From next Monday’s Variety:
It's undetermined how the network will release the final shows, though most likely in two different seasons of 10 and nine episodes, or vice versa.

But it couldn't last forever.
-
until they started a "dick measuring contest" on an earlier episode. Then I changed the channel.
-
Will be sad to see it go
-
Cool. I enjoy the show, but sometimes its good to bow out before it gets played out. The only question remaining is in what manner Tommy will die...on a booze fuelled bender or, as he would want it, having a burning building collapse on top of him.
-
I think its safe to assume you have a vagina.
There's a channel made just for you...Lifetime, look into it. -
but it seems like the stakes aren't as high now, although something big will happen on the finale i'm sure
-
But it has gotten a little over the top in recent seasons. There is such thing as too much gadgetry... I hope they find a compelling way to bring it to a close.
-
I'd just rather not watch a show about dude's measuring their dicks. That and the fact that the storylines went no where and the ghost arcs never amounted to anything.
-
'The Job' was a good show.
-
he could've played the role of Dignam in 'The Departed' instead he opted this show. Ashame, really.
-
the characters had their funny moments, but for the most part they were obnoxious. How can I care?
-
Rescue Me isn't half bad, but it's no Shield.
-
I heard it's better than 'The Sopranos.'
-
...but went downhill fast and hard. Ordering an extended season this year was a HUGE mistake. Despite moments of greatness from John Scurti (the argument with Tommy), Callie Thorne's interview with the french chick, Pasquale's post surgery sedated song and dance numbers, Ferrara laying down the law, Fox's awesome guest spot, the Gavin's dinner at the bed and breakfast, and that unbelievable conversation between Tommy and the ghosts at the bar, the show, despite looking like it would rival season two (the show's best) quickly sunk to season four depths (the show's worst). The awkward return of Candy (this signaled the shark jump), Tommy's horrible and quickly dropped self mutilation storyline, Mike becoming an unlikable prick, the whole Franco lesbian thing, Mickey's character being butchered (FUCK THAT SHIT), Them axing a character nobody gave a shit about thinking it would make an impact, the show moving even further into Sex and the City territory (I cannot stress how much this sucks) but only dragging these bits out for way too long, and most importantly, Leary's fucking ego turning a once believable character (hell, it's not just Tommy) into piss poor shadows of what they once were. Thank god Jack McGee got out when he did. Also, way too go in wasting Hesh! Jackasses. Oh, and Lorenz Tate was an awful edition to the cast, as seen in this past weeks....and arguably WORST episode the show's seen since the final episodes of season three. Oh, and great job ruining a cliffhanger ending with Tommy trying to rescue Damien with previews for the next episode, assholes. Thank god this show's days are numbered. I just hope the remaining eps can turn things around and end on a good note, but at this point, I'm skeptical. It's a shame too, this show has an amazing cast, and can be a great show....when it wants to be.
-
It's got a ways to go before it reaches Sopranos levels.....but season one ended on an extremely high note. Can't wait for season two in a few weeks.
-
and the ending baffled me for the longest time (I try not to think about it). But, nothing on television has ever surpassed season 3 episode 'Pine Barrens.'
-
but I've read fans saying that the show has been off. And it's ratings plummeted over the past season. So I guess it's up in the air.
-
Season 4: someone dies = the only drama you will find. The less said of it the better.
If season 3 was it, it would have been a revolutionary series that did nothing but quality and ended on a note higher than most other TV can even imagine.
Season 4 buried it the series so far underneath a pile of dung that well... Season 5 hardly acknowledges any of it (except for the guys that died).
Season 5 has started strong and kept the quality pretty balanaced. But seasons 1,2, & 3... there's nothing better.
-
Its picked it up in the past 3-5 episodes. But real week start. A two year break was not a good thing. I'd rather see the show go out still good.
-
Its been coasting on fumes for awhile now.
-
Jesus.
-
Loved the show the first couple of seasons, but now I'm following it just to see how it wraps up.
*SPOILER*
This week's show was great with taking the con girl's money -- the most excellent jaw-drop of the season, by far.
But outside of that, the plots are getting repetitive, and when that happens there's a chance the writers will get desperate and venture into jump-the-shark territory. Better to pull a "Lost" and set a definite end date for everyone to aim for. -
Tommy and estranged wife and daughter and small baby that might not be his will be set to gather at a local restaurant. Tommy will get there first and start Springsteen's "The Rising" playing on the juke box. The wife and baby will show up next. His ghost boy will be sitting in the booth while Tommy orders onion rings and vodka for the table. His daughter has trouble parallel parking. She runs in, cut to black. Brilliant.
-
The 'Bathroom' episode is easily one of the best eps of any TV comedy EVER.
-
The "dick measuring" episode was like the 3rd episode in the series and never mentioned again. Plus it was done in a comedic fashion, not some serious plot line. Just guys joking around.
In the slight chance you do have a dick, I think there's zero doubt it's small. Insecure maybe??? I think so.
It's a great show, and there's nothing "supernatural" about it. So Tommy imagines his dead cousin on occasion, usually WHILE DRINKING. Hell the past two seasons he barely shows up. -
It can usually be found cumming into your mom's mouth.

Explain why Tommy was chatting with the Virgin Mary?...
by cheyne_stoking_dms
Fuckface.
-
This is the BEST SHOW ON TV!!!!!!! I appreciate what they intend to do, but this series could go on for a really long time and still remain hysterically funny, wonderfully poignant, and totally brutal. Fuck the haters.
-
The only reason the viewership declined is because we had to wait almost two freakin' years for new episodes. Still, it was worth the wait. As for how the show ends, I would have to believe it has to end with Tommy dying. The whole series has been about his self destruction. Also, he didn't talk to the Virgin Mary he talked to Mary Magdaline (sp)in season 2 when he was talking to Jesus as well.
-
You obviously haven't been watching this season then.

by shermdawg
I raised a stink here when they stupidly killed off Johnny instead of having him get paralyzed and wheelchair bound, he gets caught up in the Tommy-Janet love triangle and paternity secret, as well as a deep depression. (THAT would've been so much better than the awful Sheila going psychotic deal, which ended up as the worst storyline the show has attempted.) Few seasons later, what do they do? Stick Janet with a paralyzed Michael J. Fox. Which was great, but I don't know if the nutgrab made up for it.
-
...especially with what goes down with Franco and Lou. So much better than season five's cheese doodle scenario.

I never really had a problem with the "dick measuring"....
by cheyne_stoking_dms
I just thought it was kinda stupid. I know a firefighter who is actually offended at the character of Sean Garrity.
-
When he's on the scene, he's got his shit together...usually. Not unless it's this season's insurance angle that offended your friend...
-
Tatum O'Neal can't act. Don't care if her Oscar says otherwise.
-
Did you appreciate how awful that rooftop scene between "Black Sean" and Tommy was this past week?
-
And that's make Maura Tierney unbelievably smokin' hot as the chick Tom's probably gonna end up with, since he can't pick either Sheila or Janet. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Callie Thorne. I really do, but I never caught this chick on ER, and....wowzers.
-

Idk I had the conversation with him awhile back...
by cheyne_stoking_dms
I just remember him saying Garrity depicts this image that any pretty boy idiot can be a firefighter. Hah the man was actually pretty steamed about it but whatever. Other than that I think he does watch it.
-
I pretty much agree with everything you wrote about the problems facing the second half of this season, especially with what they've done with Mickey's character. The end of the last episode had me shaking my head as soon as you saw Ellie in the car and the music kicked in. All I could think was "Great, ANOTHER person is about to die and we'll have to deal with drinking issues... again." I also have a huge issue with how random the second half of the season felt, as you said plotlines would start and then just be abandoned - for instance Mikey punching Tommy and calling him a drunk... and then drinking with him and laughing in last week's episode. It's all over the place.
Huge mistake extending the season.
Having said all that, I love the show and it's definitely still worth watching for Lou and Sean's brilliance, but I'm glad next season is the last... it's time to end it. -
Does he understand the concept of comic relief?
Dick measuring a problem?
What do you think happens when a bunch of men get together for extended periods of times... its the the crazy sophomoric locker room mentality that guys usually tend to go into when in a pack, ever play sports?
Supernatural?
Have you never talked to god while drunk off your ass?
Man, i once had a 3 hour conversation with a wall heater. I only know this because everyone else told me about it the next day. How i was not just talking, but actually pausing and intently listening as i seemingly waited for the water heater to finish talking.
Its called being drunk off your ass.
You should try it, may do you some good.
Helps unlodge sticks permanently stuck up the ass.
-
was dicked by ABC.After last season, I knew they were asking for trouble when they ordered so many new episodes when the well was running dry already. But I do think that this season is still better if only because they've given the house and the crew more screen time.I'll easily digest the last 19, even if Tommy still emits the AXE pheromone that inexplicably draws so many MILFs his way.
-
This season has been one of Rescue Me's best. Although I can't for the life of me say where it's going, this season's message of regret and consequence has been awesome. Not to mention the fact that Tommy Gavin may well be one of the most watchable trainwrecks I've ever seen. We'll miss ya Gavin!
-
This is the show I look forward to the most whenever it's on. Whenever it ends I always am left wanting more. It started a little heavy with the 9/11 storylines but that was fine. Now it doesn't seem to play anything more than a small part in whatever is going on. There seems like a lot of time to reconsider before the tenth anniversary. Acknowledge it and move on but don't quit. It'll suck to live in a world where we need three CSI's and two NCIS's but there's not enough 18-49 year old eyes on Rescue Me to keep it on the air.
-
The first ep was the perfect balance of funny/fucked up. But, then sagged in a quick fast hurry.Occasionally, it got it's shit together ("Shelia" was a gut-punch of an ep that bummed me out for a couple days afterwards), but it became really obvious that Leary and Tolan didn't have a map, and were just killing a lot of time in order to fill their double episode quota. So, I'm hoping Leary and Tolan take a cue from their own show. In a nutshell, it's a show about ruin and redemption. They've taken it to the point of ruin, now use this last lap to redeem. All the pieces are on the board, now FORM A PLAN and move them accordingly.
-
Is that The Shield and Rescue Me, and even Nip/Tuck are shafted when it comes to releasing the shows on Blu Ray.
We got 1 season of Rescue Me and Nip/Tuck on Blu Ray, and that was it. Then they went back to strictly DVD. THAT is what pisses me off. -
I envision him saving his nephew then being engulfed in a wall of flame. Lou's voice running over the ending credits saying " Tommy? Tommy? Talk to me Tommy! Jesus christ Gavin you better answer me!"
-
Other brother cop appeared one season as did deaf sister. What the fuck happened to them?
-
Gotta agree with Sherm. First 10 were much better than the 2nd ten. I must say that last weeks episode with Tommy and Maura Tierney on the couch. One second you are smiling and the next feeling some serious pain. Very well written. Don't care about the ratings though.
-
hell it was beyond great - then Tommy started having stigmata, Jerry got killed off with little fanfare, storylines started being recycled, old storylines that viewer had become invested in were abruptly dropped, oh yeah and Tommy's brother got killed off (wtf!) etc. etc. Its really too bad...
-
Aug 29, 2009 10:45:31 AM CDT
Don't even get me started on how quickly they forgot Jerry.
by shermdawg
He was the BEST character on the show, and deserved much more respect than a halfassed speech from Tommy and then a mishap with the ashes. You gotta wonder if there was friction with Jack and the rest of the crew behind the scenes.
-
Its heart warming to see that others EVEN remember the Job let alone profess love for it. Excuse me I'm tearing up just a bit, anybody have a tissue?
-
Remember a few years back when you couldn't have a Rescue Me talkback without it turning into a giant Hicks vs. Leary debate? Well, the Bacon bit he had with Sheila this season left me wondering if he lifted some of Gaffigan's act. Jim had a new comedy special a few months back on Comedy Central (don't know when it was taped) and he did this ode to bacon, which...as always...was great, but come the next week, Leary's on Letterman promoting Rescue Me, and he does one of his own. Most of the jokes wind up in a episode later in the season (don't know when this was taped, either), and while they're not dead on ripoffs of Jim's material, they came around so close to the special, ya gotta wonder. I mean, it's not like standup is filled to the brim with bacon humor.
-
I've been watching the show since season 1 but I was never quite as into it as many others were. It could kind of take it or leave it. But the show had some very great television moments throughout it's run. And I have to admit, I didn't think they'd pull off a longer season. But this season has been the show's best. Leary definitely deserves an Emmy nomination for the lengthy ghost bar scene alone, plus numerous other great moments this season. They could have easily made Tommy's return to drinking feel stale at this point but somehow made it work in a big way. Also, I like how the characters have matured as well as about the increased number of actual calls their house answered, how Black Sean was fully incorporated into the group and Damien seamlessly replaced him as the new rookie, etc. Great work all around.
-
...to stacking up with season two. No way. No how.
-
You don't have a dick. Remember what I said, go watch Lifetime you pussy. The programming is a lot more conservative. Nothing on there to remind you that you're hung like a 3 year old. BURN!!! I just put you in your place bitch.
Rescue Me FTW! -
crap acting, unlikable characters, purile plots, the fact that some people compared this to the sopranos is beyond me!
-
That guy had the worst shitcom ever on HBO. If Leary stole one quality bit from the guy it would be the only quality bit the guy ever had. Now having said that, I am very annoyed that FX is giving the show the axe because ratings are down. No shit the ratings would be down after coming back from 18 months. FX is never going to equal HBO or Showtime if they keep killing off their big shows.
-
It seems to me this show has suffered a split personality problem the last few years. When it stays in the firehouse with Lou, Sean, Mike and Franco, it's one of the funniest shows on TV. When it delves into Tommy's personal relationships, it drags - badly. The scene two weeks ago wth everyone wanting to see the orange dick was great, funny stuff. The following week was all Janet, who I personally just wish would throw herself on the third rail. Sheila on the other hand is terrific - funny, sexy as hell, as is Maura T. Eh, 20 more episodes will be about right. Sons of Anarchy isn't quite up to Shield standards, but still a helluva lot better than what the big three offer up.
Oh, and The Job rocked. -
I've been with this show since day 1, but this season has seemed like a weird spin off show where the boys retire from fighting fires and open a bar, which they are always at. Seriously, why does half the season take place at that bar? The firehouse works just fine.
I hope for the final 20, Leary, Tolan, and Evan sit down and watch the first three seasons again to get back in touch with what worked about the show in the first place.
This season hasn't been as bad as four, but that's not saying much. -
It's an ego trip for Leary - all these beautiful women want to fuck him. They can't have one good looking chick on the show without him banging her.
On an unrelated note I get a complete hard on anytime Callie Thorne is on the tube, -
This season has been good...WAY better than season 4...but definitely nowhere near as good as seasons 1 & 2. However, I LOVE the addition of Damien to the crew. That kid is fucking hilarious.
Plus I just saw Adventureland last night, and Damien was in it! -
What are you 15? Fucking loser. Keep watching your precious tv and I'll be sure to greet you at Wal-Mart the next time I see you.
-
yeah you must be a little kiddy. Enjoying all the foul language and dick jokes that AICN has to offer? Now who's hung like a 3-year-old?
-
that Tommy has had conversations with Mary Magdalene and Jesus Christ. While earlier claiming that there's no supernatural element to the show. You can't back that up cause you're a fucking moron. Burn!
-
I have loved this show through its strong seasons and not so strong, it was appointment television. But a couple of weeks ago I just stopped caring. I don't know if the storylines got too splintered (was the introduction of the cancer ward children just an excuse for the kid to drive off with the rig? Yes, Tommy had a little heart-to-heart with the one boy, giving some Hallmark style advice, but has anything become of that storyline?), or I'm tiring of Leary as the lovable asshole screwing his ex AND his co-workers widow. The season peaked with Michael J Fox's character as far as I'm concerned, and he got out just in time.
-
5 minute dream sequence regarding tommy dying in a fire or fucking Shiela or Janet. Cue Intro. Cue 5 minutes of commercials. Cue show, 30 second amusing antics regarding nothing to do with the plot of the show but taken from last falls mini episodes. Cue ten minute slow motion sex scene in which shiela or janet make tommy look like an idiot for staying with them. Cue 5 minutes of commercial. Cue ten minutes of interesting plot point, usually having something to do with Seans penis or Black Seans fucking Tommys daughter. Cut to 5 minutes of commercial. Cue 10 minute sexual build up made to stroke Leary's ego. Cue commercials....cue scenes from next week.....repeat.
I love this show, but season 5 has been weak filler at best. -
what I wrote earlier? Leary could've played Dignam. In the role, he would've blew Walhberg out of the water.
-
is better than some of the "best" of other shows on today. I will really miss this show. Wonder if Leary would've been oscar-nominated for The Departed.
-
... Leary would not have blown Wahlberg out of the water. Wahlberg was perfect for what the role required. Imagining Leary in that role makes me want to cry.
-
... was also considered, and he would have done well in the role.
-
Along with 30 Rock the two funniest shows on television. How am I going to fill my Andrea Roth fix?
-
I just think Leary would've been better.
-
And when I tuned it in for a few minutes, it was always some jackasses braying in front of the camera.
-
Uh, ending every episode with a montage set to some lame alt-rock garbage. The endless array of hockey sequences which seem to have no other point but to show Tommy scoring like 15 points (now that was Leary's ego on display). My point is, the show has always been wildly uneven, but for every moment that landed with a thud, there would be one that was great. However, it seems that lately the show hasn't really had any terrible or great moments, and has been content to just coast down the middle making no real narrative decisions at all. For such a "male" orientated show, it sure has been lacking balls.
-
I never watched the show, but I can't recall this site ever devoting a column to it. Why care now?
-
Brilliant cast. The show had it's flaws but over all it was amazing. Leary s metrosexual style always rang false for the tough guy image. Sober Tommy was never a good idea. Drunk Mickey was never a good idea. Lou=one of the best characters on modern TV. You really only needed to tune in for the 10 minute "roundtable discussions" that occued in almost every show. Worth it every week. I loved the ballpark scene at the end of season 4. They should have saved that for the series finale. Loved this series. Sons of Anarchy is shaping up to be awesome as well. R.I.P. Gavin
-
Holy Jesus... never make a comment on a thread when you are blazed. Lesson learned.
-
And yes, the show has recieved several stories over the years in Coaxial.
-
There have been hits and misses. All in all, I have enjoyed the show.
-
I like the idea of Dennis Leary being unemployed, but he'll probably just start doing "comedy" again.
-
there are so many moments of greatness. Some people may be sick of it, but I think the show has always been best when it dealt with all the various 9/11 themes. But yeah, plot lines and characters get dropped with no warning. Whatever happened to the French chick? or Franco's daughter? I hope they keep Maura Tierney around and don't drop her for no reason. I love her character and the idea that she might actually be an equal partner for Tommy is really, really tantalizing. The scene where she tells him to get out and he sits down and holds her hand instead was fantastic.
-
I've had a few days to think about this now and I've got the ending that's going to happen - mark my words. The last few episodes will be a clusterfuck of troubles for Tommy Gavin. His wife and kids are out of his life seemingly for good. The rest of his family are a mess because of his own return to drinking this season. Situations arise among the firefighters where Tommy is looked at as a huge liablity instead of any sort of an asset. The last commercial break runs. When it comes back on we see Tommy alone at the bar in the dark. He keeps seeing the ghosts of his lost loved ones but this time they just watch him instead of conversing. The emotions of a defeated man play out on his face. Suddenly the camera zooms in tight on one eye. We see a montage of Tommy in the future. Getting his drinking under control. Moving back in and living happily with his wife. Christmas time with the kids and grandkids. Chief Gavin on the nameplate on the door at the firehouse. A bunch of young bucks looking up to him. His own crew of peers being shown sitting around his living room watching football twenty-five years in the future. Laughing at the times they had together. The camera pulls back out and we see Tommy Gavin looking ten years younger than he does now. He's in his firefighter's uniform. He starts to run towards the camera and we here a rumble as one of the towers starts to fall on 9/11. Panic is all around and we realize that the whole series was what would have happened if Tommy had lived through the attacks.
-
They'll probably pull a M.Night on us.
-
Yeah, I liked the endings of Six Feet Under and The Sixth Sense, too. Just don't think they belong together.
-
That Janet/Sheila fight was amateurish as all hell.
-
Good description.
-
Will Leary hog them?
-
...they had actually gave Teddy more time this season.
