Lionsgate Sets KICK-ASS For April 16th, 2010; Moves THE EXPENDABLES To August!

Just a few minutes ago, Christopher Mintz-Plasse tweeted along the news that Lionsgate has settled on a release date for Matthew Vaughn's much-anticipated KICK-ASS. April 16th, 2010! This checks out with Lionsgate's official Twitter feed (which I wasn't following prior to a minute ago), which also announced that Sylvester Stallone's all-star action extravaganza, THE EXPENDABLES, has moved from April to August 20th, 2010.
Both moves make sense to me. KICK-ASS is a modestly-budgeted franchise starter that could catch fire in a non-competitive April, when comic book fans will be looking for some superhero action to tide them over until IRON MAN 2. And THE EXPENDABLES feels like that perfect, end-of-the-summer blast that should play strongly through Labor Day weekend - if it's as insane and wonderful as I think it's going to be.
The biggest April opening on record is 2009's FAST AND FURIOUS, which did a healthy $70 million. As for films opening in the middle of the month, SCARY MOVIE 4 scored $40 million over the April 14th weekend in 2004, while THE SCORPION KING somehow raked in $36 million over the April 19th frame in 2002. KICK-ASS will be speeding its way toward profit if it throws up an opening weekend number anywhere in this range.

Wise, in that both are flicks that fanboys are salivating for, and will both likely catch fire upon release. Personally, I'm excited for both. This means the END of next summer should rock. Oh, and fuck all who post "first" with nothing pertinent to say.

or the release date. All this means is that I have to wait longer to see the Expendables(lame). Kick Ass is a little known movie. It will depend on marketing and studio support if it is gonna do well. I'm really looking forward to it. Dear God, please make these movies as bad ass as possible. Feel free to divinely intervene as needed. Amen

im ashamed it has april record opening i didnt know that. i just saw it on dvd, i thought the first one was pretty good for what it was. but the new one was unwatchable. the opening scene started alright until it turned into a ridiculous scene of truck separating and bouncing physics that didnt make any sense. the story and characters were so one dimensional. there was a scene of cars going through caves in the middle, and then the grand finale action sequence? a chase though the caves, looked just like the earlier scene. i cant believe vin did this, it was hard to watch. april record? wtf, no one cares about this movie.

THIS IS A BAD IDEA. I WAS REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING STALLONE AND THE LADS SHOW ALL THOSE YOUNG GUYS HOW IT'S DONE. NOW WE HAVE TO WIT A WHOLE YEAR. AND PERSONALLY, I THINK KICK ASS LOOKS LIKE A PILE OF COMPLETE SHIT. I DON'T WANT TO SEE A YOUNG BOY RUN AROUND IN A RIDICULOUS COSTUME WITH A STUPID LITTLE SCHOOLGIRL AS HIS PARTNER. Who gives a rats ass about Kiss Ass, it's a Matthew Vaughn movie. He may be miles better than his mate Ritchie but he's no great shakes. The Expendables is my second most anticipated movie of 2010 (after Iron Man 2), i can't wait a year, i just can't. Damn you Lionsgate!

APRIL 23rd was a great kick start to SUMMER with a film like THE EXPENDABLES. I don't know what to think of the new AUGUST date. Sure it could be a good movie or a bad one. Just hate that we have to wait till the end of summer.

Knew it. I just fucking knew it. Once Fast and Furious moved its date from April to stay away from Harry Potter and Transformers, that it was going to become a studio norm now. So that means will get fuck all for summer movies once the summer happens. Just like we did this July.
