Moviehole is reporting that Wolfgang Peterson is developing a live action adaptation of Paprika based on the Satoshi Kon anime movie (featured here) and/or original Yasutaka Tsutsui (the Girl Who Lept Through Time) novel. The story follows a psychotherapist with a device allowing her to enter the dreams of her patients.

The anime movie is currently available in North America from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

An English translation of the novel is available in UK from Alma Books.

    What's the point?

    by cjseaton

I would say that's the operative question. The only way they could make it more palpable to the less educated folks who aren't willing to watch the original in Japanese is if they dumb down the script and change the story altogether. Big dumb stupid idea to make a live action version of either film.

    Question is Book or Anime?

    by purplemoose

If this is based on the anime, it is completely worthless and I hope it doesn't make it to the screen. However, as much as I loved the anime movie, I read the book and tried to watch the film again and it's so much different from the book and honestly not quite as good. So I would definitely welcome another take on the book.

    by johnno

Because obviously anime is the only subculture of fans that dress-up and defend their selected franchises/favourite film/show to the death and mix in sexual deviency and slash fiction... Clearly there's nothing ever made in America or in any live action genre that I can think of that has anything like that, amirite???And as for anime always having a 'uniformly bland style'??? L O fucking L! Clearly you haven't been exposed to much... if anything anime post 2000 with studios like 4C and others are vastly experimenting with tons of different styles and character designs. You're a clueless idiot!Back on topic, Paprika had nice visuals, the opening credits alone are one of the most spectacular sequences I've ever seen, but the story and events that take place are just random and disjointed. Surprising to see this done by Kon... And again adapting that film in live action is pointless. In fact adapting any animated movie into live action is pointless. I can understand if it's a series being condensed and adapted into live action, or if they're going to the original source that is a manga or novel and adapting that faithfully or putting their own version of it out... Live action won't live up to the visuals of the anime ever, it would have to be a completely different thing to even come close to matching that sense of wonder.

Paprika, story wise was unconventional and complex. Given Peterson's track record lately, I'm not sure if he is capable enough of bringing such a complex story to the screen. I for one would be excited if it works.

    by toonol

Satoshi Kon is probably my favorite director working today, in animation or live action. Paprika isn't his best movie... but it might be his most fun.

A live action Paprika might be ok... if they go back to the book and take a totally different approach to the subject. If they try to compete in the 'surrealism' arena with the animated feature, they will inevitably seem to be lacking.

I'd agree that Millenium Actress is Kon's best film. It's great. His other films are not quite up to that level.
But I think "Paranoia Agent" (the 13 episode tv series) could be called a masterpiece, also. It's probably the best animated series I've seen... it's only flaw is a couple episodes of filler in the the middle of the run.

When all the little bastards who hang out in the manga section at Borders grow up and start earning serious money, anime and manga is going to be treated with the same amount of "respect" by Hollywood as comic book movies are now. That is to say, they will be whored out, sucked dry of their distinctiveness, and turned into empty cookie-cutter blockbusters that make insane amounts of money even if they suck balls. Just watch. Hollywood treated US comic books like throwaway kiddie shit for decades until Batman and Spider-Man showed the gold in them thar hills. Soon, very soon, it will be manga and anime's turns. The audiences are almost--ALMOST--ready.

  • Not saying Paprika is an especially great film, but the reason it was animated in the first place is because those kinds of visuals would not be reproducible in live action. So someone in L.A. watches it and goes "Wait a minute... the story in this kids' movie is really more appropriate for grown-ups. Why the hell isn't it a grown-up movie!?" I once thought that maybe the growing popularity of anime might kind of have an effect on the way American films are produced perhaps, but I should have known better. I don't think Hollywood will ever look at the genre of animation as anything more than shorthand for "pap for children."

    Indifferent

    by cobbio

Wolfgang Peterson has lost it. Time and time again he's tantalized us with colorful trailers, then not delivered. He's old now, so maybe he's mellowed a bit too much. I don't know.
But "Das Boat" was the only film of real substance he's ever made. He's like Roland Emmerich: all spectacle, zero substance. Pretty people in pictures, not much else.
Therefore I'm indifferent to him directing a live-action "Paprika." I don't feel anything at all about it.

    by shibi

I always assumed that the reason Kon made his films in animation rather than in live-action was because they deal with the blending of the real and the unreal (except Tokyo Godfathers). I can think of many anime properties which make sense in live action, Satoshi Kon's films are not among them.
I also must say I agree that
Millenium Actress is his best film, but Paranoia Agent is his best work. Also honorable mention goes to his writing the "Magnetic Rose" segment of Memories.

    Good point, Ribbons

    by cobbio

I agree with your opinion that "... Hollywood [probably won't] ever look at the genre of animation as anything more than shorthand for "pap for children.""
Hadn't thought about it from this angle before, but I mostly think you're right. When has anime, even the more dramatic, adult-spinning shows, ever been taken seriously by Hollywood?
Granted, shows like "Chobits" and "Dragonball Z" actually ARE for kids, so we'll leave them out of this discussion. Not that anyone has made a live-action "Dragonball" anyway.
    But what else?
Does M. Night's "The Last Airbender" seem like a serious Hollywood take on anime? He might surprise us, I suppose.
Maybe "The Matrix," as influenced by films like "Ghost in the Shell" and "Ninja Scroll"? This film was groundbreaking to American audiences, remember, for its "bullet time" visuals, among other things, which were heavily influenced by ultra-violent anime. Which I loved. Thus the Wachowskis took anime seriously.
But I can't think of too many others. Thought I'd be able to, but I can't. Strange.

Das Boot was amazing. (And the Director's cut to Troy was vastly superior to the theatrical cut)

But I'm not confident this will be what it ought to be. Petersen seems too locked to the studios' money, a Paprika remake would require somebody willing to make an artistic leap (and still find a way to squeeze in huge-budget effects).

I'm not averted to Paprika being redone, however. (And it's one of my favorite films of all time) There was a lot of Satoshi Kon in the anime, and if it were redone, it would need to be directed by somebody willing to grant us a look into their psyche. Can Petersen do that?

The Wachowskis actually did do a brilliant adaptation of anime with Speed Racer! But pretty much all the critics shat on it because of it's purposely campy dialogue and presentation. The Wachowskis The Matrix was heavily inspired by anime and is perhaps teh first example of 'anime' done right in live action. I believe even their upcoming 'Ninja Assassin' will also translate anime action well to live action. Another director who is inspired by anime is James cameron and Avatar will definately show much love towards it. But I've got a feeling that it won't be until Cameron does Battle Angel that we'll see a true adaptation from him.

WHERES MY BATMAN VS SUPERMAN MOVIE

    by ass clown

I WANT TO SEE SOME BATMAN VS SUPERMAN WITH ARMIE HAMMER AS THE DARK KNIGHT. IF WOLFGANG'S NO LONGER DOWN, LETS JUST BRING IN UWE BOLL, BRIAN SINGER, OR MAYBE EVEN BRING JOEL SCHUMACHER BACK FOR SHITS AND GIGGLES. I SAY HURL THIS THING OUT FOR A SPRING 2010 RELEASE AND JUST GO DIGITAL.
