Prepare Your Optical Receptors For Rigorous Copulation!! AVATAR Day Tickets Distribution Details, Trailer News, And More!!

Published at:  Aug 13, 2009 10:32:14 AM CDT

Merrick here...

A few weeks ago we learned of James Cameron's plans to hold free screenings of AVATAR footage in IMAX theaters across the country. Even though this event is free, tickets are still be needed to get into these screenings - Fox & Co. have now released further details regarding where and when to nab tickets to the 16 minute preview.

Per THIS piece in the L.A. Times:

On Monday, 20th Century Fox will launch an unusual offer on the website for its Cameron-directed film "Avatar": free tickets for an early look at 16 minutes of footage from the futuristic thriller that will be shown in more than 100 Imax 3-D theaters around the world.

With two screenings on Friday, Aug. 21 (at 6 and 6:30 p.m.), the "Avatar" preview will include an introduction from Cameron and some new footage not shown during July's Comic-Con International convention in San Diego.
[EDIT]
In what’s sure to be a mad grab among sci-fi fans, tickets will be given away a first-come, first-served basis on the “Avatar” website (www.avatarmovie.com) at noon PST Monday.

It should be noted that not all towns/cities/locations with IMAX screens will be hosting this screening. In Austin, for example, the local 3D IMAX will not be hosting this AVATAR preview because it did not book the film for the Christmas season (opting instead to present Robert Zemeckis' A CHRISTMAS CAROL in the IMAX 3D format over the Holidays).

To those luck enough to get in: we'd love some reports about your experiences, and detailed perceptions about what you see.

AVATAR's trailer will also emerge on August 21:

On the same date, theaters worldwide will begin showing more conventional 2D and 3D "Avatar" trailers.
[EDIT]
...will continue to play in coming weeks before feature presentations of Fox Searchlight's comedy "Post Grad," the Weinstein Co.'s Brad Pitt starrer "Inglourious Basterds" and other late summer and fall releases.

    by gruntybear

Everything about "Avatar" so far has been monumentally underwhelming. What few production/marketing stills have been available, the videogame aesthetics, the big blue "alien" chick - it all smacks of coming in at about the level of "cool" that Disney's "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" could muster. In other words, not very much. Unless it's the only "sciffy" pic going this Christmas, I'm smelling a flop.

No one fucking talked about it out of Comic Con. Every news outlet (outside of Geekdom) hardly even mentioned it. I think to most it was a in the scolling text on the bottom of the screen. Did G4 even interview Cameron? The biggest thing out of comic com this year was District 9. While it may not flop Speed Racer style, I'll be surprised if it even puts up Funny People numbers.

Actully I haven't finshed G4's coverage of Comic con and may have missed a day. So I didn't really know, but since 75% of the time they just talked about upcoming shit and they never mentioned Jimmy C I thought they didn't have anything, and was really surprised. I'm glad they did I'll have to see if my DVR caught it. As far as news before its release sure yeah then the stories will appear about it. But movies are starting to live and die based on Comic Con buzz and it didn't create a huge amount of buzz. I'm just guessing that it will flop, and it won't even really flop but I'm guessing huge second weekend drop offs 60% or more.

This marketing ploy MAY have worked back in the 80's or 90's, but it is a very serious gamble nowadays. And the odds are not in favor of the film. Let's hope this footage is game-changing. Cause if it's not, people will not care at all.

    by mandrakeroot

Why the fuck are some of you so eager for this to fail? All you do is bitch and moan about remakes, then finally something new comes along, and you bitch and moan about that too. And if it's not And then most of you will say "well District 9 blah blah", well yeah this movies also coming out three months earlier. And who said you have to stand by one movie and can't be excited for many? It's always "fuck Avatar, (insert any lamer movie) is what I'm excited about". And the funny thing is every single one of you will be in the theater when it comes out. And if it sucks? So what, I'm just glad we've got a filmmaker still willing to try to give us something new and exciting. If you honestly can't muster any excitement for a new Cameron movie, a man who gave us four brilliant sci-fi movies, then I just feel bad for you. But then again, maybe your the same crowd who's got Transformers closing in on 400 million.

It seems most of the haters have formulated their opinion on almost nothing. A few posters, "a couple" less than stellar footage reviews (mostly from wanks like Devin), and some toys. But I bet its all just some unhealthy disdain for Cameron's success that's really the reason.

    I smell desperation

    by chariowalda_barbarossa

This free Avatar day seems kind of pointless, those who are bothering to get tickets and come to their next Imax theatre for a free preview are exacly those poeple who'd buy a ticket for the film anyway, even if they doubled the prices.

I think they are desperate to generate some hype. They thought the fans salivating in eager anticipation would be enough to get the buzz going, but they've waited too long. The fanboy geeks, annoyed by all the secrecy are beginning to turn aganst the movie. See this site..

By now the bosses must have realized that, after all, it's just a movie they have there, not the second coming of Christ. And a darn expensive movie. And a movie they've been keeping so close to the chest the general public won't even notice when it opens.

And the media... they'll cary the news around the globe: "The IMAX 3D is such a spectacular spectacle." And "immersive" will be the word of the day, to which Joe the plumber is going to say: "I ani't got no IMAX next door, so why even bother?"

AVATAR IS GOING TO SUCK MEYE BALLS!

I HAVE TO AGREE THAT SHOWING 15 MINUTES IS POINTLESS...

    by carlthormark1978

I'm really looking forward to the movie but the fact is that Cameron is an egomaniac who is trying to drive cinema towards 3-D because he has a hard on for it when I couldn't care less about the format. It's just a gimmick. He also doesn't care that the average person doesn't have the money to blow almost $20 just to see a movie. By pushing for digital 3-D theatres that will charge a fortune, Cameron is helping drive the theatre going experience into a tar pit. If the only theatres around me are charging $15 - $20 dollars a pop to see the garbage that Hollywood is putting out, I'll stick to downloading thank you very much.

Anyone who thinks Avatar will flop is an idiot

    by turdontherun

I'll take that bet. Not a snowball's chance in hell. Avatar will be one of the -if not THE -best movies of the 21st century so far - and it will be one of the highest grossing as well. Cameron simply doesn't fuck up, doubters be damned. However, while Cameron won't drop the ball when it comes to the movie itself, I'm afraid the shoddy Fox marketing divison may not be doing a great job. They are keeping the arrangements of this Avatar Day awfully close to the wire; moreover, who will be even aware of it, and want to go see it in the first place? The only answer can be hard-core geeks; after all, the general public are only vaguely aware of this, if at all. And quite frankly hard-core geeks are already sold on the movie. Maybe this is Cameron's way of saying thanks to the fans who have waited so long, but a much better idea would have been to screen this footage in front of an IMAX screening of Harry Potter or something, where people would be going to the theatre anyway. Hopefully, the trailer that comes out the same day is mind-blowing, because that's what most will see, probably on you tube or some other video sharing site. That's the one that's going to make the difference to the mass audience.

All we ever hear about it is how ground breaking it is? Wow good for you. And going off of the lack of coverage of the comic con response does not really go over well. A lot of people saw the footage but all we ever heard about from Comic Con was Iron Man 2: Die Harder, Twilight 2: Die Harder and District 9. You think if Avatar was something amazing it would have gotten more buzz. And there is original shit being made right now....and no one is watching it. transformers is huge piece of shit, everybody knows that even if you dont. but it made huge load of money, making bay, one of the worst action director around, currently THE HOTTEST blockbuster director around.

and now cameron, the man who made T1, T2, TRUE LIES, ALIENS, and that sinking boat movie who made tons of money, THE REAL DEAL at crafting truly awesome huge action set pieces, THE LEGIT BEST action director around, is coming back after a decade long hiatus,
and all you do is... "wawawa who gives a shit about cameron, content matter more than director', '3d is a gimmick', 'no trailer is a buzz kill', 'none is talking about it'.

who the fuck are you guys??? are you a movie buff or are u a clueless moron? first of all, i've yet heard a negative comment from those who saw the 25 minutes footage. google the reaction from the amsterdam screening or the sdcc. just cause YOU dont read the overwhelmingly glowing reaction doesnt mean they dont exist. and 3d is as much a gimmick as sound and color were when they first introduced. it's all about making the unreal more real. 3d is only a gimmick when in the hand of lazy hacks. cameron's track record prove he always use the tech to support the story, never the other way around. and nobody cares whether you show your trailer early or not, whether it's cool or not... in the end all that matter, all that we judge is the movie itself. so, watch the film in the proper context FIRST before you talk. crapping on something you havent seen now, given the pedigree involved, just makes you look like a moron.

I dont have problem with this,i am too fascinated with the universe that lies beneath the oceans, but still if he is going to base an alien world entirely on our terran aquatic world, then how is it going this world to look so much alien,so much foreign to our senses and our perception.
as someone said above,3D is just one more tool to make the unreal look more real.but whats the point then,if the unreal doest look so much unreal from the start?
i hope i am wrong with this.

Just Imagine that there was no Avatar Film

    by spacezilla

by Cameron this year. How boring would this holiday season be? The only other film I think I am truly excited about seeing this holiday besides Avatar, is Trick R Treat (this is still suppose to be coming to DVD/Blu Ray this October right?!).

    by cloudrider`

of venturing into space always say, if you cant be an astronaut, be a deep sea explorer. it's the next best thing to going into space.
cameron is a huge space geek. i'm 100% certain his playing at the sea for the last decade is the extension of that space fantasy. it's all about exploring new worlds for him. merged with his imagination, who knows what his deep sea travels could bring forth? and unless you have seen the film, or at least the 25 minutes footage, how would you know if "the unreal doesnt look unreal from the start"? tell me you're not judging it from the one image of the na'vi.

this feels like the phantom menace all over again

    by nerd_rage_retard_strength

i am having serious dejavu right now. the insane level of hype and fan bickering around this film reminds me of 1999 before phantom menace came out. expectations for that film were through the roof. fans were jizzing all over the previews and trailors. but, ultimately george lucas went from being our favorite scifi movie maker to the most hated man on AICN. could the same happen to james cameron? yes. yes it could...

    by aceattorney

Boys and girls, you will be amazed by this movie. It's not just blue man-cats walking around looking at flowers. It's giant ferocious alien beasts thrashing through giant trees chasing around the man-cat. It's man-cat trying to mount a freaking dragon. It's man-cat falling in love with REAL EYES, not DEAD EYES (yeah, I went there). And all of it is 3D. All of you complainers - you know you'll be first in line hahahaha.

    by capnjake

Cause we know if it was Beaks it would be "I tried to make this as random as possible" and we would have an audience that was 90 percent his friends and people he wanted to suck up to.

See beaks if Jim Cameron and Imax can handle first come first serve surely you can as well.

I dig that Cameron does whatever...

    by jaka

...the hell he wants on whatever schedule he wants to do it. Sounds like a dream come true to me. The man has been to the fucking wreck of the Titanic, more than once! Not to mention a bunch of other alien environments in the undersea world that only a handful of people have seen, or will ever see, in person. Add to that a handful of films that people will love for the rest of humankind's time on this rock, and it leads me to think that y'all are just hatin'. It doesn't really matter if Avatar is the best film ever. I still don't have one fucking clue what the movie is about and I'm going to pay to see it BECAUSE it's James Cameron doin' what James Cameron does. If Avatar is the biggest piece of shit ever, makes no money and wins every Razzie, he'll still be James Cameron, and we'll still be talking shit about him in an AICN Talkback. (shrug)

But in regards to this article..

    by jaka

...and the EXTREME fan boy coverage of it by AICN in general, I have mixed emotions. On one hand, I dig that JC is being so open with geekdom at large. He didn't NEED ComiCon, but he worked it hard anyway. I've seen coverage of that panel at news sites that wouldn't know cool or geek if they walked up and bitch-slapped them in rapid succession. This is just a further extension of that. I mean, come on - it's free! He could have charged $20, but he didn't. But the other side of that for me is my belief that he really doesn't need to be doing any of this. Clearly, people are foaming at the mouth, and other than being covered as an "event", very few people outside the "circle in the know" will get tickets anyway (other than those invited Cameron and "the money", I would assume). The coverage here at AICN, well, it's become a bit slavish and monotonous. But again, their intention is to cater to those that DO want to see it, as well as those who enjoy this type of movie in general (computer animation, possible advancements in film production and presentation, sci-fi/fantasy). Again, clearly, there is an audience. So when it really starts to annoy me I just skip on to something else. I've made it far enough without knowing what this thing is about that I think I'd rather keep it that way and go in blind.

Does it feel like a Cameron film? Could you give us some details on the fx, the designs, the characters, how the action appears to be shot etc..? by _koala______not_a_bear_

Anything will beat Jar Jar, hands down. Avatar > Jar Jar. Smelly Pants > Jar Jar. Bruce Willis's bald patch > Jar Jar. The personality of a dead mountain goat > Jar Jar. A donut hole > Jar Jar. A 2 hour documentary about a donut hole > Jar Jar. I actually believe that Jar Jar is causing this global recession.

I dont really get all these people that claim

    by southafricanguy

everything they have seen so far is underwhelming, since firstly, we have seen almost nothing of the movie. And imho what we have seen looks pretty damn gooda as far as im concerned. The mech armour looks awsome (very battlemech), and the gunships look pretty cool too. Everything has a real world military tech look and feel. The alien creatures fairly original to me (especially the banshees and the thanator), but otherwise Im not sure what else there is to comment about in all truth, as it seems that unless you have seen footage, we still dont know what the hell the Na'vi look like, or what Pandora looks like....

Also dont get how anyone that claims to be

    by southafricanguy

either a fan of sci-fi or action cant be excited about this. Its not like we have had much good sci-fi in many years now. I can only think of COM, the firt two thirds of Sunshine,..and what really? The prequals were massivly dissapointing for most of us. The Matrix sequals are underrated imho, but theres no question they are flawed and were also dissapointing overall (though I liked them much more than I did the Prequal trilogy). Moon and D9 both look really good, but both of those are ultimatly small scale. Not that theres anything wrong with that, but I yearn for really good epic scale Sci-fi, with a massively created "universe" ala Star Wars/Star Trek. Nevermind that after all this shitty shaky cam/mtv editing/overuse of closeups thats dominated action filmaking for years now, I would really like some sci-fi action shot/framed, and edited by someone that really knows how to do it....

    by aceattorney

Honestly, it kind of feels like a Spielberg film. That could be an insult for some, but I consider it a compliment. The CGI is mindblowingly good. Honestly, I didn't know what was CGI and what wasn't. The few action scenes we saw were shot very well, with some point of view shots, but mostly panning shots. We get nice sweeping views of the world, and up-close looks on details. The 3D isn't gimmicky like Final Destination. It's use is much more conservative, creating a more pronounced depth of field, rather than being used to throw crap out of the screen.
