New Fantastic Fest titles drop! ZOMBIELAND, new Miike, new Romero, DAYBREAKERS and more!

Published at:  Aug 10, 2009 6:04:22 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a new update on the looming Fantastic Fest, one of the best, most kick-ass weeks of genre, cult and just plain ol' fantastic films to hit any theater in any country every year.

This is only wave 2 and there's still a lot more surprises in store, including things that won't be announced. There's always a bit of trickster to the fest courtesy of one Mr. Tim League and one Mr. Harold Knowles and their band of merry men.

Here's the full rundown of what's in this new wave of releases at the Fantastic Fest website. I'll highlight some of my more anticipated below.

First of all, I'm looking forward to the new George Romero zombie movie. I've caught a lot of shit from some close friends for my vehement dislike of Romero's last movie, DIARY OF THE DEAD, but I didn't crap on that movie for the hell of it. I love Romero's zombie movies and I felt his last effort wasn't worthy of his other zombie films. SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD I know very little about except that it's set on an island. The dude could pump out 20 movies I don't like, but I will always anticipate his next. He's earned it.

There's also DAYBREAKERS, the vampire flick from UNDEAD's Spierig Bros, the new flick from ALIEN RAIDERS' Jake West called DOGHOUSE starring SEVERANCE's Danny Dyer, MANDRILL, the newest action flick from Chilean badass Marko Zaror (KILTRO), Takashi Miike's YATTERMAN and Ruben Fleischer's ZOMBIELAND.

Gonna be a helluva fest! Can't wait to see a lot of you there!

I'M TIRED OF ROMERO'S ZOMBIE SHIT, DO ANOTHER CREEPSHOW!!!

    by carlthormark1978

I still say that Romero is a fucking knob for not knocking out a Creepshow sequel every few years. Especially considering that the first one was the biggest hit he ever had. It’s sad that the Director of the most important Horror film ever made, Night of the Living Dead, is going out with a bunch of shitty, half assed flicks that he’s only making to capitalize on the recent zombie trend.

    by tommygavinsego

... to actively AVOID seeing ANYTHING "starring" that horrid little cockney cunt, Danny Dyer. A shockingly shit "actor" who made his name thanks to "director" Nick Love (a Home Counties posh-boy who's made his name cranking out shitty flicks glamourising drug-dealing, football hooliganism and pig-headed tabloid vigilantism). Dyer often crops up on UK clip shows, chat shows, and in the gossip mags, and each and every time... comes across as a complete and utter TWAT. Sorry. You may sense, correctly, that I feel quite strongly about this.

    What has Romero earned, really?

    by tommygavinsego

I mean, three or four good flicks and a whole load of averageness in HOW many years? The Dead trilogy, of course... but don't be in any doubt that the supposed high-minded social satire is anything above basic fifth-form (or, er, tenth grade over there?) level. Like Tobe Hooper, he exists on long-ago former glories and hasn't really done anything of note in decades. I often wonder if Romero, Hooper etc only had one or two good films in them in the first place, and/or fluked it.

    Romero should do something else

    by thepilgrim

Jesus, Martin is a brillant film. Way ahead of it's time. Creepshow is all kinds of Campy EC fun. I love Two Evil Eyes and The Crazies. I'm tired of this man doing nothing but Dead films. I want more Dark Halfs, Monkey Shines, and Bruisers. Fuck I'll take some Diamond Dead- Hoping Bowie will still play the gig. Thing of the matter is this. Dead films are fairly easy to make at low/no budget prices now. Romero doesn't like strings. He wants to play in his sandbox with total control. I'd say he's tired of the big system, so fuck em, I can still make films, and this is true but he's trapped in the budget trapped with the dead. Please George do something else while that heart still beats. I know you watch TCM all the time. There has to be something brewing in that brain of yours not related to the dead alive.

    by mockingbuddha

And Devitto is one of my faves, in fact I wrote a song about Abe Lincoln going ahead and using a time machine and some genetics equipment from the future to create an army of ninety US presidents mutated into monsters and taking them to the year 2054 to take over the world. And Danny D. uses his own time machine (which was created by a guy from Arkansas) to create a team of heores to fight and destroy the president mutants. Devitto dies in the song, but his team destroys all the presidents and saves the world. The point is Devitto is very cool in my mind. I got a chance to play the song live at the New Daisy on Bealle St. HOWEVER, my estimation of the man sank about five ranks just now because MORGAN FREEMAN SUCKS ASS!!!!! Whenever he had his accident Devitto should have hired Danny Glover who is super-cool. I may write a song about Glover destroying Freeman in a naked blood match with... I don't know... Jon and Kate's kids as the prize? Whatever. I wish I could see this thing live, It would be sweet.

    Diary of the Dead

    by corn on the cobblers

I too was hesitant at watching Romero's diary of the dead because of bad reviews. But as a watched (with the courtesy of Youtube) I felt that same delicious creeping dread I associate with the best of his flicks. Sure the narration was a bit off putting at first and the acting at times mediocre, but hey Romero was trying to make a little indie flick for gods sake.
We all love zombies and no-one does them as good as George! Fact.

Romero came to Charlotte back in February and showed us some behind-the-scenes footage of the film. Based on what we saw and what he said, it looks like the movie follows that military guy that stole the group's supplies in Diary. So its not necessarily a sequel; just the story of a secondary character.

    by cornholiosbungholio

I was lucky that Diary of the Dead was my first Romero film, so I really liked it a lot. After that I saw the other 4 and loved them all. I'd say Diary is a notch below the others, but it still is pretty good. I thought the next was called "Island of the Dead". Guess it changed a while back and I didn't know! I am really looking forward to it.

    by sonnyfern

What the fuck? Is the dead trying to survive? Trying to survive WHAT? Being dead? Or is is the humans who are suppose to be surviving...and if that's the case...shouldn't it be called SURVIVE the Dead? I hope the movie explains it.

Fingers crossed this one does well and Romero actually makes a good zombie film for a change and who knows we might get a Walking Dead series, fuck we can only dream what an HBO Walking Dead would be like. Heck i wish the creative team behind DeadSet would make another, that was one well slick zombie flick made for TV that blew away anything Romero has put out on the big screen in the last couple of years

danny dyer getting beaten by a bouncer!!

    by themanwhocan

    Danny Dyer is a prat!
Like a post said earlier, he’s never been in a good film, can’t act, always on TV shows plugging his films that only idiots will watch, and the sad thing is there’s obviously a market for the type of shit he stars in, the type of idiots (millions of them) that watch big brother, shameless and skins. Maybe I’m being to hard on the guy, after all its not like I have to watch anything he’s in, that’s what TV remotes are for but I couldn’t help but laugh my ass off when a bouncer hit him in the face on one of those “British hardest repressed homosexuals” reality shows on sky, seriously check it on you tube, it’s brilliant, (the Danny. D getting hit in the head by a caveman bouncer part, not the actual show).
Cant wait for Daybreakers, I hope its not shit. The trailer was cool.
Diary of the Dead was terrible even after I had lowered my expectations. I hope Survival (silly title) is as least as good as Land or the underrated Day of the Dead, (I wish Romero had a bit more budget for that one).
True Blood is great when written well, (unlike the last episode which has corny as hell), but I don’t like this over use of Eric (spike- chough-chough) Northman, he’s a cool character that’s in danger of becoming a cartoon if he writers aren’t careful.
Still it is almost filling the horrible void left by Lost, roll on 2010!

Missing your serious Zombie fix? Watch "Dead Set"

    by col. tigh-fighter

The UK mini series set in the Big Brother house when the outbreak starts. Sure, the word Big Brother would be enough to put anyone with taste off it - it did me! But take my word for it, it really fucking works! Check someof the online reviews. Its a harsh and as bleak any zombie classic, and the crazy thing is the BB set-up works. The UK BB got fully behind it, and the presenter Davina Mccall is in it, and aztually makes a seriously good Zombie. Check it out, you wont be disappointed.
