Is This Whiplash's Final Costume In IRON MAN 2??

Published at:  Aug 24, 2009 11:10:23 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

Merrick again...

Evidently, this news was posted elsewhere (besides ReelzChannel - linked below) late last week - like MTV. Somehow it feel through the cracks here, but is interested (and unreported on our site to date) all the same...

Merrick here...

Admittedly, there's a degree of extrapolation involved here...but THIS REPORT over at ReelzChannel might've made a pretty good catch:

Whether intentionally or inadvertently, a piece of art potentially depicting Mickey Rourke's final "Whiplash" costume from IRON MAN 2 may've been issued by way of a Marvel announcement re: an upcoming publication (that's a really bad sentence, I know, I'm too tired to fix it right now).

Per Reelz...

The latest image of Whiplash comes from a Marvel announcement of a new comic book series, Iron Man Vs. Whiplash, which Marvel Editor Bill Rosemann boasts will connect to the movie by filling in the details of Whiplash's history before he appears in Iron Man 2

Keeping this in mind...

CLICK HERE TO SEE THE DESIGN IN QUESTION!!!

Again, a bit conjectural. But Reelz's theory makes sense...and unintentional reveals of this nature happen frequently...so I wouldn't be surprised if this ends up making an appearance in the film.

Thoughts?

    by kained_but_able

The leg and the arm are vulnerable but its the lack of armour on the top of his skull that I'd take advantage of if I was Stark. Just bring the fist down on his cranium and the film's over.

    by the starwolf

"I think Whiplash is showing way too much skin."

I'm betting they wouldn't be complaining about this nearly as much if Whiplash were female.

As for Whiplash vs Iron Man, well, Iron Man flies, and Whiplash doesn't. Iron Man has ranged attacks and can hit him from orbit, while Whiplash can't. Unless Whiplash goes after an un-armoured Stark, the writer(s) have their work cut out making it an interesting fight.

but all this talk about "limbs being exposed" needs to end. It's a film based on a fucking comic book about a guy who builds himself a metal suit to fight the baddies. Realism is not necessary. Just make a damn good flick. Honestly compared to the first release pic, I hope this piece of art is teh final costume, it looks pretty bad ass.

While it may seem childish to some (like yourself), this site always prided itself on it's relevance and up-to-the-minute approach of reactionary solicitation and publishing. This site is routinely behind most stories by 3-4 days and sometimes (like this instance), it's behind a week or two. Childish? No...and even you could publish faster than this site is doing - this is a site being supported by ADVERTISERS; those advertisers require eyeballs..and only relevance ensures eyeballs bud. It's not childish..it's economics.

    by deviant apex

I can almost guarantee this is his suit in the film. I mean come on, the electro-whips, circular power unit, etc? Its similar to the stills of Mikey Rourke we have seen before only more completed looking. As for not being armored in certain places I havent a clue. Maybe Whiplash figures because he has those whips that Iron Man wouldnt be able to get close enough to him to exploit his weakness anyway. Oh yeah, and wasnt Mandarin supposed to be in this or did they scrap him?

That's the reason he cited for his ambivalence about doing Sin City 2. In other words, "you'll have to pay me a lot more to sit in that makeup chair for 3 hours again." You can reason from there that he'd probably demand something more airy than the Iron Man/War Machine suits.

Or later, when Iron Man blew up all the weapons without harming any innocent villagers? Should've gone with Mandarin

    by aliendragqueen

Just like Spiderman 2, the sequel should be balls out, featuring a stronger, more dangerous, bigger villain. I know nothing of Whiplash, but he seems to be more of a henchman than a major baddie. Isn't Mandarin Iron Man's primary nemesis? As silly as he might seem, he is hell bent on world domination, controls an army of minions and has magical powers that can overcome Iron Man's tech. I guess their strategy is to go for a trilogy and save him for the 3rd movie, but fuck that, just go bigger and better than taking a step down.

The Rourke-Man is a tough mofo without any armor at all. I'd like to see him play most of his scenes without the mask. He's badass enough to school RDJ with his grizzled voice alone. Also, is ScarJo doing the accent? Cuz I love that chick, but she's not the greatest thespian.

    Regarding the Mandarin...

    by creaturecantina

Writing the Mandarin would be tough given Marvel's decision so far to exclude "magic" from the Avengers universe. I don't think they plan to breach anything supernatural until Thor. Mandarin's rings of power wouldn't fit very well in the Iron Man universe as it's been written to date. If there was magic out there, I'll bet Stark would have been researching it.

    by mullah omar

Did the guy wake up too early and now have enough time to put on the whole suit? This design has a lot of Achilles Heels. The writers are going to have to do some fancy footwork to show why Stark and others can't just blow his arm off or punch his head off his body.

Why is "magic" always in discussion when the Mandarin comes up?

    by anakinsdiapers

The Mandarins rings are alien technology. It's always been alien technology.
The real problem with tackling the Mandarin is his "fu Manchu-Ming the merciless" persona that has been his over all characterization. Otherwise, Super Science is definately an Iron Man subject that isn't a problem subject, even if it's alien.

But pretty "meh" overall. I guess the idea is to make it look as much like Iron Man as possible?I just don't have a real good feeling for this film in general. I don't think Whiplash is a viable villain and Mickey Rourke trying to do a Russian accent has the potential for unintentional comedy.I'm sure watching Downey jr. riff will be funny, but otherwise I'm worried.

I hate three facts concerning the rings origin

    by ominus

1.That they are alien. It somehow takes the chinese myth out of them and makes them less impressive.Imagine if the LOTR rings were parts of the engine of an alien spacecraft.jesus.
2.They made the aliens who were the original owners of the rings,as dragonlike humanoids living undercover as capitalists. again the element of the chinese dragon myth is gone.ffs.
3.Fin Fang Foom who is one of those alien,in his non-humanoid form which is that of a chinese giant, mythical dragon, happens to wear pants.PANTS.wtf was marvel smokin?
anyway Mandarin should be in the IM movies, and eventually this will happen, the question is who actor would be perfect for this role?

    by ominus

obviously they are trying not to follow again the route of good armor vs bad armor, like in the first movie. But if the wearer of the Whiplash costume, has half of his body exposed, that means that Iron Man will be half in the movie underpowered or powerless.u know like in the superman movies.

He's going to be Asian, but he's going to be "South East Asian" like the terrorist leader from Iron Man 1. IMO the terrorist leader from IM1 will be the Mandarin. His origins will be slightly rebooted. From what I remember of the Mandarin there's no way he'll work on film in is original form.

    Weaknesses a-plenty

Of course Whiplash can use his whips to deflect incoming projectiles. Let's see him deflect an EXPLOSION as Tony shoots one of those tank-busting mini-missiles at the ground in front of him. Explosion/shock wave should knock Whiplash off his feet, leaving him an easy target. Or, have Tony in front, War Machine in back ... and then bring in some gumby with a pistol to take Whiplash out from the side while he's using his whips front/back. Whiplash was meant to be a mafia enforcer, and against normal people with no powers, he's very dangerous. Aginst a super of Iron Man's power level? Not a hope.

    The real question

    by whofan71

is why in the hell AICN sold ad space to the COS? I have lost what little respect I may have had left for this site.
