All For One, And One For Paul (W.S. Anderson)!!
Merrick here...
Paul W.S. Anderson will (at least) co-write and produce a 3-D adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' THE THREE MUSKETEERS (HERE
).
The intent is for the film to have a contemporary feel, though that does not mean ditching the period setting.
“We are definitely modernizing ‘The Three Musketeers’ without compromising the fun of shooting a period piece,” said Anderson, who hopes to shoot in France and Germany. “But in our film, corsets and feathered hats don’t take center stage. Our version is rich in eye-popping action, romance and adventure.”
...says THR's HeatVision Blog HERE.
Dumas' tale has been adapted more times than can be enumerated herein - including a 1903 version, a 1948 iteration starring Gene Kelly...
...this 1973 adaptation from Alexander and Ilya Salkind...
...and Stephen Herek's 1993 take starring Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Oliver Platt, and Chris O'Donnell...
The script for the new film is being co-written by BRIDGET JONES' Andrew Davies - no word on who'll direct.
“We are definitely modernizing ‘The Three Musketeers’ without compromising the fun of shooting a period piece,” said Anderson, who hopes to shoot in France and Germany. “But in our film, corsets and feathered hats don’t take center stage. Our version is rich in eye-popping action, romance and adventure.”

meh....
-
Like A Knight's Tale. That worked out well for everybody involved.
-
...that came up with this one?
-
Sean Pertwee as Cardinal Richelieu. you know it.
-
God this shit is going to be played out in a matter of months
-
...there is no hope...
-
Andrew Davies is a genius when it comes to adaptations. He's responsible for most of the Jane Austen adaptations on BBC and iTV in the last fifteen years. He also did the Bleak House miniseries for BBC and it was phenomenal.
-
a Knights Tale, right?arg.
-
nevermind.
-
Very unnecessary. everyone is doing it just so they can hike ticket prices. It's getting out of hand, we're gonna start seeing every stupid romantic comedy starring Sandra Bullock in 3-D. Will the madness end?
-
Isn't it? Well, at least it's not a remake....oh, wait.
-
you're welcome
-
Tim Curry as Cardinal Richelieu = Classic!
Plus De Mornay was going through her super hot stage!! -
Porthos: Philip Seymour Hoffman
Athos: John C. Reilly
Aramis: Daniel Day-Lewis (he can reuse the 'stache)
D'Artagnan: Paul Dano
Milady: Julianne Moore
Seriously, I'm not going to get too worked up about this. the Musketeers have been done so often and so goofily, what's one more bastardization? (unlike Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes, they might actually stick to the PLOT). -

keep the movies on the screen you numb nut producers, 3D is a gimmick that only serves to date the film... look at any 3D movie from the 80's, they suck because the 3D makes them outdated 20 years laterit's wonder why they do it...oh wait the extra 3 dollars they charge for the glasses is probabaly why, DERP!
-
Pull my finger.
-
Can't wait to hate it!

Best photography (natural lighting)
Fun Action
Just an all around great B-movie -
The Three Musketeers is my favorite book of all time and the idea that one of the greatest hacks in the industry is going to ruin it just isn't fair. No one has ever done a good adaption of the book and I am just now realizing that no one ever will. I never do talkbacks but this shit makes my blood boil. I mean 3-D for a period movie, WHY? 3-D only makes sense for crappy horror movies. I know a few of you will say "But I liked Event Horizon!" Well he didn't write that movie and hasn't used that cinematographer, Adrian Biddle, since either. Honestly the only way to do this right would be as a mini series on HBO with Christophe Gans directing or at least producing.

Since P.A. sucks, this is why he should just make it all crazy
by kbarber29
Again, I say he should have a couple of bros from the future with flame throwers and a Colt 9 get transported into the past and fuck some shit up, Musketeer wise.
-
Where's that dude at?
-

That Disney crap with Sheen, Sutherland and Platt....
by subliminaljones
is about as "contemporary" a Musketeer story one's stomach can take. I can only imagine what horrors this will bring.
-
Can we top it or did we blow our wad all on that one?

My balls being dragged across your face...in 3-D.
by cheyne_stoking_dms
-
And how can you have 'modern musketeers'?
-
Rachel Welch in 3D. Yummmmyyyy.......
-
Anderson and 3D. What could go wrong?
-
Oliver Reed was godlike in that.
-
That's how I remember how to differentiate him from director Paul T. Anderson (Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood).
-
Just digitize those and release them in 3D. savagedave's right, I feel like watching them RIGHT NOW.
-
Its got my ticket!
-
Fuck it. Just let him make a 3D shot-for-shot remake of Mortal Kombat. That's the only movie he's ever made that was, for its time and place in history, actually very enjoyable. If he's gonna ruin everything, at least give him a chance to ruin the only decent thing he's ever done.
-
Tim Roth was the bad in this version back in 2000 I think, used Hong Kong Style Martial Arts swordplay.
-
THERE WILL BE BLOOD. Davies is fantastic but nothing will save this. still I'm a sucker for a swashbuckler.
-
I need to know that he at least working on something, to give me something to look forward to for two or three years. This just leaves me feeling empty and alone. Modernize it while keeping it period fun. That sounds like the kind of fucking retarded shit WS would be interested in. What a douche.
-
I don't usually jump on a director for the fun of it, but I really have to question the choice of him directing three musketeers. UNLESS you drop the period piece setting. Mortal Kombat, Event Horizon and even AVP show that the man is capable of making a film of interesting athstetic. But a period piece? Hmmmm. Very, very odd choice. 3 Musketeers in space (or maybe a post-apocalyptic underwater world with shark-mutant overlords) might be more suitable for his talents. As for the sacred quality of the original text - those pages were turned into cinematic toilet paper long ago (Charlie Sheen as a Musketeer??? Charlie SHEEN???? Two and a half musketeers??? WTF?)
-
THE MUSKETEER? Wire-fu my arse. Stick with the Lester movies, kids. Oh, and the immortal euro-cartoon DOGTANIAN AND THE THREE MUSKEHOUNDS.
-
Lets not forget Chris O'Donnell.
-
...only worse.
-
Okay...we can definitely stand to lose ONE of these three Andersons. Guess whichone.
-
Need i say more?
-
should always take center stage.
-

I see he has already forgot Kung Fu Musketeer on the film
by kikuchiyoboy
"The Musketeer"
I wish I could forget that film. I still want my money back. They should have got Van Damme to do that film. -
Water Sports. The hits just keep on coming. Would this past seven day period qualify as one of the worst in news of new projects/attachments? Hasn't been good at any rate.
-
I firmly believe that Hollywood is retarded enough to do that and think it's clever.
-
I recall it being modernized, too. Despite being a period piece. I think it's overdue for a serious take, and would much prefer Ridley Scott to tackle it than that Robin Hood film.
-
... with this nonsense so he can be away from geek fantasy projects he'll only ruin.
-

This'll make The Man In The Iron Mask look like an epic...

Not that that was the worst film in the world, but I can't imagine that this latest debacle will be putting anything else to shame.

The Musketeers deserve better than this.
-
I feel another Knight's Tale coming on...
-
Gatsby beat me to it, so I echo the sentiment. A Knight's Tale was a bad idea, and one would hope that directors, writers and producers would learn from cinematic history, lest they be doomed to repeat it... much to our dislike.
-
with long pointy weapons thrust out towards the audience?
-
that 'Wank Stain' Anderson is doing this film as it keeps him well away from anything I remotely care about!!
I can hear the blaring Techno music now as a fencing frenzy scene unfolds on screen like a demented MTV video... -
Sep 02, 2009 1:22:27 PM CDT
I'd get slightly interested if they set it in the future.
by the_genteel_gentile
A sci-fi retelling I might actually want to see. I'll say one thing for Peter Hyams' Musketeer; He lit that thing great, it looks like a moving Carravagio. I enjoyed the fight scenes with the barrells and ladders aswell. I mean they weren't too fantastical, it's not like they went into wire-fu or something. Unfortunately that's about all the good that can be said for that picture, as the story and acting were pretty bad.
-
No adaptation will ever come close to Dogtanian and the Muskahounds.
-
Why has Hollywood treated this property as a cartoonish joke for the past 60 years? There has really only been one straightforward fun swashbuckling adaptation made that I can recall - sometime in the 30's. Every other adaptation has to be dumbed down and turned into a farce of some kind - 3 musketeers: the Brat Pack version! 3 musketeers: the kung fu version (co-starring the godawful Mena Suvari) Just make a straight forward fun yet gritty swashbuckler movie with great actors!
-
Seriously, how does shit like this happen? Are these people seriously THAT fucking stupid?
-
God his movie directing career is a string of god awful terrible movies.
-
but not by this guy. Do you have any idea of the shit I got for liking Event Horizon? I actually thought this guy had some visual talent. Boy did I back a winner. The sole accomplishment this guy's had since then is marrying Milla. AND you know she's gonna be Milady in this. Even though Milady is supposed to have a flawless English accent.
-
LMAO, oh Paul Water Shit Anderson, why oh why!?

Paul WS Anderson has achieved the pinacle of his career
by thelordofhell
By knocking up and marrying Milla Jovovich. But like Luc Besson, Milla will leave him a broken shell of a man.
-
sorry
-
from this talkback.
-
I am so sick of this contemporizing fad. If someone can't enjoy a movie without arena rock music or some goddamn terrible "modern" dialogue, fuck them! A Knights Tale was god-awful! I suppose though when trash like Final Destination can claim top honours at the box office, the idiots truly have taken over
-
I'm so tired of this fucking gimmick!!!
-
And fuck this 3D bullshit too! It's never worked, and will never work. I'm sorry, but some cheapo effect that adds NOTHING to a story and cannot be reproduced at an in-home setting is a waste of an extra 3$ admission price
-
Sep 02, 2009 3:31:34 PM CDT
I actually thought Death Race was surprisingly decent.
by the_genteel_gentile
Definitely "Weiner Schmuck's" best effort since Event Horizon.
-
Oh crap! We have a terrible director that can't film action scenes! How can we save it? Oh. 3D! *Ca-CHING!*
-
I hope there's a scene where they throw coins at the viewer or parry and thrust and it looks like the swords going to go right into your eye, whoa! If you have a family of four, it'll only cost $100 for the tickets alone, not including popcorn! Totally worth it, dude!
-
he seems like a genuinely sweet, humble guy, as opposed to we bitter, enraged geeks that post here!
-
I talk to a lot of people and if there's one thing the public is clamoring for, it's anothe 3 Musketeers movie. Thanks Paul!

Someone please stop him. This guy has the reverse Midas touch to anything he has ever been involved with. No one can improve on the Richard Lester films. The Chris O'Donnell Keifer Sutherland version was bad enough. Anything from this guy will make that disaster look like something by Shakespeare. And as for the previous poster who pointed out that Paul W.S. Anderson hasn't used Adrian Biddle as cinematographer since "Event Horizon". Unfortunately no one can as Biddle died a few years ago (a heart attack I seem to remember). At least he left a body of work to be proud of.
-
"Water Shit" (I still like that one) may be the sweetest guy in the world, donate all his money to charity, share his wife's charms with his friends and family, has tears that cure cancer...what does it matter? He makes shit films, and this is a filmm geek site.
-
Wow! It's like the sword is coming right at me... again! Hey! That sword is coming right at me, too. Oh. Another sword. And some guy swinging on a rope. And more swords.
-
Terrible, terrible movie. Couldn't see a damn thing that was going on. The 93 version was cheesy but fun. Oliver Platt as a swordsman, who would have guessed?
-
....that should get a 3D airing! Fucking 'convert' any number of previous classics for a re-release. This fucker is a very one-dimensional writer / director at best!
-
that associates me with this douche bag.
-
... I liked 'The Musketeer' from 2001 . . . great action, looked cool, and Roth was great . . . lots of fun! Would LOVE to see more like that!
-
I just feel bad for the guy...I'm sure he sees the horrendous abuse he suffers from everyone...
-
Then queue up the Netflix and watch it again. =)
But please let this die by the way side. I'd love to see a 2 film epic of this book. It could be so much fun like Pirates of The Caribbean, but without all the ghouls and gobblins. -
... I just might. And, is it just me, or does NetFlix need to do a MUCH better job of getting stuff OnDemand? I'm sure they have a lot, but I've SEEN those . . . put some of the obscure horror titles on there!
-
We are the three a-aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa migos! And amigos forever we'll be. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
-
issues he may suffer from go away the moment he eyes his wife. Yea, WS's got it pretty bad.
-
When is Paul Thomas Anderson getting back in the game?
-
Cardinal MilkyWay and MiLady DeSnickers...and don't forget to throw in a couple of fun skirmishes with the one-eyed Monsieur Cyclops himself, Baron Butterfinger and his men, the Butterfinger BBs.
-
if Anderson's "vision" is allowed to happen. argh.
-
as Constance. From Raquel Welch to....her? yikes.
-
has officially become annoying
-
for shame merrick, for shame.
-
Shame. He was a fantastic DP (THE MUMMY, THE PRINCESS BRIDE, V FOR VENDETTA).

Modernizing period settings, is that the new trend now?
by aliendragqueen
Inglorious Basterds, Sherlock Holmes...and to a lesser extent A Knight's Tale, we have you to thank.
-
It had to be said.
-
Just goes to show how shit the movies are. I heard theres a book though...
-
3 D's for Anderson.
-
Don't bother making it.
-
Spam Jackson IS muthafuckin Athos
-
...is a porn staring his wife as she gets her Pussy and Ass rammed and reamed by Wesly Pipes (yes, there's some fool in the pron industry that goes by that name.I'm sure Snipes is getting a chuckle out of that while serving time.)only to have former Tber and Pronstar Kurtlockwood provide the finishing "touches".Pearl Necklace, Milla?
-
Anderson's chance to make a really good film. I'm keenly interested to see what happens here :)
-
CGI Roy Kinnear into it. He was in three Musketeer films but sadly died during filming of the last one. Perhaps better remembered as Veruca Salt's Dad in Willy Wonka. He's a hero!
-
finding his first movie Shopping to be quite good. Could i be that mistaken about it?
-
Although I feel slightly ashamed to say it.
-
This 3d shit has to stop, and no more movies from Paul Wank Stain Anderson. Death Race was fun but it could have been straight to dvd...
-
We have 1 IMAX that shows cave movies or shit like that.
No 3d.
Take THAT Hollywood!
-
"In America, you watch 3D.
In Sweden, 3D watches you." -
It was half decent exploitation; it had some good stunts, little CGI, and some hilariously bad dialogue. Lets face it, if it was made 20 years ago and Tarantino had ever referenced it in one of his films, everyone would make out like it was great.
-
I'm not too sure about the last part, man. I think that Paul WC Anderson's movies are the kind of bad that makes the exploitation movies of old seem charming and honest by comparison.
-
Sold his soul to the devil cause it certainly wasn't talent that got him that ass.

Then imagine what it will happen to him when the devil is going to collect his credit.

Chamberlain, Finley and Reed and York as D'artagnan. Heston was nicely evil Richelieu and the fight scenes where great. Enough with the remakes. Do something that hasnt been doen to death like Scaramouche or The Scarlet Pimpernel if you want to do swashbucklers.

can not be beat. its amazing. this is another unwanted remake.
