BUFFY/ANGEL Icon James Marsters Joins CAPRICA Cast!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
I am – Hercules!!
James Marsters, who spent seven years playing punk vampire Spike on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel,” has joined the cast of “Caprica,” EW’s Mike Ausiello reports exclusively.
According to Ausiello:
Marsters will play a dangerous terrorist leader by the name of Barnabus Greeley in a minimum of three episodes. Driven by desires both moralistic and carnal, Barnabus is as lethal as he is unpredictable.
The “Caprica” writers’ room is overseen by star “Buffy” writer-producer Jane Espenson.

Falling back on the Buffy alumni faithful for casting choices?
Lame. -
I wasn't planning on watching this show prior to the announcement of Marster's casting. Now I definitely will, and I'm sure I'm not alone. The guy is a great actor and he has serious cred when it comes to genre television, so as far as I'm concerned this is a great move from both an artistic and commercial perspective. Now, they just need to make him a series regular!
-
Aint It Cool fans just got the pwesent of a total FANGASM! Squeeeee! Marsters was criminally underused on Smallville. I hope they give him more screentime on Caprica.

James Marsters should get more work .At least more then Marsden
by ottomatic
lol Still not excited about this show even with his and patton oswalt being added to the show.
-
I hope he talks in an English accent.
-
That DANNYGLOVERS_DICKBLO0D "squeed" on August 18,2009.
-
BSG handled its famous-guest star characters (Cavil, D'anna, Cain, Bulldog to a lesser degree) fairly well. So hopefully Marsters and Oswalt won't feel too out-of-place.
What's still the thing worrying me most is everyone's insistence that CAPRICA is going to have so much more humour than BSG. I guess we'll get our first taste of that in "The Plan," and I certainly hope it works. Humour, and Buffy-style "banter humour" especially, just doesn't seem to be a particularly great fit for the BSG/CAPRICA universe. -
But seriously, Herc, this is bordering on lustful obsession. Get a grip.
-
I wish him luck with the role and he definitely was under used on Smallville. He could have been a huge kick ass villian for a few seasons but apparently the writers there have severe ADD, I'll use this past season finale as exhibit A. Also, his band had a few cool songs, I forgot there name though.

"bordering on"???

"icon"??? As much as I like Buffy and LOVED Angel
by hollywoodhellraiser
more, Marsters is no icon?
-
Maybe all these plus points will balance that huge negative of Espensen being showrunner. OK OK we do NOT know how she'll handle it, but her BSG episodes were mostly weak. Can she suddenly turn into an amazing writer?? Will Caprica turn into Buffy? Can they make us care about the genesis of the Cylons when we already know about their history prior to Caprica?
-
You would have to agree that he is an icon OF Buffy and Angel. No?
-
Uh no...just....no
-
I'm not giving them another chance to f me over.
-
can anyone else see this series going down in a flaming spiral of "wisecracks" and fight scenes with wooshing arm sound effects? fuck this.
-
He was defintely an icon for those shows which is what was implied. Arguably the fan favorite as both shows came to a close.
-
James Marsters rocks!!!

Are they ever going to officially explain what the fuck
by aliendragqueen
ghost Kara Thrace was??
-
Seems to be reliable as an actor. Wonder if any other Buffy alums will join the cast. Nick Brendon gotta eat too.
-
"Buffy/Angel/Torchwood icon"?
-
really
-
Looking forward to seeing him in Caprica.
I'm just listening to him narrate one of the Dresden Files audio books and he rocks. -

Spike was never an icon on Angel! He was a ratings grab!
by hollywoodhellraiser
He really wasn't need on Angel! Let me go old school here, the Fang Gang were badass! Now the Scoobies needed Spike because besides Buffy and Willow nobody was worth a shit on that team!
-
She ruined the last year of BSG, now she's gonna ruin Caprica. She's terrible. She writes emo stories.
-
Honestly, I didn't recognize the name. I had to ask a Whedon-buff who he was again. I'm still being yelled at by that buff, by the way.
-
are shit. It's like 1 or 2 scenes, most of it flashbacks. The extended Daybreak isn't changed very much from the aired episode, either.
-
What a world. Doomed twice over. Just kidding. Spike/Marsters was one the more entertaining things about the waining seasons of BUFFY. Still skeptical though.
-
Sure it was just a couple episodes but it's nice to be reminded that Marsters has some background in Sci-fi scenery chewing already.
-
Can understand why teenage girls like them but grown men? Sheesh.
-
Buffy was aimed towards both boys and girls, teens to seniors (it was a horror anthology after all). Angel was clearly intended for the male teen to thiry-something comic book crowd. I can't imagine the "average" teenage girl would be terribly interested in either show.
-
would be a mistake. he should be part of the cast, i might watch the show then.
-
No love for Gay or Bi heroes here. Mainly because the gum chewing pimply faced teeny bopper readers fear their growing sexuality.
Torchwood was one of Marsters best roles. Dark but not overly dark. Morally ambiguous. -
As in Collins? (ok, Barnabas, but still....)
Why not go all the way and name him Vlad? -

CAPRICA what now?
-
Venture Bros is a great show! This season is going to great!
-
A buffed-out 21 with a LARPing crew? Count me the fuck in!
-
I would have been down for that. IMO Tom Hardy is one of the major reasons Nemesis failed (but only one of 'em!). Patrick Stewart has a vibe, particularly as Jean Luc Picard. Whatever emotion he's portraying just exudes from his being. Hardy was boring and stiff. I totally agree that Marsters would have done a better job.
-
...to see those episodes, anyway. Make him a regular and I'll give it a season.
-
and sorta of cheesy Vancouver/SciFi than I wanted.
-
I don't have anything specific against Espenson. I've just noticed that more often than not when an episode has left me unsatisfied or the lynchpin of the plot comes apart upon reflection, Espenson's name is on the writing. It makes me less ehtusiastic about Caprica. I think it was when Herc was promoting the last BSG web series that I made the realisation. First, the web series had some serious plot holes, and then the episodes that were cited in these articles as being Espenson's, too, I'd think "yeah, I didn't really like that one either." Just saying. I wish it weren't true. But then, I guess Russell T. Davies's stories are usually a disappointment, and Steven Moffat can still write excellent episodes (formerly) under him as show runner.
-
because he is the "Fonzie" of the Buffyverse!
-
CHOMP!

I watched the miniseries and then watched the last episode
by lockesbrokenleg
The BSG miniseries was fantastic and cool. The last episode of bSG well, it was slow and dull, with some really good stuff in it. Bleh.
-
he was on Torchwood too, remember?
-
I hear nothing but complaints about her. I think she had a misstep with one of the BSG episodes towards the end, but for the most part, her writing record has been absolutely solid with some of the best Buffy and Angel episodes in the catalogue. I'd say she was easily the best writer of the series not named Joss Whedon. Some people are thrown off by her tone, and I admit, she had to rein it in a bit for BSG, but I'd still watch anything with her name on it.
-
Espenson left Angel and Buffy. She went on to ruin a season of Gilmore Girls. Then moved to Battlestar to ruin the seasons she touched.
Marti Noxon, in contrast, is doing Mad Men.
I love Marsters. Though he was great as Aldrin in Moonshot. He was great on Smallville. I'll watch anything he does, except Caprica. -
I love Buffy, Angel and Firefly, but two things about whedon-- 1) he has GODAWFUL taste in music, as we saw in the bronze. 2) I think he's the only one who thinks the black chick who was Jasmine and Zoe is drop dead gorgeous, as she is made out to be in the writing.
-
Loved Marsters as Spike...so guess I'll have to tune in just to watch him. He should have been in the True Blood cast!
-
He is pretty damn awesome as a audiobook reader for Dresden Files.
