The modern remake of OUTLAND, the sci-fi remake of High Noon, is on the docket...

Published at:  Aug 19, 2009 10:12:09 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I know, hahaha, lolz... a remake of a remake. It's not the first time. Recently we saw a pretty damn good remake of John Carpenter's ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13, which he's gone on record as saying is essentially his re-imagining of RIO BRAVO.

I'm not super connected to OUTLAND, to be honest. I haven't watched the movie since I was a kid and I remember very little of it. It's about time for a revisit. So, I have no idea what to think about SHOOT 'EM UP's Michael Davis attempting a redo of the sci-fi remake of High Noon other than there's a mighty big kilt to fill. I have to imagine they've talked about Clive Owen stepping in for the Sean Connery role, which wouldn't be bad. There's just not too many actors that mix the charm and toughness that Connery has.

If they reaaaaaallllyyy wanted to impress me, they'd just pull Connery out of retirement and make this his sci-fi Gran Torino.

Now let's take bets on how long until we see news of a remake of BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS, the sci-fi remake of the western remake of SEVEN SAMURAI. That'd be fourth generation!

    Outland was a good movie

    by i am_notreal

I remember it fondly. Not only did Hyams pretty successfully mimic the gritty outer-space vibe of "Alien" with his junked-up and cluttered interiors, but it was an enteraining flick that I still watch occasionally and it got me, as a child of 10, interested in a piece of cinematic history, "High Noon." A classic win-win for entertainment and education.

I don't throw the term "hack" around alot, but Shoot 'Em Up was horrendous. Running Scared (Wayne Kramer) is everything Shoot 'em Up and Crank wish they were (fact). Better director choices would be thus: 01. Duncan Jones (Moon) 02. Danny Boyle (Sunshine) 03. Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo) 04. Kathryn Bigelow (Strange Days) 05. Stephen Norrington (Blade)

A couple of maddening things about Outland

    by skimn

A point that Pauline Kael rightly brings up, that in keeping with the High Noon plotline, "It's insane that the miners refuse to help Connery--that they don't mind being exploited, going crazy, and destroying themselves." And why does Connery go to all these elaborate steps to kill the hitmen, when he knows exactly when the shuttle arrives (its been counting down onscreen forever). Just sit back and fire on them when they seperate themselves from the other passengers, which is exactly what they do, but Connery views it on a security camera instead. Oh, and the moony faced kid actor that plays his son.."I wuv you daddy.."..yuck.But as I said before, the photograghy, set design, and acting are all good.

Who gives a shit if heads explode in outer space

    by the_ad_wizard_who_came_up_with_this_one

If you want to get into the physics of the thing pretty much erverything falls apart, exploding heads being the smallest flaw. But who gives a shit? The only problem about Outland is that the pacing is a little grating at times. But the atmosphere makes up for that in spades. The scenes with the Marshall and the Doctor are just pure gold. Today's Sci-Fi shit dreams of reaching a fraction of that mood.

You are calling the whole film 'meh' because two people's heads expand and explode in space? That used to be a common misconception (along with 'your blood boils!' .... and yes, you're right, that doesn't happen but honestly, so what? The film was a terrific realization of a security marshall in space facing a difficult situation where a corporation looks the other why while its miners' take drugs (and eventually begin profiting from their sale). Peter Boyles was un-fucking-believably brilliant in this film. Sean Connery was solid as always...the only part that felt tacked on was the struggles with his wife. This was simply one of the smartest, coolest films of its era but due to its slower pace and extremely graphic brutal moments, didn't totally sync with audiences. But to call it 'meh' because it didn't portray space science correctly is kind of a miss - the only film to every portray what happens to the body correctly is Sunshine. And that film (while genius in some ways) was also a miss for a lot of folks.

HUH? When was there a first time? Outland is not by any stretch a good movie. Most of Peter Hyams (sorry I said Yates earlier) moives recently have not been that good. Relic was good, Stay Tuned was good as well. Outland was not good, it was just boring. It wasn't that I didn't care for it, it was not very good, especially since I had seen Silent Running for the first time right around the same time I saw Outland. Silent Running is a good movie, Outland sucks because there is not much to it.

    by mgthedj

It's somewhat forgotten, and most of the team that did the fx work also worked on "Alien", so that's why the look of "Outland" is so captivating. Now, I will say I am sick and tired of the lame ideas coming out of Big-Screen Big-Budget Hollywood Studios. Look at "District 9", a very good movie made by folks from the Southern Hemisphere. Danny Boyle, a Brit, sweeps the Oscars with his film set in India. A 95% Brit, Irish and Aussie cast and crew make "Batman Begins" and "Dark Night." Hollywood people...You have way too many financial planners, salesmen, members of a particular religion that believe in Xenu, and (frankly) gay men with WAY TOO MUCH say in what you are making. Financial planners and salesmen want remakes, and Judd Apatow (or Apatow clone) comedies. The gay men end up giving the world straight women and closeted gay men, or men who just look too young for the roles, co-starring in your romantic comedies and your prestige "Oscar-Bait" movies. Members of that particular religion who worry about Xenu are turning potentially interesting tent-pole films into lame propaganda pieces for their church.I'll say it, Hollywood you still need MORE DIVERSITY!!!!

The role of O'Neil is that of a corporate policeman, he's not meant to be anything more than a means to keep people in line when they are off their mining shirt. I'd favour someone a bit more stocky like Josh Brolin or Russell Crowe for the part over Clive Owen tbh.

Also agreed that what made Outland was the world weary relationship between O'Neil & Lazarus. Hopefully they'll maintain that and avoid any love story aspect.

but it's mediocre. Good leads, but the story is nonsense. Let the assassins loose rather than search everyone on the shuttle once it arrives? Flush the drugs? It made me never want to go into space without my helmet, and it made me want to avoid a career in space mining alltogether. Outland was quite decent – a very solid performance from a post Bond Connery. Of course, if I was in that position, I might just fire a missile as the shuttle as it was on its approach and claim it was an accident. Sure, there would be a little collateral damage, but it sure would have saved a lot of time and been a Hell of a lot safer.

The lead-in to this article is to laud the remake of Assault on Precinct 13? Please, please tell me that was some truly subtle sarcasm.

They should remake OUTLAND as a western

    by countryboy

  • Aug 19, 2009 8:49:48 PM CDT

    The original IS good....

    by ivor heath

....a bit creaky in places but I still love it, and I always have to watch it all the way through if I catch it on tv. I remember some piece in Cinefantastique at the time saying Hyams specifically stated early on to the crew that "this film has to look like Alien". And any film where Lester Freamon from The Wire turns out to be a bad guy can't be all bad.

    Didn't they already remake Outland?

    by beane2099

I'm pretty sure a movie with Jim Caviezel came out this year with the same name. I assumed that was a remake. Am I wrong?

    Distant Sound of Thunder...

    by xannibal

The prod company ran out of money and couldn't pay for the effects, not his fault. Hyams is hit or miss. I still LOVE the paranoia of Capricorn One (just read a great article about how it got made/funded by ITC) I just saw 2010 again on cable last night, which I really like. Some of his other stuff is better than average (Running Scared, Presidio, Star Chamber) other stuff is nothing special (Timecop, The Relic, End of Days). Some is just plain bad (Sudden Death). James Cameron personally recommended him to Schwarzenegger for End of Days, btw.

Some sort of Farther Outland could work.

    by kabong

The original had great texture but it was weak in plot and action.

This is one movie that was good in its first incarnation but might be even better with another riff.

    Hyams also did 2010...

    by kjmad25

... which I thought was quite good as well. Either way, a remake of Outland isn't needed.

    Space drugs rule!

    by macready452

Connery good. Boyle awesome. Space druggies awesome. Killing space druggies awesome. Showdowns in space awesome. Pacing and effects in the original drag the movie down. Perfect movie to be remade

Not calling you out whoever you are. I think most here know the difference between a bad movie and a movie that they don't care for. The most fun you can get out of this site isn't the news, it's the talkbacks. It's a god given right to trash the fuck out of what we don't like. It's freedom, my friend, you gotta cherish it. Cherish it.

    I love Outland

    by docpazuzu

Sure, the science breaks down in a couple of places, but who cares? The atmosphere of the film and the performances more than make up for it.

As for the DVD, it's only the U.S. disc that suffers from that ghastly interlacing problem (worst disc I've ever seen). I have both the R1 and R2 discs and can verify that the R2 PAL disc does NOT have this problem. That having been said, it's still a vanilla release with no cleanup done whatsoever, which is a crime considering how awesome the set designs are in Outland.

Remake? Terrible idea. Put out a decent DVD of the original and then make NEW SHIT.

Oh and Shoot 'Em Up is beyond awful. A smug, condescending Crank wannabe which completely doesn't get the point of the type of films it's trying to emulate and "improve" upon.

...when it came to Outland. Why do the miners not help the law and continue to allow themselves to be exploited by the mining company? Because the mining company was supplying them with DRUGS. Fucking duh.

Shit. The Richard Pryor one was a remake as well. Now they are so desperate for ideas they have to hit the well a third time?

    by midnightmeattrain

    The original isn't very good.

Connery is irreplaceable, of course, but nothing else about that movie makes it "remake proof".

"The new take expands the concept, making it tentpole-sized, while keeping the original's theme. The story takes place in an orbiting city around the moon, where a cop uncovers a murderous conspiracy endangering the entire city. With a week before his retirement back to Earth, our hero has to choose between walking away with his wife, or taking on a private army with his overachieving ex-partner and wife's former boyfriend."

    by tinkertiw

I mean, can you think of less exciting news? I have a VHS of Outland gathering dust. I love Connery, but have no desire to watch it, remember nothing special about the movie. Take the money and do an ORIGINAL idea!!!

No, I don't call it "Meh" simply because heads don't explode in space. I call it "Meh" because it has so many plot holes in it it's not even worth discussing how flawed the story was. I already mentioned flushing the drugs down the toilet. We already had someone else mention the point about the assassins couldn't be stopped or shot after they got off the shuttle. Then you got the murder of of James B. Siking's deputy character after which Connery doesn't bother to investigate anyone. Maybe if he would have, then he might have suspected his other African-American deputy, but then that would ruin the surprise climax at the end. I like several of Hyams work, 2010, Capricorn One, Timecop and a few others. I'm even going to see "Beyond a Reasonable Doubt" this weekend at an early screening. He's a capable director and having talent like Connery & Peter Boyle does make the film better, but IMHO, having the 2 of them in it takes a crappy film with a lot of plot holes and turns it "meh", instead of just utter crap.
Or maybe I'm just friggin jaded that every other day we hear about another remake of another film or TV show. I wish the all of the film guilds would jack up their fees on the residual payments to the original creators so that Hollywood studios would do this less often. I won't say there isn't original material being produced, but there are too many fucking remakes being made.

Man - agree'd Outland really stands out

    by helium3

Interesting -- Still one of my favorites at the time it was most advanced , not just in its filming but also its content - life on a outer moon mining colony- the entire cast was top notch - Just goes to show you how New Hollywood has either run out of new ideas or is being squeezed to only offer very limited subjects - also how kinda dumb the audience is - they want more screen wow/pop/shine - dont think much anymore - I say the original is pretty Golden - a remake will look to be more ID4 summer blockbuster instead of smart : cheers:
