‘What Are You Talking About??’ Sunday Brings This Summer’s Penultimate TRUE BLOOD!!

Published at:  Aug 30, 2009 1:48:09 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

I miss Godric.

This whole Mary Ann plotline seems caught in a rut. At least three times now her idiot minions caught up with Sam, and three times Sam screws around looking all scared until he decides to turn into an animal and escape with ease.

Hopefully things kick back into gear now that a Vampire Queen is on the case.

Tonight:
Episode #23: “Frenzy”
Debut: SUNDAY, AUG. 30 (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
With the crisis in Bon Temps careening out of control, Bill seeks out the advice of Sophie-Anne (Evan Rachel Wood), the Vampire Queen of Louisiana, but must exercise patience before she gives him critical information. Meanwhile, Sookie and Lafayette find that protecting Tara from herself is more difficult than they anticipated; a desperate Sam turns to an unlikely source for assistance; and Jessica tests Hoyt’s allegiance to Maxine. Written by Alan Ball; directed by Dan Minahan.

Next week brings Labor Day weekend, so HBO’s not going to waste a fresh episode on you. The season finale arrives in two weeks:

Episode #24: “Beyond Here Lies Nothin’”
Debut: SUNDAY, SEPT. 13 (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
Bon Temps reaches a fever pitch as Maryann prepares for her ultimate bestial sacrifice, conscripting Sookie to be Maid of Honor at the bloody nuptials. Meanwhile, Sophie-Anne warns Eric to keep the lid on Bill's inquisitiveness; Jason leads Andy into the heroic abyss; and Hoyt struggles with Maxine's endless stream of insults. Deliberating on what may be his final move to save Sookie and the town, Sam places his trust, and his life, in a most unlikely ally.

A god as a season-long “big bad” in a series about a superpowered young blonde and her vampire boyfriend! Where does Charlaine Harris get her ideas?

  • 2 episodes ago when Jessica and Hoyt were finding out she's a vampire virgin, Lafayette and LettieMay were rescuing a fucked up Tara, Marianne finally went completely insane, Sam and Andy joined forces and everyone in Bon Temps got perma-black eyeballs, every time the story shifted to Dallas to show Eric, Godric, Bill and Sookie holed up in some windowless Dallas hotel I was utterly bored and couldn't wait for the story to shift back to Bon Temps... When Godric died it was a saving grace. Because Sookie, Jason, and Bill's reaction to the shit going down in Bon Temps was the best part of the season for me. Its been a great season, better than the first, and you should definitely show it more respect. It is not and will never be Buffy, but its damn entertaining and one of the finest HBO's ever produced.

    True Blood vs Buffy

    by filmweasel

I personally enjoy True Blood better, mainly because they are not hitting you over the head with the whole metaphor about the problems of being a teen. I think that the creators of TB have realized that the best part of of the show are the supporting characters, and have given them all a lot to do this season. I find Sookie and Bill boring in comparison.

I watched Buffy and Angel and they were great but True Blood is great too and arguably better. I definitely love that True Blood seems nmore mature in comparison. Just looking at that Willow/Glory Fight scene makes me cringe a little (and again I'm a fan). Watching the new generation of shows: Lost, Fringe, Supernatural, Damages, True Blood etc. makes me realize how childish Buffy could be at times.

I don't know how much involvement Charlaine Harris has on the show, but the books are different from the television series. , The Buffy angle isn't really apparent outside the show. I am not saying she is original, but to say Charlaine is ripping off Buffy might be a stretch.

    Ripping off Buffy?

    by whodis

Both Whedon and Harris rip off Anne Rice. Bill = Louis , Godric = Armand, Jessica = Claudia, etc.... that tribunal scene in the first season for "killing your own kind" and one of the penalties could be being locked in a coffin for eternity.... the exchanging of blood to become a vampire.... shit, the whole idea of the P.OV. of vampires and not just some lurking monster for the heroes to go after. Still, TRUE BLOOD is a lot of fun, it's like Buffy for adults.

Harris's original (book) plot did not involve a 'god' - and this was not a major plotline. BALL amped up the maenad, added in a 'returning god' idea and the throngs of black-eyed followers, so blame *Ball*, not Harris. there is really nothing about Harris' books that's derivitive of Whendon's Buffy.

    by keysersoze

I loved Buffy and Angel (Angel moreso), but I just don't see any sort of comparison to Buffy. The main character is blonde, and it's about vampires. Comparison ends right there. Nothing else is even remotely similar.

That said, I will agree that while I have hated the Tara/Eggs/Maryann thing, I could not WAIT for Bill/Sookie/Jason to return to Bon Temps to find out all the shit that was going on. And last week, the trio of Jason, Andy and Sam was absolutely pitch perfect. I loved every second, and I am absolutely loving Jason finding his role as not quite a dumb lothario, not quite a bible thumping "soldier" but fitting somewhere in the middle as the heroic dope who loves banging. These last few episodes have made him my favorite character.

Harris never used the Maryann character as a big bad, actually, she is only mentioned in passing nor did she use the returning god idea. This was totally Ball's idea. I watched Buffy as a fan and enjoyed it as well as enjoying True Blood. Harris's books do not copy Buffy at all, they are completely different in idea and form than Buffy was.

    Maryann = Jasmine

    by fatsackowind

    Jasmine = Illyria = Glory = Cthulhu

But, seriously this Maryann plot line is very much like Jasmine on season 5 of Angel. Every time Michelle Forbes (who is amazing, I would have thought this part was written for her) sweeps towards the camera I keep expecting her to lift her arms and reveal cuts opening in her flesh and then immediately healing. Plus, all the orgy/removal-of-free-will stuff is in alignment with what Jasmine had going on. Still, fun season and good show.

That can, you know, actually act. And keep their accents. Or was there some big plot point in Angel about how Fred suddenly lost her "Texas" accent in two episodes. And thank CHRIST not every character on the show is a "saracastic and wity" fuckwad. Fuck off Joss Whedon. Maybe Herc would like the show if Bon Temps went from a small town to a major city with it's own fucking airport and college campus like Sunnydale did over 7 seasons.

    Buffy and Angel

    by fatsackowind

Are still leading the pack of the best written and developed television that exists.

There is no denying their strength in characterization, humor, genre-subversion, dramatic arcs, amazingly clear moments full of bucket-loads of intention, metaphor, uh, acting, writing... basically Buffy and Angel have it all and then some. Most television isn't nearly as spirited and entertaining but also incredibly thoughtful and intelligent. I found so much resonance on both Buffy and Angel and still go back and watch episodes over and over.

True Blood is a fun yarn but it does not have nearly as much going on as any one of Joss Whedon's television projects. Let's be serious.

You know, when I was a tiny lad I really enjoyed seeing Raquel Welch kick ass as a gunfighter trained by Robert Culp and armed by Christopher Lee in Hannie Caulder. Got pretty happy seeing Pam Grier give a Foxy Brown asskicking to the bad guys. Really enjoyed Diana Riggs' Emma Peel (and her leather jumpsuit) in the Avengers. Now that was back in the days of sonics and highscrapers, when if you saw a Claudia Jennings laying out bad guys you knew you weren't going to get another buttkicking heroine in the next thing you saw. So anyway, about twenty-five years later Joss Whedon made Buffy and all the AICN and Whedonite world acted like Joss Whedon had invented female cinematic/televisual empowerment. And it didn't bother me. Why? Because I liked Buffy, too. Herc, take a deep breath. Let it out slow. If you like True Blood, watch it. If you don't...don't. But everything builds on what came before. Let it go.

...we say Hallelujah. At its worst (season 5) the Wire was better than 90% of the shows ever aired. At its best (seasons 3&4) it lapped the field. But saying that Buffy was like a cartoon compared to, say, Lost is as much of an overstatement as saying Buffy and Angel are the best television that exists. For instance, I'd put seasons 2 and 3 of Buffy up against seasons 2 and 3 of Lost, in spite of Lost's infinitely better cast and production values. (And yes, I know those are the match-ups most favorable to Buffy).

...I like Lost. A lot. Liked Buffy a lot too. But if you say Seasons 2 and 3 of Lost or seasons 6 and 7 of Buffy are best absolutely ignored (at least after the musical in season 6) the fans of those shows react like antibodies. True Blood I don't like so much, at least so far, though I think season two has been a big improvement over season one. Except no Lizzy Caplan.

    Agree with you about...

    by oldnewbie

MaryAnn's idiot minions. The nadir was Jason pretending to be He Who Is To Come and them believing him. No, wait, earlier in the ep when he held a nail gun to Arlene's head and her leader of the idiots boyfriend backed down. If he was so zapped by MaryAnn he would not have given a rats ass about Arlene getting nailed! So that was the nadir. I tried to justify it by saying he is nuts when not possessed and so when he is he is rational; but then that doesn't explain any of his other MaryAnn influenced actions. So it was just plain stupid. Lazy writers. BTW, "Buffy" sucked in it's later seasons. It was great through season 3, but lost it when Buffy wnet to college. Oh sure, a good ep here and there, and season 5's "The Body" was indeed one of the shows finest (but it does not stand alone well... to appreciate it, you have to know who the characters are to each other, especially Anya). The singing ep was a novelty, period. As a scary thrilling show, it lost it all forever when Noxon took over for season 6 and drove whatever was left of the show into the ground (Buffy 'freaked' and ended up in a mental hospital when she first saw a vamp?? Uh, sure Marti... what a crock of shit)!

I will not waste my time defending any of the absolutely unwatchable season six of Buffy. However, you are completely wrong about why Buffy was in a mental hospital. She was in the hospital as much as Benjamin Sisko on DS9 was in the 20th Century. That's really the best way to explain it.

Wow, written by Alan Ball himself and directed by Daniel Minahan (who did "Nothing But the Blood" and "Sparks Fly Out")and that was hands down the worst episode of True Blood I have seen to date.
I hated the Queen's casting, didn't buy LaFayette's fear of guns, and didn't like any of the Maenad's minions bullshit. I have loved every episode up till now, and though I didn't hate the script, I hated the direction. Lost a lot of faith on that one. Not Heroes loss of faith level, but more like second half, season two of Twin Peaks loss of faith.

    True Blood

    by watch_the_world_burn

had an amazing resonance among my circle of friends. I downloaded the entire first season and watched it all within a couple of nights. At this point I was the only person to have even heard of True Blood. Showed it to a friend of mine, a week later EVERYBODY had seen it, readily addicted and awaiting season two. It was strange, I'm really the only sci-fi/fantasy fan out of the lot of them, could never get any of them (both sexes included) to go anywhere near Buffy/Angel/BSG etc. They only ever watch stuff like Weeds or HIMYM - weird that they were all so attracted to True Blood.

True Blood is wayyy Better than Buffy ever was or could be, It's Kind of Ridiculous that you would reference one of Buffy's weakest Seasons in hopes of supporting your claim that TB is Ripping off Buffy. Gloria was one of the dumbiest things about buffy and that Chick that played Gloria could'nt act to Save her life which is true of most of the Buffy Cast, which is Probably why none of the cast are working Cept for Willow and Angel and there both on Abortions disguised as Sitcoms, so i don't really count that as working. True Blood is so much better, than anything Joss Weadon has ever done and Probably will do, Your constant dick sucking of MR Weadon Makes me hate that Dude, True Blood Is Better, Get over it! Perhaps if HBO started sending you more swag you'd have nicer things to say, So yeah you SUCK!

    And speaking of Buffy

    by watch_the_world_burn

I've been going through my Buffy collection the last few weeks. Having only watched it sporadically on TV and parts of DVD sets, it was refreshing to sit down and watch a nice chunk of episodes consecutively.

Season 1 was actually quite good, I didn't think the show would've found its feet so fast, and having only half the length of a regular season kept the story arc tight. Season 2 was ok, but the Angelus thing seemed more childish than I remembered or at least compared to later episodes of Angel. Of course, it was still mired in teenage metaphors - "you sleep with a guy and he turns into a monster" - at that point. But it seemed obvious they were trying to show how evil he was supposed to be without killing off any important characters (nobody cared about the computing teacher!). The biggest kick I got from the earlier seasons was seeing minor characters being introduced (Cordelia, Spike, Johnathon etc.) and knowing the impact they would have on later seasons (both Buffy & Angel), it was a bit like being a soothsayer!

Season 3 was great, as most agree. Faith, of course. And the story arc with the Mayor was slow-burned to perfection. Season 4 I'm still downloading, but from what I remember it wasn't one of my favourites. Season 5 was ok, having a god as a villain was interesting, and they added enough twists and explanations to account for why Glory didn't just tear Sunnydale apart to look for the Key. Loved the dig at soap opera cliches by adding a new character without any explanation (or so we thought at first!).

I don't understand why seasons 6 & 7 are so derided by fans. Yes, the average laugh count per episode did drop (although a few episodes were laugh-out-loud funnier than any previous episodes) - but it also lost most of the childishness that held back the previous seasons (or at least when watching it now). And, at least to me, the story arcs seemed tighter, the writing a little bit sharper and more consistent. Most of my favourite episodes are in the last two seasons.

Don't really see the need to compare to True Blood, two very different types of shows who happen to share a supernatural theme.

This season has been one pretty big bore with the exception of the Hoyt/Jessica storyline.

The religious cult plot sucked and we never saw the cult wife naked. Boring. It also ended terribly, though the suicide bombing briefly brought some excitement, it was just kind of dropped as a subplot.

The less said about Ensign Ro's plot, the better, it's horribly boring and way past it's expiration date.

I'm not saying it is, but according to the UK TV industry (documentary on the "Best TV Ending's ever!"). If Whedon didn't do Buffy. We would never have shows which tells the Teens P.O.V, etc, etc.

So Buffy at the time was good in it's day, but compared to True Blood. I heard it's more Adult Vampire stories. Why compare at all?

It sounds like they may both tell Vampire stories, but they're aiming at different Demographics.

So Buffy is for Teens onwards, and True Blood is for Adults.

It does, however, scare me that it seems like they have so much to do in the next episode. I'd like to see the Maryann storyline resolved, but at this point I'm not so sure if that's possible. by red ned lynch

...the series is significantly different, though not always in ways that are worse than the books. Lafayette was the body in the car at the end of season one, for instance. The Maenad plot was extremely different, both in terms of motivations and how it played out. Godric was not Eric's maker and Godric wanted to die because he was tired of killing children (he fed off children exclusively in the books). The Queen of New Orleans was rather different, and it will be interesting to see how they fit her "special vampire power" (because in the books each vampire has a unique special vampire ability--sheesh) into the series, because it was empathy based and Rachel Evan Wood's queen, with her Dorothy Parker chic, doesn't seem a good match for that. Plenty of other things, too. On the whole I'm not going to say the series is better or worse than the books, but they are very different.

    Red Ned Lynch nice recap

    by xiphos_2

Doesn't the "special power" a vampire might manifest come with age? Pam and Bill being roughly contemporaries don't seem to have any other special powers beyond being badasses in the book. While Eric, Sophie and some others discussed can do things like fly or tie thier children to them forever. One of the complaints I have with the TV version of TB is how they have sort of shafted Pam so far and made her into a bitchy lazy asshole.I'm hoping they bring Amelia into the story then we can get some hot lezbo action with her and Pam.

...as far as I know neither Bill nor Pam have special powers, so either it's a thing that reveals itself with age or I overstated when I said they all had one. And yeah, the Pam thing is unfortunate, because she is a much better character in the books. She should be young and fresh-faced, which would make her attitudes about things much more fun. On the other hand, Tara is barely in the books and is pretty much a completely different character than on the show. For me, anyway, it's a mixed bag on the changes they've made.

    Buffy versus True Blood

    by thewizardofoz

Buffy's effects don't hold up so if you're just watching a clip, especially an effects driven one, you're not going to understand why we love it. I"m really enjoying True Blood but I will admit, I do often get deja vu watching it particularily the Sookie/Bill/Eric triangle which is VERY similar to the Buffy/Angel/Spike triangle. Give credit where credit is due. True Blood is a fun, gothic romp. Buffy was a much deeper, darker inspection on what it means to be a leader.

Left_Hand_Path: Yeah last night ep did leave me wondering what was wrong with the elements of the show. Was it badly written, badly directed, just plain boring?? The Queen did nothing for me; just another self involved vampire keeping itself amused after too many lifetimes. Hopefully the finale will be more watchable. clupula: I recall the Sisko episodes of DS9 but honestly cannot recall how it ended up. Was he nuts or was he having wormhole inspired dreams. Far as I can tell he was the commander of the station in 'real life' and not a patient in a mental hospital. Buffy's revelation to Willow threw out tons of previously established storyline canon from the movie on through the flashbacks where Angel saw her before she moved to Sunnydale. No visits to the loony bin were mentioned or shown.

    CCon99: "Dracula" the novel

    by oldnewbie

There was no love triangle in the book. Dracula came to England solely to find new blood. That he happened to bite and start to turn Mina Harker was unrelated to her husband having been the real estate agent. I've read the novel a dozen times in my life and never picked up on that being anything but a story device to keep the characters centralized. The romance came later in the movies; especially Coppola's wrongly named "Bram Stoker's Dracula". More like "Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula".

    No comparison

    by superxy

You can't compare Buffy to True Blood. Maybe Buffy wasn't your style, but it was a very intelligently written show. It was a show where there was no throw away dialogue. Someone is going to say something about the campiness of some of the dialogue, but that goes back to my first comment about it not being your style. True Blood is an entertaining show. But it is not great television. Ball did great TV with Six Feet Under, and he started to do it with the first season of True Blood. It seems like he sacrificed a lot of intelligence to make the second season more attractive to a larger audience. The metaphors of the first season were strong, but this season has no metaphor. It's all about blood and sex. And, frankly, for most of America that's enough to make a huge hit. If Ball had kept it as smart as the first season it would have been a great show. As it is, it's very entertaining, but it won't stand any kind of test of time because it has basically devolved into an acceptable form of main stream pornography.

    by superxy

You can't compare them simply because they might have vampires, but they are no way the same genre of television. True Blood is a shock the audience premium cable show about sex and blood and fun, and Buffy was intended to be a show about teenage life that happened to have vampires. They are nothing alike, despite Herc's attempts to connect them.

    Tired of Maryanne Too

    by _maltheus_

While this has been a much better season than the first, it's been flagging a bit since Godric died (that was a waste). The Maryanne plotline was good at first, but it dragged out way too long. Jason, while never the rocket scientist, seems to have been hit even harder by the stupid stick this season. So much for acknowledging his stupidity and trying to not be so impulsive (that lasted all of three seconds). I don't know, I suppose as I'm starting to like the show more, I'm getting more critical of it too.
As for Buffy, if you're complaining about the metaphors, then you never got the show. EVERYTHING about the show was steeped in metaphor. That was the point. It was also easily the best action show and (live action) comedy on TV. It seems to have become fashionable to hate on it now (kind of reminds me of B5 in that way), but it had very few detractors at the time. Although they're not really comparable, I'd definitely put the second season of Buffy over the second season of TB. The story was far richer. TB is still a bit anemic for me, but I'm looking forward to the next season.

. . .but its gotten kind of crappy since they left Dallas. Speaking of which, since they killed off Godric, I think it would have been cool if they'd made him a little kid, like 10 years old or something. Here's hoping the MaryAnne story is wrapped up in TWO (WTF?) weeks. Two weeks and they can't even give us a 2 hour finale or something. Better be good. Didn't care for E.R.Wood's performance. Boring. And could they be wasting Jessica any more? She's funny and smokin' hot. They also need to tone down the Jason humor. 90% of it falls flat.

Comparing Buffy and True Blood is...

    by ninja nerd

...a waste of effort. Same genre, but vastly different shows. Seasons 1 & 2 of Buffy were fairly weak. Go back and watch and then consider TB is at the end of Season 2 with a much shorter number of episodes. Assuming a Season 3 and 4 for TB, I think the show will be pretty decent. Right now, it's a little uneven, but entertaining and shows potential. All that said, I liked Angel a lot more than Buffy. The last episode was one of the best things I've EVER seen on broadcast TV, period.

    by crow3711

Everyone on this show, besides Jason Stackhouse and Eric, are some of the worst actors working on television. Anna Paquin is about as convincing as a wooden shoe. Bill used to be cool, but now hes just a cheesy soap opera acting bitch. LaFayette is also pretty cool I guess, but everyone else sucks. My girlfriend doesnt watch the show, but I put on like ten minutes, and she was literally laughing at everyone on screen, Evan Rachel Wood the most. She was fucking terrible.
