‘He’s Gonna Kill Us All!!’ Learn How HBO’s TRUE BLOOD Ends!!

Published at:  Aug 23, 2009 1:56:50 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Now let’s see if I got this right. Dark-haired vampire Bill was sired by a female vampire, and we learned via flashbacks they long ago did a lot of nasty murderous stuff together. And a nasty handsome blonde vampire, who once menaced superpowered blonde human waitress Sookie, now wants to be her boyfriend. When do we get the flashback to the gypsy curse that gives Bill his soul?

Last week! Everybody risked everything to save Godric The Friendly Vamp, but he got all burned up anyway!

Also? It sure was nutty how Louisiana natives Sookie and Jason Stackhouse both suddenly wound up in the same Dallas anti-vamp camp at exactly the same time!

This week! Everybody’s back in Louisiana for a big vampire-lycan throwdown!

Before we get into the final three episodes of season two, I want to throw something out there. Here’s talkbacker “imascooby1985” commenting on last year’s pilot:

Well if the main character didnt have telekenesis then someone does, because I remember that chain flying from [Sookie’s] hand and wrapping itself around the bald guys neck. And then his wife/ girlfriend asking why he cant just pull the chain off as they ran away. She may not be telekinteic in the books but she appears to be in the show.

I too thought, while watching that scene, that Sookie was telekinetic, and was half-expecting her telekinesis to reassert itself as the big bald Christian vamp-hater was yanking off Sookie’s panties last week. Were we seeing things in that pilot or was the idea of Sookie’s mind-over-matter powers simply abandoned after the first episode?

Episode #22: “New World in My View”
Debut: SUNDAY, AUG. 23 (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
Sookie, Bill and Jason return to a Bon Temps turned upside down by Maryann. Lured to Merlotte’s by Arlene (Carrie Preston), Sam and Andy find cold comfort in their refuge from a group of bloodthirsty revelers. Bill discovers that traditional vampire techniques don’t work on Maryann; Hoyt and Jessica try to keep a lid on Maxine’s madness; and Sookie tries to push through the darkness consuming Tara. With all hell breaking loose, Jason takes the bull by the horns to rescue Sam, at least for the moment. Written by Kate Barnow & Elizabeth R. Finch; directed by Adam Davidson.

Episode #23: “Frenzy”
Debut: SUNDAY, AUG. 30 (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
With the crisis in Bon Temps careening out of control, Bill seeks out the advice of Sophie-Anne (Evan Rachel Wood), the Vampire Queen of Louisiana, but must exercise patience before she gives him critical information. Meanwhile, Sookie and Lafayette find that protecting Tara from herself is more difficult than they anticipated; a desperate Sam turns to an unlikely source for assistance; and Jessica tests Hoyt’s allegiance to Maxine. Written by Alan Ball; directed by Dan Minahan.

Episode #24: “Beyond Here Lies Nothin’”
Debut: SUNDAY, SEPT. 13 (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
Bon Temps reaches a fever pitch as Maryann prepares for her ultimate bestial sacrifice, conscripting Sookie to be Maid of Honor at the bloody nuptials. Meanwhile, Sophie-Anne warns Eric to keep the lid on Bill's inquisitiveness; Jason leads Andy into the heroic abyss; and Hoyt struggles with Maxine's endless stream of insults. Deliberating on what may be his final move to save Sookie and the town, Sam places his trust, and his life, in a most unlikely ally.

That’s the season finale. HBO has already announced it’s bringing the show back for season three next summer.

9 p.m. Sunday. HBO.

    RE: Telekinesis

    by system_vital_few

You know, the internet being what it is these days, answers to questions like these are pretty easy to find.

From the IMDB True Blood FAQ
    Is Sookie telekinetic?
No.The tightening chain might be explained by the initial intent to cast Sookie's faerie-godmother "Claudine" during Sookie's defense of Bill from the Rattrays. In this original shooting, visible in the pre-aired pilot, the chain's movement is interpolated with Claudine's fixation on it -- possibly a telekinetic manipulation. Claudine is edited from the aired pilot, but the movement of the chain remains. So although the chain is tightening around Macks neck she is only telepathic.

    by annoyyou

Ball *is* changing Harris's stories to fit his Whedonesque template, isn't he? The only difference is that Eric is the alpha male and Bill is the beta, and if Ball stays at least a little true to the books, Eric becomes Sookie's main love interest. Eric is definitely the more interesting of the two vamps, particularly after the whole Godric storyline (which was changed greatly from the books). We'll see - I just don't want another tired old protracted love triangle. That's boring.

    by mr_sinister

In that pre-aired pilot, you could clearly see a woman hiding in the bushes when Sookie attempts to save Bill from the redneck couple. The mysterious figure stares at the chain and causes it to go flying out of Sookie's hands and wrap around Mack's neck. I wonder if they are also abandoning the whole faerie history the books deal with.

    by laserpants

Sorry, but it had to be said. As great as Buffy was, and as much as an influence as it may have been, True Blood is WAY better than Buffy and does way cooler, more adult things with the symbols and metaphors. Sorry, but its true. Time to get over Buffy! A series which ran out of steam after it's third season and limped through four more.Put another way, True Blood is a hip, hilarious, satirical, sexy, awesome, Buffy for adults.

character since Spike (and let's face it they have quite a bit in common, at least superficially). If he's going to become Sookie's main love interest, more's the better.

Also, while "True Blood" may be more violent and sexual than "Buffy" was, it is in no way a superior show.

    by laserpants

Your show died. It died four seasons after it should have ended (season 2 and season 3 are GREAT, everything after that was TERRIBLE). Actually... all your shows have died! So sorry! You can go cry on your Spike doll now.Btw, I'm a big fan of Buffy and Angel (and Firefly for that matter) but True Blood is WAY better than both and it's insane, and more than a little sad, to suggest otherwise.Of course, it wouldn't be sad if you were a 15 year old girl. It would be understandable. Are you a 15 year old girl, jae683? Or a 40 something adult who should have moved on already? Why do I have the sneaking suspicion that its the latter and you are on some kind of sex offender list?

    by laserpants

But True Blood is better. Sorry! Also: you do realize that Whedon didn't invent vampires, right? They've been around for at least as long as Bram Stoker and even he stole the idea. In other words: get over it.

Whedon Also Didn't Invent The Idea Of Love Triangles

Believe it or not, stories of love triangles have existed, in one form or another, since the oral tradition was king and the wheel was bleeding edge technology. In short, again: get over it.

    by gravitysrainbow

Take it to the Zone. It's rare that we get a chance to discuss True Blood here.

Isn't Tara and her boyfriend at least somewhat smart enough to realize that these blackouts might have to do something with the crazy bitch in their lives? It's a bit of a stretch that they haven't caught on to her yet.

Some days I'm watching the show and I see Andy LeFleur and all I can think is Frank Sabotka!

I'm glad the pace has picked up but some things are really starting to annoy me. For some reason, Paquin decided to make Sookie all sorts of fucking annoying. She delivers everything like she's an idiot, but she must think that its her being all innocent and whatnot. Between that and Bill being a pussy, I'm starting to hope that the focus of the show steers away from them.

    by freebeer

And before LaserPants gets all preachy and condecending again I'm just expressing an opinion. If you prefer True Blood I couldn't give two flying disks of cow manure, I'm not going to belittle you. It is my opinion that True Blood is a pretentious bore that takes itself way too seriously whereas both Angel and Buffy were funny, thrilling, heartbreaking delights. The characters in both shows were also far more compelling and watchable than the self absorbed tossers I see strutting around in True Blood, or so I found. Just my opinion, if you think I'm way off the mark here then fair enough, maybe I'm missing something. Besides, the tragically short lived Firefly was superior to all three.

And while watching, or rewatching either, I almost never feel the need to compare them. They're really quite different shows, and you whedonites (of which I consider myself) need to let go, just cause it's vampires doesn't mean it's trying to emulate Buffy. And to go against what I just said about comparing, are you guys kidding?!? Bill would rip Spike's head off. As much as I loved Buffy, the fight scenes were mostly hopelessly neutered and cheesy. I dont feel like the spar-speed kung fu vamps of Buffy would get far.

I always thought the whole "angel had no sould when he did evil things" was a copout. TB vampires have to try really REALLY hard to mainstream, there's no magic spell for them. I understand, that's the way the story evolved in the Buffyverse, but I've always felt Whedon and co started to regret the whole "vampires have no souls" angle around the fourth season, when they gave Spike the chip.

I haven't read the spoilers above, but just wanted to say that Maryanne's character is turning out to be a nice Big Bad this season. I love the idea of her turning the whole town on him, not wure if that's the way it's going to go in these final three episodes but her scene where she goes into the restaurant and starts controlling people to find out where he is, followed with her crazy voice yelling to bring him to her was awesome. I'm curious as to how they will end her story.

    TB vs. Buffy vs. Angel

    by clupula

Buffy's last two seasons tarnished the show greatly. If it had ended with her sacrificing herself for Dawn, that would have been a great ending. But they dragged it out for two more awful (especially S6) years.
Angel, once it got to S3, was amazing. Like Buffy, its first season was incredibly weak. S2 had some great moments, but the Pylia crap ruined it. But from S3 to the end, it was strong.True Blood certainly started better than either of them, but I can't say it's better or worse until it's been on a few more years.

    by crow3711

I mean, I enjoy it, it's a fun show, but fun is the only adjective I can give it. It's also...functionally retarded, is how I would put it. The acting and dialogue is beyond atrocious for an HBO show. It's so fucking cheesey and operatic it makes me want to kill myself sometimes. But I haven't met one other rational person who watches this show who sees the flaws here. They literally think its the best show ever put on tv, especially girls. by nudeandaroused

I don't think that Angel was the first vampires with a soul. While certainly one of the better characters lately, he wasn't the first. I think Barnabas Collins was first vampire with a soul. I enjoy the show. I also like Bill Compton. He is very much stuck in the past. My understanding about "true Blood" is that the show is allegorical and satirical rather than supernatural. To see what I think is better than "True Blood" and is just as socially relevant, I suggest "Being Human" On BBC.

Am I the only one who thinks they could have cast Sookie better? Reading the books, she's supposed to be very hot and voluptuous, but everyone thinks she's borderline retarded or something because of her mindreading. When I read the book I was picturing Diora Baird as Sookie. Now THAT would have been some hot casting. Anna Paquin has her moments of hotness, but she is far from voluptuous. Diora Baird fits perfectly IMHO.

Yeah, romantic triangles are an ancient story motif,,,

    by annoyyou

...but that makes them all the more tired and boring. Even Charlaine Harris has sidestepped them in the books - Bill fucks up, Sookie rejects him, she takes up with other men, and as of the last book, the most important one turns out to be Eric. No triangles, no fights for possession, no undue bad feeling (other than what normally comes with breakups) and little melodrama - and the books are STILL more interesting than the series is shaping up to be. Romantic triangles are the stuff of bodice rippers and daytime soap operas, and yeah, I suppose True Blood is enough of a cheesefest that it absolutely demands at least one. It's just a little disappointing that we have to wade through another one.

    On TB vs. Buffy

    by i am_notreal

Being as poorly versed in Buffylore as I am (watched a couple of times, laughed when I wasn't supposed to be laughing, and never went back), I didn't know what in the Jeebus Herc was talking about at first. But I get it now. Herc clearly doesn't think much of this show and feels his beloved Buffy is somehow threatened by True Blood's popularity. I say the world's big enough for at least two vampire shows, especially when one has been off the air for years now. By the way, Buffy will probably always be one of Time Magazine's Top 50 TV shows of all time, whether or not I agree. So you guys can relax, it's OK - True Blood will never be on the that list. I like it, but the writing is too full of inconsistencies and slack to for it to ever reach greatness. At best, it's just an entertaining romp.

Please. Anna Paquin is hardly an oscar level actress. Just because she won an oscar at whatever age she was does not make her an oscar level actress. Lots of mediocre (and even bad) actors and actresses have won oscars. Besides, Baird is a very capable actress. You shouldn't descriminate just because she started out as a model and is gorgeous (just like Sookie is supposed to be in the books).

What she DID invent the genre of lonely whiny vampires who do all kinds of things vampires should not do, including becoming rock stars and shit like that. Rice is responsible for opening the flood gates to people who don't understand horror and try to write it anyway, they use supernatural-horror elements and shoehorn them into romance novels or oh-so-quirky-and-funny stories, so we have shit like Anita Blake Vampire Hunter, Twilight, and True Blood. Vampires don't fall in love and have sex.

Last night's episode was so bad. I understand every TV show is going to have its bad episodes. Last night's was hopefully an outlier and not a trend for things to come. It was so out of the realm that even in the make believe world of True Blood it was ridiculous... for me.

  • Sam and Andy realizing they're screwed, Jason pretending to be God and Tara's "worst intervention ever" made for a fun outing. A welcome change from the seriousness of last week's ending.

Only two episodes left until next summer. And I'm sorry, but DOLLHOUSE is not going fill the void from this show's absence.

I fucking love this show. It's gotten so good the last few episodes I don't want the season to end. I also love seeing Sookie naked. My wife likes to do the mutual masturbation thing during this show. She's got Jason, Bill and Eric to salivate over, and I have Sookie. If she would just put on a schoolgirl outfit that would be fantastic. Dontcha think? Anyway the next season can't come soon enough, at least we have 3 more eps in the pipe.

    by superxy

To suggest that because True Blood is a sexy, satirical, adult show makes it better than Buffy is retarded. That is what Buffy was, just a decade earlier and on a PUBLIC network. Buffy had much, MUCH better writing. I love True Blood, but it has proven to be incredibly predictable. There are already tons of continuity holes in the storytelling. And the only characters that are worth giving a damn about are Sam, Eric, and Lafayette. You can't possibly tell me that Sookie and Bill - the people who are supposed to be the main characters - are the reasons you watch this show. It is a cool show because there is nothing at present to compare it to. But, it gets most of its fans by being over the top. Gore and sex. There are some great metaphors for homosexuals and minorities in society, but those metaphors have been greatly played down this season so the show could reach a large audience. It is the Brock Lesnar of vampire shows, while Buffy was the old school Muhammad Ali.

    True Blood? Buffy?

    by red ned lynch

I love seasons 1-5 of Buffy. Rewatch them with my kids now. When Buffy was good it is better than True Blood has been to this point. When Buffy was bad it was worse than True Blood has been to this point. True Blood has been consistently goofy with the continuity of a swiss cheese and mushroom burger. But I enjoy it. Lots of sex, a light touch, and likable, colorful characters.

...are about a fifty-fifty proposition at this point. In the books the body in the car at the end of season one was Lafayette. And some of the fairy stuff is a bit much to take. On the other hand Sam had a picture book of animals that let him change into things more interesting than Benjie and post-telportation Jeff Goldblum.

And yeah I recall the first\second episode of last season, but the moment was soon overtaken by better plot devices. Herc your focusing on one single little aspect of a year+ old episode is beyond irksome. Makes you look like an idiot, actually. Last nights scene with Maryann did however prove there's more to Sookie than just reading minds, she just doesn't know it and therefore doesn't use it and is as surprised as a bystander when something of her gift(s) manifests. 10 ways TRUE BLOOD is influenced by ANNE RICE

    by zombieheathledger

    1. The way the vampires in True Blood make other vampires, I bite you, you bit me back. Hitherto Anne Rice, in vampire lore, it was like Wolfman, if you got bit, you became one, there needn't be reciprocation.
    2. The idea that the older vampires are stronger than the newer vampires.
    3. The idea of vampires who have inner moral conflict about taking human lives to survive. Hitherto Anne Rice, vampires had no crises of conscience.
    4. Everyone knows that the Anne Rice novels are New Orleans, and thus, Louisiana-centric which is exactly where True Blood is set (in the fictional Louisiana town of Bon Temps).
    5. The idea of the vampire world going public which was what LeStat did by becoming a rock star and having his song lyrics being all the secrets of the vampire world.

    6. The idea of a ruling class of vampires (the older and more powerful ones).
    7. The idea of vampires taking humans as companions and keeping them human (though they can't have sex in Anne Rice's books).
    8. The idea of warring vampires.
    9. The way Bill's maker tried to convince him to drink from the bellhop was totally LeStat's "Never forget Louis, YOU ARE A KILLER!" speech to a reluctant Louis.
    10. The idea that older vampires rarely need to feed anymore.

How is it product placement for Dead Space when they didn't mention the title of the game or show a logo or credits or anything. They only said "playing Wii makes her focus" or something like that. I don't see how they plan to sell a bunch of copies of Dead Space if nobody watching True Blood knows what game it is.

...you need to read some vampire stories that predate Anne Rice. Seriously. Your list? Renfield much? Dracula's three female vampire thralls? Throw in some Somtow and a little Matheson and you've got maybe a four item list, at least of things that were first seen in Rice's novels. Now maybe you're just saying stuff that happened to be in her books, but the way you've presented the list it looks more like you're suggesting these things originated with her.

    This MaryAnne Business..

    by karuma

....has to stop and soon. Alan Ball has gone waaaaaaaaaaaayyy too far with it. A whole season of MaryAnne has been booooooooooring. There are far better story lines from the books he could be pursuing. MaryAnne was a minor character in one book and should have stayed that way in the TV series. On the other hand, it is a real shame they are not bringing Bubba into the series. He added a much needed comic relief element in the short amount of scenes he was in. Ball says he would have to hire an Elvis impersonator but I don't think that's true. In the books, Harris always said he looked like a shadow of Elvis so an actor who could play Elvis would be just fine. Hopefully, MaryAnne dies or moves on at the end of this season and Ball can delve into some real interesting story lines. If you have read the books, you know what I mean.

    Godric vs Maryann threads

    by growltiger

The Dallas adventure was great and Godric had his crowning moment of awesomeness to end that thread. I think of him as epitomizing a stoic, Apollonian philosophy.

Maryann, on the other hand, is out and out Dionysian. She lives to party because ecstasy, not measured response, will set you free. Or so she says. In any case, her defence of ecstactic and unbounded behavior was so touching.

I feel that Alan Ball is really on to something here.

    by growltiger

... were demons and by definition soulless. Somehow, someway, Angel and Spike got their souls back. Hilarity ensued.

Harris' vampires are people who were somehow changed. So Vampire Bill tries to hold on to his humanity. He was a Southern gentlemen and holds to his ways.

Eric is an opportunist. Even on his death-pyre, with Godric offering him immortality, he had the temerity to ask what was in it for him.
