Ain't It Cool News (

Learn Who Lena Headey,
TV’s Sarah Connor, Plays In

I am – Hercules!!
“Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” star Lena Headey will play the duplicitous Cersei Lannister in HBO's pilot for “A Game of Thrones.” Cersei is the twin sister of Jaime Lannister, played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (“Virtuality”), with whom she indulges an incestuous relationship that spans decades. Along the way she marries the hard-drinking King Robert Baratheon, played by Mark Addy (“Still Standing”). Also cast in the project are Sean Bean (“Crusoe”) as Ned Stark, Kit Harrington as Jon Snow, Jack Gleeson (“Batman Begins”) as Joffrey Baratheon, Harry Lloyd (“Robin Hood”) as Viserys Targaryen, Jennifer Ehle (“Possession”) as Catelyn Stark, Iain Glen ("Resident Evil: Extinction") as Ser Jorah Mormont, Tamzin Merchant (2005's "Pride and Prejudice") as Daenerys, Richard Madden (the BBC's "Hope Springs") as Robb Stark, Sophie Turner as Sansa Stark, Maisie Williams as Arya Stark and Alfie Allen ("The Other Boleyn Girl") as Theon. “The Visitor” director Tom McCarthy is reuniting with his “Station Agent” star, Peter Dinklage (who plays Tyrion Lannister), for the project, based on George R.R. Martin’s series of “A Song of Ice and Fire” fantasy novels . Find Mo Ryan’s Chicago Tribune story on the matter here.

    The good news...

    by waynefoolx

I'm guessing Martin will time the release of the next book to coincide when the series comes out. So even if the series sucks (not sayin it will) at least we'll FINALLY get the next book.

Lena Hedy and Sean Bean starring HBO's first fantasy project. I love Hedy as Sarah Connor and Sean Bean is practically an icon in England. This is definitely something to be interested in.

"Enough casting news, when is this thing going to be shot" It will start shooting in late October (the 26th, to be exact). There are still two major roles to cast for the pilot (Bran and Drogo) and a slew of minor ones. Then costuming, rehearsals, etc.

Great casting. Tom McCarthy has managed to acquire formidable talent for every role on this show so far.<p> Aside from the well-known "300" and "The Sarah Connor Chronicles," Lena Headey has done some excellent acting in her career. Plus she's British, and speaks with a lovely accent that will go a long way toward manifesting the degenerate Cersei.<p> I was skeptical of this series at first, but now I find myself hopeful. I hope they hit it out of the park.

  • Sept. 1, 2009, 11:20 p.m. CST

    Very strange casting

    by Narcissus

I'm so not seeing this casting - with the exception of Peter Dinkledge. Nicholas and Lena would be great... as the heroic Starks, not the villanous and incestuous Lancasters. In fact, nobody else really looks anything like how they are described in the books.

Still not sure how all the original side stories and length will make any die hard fans happy with a more concise story but at least the talent is kicking ass.

HERCULES!! What are you doing, man??

    by daimonion

You just spoiled the great big mystery of season one and thus ruined the shocking climax of a revelation the viewers are supposed to talk about long after. How bout you remove it? Yes, the thing about the children.

  • Sept. 2, 2009, 12:06 a.m. CST

    Hell the fuck yes.

    by ebonic_plague

I was wondering who they could cast who would look at least a little bit like she could be Nikolaj Costner-Whatsit's twin, and I think Lena Headey is as close to that as anyone could be. Cersei's a hell of a role, too, she's definitely a "drama queen" --Headey will get to gnaw on the scenery if she wants to. Also for the guy who asked, if they stick to the books, she'll be naked (at a fairly critical plot point) in the very first episode.

  • Sept. 2, 2009, 12:15 a.m. CST

    by The Goat

That's like saying Mark Hamill has just been cast as Luke Skywalker, who is the secret son of the evil overlord Darth Vader and brother of the noble Princess Leia! God damn that's unforgivable! Hell, its the secret that drives the entire plot and plunges the entire kingdom into chaos!

  • Sept. 2, 2009, 12:58 a.m. CST

    by bluechao

Really, I appreciate it. Hopefully not too many came by and had it ruined for them.

  • Sept. 2, 2009, 12:59 a.m. CST

    by The Goat

Its the huge reveal at the end of the pilot! And like I said, it drives the entire plot of the story! Herc needs to be sent to Ser Ilyn Payne for immediate beheading! Honestly, that shit blows my mind, especially for a site that uses SPOILER tags! Fucking unbelievable

  • Sept. 2, 2009, 1:17 a.m. CST

Holy Shit, all you did was a add a Spoiler tag!

    by The Goat

This is a character announcement, just remove the goddamn sentence! If you write an article reviewing the books or the pilot script, and include spoilers, fine. But don't include a huge spoiler in the second sentence of a casting announcement, fucktards!

  • Sept. 2, 2009, 1:23 a.m. CST

    by The Goat

Cersei is already Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, wife of King Robert, when the series begins. She doesn't marry him "along the way." If you're going to do your best to ruin what is potentially the best television series ever, at least get your facts right.

  • Sept. 2, 2009, 1:48 a.m. CST

    When will they cast

    by SleazyDragon

Roy Dotrice. Seriously, have you heard his work on the first three audio books? He would be perfect as Lord Jeor Mormont. The man is a legend. Great casing so far by the way, except for Tyrion. He is more Warwick Davis (Willow Ufgood) in his prime than this sham, or even Jordan Prentice (Jimmy the racist dwarf from In Bruges) would make a good Tyrion. I'll still be all over this though. Cant wait to see Dolorous Ed in the flesh too. He has the best lines in the books.

  • Sept. 2, 2009, 2:51 a.m. CST

  • Sept. 2, 2009, 6:28 a.m. CST

Reporting on this has been wrong on this site before.

    by V'Shael

But that's what happens when your research consists of a cursory use of Google. <p> Herc reported on Tyrion referencing a Warhammer 40K character, I think it was, back in the early days of this production. <p> So it's no surprise that he's got the wrong Sophie Turner referenced as well.

  • Sept. 2, 2009, 6:35 a.m. CST

Not the Sophie Turner from Doctor Who

    Not what I pictured...

    by Red Ned Lynch

...but based on what I've seen of her I have reasonable faith she can pull it off. I am, against my will, getting excited about this. I know I will be crushingly disappointed but it's getting harder to not have hope that this will be good. It can't be, there is no reasonable way to shape these books into workable series form, and the byzantine nature of the narrative is an integral part of what makes them so special. But it's getting harder not to be excited. I would so rather be skeptical and pleasantly surprised than eager and crushed.

    by V'Shael

And not freaky as in "Bites off chicken heads". Freaky in the Haley Joel Osment or Dakota Fanning way. Where you look at them and say "How the fuck is that kid acting that well?" Makes you believe in re-incarnation or something. That kind of freak.

    Brienne, Maid of Tarth?

    by BiggusDickus

I'm buggered if I can think of any actress for this - fairly major - role. Brienne is a big (over six foot), muscular, plain girl and a demon with a sword. Whoever they cast must not be a Xena-esque sexbomb and has to be able to fucking act.<p>Anybody? I'm stumped!

  • Sept. 3, 2009, 9:49 a.m. CST

    by BilboRing

Everyone wants it to be Jon Snow but I have to disagree. Mainly because he has wolf dreams. Targerians (spelling) all have dreams of dragons. The starks all have dreams of wolves. I think Jon is a Stark. I know that everyone wants it to me Rhaegar and Ned's sister but I don't think that's the case. Tyrion dreams of dragons but I can't figure out who his parents would be. We could all be dead wrong and GRRM can just introduce new characters. I think Dark Star is the other head. He's got the levandar eyes and all that.

    @BiggusDickus : Brienne

    by V'Shael

About casting Brienne. I don't think they necessarily need to move away from a good looking actress. Though it's not usual in television, attractiveness levels can go down as well as up, with the help of makeup. <p> Look at Charlize Theron in Monster, or Cameron Diaz in Being John Malkovich. <p> Get the right actress for the role (able to handle a sword, and act) and let the make up department worry about making her a plain jane.

  • Sept. 3, 2009, 10:12 a.m. CST

    by thewiseman

It would be an awful casting choice because of her acting ability, but i always pictured Chyna from WWE as Brienne.<p>With regards to coldhands,i dont think its Benjen. Mainly because i want him to be alive and well. but i cant come up with anyone else he could be.<p>2 of the 3 heads of the dragon are dany and tyrion.their is a theory of tyrions father being a targaryen and not Tywin. i think it comes from when the red viper is telling his tale of visiting casterley rock many years ago. The 3rd head i also dont think is Jon, but again, i dont know who it could be, maybe a Martell.

If they can cut large books into movies, they can surely cut them into series. It's just not going to be a scene-for-scene adaptation. <p> Watchmen might have spoiled people in that regard.

    by BiggusDickus

You've given me food for thought, boys...<p>Dany (obviously) and Tyrion (dragon dreams) but maybe not Jon after all? Hmmm...Now I'm thinking about one of the Sand Snakes (Arianne? Nym?) or maybe a powerplay in the Iron Islands (Asha Greyjoy?) - two 'sisters' and one 'brother' for the three heads of the dragon, right? <p>Damn that Martin bloke! Just when I thought I had it all figured out!

  • Sept. 3, 2009, 2:53 p.m. CST

    by BilboRing

I am sure we are all wrong. I am sure GRRM is not even sure anymore. Just wish he would stop chatting about HBO and FINISH THE 5TH BOOK!!! I am reading the books over for the 2nd time. Still on Book 2 but Shireen (Stannis' daughter) has nightmares about dragons and she has the "grey scale." Does that mean anything? Who knows. She is not dreaming of the dragons like Tyrion and Dany but a nightmare is still a dream, right? I still think he will introduce new POV characters to surprise us. I like Asha and think she will rule the iron men when all is said (dead) and done. I think the brothers will all be torched with their grand scheme of taking Dany.

    Regarding Bronn

    by bluechao

While I too have amused myself with images of Bronn working his way into a position to seat his scoundrel ass on the Iron Throne, I don't think it will happen. Bronn wasn't originally supposed to be as big a character as he's become, but GRRM liked him and kept finding ways he helped the plot so he's still around. But he's probably not a part of GRRM's overall plan for the series. But who knows, maybe he'll get in there and rule for like a fortnight before he gets removed by someone else. Maybe in the confusion after Dany arrives, he'll seize power briefly only to be depose days later.

This is the only set of books I've ever read where I get so muich more out a second reading than I did with the first. The first time I read these I was pretty confused part of the time. Hell, it took me along time to realize that the group of dudes led by Dondarrion were the same ones Ned had sent out after Gregor in the first book. On this second read (currently on Book 3) I'm grasping so much more of the story and all the little nuances and details and hints he throws in there. As much as I thoroughly enjoyed them the first time (although I thought Dany getting eaten out by her handservants was a bit juvenile and much), the second time around they're that much better. God, I want ADWD so bad...FUCK!

Best fighter is generally acknowledged to be......

    by gooseud

if we are talking best ever, or in the context of the books, the late great Arthur Dayne, Thw Sword Of The Morning, is universally acknowledged as the best of the era of the books, and one of the best ever. He walked right through Eddard like shit through a goose, and only the backstabbing treachery of Eddard's bog friends saved Eddard's life. Thats the great thing about MArtin's novels, you never know exactly where you stand. The two most truly good characters were on the side of evil (Arthur Dayne and Rhaegar), and Eddard (another truly good character) was only able to defeat Dayne by cheating. Never quite know where you stand morally in these books.

  • Sept. 4, 2009, 10:26 p.m. CST

    Best fighters

    by gooseud

It is easy to forget due to his fat sloppiness in the books, but Robert took over the #1 spot when Arthur Dayne died. Only Selmy in his prime could have given him a run. This is obviously open to interpretation, but thats how I read it.

  • Sept. 5, 2009, 12:41 a.m. CST

    What about Brienne?

    by BiggusDickus

She might be rougher than a badger's arse, but she's a bit handy with a blade, and I'm sure both Bronn and Loras Tyrell would've made a good showing against Ser Arthur Dayne, too.<p>And gooseud - totally agree about the moral aspect of these books. Notice the way Jaime is slowly becoming virtuous. Superb writing!

A small bit of info RE:ADWD

    by crappyfun

Found this. Apparently there was some kind of announcement by Bantam at Comic-Con regarding Book V: "In addition we know that the book is coming in at 1200 MS pages slightly shorter than A Clash of Kings, via Anne Groell's statements at Comic-Con, which gives Bantam over 300 MS pages breathing room before they have to start worrying about splitting it. That also means that, since she also confirmed that over 1000 MS pages are finished and locked, the Meereenese Knot is located within the final 20%, perhaps less, of the book to be written, regardless of where it takes place chronologically." That gives me a small bit of hope...

  • Sept. 5, 2009, 10:35 a.m. CST

    by crappyfun

"That's correct. I talked to Anne at length about it... well... because I was standing right next to her for most of the convention as she answered that question over and over and over again. George has indeed passed the 1000 page mark as of last week and those are, to him according to Anne, finished pages that will not be returned to. He also has several hundred more pages of not completed chapters that every week he makes progress on. Some of those will be in Dance; others will be in the next book. Anne also thinks she'll be getting the book by October or November, which to her would probably make it a February or March 2010 release, although the progress he is making is quickly happening and she could receive it sooner if those incomplete or mostly complete chapters come together faster. I say don't get your hopes up. So good things are happening. Maybe not fast enough for some of you but fast enough for moi. It just shows that yes he is working on the book despite what some people on the internet(s) say."

lets have a look at your top ten

  • Sept. 7, 2009, 12:34 a.m. CST

    Edric Dayne

    by bluechao

Yeah, Jon Snow's milk-brother. You have to wonder where he fits into it all. Currently there is no Sword of the Morning - and it doesn't look like Darkstar is soon to get the job. I wonder how they ensure Dawn only goes to those noble enough to wield it, why couldn't someone like Darkstar just take it? Does the blade reject those now pure enough (that thought just occurred to me)? One theory is that Dawn is really Lightbringer and the Daynes have been holding it all these years. Not a stretch, it's name is just a small step away from a synonym already. It might be they expect the PwwP/AA will be of their house, maybe they think they are descendants, maybe they are right? Maybe like 100 other prophesies so far, it won't come true or will get screwed up or has been misunderstood somehow.

  • Sept. 7, 2009, 10:33 a.m. CST

by blackthought ten...i will take some time to marinate on that...true about where edric fits...i'm actually pretty intrigued by darkstar even with a lot of hate for the attempt kill of myrcella but i wonder if there is more to that that we'll get in future installments. right now a lot of ppl look at him like some mustache twriling evil attempted girl killer or something. with that said he'd be in my top ten as fighers go. he a badass. i do wonder who will wield the sword of morning? darkstar? whom? not littlefinger...surely...
