Seriously, does every show on the planet have to pull this "romantic rival" crap all the time now? Can we just once have a fucking break from the Ross & Rachel horsecrap? It's what drives audiences away from these shows, especially when the shows keep going back to that well over and over and fucking OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN!!!

    The smaller characters-

    by nairb the movie

Like the Jeffster, while funny, give the show too disjointed a tone. The antics at the Buy More, i.e. cage matches, are so stupid, and "zany" that is doesn't mesh well with the rest of the show. They should rid the show of any of those The Office-lite subplots, and concentrate on building the mythology of the show and it's aparently vast network of spies. They are also missing out on the Chuck/Morgan friendship by keeping Morgan as nothing more than a 2-dimensional plot device. There is so much right, but so much that could be fixed.

    by felwithe

I love nearly every character on the show, but I could never stand Bryce, or the plots that were based around him. They're the only low points in the show's history, IMHO.

And we've already done the "Chuck is a nerd, how will he compete with this sexy buff guy who wants Sarah?". If they do it I hope they at least do something new with it.

    JT Kirk - romantic triangles

    by yomomma

I'm with you on this. Sure, it is a common device in many comedies, but so are laugh tracks. This never-ending sexual tension was all cutting edge in moonlighting 25 years ago, but it's time for a change, espescially in this show which has already had months of the two of them professing their love and then taking it back.
I'm so sick of the constant sexual tension that they feel the need to stretch out for years on these shows, just be original and go somewhere else with the characters. Have Chuck fuck her, and then have her decide he's not all that after all or something, just end the constant pining and stolen glances before I fucking sick up all over my HDTV.

I don't feel sorry for Routh...

    by mcvamp

But with the benefit of hindsight, I can freely admit that while (overly) epic in scope and (overly) respectful to the legend, SUPERMAN RETURNS was a snoozer. It wasn't Routh's fault. You can't expect a young guy cast for his looks to act like another actor who's acting like a guy acting like a DIFFERENT guy. If Singer wanted to use the backstory of the Reeve movies, fine. But he didn't have to make Routh a Reeve clone. Amazingly enough, the LOIS & CLARK S1 I picked up for 3 bucks at Big Lots reveals something I'd forgotten--Dean Cain's Clark Kent may have been the best since George Reeves. Clark could be awkward, but wasn't pretending to be a total dipshit. Cain's Kent was confident, didn't bury the fact that he had some worldly knowledge, and even had some bitches on his SuperJock. Did it make the secret identity less plausible? Sure, but if you accept that a dude can fly and juggle cars just because he was born under a red sun, the glasses shouldn't be an issue. Anyway, good to see Routh get some exposure; hopefully he gets to actually ACT.

This shit is always in shows geared towards women. They just LOOVE having the hunky dangerous asshole and the slightly less hunky overly-sensitive pussy competing for them. It's like UFC for chicks. Just look at True Blood's first season. Chuck has already done it to death over 2 seasons (the british James-Bond superspy and Bryce have both had love triangle storylines), more is just unneeded pandering to the ovaries in the audience. Grow up girls, men are more than just playthings!

    by drath

Can't they just bring back Brice? He's already come back from the dead once. I guess the conflict was kind of forced though since he was actually a nice guy in the end so it ya knew he'd let Chuck get the girl if it came down to it. I just figured he'd go all Angellus at some point and Chuch would be fighting his friend who isn't himself for some reason.

    Not surprising...

    by mr. murdoch

It's all going pretty much how I expected for Routh. While I don't really have any investment for or against him (to me, he's just kind of..."there"), it's pretty pathetic that he has taken the brunt of a career backlash from "Superdude Reiterates", while Singer gets to "fail upward", as so many more powerful people in Hollywood do. Three years after the movie and Routh has a couple of leads in indie productions (most direct-to-video, or "in limbo"), a scattering of cameos, and TV guest spots. Perhaps he had bigger offers, as he once claimed, and didn't choose them (though I kind of find that hard to believe)? I really think it's simply due to the fact that the guy is just...bland. Singer, however, gets Uni to commit to a big budget Galactica, Warners to commit to buying out all additional rights to remake Excalibur, and various TV producing deals, including a miniseries, despite leaving millions of dollars worth of footage on the cutting room floor during Superman. Never seen 'Chuck', and Routh appearing surely doesn't attract me any further...but I'm almost more apt to *actively avoid* most future Singer projects, because of his creative choices thus-far. No, I don't really "feel bad" for Routh, either -- this is just the way the industry works in Hollywood. Welling actually is the *lucky* one -- he's set for life with salary he's been getting on 'Smallville' (a role that Routh indeed tried out for), and the show (in this critic's opinion) will far outlast Singer's debacle in cultural and monetary relevance.

PowerRing, DC already confirmed it WILL be Routh again (sort of)

    by big dumb ape

Not too long ago one of the DC execs -- while giving an interview about all sorts of things -- happened to mention that Routh had literally just been up in their offices only a few days before. And he noted that the whole reason WHY Routh was visiting the Warner and DC offices was to discuss story concepts for the next movie and work out a possible production scheduling timeline. So, the interview seemed to make it pretty clear that Warners and DC don't blame Routh for any of SUPERMAN RETURNS problems, and they are already making plans for him to reprise the role in the sequel...

    Great more triangles

    by ghostraider2008

Didn't the producers/writers learn anything from the ratings fiasco last year. They almost killed the show with their major triangle arcs involveing Sarah/Cole and Chuck/Jill last year. I mean the ratings tanked after Chuck slept with Jill last year and didn't recover to the former standings until Cole came onto the scene in I think Chuck vs. the Beefcake. And then in only two episodes with the Cole/Sarah thing the show then tanked to an absolute series low with a 5.8 in the ratings and that was when then show was going up against reruns on the other networks I believe. The shows ratings only minimally improved up until the series finale after that. I know triangles and angst work for some shows but it is more than apparent that they don't for this one and it is also apparent that triangles and soap opera relationship angst are really the only thing that Josh Schwartz knows how to right about. For that reason alone I hate to say it but the low ratings almost killed the show last year and if the audience reacts to this extended "quadrangle" relationship angst the producers have been stupidly trying to hype up like it is a good thing then this show and these next 13 episodes are probably going to be it last no matter how acclaimed and loved it is by the critics. It took a miracle save by Subway and a major fan campaign to get the show saved and renewed last season. I don't think the show is going to get another miracle like that again especially if the producers and writers feed the fans the same thing again that pissed them off majorly last year and drove many away.

    Razorback

    by ghostraider2008

First of Beefcake wasn't one of the highest rated it was middle of the pack for the season at a 6.5.

As I said before the ratings had regained its footing at the time of Beefcake. I never stated Beefcake was the lowest rated episode. I sad it regained it footing from the Jill/Chuck arc at that time when Cole came onto the scene. I said the combo of the results of that episode and what followed it in Chuck vs. The Lethal Weapon that concluded the Sarah/Cole arc lead to a series low of 5.6 (I went back and rechecked as the previous number I gave was wrong) which is the truth.

But since you are the end all be all know it all would your care to state what the ratings where for Chuck vs. The Lethal Weapon the episodes following Beefcake after the writers/producers pissed off the fans?

Also you say "Plus, the fuckin' writers are putting them together this season."....Got a link for that claim as the writers/producers have been pretty much been stating the opposite of that since Comic-Con. They have been going on and on about new love interests for both Chuck and Sarah once again this in a love quadrangle. There have even been mentions that Awesome and Ellie might get pulled into as well.

I am as convoluted about the new Superman as I am about Green lantern. So much litigation, false starts, cast and directorial rumors. I need a scorecard to keep up with who is doing what, and what is a done deal. Routh was (IMO) fine as superman/Kent, but I don't think he has the range of Chris Reeve (RIP) or Tom Welling. But I wanted to see a solid Smallville tie in, a jump to bigscreen.

Routh was certainly the best part of the (I agree with MCVamp) overly reverent Superman Returns. I caught this indie movie he's in called Fling on Showtime the other night and he was pretty good in that (also, btw, a romantic rival for the main character). But yeah... adding in a romantic triangle can be a real death knell for a show. Maybe it's just to get dudes' girlfriends more hooked into it so it can be a show they'll both watch? Eh.
