It looks like a tweeny 90210 version of the show. Truly, the end of the franchise.

Nothing new here at all, really...

I really can't figure out who watches these shows and keeps them going. They're awful -- poorly written and bad acting. If the popularity of this series is any indication, it shows why no good sci-fi movies/series are made these days: Producers realize sci-fi fans have low standards, so they can get away with serving them shit. It's shit with some FX to serve as whip cream, but putting whip cream on shit doesn't make it chocolate pudding. Please people, don't watch this show.
-
People actually watch that shit?
-
"sci-fi fans have low standards" as opposed to action film fans, racing car film fans, western fans, detective fans, war film fans, teen drama fans...Stargate SG-1 in its middle period was as good SF as has been done on TV-- and the base concept of an alien phone network that lets you walk to other planets is both classic and wonderfulI'll give this thing a shot-- hey, Atlantis made decent use of Dave Foley for an episode, and that sort of thing should be encouraged.
-
As I recall, SG weapons go through ammunition at a ferocious rate. Will anyone be keeping track of this, given they aren't likely to be getting resupplied any time soon?

£20 says it'll do better than Dollhouse though...

and be a better show.
-
They may wind up ignoring it completely. SG-1 got away with having everyone speak English (more or less) without even an attempted nod at a universal translator of some sort.
Or they may just resort to energy weapons very very quickly. -
the fun factor. I'm just not seeing much fun to be had here. What might be missing is someone to root for because as of now all I see is a scraggly guy, Lou Diamond Phillips and a Jonah Hill clone, none of which I really care what happens to. But at least they are trying, that counts for something I guess.Stargate Atlantis wasn't a good series but I think it had more the right attitude. Ideally I wish the whole Stargate franchise would end, it's like the franchise that ate the Sci Fi network. Why do they invest so much in it?
-
Having a super fast internet connection in college made blowing through 6 seasons of that show really easy. Atlantis wasn't very good aside from its first season, and I'm not sure what to think about Universe. The one thing I hated about Stargate though was that it seemed that it caused the death of Farscape on SciFi channel.
Oh yeah, that video doesn't work. Nothing but audio with no video, just a "Loading..." screen. -
Both Stargate shows had fans, and so will this one. I don't know if it will go beyond five seasons, but it looks good and has a lot in common with Galaxy Epress 999, which you losers don't even know about or what country it came from. No one cares about your opinions, which are shit. Yes, I will be paying attention to what you guys say.(Chuck, chuck)
-
Instead of this lowres rubbish for the few
-
I guess it makes me lowbrow, but I love Atlantis and thoroughly enjoyed the last three seasons, probably more than SG-1. I'll give Universe a shot when it comes out. I doubt it will be better than BSG or Farscape, but being better than Voyager shouldn't take much at all.
-
this show gets a million spin offs and we couldn't get 2 more as promised Farscape seasons. total shit.
-
Yeah it had a bit of wobbly start, as do most sci-fi shows, but it soon built up it's own mythology and a real working universe with very few continuity issues. It was solid. Atlantis folowed it well, but something went completely apeshit in season 4 and it never recovered. Really looking forward to SGU :) Tbh if you didn't like the show thats fine. My Mrs doesn't like it either. But don't come here just to slag it off when you obviously haven't watched all 10 seasons of SG1 and 5 seasons of SGA (+movies) If you have an honest critique, make it, but "Stargate is shit cos I said so" isn't a reasoned response.
-
Commercialism has reached a new low.
-
And there was too much "star trek" crap for my liking.
-
Still cant be.ive he's in this. Beggie for sucks sake! lol But I always enjoyed Stargate, but was less of a fasn of Atlantis as thought the Wraith were a crappy villian. Get a good villian and all will be will with this :)

Robert Carlyle could read a phone book and I'd watch it.

It's too bad he isn't the next Doctor Who. Man, that would be sweet.
-
Go Stargate.
-
As an poster above noted, the Wraith were terrible villains. And I hate the fact that Farscape was purged in favor of SG-1. Instead we get such pablum as "Warehouse 13" and Eureka.
I have hopes for SG:Universe but it does rather look like 90210: Lost in Space. All that's needed is a cheeky robot, Wil Wheaton and a evil bumbler (handsome, pretty Dr. Smith).
Oh, and Jack isn't looking so good in late middle age. Too bad about Don S. Davis, perhaps the most authentic portrayal of a USAF officer in science fiction television. -
I'm a huge of SG1 fan up until the end of season 8, and then I tolerated seasons 9 & 10.
But I thought Atlantis sucked from the beginning. Great cast with a fantastic premise and then they proceeded to do nothing but rehash old SG1 plotlines. Fuckers even brought back Replicators for fuck's sake!
What finally made me stop watching Atlantis was the retarded way they killed Carson Beckett. Not only was it unecessary and poorly done, but it was a budget episode filmed entirely on their stock sets. Crap. -
Yes, the one posted here is slightly recut from the longer (better quality stream) at http://stargate.mgm.com/view/content/1079/index.html
As for why people watch it? It's short-form storytelling in a long-form television arc. Any technology previously established is fair game for the writers. Characters act 'in character' with established personalities and motivations.
It is also the only Science Fiction show where the characters behave with ANY common sense. This is what makes them palatable and identifiable with current audiences. They know the Frog/Scorpion story and actually REMEMBER IT!!! -
Same old stuff we've seen. What kind of non-event is this?
-
Dicksucker locked himself in his room watching the new Stargay trailer over and over and over again. I guess I'll never know what it's like to have a real son...*sigh*
-
LOL, talk about damning with faint praise.
-
Simpler and more interesting. Got bloated on Scifi and Atlantis was never really as appealing, even if it had fun characters.
-
This shit's coming out of the same ass that last night's shit came out of, so I'm confident it's going to be every bit as good.
-
Quality's not as good, but a completely new trailer!
http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=hGHE-Qwzx1s -
why fucking tune into a show about a giant spaceship with lasers and weapons to watch a fucking love story? you can get stories like that ANYWHERE.
-
All we need now is a JJ Abrams "reboot" of the movie and The Gate will be as devalued as The Trek.

I don't think it's ever been done, at least not seriously. Alien Nation came closest...
I bet people would pay for a sex scene between a human and the creature from Star Trek VI whose genitals were on its knees.

by blhotz
Also trailer is months old! But, yay, another talkback!
-
...in a few years, bet on it. Of course, by then Zac Efron will be old enough to play Jack O'Neill.
-
I liked SG1 on Showtime, and most of the time on Sci Fi, I Hope it is as good. Sg1 lost a lot when Anderson left.
-
Crappy villains... the Wraith were all uber strong in the premiere, taking almost a full clip from a P-90 to put down, but later in the series you could kill them with a few shots from a pistol it seemed... plus, they're a pretty boring villain to begin with, compared with the Goa'uld. The rehashing of storylines from SG1 didn't help either. There were some really good episodes here and there, but not enough to make the show worth it.
-
And the lack of any real villains besides the Goauld (maybe the Replicators) got stale. And they completely fucked the Asgard (come on, some of them should have ascended . . . unless there was a compelling reason why they couldn't, besides the whole cloning thing).Hate to say it, but without any consistent external threats like the Gouald or the Wraith (fucking stupid they were . . . if they had just enslaved and eaten people, without all that life force hooey I would have liked them more.) where can they go but with consistent internal conflict. Not even Lost is just about the group dynamics . . . they have got smokey, the others and then the tailies, and the frieghterees, and then the dharma initiative and then . . . they do tend to absorb the source of conflict and identify with it dont they . . . might negate what I just said . . .
-
I dunno if a series based in the Stargate mythos NEEDS a single consistent supervillain.
I think you could build many great stories about the team simply exploring world, after world, after world, with each one featuring its own dangers and mysteries.
I harken back to the early episodes of Sliders (which were awesome) vs. the later ones (which sucked).
When the show was simply about seeing a different alternate reality each week, it was awesome. When it became about an inter-dimensional war, I lost interest.
I think the main reason producers feel they have to resort to one consistent villain is because it's cheaper to reuse the same alien fx/costumes and the same environments, instead of having to come up with new aliens and environments each week.
Like, imagine if Quantum Leap had introduced a recurring villain who was following Sam through time. That would have really sucked. -
. . . they introduced FTL starships. It totally negated what made Stargate different from other sci-fi/space opera franchises -- the idea that FTL is impossible except through a stargate which is too small for a spaceship to fit through.
-
that you come to aintitcool to get your news about entertainment, read the articles and yet have the audacity to look down on stargate fans...
-
The alternative to a "single consistent supervillain" is put a new fake nose on the next guest star, aka, ST:TOS, ST:TNG, ST:DS9 and ST:Voy. I will say that I got really bored with Crais during Farscape's first season. But I was never grew bored with Scorpius.
Even the 7-8 years of Goa'uld evilness wasn't truly recurring. Aphophis, then the "system lords" (and my favorite Lord Yu. "You go Yu!") and their various minors (Lord Mot, Hathor/Heru'ur, Nirti), then Annubis, then Ba'al. They never really got stale.
The Ori had promise but never really delivered. Still, the Wraith purely sucked. A year of episodes unraveling the Pegasus "Asgard" mystery could have been interesting, as well as more of Charles Emerson Replichester.
-
. . . since my favourite episodes tend to be the ones where the danger is not a sentient being but rather some exotic animal, I still wonder if you could get away with doing more "Man vs. Nature" episodes.
Another option would be to introduce way more benign civilizations that use the stargates for peaceful diplomacy and trade.
You know, sort of like the United Federation of Planets. Hmm, maybe that's why they didn't set it up that way.
Regardless, with this set-up it's actually the humans who are the anomaly since they keep the stargate a secret from the rest of society. -
not sure i will this one from what i have seen so far. but time will tell.
-
yeah for ads!!
-
At least he won celebrity jungle turds.
-
About 2/3rds of SG1 and half of Atlantis were watchable. Actually, considerably better than TSCC and most of the sci-fi schlock on TV. Unfortunately, though, that remaining fraction was pretty awful at times.
-
does it always have to be the fucking tech guy making the fucking Star Wars references?
-
Tried to. Many times. Just couldn't.
-
Why on earth do Scifi series like this think they always need to have a "normal" person that has to get "hooked" into the universe?
"We need you... cause.... uhhh.... I dunno make up something... yeah yeah.,.. you have a special gene"
Seriously... is that even necessary?
( not to mention the Stargate writers forgetting their own established canon that the SG program is now public and has been for a few years even )
I'll probably still tune in, but this better go somewhere different plot/story depth wise. SG-A was actually freaking going somewhere for awhile until they paniced and brought in the old standby plot of the replicators. The should have killed off SG-1 after season 5 or 6 ( whenever they brought back daniel.. you could tell they wanted to end it then an d I really wish they had )
-
Actually Stargate usually makes references to Star Trek, not only with the characters acknowledging the series from time to time, but often in the writing as well. So I guess it's time for a few Star wars references, right? The irreverence that Jack O'neill had for everything techy/future/scifi was a great character component. Unfortunately the writers didn't know how to write anything as clever for new characters, so we got Mitchell, and Sheppard who were basically carbon copies of O'neill, and now we're going to get this guy... the "twist" will be that he's going to be the civillian character ( a'la Daniel )
llllllaaaaaammmmmeeee
-
was canceled right after they celebrated 200 episodes.
-
things must be explained.
The instructional info is really directed at viewers.
Audiences are stupid, according to network "thinking."
Captain to Rookie Helmsman: Turn on the warp drive . . . The warp drives allows the ship to go faster than light. You see, Rookie Helmsman, to travel interstellar distances, we need to go FTL . . . FTL means Faster Than Light . . . You see, Rookie Helmsman, the speed of light is the fastest . . . -
and I was expecting more of the same juvenile crap served up by the latter seasons of SG:A, like it was written by a bunch of virginal fanboys. I'm surprised. It *appears*, from what I'm seeing in the trailer, like it was written by adults for adults. SG:A started out so promising, but the writers forget that when plots get stale, it's the relationship between the characters that'll keep it going through slow stretches. But again, all the relationships in SG:A were shallow at best, and then when it looked like they delve a little deeper, they'd pull back or the results were disappointing. Hoping they hve a more mature writing team for this spinoff.
-
the problem with trek was b&b they did some excellent shows, but ultimately ran it to the ground, cannibalising previous episodes. i could watch enterprise and thought, right that bits from s9, that bits from voy and that sub plot is from tng. b&B ran it into the ground when they should have given up the reigns to someone else. a change is good. note how smallville ( its a guilty pleasure) had umpteen bad seasons ( s1 & 2 were the best) but when the show runners left, new blood was found and the show gathered momentum again
stargate sg1 was excellent, but they should have finished the series with 7, Atlantis had for the most part really good characters, but the chopping and changing of cast, the rehashed plots seemed like they were content to just coast along ( as was i by watching it and not playing attention)
i hope the showrunners have a new found enthusiasm and hope they bring in new blood. its all well and good giving it a darker bsg feel, but if it's still a turd, you can't polish it.
corin nemic was actually quite good in sg1, it's a pity they didnt get him back for this or atlantis -
I'll give it a few episodes and see what I think after that. I don't have much respect for the people behind the previous Stargate shows, but at least they seem to be a little more ambitious this time around.
-
like all the others did. Im sure this will appeal to people who also love 'furries' too

SG1 was one of the longest running science fiction shows of all time, Atlantis wasnt quite as good but had some great characters and decent stories, these people know what they're doing!!! Looks better than Avatar that is for sure!!!
