He's Dead Jim!" for us to realise he's a goner. However, if you mean that Wayne and Gordon faked his death (which is a theory entertained by some) then its possibly but highly unlikely. Nolan has said straight out that Dent is dead in interviews, and if he wanted Two Face in the next movie he would have just ended the movie at the hospital. I'm not saying he won't be in the next film who knows but I doubt it. I think Nolan decided to kill him off because a the time he genuinely didn't believe he would make a third Batman.

If Two Face isn't dead, why is Batman on the run?

Why not a Batman redux TV show?

    by chris bendt

Ever since the Birds of Prey shots of the caped crusader in the intro i've been wondering why there hasn't been a 1/2 hour show done for at least Y7 and above like in the old days without the camp?

    by iamnicksaicnsn

name to be sullied, so they buried the fact that Dent became Two-Face, by literally burying him. Batman then took the blame. Not necessarily where I would have gone with it, but still, brilliant movie. It still technically leaves it open for Two-Face to be alive somehow.

    Regarding Flash Forward

    by jaka

Was he approached to create the series or did he pitch it? Did he pitch it to more than one place - i.e. multiple networks and/or studios? Was there ever a thought that it would be a movie, rather than a series? How much of the series is a reaction to the success of Lost as a series as well as it's use of flashbacks and flash forwards?

    by liljuniorbrown

Ever since I heard the premise for SuperMax I have been dying to see it. And strangely enough I have always envisioned a Reign of Fire/Time to Kill mix of Matthew M as Oliver Queen. That would be balls out if they added some good second tier villans from the DC verse. I also thought it would be a way to introduce Hal Jordan pre Lantern as a good friend of Olivers before the shit goes down. Why the fuck can't DC get there shit together like Marvel and make it happen? Thats the million dollar question.

    Blade Question...

    by hipshot

So...who exactly was the idiot who decided Blade should be the most sexless vampire on film? When the other vampires are clearly sexual? It CAN'T be that Snipes is black, of course. And you can't have promised him a love interest in the 3rd film, and then reneged when he signed the contract, which led to his visible disinterest in the film, and legendary stress on the set. That can't be true, can it? Didn't think so.

    FlashForward Casting

Legit question re: Blade 3 & Blade: The Series

    by one_of_the_bent_podcast_hosts

    Hey Mr. Goyer,

You managed to make a franchise so good that it spoiled me to other vampire movies. Blade is how vampires and hunters should be--always. No exceptions. I like others am curious about the Trinity hiccup.

Blade 2 was, in my opinion, one of the most fun action movies ever made, had the most compelling main characters in the Blade, Whistler, Scud trifecta, and until recently with TDK was probably the best comic book movie to date. Trinity was less intense, less gritty, less brutal, and seemed, altogether, less relevant.

But then you did Blade: The Series, the show that, once a week, made sure that I was exhausted at my early-morning landscaping job. It was suddenly Blade as I remembered him--vital, dark, gritty, character-oriented, and topical. The ash storyline predated and one-upped True Blood's "V" bullshit and is a far better drug story; Blade's old gang is a harsh lesson about street culture and the fetishization of violence in urban culture, etc.

What would you have done with Blade: The Series had Spike continued to fund it? Would it have delved deeper into the issues it presented early on and mature as a kind of dark-fantasy mirror to lauded sci-fi BSG, or would you have moved it closer to the camp and fluff of Trinity?

Personally, I think that the originality and growth you've showed with TDK and Unborn (criticize all you want, people, Kabbalah is a great starting point for a horror film) imply that the show would only have matured. Even in the short run, Kirk Jones was beginning to hit some kind of stride and I genuinely bought him as Blade.

Hope this isn't too late to make it in. Love your work, keep it up--and always remember that comic book movies succeed when they're kept relatively plausible.
