UPDATE!! The AVATAR Teaser Is Here!!
Merrick once more...
Apple seems to have resolved their issues. The AVATAR trailer is (easily and actually) available in all kinds of Glorious QuickTime...
HERE!!!
Merrick again, again...
If you're getting boned at Apple, the French version of the trailer can be found...
HERE!!!
Its exactly the same at the U.S. version, except it's not in QT & for one line of dialogue (dubbed into French) which translates to "This is great."
Merrick again...
There seems to be some funkiness with the apple site. Here are two links to HD versions of the trailer. We'll update again when everything's sorted out on Apple.

Looks alright, defo be there front and centre when it opens in December but for me Cameron will never, ever beat Aliens. Thats the film that made me fall in love with cinema....

for another Cameron classic. The music is fucking cool too.

very sad, but I enjoyed the leaked trailer yesterday, stunning.

Yet again...The avatar web team fails. Useless fucks. I think they are just trying to alienate the fan base. Lame.

Epic Fail etc. Why bother having the big countdown thing at all?

Love it! Can't wait for the 15 minutes tomorrow!

The music totally made the trailer. The Navi look a little stupid at first, but so did the aliens in District 9. After watching the preview multiple times they look less dumb. The action looks to be amazing though. I love that the marines are taken right out of Aliens. No need to reinvent the colonial marines. Maybe Avatar and Aliens takes place in the same universe?

Looks pretty fantastic, but is it just me, or do the Na'vi look .. slightly CGI...as in I just thought it'd look more realistic. Im sure itll be awesome though. The action sequences looked amazing.

Tank.
-
Back...back to your Abrams/Bay/McG shit. The moment where Worthington smiles at his avatar tells you all you need to know, you're in the hands of someone that actually know how to make films.
-
I know it's a teaser, but the lack of dialogue was a bit worrying. Otherwise it was...a hollywood sci-fi film. Maybe this thing only comes to life in 3D?
-
WTF? The alien action looks like a weird CG kids movie. My enthusiasm level has dropped to zero. James - let me know when you plan to make movies with people again.
-
Haha, thanks for the laugh. Yeah, this is a buzzkill. Where dat trailer at? I'll be patient. www.agenesisfound.com

nope.
-
I'm starting to get pissed at this movie.
-
This is it. We now all know the truth. This is ugly as shit, CG everywhere, this is Final Fantasy Spirits Within only 1000 times uglier, there is the same eyeball problem than those Zemeckis shites, thank god Rothman is going down with this but fuck it Jim, you should have realised that you had no taste and use some Rick Baker here and there. THIS IS INSANELY UGLY, and yes MSN works, not Glorious quicktime...

...I doubt many people will notice much eyeball fucking come December is this laughable trailer is anything to go by!
-
and I have one question to ask. That's the trailer for the videogame, right? right? because that can't be the real trailer, it simply cannot, it's so fucking cartoony its laughable!!! please let this be a hoax, a prank, this movie, from what I've seen in the teaser, cannot be this cartoony, come on JC, you can't be serious with this!!! fuck, no way you're raping my eyeballs with that limp, flacid, little, miniature cock of a teaser. Expectations checked.
-
...Looks like an xbox 360 game. i guess we've come as far as cgi can go....cause this SURE doesn't look photo realistic!!! At least the story should be ok, coming from cameron....but not impressed at all by the graphics.
-
Too action heavy and adult for little kids, too cartoony for adults.
-
thanks.
-
brilliant. tomorrow night cant come soon enough for me.
-
Are these just test shots or something in this trailer? They can't be the actual, finished, fully rendered shots...right? Because if they are, I gotta tell you, this looks like any other CGI movie I've seen in the past 5 or 6 years. I read the script like 10 years ago and it looks like they're following it pretty close from what I can see in the teaser. But come on, this is NOT anything game changing and my eyeballs were NOT fucked. Seriously...the CGI almost bordered on just plain run-of-the-mill stuff.

I just DON'T get how District 9 looked SO realistic for $30 mill, yet Lucas and Cameron spend WAy more, and get a less realistic view.

Okay, I tried each of the HD trailers (480, 720, 1080), and they tell me they're not files that Quicktime understands. So I try the standard def. and get a broken link symbol. So I tried a couple of the posted "this page works" links and all I get is a frozen green preview screen. I don't know about my eyeballs, but I feel fucked right now.

Does EVERY CG creature have to strike a pose and roar before attacking? It's almost as irritating as hearing the wilhelm scream for the thousandth time in a movie.

Not immediately impressed. I love James Cameron, but in the 15 years or so since he's made a sci-fi film, the design of sci-fi films has evolved. This looks very 90s to my eyes. I was thinking it'd looks more slick and sophisticated, but it's looking a little video-gamish and kids-film-like. But, it's just a trailer. I'm sure as an experience it'll be pretty amazing.
-
The new toys look great
-
I'm excited to see how this looks on the big screen in 3D.
-
Hopefully it will be one of those things where the story will make you forget you're watching some run-of-the-mill CGI. Just because it looks plain and ordinary doesn't mean that the movie will be. We'll have to see when it comes out.

And all we got was Star Wars Episode 1 but with more mechanical robots? FUCK YOU CAMERON

If it was just some random movie it would be one thing - this is a highly anticipated James Cameron film long in development and production that Cameron has built up as something truly groundbreaking. That's why it's being judged harshly.

You do know what "photo-real" means? Because these aliens are about as photo-real as The Hulk. Still want to see it, but don't give me crap and call it caviar.
-
Remember Matrix revolutions ??? Much much better photorealistic looking in this old steampile of shite, and don't tell me it was easier in a tech environment than in the Jungle, we are three years later.
-
Go clean the sand out of your vaginas and stop your bitching. Boo-fucking-who. Hating a movie based on 2 minutes of footage? REALLY?? Bitch as much as you want, the world will still continue to spin and the movie will still exist.
-
Download real player (it's free)...Then go back to the "frozen green preview screens", and instead of waiting for it to load, simply click "download with realplayer"...You will see the blue download screen if you scroll the mouse to the top right of the green strip...It works great for many embedded clips...
-
I don't know what the haters are talking about... like what kind of movie were you expecting??? Why hate on a movie like this? GO AWAY WHINERS.
-
What I meant is that there is clearly an element of wonder in the film... something I haven't seen in a film for years.
-
Was the one that paid money to stop Delgo from being seen.
-
I'm with you on part of your argument, but the point of using CG is to create convincing characters that are not simply just a man in a suit - and using mo-cap utilises an actor's performance, not just key frame animation. However, yep, the N'avi, while they look nice in terms of design, don't look like the photoreal characters Cameron said he was doing.

District 9 looked more real on a 30 million dollar budget!
by blackmantis
Cameron made the mistake of making his shots too beautiful, to the point that they look phony. Not impressed.
-
Winning the Lotto, fucking a supermodel, being elected President... those are game changers for a person. Seeing a movie is simply giving 2 hrs of yourself for a diversion. So... relax.<p> Second, it's a fucking teaser. So, anyone saying this movie is shit already is entitled to their opinion, but it's not based on much substance at all. <p> Personally, I think the Na'vi CG looks silly in places. But then 99% of CG is silly in my book. Newsflash: None of this shit is real.
-
Then yeah...it's photo real.
-
Sorry but I expected something...more. I'm tired of dodgy CGI creatures inhabiting dodgy CGI worlds, and this isn't, by the looks of things, going to be the one to change all of that after all. Despite the hype. Shame.
-
I am still very much looking forward to seeing the film. I hope the story is good, as it should be. Story front and centre, it's method of execution as invisible as it can be.

MARK MY WORDS!!!

That's what Cameron told us. This movie is going to "change everything". "Your eyeballs are going to be fucked" blah blah blah. If Cameron and everyone involved had just kept their fucking mouths shut and just released the movie without all the hyperbole, it may have been okay. But THIS?!?! Come on....
-
that was Cameron - and he has to answer for the disappointment.
-
Don't bitch at people who are pointing out how fake it looks. If Cameron hadn't made this into something it's not, none of these comments would exist. He deserves every bit of it.

cant wait to see some Avatar porn, hehe :)
-
When Cameron said "game changer" I think he was speaking in terms of the industry, not altering an permanently audience member's perception.
-
Exactly. That music as the gunship flies past the floating mountains... if that doesn't get to you there really is no hope. Expert teaser in my book.
-
Im kinda feeling this way, I love all James Camerons work, and Im sure I'll enjoy this movie, but now Im more excited for Chris Nolans trailer...the man who avoids cgi as much as possible.

<p>Seriously - it looks like what my nieces watch on Saturday AMs on the Cartoon Network.</p> <p> It's not REMOTELY by ANY stretch of ANY imagination 'photo real'. Not even close. What was Cameron thinking to convince himself otherwise?!?!</p> <p>Christ - actors in make-up could make this thing look better. Cameron needs to shut the hell UP now and forget the bragging rights. Avatar should be promoted as a high tech adult animation film - not the be-all and end-all of SciFi 2009.</p>
-
...others, not so much. The aliens look spectacular but 'the world' shots look like something out of a video game. <p> I'm intrigued, but no, there isn't any eyeball penetration happening here. <p> And I slaved over this candle-lit dinner with wine, waiting to set the mood for eyeball intercourse---for nothing!
-
and you'll find you're making THAT into something its not. This looks great, better than anything so far, can't wait for 3d tomorrow

I'm not sure what looks so shitty about this. I hope the CGI is polished up a bit more before release but it looks like a good sci-fi movie. Oh and District 9 was overrated.
-
That looks like an xbox 360 game alright. Holy crap. :(
-
there was `wonder`alright.I wondered what the fuck all the fuss is about.
-
And that's the only one I looked at. I love the way nearly every second looked. I'm official excited. Everybody won't like it. Some people just want to hate. Some people probably pumped themselves up too much and expected more. I didn't expect that much. And I actually expected something quite different. It was just a trailer, so I won't get silly about it. But I challenge everyone, in a friendly way, to name something else that it looks like. Doesn't look like the Final Fantasy. Doesn't look like any Pixar film. Doesn't look like any Dreamworks Animation. I saw just a tiny bit of clunkiness in the Avatar's running scenes, but that could just be there mechanics. The humans didn't seem to have the same funky stride. Anyway, I'm excited to sit in a theater opening weekend and geek out now. It will actually be my first film I see with any kind of new 3D technology.

after everything we've heard, it's little more than a CGI ferngully. Look at the shot of the ship landing in the forest, with the animal running away. That looks far too much like a painting, it's just not gritty enough to look anythign like real. And towards the end of the trailer, there's a non CGI shot of Worthington sandwiched between 2 effects shots, the difference is jarring. Like others have said, usually I hate the whining talkbackers, but this is leaving me with the same sense of disappointment as Phantom Menace. Sorry to be pessimistic dudes.
-
Curious how the Sneak Preview preview will look compared to the online footage.
-
and I'll probably watch it more before tomorrow. Quit whining, most of you people, and I include myself, are gonna see 16 minutes of it FOR FREE tomorrow anyways.
-
Like someone pissed in your breakfast cereal. I admit the CG looks bad, I'm not disagreeing. But some of you come off like you're truly offended. Get a grip.
-
I'm not going to dismiss this yet... I mean we all know that all of you people saying "fuck this movie" right now are going to go running to see it when it comes out, and so will i. But this really does look pretty errr.. standard... Almost bad for the stuff we have seen lately. Maybe this are old renders, don't know, and nobody is going to know until the movie comes out. But i think that they should have done better for the teaser after all the hype...
-
It looks a 1000 times better. I am sure on IMAX It's going to look even better.
-
...have no idea how fucking hard it is to do what they are doing. And on the scale they are doing it. My hats off to them. It's amazing. I can't wait to see this film.

expectations were heightened. maybe it's better this way.
-
Are some of you realy watching the same trailer that i have?, this thing is jaw dropping.

it is not supposed to be "just a movie", it's fuckin' 350 Millions US DOLLARS, not talking about additive P&A, and some formerly incredibly smart guy who took a huge huge bonerhead ("I'm the king of the World") and forgot to ask any talented guy : "do you believe this is good looking and finely executed ?". Guys at Fox lost their mind, will lose their jobs, and for all I loved in JC's career I'm sorry to say this is ugly as shit and not good CG at all. And no this universe does not look real and eyeballs blowing.
-
I never understood the worship the geek community piles on him. But at the same time, it's a teaser and everyone seems to be up in arms.

Which is totally awesome. Unhinged, creative fantasy. Why the hate? No, it's not photoreal, but it's badass, and that's good enough for me.

Maybe we can lower them a little now. It looks good but my eyeballs are still virgins. <p> I swear they used a Jumpback right in the middle of the trailer. At this point, it's pretty much a cliche to use a light tunnel effect to show any type of warp speed or mind transfer concept.
-
Like Jurassic Park...made 16 years ago. The T-Rex still looks real. Look at it chasing Jeff Goldblum. Don't tell me that the CGI in Avatar looks more real than that. Seriously. Honestly, I'm starting to wonder if this teaser trailer is just filled with unfinished, quick-render stuff. I just can't believe that someone like Cameron could possibly think this looks realistic. But hey, maybe the secret is that it DOES take place in a videogame world and we don't find that out until the end...kind of like a Sixth Sense deal. Or maybe it's all in this paralyzed guy's mind and it isn't real. Please, tell me it's a videogame world and that Cameron doesn't really think this looks photo-real.

District 9 was photo-real or at least as close as I've ever seen. This looks like a Peter Jackson flick and mind you - I'm only criticizing the CGI. I'm sure the story will be tops, but first impressions are key IMO especially when Cameron comes out of his mouth with all that "game changer" yang yang.

This is a Jim Cameron film. As Jimm would say himself, "Fuck you or get out of the way" amen
-
I think it just has too much hype. There's nothing "wrong" per se, but the CGI is hardly mind-blowing. Hell, it's pretty cartoony. The Na'vi look very 2 dimensional. Nowhere NEAR Gollum or even Jar Jar Binks! It could be a color problem like we saw with the first Hulk. Overall it looks cool, but it looks like a kid's fantasy adventure movie Like The Neverending Story or something, but in an odd mash-up with Aliens. This trailer definitely lowered my expectations significantly.

he said, don't expect a Titanic or anything truly groundbreaking. I haven't read the script, but the success or failure will hinge on the story: Engaging characters, plot, etc. Look at King Kong and Sup Returns. People would have been a lot more forgiving of the sometimes less than perfect CGI if the scripts had been better. As genre fans, we should want his to be good and succeed. If it flops it will mean less cool fantasy/sci fi movies. Isn't that the whole reason we're here? Isn't this the kind of fantastical stuff that gets up excited? I'm neither a hater or apologist. I just want a cool freakin movie experience. Isn't THAT the whole idea??
-
...looks like they realized that wasn't realistic for this movie so they tried to make the real look CG
-
The stills we've seen up until now haven't been all that great and this trailer was just ok. Reserving judgement until I see the movie, but after seeing this I will be going in with much lowered expectations.

Doesn't mean it'll be a bad movie, but this isn't a Star Wars type leap ahead in special effects.

haha thats funny. they must need something else
-
I can't fucking stand CGI heavy movies. Guillermo Del Toro's creatures look way better than this.
-
why do u think they didnt show that shit earlier. seriously man ALiens looked way more real
-
From the Hottie and the Nottie and the Waking Up In Vegas video and Matrix nerd from Grandmas Boy?
-
You're the cock.
-
oh god i can not see,i am blind aaarghghghg
-
to Cameron's movie trailers he jerks off then snorts coke and kills a hooker
-
AMEN! Just saying District 9 looked more realistic!
-
I'm not sure about this anymore.
-
It looks just like I knew it would. Green screen nonsense. FX driven shots that I could care less about. Creature designs that suck. I mean they are tall blue elves with very human features.Big fucking deal. And obviously this is going to be a story about a marine going native and helping the indians from the white devils trying to put them in reservations so later than can build casinos!
-
Was over 10 years ago. Man I'm tired of all these reboots.
-
I would consider myself a big Cameron fan so I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt – but my immediate reaction is this looks pretty bad (as in had I seen this trailer and not known it was Cameron I wouldn’t think it would be something I’d need to see in the theater). The ending kiss scene looks straight out of some cheeseball video game cut scene. It makes me wonder if everybody n this board who are saying, wow revolutionary, great! Are the same people who still think the new Star Wars trilogy is good. Just seeing this makes me think you’ll see Watchmen like performance – a big first weekend bump from the sci-fi geeks than a big drop-off from people who think it’s just another Beowulf-ish experiment.

...dumb fuck.
-
Guys you do not know what you are in for. Cameron, as opposed to McG, Bay, etc. is a real filmmaker. He knows how to build suspense and immerse you in a world. Gollum wasn't "photo real" either, but you cared about his performance. This movie in 3d on a big screen will astonish. Bless you Cameron for taking the time to make something amazing and original.
-
Sigourney was the voice of the computer.
-
Sigourney is the crazy lady that lives in the jungle with blue apes.
-
Sigourney was the mech technician.
-
Which is ironic seeing as though District 9 is blowing Avatar away. If you don't have the capability, technology, and vision, to convincingly portray an alien world in CGI, don't do it. They could have used real rainforest here on Earth for Pandora, look at all 3 Jurassic Park movies, those fight scenes in the jungle looked superb.
-
I know they're fluid in motion etc, etc but they do look a little bit camp!
-
Sigourney was the lady that reads off what the computer is saying.

300 million? This is the kinda shit destroying the film industry
by ELI_ROTH_SWALLOWS_SEMEN
Good work James!!! What do you give a fuck anyway? You have your fucking underwater docs to fall back on.
-
It never will be. There needs to be some disconnect in your mind from the fact that you are watching a CG special effect. You've never seen an 8 foot tall hippie alien. How the hell do you know how it looks? Also, at an expense of $240 million, don't you think they have just about the best technology/artists money can buy these days?
-
coz the images look like a Japanese cartoon. like those mechs
-
..just having a discussion, who insists the whole film is CGI.I thought the scenes such as Worthington in the wheelcahir etc were 100% human actors,he says they are CGI rendered.
-
...Your hate never suprises me but even i am a little suprised by the hate for this. The film looks amazing and its only because of the sweeping camera shots and all the alien stuff that your brain knows must be fake and thats why it doesn't look real (by the way, how do you know alien worlds and aliens themselves don't look and move exactly like in this teaser?). distric 9 looked so good due to the earth setting, on'y the aliens and the hazy ship in the background was cgi and thats a lot easier for your brain to accept, also the documentary style as oppose to sweeping impossible camera shots like in Avatar certainly help your brain to accept it more. AVATAR will blow everyone away at the cinema, gauranteed.
-
I do like some of the Roger Dean-ish planetscapes. But in HD it really does look like World of Warcraft cut scenes. Only bluer.
-
Which is fine by my standards. You're a bunch of fags.

Sigourney is the gatekeeper. Are you the keymaster?

Just consider that a large portion of the CGI in this trailer
by YackBacker
Is being shown in slow-motion. That may be screwing with your perception of it as well.
-
That's what impression I'm getting here.
-
nothing too exciting on show. I still think the film will be awesome but I don't think they have enough material at this point to deliver a great trailer, which is I guess why this is billed as a teaser All the CG army stuff and fantasy creatures etc is such a well worn path now, its just no impressive even though this looks very well done and it reminds one of the bad taste left by the prequels.
-
Sigourney was Alvy's Date Outside Theatre. Ok I'm done.
-
and that was 4 years ago
-
Anyone else getting the feeling AVATAR is going to be a mega-bomb? I know I am.
-
must just fuck off and DIE
-
...scenes as well or better than anyone...you find yourself tensing up even if you don't ant to...
-
pathetic
-
Sad. Nice execution by the artists involved, however no hint of originality whatsoever. It's late 80's Sci-Fi designs ported to 21st century CG. Eye-candy for geeks mired in "Aliens" hardware worship.
-
I watched it 5 times so far. I truly love it! I am not sure about the navi, but once we get use to them it will be fine. as far the CGI concerned it is about the level of the Star Wars prequels and I think it is fine. CG in the star wars movies were never an issue to me (apart from some cheap looking bluescreen compositing) thinking about seeing it in IMAX 3D... all we can hope for. I personaly don't give a fuck if people like it or not it just make me sad we get film like this in every 10 year (yes) and people waste it on sensless hate. Good for you people (no, its not) For me, december cannot come fast enough
-
...came to mind: 'Ferngully' and 'preachy-humans-are-evil-environmental-message-guilt-trip-movie'. The aliens and some of the action looks fine, but you get a sense of what the story is going to be from the trailer, and I'm sensing...Ferngully II: Avatar.

Worthington in the wheelchair getting off the ship....
by ELI_ROTH_SWALLOWS_SEMEN
...looks absolutely CG. His face looks almost as bad as Merry and Pippin's pasted on faces while getting carried away at the end of FOTR.

Its not 100% CG, its a mix of live action and animation.
-
from the "Greetings. I live Pandora" trailer were real after all.

have u read at all the interview cameron gave to aicn during comicon? go to the part where he says that one of the movies bigchallenges is to make the audience immerse to these alien characters and their world. And from the screen previews he already did,he witnessed that at first the audience had difficulty to think of the aliens as alive and not fake, not CG images.but quickly they got immersed into the movie, their mind let accept the photorealistic creatures as something real,as real as the real life actors of the movie.its all in the mind. <P>In other words, your brain cant comprehend the image of the navi alien, because it hasnt seen a navi before,so it acknowledges as fake and as a result u get the impression that is cartoony. <P>BUT download the HD version and look the navi when its in the table.DONT look its head, look his feet, look his hnds, look his skin how interact with the light and how it looks compared to the real actors in the scne. <p>Now tell me does its cgi photorealism looks to u worse or even the same as those of TF2,GIJOE,D9 or even LOTR gollum? <p>shut your mouth until tomorrows preview.if this stuff looks great in a downsided, compressed video file,it will be amazin in the big screen.
-
Another thing, will people please realise that this is not Beowulf i.e. everything is cgi, AVATAR is like Sky Captain where the humans and some of the sets are all real and only the background, aliens, Pandora etc are cgi.
-

"we don't know what aliens or an alien world looks like....so who's to say it doesn't look like a Xbox 360 game?" That's pretty much the gist of it. I didn't want to hate this. I still am not passing judgment on the movie itself until I see it. I'm just going on what Cameron himself has been saying for the past 3 years. But so far this ain't all that...

<br>You've got to be kidding me. That was excellent CGI. The haters just don't suspend disbelief, so nothing looks real. I'll bet you the same people would have made the same complaints about ugly optical effects, were those the ones employed.</br> <br>As a person who actually knows a thing or two about CGI, and actually remembers what old CGI looks like, I can say that this is some excellent animation, and excellent rendering.</br> <br>The Problem we have here is that many of the talkbackers want the film to fail. So they nitpick. The reality is, most people won't nitpick. Most people will look at and just experience it.</br> <br>Anything done through special effects will look unreal if you look at it hard enough. Stop motion will give itself away through its jerkiness. Models by their scale of detail. Matte Paintings through their painted appearance. Optical composites through the matte lines, the generational degradation, and the problems with reflections.</br> <br>Everything unreal falls apart in a movie if you're looking to nitpick it. The best way to judge work is to relax, soak it in, and then judge. But that means losing control a little. However, you're judge an artform where absorption of that kind is part of the point.</br>
-
Right. All those portions were shot on live action sets. It goes CG when they head out into the jungle. (One exception being the shot where Worthington wheels himself out of the ship, clearly a CG background). <p> Have we made up now?
-
This doesn't seem like my type of movie. I could never hate on James Cameron after he dazzled me with Terminator 2 as a boy and made me literally weep in public during multiple showings of Titanic, but this just didn't excite me. But then, fantasy has never been my thing. If Harry gives it a positive review I'll give it a shot, but in all honesty... if I hadn't heard the hype or known who was directing I don't think I'd have finished watching the trailer. Good or bad, nothing could tarnish James Cameron in my eyes though. I applaud his experimentation.
-
seems to be the bane of CGI's existence. Where are dirty grainy seems to work better for CGI. crazy because it was such a huge deal in the early 90's to get dirty and grainy CGI. any thoughts?
-
Seriously. Somebody swings for the bleachers and you guys dump on them. What makes me sick is that the studios really do read these things and attach weight to what you idiots say and think. The images look much better on a big screen and in their proper context. Just wait.
-
I looked at the shot of the Navi on the table. That horribly retarded perspective with feet far too big to attempt to give the shot depth, and the doctors looking at a mark 3 feet behind the CG Navi's head. Yeah it looks like fucking ass. i'm not talking texture or lighting (that looks like shit as well) i'm speaking of placement of the character. sloppy fucking work.
-
anyone know?
-
i was not impressed by this trailer at all :( Hopefully tomorrows screening fixes my dissapointment.
-
ILM kicks WETA'S ass. Nuff' said. I do want to see the movie though.
-
I am not impressed with the CGI. I'm not saying the movie doesn't look mildly entertaining but c'mon JC! We've waited 12 years for you to make a real kick ass movie ala Aliens, T2 or True Lies. This looks like child's play with CGI characters that not only do not suspend any sort of disbelief, but are distracting and pull you out of the movie. Somebody tell JC to call Peter Jackson so he can teach him how to make realistic CGI characters. Where's Gollum when you need him?
-
through the leaves in the jungle... that's pretty exceptional CG there. Look at the details on the skin texture.
-
Some of the CGI is a bit wonky. But it's not awful.
-
why take someone elses name?
-
.....SO bored with CGI characters in movies now!
-
It LOOKS pretty good, but I still can't see myself getting too amped for the story, and I'm already finding quite an uncanny valley in my empathy for the Narnia Centaur-looking muhfugs. Still, though, I can say this is visually impressive. www.agenesisfound.com

My enthusiasm went from 10 to 0 so fast I got whiplash. The first 20 seconds are cool, and then the 'nav'i' show up. What was Cameron thinking?? "I want to make something bad-ass. I know, ten foot tall versions of the puppets from Dark Crystal, with a little bit of smurf thrown in!"
-
WETA is no competition.

...him saying "This is great". The emotion is real you can feel it. I'm so excited for tomorrow. In Cameron we trust.
-
try not to be blind of your hate.
-
No, actually. It looks jittery because they've slowed down a shot that was filmed normal speed, so they're duplicating some of the 24 frames in order to increase the length of the shot. It has nothing to do with the CG. It's the frame rate. I can't believe some of the people here. Sure, if you don't like the premise or the universe, that's fine. But to say it looks like a video game just makes it sound like you don't know what the fuck you're talking about. I've gone through this thing frame-by-frame, and the rendering and effects here are amazing. There's subtle stuff going on that can only be appreciated when you're actually watching it for extended periods of time (not to mention we don't even get the 3D here). Is it completely photo-real, indistinguishable to the eye? No. But it's still some of the most impressive and immersive effects work that's ever been done.

by YackBacker
When this comes out, they'll say "OMFG!" etc. I am not a huge Cameron fan, I think he's a maudlin storyteller, heavy-handed with the characterizations, etc. But this looks damn interesting. Of course, I'm not expecting eyeball fellatio, or whatever these people were praying for. It's just a movie... and this one is looking good.
-
You guys are two discernable gents. What's your overall opinion of this here trailer? (Unfortunately, I cannot view it while at work.)<P>On a side note, it looks like some of the girls from AIBN have come out to play. Keep your eyes on those underscore bitches.

You BitchTits are LOCO. I wish I could see ONE, just ONE fucking movie that you dickshits didn't rip a new one. Spazzes.
-
I don't think people want to see this thing fail. It's just that after the "Lord of the Rings" series, people have HIGH expectations for what CGI characters are supposed to look and 'feel" like. I don't want to "suspend disbelief"... I WANT TO BELIEVE that what I am seeing on the screen is REAL, not spent the whole movie trying to convince my brain that what I am seeing is real. This looks good, just not good enough. Like I said before, in my opinion, this really does look like "Delgo" to me. LOTR changed my perception of what CGI and CGI characters could be. Gollum felt like a living, breathing real creature. This just doesn't do it for me and after sing this trailer, Its changed my expectations for the film and my exitement for it. I love JC movies and am not a hater, just a realist.
-
The way the male avatar's ears and features kind of stretch back like a cat reacting with surprise or danger when faced with one of those flying things coming at him. Little details like that are becoming more obvious with each viewing. I think many of you will be surprised when you finally see it in 3d, with longer to gaze upon the characters in full resolution. I get the feeling this is going to spawn a generation of new furries and a renewed interest in consumer VR head-tracking, head mounted or retinal displays. Bring it on.
-
Ok, Harry I can understand: the man likes just about everything enthusiastically and there is that part of him that comes of as a shill (which I don't mind, btw). Quint seems like the only level headed person on this site (in regards to Avatar). How anyone can be excited by the terrible looking aliens is beyond me... They look like something out of a bad video game.

Someone in the other TB said it best. It's not REVOLUTION as we were told but it is EVOLUTION and I think a landmark film. well done, Mr. Cameron.
-
It's growing on me. Now that the hype balloon has been deflated.
-
Great, more shitty, cartoon-looking CGI. I was trying to be cautiously optimistic for this, but by God, this looks shit. Not feeling the face-fuckingness, here...I was going to go to the screening tomorrow based on this trailer, so looks like I won't be going. Anyone want a ticket to the AMC Lowes in NYC?
-
kinda hot
-
well, I hope it will, anyway.
-
Weird. The fx are cool but the lead guy is dull as door nails and I'm not really getting much human connection with this.
-
On first viewing the CG does look a little cartoonish. But when you go back and rewatch the detail is astonishing. It looks and feels like Cameron, awesome use of music. There's clearly a story and a sense of wonder involved. Some epic battle shots towards the end. Be excited.
-
I've long felt this movie was more hype than hip but now that I've experienced the aforementioned "eyefuckery" all I can say is...I feel so fucking vindicated. This CGI is the worst since Lucas. Good luck, Cameronfags. I'll save my money for Nolan's Inception.
-
This mostly resembles a 3D Miyazaki adventure, and that's A OK in my book! Will it be a mega hit? Probably too hardcore sci-fi for that, but if the story and 3D hold up, it could have humongous legs.
-
OMFG ITS SO FAKE,SO FAKE: <p>http://tinyurl.com/lt5rv2 a big fuck you to the haters
-
The more I watch this trailer, the more I want to see it. It has a THE MATRIX meets KING KONG (on the Island scenes) feel to it. I think it should do well this December, but I get the feeling a star would have sold the film better. Say Tom Cruise instead of Sam Worthington. Heck, Schwarzenegger would have been an awesome cripple and bad ass ape size AVATAR if he wasn't Governor. Welcome back JAMES CAMERON! This film looks epic and awesome. I know your next film is with ARNOLD, so why not remake WESTWORLD!?
-
Exactly.
-
I don't want it District 9 gritty - I want it beautiful: and it was - looking forward to tomorrow at real IMAX. The reason it doesn't look real is simple: it's not.
-
...no dialogue, ande the only story element you glean from this is that Sam Worthington uses his Avatar to walk again. No mention of what the conflict is, where they are, etc. And why did we have to see that monster jump out of the woods twice? And the aliens don't look especially tall or especially alien.
-
amazing detail,and incredible photorealism.
-
What was supposed to blow me away about this film? It looks interesting (story wise)... obviously CGI... lots of the production pieces seem to be influenced by his prior films. *shrug*
-
that's what we've been waiting for? a FINAL FANTASY reboot?
-
3 or 4 times. Massive box office winner. Avatar is for young boys what Titanic was for teenage girls.
-
Avatar isn't even out yet. It's also not the same kind of movie, other than the fact that both are science fiction - a very broad umbrella indeed.
-
This looks fucking kickass, Anthony Hopkins rules!
-
Will you haters yelling 'TANK!" please do the honorable thing and kill yourselves?
-
haters will switch sides. And by haters, I mean people who think it looks like Ferngully, not people who actually have valid criticisms along with their anticipation. If you think this looks like a cross between Ferngully and Beowolf, please watch it again and get your eyes checked. I think it just looks a *tiny* bit less than my wishes and dreams. Just a tad bit cartoony, but an obvious leap forward. VERY obvious. As in... if you don't see it, you're blind. Uncanny valley still hasn't been "escaped", but we are getting very, very close.
-
I was thinking the same thing... the whole 3D crap will be the selling point... the CGI looks like something out of 10,000 BC.

That... was underwhelming. I'm sure Cameron is saving all his money shots for the theatrical trailer, but still... I'm just not that impressed.

Wait there is no Wolfman trailer TB. <P> Actually we'll call it let down of the day #2 trailer talkback. Save for Anthony Hopkins.
-
screen grabs always look great- its cg in motion that fails..

Upon finally seeing the entire thing, I have to say: This is quite good. It has all the hallmarks of a Cameron Epic (including all the naysayers being proven wrong eventually)... I remember how everybody was beginning to trash titanic: Then, it won 11 oscars and made 1.8 billion world wide. Then people shut up...for a while at least. AND THEN...Suddenly, after titanic achieved so much more success (including album sales and video/dvd sales), People started trashing it again...calling it a 200 million chick flick, etc etc, and how it only made money 'cause of DiCaprio, blah blah blah. You people are pathetic. Trashing for trashing's sake. It's so much easier to trash this, than something like District 9. I have seen District 9, and it's a great film, but just because it cost a lot less and was a lot less anticipated, doesn't mean you should take it more seriously than an event film like Avatar. I bet you any money after District 9 becomes a classic within the next few months, you'll see the first nay sayers popping up talking about how silly it was...In fact, it's already started in the IMDB forums... Anyway, back to Avatar. While it isn't the second coming of christ (and I don't recall Cameron ever intending for it to be), it surely is imaginative, intriguing and broad in scope. I have confidence that this is going to be a great film. So you people sitting here on your fat, hairy undeserved asses, should shut the fuck up and stop crying like cretins, just because you are unimportant and have achieved nothing in your lives, besides chilling out on AICN along with your equally insipid pals. Cameron is in his position because he has achieved a lot of success in his life. I understand when people like you get angry at the likes of Shyamalan or Anderson, because it also pisses me off that idiots like them get funding for repeated failures in the past. But in this case, I must say, it's simply a case of idiotic mob hysteria.
-
i thought cameron understood this. i'd like to see him make a movie for $30 million. or, where do you suppose that other $320 went? marketing? cocaine and whores? are we sure he didn't just hire the team who is making the game to do the CGI for the film? i think i prefer the leaked trailer from yesterday. it looked less "cartoony."
-
Is that this is going to be a fairly straightforward story, similar to what someone said earlier- DANCES WITH WOLVES. There will be an element of the Vietnam war mixed in too (a military-industrial power being fended off by a native, low-tech people). Nothing I've seen here or have read makes me think this is a philosophically complex story, which is pretty much par for the Cameron course.<p> Visually, I like what I see. I think a lot of thought has gone into the designs and I am looking forward to them in full motion, without any "trailer-editing" fades and slow-motion gags. I think the trailer itself is a B- it shows off something new, but at the same time I agree that the CG *looks* bad in a few places. They would have been better off just showing 2 minutes of actual footage- maybe a battle or the waking of Sully's Avatar.<p> I've said above, I'm not a Cameron fanboy. I think he's a heavy-handed storyteller. He wants you to FUCKING laugh when he wants you to and CRY when he wants as well. Filmmaking is a form of emotional manipulation, but he is a real dick about it sometimes. But I am very interested in seeing this movie.
-
...the more I like it. But it's the N'avi's eyes whihc seem to be giving their CGness away to me.
-
Cool. I'm excited but not insanely so. After being thoroughly impressed with DISTRICT 9, I'm just curious to see what Cameron has in mind when it comes to aliens, world creation and so forth.
-
like used makeup and stuff. wouldve been more convincing

Say what you will about the movie, but the trailer really got people in the theater. i don't think the same thing is gonna happen here.

because you know that stuff like that doesn't exist. If there would be CGI cow with the same detail in the shot you couldn't tell if it was real or not.

Outstanding quality. I didn't even know I needed glasses a few months ago. Perhaps a percentage of people here have sight problems they're not aware of. Cannot wait for tomorrow to come.

Is the Box-Office Opinion. You all hated TRANSFORMERS 2, but people went out in Droves, You all hated SPEED RACER (not me) and it FLOPPED at the box-office. We the people vote with out dollars, and I pretty much GUARANTEE that AVATAR will be voted very high this year with those dollars. Loved the trailer! And Those who do not watch trailers before films come out, you are more disciplined people than I. I envy your skill. :-)
-
...is that it?!?
-
Took the time to register to say that this looks way too cartoony to be taken seriously. Not really excited at all to see this.
-
I don't give a shit if it's photorealistic or not. It looks great. We'll have to wait and see if it actually *is* great.
-
....but there's no doubt a lot of this is about as 'natural'-looking as this - http://www.dangerouslyasian.com/AvatarJarJar.jpg (remove any spaces that might show in that link there)>P>The fact is this thing WILL look fantastic in all it's 3D big screen glory....but in 2D, it's just got too much of a videogame CGI 'cut-scene' sheen to it, albeit a great one. I have a feeling I'll care more for the shoot-'em-ups than for the implausible 'inter-species' romance between 2 Jar Jar clones....

There was an interview where Cameron said it's the 3D that (supposedly) convinces your brain that it's real and not CG. So take the 2D teaser with a pinch of salt. Even in 2D after you've seen it a few times you start to notice the details. Although the Na'vi faces do look a little static to me. I was expecting the faces to be a bit more expressive? But hey it's barely 2 minutes of it, I'll be in the queue for it come December!

Looks like a blueman version of 'Last of the Mohicans' . I dont undersatnd if they wanted to create totoally cgi ' actors/creatures' why make them look so similar to humans, i dont see the point

I mean, would the audience really notice the difference between a 7-foot blue alien and a 8-foot blue alien? Outside of the ears (and tail), those blue creatures look just like those young European basketball centers that come to the NBA, all awkward and gangly. I'm sure there were at least a dozen Cameron could have gotten for the movie.
-
You're right, subtle ain't in the Cameron lexicon. And this is definitely a 'soldier going native' story. Cameron said he looked at 'Emerald Forest' and 'At Play in the Fields of the Lord' going into it. But at least we're getting a story. What was the story in 'Star Trek'? Or 'Terminator Salvation'? Cameron is a storyteller. Bay, Abrams and McG ain't.
-
i already mentioned the motion of the skin (essentially the texture of the cgi) when the navi is on the table.watch it,pay attention to how interacts with the light, how the shadow appear and disappear, make also a comparison of the real life actors in the same.now imagine that in the big screen, not in a hdtv or monitor.is it bad,one of the same, good or great?

I don't get it.. We've got the technology to create awesome photo realistic creatures and worlds never before seen, so why have we ended up with a slightly distorted humanoid blue bi-pedal creature? Was CGI even needed for these guys? Some basketballers and some prosthetics could've come close to this. The tiger stripes and the pointy ears kinda remind me of Star Trek where the budget limited them to only create alien races by adding prosthetics to human faces, or like when they updated the design of Godzilla because the old one looked like a guy in a suit... only to design a creature that looking like a guy in a slightly more expensive suit. Couldn't they at least have positioned the eyes in a different position? The CGI in District 9 was technically of lesser quality, but the designs at least felt alien and justified the CGI approach. Also why do the landscapes look like a floating version of the Blue Mountains in Australia? Glad the photo reference trip paid off for the matte painting team.. but for some reason I was expecting a truely otherworldly experience with unique plant life not just a hodge-podge ripoff of our own world. I mean what are the chances in this universe of finding life on a planet so similar to ours? Even on our own planet there are creatures and environments that are far more alien to us than this. The Abyss had AWESOME alien creatures. What happened? I hope tomorrow goes better, and I don't come away feeling like this is just an expensive sequel to Arthur and the Invisibles.
-
when the gunship flies past the floating mountains...check out the rockface detail!!
-
Certainly not on the level of genre-defining entertainment such as LotR and the original Star Wars that we were lead to believe. I'll still see it, obviously...as others have said, hopefully it'll look better in 3D. But this is a major letdown...also, notice Jake's Avatar's mouth doesn't even match his THREE WORDS of dialogue. Not a good sign...
-
His accent sound odd, like English may be his second language (and he just learned it for this movie). But Anthony was looking pretty bad ass. Almost wish Anthony was the Wolfman instead.
-
Shut the fuck up. You don't know what you're talking about. That's not an opinion, that's a fact. I'm not defending the film itself, I've only seen 26 minutes of it. But to say the effects are cartoony and horrible, it just makes you look foolish. Because they don't and you're wrong. The rendering on these creatures is quite amazing. They have pores, they have tear ducts, small little facial tics. Every little subtle piece of facial movement that we see in humans has been transferred here. The movement is quote incredible as well, although we don't have context for a lot of these scenes (the hospital scene looks spazzy, but that's only because the character is supposed to be groggy and tripping around, and the one piece of movement we see is of the avatar stumbling forward and catching himself on the glass). Say what you want about the content of the story, but to make idiotic statements that are clearly nothing more than exaggerated whining and bitching just makes it harder for this to be a place to actually dicuss film.

Fuck the naysayers - I've never been to Pandora in real life to see what a Na'Vi actually looks like so I'm sure as hell going to take James Cameron's word for it.
-
I thought the trailer was beautiful - truly breathtaking. I guess I can understand people not liking it but I don't get the hate - you're bashing it when you've seen two minutes of footage and not even in 3D. It seems as if some of you would only be satisfied if Cameron had actually somehow genetically engineered the Na'vi for real and filmed them instead.

Those other directors you mention are not storytellers, you're right. They're technicians, moving equipment around to make things go boom, etc.<p> I'm mostly excited by the fact that this isn't a remake, adaptation or some other rehash. That's why D-9 worked so well- it wasn't an established "property." I hope AVATAR is good. I don't need it to bring me to Nirvana. Just take me to someplace new and interesting for a couple of hours. Yes when Sam smiles - Totally awesome. The avatar in the tank and waking up etc - awesome. Creature in woods with "wet look" CGI - looks great! The bamboo looks great. Sam landing and wheeling off and looking around at beginning - TOTALLY CRAP CGI, looked like video game footage. When the aircraft flys in and you see CGI guys hanging off - again crappy CGI. Still waiting for last 10 seconds to load....
-
It's all ther ein the N'avi. Until I see their eyes. But eyes are tricky buggers to get right, in puppets or CG. The environment looks great, so far. But I don't think that the filmmakers should be relying on 3D too much for the effects to looks better or there's going to be a lot of annoyed 2D viewers who have no choice given their location or circumstances. I might get over the eyes when I see it in proper action/context as part of an emotionally compelling story. Oh, and Star Trek did have a story.

...at long last. So will Robert E. Howard's devotees, and Lovecraftians, and Terry Pratchett. The teaser looks great and I want to see it of course and I'll overlook the eco-message's apparent preachey-ness and the ferngully parallels, but throughout the reel I constantly flashed on the idea that at long-last some of Edgar Rice Burroughs' world, such as Pelucidar or the strange ape/human hybrids in lost cities in a mythical Africa can at last be realized on the screen in a convincing way. Maybe this is why the few recent efforts to create Burrough's martian world have been side-tracked; knowing that this new technology would make any earlier attempt forgettable and weak. How long before Rodriquez has one of these set-ups in his home digital movie studio? It's a given that every new technology in photo and film and video has always been propelled in its early days by conoisseurs whose tastes run toward the pornographic. There must be some amazing erotica being developed using this technique.
-
Thanks, I appreciate it. Judging from what we already know by the story, I'd say your take is probably about right. As a storyteller, Cameron is more of a by-the-numbers guy. But his technical prowess and knack for effective action sequences cannot be denied.<P>(I'm a little dismayed by the comments on the CGI quality - so much as been made about this, you'd think it would be the one thing they would absolutely nail down for a teaser trailer.)
-
Who the fuck are you to tell us whether or not something looks fake to us. I've just watched that trailer and it looks like the fucking CG cartoons I watch with my son on a Saturday morning. I don't care what you do or don't know about the technical whys and wherefores that went into this. I'm the fucking consumer and to me, it looks fake. It looks fake. It looks fucking fake.
-
Abrams is a TV director, a proficient one. But he has no cinematic talent. His shot selection in MI3 and Star Trek is sloppy as fuck.
-
It's ok that others feel differently than you. You're excited for the film and that's fine..but to cap on an overwhelming amount of people who are underwhelmed by the somewhat disappointing CGI (and it is NOT the best CGI to date no matter what you say), is both arrogant and narrow-minded. If it looks good enough for you and you'll enjoy the film, that's fine. But don't try and condescend to people who feel differently....there have simply been better rendered creatures than this. The planet itself looks good but the rendering on the Na'vi just doesn't quite live up to all the hype (which isn't necessarily Cameron's fault...most of the 'eyefuckery' crowd have themselves to blame for the frenzy). But seriously...don't be condescending assholes. It's beneath you.

True, it may look overly sharp and clean on a computer moniter, but it could look fantastic when it's blown up. Plus, it's going to be in 3D, so it's not fair, or even really possible to judge the look of the movie from this sample.
-
I'm amazed you folks are bitching about the CGI. Seriously, you don't know you're born! To my mind, the artistry involved here is so incredible that if you brought <insert your favourite classical artist> back from the dead and showed this to them, they would never paint again. Now, if you want to question the plot, fill your boots...

BLOW THIS AWAY.
-
and YackBacker and kwisatzhaderach, for that matter, is because District 9 has CG that was UNQUESTIONABLY more convincing, at a sliver of the budget. Cameron talked a big game, like he always does, and it inevitably led to disappointment. He deserves the backlash — End. O. Story.

Ok- from watching this trailer here's the story: Jake Sully is a disenchanted war veteran who gets a second chance to 'make a difference' by enlisting in a special program to infiltrate the Nav'i people on the planet Pandora and help turn the tide on a losing military conflict. Of course, once he meets the Navi up close and falls in love, he realizes that Everything He Knows Is Wrong and instead switches sides to help the natives turn back the imperialist marines and save the ecological beauty of Pandora. If that's basically it wow, that's incredibly cliche and stupid. Please tell me that other than the details there's more to Avatar than this because if not, wow I'm sad for JC. Because that's about the most obvious story one could tell. Like no kidding, war=wrong and natives=should be left alone.

But maybe this will all come together once one focuses on the story instead of the effects ... and why was there no Sigourny Weaver in this teaser ... and why do na'vi women bother with clothing (ah, its an american movie) .. As with any film, the story has the potential to sell the effects. D9 is a prime example of that principle. My top questions now are: Will the story go beyond the Manifest Destiny cliches evident in the trailer? And will the characters be worthy of our emotional investment? Cameron's never demonstrated much facility with nuance. Let's hope that's part of the paradigm shift here.
-
You are aware of how utterly fucking ridiculous your post is, right? Or I guess not...
-
This movie was meant to be seen in 3D. I know a lot of hyperbole is thrown around and many movies say that, but the colors and the way the shots are framed, it is all with 3d in mind. Its a VERY bright movie, so that when you put the glasses on, the tint will be just right. All I can say, is that seeing the footage on a big screen with 3D glasses on really did feel revolutionary, to the point that I was grinning like a 8 year old, and I cannot wait to see the whole movie. I think this is why Cameron is baiting everyone to see the free imax footage, because that is the only way to really prepare people for what a new experience will really be like. An original sci-fi movie with a story and believable characters in realistic 3d that for the first time actually makes you forget that you are watching a 3d movie. Isn't that what we all want? A new experience?
-
So much hate here. We need a Nolan circle jerk.

Actually, this looks pretty f..kin cool. I was affraid by the comments. I was worried by the comic-con buzkill. I was blown away by district 9. And you know what? Avatar look's awesome. It looks absolutely fuckin great. The CGI DID look like CGI in a number of scenes and I was dissapointed by the initial 'look' and feel but you know what? I watched that trailer a couple more times and the aliens look really, really good. I mean, I do get the fakey feeling about their shiny-ness but I'm over it already and NOW I see all this extra detail in them and the emotions they seem to be conveying is working on me. Really digging in particular the scene where the hot alien babe is crying and the bit where she is first revealed. I'm knowing she's animated but I'm sympathizing with her subconsciously and it makes me wanna watch more. It looks like a different kind of experience altgether. I'm kind of seeing this know as an animated movie that is transcending animation rather than a live action movie that has 'phot-real' effects work. All I'm saying is, it looks like a whole lot of fun and my eyeballs are starting to feel a bit emotional. Bring it on. Fuck the haters.

It just looks like another Star Wars cartoon : (
-
I don't want to oversell this, because too much hype is an enemy to ANY film, but I will say that my girlfriend and I were halfway through a discussion about the movie before either of us even THOUGHT to bring up the effects. Meaning, they were so seamlessly integrated into that world, that we kind of forgot we weren't looking at people in costume. I would also recommend going in completely spoiler-free. These TBs are treacherous as far as that goes, but the marketing dept. has done an exemplary, WALL*E-esque job of giving away precious little of the plot in the trailers.
-
For months I've read nothing but how much eyeball fucking Avatar was going to inflict. People (without seeing so much as a production shot) were harping that Avatar was going to be the "next Star Wars." Seriously? Terrible teaser. All I understand is that if you are in a wheelchair, you can turn into a blue alien. If that were the case, I wouldn't have spent my youth in physical therapy. <br> <br> Seriously though. I thought this was pretty weak looking aside from the battle sequences. I know that Cameron knows what he's doing but...well, he hasn't done a movie in like 15 years now, so maybe he, like the rest of his contemporaries, has lost his touch.

My eyeballs are still drowned in a creampie of awesomeness! If these visuals are accompanied by Cameron's typical solid storytelling this will be out-of-the-park greatness.

Some shots look pretty bad (only on a photo-real level), but many of the shots are indistinguishable from CGI. The chopper flying through the mountains looks damn flawless, the first few shots of the Navi's hands and feet, and some shots of the female Navi look great up close. (p) I agree some landscape shots are too bright and painting light, hopefully that will be changed, or different in the theater. Also some of the Navi's face look a little off, as well as the creatures look good but not photo-real. But seriously, anyone saying this looks like an XBOX game, please point me to that game.
-
with a giant dildo on ur head. Cameron is interviewing for a job at the theater, basically, when he released a trailer. He has a good resume, but all you see is a big dong rendered in CG plastered on his head. Don't know where I'm going with this, got really stoned before the trailer... <p> BTW getting high helps! AVATAR, fucking your eyeballs "if your high" in 2009!!!! <p> Seriously though I went full screen w/the frenchy trailer while smoked out and it was more-epic-er
-
That's what it looks like. Sorry but that's the truth. I'm sure it's entertaining, but "visionary" seems overly generous.
-
The trailer definitely had the feel of a Star Wars prequel. But alas, the hype machine will continue to churn and salavate over this BS.

Sometimes a rant is necessary, so could people on here stop their whining for just a moment to consider a few of these points:<br><br>1) First of all, out of all the people above hurling their pathetic abuse, it might even be an understatement to say that 90% will still watch the movie in the cinema, thereby defining themselves as hypocrites. The opinion of a hypocrite is worth less than zero, so do the rest of us a favour and keep it to yourself.<br><br>For the other 10% who WON'T watch this movie, well done! You have the courage of your convictions. Unfortunately, you've decided to base your opinion of a 180 minute movie on 2 minutes of footage. That is simply D-U-M-B. It is not possible, logically, empirically, hell even linguistically, to form a valid opinion at this stage, therefore you are making a decision not to see this movie based primarily on your own prejudices. The opinion of prejudiced people is worth even less than that of hypocrites, so again move along, please.<br><br>Now, onto the footage itself...<br><br>3) Let's just stop this nonsense right now that 360 game somehow have better graphics, ok? I like my games, but to suggest that ANY game is even close to that is simply making a stupid point to fit in with the other haters. Somebody with more computer skills than me PLEASE put up a picture of a Na-vi from that trailer (Zoe Saldana one crying over her fallen colleague lit by flames would be a good one) next to a troll from WoW (closest match I can think of off the top of my head) and try telling me the troll looks more "real" while keeping a straight face...<br><br>4) For anyone saying it doesn't look "photo real", first of all what the fuck is "photo real" really, beyond a nice buzz word for effects companies etc to use and secondly hands up anyone here who's ever seen a photo of a 10ft tall blue alien with smooth, poreless skin and bioluminescent markings?<br><br>5) Of course, Cameron has already fooled half of you once. Remember the still a few weeks back of the avatar in the tank with Worthington next to it? Go back on that talkback and count the number of times people said "puppet". Guess what? It's CGI! If people are looking at a computer generated image and HONESTLY believe they are looking at a real, on set, three dimensional object, wouldn't you say that is as good a definition as any of "photo real"?<br><br>6) While we're on the subject of 10ft tall blue aliens and CGI, is there honestly anyone out there that REALLY thinks you can create something like that any way other than CGI? Of course not! That means you KNOW already that what you are looking at is computer generated and therefore your eyes are able to perceive this fact. So what? As someone above already said, Gollum was CGI as well. We all knew it and could tell with the simplest of visual inspections, but the story, dialogue and especially Andy Serkis' performance were strong enough that it didn't matter. Do you think it might just be possible to afford this film a chance to prove itself in similar fashion?<br><br>7) On the whole story/script/performance side of things, we must remain in the dark until the film is released, naturally. However, judging just on the treatment (yes, I know it's been changed considerably since then), I feel that there is a strong story behind this film. Furthermore, Cameron has a proven track record of being able to get strong, believable performances from actors (Ripley, SC, pretty much the entire cast of the Abyss). Maybe not Oscar winning, grandstanding performances, but you always believe that the character is a real person, especially with strong female characters and military personnel, which - guess what? - this film is full of. Sure, Cameron is as guilty as any writer of the odd clunking line of dialogue (and not just in Titanic), but if people hated every movie that had the odd bad line then they would hate everything. Hang on a minute...<br><br>People are entitled to their opinions, but to form their opinion of this film based just on this teaser is stupid. I'm more than happy to form my opinion at the correct time: on December 16th, right around the time the end credits start to roll
-
As soon as Harry declares it golden.

Yes it looks like a videogame environment but it was always going to, it's what Cameron wanted.

the opinions aren't on the film, yanni, they are on the trailer
by ironic_name
-
Okay, I can understand that. But at the same time, is it fair to compare a film that was going for docu-style, gritty realism, to a film that is trying to achieve an entirely different aesthetic all together? Avatar is supposed to be an exaggerated fantasy sci-fi film, and as such the look is a little more glossy and "cartoony", if you will. I'm merely commenting on people saying it looks like a video game when it clearly doesn't. The filmmakers have created a planet from top to bottom, from the plant life and ecosystem to the composition of the atmosphere. The characters are clearly "true" to the environment that has been created for them. Light penetrates the outer layer of skin, they sweat and have pores. They're expressive in the same way humans are. True, District 9 feels more real to our world because it's SUPPOSED TO. The aliens and creatures in Avatar feel true to their world, which is foreign to ours. I understand if people don't like it, but to say it looks like a video game or like any other effects work, that's simply not true.
-
I'm conflicted. Read all the comments here...that trailer, despite the sometimes dubious CG was pretty damn good. I will agree with those that say that if this weren't a Cameron film I wouldn't see it, but I will say it was a good trailer. Hopefully it looks incredible in 3D on a giant screen. Time will tell. Sucks I don't have tickets for tomorrow...

I HAD to go because they showed Leo and Kate on the ass end of the ship going straight into the Atlantic. Straight up cliffhanger jeopardy 101 right out of silent movies.
-
why would it have a tail?
-
The Matrix was to The Phantom Menace. I had no expectations for TPH or D9, and they blew their counterpart out of the water in story, effects, longevity.
-
Your meltdown was more entertaining that the clip. Speaking of which, was that footage just a collection of cutscenes or actual videogame play?
-
It's that the CGI is total crap. It could be pitch black the entire movie, and the CGI would still suck. And yet, The Wolfman, with like an eight of the budget, doesn't look nearly as fake. This is actually the professional style in recent years: directors like calling attention to the CGI, in an attempt to "wow" people with the wizardry of said CGI. "Photo-real" my fat dino-molesting ass...
-
As long as the plot is good. I'm a big fan of D9, but I can't overlook the plot holes (I know, they have been discussed to death here). Effects alone do not a classic make.
-
Epic post. Congrats.
-
No expectations for the Matrix or D9
-
You're wasting your breath man. It looks cartoony. It just does. We're not all lying to ourselves because we have it out for James Cameron or some shit. In fact, I think it's the opposite, if anything. Most of us are eagerly anticipating this film. Still. Now, that said, IT LOOKS FUCKING CARTOONY. Quit saying it doesn't. The fact is, it does, and we're all more than fucking entitled to think that. Your justifications are bunk. I know damn well there's no such thing as a six-and-a-half-foot shrimp alien, but that didn't stop them from looking real in District 9. WE'VE SEEN BETTER CG THAN THIS. That's what people are griping about. Now, the fact that it looks cartoony doesn't mean it's going to be a bad film. Or even an ugly film. The color palette is impressive, and the look of the film is GORGEOUS. It just, also, looks fake. That is all.
-
No expectations for the Matrix or D9
-
Look a-holes. We all love James Cameron and we are always rooting for the motherf*cker, but this shit is underwhelming as hell. As soon as Worthington shows up in his wheelchair on Pandora - the tomatoes start flying. Why? Because the trained eye can tell that shit is Episode One meets Matrix Revolutions. Blame my eye. Frankly, my stupid cat looks more alien than a na'vi. He looks more "photo-real" lol. When the movie comes out and we all say "meh with the CGI, but great everything else" so be it! Tell us we were wrong then. Until then - backlash. Severe backlash for talking the big game and not delivering something discerning cinephiles have been desperately desiring for decades. Deal with it JC sycophants and easily pleased, pointy transformer loving bitches.
-
i'm sorry. it's not going to change the world but fuck that was fucking cool. that grin when worthington sees his avatar is pure cameron. yes!

I didn't get much of an impression from Sam Worthington until now. I can see now why people say he's good.

Watching this on my PC monitor just wasn't cutting it for me, so I downloaded the 1080P file, and streamed it to my home theater in the living room via PS3 Media Server. Holy shit. I watched it like 4 or 5 times and my eyes and ears burn from the amazing. I may have to drive to Vancouver to see this on an IMAX screen before Christmas.
-
People are SUPPOSED to form an opinion based on the teaser...that's what the teaser is for, to get people to WANT to see the movie. If people were excited about this thing, and the teaser dispelled that excitement, that's ass-backwards. Sigh...and as always, the apologists' excuses get lamer and less cohesive. BTW, every time a trailer for a film has sucked, and the apologists screamed, "WAIT UNTIL THE MOVIE COMES OUT", the film in question has always sucked. ALWAYS. So this doesn't look to good right now...
-

-

-
I'm going to wait until I see this on the big screen before I pass judgement but I think as a tease the trailer works rather well. I think it's important to consider that, in watching a trailer on your computer monitor, you're seeing out of context footage in way that it was not designed to be seen. Roll on tomorrow when I can see more footage in Edinburgh :-)
-
And I specifically warned the Avatar fanboys about setting up expectations this movie was going to blow everyone's minds, solve the energy crisis, and bring peace to the Middle East. <p> Me, I have no expectations for this flick, I not only find Cameron overrated, I outright despise some of his films, but I'll probably be there opening week, I'm a big fan of digital 3D, and believe it is the future of video presentation-mark my words-and my guess is that's what Cameron's really attempting here, to be the first filmmaker to really get 3D 'right' so that skeptics stop brushing it off as a fad or a gimmick.

Fanboy whining aside...and is always expected ... the trailer looks great. Cameron's strength is bringing strong ( if soap opera-ish) character to his films ... here's hoping this will be no different. And also kudos for having trailer music that accents the trailer, instead of the stock heavy drums and choir.
-
So much rage at people who disagree with you. Kind of sad really. Ah well....to each their own. By the way, are you grumpy because you can't get the taste of your dad's erection out of your mouth? Or just the inner realization you're a befuddled sheep? Enquiring minds want to know!

Also, Cameron has got at least one Academy Award nominated performance form Sigourney Weaver.
-
goodnight!

Have you seen it on a big screen with 3d glasses on? Oh, you're going by seeing it on a computer screen. Fair enough. Yes the trailer is underwhelming. There is no hint of story, or dialogue or character, so nitpicking the effects is all we can do. Let's see what people say tomorrow...
-
Yes. Does it live up to the hype? Certainly not.
-
I know the Na'vi are based on Native Americans, but do they have to LOOK like Native Americans? Similar "hair", similar war-paint, similar clothing and technology. Yep, that's real "alien", real "visionary"...if ever we needed an "eye-roll" icon on AICN, it's now.

WELL THAT WAS FUCKING DISAPPOINTING, THIS WILL BOMB…..
by CarlThorMark1978
Seriously, that was supposed to be PHOTOREALISTIC CGI?!?<br> <br>Firstly, the Na’vi look really fucking retarded. Secondly, despite my dislike of District 9, the Rock Lobsters looked great and that’s because they were being rendered against real backgrounds so the animators had to match them to environment conditions such as lighting. The problem with Avatar is that almost all the environments are fully CGI so there is nothing for the animators to work with in terms of reference which is why it really does look like cut scenes from a videogame. Thirdly, it truly looked like fucking DANCES WITH ALIENS IN OUTER SPACE and Cameron is badly mistaken if he thinks that an Aliens/Titanic crossover is going to do repeated business.<br> <br>Finally, I seriously think that this movie is going to fucking crash and burn. There is just NOTHING here that we haven’t seen before and we all know that Cameron isn’t any sort of great writer so I’m predicting that test screenings will get this pushed back to next summer because I sure as fuck don’t see this pulling in the bank of Titanic. It will be lucky to get back it’s production and marketing costs.<br> <br>What we have with Avatar is another Phantom Menace. A movie made by Director who’s spent way to much time away from the camera and has fallen in love with his CGI toys. Cameron really thinks that it’s justifiable to build 3D theatres across the country and charge people $20 to $25 a pop just for the so called “privilege” of seeing more shit put out by increasingly out of touch Directors like himself, Robert Zememkis, Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson?<br> <br>At this rate movie theatres will become a novelty luxury for those who can only afford it while the rest of us stay at home and either download or wait for the DVD. I weep for the future of cinema.
-
and thinking, "wow, is this how far CG has come nowadays?"<p> Then I saw the blue aliens.<p> Anyways, I'll probably go and see this. Not for the effects, but for the story.

compared to the blue aliens. When everything else is CG and only the humans are not, it makes the humans look fake. My eyeballs will have to accept the fact that they will remain virgins even when December comes. Visual wise, it's not what it's all hyped to be. The easier CG stuff, the inanimate stuff like the flying ships and vehicles look unrealistic when compared to what we've seen achieved in other movies. What is shown in the trailer is GI Joe standard. They should be able to do better than that. The animals and creatures look better. What makes it look weird is the colors. The colors that they put on these living beings aren't natural colors that we are used to see on earth, it makes them look fake. But story wise, from what little they showed ,it looks like a great adventure movie. I can see it make a ton of money from the amount of toys it will sell.
-
because if they do then i know what will happen in the movie!
-
..Jurassic Park?
-
It didn't quite grab me by the balls like I thought it would. I'll wait for the full trailer before I make my decision though.
-
What kind of name is that? Sounds like a porno name kind of.
-
The reason they don't get it, is because they have no imagination. They're completely incapable of going outside the box and draw themselves into an imaginary world. Everything has to be given to them, and right or wrong just about everything has with the increasing advancement in video games and subjecting it to those that suffer from ADD and hocked up on energy drinks. (With much apologies to my wife's nephew.)
-
Name a film with better CGI, then, and reasons why...<br><br>I get that people are excited about D9 - can't wait to see it myself -, but the comparison is unfair. D9 is taking a world we know (slums of Joburg) and inserting CGI elements into it. They are able to use dust, mist and all manner of tricks and MORE IMPORTANTLY, are able to tweak lighting etc to perfectly match the REAL footage over which the CGI is placed. Furthermore, I am under the impression that the D9 aliens have little, if any, in the way of recogniseable human emotions, at least facially.<br><br>This, on the other hand, is an entire world created in CGI, meaning there is no "real world" element to allow your eyes to, effectively, trick themselves. Furthermore, we are talking about CGI creatures with essentially human faces, who are giving a performance, not some shellfish faced obvious alien.<br><br>In my opinion, the ONLY frame of reference we have to judge these characters is Gollum and, as I said, without seeing the entire performance it is STILL an unfair comparison. If people dislike the WORLD, or some of the more obviously "animal" creatures, maybe I might listen a bit more attentively, but the Na'vi simply have no comparison in film to date.
-
The release date is locked to December 18th. It's all or nothing now…

Just figured it out. It's those giant fucking irises they have that are making my brain register "CARTOON."
-
a point and a nod to you my friend. also it's in the eyes. yeah all the jokes about eyeball fucking. but my main concern was is it going to be like soulless eyes you would see ala beowolf? or is it going to convey some very subtle emotions. and i believe it does.

For all the folks saying the aliens don't look real how many real aliens have you see for comparison? I'd be interested to know.

A movie with better CG? King Kong (not a great movie but the island was better realized than this). 30 Days of Night was largely CG and looked cooler (while also not a great film from a narrative standpoint). Sunshine was also largely CG and looked so much more vastly amazing on a visceral level than this.

TO ALL THE HATERS, READ THIS (MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY):
by --- Emperor ---
"Hopefully by now you've been able to see the Avatar trailer, despite the technical problems that seem to now be required when it comes to any Avatar-related event. Whether you managed to get through to Apple's high-res versions or watched it through our embed, you've at least got an idea of what James Cameron is going for in the movie he says will change the world. So what did you think? For me, the trailer sucks. Having seen 25 minutes of the film at Comic Con, I was able to piece together which footage came from which seen, and hazard a guess at what the hell was going on when blue people rode on the backs of dragons and wielded spears at one another. But for the people who have never seen footage of the film before-- which is a whole lot of people-- the trailer seems needlessly disorienting and vague. Why not a single word of dialogue? Why not even an indication of the plot, beyond the basic plot description "Sam Worthington lives inside his avatar and runs around an alien planet." Why only show your hand halfway? I get that they're trying to follow up on the promises that Avatar looks like nothing ever has, and would rather show off as many flashy scenes as possible rather than ease you into this world. But the Quicktime format is so limiting, especially for a 3D movie, that the impact of all the CGI wizardry is muted anyway. Already people are complaining that Sam Worthington's Avatar doesn't look realistic, that the blue skin looks fake, because they haven't had enough time to see it move like a human, hear it talk, or see it respond to its world. Having seen it in Hall H, I promise it works. It just needs time to settle in, and just by showing one complete scene at Comic Con, they sold the effect entirely. Cutting together all the random scenes in the trailer just makes you more disoriented. But even if you can't show off your technology in a trailer, you can at least hint at the story, which I wrote from Comic Con was the most exciting part of the movie. This isn't just a big-budget spectacle about people running around in space. It's a deeply felt, mythic story, the kind that Cameron has proved time and time again he's great at telling. Even if the Na'vi will take some getting used to, the hero's journey is an instantly recognizable story, and the hook that will get people to take a chance on this strange sci-fi. The footage shown at Avatar Day should definitely get that across, but I'm worried that the word online will remain that the CGI looks weird and fake. My best hope is that, after Avatar Day, Fox releases just a bit of a complete scene online, giving the rest of the world a chance to see these characters with more context, and understand that, at heart, it's a story as old as the written word. This trailer, for all its visual magic, just wasn't capable of getting that across. " Taken from http://www.cinemablend.com/new/The-Avatar-Trailer-Sucks-But-Don-t-Give-Up-Hope-14448. html

Until I read a copy of Cinefex, I didn't realize that Pitt's head was entirely CGI up to the point where he's "young" (old) enough to join the tugboat crew. What's more astonishing is how Pitt and Blanchett were "de-aged" to teenage years.<p> That's really going to be the movie that "changed it all" when we look back from the age of synthespians...
-
God Bless James Cameron. Now, come on Steven, Peter and Robert the guantlet is throw. Pick it up.
-
All I get is the Questionmarkbusters logo
-
Why no one is really going bonkers over the trailer is because compared to LOTR and King Kong it just isn't THAT MUCH better. Such you could say, the rock face or the pours on the leafs look SO much better...but who gives a fuck about that? <P> Also since Titanic Peter Jackson directed all three LOTR, Kong and has another movie coming out this summer.....I didn't see a 10 year plus break anywhere in there did you?
-
As I had expected. Love Cameron's films, but I have to agree with the folks who have observed that the set/ship design seems about mid-90s... Also, after watching the trailer a few times I popped LOTR: Return of the King into the DVD player, and I've gotta say I don't see the much-hyped, game-changing revolution in digital effects. It integrates the real & CGI elements only just about as well, though I do have to say that the CG environments are very pretty and will probably look good on the big screen. All in all: Looks like a cool flick, but not a life-changer. Coming from a guy who was 14 years old when Star Wars (the grand-daddy of game-changers) premiered in 1977: "I know game-changers and you, sir, are no game-changer."
-
It teased. Nobody said the first trailer would sodomize your eyeballs. I'm glad that they decided to ease people into the world with something that doesn't give away every money-shot in the movie. It pulls people back from whatever expectations they were dreaming up and sets the tone for what was actually created. I'm willing to bet the next trailer will be more flashy now that people know what the world looks like. Stop complaining like Cameron took some movie you grew up with and pissed cgi all over it.
-
I cant believe that anyone can say that this trailer sucked or that this movie will suck. This trailer is clearly amazing and nothing short of that. I know I'm talking to a brick wall in saying this because you all will hate it anyway. I am really looking forward to this movie and everyone on here needs to lighten up and take it for what it is... a movie.
-
Fucking learn how to make paragraphs you fucking 5 year old.
-
just my first impression...like blending Halo with Everquest
-
Three films I own and like and all good effects. The most valid comparison is, obviously, Kong, but again it's the problem of comparing a 180 minute (or 210 for the extended cut) movie to a two minute trailer. Once the full movie is out, I would be interested to know if your opinion is still the same.<br><br>30 Days of Night is a very poor comparison in my opinion. The CGI there (which was NOWHERE NEAR as extensive as you are making it out to be) was tweaking the facial features of actual, on set actors being actually filmed. Again, if you have real elements your eye can relate to, it goes a long way to masking CGI (in that film highly successfully). This is 100% CGI based on motion capture.<br><br>As for Sunshine, please show me the fully CGI character in that film? Most of that film was a (good) set with the odd CGI flourish. The only major CGI was the big bomb room thing and the sun itself. Again not really a valid comparison.
-
Are hardly fucked, but that being said it looks quite impressive, although I am hoping the CGI characters wind up looking better, because they don't look very real to me. I will be seeing this, no doubt.
-
...to see it on the pseudo-IMAX screen. Iv'e got two tickets, but I really don't care enough right now to make the trip. The tailer's cool enough I suppose, but not enough to warrant a trip to the theater.
-
The similarities with Lucas and his later SW ventures appear staggering.... Guess the target audience are +25 males living in their mothers basement!
-
Actually Brad Pitt isn't real at all, he is just a walking computer effect!
-
The CGI looks horrible.... it reminds me of the second matrix movie where neo fights the mister smiths in the courtyard after meeting with the oracle, they may as-well have put a cgi pac-man in that seen. not really impressed but im sure it will have losts of distracting explosions to take peoples minds of the lack of story or good effects.
-
At least Cameron's next film will be real with a movie star like SCHWARZENEGGER.
-
Haters/lovers need to get a life.......do you not realize that you are arguing a moot argument? No matter who you are, or how cool your mom says you are at the end of the day we are all posting on nerd central's web site. We all have about the same amount of life we need to get.
-
go to ANY other site..and watch it in 3 secons with no broken links or embed problems..serioulsy..epic eyeballfucking failure
-
To be fair teasers are just meant to tease. That's why no mention of the story.
-
can whip an avatar's ass... and no mention of it here yet for some reason. It's on Yahoo movies. Me likey.
-
Is that the female alien is also an avatar, being controlled by another DUDE! Then Jake Sully realizes maybe that's OK and it gets all Brokeback Planet.
-
but in a people in a rubber suit fake. then it clicked for me. it was rubbery. get it people. my god. let it soak in man. the movements had a gravity and weight to it. it didn't look at all like pixels floating in space trying to fake physics. let happen man. get your cherries popped.
-
Face it fanboys, this movie was made for the Titanic audience. This is not Aliens this is Last of the Mohicans. And it's going to make a billion or two.
-
Jaw droppingly AWFUL!!!
-
It is funny to me that people talk about the hype for this film... there is certainly a lot of fan anticipation, but there has been very little hype per se until last months Comic-Con. Cameron has been his usual secretive self and the studio has released very little in the way of promotional material. I have seen very few magazine covers, posters or Entertainment Tonight type set visits for Avatar. In fact, for a film of this size there has been remarkably little hype. However it looks like the Fox marketing and promotions juggernaut is just gearing up with the special IMAX screenings and so on. So from this point onwards, yes, there will be marketing/promotions/hype galore. <P> As for the CGI debate, my feeling is that they did a pretty good job when you account for the volume of CG effects in this film. Someone mentioned District 9 and the great effects. They are right IMO, the CG work in D9 is utterly fantastic (and Oscar worthy with any luck), but much of that film was “only” character mo-cap and rendering with some mother ship and CG helicopter shots and some digital mattes of Johannesburg now and then. Avatar has 100% alien CGI environments and characters... the more you have to create, the more computer resources you need to balance to bring the film in as close to on time and on budget as possible, despite the budget size. However one thing that D9 does do well that most SF films do not is to incorporate the “bad” shot into the effects. To my eye, too often CG shots are too pretty and smack of the “money shot” to try and blow the audience’s socks off. In D9 there quite a few shots were the camera was shaking… or the racked focus and framing was a bit off which helped sell the realism. Finally, one of the great things CGI can do is to create places, things and situations that simply can’t exist… and that is also the Achilles heel of the technology; when I look at the Na’vi sitting up in the hospital bed, it looks strange because my brain knows that there is no way that is real – it can’t be just an actor in a blue suit. The skin creases in the blue feet may look totally believable, but subconsciously, you know it can’t be. I think it is known as the “Uncanny Valley” effect. <P> All in all I think this will do well, despite what the naysayers argue. It has Cameron’s name on the project and there are space marines for the boys and a cute alien love story for the girls. The only demo Cameron in not reaching this time around it the 50+ viewer… even my Grandmother went to see Titanic. Cameron always knows how to put on a show and this teaser looks interesting enough to get me in the theatre, unless the critics and word of mouth turn out to be horrible closer to the release date. Time will tell. <P> That is my 2 cents.
-
the hype almost had me going. What a fucking turd. It kind of reminded me of SpaceJam with its shitty mix of real life and cartoons. The CGI is total crap. The problem is that there is no texture to the Navi. Its cartoon bullshit.
-
Sunshine, please show me the fully CGI character in that film? = The Sun.
-
Finally got the site to work. Watched it a couple times to let it sink in, and I gotta say, chill, people. Does it look like the end all, be all of special effects as we know it? Not so far. Does it look like the effects shots are missing a coat or two of polish? Yes, and with roughly four months to goon something this ambitious, they probably aren't finished yet. BUT, does it look like something that could be epic in story and a kick-ass ride? Well, it does that, too. How's about we wait for more than 2 minutes out of at least 120 total before we pass judgment on a director that's proven himself time and again.
-
you ppl are some fuckin haters! you damn well you are gonna shell out your gas money to go watch the film so shut the fuck up. You couldnt make a better film with a flip-cam! FUCKERS

...A SERIOUS MAN on the the way, i'm not too precious about AVATAR.<p>I hope it's great and Cameron always brings a lot more substance than a teaser can show, but does look like Jar Jar Meets Apocalypto (the latter is good, the former bad). Despite what Cameron's been saying, i think it will depend on the 3D for the movie to work...<p>I think DAYBREAKERS will the surprise hit, sadly AVATER might well be the surprise flop... Hope not.
-
...why all the whining? First of all, this is a "science fiction" movie. We have all known that it was going to be that. We also all knew that it was going to be all CGI. I for one think that Cameron hasn't even come close to showing us what his technology can do. Of course he's not going to blow our minds in a two minute trailer, why would any of us go see this movie if we see all the amazing stuff in the two minute glimpse. I have to agree with everyone else that said it, I think that the most important part of this trailer is when Sam Worthington's character smiles at his Avatar. I think with this movie we are not only going to get state-of-the-art cgi motion capture animation, but we are also going to get a touching, emotionally engaging story. That's what I hope to see in December.
-
Like they did with Speed Racer. That ended up hurting that film more then helping. I'm thinking like Speed this movie has a learning curve to it, you need about 15 minutes of Speed to really get what you are seeing before you can fully enjoy it. This may be the same.
-
feel like they just got fucked by a cheap whore. i got my nut off, but i kind of wish i had'nt paid for it.
-
I don't know what you guys seem to be looking at. Any complaint likely comes down to the design not the render. I'd be willing to guarantee once people really see this thing, they will believe. I portend you all are going to regret ever doubting.
-
that mean that B3 is his next film..Oldman was right
-
The real story here is that this thing is going to be a financial turd. I'm not a hater, I think it looks cool and will go see it in the theater. But seriously, there's no way mainstream audiences are going to go watch blue elves fight cartoon robots. Some studio executive just shit his pants after watching this trailer.
-
Oh no... I'm in Outland again...
-
...i will agree to watch it only if the game controller is included in the ticket price!
-
skin with over sized eyes is a piss poor choice.
-
you pretty much nailed it. This is Last of the Mohicans in space.
-
they are totally 2 different ways of filmmaking and such..
-
not impressed, I am however thinking this year will be a little bit like when The Phantom Menace was released and The Matrix stole its thunder, and proved to be a far superior film, cept this year its District 9/Avatar

SIGOURNEY WEAVER IS THE ONLY GOOD PIECE OF CASTING IN THIS....
by CarlThorMark1978
Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi, CCH Pounder, Wes Studi, Stephen Lang etc…it’s like Cameron went out of his way to cast every fucking shit C-lister that he could find. With Terminator Salvation, Worthington has proven himself to be a charisma free non-entity which is a shame since HE IS THE FUCKING LEAD ACTOR. FUCK ME FUCKING CEILING CAT ALMIGHTY FUCKER OF FUCK, the only person that I’m looking forward to seeing in this is Zoe Saldana (based on her work in Star Trek) except for the small problem which is that YOU DON’T SEE HER BECAUSE SHE’S PLAYING A FUCKING COMPUTER GRAPHIC SMURF/THUNDERCAT THING WITH FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME!!!<br> <br>No wonder Cameron has been holding off on showing anything from this fucking 300+ million dollar turkey. At this point it looks like it would have been a better idea for him to have made a fucking HALO movie. 12 years and this is the best this egomaniacal fucking tool can come up with when he isn’t scuba diving or searching for Jesus’ tomb.

I think we can ALL agree that the ugliest thing about that trail
by Burgundy82
was the use of Papyrus for the logo font. WTF, Cameron — are you making a movie or opening an organic grocery store?
-
it looks amazing. the first time i watched it, i couldn't help but scrutinize every shot, looking for flaws in the cg - it looked fake to me. <p></p> but as i watch it more and more... i dunno... it looks pretty damn good. i'm excited.
-
Wonder when AICN will put up a link?
-
Stephen Lang is a fucking shit C-lister? Do a little basic fucking research.
-
FUCK YOU, SUBJECT LINE LIMITATIONS!
-
EPIC WIN YOU FUCKERS!
-
like shite. Seriously, dumb concept and a dumb movie. Wheelchair guy jacks into alien body, does it with other aliens. The actual planet looks kind of cool but the aliens look like they were originally designed for a Pixar movie. There's no photorealism to be had. Avatar? More like Avasuck! Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! WANG OUT!
-
Doesn't look revolutionary or amazing either. In the end, I don't care about getting my eyeballs fucked, I care about the story. Hopefully we will get a movie that deserves a seat next to Aliens and T2, and that's all I could hope for. On another note, The Wolfman trailer is up and it kicks ass.
-
kind of lame IMO. Looks strange overall. Not too excited for it other than it being Cameron.
-

Too much CG! It looks fake and inconsistent in a lot of spots!
by Brannagins Law
-
They won't put up a link because Harry is still pouting about Mark Romenek not being the director. Since he is SOOOO fucking good.
-
My interest would be non-existent were it not for JC's name being attached to this, so I'm stuck on 'judgement reserved'. I love how some people's lives seem to be over because the link didn't work on time, fucking gimps.
-
... and eat these shitty blue zebra-cat people! Fuck Michael Bay, fuck Fox, and fuck James Cameron's new over budgeted cartoon!
-
Did I just dream that?
-
...just been with that rich, cheerleader chick from high school that everyone was thought was so hot, but who turned out to just sort of lie there like a paralyzed fish when I actually did manage to nail her. Then years later I saw her again when she came home from college and she had shaved her head and wore Timberlands, Wrangler jeans, a flannel shirt and no makeup, had gained at least 20 pounds and listened to Tracy Chapman and Jill Sobule on her car stereo.
-
That's what I came away with. Especially the mechs. There needs to be more grime to them.

What the hell just happened to the "Close Encounters" story?
by Fa_Tass_DinoMolester
It was just there! Oh Christ, the Avatar teaser's fried my man-brain!
-
"Titanic" was a film for tween girls. It will have action for the adventure heads, but this seems more like a 'live-action' anime than anything coming from a major studio (looking at you "DragonBall Z).<br><br>I think Cameron anticipated the growth of anime/manga and saw the direction the zeitgeist was going and worked out how to westernize it enough with a backstory similar to "Dances with Wolves" to retain a point of entry for western audiences. Makes me curious regarding the storytelling beats and the overall narrative drive and pacing.
-
when will they fucking see it looks like shit when not handled moderately and controlled!!???
-
I don't get how people can say the CG looks like shit. I mean, it's not the best, but many shots are definitely up there. If you watch Lord of the Rings, you can easily tell Gollum is CGI, and your lying if you say different. Still, that's considered some of the best CGI, and some shots in this teaser are better than that. I think it's the realistic backgrounds that really differentiate it.

the last thing i have to say about this is where is the vagina..
by iwasredempted
dr. manhattan penis=avatar vagina. you want photorealistic. give me some clitoris. no? okay.
-
Erm, listen dude. You might want to grab your nearest dictionary and look up the meaning of "character" in relation to some form of dramatic performance. I may not have as good drugs as you do, but I don't recall the sun in Sunshine having much in the way of dialogue, or showcasing many nifty fighting moves or deep emotions...

YEAH, TWEENS ARE GOING TO JUST FLOCK TO SEE THIS BECAUSE....
by CarlThorMark1978
I can really see the braindead mallrats of America giving a shit about a love story between two blue Thundersmurfs!
-
Avatar will still be a cash cow.
-
...Yes, a fellow graphic designer, I take it? Papyrus sucks ass... it's such an outdated, fn mid-90's crunchy granola font. And it hasn't even been altered at all besides stretching out the kerning a little. Epic lame!

THUNDERSMURFS, THUNDERSMURFS, THUNDERSMURFS HOOOOOOOOO!!!
by CarlThorMark1978
That's what they are, FUCKING THUNDERSMURFS!!!
-
Then most people would not be interested. This looks like Cameron is still stuck in titanic mode, giving us a pg-13 dances with wolves type love story. The art design looks awful, everything looks like a retread of stuff we have seen already.
-
When the two lab assistants are looking at the Na'vi sitting up on the bench, it looks like they're staring behind him. But I just realised, the Na'vi are ten feet tall (something like that), but your brain thinks he's the same size as a human, so puts him closer than he really is in your visual field and makes it look fake. When you see that in 3D, you'll get a proper impression of where he is and it'll look awesome. So now I'm wondering how many other shots might suffer like that?
-
Ho Hum. I just can't get up for this. We are being event marketed into submission to how "real" it looks. It has to feel real, too. No soul, no movie.
-
I think the "eyeball-fuckery" thing was more a product of people here and at other movie sites unreasonably inflating expectations. I thought the trailer was great, and I'm looking forward to Avatar Day tomorrow.
-
Aug. 20, 2009, 12:15 p.m. CST
It's the realistic backgrounds that set the cg apart.
by Brannagins Law
it just looks like a prettier version of that Delgo. It looks ok in spots but others it looks fake as all crap.
-
you stupid cunt, this is what you've been spouting on about for so long? I bet you feel like a total twat now, but you'll keep a brave face until the film comes out.
-
District 9...a film by James Cameron. Avatar...a film by Neil Blomkamp. <p> Now view each of their respective trailers with that in your mind. <p> Does your perception of these films change?
-
Are you fucking kidding me! The depth and range of the Sun in that movie was fantastic! I mean have you ever seen someone SO close to death as the Sun was in that movie potrayed SO brightly before? He just needed one little nuclear blast the size of New York to be saved! And due to his location it was so hard for them to get there, but he SHINED as brightly as he could even in his frail state, so brave. Oscar worthy in my book.
-
Enjoy the epic SyFy quality love story that you've been waiting for.
-
...as anything GL has done...except without as many a-hole fanboy complaints. I give it a rating of meh/meh.
-
By the way, The Wolfman trailer is on Yahoo.
-
...I take it back. Apologies. I understand how some may find it underwhelming. It just seemed that the haters were going a little overboard with the hyperbole. There's clearly some pretty cool stuff going on in the trailer, but perhaps not to everyone's personal standard. Either way, I concede.
-
my niece just watched it with me(she only 5) and she siad it was willy wonka with the girl that ate the gum and turned blue only she didnt get fat!
-
"In other words, your brain cant comprehend the image of the navi alien, because it hasnt seen a navi before,so it acknowledges as fake and as a result u get the impression that is cartoony. " Thats' bullshit... The creature in Alien, The Thing, The Fly,fuck, even The Blob remake are much more unworldly and "alien" than the Navi and much more disturbing for to mind to accept ...do they look cartoony? Even more so, most non horror fan's can't even look at these flicks cuz the of their design, their mind make's it real for them...they get scared of a animatronic puppet or a dude in a suit. The Navi look like tall, blue, Thundercats...very comprehendable and very cg looking. See how fast my brain has grasped the unoriginal representation of the Navi? How it has classified their design and concept....and has put in the Bermuda Triangle section of my brain? Nice try...better luck next time...
-
yet after that trailer i dont care. sure, the aliens weren't hyper realistic, and the plot seems like ferngully, but damn, in 3d, ill prolly see that shit more than once.
-
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_UEbZkrBImcM/So1prFiKAnI/AAAAAAAAAtU/og40vEGF9OY/s1600-h/avatarteeth.JPG Im sorry, that looks like a guy in makeuo = photoreal!
-
Even though the fucking Chorus of the Apocalypse had to be used yet again! Emily Blunt is cinema class, people. If Joe Johnston can pull this off, there's hope for CAPTAIN AMERICA yet.
-
Why all this fuss about AVATAR - when the Wolfman Trailer and it's Genuine Physical Makeup / CG transformation mashup will own all these little blue fairies.

Not A Game Changer, But That Did Look Totally Effin' Awesome
by LaserPants
That's right, you heard me, I think that looked totally fucking awesome. I'll officially shut up forever about Cameron and how much I hate T2 if the actual movie lives up to the awesome I think I just saw.
-
Almost too I amazing, Its going to take a leap of faith to just accept those creatures as the protagonists. <p> But I for one will be there watching in 3D IMAX to give it my best shot. <p> The graphics looking incredible. The soles of its feet! Just wow! Lets see if I can just accept the faces and not be taken out wondering how they did it/
-
ummmm, that's the whole point of those, to give you an idea of what the movie will be like so you can decide whether or not you want to see it. if you expect people to see a movie before judging it then why bother make a trailer you know? anyway, this is exactly what i expected, it looks cool and i'll definately check it out but its not impressive or awesome or anything. it just looks cool.

...and watching it in 3D on an Imax is going to be an entirely different experience from watching it in 2D on a computer screen. Nothing in this preview leads me to believe this WON'T be an incredible experience.
-
Hats of to you sir for admitting the HD one looks great.
-
We demand to know why!
-
meh?
-
I don't know if it's big enough to support a $200 million dollar epic, but, you'd be surprised how many people exist in that fan community.<br><br>I don't know if I'm on the right track, but if the film is a hit, that might be factor.
-
I still think the aerial battle is the best thing in the trailer, not crazy about the other parts. <p>We'll see...
-
All and all I'd say that the hate for this has been pretty mild in terms of AICN hating. There is no one spamming crap. The dick jokes have been kept to a minimum. So that probably doesn't say much for the movie, because it isn't moving people to curse the name of Avatar and say bat shit crazy nonsense about how stupid it is and its not getting over whelming praise from everyone. A movie that causes no reaction is the worst sort of movie you can make.

kwisatzhaderach, YEAH, STEPHEN LANG IS A SHIT C-LISTER BECAUSE..
by CarlThorMark1978
I never even fucking heard anyone say shit about this douche before this year and that's only because he got casted in Public Enemies and Avatar despite the fact that he’s done NOTHING but shit TV and a few fucking piss poor movies over the years. I was amazed to find out that he played Freddy Lounds in Manhunter and now I’m even more worried about him being in Avatar since he was shit back then and I doubt that he’s improved as an actor.
-
If you look at where the worryingly effete avatar wakes up on the hospital trolley the actors are looking at a point about 2 feet behind his camp fashion designer's head. Couldn't they afford a stick with a bit of card on it when shooting..? Like the 1970's Roger Dean floating mountains.
-
Again, damn

CG still has a ways to go, but I'll definitely see it...
by Mr. Waturi
I work in the industry, so I guess I'm more discriminating than most. But honestly, the CG doesn't look much better than "Beauwolf." The character movements are still stiff (just look at the first scene where he slams his arm against the glass). The CG is still too clean. The skin doesn't have enough grit and texture. The environments don't have enough atmosphere. The eyes and teeth look cartoonish. Still, I guess that's a good thing. It should be incredibly difficult for computers to replicate life. A worthwhile effort, though. I'll be there opening day.
-
I thought it looked pretty sweet. I was expecting it to not live up to my expectations of the hype and was ready to hate it, but I kinda liked it. My issue is with Fern-Gully story remake qualities and the Papyrus font. Come on Cameron/Fox, any college design student could tell you not to use Papyrus.
-
"Brokeback Planet" LMAO.
-
Another wack CGI wolf man? No thanks
-
Anyone with a brain knows that blacklash is simply a defense mechanism due to low self-esteem. If you're getting worked up over this trailer, you might want to consider improving your own life and caring about something that actually effects you personally. Just a little advice.
-
The reason your brain is quicker to accept those other creatures you mentioned is that they are LESS human than the Na'vi and thus you have fewer points of reference to compare them to. The more human something looks, the harder it is to trick us, because we see and interact with humans every day.
-
Those were my thoughts exactly!! All except for the Roger Dean bit.. but you're right on that too, come to think of it.
-
Aliens that look like blue fairies, ships from Terminator Salvations. It's Apocalypto meets Final Fantasy. Can't believe Cameron spent 5yrs of his life on this one, and over 237 million dollars making it. This is going to fail miserably. I've liked some of Cameron's past films, The Terminator, Aliens, and The Abyss. But this film looks terrible. Here's hoping the movie is better than the trailer.
-
a certain percentage of people who believe they have perfect sight cannot experience the 3d effect. It just doesn't register as any different from 2d beyond some added "blurriness". I remember having an argument with one such person while discussing true 3d vs. simulated 3d environments displayed in 2d on a screen. He was convinced that true 3d had arrived when he played Halo. It was 2d, period. After a long time talking about the various 3d films we'd both seen over the years, it finally dawned on me that the poor guy just did not see 3d, at all.. ever. So tomorrow, be prepared for a few people here saying it was a "blurry mess" and didn't once make them feel like they were immersed. Don't take it personally.
-
Having just watched it...ugh, cg is horrible. Yes the movie is designed to be watched in 3D but most people will be forced to watch it in 2D and so far it's failed. That big panther creature was laughable and when the Avatar speaks (technically Huntingtons consciousness inside the avatar) it looked horrible. <p> There are a few nice shots of machinery (ships etc) but I've seen shots that are just as good and realistic in Battlestar Galactica, and that has a TV budget, not the biggest budget in Hollywood history. <p> I'm sure it will look great in 3D. The problem is, most people aren't going to be able to watch this in 3D. It will be a 2D experience for most of the audience.
-
It gave off that kinda vibe. I wish that Scorcese was making Hyperion...Damn that would be game changing. Also the aliens remind me of the Sithi in Tad Williams Memory Sorrow and Thorn trilogy. I don't care about the CGI if the story is good. That's why Moon was so rad. The CGI in Moon was kind of dated really--but the story kicked ass
-
This is a glorified cartoon. It's like a Roger Dean album cover come to life. So many colors and floating islands, you can't believe they actually exist, which is funny, cuz they don't.<p> Oh Mr. Cameron, Starship Troopers 3 called, they want their armored suits back.
-
in The Hard Way, great movie, with great Lang.
-
With Sam Worthington protecting the creatures of Ferngully, whose very existence is threatened by the Human Race. <p> I'm sorry but I remember when everyone here thought James Cameron was gonna save cinema with this film. Everyone was like "Cameron's gonna show Lucas and Spielberg how to do CG right" and all kinds of other hyperbole that was probably put there by Cameron and his ego. <p> Take a look at what being overconfident and overstating your abilites is making your movie look like now, Cameron. The backlash on this talkback hasn't been seen since Phantom Menace came out. As for my opinion on the look of the film - I think the Navi look jerky and unrealistic at the minimum. They have no pores and it doesn't look like they have any textures on thier bodies, it just looks like blue coloring. I think a lot more texture and bump-mapping work has to be done to at least give off the illusion that they look fairly real. But until then, this looks like an Epic Fail!! My eye's virginity will be taken by Tron Legacy, thank you...
-
Drink it!
-
...why not something a little cooler, more ferocious looking? Like the prawns in District 9. I'm still gonna see this. But I'm really, really disappointed in the direction Cameron took with the Na'vi. Everything but the Na'vi looks amazing.
-
I have several to choose from here, Sacramento region. Some are better than others, but there's a selection. I still find it odd that the best 3d imax screen in town is not participating in Avatar day.
-
I have a feeling though, the story is pretty "see through" at this point. It looks like a classic western almost, cowboys vs indians, with "cultural" misunderstandings. As much as the cg is transparent, I think the plot itself can be easily seen through the preview. But hey, I could be wrong.

THUNDERSMURFS, THUNDERSMURFS, THUNDERSMURFS HOOOOOOOOO!!!
by CarlThorMark1978
-
Not even an end of the night hug – instead the Avatar trailer walked me up to the door and said, “you’re a great friend.”
-
..."Dances with Wolves" should google "Edgar Rice Burroughs" and "planetary romance". Just sayin'.
-
Does Scorcese still have the rights to "Hyperion"?
-
Totally agree. This still looks awesome, though. I honestly can't believe so many of you are hating on this. It looks good to me, and I'm highly dubious / critical of Cameron seeing as how he made two good movies and then a handful of shitty ones (imho). This looks pretty friggin' awesome, though.
-
that we have seen enough other impressive CG works, we're no longer wowed by the quality we see in Avatar... JC can only pray that the story is good enough to attract moviegoers to see it, otherwise i'm sorry to say that the word "epic fail" might be true...
-
for the HD version? Please.

I am currently underwhelmed.

I WOULD HAVE RATHER SEEN PEOPLE IN BLUE MAKE-UP FOR FUCK SAKES..
by CarlThorMark1978
That fucking shithead Cameron could have saved tens of millions if he had the brains to just make the Thundersmurfs the same size as humans, painted his actors blue and slapped on some prosthetics, contact lenses and I wouldn’t have given a shit. The make-up for Mystique in the X-Men movies looked better then this CGI shit and it would have also allowed for the actual actors to emote rather then us watching a cartoon.
-
and it's shame b/c Scorcese's interpretation would have been something to see!!
-
Then again, I don't really give a shit about what looks CG or not.
-
I'm not surprised. This actually does look cool, but the self-proclaimed "king of the world" just totally fucked up by proclaiming that this was going to blow everyones minds. If it just quietly came out, and the trailer hit, people would be far more excited. As it stands, it looks cool, but it does not look any better, efxwise then any of the other big CG tentpole movies like the Star Wars prequels, LOTR, Matrix sequels, King Kong. It does look good, its just not game changing.
-
...underwhelming.
-
Hell, I'll go see it, just because I'm sure the technology is great. But I was never jazzed by the story, and this doesn't help. It kinda looks like a sci-fi version of "Dances with Wolves". Dunno....it seemed underwhelming to me.
-
...is that they are using "Papyrus" as the title font. Good God. Other than that it looks great. The movie doesn't need to be all mindblowing and revolutionary for me to enjoy it. If Cameron can just make a decent sci-fi action flick I'll be happy. We've had to endure too much garbage in the action genre for far too long.
-
Sigh...<br><br>Where, at any point in any one of my posts, did I criticise the effects of Sunshine? I think that film is absolutely fucking amazing and criminally underrated at both a commercial and awards level. But...<br><br>THE... <br><br>SUN... <br><br>IS... <br><br>NOT... <br><br>A... <br><br>CHARACTER!!!!!<br><br>No matter how much symbolic meaning an inanimate object is given in a movie (see also the ring in LOTR and the ship in Event Horizon), it is NEVER a true character. It has no emotion, no performance and does not react with the world around it in any meaningful way.<br><br>Of course, when I wrote my initial reply I had already contemplated the fact that your post could be a ham-fisted, clumsy attempt at irony. I chose (and choose now) to take your post seriously, though. I'll take the chance of being the butt of a pathetic joke that only the teller laughs at any day if the alternative is to correct someone's misconceptions...
-
...are they still there?!
-
I heard reports of $240 million on AVATAR and $250 million on last Harry Potter movie.
-
Blue cats everywhere.
-
the haters just hate anything that sparkles. watch the scene in the bamboo forest again. remember, that's all fucking CG. pretty massively incredible when you think about it. only thing i don't like is the kiss.
-
Consider yourself an ass because I was just havin a wee bit of tom foolery wit yeah! And as long as I'm laughin who gives a fuck about anyone else! <P> I'll dance away playing me pan pipe.
-
Way too much CGI. Aliens worked becuse of it's realism . If they can make Abe from Hellboy a guy in a suit they could have done it here too.
-
this is what halo should look like..let cameron direct that next!

It looks alright.....a step up from beowulf

That's what I thought. You're a cunt. And have zero intellectual prowess. Quit surfing AICN and go back to playing World of Warcraft :) You'll be missed though!
-
but thats only because the design of the navi are cartoonish. i actually liked it... looked interesting really.
-
The teaser didn't impress me at all.I really expected something mind blowing from all the hype this has been getting. Instead I see nothing but the same old shitty cgi. I really think this will tank at the box office. Bummer.
-
Every frame looked fake. The aliens looked like motherfucking CARTOONS. This is what we waited for Cameron? WTF?
-
Based on the trailer this 'looks' fantastic - however I say a lot of cliché moments ala LOTR, Star Wars, ect... could be the same story with new paint. Oh well, I am a sucker for anything sci-fi so I will be handing my money over anyways.
-
Terminator 4.0: Live Free or Die Hard, raped Tim Burton's CGI work.
-
I am not a CG hater like many people....and I'm not a retard who bought into the hype.

Which one of you pricks is hating on my AVATAR movie?
by standundermyumbrella
after watching the trailer a minute ago, i can honestly say blowing a single load is absolutely impossible! i had multiple orgasms that were so juicy and fresh you can't even imagine!! neytiri has gotta be one of the sexiest creatures ever put on film. the cgi is so mindblowing i needed to call a detective to help me find all the missing pieces of my skull! you are all being too hard like my dick because your expectations were just simply impossibly high. that doesn't change the fact that neytiri is a sexy bitch thats going to be masturbated to for years and years. i will be looking forward to busting more nuts on avatar day! what a wonderful glorious beautiful masterpiece this is going to be!!!
-
work.
-
20 feet tall, their vagoo's must be immense! Maybe i could fit my whole head inside...
-
Really long, really boring, really self-indulgent, really really cheesy Cameron dialogue, really really really tech-obsessed. Oh, and why does the CGI look like Finding Nemo or some shit? Did Jimmy C tells us this was going to be groundbreaking? In what sense?
-
NOO BENNEH, SCREWWWW YOUUUUUU!!!!

Whoa! Watched it four times now and IT FUCKING ROCKS!
by Motoko Kusanagi
This is the first epic sci-fi action movie that has a story, nice visuals and no fucking shaky cam.<p>Fuck all those Michael Bay / Stephen Sommers / George soulless Lucas / McFUCKING-G jerkoffs.<p>This is the real deal. Welcome back, Iron Jim! We missed you.
-
Is more interesting to me then this trailer. That thing sounds awesome, even if its showing crappy TV shows.
-
Why would it tank at the box office? Total shit makes hundreds of millions of dollars. Yes i'm looking at you, Transformers 2. Avatar will be huge because: <p> A) Everyone will go and see it out of curiosity. <p> B) Kids will see it multiple times. <p> and, most importantly: C) It will probably be fantastic.
-
The CGI won't be enough to save the movie. It will live or die based on its plot. Hate to say it.

Peoples Expectations Are Too High BECAUSE of Cameron's Ego
by LaserPants
Like I said, if this was just introduced in a normal fashion, rather than hearing Cameron scream, shout, and jerk off all over himself that it was going to dramatically alter the very framework of the Universe, then people wouldn't be hating on it. <br><br>I agree, though, that people are being too hard on this. It looks good to me. And since when does cartoony = bad? I fuckin' love cartoons! I wanna live in a cartoon. Doesn't everybody? Oh, but photorealistic? Nah. Unless its a photo of a cool looking cartoon, of course.
-
AHhhhh there's the penis references. LET IT BEGIN!
-
Didn't know they were re-releasing that shit!!!!
-
This is what we waited for from Cameron? What a bunch of over-hyped drivel. I'm convinced it's target audience is undersexed, over-geekified man-boys. This movie just fell off my list of ones to watch.
-
This looks like a really good video game cut-scene. CGI lacks the proper "weight" to ever look real. What planet do the people who think this looks even CLOSE to real live on?
-
cameron hasnt come out and said anywhere this is gonna be huge....
-
It's that they look like cartoons! I mean, this is only marginally better than that thing from Lost In Space. I've never seen a dinosaur, but I know when one in a movie looks realistic and when it looks like a cartoon.
-
"FOR ALL WHO EXALT THEMSLEVES WILL BE HUMBLED." -Luke 14:11

I don't see how people can say otherwise. The CGI is the best I've ever seen, I'd like to see examples that people think are better.
-
AND THAT'S JUST THE TIP! What till he sticks it in!
-
I was expecting to be more wowed by the CGI than I actually was, but I'll give James Cameron the benefit of the doubt.<p>The thing that looked the most out of place to me? The wheelchair. For some reason a future where they haven't figured out how to regenerate nerve connections, especially when a mind can be projected into the fully functioning (nerve connections and all) body of an alien species, just seems all wrong...
-
the haters will go back to their caves.the link with the article, which Emperor posted, tells a lot of correct things.u should read it. <p>just be patience.tomorrow u will watch a glimpse of Camerons true vision in its fully glory.
-
I said I was prepared to take the chance...
-
Jurassic Park.
-
Think about it, both took a massive break from directing. Both have served up over-hyped cartoony CG sci-fi garbage as a comeback. Admit it!!
-
People who think this looks bad have the right to think that, of course. The problem lies with judging a movie so harshly before even hearing so much as two lines of dialogue. Especially given that this is the new creation by a man who's track record is nearly perfect, who has dedicated the last decade of his life creating an ORIGINAL world to entertain you. I think you owe the man a little more than some bullshit attack on two minutes of footage that is totally out of context from the rest of the material. Do you know what REAL work is? It's not hard labor, it's not a nine to five desk job. Those things drain your soul and make you negative, then you spread your negativity here. Real work is creating something new that enhances you and the world and makes you happy. Dedicating yourself and laying it all out on the line with a new piece of art is a very hard thing to do. At least see his work before you tear it down, and remember what the man has given you. And don't let the fact that you're force fed so many shitty movies by Hollywood cloud your judgment when a truly great movie comes along. District 9 and Avatar in the same year? We're fucking lucky. Let's focus on the good stuff people, make the world a little bit happier!

All your complaints are design related, not render.
by The_Genteel_Gentile
But once we actually see real scenes involving acting we'll likely understand why the design had to accommodate the full range of human emotion, and we'll be all the more glad for it. I can't imagine how such a really fascinating, intriguing, and beautifully atmospheric trailer could possibly inspire this level of vitrol. You've all just been aching to bitch huh? You do realise you all just crucified the savior right?
-
It looks like all CGI-heavy films look: like watching someone else play a video game. And has there ever been any work of art this long in the making that was any good? Does Chinese Democracy mean nothing? I'll stick with Starship Troopers, thanks.
-

Oh, and you know what ELSE sucks about this whole premise?
by Ironhelix
the fact that this "fantastic" world is populated by dinosaurs, and 10ft tall blue humans. The next time, take all that money and go buy yourselves an imagination, and THEN make a movie. Fuck.
-
Is this a remake of Ferngully or is it actually a sequel? Either way, my fur friends in Second Life are glad somebody's finally made a movie just for them.
-
Wait a second, Cameron wasn't shouting up and down saying that this was going to be a "game changer"? Thats what I remember. Thats been the hype from the man himself for several months. That it was going to be the most amazing explosion of 3d efx wizardry ever. Dude, we even had arguments about it and ridiculously over-the-top his rhetoric was.<br><br>I think it looks really cool, but NOWHERE NEAR as cool as the hype, largely from him and/or his camp, led us all to believe. I'll definitely be seeing it, think it looks cool, but efx-wise it does not even approach "game-changing."
-
http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1619098/20090819/story.jhtml <P> Who the fuck is that dork talking about the video before hand?
-
The CGI performance capture is amazing. As is the shot of the ship landing in the forest, and mvoements of the plants. This movie looks EPIC and, most importantly, Cameron's record is perfect.
-
Is this the new Monsters, Inc. 2 trailer?
-
AAAAAhahahah thats funny. About the wheel chair. <P> Then again think about now. We can get your dick hard when you are dead. Give hair to the hairless, but haven't done shit to fix cancer.
-
usually when someone spends a decade working on a film, making sure EVERY aspect is perfect, it turns out pretty well. Especially when it's James fucking Cameron. Why don't you see the movie on the big screen in 3D (and make sure your brain is turned on) before you judge it?
-
The script, performances and direction better rock because the CGI blows. None of it looks convincing. I don't see any huge advances based on the trailer. The CGI movement still is off. The characters look gummy and cartoony and the backgrounds look like something out of Myst. Unless the movie as a whole is utterly fantastic, this has disaster written all over it. <p> Which may be a good thing. A huge financial Heaven's Gate disaster may just get Cameron back on the Terminator ship to right that course.
-
Or do they make up a whole new Blue Cat?
-
I can relate to this story. Originally skeptical of the anthro community, I went deep undercover as a cheetah man in Second Life and discovered an amazing world where I met the love of my life, a nine foot tall transsexual unicorn.

I've been talking about the lack of CG "evolution" for years...
by Viewer 3
But every time I bring it up on this site, I get pegged as an "elitist". When I talk about how cartoony and unnaturally smooth and fluid lazy motion capture looks, people pretend like I'm just LOOKING for something to hate. Now suddenly people are crawling out of the woodwork to actually recognize that there hasn't been any significant CG evolution since Jurassic Park.<p><p>As I've said in other TBs, I thought Gollum was a step in the right direction, and I hoped that character animation would really take off from there. Unfortunately it's only gotten more and more lazy. Everything in this trailer still looks like either rubber, latex, or plastic. Rubber and latex for the skin of pretty much every living CG thing, and plastic for everything else.<p><p>And come on, are there really people stupid enough to say "Oh well maybe these shots just aren't finished and it'll look way better in the final release"? Honestly, I can understand why some still want to cling to hope, but it doesn't take a very high IQ to see the many logical and technical reasons why the enormous makeover required for this film to reach a better level of realism is impossible at this point. Use your brain, damn.
-
Anyone up for calling fans of the film that? You know like Browncoats or BSG Nerds.
-
it looked very good but in terms of ocular rapeage... It barely touched the sides. Sorry. Just my opinion. And as one of the 10 percent of the population that gets headaches from 3D.....
-
it's like a cartoon. Not excited about this movie.
-
Though I have to admit theres some impressing visuals here I was kinda shocked. What was this talk about putting so much work into making this Pandora world as realistic as possible? I was willing to buy these giant stone rings, alhthough no geological explanation for those comes to mind immediately. Sorry, but when the first floating rocks showed up i thought Mr. Cameron must be kidding. This was supposed to be science fiction, wasn't it? Floating rocks that's not science fiction, that's fantasy. You should hear the utter distaste i put into the word "fantasy" in such occasions.<p> Or is this the film's McGuffin? Are the nasty humans there to mine for the world's precieous anti gravity pixie dust?<p> Big blue elves with even bigger eyes, this seems to be made for the generation anime. I prefer some science in my science fiction. Guess teenagers are gonna love it. May not tank after all. <p> And yes, I'm still going to see this film, as we all are.

I can't believe anyone says it looks horrible, it doesn't look h
by Magic Rat
But it doesn't appear that it continues the progression of CGI that Cameron started with T2 going all the way through Lord of the Rings. It seems like a minor step forward, instead of a major one, and I think that's why people are upset. Most were expecting a huge leap and in 2D, its hard to tell if this is that much of a leap. We might all be singing a different tune come December, though.
