Stephen Frears Meets TAMARA DREWE!!

Published at:  Sep 02, 2009 10:14:53 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Stephen Frears (THE QUEEN) will direct a live-action adaptation of Posy Simmond's graphic novel TAMARA DREWE - which itself was amassed from a serialized strip in The Guardian.

Brit thesp Gemma Arterton will play Drewe, a sexy flirt who returns to her small country village and stirs up dark passions among the locals.

...says Variety HERE.

Arterton's career has gone into overdrive lately; she recently appeared in QUANTUM OF SOLACE and Richard Curtis' THE BOAT THAT ROCKED, and will be seen in Louis Leterrier's forthcoming CLASH OF THE TITANS remake, Bruckheimer's PRINCE OF PERSIA adaptation, and a new version of WUTHERING HEIGHTS.

Frears also brought us DANGEROUS LIASONS, THE GRIFTERS, DIRTY PRETTY THINGS, and more.

Learn more about TAMARA DREWE, and find it, HERE.

Didn't Lyndsey Lohan already do this?

    by rolling_stone

With Jane Fonda some years back? Then again, it is such a worn premise it's been done dozens of times. Is this movie any different? Like does Tamara talk to the dead or have flame-throwers for tits? Anything like that?

It says on the book-flap... Don't know about that but Posy Simmonds is really good. Frears is good too, but this doesn't scream "must see" to me exactly...

Have a Lame Idea That Would Never Be a Movie

    by kevinwillis.net

Or anything, normally? Draw pictures and put the dialog in word balloons and your lame, been-done-before idea will become a movie! Nothing against Tamara Drewe, per se, but it seems like every crappy graphic novel becomes a movie. Does it save on story boarding or something?

Does she do reverse-cowgirl in it?

... cause that's the only thing that'll get me interested in this.

    I've read it

    by paulsc

It's pretty decent, but whereas the style and subject matter were fairly distinctive for a comic series, as a movie there's a danger it'll just end up as an extremely low-key and not particularly distinguished rural english melodrama. Even if it turns out great, I guarantee that the average AICN reader would despise it, in the unlikely event that they would even watch something like this in the first place.

... anything Stephen Frears does . . . I'm already sold. Mrs. Henderson Presents? High Fidelity? Bring it on.

Loved Arterton as Strawberry Fields in QUANTUM OF SOLACE

    by spyguy

She should've been the main Bond girl in QoS instead of Olga Kurylenko.
