Meet The New Cast Members Of SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE!!
I am – Hercules!!
SNL has recruited two new cast members for its Sept. 26 35th season premiere.

Jenny Slate, who appears in the “7th Floor West” sketches on the Lorne Michaels-produced “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,” has performed at the UCB Theatre, which gave us Horatio Sanz and Amy Poehler.

Nasim Pedrad, who played Nurse Suri on nine episodes of “ER,” is a vet of USB and the Groundlings, the outfit that gave us Laraine Newman, Jon Lovitz, Phil Hartman, Jan Hooks, Mike Myers, Julia Sweeney, Will Ferrell, Cheri Oteri, Ana Gasteyer, Chris Parnell, Maya Rudolph, Jimmy Fallon, Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Michaela Watkins and Abby Elliott.
Read all of Variety’s story on the matter here.

Like seriously?? More white women? No black women or men??
-
damn.
-
Sweet
-
but are they funny?
-
"The boner factor."
-
Micheala Watkins, who plays Hoda Kotb, can upstage Kristen Wiig, no problem. But Chris Elliot's daughter and Casey Wilson look uncomfortable on stage and get few laughs. Eye candy, nothing else.
-
When is this old fart going to call it quits?
-
I'm guessing a lot.
-
I was too busy watching Smallville to notice.
-
of, the Smells like pepper in here guy (saw him in a lame ass trailer today), Chris Elliots useless daughter, and the bitch please girl. And Kristen Wiig just because.
-
Like seriously?? More white women? No white fat men??
;) -
Poor guy.
-
quality and funny, for hotness and profits, but such is the world. Kristen Schaal is 100 times the performer these ho-bags are but will probably earn much less notariety.
-
Bobby Moynihan (the guy you're bashing) is not just talented, he's fucking hysterical. I caught him performing in AsssCat3000 at UCB in New York a few weeks ago, and it was unquestionably one of the funniest experiences of my life. And that was fucking IMPROV.
-
I'm wagering Casey Wilson and Bobby Moynihan...
-
I know, you can name some funny woman...or maybe something funny a woman said once...sure, fine. I can probably come up with an albino magician if given enough time.
-
If only for his role in La Revista Di La Television Con Vinny Vedecci.
-
Dump Jason (no known characters, utterly bland), Casey & Michaela (why were they hired?), Kenan (where did black people get this name, btw? There are now a couple generations of famous Kenans and I have no idea where that name came from - not being racist, I'm just asking. Also, he isn't funny and you don't get to stay just because you're the only black guy.), Darrell (The guy is ancient old and this is all he is known for. SNL is like college, after 7 years, you have to go.), and finally Will and/or Fred (I really don't care which one, they are interchangeable in my mind). I'd throw Andy in there, but that Iran So Far Away short still makes me smile and it had a catchy tune. The rest can stay - Abby is third generation funny, Bill and Kristen are the only real stars, Bobby is weirdly amusing with that gay sticky thing they let him do a couple of times and fat white guys are funny (they have to be, everyone would hate them otherwise), and Seth, though a douche, carries the news.
-
whats up?
-
okay, i'll be the asshole to bring this up again, but it's so true. i really enjoyed snl this past season and am looking forward to watching megan fox attempt to be funny on the season premiere, but this is ridiculous. and i'm a white dude who rarely notices this sort of thing! fred armisen is funny but his obama is horrendous and any time they need a michelle obama, lorne michaels has to pick up the phone and call the hilarious maya rudolph. and to preempt any future arguments, nasim pedrad sure as hell doesn't look middle eastern to me. i find it hard to believe that the show that gave us eddie murphy, chris rock, tracy morgan, keenan thompson and ellen cleghorn (just kidding about that last one) can't find any funny black people.
-
But to salvage my manly essence of being a dick I honestly wont care if they come or not
-
and left the scene with some dignity. He'll never assemble that great, funny cast that he once had.
-
conjure up my stolen "Best of Phil Harmtna" video tapes, or given you clairvoyance enough to find the Belushi's hidden fortre-- (chokes)
-
You've gotta be kidding me. What the fuck kind of disease is this that now it's spread to comedy? This bodes horrendously for comedy as a genre. I would occasionally like to laugh while watching my sketch comedy show. These chicks ,meaning the new crop (Wiig and Poehler are pretty funny and Fey became hot AFTER she gained momentum) are pathetically reliant on playing adorable and its boring as fuck. Look at those two videos.
-
...so's the "What, bitch" chick whose name I can't - and SHAN'T - remember. Please tell me they've been tossed aside like Rosie O'Donnell's empty "plenty pack" bag of Little Debbie bunt cakes.
-
Apart from Joan Rivers I cannot think of one funny lady.
-
Just curious to know if any of last year's cast dropped or was fired after the year.
Also, the Bobby Moynihan hate on this board is ridiculous. The guy is hilarious. -
is when she opened the Ark of the Covenant and her face melted off.
-
...I'll watch to see that Nasim Pedrad. Persian girls are smokin' HOT!
-
...of course.
-
Always good for a laugh.
-
Since their last two additions were Abby Elliot and Mikaela Watkins. (The former of which is hotter than both of the two new girls.) But it's not hard to understand. Who are the cast members who've made the biggest imprint the past couple years? Kristen Wiig, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey. Not saying the guys are bad - Hader in particular is great - but it's been the girls (plus a few digital shorts) making the most buzz. So stop the peanut gallery bitching that girls aren't funny. You would've said the same thing about the older crop. It's bordering on self-parody.
-
if those black people are funny. And also, other people who are funny.
-
It's gonna be a long season. Look forward to lots of women signing "funny songs."
-
They only have to be moderately funny and everyone will treat you like a comic genius. I'm looking your way, Ms.Wiig . . .
-
After watching those two videos I see SNL will continue the tradition it has upheld since Chris Farley and Phil Hartman left.....See? That's a positive way of saying the show has sucked.
-
The most consitantly funny person on the cast for the past 2 seasons has been kristen wiig. She's so polished it's amazing. Bobby Moynihan is funny and he should get more airtime. Darrell Hammond is the current "glue" whether you like it or not. No one that's on there can come anywhere close to doing the range of impressions he can do, especially the political ones. Andy samberg isn't going anywhere considering how popular the digital shorts have been. I'm tired of Keanan. If they feel obligated to have a black guy on the show they should just find a new one, preferably one that can do a better Obama impersonation than Fred [who I'm also tiring of]. Seth is fine on Weekend update. I'm not sure how I feel about about how many women they've been adding. I just can't think of that many funny women. On the other hand, at least it's different. I don't recall this many women being on the cast at one before. I imagaine the reality is is that Lorne just tries to find people that don't suck regardless of gender or race is or how atractive or fat they are, which really as it should be.
-
Not because I watch it. I tried watching once or twice but it was just so painfully bland. But God Damn these talkbacks sure are fucking funny! Thanks everyone!
-
Who gives a Fat Fuck? This show is lamer than lame, yet they still act as though they are some kind of renegade comedy troupe, SO CUTTING EDGE. But it's not. at. all. It sucks.
-
Horatio Sanz is too busy making crap and John Blushi is too dead. Boondock 2 trailer.
http://tinyurl.com/kuoxf2 -
hope for a lesbian mudwrestling skit. it won't be funny, but it will be HOTT.
-
how long before the jooish chick and the iranian chick get into a fight?
-
He is easily the funniest person on the show. His Vincent Price is great and so is the Frankenstein. It sucks balls that he is so underused.
-
http://tinyurl.com/545sk7
-
Glida Radner was about it.....I kinda agree.
Women do funny things and can be in funny situations....but a performing female comic that is funny....bone shaking funny,,is rare indeed. -
We have a black President, and no one on SNL to portray him. I was willing to look at Armisen, but he just hasn't found the man. MadTV had a perfectly decent Obama, lampooned him beautifully. But for Kenan Thompson to be the only representative...that is shameful, and I begin to think, quite deliberate.
-
Coke, speed, meth, acid and pot. Once they went drug free back stage they stopped being funny.
Also Lorne Micheals is a fucking Canadian.
-
the hottest two women ever on the show. As to the "are women funny?" debate that comes up now and then, it doesn't really matter as long as they have comic timing and charisma because comedians need straight men to bounce off of. Not everyone has to be the punch line zinger person, someone has to be the normal one, the foil.
-
Yep, agreed - I can name a handful or so but none of them really compare to the greats. I don't think I've ever heard of a comedy album by a woman or a best of SNL that features a female cast member. SNL has spent a bunch of effort cultivating female talent over the last decade because Tina Fey was the lead writer (a woman how writes funny and knows funny but isn't a funny performer, imo). For that we got Amy Poehler, who is funnier than most of the guys on the show currently, but that isn't saying much.

SNL has more White People than Palpatine's Death Star
by disney_retcond_my_std
so what does that make Lorne Michaels...
-
When Tara Reid's the funniest part of the video, time to possibly rethink the career. But otherwise, par for the course for SNL.
-
so she's perfect for SNL. Women are meant to be sexy not funny. I think Tina Fey is one of the few women that made me laugh. That guy in the beginning of the 2nd vid was funny though.

SNL has more humorless people than Palpatine's Death Star
by gunslinger1919
just sayin'
-
...who's funny, of course. I don't seem to remember there ever having been an Asian on SNL.
-
With all these new chix, they can make this sketch FINALLY happen in a realistic, believable manner. Let the lesbian spankings begin!!!! Wiig and Elliott, you first....wait, Elliott, I keep thinking of your dad when I look at you ... gargantuan erection waning ... send in the hot new Ay-rab, toot-sweet!
-
Belushi always said that women except for Gilda Radner couldn't do sketch comedy and weren't funny. On SNL there has only been a handful of exceptions like Jan Hooks, Cheri Orteri, and a few others. And I don't think Kristen Wiig is in that category. Sorry, but I just don't think acting weird and making a strange voice in every sketch is funny.
-
MadTV has left many great performers in its wake, and Bobby Lee was one of the best. Made me laugh like a burning witch repeatedly.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tv1qIrqINA
(Go to 1:55 for a laugh like no other) -
I can't speak for the modern era of SNL, but Gilda Radner was funny. When she wasn't playing Pat, Julia Sweeney was funny. Carol Burnett was funny. Imogene Coca was funny. Mary Tyler Moore, Roseanne, Christine Baranski, Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley, all funny, if in very different ways.
As others have touched on above, the reason we don't see more comediennes is because the dumpy white guys coughMichaelscough who still run things hire other dumpy white guys, or pretty faces without much talent behind them, leaving us rubes in the peanut gallery "free" to snicker and point: "See! Women aren't funny!"
Grow the hell up.
(And, because you -know- someone's gonna bring it up, yes, I am a dumpy white male.)
-
MadTV did a better job casting talent than SNL - shame it never received much recognition.
-
The group of Daily Show correspondents used to be embarrassingly white too (although it's hard to knock the talent they rounded up: Steve Carrell, Stephen Colbert, Ed Helms, etc.), but the current crop is a really good mix. They've got TWO black cast members: Larry Wilmore (often called Senior Black Correspondent) and Wyatt Cenac, both of whom have different styles of humor, but are each extremely funny. In fact, I think Wyatt Cenac is one of the best comedy finds in years; SNL would be lucky to get him. They've also got Aasif Mandvi (who's Indian, I believe, although the show makes a great joke out of suggesting that nobody can tell what he is besides the fact that he's clearly some kind of Middle Eastern or somethin'). It's a pretty diverse group without having that "X was only picked because he's this race" feel: they're all legitimately funny, and having more diversity has legitimately allowed them to go places with their comedy that they wouldn't otherwise. SNL could take some lessons.
As for funny women, again, I think the Daily Show's Samantha Bee is pretty damn funny, as is occasional contributor Kristen Schall (also on Flight of the Conchords).
I agree that pop culture has probably produced a higher proportion of funny men as compared to women, but it's ridiculous to say women just aren't ever funny. Have you seen Roseanne's classic standup routines? Or her show (which also featured a very funny Laurie Metcalf)? Or Lucille Ball in any of her shows? Or Jessica Walter as Lucille on Arrested Development. What about Sarah Silverman, Ellen Degeneres, Margaret Cho, or SNL's own Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Jane Curtin, Tina Fay, Cheri Oteri, Molly Shannon, Kristin Wig, Janeane Garafalo, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus?
Over time I've come to find Elaine one of the funniest parts of Seinfeld; a lot of her stuff is more subtle than the more obvious Kramer or George humor, and I think that's probably true of female comedians in general. Will Ferrell or Adam Sandler are in-your-face funny, so you notice them and think of them right away. But a good straight man (or woman) is just as important a part of a lot of comedy routines as the more outrageous member, and it requires just as much talent. Some of the funniest moments of the American The Office have involved Pam as the straight man ("Please don't throw garbage at me.").
I imagine if you really think that women are NEVER (or even rarely) funny, that might suggest that your definition of humor is rather narrow, and focuses more on broad physical comedy (but then again there's Lucille Ball) or outrageous, off-the-wall statements (but then again there's Sarah Silverman) than on more the character-based stuff that a lot of women do. -
"Unable to find humor in sketches! My laughing is impaired...EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!"
Problem solved.
-
Darrell Hammond left the show at the end of last season.
-
One nice thing about anonymity on the internet is that you can speak freely on uncomfortable topics. I appreciate your attempt, but you can't really debate what is apparent. Women aren't funny...sorry. Like I said, we can all name a handful (and that handful should never include Cheri O'Teri or Maya Rudolph or Lucille Ball...ever) and that is about it. The only person on your list who really fits the criteria is Degeneris (and she is a lesbian...sorry, full disclosure). Sarah Silverman, maybe. If we were talking about minorities, we could could attribute this to the fact that there are fewer of them. In the case of women it is hard to come up with a systemic explanation because they comprise around half the population. The fact that, on this board, people are bringing up names like joan rivers and gilda radner pretty much makes my argument for me. If someone was to say, "black guys aren't funny" not only could I name a couple dozen black guys who are not only funny but actual comedic geniuses, I could name a half dozen great comedy albums by black guys spanning several decades right off the top of my head and, again, there are far fewer black guys than women. I can't name a single comedy album by a woman - I suspect this is true for most people.
-
SNL needs more female comics. These two look good.
http://nickleshi.blogspot.com -
Sorry, I didn't realize lesbians weren't women. And as I said above, you're right, there probably is a higher percentage of funny men compared with women. But I don't think that means that women aren't funny, for all of the reasons I listed above.
The thing is, though, this is an impossible topic to debate. I can't convince you that something isn't funny if you think it is, or that something is funny if you think it isn't. That's not how comedy works. To me, there's absolutely nothing funny about Larry the Cable Guy or Dane Cook; millions of people disagree with me, and I can't imagine how a logical argument could change either of our minds.
(Still: have you ever really watched I Love Lucy? I think it holds up pretty damn well). -
and that's one tough thing to pull off.
-
Girls are not funny. And seriously they are not hot youd just fuck em cuz they look better then the others but if you put them in a line of hotter chicks, youd see their pulsating ugliness shine. Also I second the notion of adding fat people cuz fat people are always funny and not just because their fat, they generally have more heart and love to go around on a purely energetic level of speaking.
Last but not least, fuck SNL, this is some lame ass comedy. ALL THAT on nickelodean was funnier then the past 10 years of SNL. MADTV is funnier then SNL. -
but not if they are women...then they are just sad and scary.
oh, and remember that time on the lucy show when she was at the conveyor belt and...ha, ha...it kept going...hee, hee, ha, ha...and then she was...gasp, ha...trying to keep up and...ha...ricky came in and...eh, uh...sigh...I'm sorry, what were we talking about? -
Women aren't funny? Are you trying to provoke people? Kee-rist, your mama must've done a number on you, little man.
-
Born in Iran. Which is in Asia.
-
Has pretty much replaced SNL since its debut in 1995. to bad it got cancelled.
-
Much funnier than quadroons! MUCH funnier.
-
...Well technically Nasim Pedrad, an Iranian-American is an Asian-American, Iran being located in the continent of Asia. But, I understand what you mean, anyway.
-
It is a common opinion - one of those things we think but don't say. It is hard to come up with more than a handful of genuinely funny female comics, and, as I said, I doubt anyone here can name a great (or good, or any) comedy album by a woman. Sorry if that offends you. It isn't a matter of opinion, it is a matter of numbers. I'm not offering an opinion as to why this is the case (socialization, biological predisposition, differing priorities, etc.) btw.
It is interesting to note that many women comics readily concede there is a funny gap and they don't automatically attribute it to sexism. A couple years back here in NYC Amy Poeler, Rachel Dratch and a couple other female comics had a round table discussion (I think it may have been at the Tribeca Film Festival, but I'm not sure) the subject of which was "Why women aren't as funny as men" (paraphrasing, but that was pretty much it). -
I just don't think they are usually funny on SNL. There has been exceptions, but there have been few women on SNL who can consistently get funny stuff on the air. Most are relegated to being roll players and straight women.
In the history of SNL, you might be able to find a half dozen at most women who could rise above mostly being roll players. I would put Gilda Radner, Jan Hooks, Cheri Oteri, Kristen Wiig, and maybe Maya Rudolph in that category. Otherwise, this has been a male dominated show even with several women in the cast. Women who have gone onto bigger and better things like Julia Louis Dryfus and Sarah Silverman were minor roll players on SNL because they could never get anything on the air.
So Belushi was right at least when it comes to SNL. Outside SNL there are plenty of funny women, but comedy in general is usually dominated by men. -
But I don't think either Polher, Wiig, or Rudolph were particularly good. They were just good enough to convince Lorne Michaels to put their stuff on the air.
-
You go sisters. Let's put more girls in SNL so I can relate to the humor more. Ever since Tina left I've been on a 2 year long period. Follow My Tweets On Twitter cause I'm gay.
-
These chicks are cute, but Wiig is both cute and damn funny. I'll save my love juice for that chick.
-
But she was mostly "the straight man", like when she did SNL news. but that was the perfect lead-in for Dan Aykroyd to say "Jane, you ignorant slut".But was she herself a hysterical comedienne? No. There haven't been any women on SNL or anywhere else for that matter that can contend with the comedy greats. I don't know why that is, but it just is.
-
I like Watkins too. And now these two look like babes. So either they'll deliver, or they'll just look hot and I'll be fine. I'll tune in every Saturday, like I always do, regardless of how good or bad the cast is.
-
Hitchens gets on my nerves but this was kind of interesting (it is also interesting that no magazine has every thought to debate the question of whether men are funny...)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7izJggqCoA -
is the daughter of Chris Elliot and the grand daughter of Bob Elliot (of Bob & Ray). How she ended up so hot is a mystery. She has yet to do anything I've seen on the show, however, with that pedigree, she has real potential.
-
Why people watch this relic blows my mind. This show isn't funny nor has it ever been funny. Yeah, even back durring the Akroid and Chase days it wasn't funny. Back durring the Sandler, Farley days is wasn't funny.
-
There was only 1 line: Takes it in all holes. Makes sense after those clips.
-
Not specifically that women aren't funny. Obviously there are and have been some incredibly funny women throughout the entertainment history. But rather, I was thinking that women don't/can't do 'dumb' funny. Such as Coach or Woody on Cheers or similar bumbling type characters. I think it has something to do with treating women as stupid that doesn't go over. Thoughts?
-
Gracie of George Burns and Gracie Allen did dumb funny (say good night Gracie...), she is the first popular female comic that comes to mind. I've noticed that at some point sit coms decided it was fashionable for the men to be feckless bumblers and women to be clever and knowing. you can see this played out a hundred times a day in commercials - the guy is a lazy, gluttonous man-child and his wife/girlfriend to keep him from doing something stupid. it is a lazy way to pander to half your demographic and it reinforces some lame stereotypes. guys grow up with this notion that it is ok to be a dumbass and women get the idea that their role is the castrating mother figure.
-
that aren't stupid exactly, but you wouldn't call the Terrrget clerk being all there. Going back, like the Gracie Allen reference, didn't Judy Holiday excel at "dumb blonde" roles?
-
Michaela Watkins is completely talentless...as is Casey Wilson. Abby Elliott is the only female on their half-funny, and thats only because every time I see her I think, "how the fuck did Chris Elliott have such a good looking kid?"
-
...and in fact there are lots of actresses who weren't considered comediennes but killed in funny "dumb" roles (like Marilyn Monroe in SOME LIKE IT HOT, just to name one off the top of my head). Woody's character in CHEERS is like a male version of the "dumb blonde". (And if you turn Woody up to 11, you get Jason Stackhouse in TRUE BLOOD.) Feminism made that kind of character "uncool", for obvious PC reasons. Of course, you still get a Lisa Kudrow type from time to time. (The reason it worked for Phoebe to be a dumb blonde is, first, the other smart women in FRIENDS took the sting off, and second, Kudrow's weird delivery made Phoebe seem somehow non-stereotypical. Note that she wasn't really able to translate her peculiar style into any other roles, apart from ROMY & MICHELE, where she basically played Phoebe again.)
-
Just skip the talkback entirely if you think the show was NEVER funny.Oft overlooked for being funny and actually being rather hot was Jan Hooks. Probably overshadowed by Carvey/Hartman/Myers now.
-
At least to get people tuning in for the first episode, if they're funny, we'll keep tuning in...
-
I mean it's kind of funny. Oh and by the way this little debate about are women funny or not is pretty hilarious. Dudes who don't get laid and hide behind the internet come out and go "Womn aren't funny" wow hold bold. Fuck faces just because chicks won't sleep with you doesn't mean you HAVE to be sexist. Most women I know are funny. Also if you keep asking the same question about listing how many funny women you can think up, do the same for men because I'm coming up blank besides Jon Stewart and some others. Most men comedians out there suck about as much or worse than women comedians. Debate over.
-
please - the notion that misogynistic nerds are taking out their rage against women by suggesting that they aren't funny kind of strains credulity, doesn't it? It is interesting because I've expressed this same opinion to girlfriends in the past and my wife and her friends now that I'm married and, whether they agree or not, they don't get angry about it. Many suggest that women have a different appreciation of humor that doesn't translate well to stand-up (I think there is something to that, btw). Try putting it this way - why do you think there are far fewer female physicists or mathematicians or computer scientists than males? Can we infer from the fact that I asked that question that I hate women because I'm not getting any? How about this - don't name a bunch of funny women (though, to be fair, I can name several dozen funny men without thinking about it...actually, I could even limit it to specific categories, like just guys in comedy troupes or just guys on sitcoms or just bald stand-up comedians or just dead comedians...does that jog your memory?) just name me one great or good comedy album by a woman...even just one that anyone else recalls hearing.
-
Paris by Paris Hilton.
-
Lisa Lampanelli: Take It Like a Man. She verbally slays all in her path. Funnier than most men. She honestly crushes this stereotype. That's one. There can be only one.
-
Excellent - see, everyone? Someone actually came up with one. It took awhile, but someone, without resorting to name calling and denial, actually put forth a suggestion. Never hear of this album, but I will check it out - I'd love to be proven wrong.
-
Known as the Queen of Mean she is described as a female Archie Bunker. Not for the faint of heart or easily offended especially if you are racially sensitive. Christ it sounds like I'm her agent. If ya don't know, now ya know.

...And by that I mean would like to play with their vaginas. (Vaginas? Vaginum? Vagini? Vaginices? Damned Latin.)
-
A shame because I liked both. Michaela got to to do a lot more in a shorter time period and is a real surprise. Casey less so, but she just couldn't seem to get air time.
-
Very happy that Casey's gone, and while Michaela had a couple ok impressions, others were downright ghastly. But maybe she never got a fair shake, who knows? She has released a statement of her firing as such, just waiting for Casey's.
-
=Lame.
Both were funny. Lorne has jumped the shark again. Jumped it and humped it.
I look forward to both of those funny women getting some air time and breathing room someplace else. -
I think it's cool that they have a middle-easterner as part of the cast. :) Now all they need is an asian...cripes, "In Living Color" and "MAD TV" had asian cast members...
-
Heard his drug problem rivals Artie Lang's though. Good luck with that
-
I really liked her on the show but she was hysterical on The New Adventures of Old Christine. I hope they bring her back because she is a funny girl.
-
..and his staff is afraid to tell him his ideas suck.

Is this show STILL on?
-
... the sinking ship that is SNL!?!?!?
-
after it is off the air everyone will miss it and claim to be a die hard fan. Andy Samberg=funniest guy on TV.

Whoever photoshopped that needs to be brought over to SNL. She is an attractive woman, but that picture looks nothing like her.
