‘Ooo!! Mini-Sliders!!’ Hercules Partakes Of Monday’s Excellent Fifth Season Finale Of WEEDS!!

Published at:  Aug 31, 2009 3:38:12 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Weeds 5.13 FAQ

What’s it called?
“All About My Mom.”

Who’s responsible?
Teleplay is credited to series creator Jenji Kohan.

What says Showtime?
“Nancy learns of Esteban's fate and takes action to preserve her own. Andy makes a big change in his life. Dean, Doug and Celia find common ground. Silas helps Adelita with a disturbing medical issue.”

Is this also the series finale?
No. A sixth season of “Weeds” was greenlit for next summer long ago.

How does this 5.13 start?
Mexican kingmaker Pilar Zuazu sends over “Total Recall” heroine Rachel Ticontin to give Nancy a full body massage. “Good morning,” Ticotin's character greets what may be the future first lady of Mexico. “I will step outside so you can get undressed.”

Wait. What about the opening title? It always offers hints! Last year the finale credits had a gift basket like the one Nancy orders for Silas as she made the drive to her likely execution.
A dark-haired woman in an orange one-piece swimsuit dives into a fancy swimming pool. The “Weeds created by Jenji Kohan” text is the design at the pool’s bottom.

The big news?
Lots of big news this week. Let’s just say you won’t be seeing much of The General Lee from here on out.

What else is Showtime not telling us?
Adelita’s medical condition, surprisingly, is more serious than the clap and requires the help of Andy’s doctor-girlfriend Audra.

Is Adelita pregnant?
That would be telling.

Does Silas bone Adelita this week?
He does not.

Is 5.13 all sad like 4.13 was?
It’s not as moving, but features an absolutely terrific cliffhanger you’re not likely to see coming.

Tell us more of this season-ending cliffhanger!
There are actually three, two of which have already been given away by the Showtime promos. One involves Celia, in her quest to “out-Nancy Nancy,” putting together her “team,” comprised mostly of Botwin associates. The second involves the anti-abortion protester Gale holding Andy and Audra hostage with his crossbow, as if Andy and Audra were vampires. The big cliffhanger is not featured in the promos and, of course, involves Nancy.

What’s great?
Nancy. Andy. Audra. Esteban. Cesar. Ignacio the Perro Insano! “I hear everyone’s dying for John Mayer’s syphilis!” “That’s true.” “You’re killing me!!” “Ooo! Mini-sliders!” “Four if you count the balls separately.”

What’s not so great?
I grow restless with the broad and unconvincing Celia/Doug machinations. If Mexican drug lords were to fill the American members of Celia’s new team full of bullets at the start of season six I’m not certain how disappointed I’d find myself.

How does it end, spoiler-boy?
With reference to the Perro Insano’s naughty misdeeds.

10 p.m. Monday. Showtime.

And I don't throw that term around, but really. Nancy has to be one of the most selfish and unlikable characters ever put on tv. This show rocked when it was actually ABOUT FUCKING WEED in some capacity, and was a satire on suburban life, and was actually funny. Now its just Nancy being a slutty, selfish whore who constantly FEELS guilty for fucking up her kids and being a terible mother, but never actually does ANYTHING to change it or even really make any type of effort. Shane got fucking shot, people. He's like 15. This show is fucking garbage now. This is probably the last episode I will watch. It's just devolved into silly gimmicks and overt commentary on ridiculously stupid issues that have nothing to do with a show called WEEDS. Jenji Kohan fucked this show right up.

Exactly what I'm talking about. She's "in love" with an abusive, psychotic, bi-polar Mexican gangster. And all she can do is talk shit on her original husband because he DIED. Yeah, lets blame him for dying, totally his fault. What the fuck is wrong with this show lately? Esteban fucking raped her and has threatened to kill her. It'd be one thing if they made him likable and the audience liked him along with Nancy, but they haven't showed us one thing to make us like him, other than the fact that he is handsome. Is that all that matters to Nancy? Handsome with money? I repeat, shes a selfish slutty bitch and possibly the worst character on tv. I jus don't understand anything she does, and neither do any of the writers.

I agree with this a million percent. I've never seen a show go from so brilliant to so stupid so fast. The stupid writing of this just leads me to hate myself for continually giving it one more shot.

The first season was outstanding. A fantastic satire of the nonsense we put up with in society today. It was original and different.
Then it started taking a nose dive into hack sitcom crap like "this week Andy dresses up like a woman to get out of the Army! Man in dresses = FUNNY!"

Now the show no longer relies on smart writing but on shock and surprises. Characters don't do the things that make sense because they have to SHOCK rubes into going OOH WHO SAW THAT COMING??? We don't always need to be shocked and suprised by over the top cliff hangers, sometimes it'd just be nice to be shocked by a smartly written story line that doesn't force every single character to do something they'd never do in a million years just for a twist.

The fact that Hercules is so willing to go out of this way to rip the bad writing on Heroes yet gives something this stupid a pass is really mind boggling.

Nancy isn't quite the worst character on tv...

    by superxy

Because Celia claims that title. Celia has drug this show further and further into the gutter since they moved to the San Diego area. But, Nancy isn't much better. She has gone from a confident empowered woman that was making questionable/out-of-the-box choices for her family to a weak failure of a human being. What's worse, is that she knows ahead of time how bad her choices will be for her kids, but she doesn't care. She was likable, and now she is so bad that I can't even pity her. Last season was terible. This season was a little better. But, the show lost its greatness in the Agrestic fires.

my thoughts exactly. it's one thing to take the show in a new direction (nancy marries esteban, agrestic burns down and they move, etc) but it seems like i'm watching a completely different show than seasons 1-3. i liked tonight's episode, but it doesn't make up for the past season and a half. this is not the weeds i know and love.

They are definitely missed - Conrad & Helia. And you're right about seasons 1-3, esp. season 2. IMO, the strongest of all. Hopefully they wrap this shit up with a BANG. I'm almost at the point where I don't really care about Nancy. And, fuckin Celia's a whole new pain-in-the-ass. If it weren't for good ol' Andy, the show would really suck ass! BTW, can someone explain to me why Alanis was added to the cast - other than the addition of a "name"?

Absurd ending. We're supposed to believe that while Pilar and Nancy having a conversation about Pilar killing Shane and Silas, Shane walks over with a mallet in his hand with no reaction from Nancy, hits Pilar hard enough to kill her. Nancy would have seen him coming from 50 feet away, and told him to go back in the house, before she had any idea what he was about to do...Give me a break...

You all can suck a nicely rolled up dick-blunt!

    by nohomo

I come from a family that was wrapped up in the drug game and while no one in my family ended up getting fucked silly by the mayor of Tijuana, they totally ended up off the deep end for a while. So while all of you bitch and complain that this show is not realistic enough for you this season, my family pretty much ended up like silas, nancy, celia, and shane - fucked up in the head. So as I watched this season, I thought it was a great one that dealt hyper-realistically with the issues that can arise amongst a family of criminals. This is no longer some silly show about weed anymore, it's actually pretty great drama dealing with what can happen when someone comes up in the drug-game. Next season all of your cries for campy weed schtick will be quelled with the adventures of Celia's team, but Nancy will have huge fish to fry because who knows who will try to kill her, Esteban, or Shane next year. Shane saw his father die and he's had a history of going a little nutso, so it's pretty natural for his story line to be heading where its going. Silas' story line will come to some closure also. I'm having a feeling the deaf pregnant girl from season 1 might end up showing up next season. Andy was annoying to me this season. I'm sick of all of his complaining and shenanigans. Plus he owes Shane and Silas all of Juda's money. It's rightfully theirs. I hope they kill off Audra just to punish him for his stupidity. And speaking of stupidity, I'm thoroughly annoyed by Kevin Nealon already. His character is just absolutely pathetic and flaccid at this point. Will Conrad show up next season to help out Nancy deal with Guillermo? Maybe, it's possible. And I think it's great that we're actually seeing what a weak person Esteban really is. It's great commentary on the machismo stereotype in Latino culture. I don't think Nancy is selfish though. She is a mother who had to do what she had to do to make sure her boys were afforded a life that they were accustomed to, and along the way she became a little power-hungry with all of the attention. But she is a mother who lost contact with her sons like any other mother and it's difficult for her. So while you say she is selfish, her sons were near her every step of her way in the drug game. The last scene when they're standing there while that puta, Pilar, floated face-down in her pool of blood and beautiful spanish tile was a reminder that no matter what drama they encountered, they were still family. So I loved it. The only ONLY problem I have is discontinuity of the story with the reason Nancy ratted them all out in the first place - those girls who were trafficked into the US. I want to see Nancy stand up for them since that's what started this whole Mexican-mafia mess.

stop watching because your bitching is fucking annoying. That was the best ending they've had so far. Shane did what was appropriate considering the circumstances. Not only was he being protective of his family he just killed the person who was responsible for him getting shot. Doug and Andy are always funny. Silas has actually turned itno a rsponsible young adult. Shane is still [mostly] sharp as tack. Celia is just fun to hate and I like to watch her eat shit. Nancy's character has plenty of depth... most of you are just looking at her from one angle.

Don't get hung up thinking Nancy is a hero.

    by jack burton

She's not and never really was. She has much more in common with Detective Victor Samuel Mackey then your everyday hero; they are both sharks. Once I figured out the show doesn't think Nancy is a hero either I liked it more. This happened towards the end of Season 4. I thought Season 5 was on par with the excellent Season 4, but a bit more meandering. Still MLP had some incredible scenes, especially every time her and Andy were going head to head. Is "Weeds" still a comedy? Not really and it can definitely cut some fat. I love the Doug character but we really could lose him and Celia, and every else that has been periphery this year if they are not going to anything interesting with them. But Nancy Botwin is definitely one of the more complex characters on television. Everything you need to know about Nancy was symbolized perfectly by the baby. She used it to get out of trouble with Esteban, and has since basically forgotten about it when it no longer served a purpose.

Better than last season, but still a shadow of earlier self

    by _maltheus_

For some reason, when Pilar was threatening Nancy, I was thinking Shane would kill her and then bam, it happened. They've been leading him up to violence all season, so it was a nice touch. But of course, Nancy will have learned nothing from it, yet again. His fear for her is entirely the cause of his downward spiral.
This show lost it when they ditched Conrad and Helia. Does anyone even know why they did that? That was also around the time they turned Nancy into an amoral slut. I stopped caring about Doug once he lost his job. The corrupt politician angle was a good one. I've also stopped liking Andy this season. Silas is probably the only likable one left. But if he's suppose to be some kind of genius grower, why hasn't he grown more? Especially once he got licensed?
Oh well, it's still watchable, but all I can think after watching each ep is how fucked up Jenji Kohan must be. I know it's just fiction, but I gotta wonder just how much she has Nancy channeling her.

What kind of show is this?

    by growltiger

Every episode there is the whiplash between the drama that is Nancy Botwin and the "no lessons, no growth" adventures of her entourage.

I like Andy and Silas as they offer some kind of moral reckoning. But that says something when you look to Andy Botwin as your series' moral compass.

Kudos to Alexander Gould. He was chilling in that final scene. But same problem: now what do the writers do with him? Turn him into an enforcer? Make him a funny enforcer with ironical quippage and banter?

Well, I will say this much. I was ready to de-TiVo "Weeds" but the finale saved its place in my Season Pass manager. It slipped a few notches in position, but still it remains.

Decent Finale to a Weak Season

    by bswise

The finale definitely redeemed the show some, but it seemed like the only solid episode to the whole season. Kept tuning in, because it's still better than most shows. Hoping Nancy will regain her soul next season, it that's even possible at this point.
