Column by Scott Green
Moviehole is reporting that Wolfgang Peterson is developing a live action adaptation of Paprika based on the Satoshi Kon anime movie (featured here) and/or original Yasutaka Tsutsui (the Girl Who Lept Through Time) novel. The story follows a psychotherapist with a device allowing her to enter the dreams of her patients.
The anime movie is currently available in North America from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
An English translation of the novel is available in UK from Alma Books.

...but didn't.
-
...and this is pretty much a horrific idea.
-
And really how? That parade scene at the end? Just don't see it.
-
considering the options. Good movie though, great in parts.
-
I would say that's the operative question. The only way they could make it more palpable to the less educated folks who aren't willing to watch the original in Japanese is if they dumb down the script and change the story altogether. Big dumb stupid idea to make a live action version of either film.
-
Michael Bay, natch.
-
And why should I give a flying fuck?
-
but if it is even half as gay as the poster, then I am out!
-
I don't think Peterson is up to this kind of surreal stuff.
-
own the usa rights for the other anime movie of the same director,Perfect Blue? If one director cant adapt this kind of surreal animes, thats aronofsky.
-
...that came up with this one?
-
add a fuckin edit button ffs
-
Its called (The Cell)
-
That is all.
-
If this is based on the anime, it is completely worthless and I hope it doesn't make it to the screen. However, as much as I loved the anime movie, I read the book and tried to watch the film again and it's so much different from the book and honestly not quite as good. So I would definitely welcome another take on the book.
-
NO!!!!!!
-
Sadly, millions.
-
big time.
Get Shane Carruth/Alfonso Cuaron to Direct. Claudio Miranda for cinematography and Weta for effects. Cate Blanchett as Paprika. -
Dreamfall: the Longest Journey. God, I'm such a fucking geek!!

-
i thank you.
-
ah i forgot too much talking and no shooting.damn and space odyssey 2001 is supposed to be a masterpiece....
-
but Parika was terrible. Great visuals and nothing else. If you want to see a good Satoshi Kon film check out Millenium Actress. Now that's a great fucking film.
-
I meant to say.
-
really? cool
btw Millenium Actress is the unofficial sequel to Perfect Blue.i love both movies. -

Does anyone think Paprika is the most deserving adaptation?
by revenge_of_fett
It was merely ok in my estimation. There are so many others that would be infinitely better. Um, Akira? HELLO? Vampire Hunter D? Demon City Shinjuko? Ghost in the Shell? The list is endless.
-
...is for pretentious low-life neckbearded basement dwellers. This whole talk back is nothing but assbergers in cumstained pants whining about their anime preferences. Let's talk movies, people. This is the guy who directed Never Ending Story, for fuck's sake. And he won't be able to do justice to your piece of shit, dime a dozen Japanese animated piece of shit? Hug that character pillow extra tight tonight, boys. Petersen is gonna tentacle rape your precious art form.
-
Because obviously anime is the only subculture of fans that dress-up and defend their selected franchises/favourite film/show to the death and mix in sexual deviency and slash fiction... Clearly there's nothing ever made in America or in any live action genre that I can think of that has anything like that, amirite???And as for anime always having a 'uniformly bland style'??? L O fucking L! Clearly you haven't been exposed to much... if anything anime post 2000 with studios like 4C and others are vastly experimenting with tons of different styles and character designs. You're a clueless idiot!Back on topic, Paprika had nice visuals, the opening credits alone are one of the most spectacular sequences I've ever seen, but the story and events that take place are just random and disjointed. Surprising to see this done by Kon... And again adapting that film in live action is pointless. In fact adapting any animated movie into live action is pointless. I can understand if it's a series being condensed and adapted into live action, or if they're going to the original source that is a manga or novel and adapting that faithfully or putting their own version of it out... Live action won't live up to the visuals of the anime ever, it would have to be a completely different thing to even come close to matching that sense of wonder.
-
instead of cyberterrorism, the cops in it deal with dreams. theres the old chief and the hot major who is super talented at what she does. the characters even look the same. overrated mediocrity.
-
It's not the right kind of anime movie to make into live-action.
-
If I wanted to see doe eyed women running around screaming unintelligible dialogue I'd watch Kubrick's Shining.
-
any live action film that could even compare to Paprika would have to be 99% CG! IT'S ALREADY ANIMATED!!! LEAVE IT ALONE YOU HACKS!!!
-
I can't wait for Tarragon: The Movie!
(i know i know) -
Paprika, story wise was unconventional and complex. Given Peterson's track record lately, I'm not sure if he is capable enough of bringing such a complex story to the screen. I for one would be excited if it works.
I don't agree with the comparisions with Ghost in the Shell. -
That's Kon's one true masterpiece.
-
Satoshi Kon is probably my favorite director working today, in animation or live action. Paprika isn't his best movie... but it might be his most fun.
A live action Paprika might be ok... if they go back to the book and take a totally different approach to the subject. If they try to compete in the 'surrealism' arena with the animated feature, they will inevitably seem to be lacking. -
I kid you not. Think about it.
-
I'd agree that Millenium Actress is Kon's best film. It's great. His other films are not quite up to that level.
But I think "Paranoia Agent" (the 13 episode tv series) could be called a masterpiece, also. It's probably the best animated series I've seen... it's only flaw is a couple episodes of filler in the the middle of the run. -
I am quite fond of Paranoia Agent and I definitely prefer it to Paprika.
It is funny that you should mention the filler episodes because in my opinion they may be the series' best. The one with the suicides and the other one with talking housewives are absolute subversive classics. -
when it was called the cell. I haven't seen the anime, but given petersons style, I'm seeing a bland version of the cell coming our way. YAY!
-
I can't imagine what Peterson will do with this material.
-
Move over, 80s toys, the new trend is films based on seasonings. Michael Mann's PEPPER is already garnering Oscar buzz.
-
I have to say I'm kind of stunned that Kon would have even agreed to this. :(
-
...Is the worst fucking idea I've heard in a LONG LONG TIME!
-
Who can turn down Vampires,Nazi Zombies and a cute ass sidekick? (Seras)Great stuff indeed.

You knew it was coming, bitches.

Wolfgang Peterson's BLUES CLUES film, featuring Paprika...
by monkey_king
That would own(not)

When all the little bastards who hang out in the manga section at Borders grow up and start earning serious money, anime and manga is going to be treated with the same amount of "respect" by Hollywood as comic book movies are now. That is to say, they will be whored out, sucked dry of their distinctiveness, and turned into empty cookie-cutter blockbusters that make insane amounts of money even if they suck balls. Just watch. Hollywood treated US comic books like throwaway kiddie shit for decades until Batman and Spider-Man showed the gold in them thar hills. Soon, very soon, it will be manga and anime's turns. The audiences are almost--ALMOST--ready.

This is why animation in the West will always suck (generally)
by ribbons
Not saying Paprika is an especially great film, but the reason it was animated in the first place is because those kinds of visuals would not be reproducible in live action. So someone in L.A. watches it and goes "Wait a minute... the story in this kids' movie is really more appropriate for grown-ups. Why the hell isn't it a grown-up movie!?" I once thought that maybe the growing popularity of anime might kind of have an effect on the way American films are produced perhaps, but I should have known better. I don't think Hollywood will ever look at the genre of animation as anything more than shorthand for "pap for children."
-
Wolfgang Peterson has lost it. Time and time again he's tantalized us with colorful trailers, then not delivered. He's old now, so maybe he's mellowed a bit too much. I don't know.
But "Das Boat" was the only film of real substance he's ever made. He's like Roland Emmerich: all spectacle, zero substance. Pretty people in pictures, not much else.
Therefore I'm indifferent to him directing a live-action "Paprika." I don't feel anything at all about it. -
What could a live action version possibly offer that the anime hadn't already done a million times better? Btw, aside from the astonishing visuals, this Phillip K Dickesque romp wasn't all that great. Cool visuals, though, def!
-
why not do a bleach live action? GAWD DAMN! ... even with todays CGi I doubt they can come close to making this anything good ...
-
Can we get a live action Rocky & Bullwinkle instead?
Oh, right.
-
I always assumed that the reason Kon made his films in animation rather than in live-action was because they deal with the blending of the real and the unreal (except Tokyo Godfathers). I can think of many anime properties which make sense in live action, Satoshi Kon's films are not among them.
I also must say I agree that
Millenium Actress is his best film, but Paranoia Agent is his best work. Also honorable mention goes to his writing the "Magnetic Rose" segment of Memories. -
I agree with your opinion that "... Hollywood [probably won't] ever look at the genre of animation as anything more than shorthand for "pap for children.""
Hadn't thought about it from this angle before, but I mostly think you're right. When has anime, even the more dramatic, adult-spinning shows, ever been taken seriously by Hollywood?
Granted, shows like "Chobits" and "Dragonball Z" actually ARE for kids, so we'll leave them out of this discussion. Not that anyone has made a live-action "Dragonball" anyway.
But what else?
Does M. Night's "The Last Airbender" seem like a serious Hollywood take on anime? He might surprise us, I suppose.
Maybe "The Matrix," as influenced by films like "Ghost in the Shell" and "Ninja Scroll"? This film was groundbreaking to American audiences, remember, for its "bullet time" visuals, among other things, which were heavily influenced by ultra-violent anime. Which I loved. Thus the Wachowskis took anime seriously.
But I can't think of too many others. Thought I'd be able to, but I can't. Strange. -
Das Boot was amazing. (And the Director's cut to Troy was vastly superior to the theatrical cut)
But I'm not confident this will be what it ought to be. Petersen seems too locked to the studios' money, a Paprika remake would require somebody willing to make an artistic leap (and still find a way to squeeze in huge-budget effects).
I'm not averted to Paprika being redone, however. (And it's one of my favorite films of all time) There was a lot of Satoshi Kon in the anime, and if it were redone, it would need to be directed by somebody willing to grant us a look into their psyche. Can Petersen do that? -
the soundtrack is most excellent especially the fast and slow vocal versions of the main theme. The slow one brings me to tears every time.

I'm still waiting for a live action G.I Joe movie
by kevin_costners_recycled_piss
As opposed to this new C.G.I Joe movie they just released.
Ahhh, I bet I'm the only person who's come up with that. -
take really awesome ideas (like dreams-become-reality or fighting robots) that make up 80 percent of the airtime and then go and train wreck the plot with large-scale spiritual rebirth or the world ending by getting sucked into the main bad guy's soul? does it have to do with japanese religion or spirituality? are there some good animes that dont end like this?
-
It's funny; on the director's commentary of Paprika, during the end where the naked spirit girl inhales the bad guy's spirit, Kon makes a crack about how if this was an American movie, there'd be a big fight and explosions.
(The director's commentary for paprika is really funny. Lots of Satoshi Kon giggling.) -
expensive as hell, but if they could adapt that.... wow. Even when I saw it I was wondering when someone would adapt it. Although I did find it funny that the Japanese woman would visualize herself as a white woman action hero.
-
Wake me up when they start making real movies, not this nonsensical tripe.
-
leave enough alone already! yeah, let's remake every cool things made overseas and turn them into american movies the middle americans can understand! becuase now, all the characters look caucasian and they all speak ENGLISH! yeah, let's remake the ring, let's remake let the right one in, let's remake oldboy, let's remake akira, ghost in the shell, and paprika!
FUCK HOLLYWOOD and FUCK YOU dumbed shit americans who will pay to see these movies! i was in line to get ticket for crouching tiger, and these two ladies were in front movie, selecting which movies to see. one of them suggested crouching tiger, the other said 'but it doesnt speak english', then the two selected another movie.' that's THE REASON hollywood continues to butcher foreign movies, because of the morons among you! -
Paprika.
-
The film's called Until The End Of The World. So fuck off Hollywood -- Satoshi Kon's Paprika is fine as is. Leave it the fuck alone.
-
They always pixelate the good shit anyway.
-
That's all.
-
The Wachowskis actually did do a brilliant adaptation of anime with Speed Racer! But pretty much all the critics shat on it because of it's purposely campy dialogue and presentation. The Wachowskis The Matrix was heavily inspired by anime and is perhaps teh first example of 'anime' done right in live action. I believe even their upcoming 'Ninja Assassin' will also translate anime action well to live action. Another director who is inspired by anime is James cameron and Avatar will definately show much love towards it. But I've got a feeling that it won't be until Cameron does Battle Angel that we'll see a true adaptation from him.
-
Is also making Trumpet Death noise the movie. God that sound in all his movies is fucking annoying. Fun game to play take a shot every time you hear it in A Perfect Storm.
-
Millennium Actress or Tokyo Godfathers would have been better choices. Oh well.
And what the bloop is up with remakes and adaptations going on? It's like an orgy of thievery. I'm all for reboots, if they're done with heart and dedication, or even the odd "based on the novel by..." movie. But for real movie people, be more creative. Please. For the children. -
...
...
Alright....Good...
I can't even wish them luck. There are so many promised movie adaptaions that actually DESERVE it. Paprika is already a movie, and came out farely recently. What woule be the point of re-doing it? -
I WANT TO SEE SOME BATMAN VS SUPERMAN WITH ARMIE HAMMER AS THE DARK KNIGHT. IF WOLFGANG'S NO LONGER DOWN, LETS JUST BRING IN UWE BOLL, BRIAN SINGER, OR MAYBE EVEN BRING JOEL SCHUMACHER BACK FOR SHITS AND GIGGLES. I SAY HURL THIS THING OUT FOR A SPRING 2010 RELEASE AND JUST GO DIGITAL.
