All For One, And One For Paul (W.S. Anderson)!!

Published at:  Sep 02, 2009 10:40:09 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Paul W.S. Anderson will (at least) co-write and produce a 3-D adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' THE THREE MUSKETEERS (HERE).

The intent is for the film to have a contemporary feel, though that does not mean ditching the period setting.

“We are definitely modernizing ‘The Three Musketeers’ without compromising the fun of shooting a period piece,” said Anderson, who hopes to shoot in France and Germany. “But in our film, corsets and feathered hats don’t take center stage. Our version is rich in eye-popping action, romance and adventure.”

...says THR's HeatVision Blog HERE.

Dumas' tale has been adapted more times than can be enumerated herein - including a 1903 version, a 1948 iteration starring Gene Kelly...

...this 1973 adaptation from Alexander and Ilya Salkind...

...and Stephen Herek's 1993 take starring Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Oliver Platt, and Chris O'Donnell...

The script for the new film is being co-written by BRIDGET JONES' Andrew Davies - no word on who'll direct.

Andrew Davies is a genius when it comes to adaptations. He's responsible for most of the Jane Austen adaptations on BBC and iTV in the last fifteen years. He also did the Bleak House miniseries for BBC and it was phenomenal.

The Three Musketeers is my favorite book of all time and the idea that one of the greatest hacks in the industry is going to ruin it just isn't fair. No one has ever done a good adaption of the book and I am just now realizing that no one ever will. I never do talkbacks but this shit makes my blood boil. I mean 3-D for a period movie, WHY? 3-D only makes sense for crappy horror movies. I know a few of you will say "But I liked Event Horizon!" Well he didn't write that movie and hasn't used that cinematographer, Adrian Biddle, since either. Honestly the only way to do this right would be as a mini series on HBO with Christophe Gans directing or at least producing.

    by lochkray

I don't usually jump on a director for the fun of it, but I really have to question the choice of him directing three musketeers. UNLESS you drop the period piece setting. Mortal Kombat, Event Horizon and even AVP show that the man is capable of making a film of interesting athstetic. But a period piece? Hmmmm. Very, very odd choice. 3 Musketeers in space (or maybe a post-apocalyptic underwater world with shark-mutant overlords) might be more suitable for his talents. As for the sacred quality of the original text - those pages were turned into cinematic toilet paper long ago (Charlie Sheen as a Musketeer??? Charlie SHEEN???? Two and a half musketeers??? WTF?)

A sci-fi retelling I might actually want to see. I'll say one thing for Peter Hyams' Musketeer; He lit that thing great, it looks like a moving Carravagio. I enjoyed the fight scenes with the barrells and ladders aswell. I mean they weren't too fantastical, it's not like they went into wire-fu or something. Unfortunately that's about all the good that can be said for that picture, as the story and acting were pretty bad.

Why has Hollywood treated this property as a cartoonish joke for the past 60 years? There has really only been one straightforward fun swashbuckling adaptation made that I can recall - sometime in the 30's. Every other adaptation has to be dumbed down and turned into a farce of some kind - 3 musketeers: the Brat Pack version! 3 musketeers: the kung fu version (co-starring the godawful Mena Suvari) Just make a straight forward fun yet gritty swashbuckler movie with great actors!

Someone please stop him. This guy has the reverse Midas touch to anything he has ever been involved with. No one can improve on the Richard Lester films. The Chris O'Donnell Keifer Sutherland version was bad enough. Anything from this guy will make that disaster look like something by Shakespeare. And as for the previous poster who pointed out that Paul W.S. Anderson hasn't used Adrian Biddle as cinematographer since "Event Horizon". Unfortunately no one can as Biddle died a few years ago (a heart attack I seem to remember). At least he left a body of work to be proud of.

"Water Shit" (I still like that one) may be the sweetest guy in the world, donate all his money to charity, share his wife's charms with his friends and family, has tears that cure cancer...what does it matter? He makes shit films, and this is a filmm geek site.

Terrible, terrible movie. Couldn't see a damn thing that was going on. The 93 version was cheesy but fun. Oliver Platt as a swordsman, who would have guessed?

But please let this die by the way side. I'd love to see a 2 film epic of this book. It could be so much fun like Pirates of The Caribbean, but without all the ghouls and gobblins.

It was half decent exploitation; it had some good stunts, little CGI, and some hilariously bad dialogue. Lets face it, if it was made 20 years ago and Tarantino had ever referenced it in one of his films, everyone would make out like it was great.

Chamberlain, Finley and Reed and York as D'artagnan. Heston was nicely evil Richelieu and the fight scenes where great. Enough with the remakes. Do something that hasnt been doen to death like Scaramouche or The Scarlet Pimpernel if you want to do swashbucklers.
