Learn Which VIRTUALITY Star Just Ascended To The Pilot For HBO's A GAME OF THRONES!!

I am – Hercules!!
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who played Commander Frank Pike in the pilot for Fox's spaceship saga “Virtuality,” will play “Kingslayer” Jaime Lannister, a knight and key player in HBO's pilot for “A Game of Thrones.”
Coster-Waldau joins Sean Bean, Mark Addy, Kit Harrington, Jack Gleeson, Harry Lloyd and Jennifer Ehle, recently cast as Catelyn Stark.
Also just added to the cast are Iain Glen ("Resident Evil: Extinction") as disgraced knight Ser Jorah Mormont, Tamzin Merchant (2005's "Pride and Prejudice") as exiled teenage princess Daenerys, Richard Madden (the BBC's "Hope Springs") as Robb Stark, Sophie Turner ("Doctor Who") as Sansa Stark, Maisie Williams as Arya Stark and Alfie Allen ("The Other Boleyn Girl") as Stark ward Theon.
“The Visitor” director Tom McCarthy is reuniting with his “Station Agent” star, Peter Dinklage, for the project, based on George R.R. Martin’s series of “A Song of Ice and Fire” fantasy novels

I have read all the books and if they stick to the story, it could be as good as Rome
-
I can see this being a very good series...jus hope they dont start deviating from the books too much as I have never read a book *or series of books* where so many main characters die when you least expect it...so.....c'mon...be good...please?
-
but I don't know if that will happen. HBO has so many damn pilots lined up, you just know they'll cut at least a few chances for some shows to turn into series. It sounds so good at the moment though. Promising indeed.
-
hehe, great minds and what not :)
-
...including some that afaik hasn't been leaked elsewhere. http://grrm.livejournal.com/
-
We shall see. Never heard of the book, but it seems this genre is due for a comeback. Or are teen vampires still too dominate in TV/Film?
-
We don't need another WHEEL OF TIME situation on our hands.
-
Now I'm watching.
-
Fuck you Fox for transmitting a good pilot that will never be...
-
i had Sean Bean in my head as Ned. super fucking excited for this and super fucking excited to see him in the roll.<p>like people have said, if this is done right it could not only do wonders for the genre of fantasy, but be some of the best TV ever.
-

you know I've tried to get into teh first book over and over
by logicalnoise01
and I don't know what it is, I'm just not getting the atmosphere and plot that makes me come back and care about the charecters. Meanwhile I finished the first book of the dark tower series and I can't wait to continue. Hopefully HBO picks up this show and maybe makes me interested in the story again.
-
They really seem to be taking this seriously. I was worried they were going to cast some wispy pretty boy as Jaime -- but this guy looks the part. Handsome, but I can believe he'd kick a little ass.
-
This will be indeed be something wondrous. <p>Unlike James Cameron's forthcoming 'Dances With Thundersmurfs'...
-
Buy the book, my man. You won't be disappointed!
-
Best saying ever.
-
Gotta say...this is the first casting decision I'm disappointed in. Danny is supposed to be dropdead gorgeous. She'd better be one hell of an actress.
-
The only pictures that I can find of this Sophie Turner lady, cast as Sansa, make her look entirely too old to play the part. I realize that they've got to play around with the ages of some of the characters but I've got to believe that this is incorrect.
-
ditto. hopefully the Sophie Turner they cast is some unknown, or at least unknown enough to not be all over google.
-

I thought Denzel Washington or Russell Crowe was in this...
by MrMysteryGuest
They starred in a movie called "Virtuality" a million years ago...
-
Of course no one will fit the characters we have imagined as we read the books, but these aren't bad. And I think this Dany is OK because at the beginning of the story she seems very weak and frail so I think the actress has that going for her. The question is can she make the transition when Dany develops her inner strength? Also, Martin has some pictures of the Stark girls on his blog.
-
with the story that plays out in these books it definately can be better. They've got to pick this series up.
-
the first time I tried to read GoT but I only read like a chapter or two if that. I wasn't in the right frame of mind to figure out a whole new fantasy world. I went back to it though at the urging of several friends with impeccable taste in fantasy fiction, gave it a fair shake and was forever hooked after about 3-4 chapters. Give it another shot. I also love The Gunslinger and Dark Tower but the last 3 books in that series are a disappointment.
-
According to Martin's blog the Sophie Turner hired is NOT the one from teh Doctor Who episode and is a lot younger. Follow some of the links posted for pictures of the girl, who is much more in line with the age needed.
-
They've really done a fantastic job on casting for this thus far. Sounds like Martin is even casting beyond the pilot. <p> And just so I can be a coax douche: NO PROJECT RUNWAY TALKBACK?!?!
-
lol. Denzel for Jalabar Xho?
-
Not nearly as pretty I thought the Kingslayer would be. I can forgive the lacking of the Lannister blond.
-
Because that would be truth in advertising.
-
Wow, that's pretty fucking silly...
-
...about this. These are really awfully good, brutally dark books. They have a particular flavor and a very careful balance. Am I sort of exicted at the notion of them being done? Sure. But doing them well just seems so unlikely, such a one in a thousand shot...hey, I hope it works.
-
Yeah agreed with a few comments above. The first thing I did when I saw the name of the actress they cast for Dany was google her, and wtf. She isn't hot at all compared to how they write her in the book. Which is a shame, because there should be lots of hot titty scenes with her as the series progresses. First disappointment around anything I've read associated with the TV series.
-
I don't care what anybody says. I am so invested in the wheel of time series at this point that I have to see it through. Sure the last few books have been full of filler and little effort to move the story forward but I still and dying for The Gathering Storm. I've read a couple of early reviews and they are very positive. Brandon Sanderson was a good choice to finish up the series and the last book will come out by 2011 so I'm excited that the story will move forward. ASoIaF is a terrific series but I still prefer the WoT.
-
Did I say Ice Zombies? Hell yeah I did. Winter is Coming!
-
Quick, blow open the hatch!
-
Nothing since Xena and Hercules.
-
I think the odds of it being a good, possibly great series (if it gets picked up) are a lot better than you think. Considering it's HBO, who always have stellar shows; that they plan on doing one book per season, which gives it time to develop; and that Martin will be involved and he was a former TV writer so he knows how shit works. I have faith and I pray that it goes to series.
-
Not sure about Sansa though. The picture on Martin's blog is terrible, but I always pictured Sansa as being the best looking out of all the women in the book. Danny a close second. The casting for Robb Stark looks spot on. I always pictured Eric from True Blood as Jamie, but he is probably way too young if he is supposed to be the same age as Ned. Theon looks younger than I always imagined, but it does look right. The weasel looks right. Do we know who will play Cersei or Ned's wife yet? I assume both have to be real lookers.
-
will be played by Jennifer Ehle. Cersei hasn't been cast yet.
-
For a lengthy costume and fx heavy series like this isn't it a bit crazy to just shoot a pilot? How much can even happen in a single episode/movie in this brilliant but sprawling story? Then, if it gets the green light based on the pilot will they even be ab;e to assemble the same cast back?
-
and it was great. I don't regret it. Onto the casting: You need a badass to play Jamie, with an edge. People forget, hes isnt just a prick, hes one of the biggest badasses in all of Westeros, and one of the most courageous. He just is also a raging asshole.
-
you didnt go far enough into the first book. Try again and you will come to a scene in which the phrase "The thing I do for love..." is used, and you will be hooked, trust me. The first of many "W...T....F?!?!?!" moments I've had reading the books. Best fantasy series of all time.
-
I assume the cast is locked in to film the first season. The pilot won't air until HBO has greenlit the whole first season, so that the series can play once every week. I hope they do more then the standard 6-10 episode seasons. Give me like 15-20 episodes per season like broadcast TV.
-
Buy the book, brotha. Best fantasy series ever, better then LOTR. Yes, I said it.
-
They should get a giant star for that role, would shock the non-reader audience. Orlando Bloom?
-
will be gregor and sandor clegane
-
Love to see progress on this - now if only George would start writing again...

Best fantasy series out there. Please don't read it.
by Liberty Valance
If you haven't yet started this series, for the love of Superman do yourself a favor and wait until Martin actually finishes it. Because as any fan of Ice & Fire will tell you, the interminable wait between volumes is maddening. GRRM has to be the least disciplined writer on the planet. For the next book he's already made and missed about a half dozen self-imposed deadlines. He's got a shitload of other projects, travels extensively, attends any convention or trade show that will have him and spends every fall obsessing about football (the fucking Jets no less). At his current rate we're talking 15 years or more before the series is actually finished. It's fucking torture waiting for this masterpiece to continue.
-
The fact that HBO is doing this makes me feel good about it. The fact that each book will be whole season makes it even better. At least they will be able to stay faithful to the stories and tell them in their entirety. At least they didn't opt to put this on ABC Family like "Legend of the Seeker." Gay.
-
This guy could be what Paula Marshall used to be to new shows.
-
You hit the nail on the head with Martin it seems he has a million other things going on besides writing another book in the series. The other volumes all came at a pretty reasonable clip but I feel like the next one is never going to get done and I can only imagine how long it will take him to write more.
-
Jordan. Robert Jordan took his sweet time with the Wheel of Time series and died before he could complete it. I hope that doesn't happen here....
-
who's gonna play Hodor? Seriously though, Dinklage and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau have nabbed the two best roles.
-
GRRM is not your bitch. http://journal.neilgaiman.com/2009/05/entitlement-issues.html
-

-
Maybe that's the secret to writing good material. To go and experience life and keep yourself motivated and inspired instead of chaining yourself to your desk and make a deadline for yourself until you've written your book.
-
I got there and it was by far the highlight but I still felt little need to return. I know I'll come back to it but book 2 of dark tower already has me.
-
http://y frog.com/18tncastleblackandthewallj Fuck yeah
-
YES IT IS COOL!<p>This will get greenlighted, hopefully they don't change casting and approve it ASAP and order the whole 12 episode season!<p>Hopefully for 7 full seasons for the whole story!
-
I thought she needed a little more meat on the bones. Not too sure on the Stark kids. All of this will be moot if the pilot sucks which means the beginning will be kept due it being the hook. I also expect the pilot to cover most of Book I. The first book flies its the rest of them that get bogged down by too many characters. I love the books and appericate the author wanting to have a life. I just hope he outlined like Jordan, because if he dies and there is no end, this project will get scrapped early.
-
http://y frog.com/51tnredkeepatkingslandingj Wildfire, bitches!

It is 3 1/2 of some of the best, most awesome, original fantasy writing you will EVER read....and then King got off the yayo and got hit by a van (something he will remind you of over and over ad nauseum) and lost the thread of the story (kind of like what GRRM may be doing as we speak, minus the yayo and the van). The problem is, no one would leave him alone to write naything else UNTIL he finished Dark Tower (understandable, as up until then it was his masterwork). So, basically King said this: "Ok, you want an ending? I'll GIVE you an ending!!" and proceeded to whip out (spending about a week on each one) 3 of the most ludicrous, hideous, terrible, utterly fucking terrible books you will ever have the displeasure to set eyes on. Followed by an afterword of book 7 that basically reads like this: "Ok, you got your ending, happy now? Did you like it? Oh, you didnt? Now FUCK OFF!!!" If you ever want to be amused with a few hours to kill, go read Amazon's reader reviews of book 7 of the Dark Tower. The 1,517 pages of complete and total outrage (with a little fanboy blind attempts at justification thrown in for comic relief) are hilariously entertaining.
-
http://yfrog.com/51tnredkeepatkingslandingj "I wanna see him fly, Mommy!"
-
Dude an entire 12 episode season can barely contain book 1
-
looks amazing
-
wouldn't surprise me. The story constantly teeters on the what the fuck is he actually doing with all this. If I feel it's going to shit by book 4 I'll just check out a spoiler and jump back into game of thrones.

http://img197.yfrog.com/i/skycell.jpg/ The Arryns kept the only dungeon in the realm where the prisoners were free to escape at will...It was cold in the cell, the wind screamed night and day, and worst of all, the floor sloped. Ever so slightly, yet it was enough. He was afraid to close his eyes, afraid that he might roll over in his sleep and wake in sudden terror as he went sliding off the edge. Small wonder the sky cells drove men mad.
-
That's a pleasant thought, but it directly contradicts GRRM's output. He cranked out the first 3 volumes of the series in under 5 years. They garnered universal praise. He then took another 5 years just to complete the fourth volume, and it disappointed many (just check the Amazon reviews), though personally I savor any trip to Westeros. This fifth volume will be another 5 years minimum. It would seem that wandering the globe stifles Martin's creativity more than it nourishes it.
-
I'm on the 10th book of WOT right now. I can definitely tell why so many people bash it because of all the filler and such. But I've made it so far in that it's too late to turn back. I think I'll start on Song of Ice and Fire after I finish the upcoming book.
-
George RR Martin has time to blog about Plaxico Burress yet the next book is not ready for release? C'mon man.
-
MAJOR SPOILERS, don't read unless you've read Book 3! I enjoyed Feast as well, but there's two big reasons why it could never live up to most fan's expectations. First, no Jon, Tyrion or Dany. Once he decided to split it into two books, lots of people were automatically gonna be pissed that their favorite characters would be missing. Second, Storm of Swords was the craziest shit ever! Let's see: Jaime's hand, Red Wedding, Joff's wedding, Viper v. Mountain, the Battle at the Wall/Ygritte dying, Arya gettin all stabby on the Tickler: "Is there gold in the village?", Tyrion kinslaying, Hound "dies," Moon Door, Stoneheart. No way Book 4 could compete with that. Hell, the Red Wedding happens barely over halfway through the book. If they do this right it will be the best television ever, by a fair margin.
-
These guys struggle for years without making it. Suddenly, they cash in and want to milk it for all its worth. Jordan thought "Hmmm, if I keep this wheel of time going, I could keep cashing out forever!!". There was no reason for book 4 to be split. Just cut out the Brienne stuff, those chapters are literally amongst the most pointless, boring crap I've ever had the misfortune to read.

Why is Vituality or Virtuosity being regarded in high esteem?
by HellKing
They only showed a pilot and it wasn't given a season. Does it deserve this kind of recognition by just mere mentioning its name as if that were a brand of quality? And thus anyone associated with it were too somehow... special and it would be an honor to be in their prescence? I frankly don't remember any of the cast because it was a pretty lame show in the first place. Tis why it was cancelled before it started.
-
I expect Ned to be the Hand and the festival being in the pilot as well as what happens to Bran. The rest of the season will be all the filler stuff like Danni and Jon being part of the Black. Book 4 is a bit of disaster since it seems to focus on the least appealing characters instead of moving the plot along. Book 5 will hopefully get things to a move. I really do expect the Dragons to save the day and Danni with John.
-
The casting so far is absolutely PERFECT! I can't wait to see this, especially since the books are spot-on-perfect for the kind of ensemble drama that HBO loves.
-
ends with "the things I do for love," so its before the leave for King's Landing, although Ned agrees to become Robert's hand. The script has been out there for a while, and that was a pretty obvious climax.
-
GRRM took 4-5 years to complete each book except the 3rd, which took only 2. People don't realize but he started writing Thrones in 1992 and it was published in 1996 (part of that work became Clash). Only Storm was completed so quickly, but because people don't account for how long he took to write the original, they don't realize he is on the normal pace he has taken with all of the books, save one. Storm is the exception, not the rule. As for the # of episodes, the pilot script (I've read it) covers about 95 pages worth of material from Thrones, a book that is about 800 pages long (US paperback edition). It covers this material deftly and easily and doesn't seem rushed (indeed, it includes two new scenes and one new, long conversation not in the book). If they can cover about 12% of the book in 60 minutes, they should have more than enough time in the next 11 episodes to cover the remaining 88%.
-
It's a play on "ascending the throne". The show is Game of Thrones, so he's ascending the pilot. It's stupid, but there it is.
-
Because that fat-fuck heart attack waiting to happen Martin ain't going to get shit done once football season starts. Fuck him. Any interest I have in this series and this pilot is being squashed by the ever growing feeling that that fucker is going to leave us hanging forever.
-

Can someone please take George's passport and TV off him?
by BiggusDickus
It's the only way he'll ever finish these bloody books!
-
Sorry, I like the last Dark Tower book quite a bit. It got a little too deus ex machina, but was still well written. The only book I didn't like that much was Wizard and Glass. It's called difference of opinion, not being a "fanboy".
-
They were looking for an exceptionally beautiful girl and Tamzin Merchant, the one they are casting for Dany, is flat, not pretty enough for this role, I am not talking about real life. I saw her in The Tudors and I just sat and stared dumbly thinking, WTF is going on? And now they cast her for Dany? First disappointment, a really big ONE!
-
Except, of course, for Bean and Dinklage, and Bean isn't in it for long. I don't know if even the great Dinklage can sustain my interest. This cast is definitely not of "Rome" calibre (except for Bean, Dinklage) - more like "Hotel Babylon" or "Primeval." Very disappointing.
-
It had all the court intrigue/heroic knight/ancient myths you can expect in one contemporary package. It was too good to last. Still, this sound cool.
-
Unoriginal fucking thieves. It sucks that any "new" sci fi, space oriented series will have the shit look of BSG and the same level of boredom.
-
Personally, I believe that there is a certain cadre of fans that had 25+ years invested with the Dark Tower series, and cant admit that basically it was all a gigantic sham. How anyone can read those final 3 books and say it wasnt the biggest hack-job mail-in in literary history is utterly beyond me. A LITTLE Deus ex machina? Ya Think? What gave it away? Was it maybe when King himself ACTUALLY HAD A CHARACTER ANNOUNCE "Hi there, I'm the Deus Ex Machina and I'm here to save you!". That was only one of the myriad endless laughably bad moments in that final book.
-
its getting closer... i want a part...a man of dorne me thinks.
-
Perfect.
-
Ray Stevenson would be perfect for anything anytime. Great actor. How bout Ray Winstone too for that matter?
-
Now you've got me trying to think of something that would fit him. The Old Bear or Tywin Lannister, maybe Stannis if they take a little liberty with the age. Great actor.
-
brian dennehy should be in this too...winstone is brilliant for this as well. all fine actors welcomed.
-
I still have a hard time believing this series would translate well to TV. It would be quite the feat of strength to keep all the different sub plots going while keeping the show from seeming disjointed.
-
is Stannis. He's perfect.
-
has one of my favorite scenes in the entire series, in book 2 when they think Sansa is lost to the mob, and in he walks covered head to toe in blood with his sword in one hand and Sansa in the other. When Sansa asks him if he was frightened, since there was 100 of them and 1 of him and they could have killed him had they rushed him, he answers without missing a beat "The hound doesnt fear the sheep. Thats why they are who they are, and I am who I am." Utterly bad ass.
-
He's great, but Stannis is in his 30's. Again, could make a good Tywin. A lot of the characters are younger than they seem. I agree with Gooseud about that scene. My favorite scene with Sandor is probably when he and Sansa kill those two guys in the inn. Ray Stevenson is huge, can be darkly funny, can be convincingly badass, and the character isn't far at all from the one he played in Rome. Again, he's a bit older than the character, but they have to take some liberties somewhere.
-
Sandor and Arya, when she kills the Tickler. And I always pictured Dany as the girl from Bridge to Terabithia
-
Excellent casting. I'm really looking forward to this series.
-
I can't wait till this show is a hit (cuz you know it will be) then you'll have those shows like Entertainment Tonight and Access Hollywood having their half retarded reporters trying to pronounce the names or explain stuff.
-
There are new photos of the girls playing Arya and Sansa up on GRRM's blog now... They look good!
-
this novel series is complete, overblown garbage written by a washed up nobody who barely even was.
-
THIS WILL ROCK. The casting is dead on. Jamie Lannister is perfect. Handsome but not pretty. He doesn't look like a pussy American actor, thank god. Looks like he could kick the shit out of you unlike, say Ryan Phillippe. Arya I especially love. That new pic Martin put up is great. Her and Sansa. If Tom McCarthy can nail this, it has potential to become the new standard in fantasy filmmaking. The Irish and Moroccan locations are a good start. Especially Ireland. I've said it before but this is going to have that great overcast moors look all the fantasy films in the 80's had. You know, like Dragonslayer, Excaliber, Highlander etc. Hell yes. I'm more excited for this than The Hobbit.
