Playwright/filmmaker/author/producer/etc. David Mamet (who recently brought us REDBELT) is working on a new telling of Anne Frank's story Anne Frank's story

The film will be an amalgamation of the famed diary; the stage adaptation by Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich; and Mamet's own original take on the material that could reframe the story as a young girl's rite of passage. Frank, who died at 15 in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, became an icon of the Holocaust after the post-war publication of the diary that she kept during the two years that her family hid in a secret attic apartment in Amsterdam.

There have been many interpretations of this wrenching tale (my personal preference being THIS ONE
), but...to me, at least...the ideas driving this true story should be reinforced over and over again. Didn't happen all that long ago, and we still have a long way to go...

There was an "Anne Frank" miniseries on television a few years ago. One of the first scenes had one of Anne's uncles dressing up as Adolf Hitler and joking around and acting like an idiot. I was watching the miniseries with my then-girlfriend, and about twenty minutes later she turned to me and asked, "Adolf Hitler was Anne Frank's uncle??" That was a wtf moment!

If you want to watch a really good movie about a Jewish girl trying to survive in German-control territory during WWII, check out Paul Verhoeven's "Zwartboek" ("Black Book"). It's set in the Nazi-occupied Netherlands towards the end of the War, and it's suspenseful, well-acted, sexy, and just all-around a great film. It's even got tits, bush, and Nazi cock. Sure, it's not "The Diary of Anne Frank", but you've probably already seen some version of that story.

The claims that Anne Frank's diary is a fake are decades old and have been conclusively debunked. There is a single-volume version of her diary containing all three versions (her original, the version she herself rewrote for publication, and the final published version) and hundreds of pages of material examining the diaries' authenticity and debunking the claims that they are false. Old news, believed only by cranks and Holocaust deniers. Move on.

Both of you, do us all a favor - do some research on the actual studies done by various country organizations and research groups pertaining to the total number of Holocaust deaths. (You may even see some interesting facts/figures on Stalin's purges, etc.) I think you will find that the approximate 6 million figure is not just something that got pulled out of a hat.One should also keep in mind that the Nazi liquidation of the Jewish people was policy. So, as opposed to say killing soldiers or civilians who simply stood in their way of empire building, the Nazis effectively made the elimination of a particular group of people a matter of state business. Apart from the sheer butchery and inhumanity, that is probably what is most significant about that horrific event.

I have seen where camps have revised downwards.
So if you start with 4 million killed in one camp then revise downward to 1.5 million killed, that should change the total.

The problem with these arguments, the back and forth, is that I think people have a hard time dealing with propaganda. I'm not really sure how the holocaust numbers were figured but I have followed the Iraqi death toll numbers in the past. So it breaks down like this; In 2007-8 there was a study released saying that the Iraqi death toll was 500k to 1 million dead. But the administration only claimed to kill 70k or so. Because the 70k was the direct result of the Allied Forces bombings, shootings ect. The 500k-1 million number is the number of people who died because of the US overthrowing the Iraqi government. So if US never invaded then those 500 - 1 million people would probably be alive today.
I would guess this is the same way they figured out the number of people dying in WWII. So were 6 million people killed by gas chambers, I would think not. But did millions of Jews die because of Nazi policies, yes. There's your holocaust. -

People always say a movie about the holocaust is always Oscar Gold.
Only one movie has ever won best picture that was about the Holocaust - Schindler's List. The Pianist won best director and was nominated, but it never won best picture. In fact, in the 60+ years since the end of WWII and the Holocaust there have only been four movies about the event ever nominated (Schindler's List, The Pianist, Diary of Anne Frank and Judgement at Nuremberg). Just four in 60+ years (or 4 out of 315; 1.27% of all movies nominated have been about the Holocaust since 1945).
You may go back to you anti-semitic assertions that the Jews completely run Hollywood and the Media again. Thank you. -

Its undeniable that as a topic in the last 60 years it has feautred prominently in both movies, tv and documentaries.
The question for me, is why has it been much more prevelant than other genocides across the world in that time in media. Is it because Jews are prominent in the entertainment industry (not a criticism, seems quite normal to want to tell a story that means a lot to you), the amount of infomration has been more open compared to Russia or China, Western/European guilt, fascination with the Nazis, or most probably a combination of this and more.
The guilt thing fascinates me and to that the way we in the west (I am from Australia) view Middle East. To simplify things I would say that my father's generation (60ish) viewed Jews as "good" and Arabs as "bad". Whereas my generation (30ish) and younger don't see things so black and white anymore. I wonder whether this is because the guilt is starting to disipate. -

And yet, how many people in the the west know this? Those other holocausts, they might be little known outside the USA and the west, but the people who suffered them, they don't forget.

Why does America itself hold such a fascination with the Holocaust? I mean, while comics had a lot of jews in the early days (Stan Lee, Kirby, Ditko, Siegel, Shuster, Kane, etc) it had very few major Jewish talent from the Bronze Age on. YET you find more references to the Holocaust in the 70s and 80s than you ever did when Lee & Kirby were the face of Marvel; Neither John Byrne or Chris Claremont are Jewish, yet they made Magneto a jewish Holocaust survivor and had their own Nazi-like genocide story with Days of Future Past.
The question isn't that Jews push the Holocaust story, the question is why does it resonate with so many non-Jewish people here in the States. And one of the big reasons is because it was the thing that made the Nazis completely evil and makes us without a doubt the good guys in WWII.
Sure there has been a lot of other genocide, but none of them are tied to one of our greatest accomplishments. Hell one genocide, Rawanda, we don't want to hear about because it brings up the fact that we did nothing. At least with the Holocaust we can say we went out and fought the Nazis.
And also, the Holocaust happened in Western Europe amongst an enlightened country; that also draws our attention. Their is a lot more similarities between us and Germany (especially back in the 40s) than there is between us and Turkey (who killed millions of Armenians). It is unfortunate but the truth is not all genocide are viewed as being equal. That is just human nature - we can relate more towards the Holocaust than we can to other atrocities. -

Th reason that the comics (and other popular media) doenplayed the "Jewish angle" (including the Holocaust) was that until the late 1960s it was not fashionable to call attention to one's ethnicity. My point was that despite the fact you had more Jewish artist and writers in the 40s, 50s & 60s, it wasn't until the 70s or 80s that they started talking about the Holocaust. And a lot of them were not Jewish. So if it was a jewish media conspiracy to push the victim angle, why was it that the non-Jewish comic book creators felt compelled to comment on it? Because it wasn't a jewish issue - the Holocaust is a Western European issue. And is very much part of the American psyche since it is part of WWII.
