SHIELD Mastermind Shawn Ryan Gets Greenlight For New Fox Cop Show Pilot RIDEALONG!!

Published at:  Aug 10, 2009 12:01:44 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Shawn Ryan, creator and showrunner for FX’s “The Shield,” has just received Fox's pilot greenlight for “Ridealong,” another cop drama.

Variety describes the premise:

"Ridealong" will center on three groups of police officers -- ranging from uniformed beat cops to the female chief of police.

If that sounds a little like “The Shield,” note that the new series will be set in Chicago instead of Los Angeles.

Another same old Fox announcement of the same old premise from the same old creator. Network TV is over. MAD MEN returns and that's all I care about.

    YAWN!!!

    by comicsniper

Are you fuckin' kidding me? Bring it on! The Shield represents the best cop drama of the '00s (I don't have premium cable, so I can't speak for The Wire). For years I was waiting for someone to bring the themes/motifs/sensibility of a James Ellroy novel to the screen and it was The Shield. Unfortunately, most of Ellroy's work besides LA Confidential does not translate well to the screen (Brown's Requiem, Dark Blue, etc.). When I saw the pilot for The Shield, I thought that finally somebody knew how to translate the 'bad cop who redeems himself through one final act of contrition' to the screen so I have to say I trust what this man does until I see otherwise. PS....where's ScriptGirl????

    by incomplete gamer

I'm sick of all these shows about really interesting professions, it's about time somebody develops a show about cops. I can't believe it's been so many years and nobody has thought of this. Thank you Shawn Ryan for your originality. Oh wait ...

    SOUNDS LIKE A PG-RATED "WIRE"

    by mullah omar

I love Shawn Ryan's work (from THE SHIELD to THE UNIT to ANGEL), but this basically sounds like an attempt to bring a diluted version of THE WIRE to a regular network.

I wish him luck, and I'll definitely check it out, but he's going to have to do some serious tap-dancing to make this show stand out from hundreds of other cops shows that have gone before, including his own, which is a candidate for the all-time best.

Ugh. This sounds bland and uninspiring.

    by rhuragh

I really detest the fact that the incredible writers and producers on some of the incredible shows of the last few years are going to some of the blandest most uninspired drek on the air just so they can make a buck. From BSG, Weddle and Thompson have gone to CSI. From The Shield, Glen Mazzara went to Life (which had a tiny glimmer of intelligence, but was still pretty bland). Liz Craft and Sarah Fain (former Angel alums too) went to Lie to Me. Shawn Ryan, while still working on The Shield, also made The Unit. Joss Whedon is back on the air with Dollhouse, a show that manages to completely lose everything that made his previous series great: character. Echo/Caroline, the primary character on the show, is reduced to a blank slate every time the credits roll. None of the rest of the characters get enough screen time or development to pick up the slack. In short: Dollhouse is all about plot. Whedon does plots well, but he does character arcs even BETTER. *sigh* I'm starting to think that the glory years are coming to an end. Roughly that period from 2001 to 2008. You know, that period of time where we had The Wire, The Shield, BSG, Rome, Deadwood, and Rescue Me all on the air at the same time (and I'm leaving out shows like Carnivale and The Sopranos, since I have no personal experience with them). Now what do we have? Breaking Bad, Damages, Sons of Anarchy, and True Blood (I'm leaving out Mad Men since I haven't watched it, but, from what I hear, it deserves to be in the list). That's not only a big drop in the number of shows, but also in quality. If I were to try to integrate the two lists above, only Damages and Sons of Anarchy would be slotted in ahead of a show in the first group (Rescue Me). The rest are in a distinctly lower tier of good, but not GREAT, shows.

I really love The Shield, but well, here's an analogy for you: The Wire is to The Shield like The Shield is to CSI/Law & Order. Once you watch The Wire, you realize that half the shit they do even as "legitimate" police work is fucking laughably implausible and downright illegal. The thing that was so great about The Wire, and is responsible for the universal plaudits for the show, is that it showed _real_ police work from the inside.

    by mullah omar

Sure, THE WIRE is a lot more realistic and detail-oriented than THE SHIELD. I like them both but I generally had more fun watching THE SHIELD.

However, even THE WIRE threw out realism in its final season when it started with the fake serial killer conspiracy.

    by rhuragh

Yeah, I know you weren't arguing. I recall seeing your opinion in many a thread like this before and know you respect The Wire. However, I would argue though that the ludicrous fake serial killer conspiracy wasn't out of bounds. I too was shocked at the direction the show was going with McNulty's conspiracy, but the resolution, with McNulty losing his job and reputation (yet not going to prison due to the politics of the situation), was exactly the sort of realistic outcome you could expect from his actions.

Even on a network a cop show from Ryan could

    by ev1ldead

still be great, but I can't understand why such a brilliant writer is waisting his time with such standart fare like The Unit, Lie to me and now this ...instead of trying to rock the tv world again. The Shield was not only more powerful and gripping than The Wire (which of course was also a masterpiece but in fact little more than a serialized and more ambitious version of Homicide. Even it's lead characters weren't as interesting and fully fleshed as the supporting characters from The Shield.) The Shield was one of the (if not THE) best series of all time because it got better from year to year (season 5 as the peak) and ended on a perfect note.

    1) it's on network tv.2) it's only a pilotThe Shield worked because all the elements came together. I loved it, but it's hard to catch lighting in a bottle twice. Ask Joss Whedon. And Breaking Bad is a great show -- with two striking parallels to the Shield -- a turnabout performance from the actor portraying the main character, and the evolution of that character as he struggles in the grey area. Both are also supported by outstanding ensembles.

    by evilwizardglick

The glory years aren't ending just changing. All media, well fuck EVERYTHING, is cyclical. Some cycles are stunning and others drab.
    That's just life.
The problem I see is when older talent dies/retires newer talent is never as top quality.
It used to be quality stars were virtually unlimited. Now no matter the media you can probably tally them with one hand.
Really, at least with media, we do need a global outlook. We need to incorporate worldwide talents not just local.
Frankly there just are not enough left in the US.

ALSO, "RIDEALONG" IS NOT A GOOD TITLE

    by mullah omar

Shawn Ryan can do a lot better than that title. I think I get what he's angling for with the title, but it's a bland way to capture it. Also, I guarantee that a number of people thumbing through theit TV guides will confuse the phonetics of "Ridealong" for the name of a beach, an Scottish folk singer, a fiber substitute, etc.
