ARRESTED/SHUT UP Team Of Mitch Hurwitz & Will Arnett Developing A Third Fox Sitcom!!

Published at:  Aug 11, 2009 1:23:11 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Writer-producer Mitch Hurwitz and actor Will Arnett, who previously collaborated on the Fox sitcoms “Arrested Development” and “Sit Down Shut Up,” are developing a third, untitled comedy for the network.

The pilot, which just got a script commitment, will be written by Hurwitz, Arnett and fellow “Arrested”/“Shut Up” vet Jim Vallely.

The Hollywood Reporter describes the premise:

It stars Arnett as a rich Beverly Hills jackass who falls in love with a charitable tree-hugging woman who can't stand his lifestyle or values.

Fox could use a good comedy. It just announced the series finale of its best sitcom, "King of the Hill," will air Sept. 13.

    by funnyhat

they put a bunch of funny people with almost no voice acting talent into characters who were more one dimensional than anything id seen before. and the writing was as bad as an episode of spongebob squarepants. as a fan of arressted development i was really really saddened by that pathetic excuse of a show.

I say 7. Oh, and nice jab at Family Guy, Herc. Not liking it is one thing. But the fact you hold King Of The Hill in such high regard is hilarious.

  • I loved Arnett in Arrested but I'm not sure he can carry a show or that I wan't to see him as a lead.
Make that damn AD movie Hurwitz and than think of something worthy for HBO or Showtime. P.S. King of The Hill sucks almost as bad as hercs taste. Even the tired Simpsons are way funnier in it's ..what?...43th season.

My most-looked-forward-to sitcom is the title in my subject line. It is written by and stars David Cross. It also stars Will Arnett and Spike Jonze. God bless Channel 4 here in the UK for making this pilot. Hopefully it will be good and a series will follow.

Has AD aged well? I say no. Speaking as a huge fan, I'm starting to see why they could only eke out three seasons of that thing. Hence why nobody wants a giant AD quotefest today, Leets.

    by crow3711

You created comedy gold. Possibly the funniest sitcom of all-time. Just make the movie. I honestly don't believe you'll ever come up with an idea as creative and complex as the storylines and subtle jokes and everything that went into Arrested Development. Just make the movie already. Seriously.

    by danielkurland

Did you haters watch beyond the first episode? I'm shocked because the humor was INCREDIBLY similar to that of AD. Hurwitz and Vallely already have a new pilot for the Fall, so I don't know how I feel about this and them splitting their time, especially with FOX, provided they said they would air the rest of "Sit Down" in July, and it just never happened. I AM estatic/surprised that King of the Hill is getting a proper series finale though.

Right, because Fox, a business trying to turn a profit, is at fault for canceling shows that don't have wide enough an appeal to find an audience? They should just broadcast low-performing shows out of the kindness of their hearts, right?

FOX's actual mandate on animated programming is...

    by danielkurland

"We want it to be more like Family Guy." I am not even kidding. I've been there, and that is all they're looking for right now. When that is their perogative, it's not surprising to see why they cancel all of this stuff, but I don't see why they're greenlighting it to begin with. GO ELSEWHERE writers/directors!

That's my fucking point. FOX is looking for something watered down with mass appeal to turn a profit, and that's fine. But if Hurwitz wants to continue making comedies like AD that are smart and quirky and might only bring in a cult audience there are better fits out there as far as networks go. Like, I don't know HBO, Showtime or AMC. Take emmy darling MadMen for example. It gets extremely abysmal ratings as far as network standards go but AMC has faith in the show and Matt Wiener and greenlit 3 seasons already and will most likely continue to do so. Hurwitz would probably fare alot better in a situation like that than trying to please FOX with the shit they churn out.

Thank you. Someone else recognizes the (very AD-like) humor of "Sit Down, Shut Up".

BTW, Fox plans to air the rest of the episodes this fall at midnight on Saturdays (where that Spike Feresten show aired). If you ask me, it's just another excuse for Fox to can the show because "it's not getting good ratings", which tends to happen to a show when you schedule it at FUCKING MIDNIGHT ON SATURDAY! Still, it'll be nice to see the rest of the episodes.

In a year that's brought us the likes of "The Goode Family" and "DJ and the Fro", anyone complaining that *this* show sucks has no right to an opinion.

couldnt help slip one in....Arrested Developmentis without a doubt the best sitcom in the past 10 years, unrivalled when you take out Seinfeld and Frasier. My "Dr. Funke's 100 Percent Natural Good-Time Family Band Solution" t-shirt is sill a prized possesion. Even during the dark times of the depression when all my friends employment prospects were dwindling people still managed to crack a smile "theres always money in the banana stand" was mentioned

  • I'm excited for this. Everyone's follow up to anything that was a hit almost universally blows. Unless you're the Smashing Pumpkins and your second album is Siamese Dream. Or Dark Knight following Batman Begins. Or Empire following A New Hope. Eh, the point remains - follow up sucks, third one way better.

    by zorak5

I thought the episode with the Canadian visitors was the series finale. You're saying Fox has one more episode left to air? That's cool news to me. King of the Hill has had its ups and downs. In fact, for some reason it took a few years for the show to grow on me. But it is a great show, and it lasted far longer than I ever could have imagined when it first started. It deserves some respect.

    by gheorghe zamfir

I wanted to catch an episode on hulu out of boredom, ended up getting hooked all over again and watched the entire series for my third time and still laughed out loud. There are some timely jokes in there that probably won't work so well in years to come, but there's so muc other great stuff in there who cares! I missed the cartoon but am looking forward to seeing Arnett back on the screen, seems like we're getting lots of good sitcoms in the pipeline.

.they left AD air for 2.5 seasons, a risky move. I've since fallen in love with AD but at the time I didn't really get it. I think it might work better now and the movie would do okay what with the rise of indie films like Juno and quirky comedies like Superbad.

The problem with both of their cancelled shows...

    by hb_dad

... was that there were just too many characters. The frst episodes of both spent almost the entire episode trying to give a background detail for a crapload of characters, so many in fact that the viewer loses track and just gets lost altogether. Give us no more than 4 characters to start off with and then trickle new ones in gradually. Early SImpsons episodes dealt with the core family and only a couple of outsiders per episode which made it easier to get to know them over time.
