Massawyrm gives up the goods on THE GOODS: LIVE HARD SELL HARD!!
Hola all. Massawyrm here.
This one is going to be short and sweet because, frankly, there’s not a whole hell of a lot to say. This is one of those rare, baffling films that simply defies classification. It is its own thing in such a way that you will spend a goodly portion of it just trying to figure out what the fuck it is you’re watching. Because it is not going to help you. THE GOODS: LIVE HARD SELL HARD is theater of the absurd, and might almost find itself in with something like THE ZOO STORY…if it were actually trying to say something. But it isn’t. No. THE GOODS: LIVE HARD SELL HARD has but one intention: make you laugh. A lot. And it succeeds.
THE GOODS is the story of a failing car lot (owned by James Brolin) forced to call in a slasher – a fly by night mercenary car salesman who specializes in weekend sales bonanzas. The team he calls is made up of Jeremy Piven, Ving Rhames, David Koechner and Kathryn Hahn – a group of ace salesmen who are all, for the sake of argument, out of their fucking minds. But that’s okay. Because so is every other cast member in this movie. In fact, the only people not out of their minds are the customers.
There are a few brief moments in which the film attempts to give us some forward momentum with the plot, but it doesn’t matter. The film doesn’t give a shit about its story – or its characters. It is one, long, 90 minute skit about car salesmen. By the end you won’t care who ends up with whom, whether they succeeded or if anything matters at all. And normally that’s a bad thing. I mean a movie lacking a plot or character development? That’s a bad movie.
Except that here it works.
The movie isn’t about selling cars or falling in love or finding your place in the world, despite the occasional moment or two they spend on those themes. No, it’s about watching a bunch of crazy mother fuckers absurdly pinball off of one another, throwing joke after joke at the wall to see what sticks. Some of them don’t. Sometimes the jokes are just too off the wall for even this cast to save it. But when it works, it really, really works. By the time Alan Thicke shows up as a rival car salesman, you won’t be asking “what the fuck,” anymore; you’ll just be going with it. That is if you haven’t given up entirely.
This thing has cult written all over it. Some people are going to hate the living shit out of it. Not able to make heads or tails of it, they’re just going to be offended or find it too crass and bizarre for even their taste. But the people that like it will have a really good time, and much like myself, find it hard to explain why. There are some brilliant moments in this. From Ving Rhames stripper comments to Kathryn Hahn trying to seduce a 10 year old boy with a pituitary problem (making him a full grown adult) on down to every single moment that Will Ferrell is on screen. Holy crap is he funny in this. Long time readers know that I am no Ferrell fan, but god damn he had me howling. Add in a bunch of great, strange bit parts by the likes of Brolin, Ed Helms, Rob Riggle, Ken Jeong, Noureen DeWulf, Craig Robinson and a slew of other character actors and you have the makings for a film the mainstream will ignore, but others will pass around on DVD.
Imagine WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER set on a car lot, trying to tell a semi-coherent story, but not being reliant upon skit based humor…and you get a basic approximation of what this feels like. Over thinking this film will only confuse you. It is stupid, it is silly and it is fucking funny as a rubber crutch. That’s all there really is to it. I’m not going to tell anyone to break their neck trying to go out and see it; but if this sounds like your cup of tea, it is definitely worth a look.
Until next time friends, smoke ‘em if ya got ‘em.

Looks hilarious
-
yikes. sounds grim.
-
Fuck's sake, man...I want HIS agent.
-
A movie filled with great character actors doing there thing in a movie about fuckin' dodgeball. That movie came out of left field (a movie about dodgeball...seriously?), and made me laugh..a lot.
-
And in a related comment, there should be a DVD of Used Cars with commentary by Kurt Russell and John Carpenter (who had nothing to do with the movie), just because those two produce the most entertaining DVD commentaries.
-
Used Cars? I am afraid that is the impression I get looking at the trailer. I hope I am right and wrong as Used Cars is a masterpiece.
-
Is it just me, or does he stop the comedy in its tracks every time he shows up in KNOCKED UP, ROLE MODELS, and even HANGOVER? That said, Massawyrm had me at WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER with car salesmen.
-
showed some of the trailers to friends and I'm laughing my ass off... and they're looking at me like "Uhh... is this like that Terry Gilliam shit you were showing us that you love so much?"
I'll bring my "Lover of the Absurd" fan club card to the opening, kick back, and drink in the Kool Aid. -
PLEAS see the deleted scene from Step Brothers where he improvises a goddamn hilarious diner scene....best part? "Highest of fives" and..."shut the fuck up"...and..."away flo....away"
-
ok-KEN JEONG...AND The deleted scene is from Role Models....sorry folks!
-
And I'm all about that. I'll do just about anything to escape seeing the same movie made over and over again. Oh. And Go see The Hurt Locker.
-
I smell remake again. It is basically an inferior remake to USED CARS! If you want to watch a really funny movie go out and either rent it or buy.
-
this is one of those reviews where he doesn't want to give it a bad review for whatever reason, so he makes out he likes it but tempers it with his real feelings disguised as the viewpoint he knows most people are gonna have with this... ie. its just one long stupid skit. still this review has nothing on harry's lady in the water review. go read that again, its hilarious how much he despised that movie but he wasn't allowed to write a bad review for it, it must have killed him!
-
The John Landis documentary this movie is based on.
-
Is he a Mad TV actor???? I'm betting he is, I'm gonna have my guys over at IMDB run a search.
-
The lab and he was in 4 episodes of Mad TV, thats one more then enough to call him a Mad TV player. Is that show still on? Serisouly who actually watches that show? I know of no body who's seen an entire episode.
-
What the fuck did you do with Dave Chapelle?
-
Sure the Piv has gotten big with Entourage, but how long did it take him to become a semi known person? Ken Jeong isn't funny hasn't even been anything more then a cameo in anything and he already gets late night appearences to promote a movie. And is in better movies then Piv?
-
Of Used Cars with Kurt Russell, but that movie made fun of used car salesmen and had a plot, so I guess not.
-
... I saw this movie a week ago. I wanted to love it (or at least "like" it) ... it was bad... it even looked cheaply made. Maybe all the money went to Pivens many hair pieces?

When they use Big Brother to push it , it's an assfuck

Bottom of the shit barrel

This movie was awful - you never cared about anything (or anyone) - and the humor was certainly a lot more MISS than HIT... my god. I was in a screening and couldn't leave so I had to endure a whole lot of "not funny"
-
and he's the spittin image of Brock Sampson, or at least his dad.
-
i don't even think it's playing at my ocal theatre though, why are these funny cult type movies never wide released...it just promotes ilegal downloading, cause if i can't see it in a theatre thats what i'm going to have to do
-
And I shut that one off pretty fast.
-
I thought Harry might have banned people talking about it
-
nailed a hooker to death in Very Bad Things, been on The Larry Sanders Show as a regular, and a stomach full of John Cusack's semen.
-
That flick put me to sleep.
-
Was kinda funny as well as the clip with Ferrells only? scene in it.
-
...was Edward Albee, so this is a surprise.
And Wet Hot American Summer is hilarious. Fuck y'all haters. -

was interested until Massa mentioned Wet Hot American Summer
by osiris3657
That is one of the worst movies I've ever seen, the "comedy" in that film was strangely unfunny. Anyone who thinks Wet Hot American Summer is funny loses all credibility in terms of their sense of humor.
-
even see this movie? I could have wrote that and I'm fucking retarded in all 52 continental states
-
For the record, I REALLY dislike Wet Hot American Summer - but it is the closest approximation to storytelling style that came to mind. The humor is very different - still wildly absurd, but different.
-
thats what it reminds me of.
-
couldn't agree more with this sentiment: "this is one of those reviews where he doesn't want to give it a bad review for whatever reason, so he makes out he likes it but tempers it with his real feelings disguised as the viewpoint he knows most people are gonna have with this". massa, you're usually the best reviewer here.

by banditdarville
His character Ashley Shaffer on Eastbound and Down is funny as hell. "It's got-damn amazin'! Woo!" Season 2 can't get here fast enough.
-
I think we've had enough of these childish comedies. Why do they have to stick us with one more?
-
You've never had mixed feelings about a film? Found things to openly dislike, but couldn't help liking things about it anyway?

That's all I can think of when I see him. Just once I would like for him to yell, "WHOOO"

Is this like Used cars?

Steered me right when it came to The Collector, so I'll be checking this out as well.

best dumb comedy ever

The scene where he tells Kenny Powers that to close the deal his saleswomen will "take you in the back and suck your dick" makes him my kind of car dealer.

Jeff: Hey, Alex. Can we go back to your grandma's house? I gotta pee.
Alex: Why don't you just go to the alley and pee?
Jeff: I gotta pee out of my ass. -

Didnt like the trailer where they beat up the lil asian
by gibsonusa returns
So what are they selling? Used American cars? Beat up the asian salesguy? Like 75% of the people I know drive Toyota Camrys or related.
-
I think I might actually see this. Even at a new vehicle dealership, the potential for comedy is far too great.
-
There's no justice.
-
Massa wins again. Funny movie, no story. Craig Robinson was fucking awesome. I really wish they would let that man star in a movie. Every scene with Will Ferrel was gold.
-
That far more people will want to see The Goods than Ponyo.
-
in The Office. Was the only positive thing in Miss March, although thats not saying much. I get the feeling for this, like Museum 2, that the cast is filled with comedy gold, but the result is bronze.
-
poor little fella. Lost all his hair and laid another egg at the B.O.
