Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. And you guys were worried about there being no publicity surrounding AVATAR. I have a feeling this week's cannonball of publicity isn't going to let up until December. I have been as excited as anyone can be for a publicity spin like this film has taken on. But as far as those shots go you must be kidding me That look like fucking turd face. Not saying that is make or break in any kind of way. But shocked that those are the first large set of character images released. There must be another plan in the works. Isn't this supposed to be far into the future? What, is he supposed to be another retro guy a la Will Smiff wearing converse hi-tops in I, ROBOT. This equals LAZY COSTUME DESIGN PERIOD. It's akin to one of us wearing clothes from hundreds of years ago. Styles from today will date this film in the years to come. They should've been more imaginative.

was fun, but it was just a mixture of Aliens, Top Gun and Tour of Duty.
I'm not complaining as I've downloaded the whole series (not available to buy in the UK) and have been humming the theme tune since the late 90s. But I'm concerned that JC has simply made an Aliens retread that looks worryingly like he's unaware of the existence of HALO, Space:A&B or any other property that 'borrowed' from Aliens in the first place.
I hate to say it but I'm losing hope for this with ever piece of concept art and production still they release.
I'll be happy to be proved wrong, I just don't have the sort of JC can do no wrong attitude that this site thrives on. Hell apart from The Terminator and Abyss, I've had real problems with every movie he's made. -

Lemme guess....... she's never been taken seriously by anyone especially her family. They probably all died in some kind catastrophic accident that has left her alone in this world. All she has now is the rag tag bunch riding around on the USS Avatar. But she aint gonna smile for no one in the first act. She kind of likes the cripple, but she aint gonna let no one in on that one except for that nudge to us in the audience. Somewhere in the second act she'll hop on into one of those robotic machine things and cruise around pandora with her man crush the cripple. They are good buds but he'll never want her in the way she really wants. On an expedition into the gay blacklight cgi night time her face will get nearly completely bitten off by a really over designed horned monster. Cripple man will convincingly cry over the loss of his bud that he realizes how important she was to him, little sis. She passes away. He is forever changed from this, a bit colder but wiser. Recognizing how shitty life can be but ultimately that it is not the fault of the peaceful mullet mother fuckers on pandora. ....just one theory. -

Obviously a lot of care and work is going into this. Military shots remind me of the Aliens look of the Colonial marines + those gun/drop ships from Unreal Tournament. -

Honestly, the thing I'm most worried about is this Sam Worthington guy. The dude had no fucking charisma in that Terminator debacle. The CG doesn't really bother me. Sure, it doesn't necessarily look REAL, but it's cool and imaginative. As long as the story is engaging and the filmmaking is solid (no reason to think it won't be), then it should be excellent. Is because not everyone thought in advance that this was going to change the world. It looks very good to me, certainly good enough to suspend disbelief and by into the world he's trying to portray. If there's anything 'cartoony' its in the design of the na'vi (big eyes i think) rather than the CGI. That shot of the Na'vi sitting up on the bed looked awesome.

When you see the first avitar awake from the op table and slap the observation window it's so badly done it's obscene. If this was a fairytale adventure with Barbie in I'd say it looked good but considering its a war related film it looks totally silly. There will be a few video game conceptual artists out there laughing at the mocap and model quality. We know there's no 12ft aliens to test it against but at least don't soft focus them and have little or no good texturing..

The CGI is good but not perfect. It doesn't really matter; it could be blatantly fake, like Beowulf was... but if it was directed by somebody with a steady hand like Cameron the movie will still be great. I'm looking forward to finally seeing a movie from somebody who knows pacing and how to film action. It's practically a lost art. The photorealism of the CGI is a plus, but not the most important part.

Yes, the CGI aliens don't look realistic, but they are integrated perfectly with the scenary. And the planet looks REAL. This is the first time in my life where I couldn't tell the different between what was realistic, or CGI. ......the Prawns in District 9 were better integrated into the real world and better rendered than the Blue avatars are over here. That being said, this is just a teaser trailer, so there's a chance that they could still tighten up the CG before release. I remember the shot of Iron Man walking away from teh exploding tank looking like a crappy PS3 motion shot during the Superbowl Teaser trailer spot, and 2 months later, it looked all tight when the movie was release.
On the other hand I also remember the shot of the Helicopters approaching the alien mothership on the first District 9 trailers, as well as some of the first prawn shots, and they looked pretty real, and well done already by that point.
Bad CG can sometimes pull you out of a movie with a good story quick. Just remember Phantom of the Menace ( for bad CGI I mean, - not a good story). -

Especially that damn planet. I have never been fooled by CGI, but that actually looked real. I couldn't tell the difference between what was CGI and what was real. The only thing that stood out as CGI were the blue aliens, but they still looked gorgeous. They had real texture, and details put into them. I can't wait for this. The people who are complain are just trying to act cool. The first minute of this trailer makes "District 9" look like shit.

"District 9" looks like shit compared to this. At 30 million dollars, it looks like a 30 million dollar picture. I mean sure, everything was integrated well, but the CGI still stood out like a sore thumb. And while the CGI blue creatures in "Avatar" look like rubber, they still fit within the scenary and don't stand out like a sore thumb. In fact, they actually look gorgeous, while the aliens in "District 9" looked like somebody took a dumb on them.

I haven't seen D9 yet, and despite a spoiler leaked here and there, still have no idea where the movie ends up, plot-wise.
On the other hand, I don't even need to see AVATAR to know exactly where its plot is leading. -
.....that based on this trailer, it looks cartooney shit - especially all and any of the scenes with the CGI stuff. I tried to avoid having to say it, but seeing as a District 9 hater was going to come out and spout more crap, and generally stir more nonsense, let's just call a spade a spade.
It looked like a Saturday morning special like the Teletubbies on CGI steroids meets the Wookie planet in Attack of the clones - insofar as the CGI scenes, the CGI blue avatar characters (and their lousy mo-cap movements) are concerned.
That being said, I'm still intrigued to see it because the story looks interesting, Sigourney Weaver is in it and she tends to have good taste picking scripts, and of course Jim Cameron is helming it, and being the perfectionist that he is, I'm sure he'll step back and notice all the flaws and correct them before the final release.
Sorry to have to take a dumP (with a "P") on your wet dream, but hey, you asked - while trying to be a douche about it. -
