Robert Downey Jr. To Play The Vampire Lestat??

I am – Hercules!! reported Friday a rumor that Robert Downey Jr. is in talks with Universal to take over the role of bisexual bloodsucking nobleman turned rock star Lestat Du Lioncort. The character was played in 1994's “Interview With A Vampire” by Tom Cruise and by Stuart Townsend in 2002's “Queen of the Damned,” both based on novels by Anne Rice. Rice has written 10 books in the Vampire Chronicles saga that features Lestat, but there’s no word on which, if any, the proposed new movie will be based. Will Downey make a good Lestat? Well, of course! Downey, Oscar-nominated for his roles as movie actors Charlie Chaplin and Kirk Lazarus, can do anything! Find all of Bloody Disgusting’s story on the matter here.

Robert Downey was in the movie U.S. Marshalls (1998).

    by GibsonUSA Returns

    I had totally forgotten that.

  • Aug. 17, 2009, 3:16 a.m. CST

He probably forgot he was in that U.S. Marshalls to.

    by ottomatic

When did he sober up? <p> Oh and I hope this isn't true. He's so much better then this shit.

  • Aug. 17, 2009, 3:17 a.m. CST

    I hope it's true!

    by DeadAtRecess

And that they make a proper sequel to Interview...that Queen of the damned film was awful. We need a good Vampire story where Vampires are still dangerous and they don't sparkle and whatnot...and Downey is just the man to pull off playing Lestat.

  • Aug. 17, 2009, 3:20 a.m. CST

    This has gotta be bullshit.

    by NomoredirtyjokespleaseweareYanks

Downey is to old to play Lestat. As a fan of the books Queen of the Damned was pretty much one of the worst adaptions I have ever witnessed. Interview with a Vampire was excellent and Tom Criuse was fine as Lestat. They sure blew their chance at a great series of films. This just seems wrong.

  • Aug. 17, 2009, 3:22 a.m. CST

Dammit, if the Cruister can be dyslexic, why can't I????

    by NomoredirtyjokespleaseweareYanks

This still seems like bullshit. Lestats a pretty boy. Robert looks like a Quato that grows on Mickey Rourkes stomach.

  • Aug. 17, 2009, 3:23 a.m. CST

No, he won't make a good Lestat!

    by fatjesuschrysler

And I love Robert Downey Jr., but this just wouldn't work IMO. We have a good new vampire story in Let The Right One In. Nice to see vampires treated as "monsters" again.

It'll be said a bazillion times, but it's no less true...

    by JonRD463

RDJ is a fine actor in certain roles, and Lestat isn't one of them. Tom Cruise surprised a hell of a lot of people, but he's got a baby face that's believable. RDJ is a little too rough around the edges. Stuart Townesend could pull it off if they gave him blond hair and grey eyes. While Queen of the Damned was abyssmal, the diamond in the rough pile of shit was that Townesend's characterization was good, even if he didn't look the part. To be honest, I'm not up to speed on the latest brat pack crop of young actors, so I really don't know who would be good in the role. I just know it's not RDJ. Sorry, guy. You're an awesome Tony Stark, but...

  • Aug. 17, 2009, 4:25 a.m. CST

    Lestat's bisexual?

    by MattmanReturns

I never read the books, so I don't know, but in the Tom Cruise movie he didn't seem to have any sexual urges whatsoever, towards men or women. He enjoyed the company of Brad Pitt, but that seemed more like a friendship thing to me, like he wanted someone he could talk to and philosophize with. I dunno maybe someone else here knows more on this...

  • Aug. 17, 2009, 4:59 a.m. CST

    by DickJones

If I remember correctly, in the books, Anne Rice's vampires were, for the most part asexual. Given their immortal state, her vampires were more concerned with companionship for the reasons you mentioned. I was a huge fan of the Vampire Chronicals series and would love to see a "reboot" for the film franchise. Just no RDJ please!

  • Aug. 17, 2009, 5:15 a.m. CST

    by Crow3711

Honestly people, let's be happy with what we can get. I think we can all agree Downey will be much mor enjoyable than at least 85% of the other people they could have gone with. I can honestly see some studio exec trying to pitch this Zac Efron. Let's be grateful, okay?

    Too Long In the Tooth

    by Lordgorp

‘Body Thief’ onwards? Or a full re-boot? The first 3 novels have been done. . . . Downey JR? Nah. . .a strange choice for Lestat – someone younger has to be cast as he was ‘made a vampire’ in his youth not middle age. I also pictured Lestat as more ‘nordic’ – Tom Cruise looked more ‘Lestat’ IMO.

  • Aug. 17, 2009, 6:20 a.m. CST

    Porco Drunko

    by Lordgorp

I’d go along with that! Works great for ‘True Blood’

  • Aug. 17, 2009, 6:32 a.m. CST

Yeah Vampire/Witches TV series would be great.

    by lutz

Since all the characters more or less cross over after the third book it would make a great series. A series would save a lot of doubling up from the books too as you could tell the Marius/Armand/Pandora stories at the same time without having to hear it from each persons point of view.

  • Aug. 17, 2009, 6:34 a.m. CST

    He's too old.

    by The Bunglermoose

He'd nail the personality, but dude... Lestat's like, what, 20 when he gets made a vampire? It's been a while since I read the books, but I know he was young. This won't work.

  • Aug. 17, 2009, 6:46 a.m. CST

    by fatjesuschrysler

Yes, they're portrayed as being extremely sensual, but they lost the ability to procreate when they became vampires, thus making them asexual. I don't deny that there are strong bisexual/homosexual overtones in the story.

    Get HARRY to do it.

    by tiggr009

Nothing says Lestat quite like Harry. No one would see that coming. But seriously, IMO Cruise ruined "Interview" - just overacted it like most things he does. You can get away with it stuff like Top Gun and Jerry McGuire, but a dark film like that was just over the top. I appreciate that Lestat was sort of like that in the book, but I think Cruise's portrayal was too thick and distracting. I think it would be very possible to cast a relatively unknown for the lead role - the movie will sell itself on name alone. I vote no for RDJ, despite thinking he is a brilliant actor.

    He'd be a good Lestat - but he's a bit old

    by VAwitch

This is another case of perfect actor, wrong age for character. Lestat, in all the books I've read, was turned relatively young (early-mid 20's). Any way you cut it, RDJ looks older than that.<P><P>Which is a pity, because I think he could get the moodiness of Lestat down as well as his sensuality & occasional 'corniness'.

Asexual in Early Books, Pedophiles in Later Books

    by _Maltheus_

<p>The sensuality in the early books revolved around blood. Rice made it clear that their dicks were useless. Once you take sex out of the equation, you can't really call him bisexual.</p> <p>That being said, as the series went on, Rice decided to turn every Vampire into a pedophile. And although sex still wasn't an option, the books did seem to lose that sexless vibe. Even the blood seemed to matter less.</p>

  • Aug. 17, 2009, 8:37 a.m. CST

    Anne Rice

    by KoolerThanJesus

Rice divorced herself from the Vampire Chronicles years ago following her Christian conversion. She is just interested in how much money she can suck out of them any more. RDJ is the hot actor right now, so she doesn't care that he's not Lestat. Lestat was 21 when he turned into a vampire and a blonde French man. Did anyone read the last two Vampire Chronicles? They are about making money and not the story.

A young Rutger Hauer as Lestat

    by brothernumberone

Anne rice later envisioned Lestat to resemble Rutger Hauer. Not when she as first writing. Considering Interview was written in 1973 and Hauer was nowhere the star he was to become. It was later on in Queen of the Damned, written in 1988, that she hints at how she prefers Lestat to look aesthetically. Bringing in comparisons to Rutger Hauer and also mentioning Blade Runner.

And E-Branch would turn into some James Bondian gadget fest, with all sorts of "hip" vampire slaying toys, like something out of Van Helsing. No, leave those fucking books alone.

They should make a meta movie

    by David Cloverfield

Vampire seduces teen girl, he's hot, misunderstood, maybe even hunted. Peril, difficult love affair, the Twighlight/True Blood stuff. Then at the end, when he had his fun with the naive little girl, he massacres her family, her friends, everybody she knows. Then, maybe she mans up and stakes him. Date Human!

    by wookie1972

Never though I'd say that, but Downey is 44 this year. Not exactly youthful. And btw, it's technically possible that Rice based Lestat on Rutger Hauer; he made a minor splash with Turkish Delight in 1973, which was nominated for the foreign language Oscar.

    by IAmLegolas

and if they are going to reboot Anne Rice's vamps, they should do it right as a cable TV series, although now it has a lot of competition even though, on paper, it's the superior material to True Blood, Twilight, Buffy, Angel and The Vampire Diaries that suck at Rice's teet. RESPECT!

    Anne Rice Can't write.

    by VermithraxPejorative

Anne Rice is a terrible writer, I think anyone who thinks she is a quality writer has to be insane. It's jsut drivel. I must admit, Interview with the vampire was a good film but that had more to do with Neil Jordan. Even that book was okay but the rest of the books read of someone who is self indulgent with zero editing, someone who has trouble crafting worlds with words and tries to describe every insignifant detail to compensate for lack of writing ability. This stuff never ceases to amaze me how people flock for this crud.

    Remember when Cruise was cast

    by Bass Ackwards

Rice was practically the leader in the protest against him, and it actually turned out to be a pretty great flick. I was always bummed when Jordan/Cruise/Pitt didn't come back for sequels. And Rice isn't changing the world of literature for any means, but she does get some credit, at the time Interview came out I don't think vampires were quite the fad they are now, and her take on the vampire mythology was unique and has influenced a lot of the vampire tales still coming out. That said, after Queen of the Damned, the books really do take a turn for the worse. And if her vampires can't get it up then how do you explain Intercourse With a Vampire? Or was that movie not part of the official canon?

I am not a big reader, but I read her Vampire Chronicles up to Blood and Gold, minus the Armand and Merrick books. I found them pretty engrossing and she has a fantastic way with words. All of your criticisms toward her could be leveled at JRR Tolkien, and I see her as the Tolkien of modern vampire literature. She created this huge mythology and had a massive impact on the vampire genre, much like Tolkien did in the fantasy genre. But hell, for all I know you might think Tolkien sucks too. Different strokes, I guess.

    Brilliant actor, bad casting...

    by Cellar Door

...and yes, all Anne Rice Vampires I've read are totally asexual. Drinking blood is orgasmic to them on a level than completely dwarfs intercourse. They also loose the standard culture barriers of gender identity. I'm a big fan of the core series of Rice Vampire books. And I dearly love the film Interview with the Vampire.<p>And I agree that Lestat's mannerism we're good in Queen of the Damned and Aliyah was tragically beautiful but that movie sucked giant ass. The whole blury cam kung fu fight at the rock concert? Holy shit that was bad. But then, if you read the's unfilmable without being ass...basically.<p>Not to mention the best book is 'The Vampire Lestat' (the second in the series) which was so glossed over in QotD as to be insulting. QotD has a whole lot of other shit going on that wasn't even implied in the movie.<p>Best thing about Queen of the Damned is Jonathan Davis's music for Lestat's band and Marguerite Moreau, who's just a hottie...<p>Lestat is supposed to be 23 years old give or way a 40-something year old dude could play him...even Cruise, who was excellent as Lestat, didn't overtly portray Lestat. Think David Bowie mixed with Jim Morrison mixed with etc, etc, etc

  • Aug. 17, 2009, 12:46 p.m. CST

    Heeeeeyy...Jonathan Rhys Meyers

    by Blue_Demon

There's a good one G_Gentile! Did you guys see him in "Gormenghast?" He's perfect for this role.<p>As for Lestat's sexuality, I think he was sleeping in the same bed with a man he called "Nicki" or "Niki" before he became a vampire. If I remember, Magnus yanked him out of bed as he slept next to this guy. At the time I read this, years ago, I simply chalked it up to European culture (kissing on the cheek, etc.) and didn't think about the sexuality issue, but now...who knows? Maybe as the novels went on, people started reading "bi-sexual" into them and Anne Rice ran with it.

    "Love her" not "lover"

    by Cellar Door

They all call each other their 'beloved' etc etc...but they cannot engage in the act of sex whatsoever. Lestat even makes mention of his "useless" penis in both TVL and Body Thief (if I remember correctly; they don't have any normal body functions whatsoever..can't eat or drink real food, fingernails look like glass, cry blood, pale marble or alabaster skin unless they've fed in which case they look "normal", etc, etc). They are sensual, yes, sexual, yes, absurdly and fully gothic romantics to the one (almost), but basically complete eunuchs (male & female vamps both) with their entire sex drive driven by their condition and thirst, etc. Lestat describes drinking blood as many times more potent than intercourse, etc, etc...<p>Armand never calls Claudia Louis's "lover"...Louis, in fact, calls her his "daughter" and she calls him her "dark father" or some such other gothic pronoun. Even if in the script, that shit would never fly in modern American cinema any more than the uncut version of "The Professional" (read: Leon) would with a young girl with a crush on a hitman, etc.<p>I'm a Rice-ian the series 4 times? I think...3 for sure at last count...<p>And yes, her writing is tough for the non-inclined (she's originally romance obviously and I'm not a fan of that genre) but if you can make it, read The Vampire Lestat...the series peaked with that book methinks...QotD is a good book and the others aren't bad either (Vampire Armand is a good one) but my favorite was Vampire Lestat...good stuff!<p>Now, I could be wrong but I'd have to go to the script to believe a 400 year old vampire called a 60 year old child vampire the "lover" of a almost 100 year old vampire (at the time) using a word that depicts quite distinctly an act they are incapable of and ambivalent to. But I haven't read it in years and don't remember the script verbatim, and could be wrong...

Lestat was/is tall blonde and handsome. He looks like a French Brad Pitt...and yes, I think it would have made a lot more sense to have reversed the Lestat and Louis roles in Interview. Anne Rice books are always homo-erotic, though the vampires are suppose to be asexual. It's not to oftne in the book you will find a vampire feeding on a female, though it will happen in passing. Finally ...

    by onemanarmy

I only say finally in hopes that ANYTHING more true to the source than that bullshit on film Queen of the Damned is an improvement. And for the record Cellar Door wins the TB as Rice's vampires are clearly asexual if you've actually read any of the books.

  • Aug. 18, 2009, 11:02 a.m. CST

    Yes...Vamps are way overplayed...but yet..

    by Cellar Door

True Blood is turning out to be really good...and I didn't get into the first few episodes.<p>Interview, to me, is really a fluke vampire movie. Rice, who wrote the screenplay, supposedly was incensed when she heard Pitt and Cruise were being cast...until she saw a demo'd scene or something. She had said something like "It's like casting Tom Sawyer and Huck Fin as Lestat and Louis", etc, etc. She was obviously wrong and both Pitt and Cruise brought there A game. I still think Lestat is probably Cruise's best role to date...he owns Lestat and outside of the phyiscal differences (Lestat is not short nor stocky), he really pulled a great interpretation of the character.<p>The "gay" thing or "bisexual" thing was really just a play on extremes in cinema I believe. The old paradigm of male/female, old/young, moral/amoral fade with time. Claudia was not Louis's lover but she was his equal; an old woman in the body of a child, etc. Imagine what it would be like to be hundreds or thousands of years old. We cannot even truly ponder what living that long would do to the psyche, how somebody would survive or acclimate, how things seemingly important to you now would be meaningless a hundred years from now. Things that we think of as critical or even undeniable fall away into irrelevancy when you've been alive for a thousand years. Think of it like when you stopped playing with toys..first it was to spite, then it was ambivalence, and now there is no desire whatsoever to sit in a dirt pile setting up GI-Joe figs and mouthing the sound effects of gun fire and explosions. Some of us might game on a table with measured moves and dice rolls and strategy but none of us "adults" are likely to sit, especially by ourselves, in the backyard dirt pit blowing cardboard bases to confetti bits with imaginary missiles and choreographing intricate ninja combat with 5" pose-able figures.<p>As for casting, even a young RJD doesn't fit the physicality of Lestat. He's likely got more than enough talent to interpret moreso than all other interpretations combined but yet Lestat is almost androgynous after he becomes a vampire. A true and unrepentant hedonist. Physically, I think of a young David Bowie...effete, almost feminine looking but yet powerful enough to crush your skull or snap your neck with his bare hand. RDJ strolls...Lestat slinks. RDJ could easily play a Marius, or even one of the ancients but not Lestat, Louis, or Armand.<p>Lestat was like 23 when he became a vampire. Louis was like 24/25 and Armand was like 17 or 18! (all in the books). Banderas was excellent casting but again, not remotely physically bearing the part. Same for all of them really (Louis had curly black/brown hair, etc).<p>But yet Interview with the Vampire is still one of my favorite "standard" vampire movies of late. I'd love to see Jordan return to the series with a standard release of The Vampire Lestat (and not bastardize it into a 20 minute flashback in QotD).<p>Casting is a tough call but it would need talent like RDJ to continue to quality I think. There's been some suggestions as to who could play Lestat but I think many are still going in the wrong direction. Lestat, beyond being tall, is not physically imposing...his menace comes from his style and the way he carries himself. He is hedonism personified. RDJ could be Nicholas is he was about 20 years younger...he could be Magnus but that would be a waste. Marius is the best choice pretty much for RDJ. As for Lestat? I have no unknown perhaps?

  • Aug. 18, 2009, 5:21 p.m. CST

DiCaprio would be a good choice.

    by mojoman69

If you saw him in Man in the Iron mask, that pretty much was Lestat. Pretty, blond, cruel, ruthless.

    Once and for all, bisexual

    by neoroosta

In Tale of the Body Thief, when Lestat "borrows" a human body for a while, he asks his human friend, David Talbot, to have sex with him before he gets his body back. Once that happens, he will no longer be able to do it, as vampires do not have functioning sexual organs. David Talbot was a 75 year-old man, and no, he was not an ageless vampire. He was an old man, and thankfully declines. I stopped reading the Vampire Chronicles after this book, even though I liked it. They were just getting too gross, and I didn't want my image of Lestat to be degraded any further.
