I don't know what the FUCK the deal is with cameron coloring all his movies blue. It's pretty goddamn annoying. The only film I can think of in which he restrained himself on that was the first Terminator. That's actually lit very naturally and one of the reasons it's by far his best film. Everything else, even going back to his Corman days, is just saturated with blue light.

Time for some hard-edged sci-fi action like Cameron can deliver, not cartoon bullshit like Transformers and GI Joe. I like the look of the avatar; it appears serious in design, not cartoony, and not some comedy Jar Jar creation as some other cretin posted on another talkback. As regards it looking too 'human' - there are reasons for this in the story, both on an audience identification level, and in the scientific background behind the story.BTW, Trannyformers Apologist, I'm probably wasting my time here, but are you fucking retarded, or just inbred? Stop spreading complete lies - Sam Worthington has had nothing but praise for this film, INCLUDING the story, as I called you up for in another talkback. You know, by providing a source quote from an interview. Please post proof of what you say, or stop mouthing off. Oh, the early scriptment - it doesn't SOUND like shit. It IS fantastic. A shill and a sell-out - actually, he's not a sell-out, because if you've never had any integrity to begin with, then you can't fall, and CHUD has always been a den of assholes. GI Joe - 8.5 out of 10. Dark Knight sucks. Reviews T4 and gives it four stars in Empire magazine, then shits on it on his website. An agenda against Fox. Anyone who trusts these webmasters' opinions needs their heads examined. They are bought off with free swag, and quite frankly the big studios know how to play these guys like a fiddle now. They know all too well that these people are social retards who want a place at the cool kids' table, so they reel them in with the proverbial carrot. Hook, line, and sinker.

Cool it buddy! We're just voicing our opinions on the image released and a few people, myself included, think that Cameron has overhyped the technology used to make this film. Engaging story will be seen in the cinema, right now we have nothing to go on aside from a shallow plot summary. Proper judgments will come when we all inevitably see this film. Even if it sucks, it'll make millions due to curiosity alone. Maybe that's the revolutionary thing about it??

    Reports of lackluster dialogue .
"Dances with Wolfs" in space story blatant ripoff of 4 or 5 movies.
    Dark Crystal mullet Furries .
Outrageous "game changer, epic masterpiece, photoreal" hype .
Sam Worthington told IESB that the story wasn't anything spectacular"wasn't the be all end all."..
Cameron preaching to us:..Environmentalism ,exploitation of the Native Americans and probably slavery. (Na'vi are mostly played by African Americans.....wonder why?....)
Fox and Cameron don't seem to want to promote "Avatar Day" Nobody I know has heard of "AVATAR DAY".

We're all entitled to be as underwhelmed as we like. But as someone who has been on these boards every day since day one I am just a touch shocked at the reaction this time. I am utterly confident that I will have a pretty awesome experience with this film. And I say that being aware of 'potential' issues with CGI, cheesy elements and so on. But this is James Cameron and we should be respectful and expectant on this site. And enjoy the build up and hope that it will deliver (which I think I will). But yeah it's good to temper enthusiasm. But I have yet to see anything that really impresses me, and maybe that's good, but I still think we should be shown at least one thing that looks totally and utterly original and breathtaking because as of yet, we have not. I have faith it will be a good movie, but so far the only thing making me want to see it is it's Cameron doing sci-fi.

Cameron and his team really have been creating a completely alien world over the past 5 years, from the tiniest blade of grass or insect to the 1000 foot trees.

The Pandora scenes really are dreamlike. Most of the haters will be convinced after seeing the trailer, which should provide more of a story context and will be more "hype-inducing" than the relatively disonnected (albeit amazing) scenes shown at Comic-Con.

    by turdontherun

You're still full of shit."The lack of hype and positive buzz from 6500 Comic con attendees". - Blatant lies. Reaction to the comic con footage has ranged from subdued positivity to outright jubilation - look around the web and at different sites for opinions and reactions. Not one person has said anything particularly negative, not even that disingenuous and biased fraud, Devin Faraci."The early scriptment was terrible" - more nonsense. The early scriptment was absolutely incredible. Try reading it, douchebag. It's the reason why some of us are actually informed and excited about this movie in the first place - and that was ONLY a rough scriptment."Reports of lackluster dialogue" - uh, where, exactly? And from a couple of primarily visual scenes shown at Comic Con? Please. The dialogue is solid and appropriate to what was shown so far, from what I hear of peoples' opinions. Expecting Mamet or Shakespearean soliloquies from a couple of comic con scenes? Talk about clutching at straws."Dances with Wolves" in space story blatant ripoff of 4 or 5 movies." - Anything can be comapared to anything, and you can make any kind of generic statement. It has absolutely nothing to do with specifics or good storytelling. I could just say D9 is an ALien Nation in SA rip-off, or The Matrix is a Ghost in the Shell and Johnny Memonic rip-off, couldn't I? Utterly meaningless statements."Sam Worthington told IESB that the story wasn't anything spectacular"wasn't the be all end all.".." - wrong again, and blatantly dishonest misappropriation of quotes. He was talking about the absurd expectations of hype when he said "not the be all and end all", nothing to do with the story. From the very same interview: Interviwer: "All I've heard about is the motion capture of Avatar and how it's going to change everything, but I'm curious about the story, how does that speak to you?"

Sam Worthington: "With Jim it's always about story first, as I said, he's very direct. You can put all the bells and whistles you like on it, like with Terminator, but if it's not about revealing some of the human spirit... I can't see, people are going to chew him out. Jim's very in touch with personal relationships. What it means to be, especially in Avatar, what it means to be a man, I can take that from it. Help people who are affected by bullies. I think all those kind of themes and a sense of hope. If you say all that, and then surround it with great technology and fucking whiz-bang explosions, then you're on the path to making something people will remember when they leave the cinema.""Cameron preaching to us:..Environmentalism ,exploitation of the Native Americans and probably slavery. (Na'vi are mostly played by African Americans.....wonder why?....)" - This will be 'preachy' in the same way that T2 and Abyss was preachy - ie. action and drama first and foremost, and subtext there for those that want it. And if you're a neo-con red state inbred that's offended by addressing such pertinent themes (and we can see this from some of the imbeciles over in the D9 talback), then fuck you. As for the Navi being played by mostly ethnic actors - that'll be something to do with accurate motion-capture of actor's faces and thus 'exotic' features, won't it? Nothing to do with making a fucking statement. There are also white actors playing Avatars/ na'vi, and latino, indian, and black actors playing earth troops and scientists."I hope it flops and FOX fires Rothman." - Avatar might be funded and distributed by Fox, but it has one lord and master - James Cameron. This isn't Wolverine or some other Fox product. Cameron is powerful and successful enough and steel willed enough that this movie is all his vision, and he has accordingly been left to his own devices. So no, I'm not hoping this 'flops' just to teach Rothman a lesson, or some other mis-applied and childish 'boycott Fox' nonsense. Some other Fox cluster-fuck like Wolverine 2, rushed to meet a release date and that any generic director could handle- since the director is negligible-can do that.
In ceremonious conclusion - get stuffed, you cunt. You are a boil that needs to be lanced.

Cameron's earned the benefit of the doubt..

    by pdennett316

He really has. T1 and T2, Aliens, The Abyss, True Lies, and yes, even Titanic have earned him the right to have his work judged when it's seen, not based on a couple of stills and imagined hype.
Perhaps he overhyped the effects work and vision a little, but I'd imagine that comes from being excited about his vision. Nothing wrong with that. If nerds choose to take his words as absolute gospel then bitch and moan about how it doesn't live up to THEIR expectations, then they deserve disappointment as well as a slap on the dick.
Not enough is known about the story or any particular scenes to judge the movie properly, and if a director of Cameron's calibre has not earned the 'wait and see' treatment, then no director should.

can take 12 years and still get my benefit of the doubt was Kubrick, and even then some people were disappointed with Eyes Wide Shut (personally I loved it). Cameron is no Hitchcock, no Kubrick, not even a frickin' David Lean (although he wants to be so badly). As for why the debate is so hot, it;s because the walking ego is selling this as the game-changer, talking about pre and post Avatar eras. Well, screw him, I say.

So here's the 30 second version: in the future, humankind wants to take resources from a distant world (filled with aggressive deadly creatures and a 9-10 ft indigenous species called the Navi). To smooth over their intrusion, humans use a hybrid Navi that they can 'inhabit' (hence the term Avatar) - they project their consciousness into them. A wheelchair-bound soldier's mind is thrust into a Navi and he is on their world when he is attacked by one of the dinosaur-like inhabitants (kind of like a rhino). A beautiful Navi warrior woman sees him and also notices that a small fairy-like species of their planet is drawn to him (which is a sign in their culture of a prophecy about a foreign Navi who will lead their people against the intruders). The Navi-inhabited soldier falls for this Navi warrior princess and resists his former colleagues as they bring mech-like equipment and begin invading (and raping the land). This is the general plot of Avatar. You'll find summaries all over the web.

This is from the Avatar Wikipedia entry.

    * SPOILER * SPOILER * SPOILER *

The story’s protagonist, Jake Sully, is a former Marine who was wounded and paralyzed from the waist down in combat on Earth. In order to participate in the Avatar program, which will give him a healthy body, Jake agrees to travel to Pandora, a lush rainforest environment filled with incredible life forms – some beautiful, many terrifying. Pandora is also the home to the Na’vi, a humanoid race that lives at what humans would consider to be a primitive level, but are actually much more evolutionarily advanced than humans from a human perspective. Ten feet tall, with tails and blue skin that sparkles, the Na’vi live harmoniously within their unspoiled world. But as humans encroach on Pandora in search of valuable minerals, the Na’vi’s very existence is threatened – and their warrior abilities unleashed.

Jake has unwittingly been recruited to become part of this encroachment. Since humans are unable to breathe the air on Pandora, they have created genetically-bred human-Na’vi hybrids known as Avatars. The Avatars are living, breathing bodies in the real world, controlled by a human driver through a technology that links the driver’s mind to the Avatar body. On Pandora, through his Avatar body, Jake can be whole once again. Moreover, he falls in love with a young Na’vi woman, Neytiri, whose beauty is matched by her ferocity in battle.

As Jake slides deeper into becoming one of her clan, he finds
himself caught between the military-industrial forces of Earth, and the Na’vi – forcing him to choose sides in an epic battle that will decide the fate of an entire world.

This will be the new "Blu-Ray Vs. HD-DVD"

    by llghtst0rmer

Next spring, those of us who have refused to shit all over this movie we haven't yet seen, made by a filmmaker who has a spotless track record (Yeah, I said spotless - if you don't like Titanic, suck it,) will be having a nice, healthy laugh at all the asshats predicting utter failure from Avatar.

You're not impressed? Fine. But if you've already written this film off as crap, you're a fool, plain and simple.

I won't pretend to be an industry expert, but some things you can kind of see from a mile away. A Michael Bay movie will be loud, ADHD-style crap with a good trailer, A Rob Schneider movie will be straight-to-video-level garbage, A Chris Nolan Batman movie will actually be worth the cost of your tickets and then some, and anything Pixar makes will be an enjoyable, well-told story. Oh, and James Cameron only makes movies that redefine what all blockbusters subsequently aim to be. It's a fact.

I can't help but be reminded of the time about 2 years ago when the talkbacks ran red with the blood of the Format War debate between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. It seemed like whatever side you took, the other guys were nothing but brand-loyalist idiots who couldn't see the facts in front of their eyes. It was easy enough for me to see it, though - Blu-Ray had more studios on board and that was it. I knew they would win it. I didn't care who made what - Sony or Microsoft - I could just tell, "If these guys only have, like 3 studios' support and those guys have everyone else's, I'm going with those guys." And I just sat back and watched all the HD-DVD disciples argue and scream and shout about how wrong us Blu-Ray people were, and making predictions like "Six months from now, BR movies will be nothing more than a footnote. They'll be gone and no one will even remember them." (My personal favorite dipshit argument was, "No one knows WTF a "Blu-Ray" is. Everyone knows what HD and DVD are. It's in the name. Blu-Ray can't POSSIBLY win the format war.")

Anyway, all I'm saying is... we'll see in a few months. And if I'm wrong, I'll admit it. If AVATAR hasn't made its money back by January 15th, I'll stand up here in the talkbacks and declare myself the Douchebag Asshat of AICN. My prediction, though, is that it will be a HUGE success, and even if it doesn't win Cameron another Best Picture Oscar, critics will be giving the film its due respect for being a thoroughly enjoyable, intelligent action/adventure movie. Surely, though, certain talkbackers on this thread will still sit around claiming it's God-awful crap that no one in their right mind could possibly enjoy. And you will hopefully enjoy being the proud kings of your own little islands.

Arguing with them is a waste of time as they have already made up their minds, and they ignore the vast majority of positive to amazed reactions to the footage shown, while focusing on one still or imags from a computer game. Its actually quite funny and entertaining seeing people actively looking for things to hate "its too blue", "I have nt been shown everything so it must suck" etc......

    by fassbinder79

Where The Wild Things Are had some shots that looked amazing out of context.

So far nothing I've seen in the promotional materials for Avatar has impressed me. I think Cameron is building up hype to the point where the film won't live up to even the most restrained of expectations.

He should not have taken so much time off from directing either.

Even though I think the Phantom Menace comments are a slight bit unfair I think its troubling how many of my favorite directors (i.e. Olive Stone and Cameron) have lost the skill they once had.

But its also premature and overdone for even myself to criticize when I haven't seen anything from the film yet (i.e. trailers).

If it delivers I'll be the first to come on here and say, "James Cameron is KING OF THE WORLD.

But there are a lot of other films I'm more interested in seeing right now (i.e. Book Of Eli, Wild Things, Tron Legacy, Nolan's Inception)

Avatar BETTER own all our asses after all this hype.

    by llghtst0rmer

Um, genius... you know the other people on the Talkback that point out your foolishness... and we've ALL heard of Avatar day.

The "Avatar Day" presentation will be more than successful. You don't need to worry about it. Tickets will be enough of a challenge to acquire, and the theatres will be quite full. (I'd say "Sold Out," but the tix are free.) The internet and the "blogosphere" are the only outlets they're using to promote the event, and that's all they'll need. Those of us who want tickets will get them, and there are many of us. Empty seats will not be a problem.

    1. It's easy to have a spotless record when you don't actually make that many movies. 2. I'm sorry, but the Abyss was the most boring movie I've ever seen, and I've seen Meet Joe Black. 3. I'm going to get shit on for this, but Aliens had very weak dialogue. Decent action, but the script was lame. 4. He's had exactly two original movies, and one of those ripped off Harlan Ellison. 5. The guy has the biggest ego of any director I've ever heard of, and that's saying a lot.

I dont suck JC's dick but no one has any clue other than those that saw some of the footage at comicon and those that are immersed in their own self perpetated "eyeball fucking" hype, so who knows. Keep complaining, no one gives a shit. But shouldn't you keep your fingers crossed that it actually turns out good? Wouldn't it be so much better to spent the 12 bucks you will inevitably end up spending on something that ends up being good????? Rather than trying to drive a film into the ground that you ACTUALLY HAVE NO IDEA what its going to be? Isn't the prospect of it being "eyeball fucking" more exciting than it being retarded and forgettable? Again fuck JC, I dont give a shit. I like the good ones, whatever on the bad ones. Fuck your cynical little know it all bullshit judgement based on nothing. How many movies are forgettable, who gives a shit about them so fuck it shut your whiny bullshit up...if its bad, which it could be, another one bites the dust, if its awesome we can all revel in it, hopefully.

RE: for some reason FINGERS are the bain of CGI

    by codename

I agree. In the fingers alone, you have 14 different segments to animate. On top of that, there are small nuances and movements that happen in the hand. The hands are very expressive and very subtle at the same time. What I'm seeing is that the animators are working too hard to animate the hands to the point where they lose their "subtleness". The weight maps, or CGI skin basically, on the hands still haven't been coded by the programmers to the point where you get the realistic folds and flesh bends. Then after you master writing the code/plug-ins for the hands, you have the whole hand physics thing to deal with. Pay attention to all the cg hands (not using the Disney animation principles, or not going for the exaggerated style) in the industry today and you'll notice that they are kind of off. It's weird. Having said that, I'm starting to doubt this film, too. One thing that gives me hope is the way Jim portrays emotions in his films, and his genius editing skills. I'm banking on that.. but Jim is getting older and he's been out of the scene for awhile. He's making a film for a different generation now. We'll see. I'm hoping it turns out. But I'm resting more on Jim losing his touch just because it happens.

As far as him topping Aliens/Terminator/ and True Lies, yeah he most certainly did with Titanic. *You* may not think so, but the 11 Oscars it won, all-time high gross it made, technical wizardry and countless die-hard fans beg to differ. And those are the facts. Oh yeah, and that was his last movie wasn't it? So the question really is, not will Cameron ever top the 3 you listed (which he also did with T2, and and also The Abyss on a technical level), but will any director top what Cameron did? And I doubt Cameron really will be that torn up if Avatar doesn't make all it's money back, he's got more than enough dough and clout to make consecutive flops and still make movies til he dies. I'm sure he's not that worried, so why are you?

Even shit like THE ABYSS, which nobody seemed to "get" when it first came out has since been revered as a classic (particularly when he cut the full ending back in). Hype

    by yiannis

All these various comments about Avatar being "overhyped" are pretty far off the mark. People who complain about things like this - one measly picture resulting in an entire post - seem to forget that they're on a movie site - in particular, a geek-orientated movie site. Every single person I know who doesn't visit sites like AICN had no idea this movie even existed, or that James Cameron was even working on a new film. The only hype surrounding this film has been aimed purely at geeks. The only places footage has been shown so far is in Amsterdam (tech convention with handy nearby coffee shops) and San Diego (Comic Con), both highly geek-orientated events with little in the way of "casual" attendees. There's a simple reason for this:WE'RE THE ONES WHO ARE SUPPOSED TO GET EXCITED ABOUT THIS SORT OF THING!!I get that people like to complain and bitch, especially on this site, but I just think there needs to come a time when people say "I'm a movie geek, this is a massive, geek-orientated event movie by James Cameron, I'm going to be there and be excited to see it." If you don't like spoilers, don't click on the story links on this and other sites. Ignore the hype if you want to go in fresh, or lap it up if you're the sort who has to know everything in advance.Unfortunately, while there are obviously a whole bunch of hypocrites who will slate the movie in anonymous talkback but still rush to see it on opening night, it seems as though there genuinely are a number of us who can't bring themselves to get excited about this. I think I know why.A previous post talked about "memories of 99". We all know what that means. I've got this odd feeling that the massive letdown Mr Lucas gave us has scarred the collective psyche of the geek community so badly that people are actually AFRAID to get excited about something. Amateur psychology 101 maybe, but I know for an absolute fact that, if this movie had come out in 1998, every last one of you would be booking a week off work to queue for your ticket.Guys, this isn't Lucas, ok? While now is not the time for a lengthy rant on how I feel about Mr George, it's safe to say that KOTCS confirmed for most of you what I had known for a while. Lucas is a shill who fluked his way (with way more help than the insecure fuck would ever admit) to two good ideas and milked them for every last cent so he could sit alone in his big empty house surrounded by his money. Cameron, on the other hand, is a genuine visionary who knows what the fans want - not least a compelling story to go with their action - and has always delivered it. Which one would you trust not to let you down?

Just in case someone comes back with "Avatar HAS been hyped in the mainstream media you're wrong I'm right so there!", yes I am aware that the film has been covered by major news (I caught a feature about the game on BBC news the other day), but you need to put it into perspective. On major news it's a short piece buried somewhere near the back with little to grab the eye or generate interest. Here and on other similar sites it's headline news with thousands of people discussing it live online.

One day, they'll make a star wars tv show, with a cgi luke and leia and han, and they will look photoreal. The script will be amazing, better than the original trilogy, and it'll last for 10 seasons. Normal people, and critics will love it. People will enjoy it, buy the toys, and go on with their lives. On the other hand, the few people on the aicn talkback won't like it at all. They will despise it with every fiber of their little hearts. They will damn the cgi, and call the aliens racist. They will say darth vader is a pussy, and that leia looks like a tranny. "Bring back Lucas!" and other such statements will litter these pages. The talkbackers will do this because they have no soul, and by then most of them will have comminted suicide due to depression anyway.

underwhelming as all hell. I'll reserve final judgement until I see the film, but man this is not what I was thinking it would look like. As someone said above, they denied those early elf-like designs, but that's what we've got here. Are we sure this isn't a fake?I also am not thrilled with the HD sharpness that is evident on Worthington. It is that over-sharpened image that a lot of movies shot in high-def, but shot badly, not taking into account that the image can be softened to a more filmic feel with in-camera or post production filters. Seriously, I've gotten better looking (in filmic terms, not actual resolution) images out of my $3,000 HDV camera. Maybe Cameron is purposely going for a super sharp look here, but I just don't like that kind of cinematography.

    Turd on the Run rules!

    by sherlock_junior

He totally trashed the noobs statements in a Cameron way.
That means: constructive and verbal brilliance.

I feel sorry for people that trash Cameron's vision and movies..
That must be lacking in the soul and enjoyements of LIFE.

How can one NOT appreciate Terminator/Terminator 2/Aliens/The Abbys/True Lies

    That puzzles the mind...

Cameron is a true author who envisions his own unique worlds.
He writes and directs his own stories. He always sets new standards. Creates logical action sequences that follow straight lines, never loose track of weight and substance, interact threedimensional with surroundings and are perfectly captured and edited in excellent compositions instead of shacky banana shots.

He colours his shots like a painter (everybody was using Matrix colours when that movie came out, but Cameron had his own unique colour schemes a decade earlier. While the rest of the blockbuster filmmakers where still shooting in plain colours)

    He invented entire genres:

Tech Noir = a combination of sci-fi/tech and film noir(for Terminator)

the Space Marine genre - long before Halo there was Aliens.
Cameron was the first to combine the classic war movie themes with the elements of sci-fi. (that is in movies)

The best thing he does is combine kick-ass action with compelling stories that suck you in.

He takes the fantastic and treats it like real.

Take a look at the reanimation sequence in The Abyss. Pure acting, pure drama, believable and intens.
That's as hardcore REAL as it gets.

He excells in realness (except for True Lies, which is his only over the top movie, but that was a comedy/action)

So yeah he is one of my all time favourite directors.

Ow he also created the Endoskeleton, the Alien Queen, the mandibles on Predator, the first elaborate CGI animation in a live action movie for the Abyss
(ok, young Sherlock Homes had the glass knight, but that wasn't as tricky as the water effect)

Ok I could go on about his movies, like the way they hold up so good against the test of time, but now I'm just rambling.

So my point was; good points TURDONTHERUN!

    Cameron fucking rules!
    Cant wait to see AVATAR!

Let me put it this way: I don't like Cameron. I find his movies to be eye candy with pretenses to something more. That's my opinion, we'll have to disagree. And yes, I admit that whether he's a jerk personally has nothing to do with whether his movies are any good. But when he talks about pre and post-Avatar, he sounds like fricking John Gaeta saying how Matrix Reloaded was going to rewrite all the rules of film FX. Hell, even Tarantino admits that he's nothing without earlier movies. Just a little humility, that's all I want.

This movie has been hyped as the best thing since space bread and all we've seen are a couple of lame blue bipeds. It's not even that they are lame becuase they are blue but the design of them is just so bland. Even the world of warcraft race the Draenei are better looking than that.

Alas as much as i like my science fiction films i don't think this will be as special as the fanboys think it is.

I meant he'll never top Alien/Terminator/True Lies from a Storytelling perspective. Those films are all unique films that spawned countless rip offs and influenced Sci-Fi/Action/Action-Comedy films beyond what we all realize. Titanic, while successful, (I made no claims otherwise) was an okay piece of drama filled with classic cliches. I want filmmakers, especially the established ones, to push the technical boundaries of film-making (which JC is clearly doing with Avatar) but not at the cost of sacrificing good storytelling. JC has so far been very good at doing this, as evidenced by T2. But nothing from Avatar has seemed like the revolutionary kind of visual I was told to expect. I simply feel this kind of hype is ridiculous and bound to work against the film. Last but not least, while I'm not worried about JC, I just think it'd be a shame to see him go the way of Spielberg (who constantly lends his name to technically impressive shitshows).

"more people in the world DON'T eat McDonalds than DO"... Yeah, and more people in the world didn't see Titanic than did. And while I admit it was beautifully shot, Titanic was definitely poorly WRITTEN. The reason it was such a big hit with teenage girls was because it was the Twilight of its era - poor little rich girl is "liberated" by bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks. Hell, people go on about its 11 Oscars, but what they forget is that it was the first Best Picture winner since Sound Of Music to not even be NOMINATED for Best Screenplay.

Dark Knight succeeded because it got people outside the fanboy realm to see it, same way Titanic appealed to the Twilight crowd. Avatar can look like a photograph of heaven and it doesn't matter if the story sucks. (Which I'm not saying it does; I'm just taking a wait and see attitude).

What Cameron says about this movie...

    by wookie1972

reminds me of the comments Arthur C. Clarke made about 2001, for exmple that the reason it didn't win the Oscar for makeup was because they thought they used real apes (in point of fact, there was no Oscar for makeup at the time, just a special one for Planet Of the APes, which did deserve it, IMHO). I'm not saying that 2001 weren't brilliant, but HAVE SOME GODDAMN HUMILITY.

dude, think about how almost everything in Hollywood is compromised by the bullshit that goes on there. Cameron never compromises because he never backs down, which probably means that he has to act like an asshole some of the time. And when has talent and ego not gone hand in hand dude? I dont care because he is nt my buddy, im not going drinking with him etc...Thus unless he has done something really morally heinous like fucking his adopted child (Woody Allen) or fucking an underage girl (Polanski) then the only thing I care about is what hes able to get on screen. And that is why he has the clout and respect within the film industry that he does, because he does nt compromise (he gave up his salary on Titanic so that he would nt have to bow to studio demands, he has told studio execs to fuck off etc..) and the simple reality is that in an industry of egos like the film industry that means you have to be something of an asshole...

Well, he's got a nasty habit of marrying and then dumping his female co-workers, but I admit that's not as bad as Woody or Polanski. The main thing for me is that he relies too much on the spectacle and technical side and yet claims to be a "storyteller." I find a lot of his dialogue rather stilted (even Aliens, which I admit is a great action movie). As for egos? Eh, maybe you're right, but I think that gets played up a little too much. For every John Ford or Von Stroheim (the stereotypical tyrant in a beret and jodpurs) there's someone like Cronenburg, who despite the nastiness of his material is apparently a pussycat.

But Cameron does not do that, wether you like his films or not, the guy has created memorable characters, and his scripts (have you ever read any?) are really damn good. Try reading his script for Spiderman, Strange Days, or even the old Avatar scriptment, and you will see that he does nt forget that the characters are the most important thing.

1997 was a bad year for me at the Oscars. The movie I absolutely loved and represented the future for me, Boogie Nights, was shut out in favour of the movie with the most bells and whistles. Not that I activelly disliked Titanic, but I think the history of film is best when it's balanced between the epic and the personal.

and I found the dialogue hollow (yeah, sue me). As for Kubrick, I'll be honest - I know he's technically brilliant but much of his work leaves me cold. Like I said, you have to have a balance. What bugs me is that the brilliance of the Kubricks and Camerons of this world get the most noise, whereas the equal brilliance of someone like, I dunno, Todd Haynes or Albert Brooks (how's that for random examples?) gets ignored.

for me, think about how biased Hollywood is to genre filmaking, there are countless genre film and performances in genre films that could and should have won Oscars, but never have. When Cameron won those Oscars, as far as im concerned that was him winning for his sci-fi filmography. just like when Jackson won for ROTK even though imho FOTR was the film he should have won it for imho. And why should nt directors that have shaped cinema ever win (and no matter what Cameron is and will be a very influential filmaker). First of all, a lot. There's the beautiful tracking shot that begins Boogie Nights. The "Sister Christian" scene. The all-out weirdness of the "Wise Up" scene in Magnolia. Daniel Day Lewis in There WIll Be Blood. My point is that these "contribute" to the history of film as much as photorealistic rendering of a sinking ship.

It's not longer in the top 250 of IMDB (and the top ten does include such geek faves as Pulp FIction and Good the Bad and the Ugly, but the continual high rating of the Godfathers and Shawshank can't be just because of film geeks). In general, epics don't age well once the novelty of the spectacle has gone. And I know this wasn't from Boogie Nights, but "I Drink Your Milkshake" was a pretty popular meme a few years back. In any case, don't you want it both ways? You relegate Boogie Nights to a "film geek" fave, and yet you talk about how nobody respects genre films. So hopefully we'll get to test that theory. Also, personally, even with all it's flaws, I still like Titanic. Even now, all these years later after have seen a ton of doc footage on the making of the film I still forgot that they're not actually on a dang ship during the first half of the movie. I certainly think the second half is more exciting, but to me the ship starts to look more and more set like after the iceberg hit.

    by pawprint

I have seen nothing in the UK Press(other than some small notes in computer mags and Film Mags). Your 'average' UK filmgoer is not aware of this film.
To describe this photo as 'supercool' is either cheaping the use of 'supercool', or MASSIVELY over-egging the pudding. It's a still photo - nothing more. Unless of course the whole thing is CG, in which case it's quite good, but not 'game changing'.
I fail to see how this (or any) film is going to be 'game changing' in terms of SFX for years to come. The problem with CG is it can only aspire to become absolutely realistic, and once it reaches that stage it will become nothing special - because, after all, we all know we're watching a film. CG should be used to enhance physical effects to make them more impressive - it shouldn't be the be all and end all.

Guys seem to get downright angry when you admit liking Titanic, as if you whipped out your dick and started slapping them in the face with it. I don't care that it has a Picasso in it or that it's a romance. I still think it's a good movie. Not the best, but pretty good. The angsty romance works fine imo. That's what romance feels like for people Jack and Rose's age (and I think I was that exact age when I saw it). It's not like it was Attack of the Clones, with two lifeless cardboard cutouts spouting Goerge Lucas's dialogue at each other. Oh, and Billy Zane was an awesome bad guy. That is all.

    by theplant

It as the fantastic ressurection scene, but otherwise, it's drab, apart from the SFX submarine shots that is. The problem is simple ; Maria Elisabeth Mastrantonio is miscast, she is clearly thinking during all the movie that she is above Cameron and his material. Hint : Cameron did not fuck her.

    The Hype Is Ending ...

    by thusspakespymunk

We all know the hype is coming to an end. Notice that after the ComicCon footage aired, there was a resounding "Well ... huh." That was the reaction from just about everyone. The geeks, the most easily-excited hype generators in the world, referred to it as "kinda ok." This is an epic disaster of a movie, poised to bankrupt a studio and ruin the career of anyone involved. Notice too that the studio is taking an unprecedented position and planning to GIVE THE MOVIE AWAY FOR FREE - well, part of it - and not even that has generated any interest in the major media. This is poised to fail bigger than any movie has ever failed in the history of cinema. ABOUT TO FAIL

All depends on the rating. PG-13, it will make a killing, probably passing budget domestically. R, it wil absolutely fucking fail if it has any whif of bad press. People who buy PG-13 tickets are alot more "general audience" this includeds parents just dropping their kids off with money for it cause it's "a space movie". It's got toys anyway. R, on the other hand, means a lot more of a discriminate audience, adults who try to know what the fuck they are spending their money on first. If it's not "supposed to be really good" trust me, an R-rated Avatar will be a ground-shaking historical mega-flop.

The dialogue was crap. The romance wasn't for "people Jack and Rose's age," it was pitched at 13 year olds. It was fine to look at, but the script was lame. I understand a lot of the 'greatest develpoment' stuff was Cameron touting his new technology advances behind the screens, but the problem is is that putting those kind of statements out there kind of hamstrings you if you're not delivering something that's pretty special onscreen, people who are disappointed will hang you for it. I really love Cameron's work, but it has to be said nothing - not one still, poster or tidbit about story - has captured my interest more than any marketing he did for previous movies, and I think that's a good indicator that this film will bomb. Not simply due to my opinion, but the fact that I'm overwhelmingly not alone judging by the internet 'buzz' which apart from a few fanatics has been very 'meh' at best.....and with this little advertising so far, so close to release, apart from us internet dwellers who the fuck else knows about the film? Who cares? I simply can't see enough Joe Public going to see this along with the fans to make it a financial success. Whether or not beyond the financial considerations it's actually a good film or not, I can't say now obviously not having seen it - but the stuff we've been fed so far is giving me a bad taste. I'm not excited about it's release. I'm not interested by the plot. I don't care about the casting beyond the always great Weaver, and I couldn't care less he invented new tech to film it....all I want is a great new film from Jim Cameron, and so far I'm not feeling it. And I do stand by my comment on the Avatar picture. Impressive CGI or no, it looks daft. Worthington looks out of place. After seeing him so far being unimpressive in the terrible T4, I'm hoping he'll rise to 'competent' with this....as a film I'm far more anxious about, Clash of the Titans, kind of rises or falls with him unfortunately.

I've not watched it all the way through, but i was highly disapointed by it because mighty joe young looks so much better in the FX department.

    Also i don't think i can stand a 3 hour monkey movie.

As for the CGI you think thats good CGI in the still.

Go watch jurassic park again check out the T rex on the move and that was how many years ago ?

They have made something so bland look realistic ... big woop

Something as complicated as a T rex made from 70,000 poly's is made to look realistic is just short of amazing.

Yet claims are being made like 'greatest new development in movies' and i am thinking .... where ?

Belive the hype you'll be let down i am sure of it.

I have the scriptment if anyone wants it, and I liked what I read, which is why I'm looking forward to it no matter what pic gets released. All the edgar rice burroughs comparisons sound the most apt. This is not going to be a life changing movie for us, it may be for young boys, which I think is where the Star Wars comparisons come from, for people over 25 I think it will just be a good to great movie for most people, it's an action/adventure movie with lots of action/adventure, I just hope it's better than recent offerings from that genre like Crystal Skull, T4, T2, Die Hard 4. And Cameron, or any director for that fact show humility? Pha!

    by hint_of_smegma

It will bomb, I hate to say it about a Cameron film but simply too few 'regular Joe' type filmgoers are aware of it. Fans alone cannot make a film with a 200-plus million budget successful - Titanic only pulled in the money it did because it appealed to people across the board, and was marketed to hell and back for a long time before opening. Internet buzzm like with Titanic, may change how a movie is viewed, good or bad, but unless that appeal is there and that awareness goes with it, there's not going to be a huge box-office take. Whether the film is good or bad, I truly think Cameron and whoever is dealing with the marketing of this movie have fucked up royally and really hurt it's chances - they're drip-feeding information at a snails pace, most of the reaction so far has been "huh" at best and too few people are even aware of that. Financially it's doomed, I'm pretty sure of that. I just hope it's actually a great film I can enjoy that gains more notoriety over time, but again, what's been released so far isn't making me really believe even that will be the case. If I'm wrong after it's released, I'll readily admit I was off-kilter with this, but anyone hoping it will be great I fear will be disappointed - and anyone thinking financially it will succeed needs to look at the subjective facts of how many people need to see it versus how many people currently know about it, let alone give a damn. As I've said, I love Cameron, but I think this 10 year hiatus has given him a few loopy ideas aboput the kinds of films that can be successful.

    SUCK IT UP

    by jsscript2007

Cameron is a pimp and each film is one of his whores. And every one of them provides us all with something to be entertained by. And rather than sitting back to see what he's spent years creating at a cost of hundreds of millions, a bunch of kids with their dicks in their hands are judging the book by its cover. I have seen every Cameron flick opening day and not once has he failed to make me feel like I had just witnessed why movies are so incredible. Each movie is like a gift and if you want to open the package early and yell to everyone it sucks, what can I say, you're a fool. Passing judgement prematurely is a lame personality trait and only generates an opinion not to be held in regard. Cameron is the only guy out there who consistantly puts his nuts on the line, money be damned, to make the kind of movie that you will never forget. If I was him and read these talkbacks, I'd tell you all to go fuck yourself and not reveal shit until two weeks from opening day. Suck it up and wait. It'll be worth it.

...not revealing anything until two weeks from opening day would be shooting himself in the foot, which isn't far off what he's doing right now. Get this through your head - a lot of people wondering if this will deliver aren't haters, we're fans of Cameron. In the past, every single film since Terminator has wowed people prior to release with the material that has been released. The material released for this film so far has been, at best, poor - and that's being charitable so it's hardly a 'lame personality trait' to speculate on just how good it will actually be. This is 'Aint It Cool News' after all, speculation about movies is the whole point here. This just doesn't look very good, end of story. Cameron restricting marketing so close to release when so few regular people are even aware of the movie makes no sense financially, because Cameron fans alone won't make it a success. He needs the general public, as with Titanic, and here he simply does not have them. If you think otherwise right now, you're wrong, pure and simple. I hope it's a success, more than that I hope it's a great movie but it really isn't looking like either are going to be the case right now.

    by hint_of_smegma

..would go a long way to aleviating fears and creating more good word of mouth. My problems with seeing this film as a success aren't due to not wanting to like it, far from it - the biggest reason I think it will tank is due to not enough people knowing about it due to it's lack of marketed material available right now, and this wasn't the case with previous Cameron movies. What there is does not look that great. For this film to be a success with it's much larger than 200 mil budget, an awful lot of people need to go and see it, and right now not enough people know about it - and of those who do, not too many seem very wowed by what they've seen. I do hope it's a success, can't stress that enough. Just can't see it right now unless JC himself co-opts every TV signal in the world and whacks the trailer in front of enough people's eyeballs.

the Haldeman novel or the non-fiction one about Iraq? Either project would fit Scott, although I doubt they'd need much cgi for the Iraq one. p.s. Someone should make Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch. Now, that, done right, would mess people up.

was that John Gaeta went on about how many years ahead the FX would be of anyone else, and they didn't even win the fricking OScar. He acted like ILM never existed, and it was incrediboly arrogant. Cameron's not quite as bad, but he can get there.

    Too much hype

    by jsscript2007

too soon is a bad thing. The studio marketing campaign is not going to show their cards to early, especially to a bunch of people with impossible expectations. So far the reactions I've heard have been favorable to amazing. Yet release a few stills with no context and panic and doubt sets in. Have a little patience. When the marketing dollars can be spent where they'll be most effective, they'll start delivering the goods. Then all the haters will climb on the bandwagon chanting they always knew it was gonna be a big hit! Just remember the average water cooler joe, out of sheer ignorance, will call Avatar a failure if it does less box office than Titanic. And all those girls that went to Titanic think space movies are stupid.

I hope your right dude. I remember I got stupidly caught up in the Cloverfield marketing because I love a good monster movie, no one in my work knew a thing about it and thought I was a dick checking sites in work each day for updates, a week or 2 before it was released most were intrigued by the tv spots but ALL ended up going to see it. I know Cloverfield is totally different than Avatar, in budget and even marketing, but sometimes the sneak approach works to, it recouped cloverfields small budget which was the whole point of the viral, I just can't see this being a flop when things like Transformers 2 is breaking the bank. Plus the "from the maker of The Titanic" is bound to raise those ears

a little flawed in some story ways... but technically if you understand the underwater logisitics... like the submersibles, diving , the rig all astounding... i grew up at AUTEC surrounded by classified navy sub, weapon systems, diving etc. and i know from experience cameron did something more technically exquisite than anything he did on titanic... i loved it but had a few cheesy issues... it kept of stay edgier but then again compare it to some of the sheer soppy shit in that genre and it stands out.

    by corplhicks

To all you idiots who condemn this movie based on a single still image, go home and rub your Episode I Anakin doll on your crotches because that is the closest you will ever get to sex.
"Waaa it looks like Terminator 3, waaaaa it looks like Lord of the Rings meets T3, waaaaa waaa" SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU BABIES.

Fact is, no one knows if this will be good or not-- but since it's Cameron and a good potential story, you can bet he will pour his heart into the movie. Few directors do that, and he does.
Watch for (my prediction): 1) strobe lights, 2) klaxons, 3) rotating orange alert lights, 4) at least one very strong female character, 5) mocking or showing that the government or mainstream military is either inept or stupid, 6) destruction of official military or police vehicles.
And since it is Cameron, and he truly cares about everything that does into his films, you can be that this will be a must-see in theaters at least once; that is my prediction.

**** spoiler stuff follows this ****
And by the way, District 9 was very good, but not the best picture of the year, decade, etc.. A similar tale was told before, such as with Blood Diamond, where the star undergoes a moral transformation and ultimately sacrifices his life to protect the "minority". And there are plot holes-- like how did an alien and a gimpy sick human get all the way in front of MNU headquarters without being noticed???!!! And this is right in JBerg. Come on !!!! Did they beam in? Totally ridiculous. They drove out, right, but the scene just picks up with them blowing a hold in the entrance. And the module that is detachable from the immense ship, that literally can fall out if 0.9 g pulls it is the bridge of this massive ship? And the only way to fly the thing is with that? With all their technology they could not remotely link with their ship's computer? And in 6 seconds, the SA government or any other government would drop a JDAM on that Nigerian Warlord killing him, his followers, and everyone within 100 meters and that would have been that. Oh and where did all these alien weapons come from? If they were all sick and dying and taken off the ship to save their lives and are basically naked until they started wearing pink bras, didn't anyone on those SA helicopters notice those BFGs the aliens were carrying down to Earth. Not to mention a MechWarrier Beast !!!! And that is just off the top of my head.

I know, there's money in healing spinal cord injuries, too, but I'm just speculating.

Of course, it could just be that members of the military are still given the same level of health care they have today, and therefore, don't get necessary spinal surgeries to walk again.

    Kajisan (Re: To all Avatar_haters)

    by lv_426

My first reaction and response to this image was that it was underwhelming. I feel that I need to clarify something though. I'm definitely not hating on the movie, especially since I haven't seen it yet.I can't speak for others here with negative opinions on this still image, but I would wager that many, myself included, don't actually want this film to fail or think that it will fail because we don't like this one image. Many of us that saw this image and were unimpressed probably want this film to be amazing. I know I do. Look at my freaking talkback name. Just because we want it to amazing though, doesn't guarantee that it will be, unless we delude ourselves into thinking so for the sake of not wanting to face it being a failure (that is if it isn't good, it could very well be great -- for example: The Phantom Menace denials). You're right though, one frame grab can't be the determining factor of whether a movie is good or whether it sucks. But this slow trickle of Avatar information is not doing the film any good in my opinion. It only to adds to the already bloated hype that has built up over the past 3 years. And if I were in charge of marketing Avatar, I'd certainly release a much more interesting still from the film than this one. Also, it has been stated that this is a doctored image that isn't even in the film. The avatar behind Worthington is not his avatar in the film. I can say with a sigh of relief that upon hearing this I was not as underwhelmed as I was initially. I feel that we were lead down the wrong path by a clueless marketing dept. Where is Don Draper when you need him?As to why they would originally release the first teaser poster with Worthington's more lion-like and generally powerful looking avater half face image, then show us an image of him in front of someone else's less powerful and heroic looking avatar, which doesn't look like Worthington's character at all, boggles my mind. I think because this frame grab is so out of context, and with the two half face avatar one sheets we've seen so far, the marketing is starting to set up conflicting expectations. Hopefully, and I don't doubt, that we'll finally get a proper idea of what this film can offer once we see a proper trailer.I will say though, that the two teaser posters, the first one of Worthington’s avatar, and the second feminine looking one are more along what I expected the aliens of Pandora to look like. Also, the AMP mech suits are kick ass looking. I can’t wait to see those things in action. I’ll definitely be there on opening day with my usual big ass soda and Junior Mints in hand.

My point about mentioning the lack of the screenplay nomination was that people were pointing to all the fricking Oscars Titanic won as 'proof' of its wonderfulness. And it wasn't just the dialogue, the entire characterization was lame. BIlly Zane needed a top hat and moustache to twirl and he would be the stereotypical melodramatic villain. Rose goes on about Freud with apparently no indication that she might know that, gee, Freud wasn't exactly a feminist. The Picassp. Jack's friend with his look-at-me-Im-a-Mario accent. All of these things took away from the movie. The guy needs at least a writing partner, oh and some fricking humility.

I don't "casually dismiss" anything about Cameron. SUre, he's a pioneer in CGI. However, there's more to movies than CGI, and I find many of the other aspects of Cameron's contribution to film at best average.

Sorry, but the whole story behind AVATAR just sounds lame. Too much fantasy, not enough sci-fi. I have a feeling this thing is going to bomb royally. Plus, the Christmas season is a so-so time for movie earnings anyway. Jim Carey will stomp it at the box office . How sad will that be? Finally, 3-D pretty much sucks for most movies, especially the kind that looks like a window looking outward rather than the 3-D jumping off the screen. So, again, yawn.

I really have no idea how any so-called geek/genre fan can be uninterested/unexcited by the last collaboration between Cameron and Stan Winston (fitting that this should be his swansong imho). So far most of the designs we have seen have been pretty damn cool imho (would love to know what would be better) and have been done by some of the best there is. Geez, Cameron gave us the T800 endoskeleton, the wueen alien, T1000, the predator etc..Stans work does nt need to be repeated, and thats not even mentioningh guys like Wayne Barlow, Jordu Schell etc...Also does anyone realise that this movie has also been worked on by Weta, Digital Domain, Stan Winston Studios, and ILM? I can tell you that the story is cool, but more importantly there is quite good thematic content and lots of cool trippy sci-fi ideas in it, the kind of stuff that has only been seen in Anime, and never done live action. Also, im not sure how that picture is sad, as others have pointed out what everyone is overlooking is how photreal that looks (and its cgi). If thats what the movie fx look like then it would appear that they may have just pulled this off....

the script being bad, first off dont worry, The script was written by both Cameron and Laeta Kalogordis (she wrote Shutter Island for Scorsese, and the Battle Angel Alita script for Cameron). And secondly I doubt you have ever actually read one of Cameron's scripts, because you sure as hell dont know what you are talking about. His scripts are considered to be good because their structure is perfect (go read a random sample of scripts and then compare the structure...). And he is able to maintain a consistent internal logic, while easily explaining sometimes complex ideas/concepts.

Um, actually, that's exactly what an appeal to
    authority is.

" He does, actually, agree with you about Zane's character but dismisses it as a minor problem" The main antagonist being a caricature is a minor problem? Sure thing.

"And by the way, if you couldn't care less what an actual successful screenwriter and novelist has to say on story why on earth should anyone give a good goddamn what you have to say on the subject? Just asking."

I suggest a new strategy... let the Wookiee win.

    by llghtst0rmer

Look, I've dealt with a lot of douchebags on AICN talkbacks trying to piss all over everything James Cameron has ever done or ever will do, just to get a rise out of guys like me, but I think I get Wookie's sentiments. He looks for other things in movies than we do.

I can't fault him for disliking JC's dialogue or characterization any more than someone can fault me for having zero interest at all in anything Paul Anderson ever makes... and I mean the "good" Paul Anderson. PT Anderson. I mean, you can tell me Boogie Nights was classic cinema of the 90's, but I still say it was Pulp Fiction set in the porn industry. I thought it was lame. And I haven't seen anything by the guy ever since. But I saw Titanic 7 times in the theatres. Cameron serves my preferred flavor of cinema. Wookie has different tastes. At least he's not pulling this stupid "All his movies suck and you're just gay for Wobodaddy" bullshit.

No sense in not having a good discussion with him, but I can tell he's too set in his tastes to see it the way we do, and too levelheaded not to appreciate his opinion.

    Just my 2 cents.

    by llghtst0rmer

I think "on paper" is where Phantom Menace failed worst. The movie could have been great if it had been well-written. Some better plotting, a less convoluted main thrust of the story ("No, I will not sign your treaty that will authorize your trade route blockade!" Are you fucking kidding me?) some dialogue that doesn't sound like nails on a chalkboard in any language on earth, and some moderately developed characters would have at least been a good starting point for Lucas to go out and direct it horribly. Then at least we could have said it was a good movie made badly, you know?

Nobody is going to take his cock out of your mouth. You know that blue tinted dildo you have with his autograph? You can suck it all night long! Have at it! Enjoy thine borderline psychotic idolatry! Meanwhile, I'll be looking forward to seeing what Avatar has to offer beyond the hype and hope it lives up to it. The premise is certainly intriguing. Lets see him back up his bluster. Thrill me, Cameron. Make me believe the guy who made Aliens wasn't a fluke. And before you bother saying it, yes, I know, you think T2 is the greatest film of all times and anyone who doesn't think so is a big dumb doody head. Also, PG-13 is a moviekiller, unless its Cameron, then its okay. Got it.

No, I've never been in the service, but so what? It was corny. The "space truckers" scenes in the first Alien movie were much more believable. It's verisimilitude, which is not the same as realism. Ebert, for better or worse, didn't like Erin Brockovitch because he didn't believe the character. When people pointed out that she was a real person who actually did those things, Ebert (rightly) pointed out that that was beside the point. The movie didn't work for me, and the dialogue (as did most of the dialogue in Titanic) took me out of the movie.

u havent put the whole speech:
Another glorious day in the Corps! A day in the Marine Corps is like a day on the FARM. Every meal's a banquet! Every paycheck a fortune! Every formation a parade! I LOVE the Corps!
that analogy with the farm, doesnt give the usual larger than life, ultra tough cliche quotes,u find in other action movies.
imho it express a more sensible, modest, real life kind of toughness.just as the farmers who do a very hard work, who are survivors whose ever day is just another day to "fight" for their living in the farms, whose hot meal and a good sleep is their deserving and very important reward of their days hard work,
in the same fashion, the soldiers should treasure very much the same rewards of their military life:
their training, their responsibilities, their duties, their teamwork, professionalism etc,all that consists a days hard work, with a meal,a paycheck etc being rewards of that hard work, and they should be very proud of it.THATS the meaning of Apones speech.

But let me put it this way: I saw Aliens when I was 14 and was amazed... until I saw Alien for the first time (on video). I can't believe how great a movie I just saw - we all get blase these days after seeing so much that doesn't live up to the hype, but hell, D9 really did. It's trailers and marketing were great, and the film was superb. 30 million budget? Cameron must be sticking pins in a Blomkamp doll right about now. Avatar's marketing so far has been, realistically, fucking shit.....and now this image is released to tempt us? It's a shitty picture, I fear ominously forcasting what's to come - a bloated mess. And he's planning 'Battle Angel' next? Fuck, the guy's lost his mind somewhere in that 12 year hiatus. Mulleted Thundercats? Fuck me. This is the guy who gave us Terminator, Abyss and Aliens. I was going to reply to all the same old points you keep making (wrongly) but life is too short. But just so you know Cameron isn't my favourite filmmaker, in fact he's prob not even in my top 10. Just imagine how pissed off i'd be if you dissed one of them.
