Very cool, I'm assuming since this is an AICN screening then a seat is all but guaranteed, only the quality of the seating depending on when u arrive? I hope I dont have to fight with 1,000 other people who got tickets from radio stations and newspapers.

    Hey, everybody wear nametags!!!!

    by chakraborty

Nametags with your AICN screenname on it, then we can all recognize each other at the screening and finally put a face to the names, and then when the lights go down and the movie starts, we can cuddle and snuggle during the scary parts, we can rub up on each other, we can go to the men's room and compare the size of each others' cocks. It'll be fun!!!

It's an accomplishment in that it is original and visionary. But the main character is a South African Steve Carrell- and that shit got really grating after the first ten minutes. THe alien deisgn was great though, but you'd think that an alien race with such amazing scientific knowledge would be treated a little better. Sure, we can't use their weapons, but what about their knowledge of the Universe? Propulsion? Energy? I think this was too heavy-handed with the allegory. And the depiction of Africans was downright silly/borderline racist! Ooops!

    by burningastronaut

While it was a little confusing at first where to line up, will we get passes, blah blah blah, once we were in the theater everything was copacetic.

The movie is quite good, not perfect, but rolls along at a jolly clip and I was never once bored. It's a familiar story with familiar tropes but it's very well done.

The special effects are excellent, the camera suffers from drunken running but I didn't mind having survived Cloverfield, and the main character gives an excellent performance.

So thank you AICN for putting this together and giving me and my friends a good reason to have a good time!

    Big ups to AICN

    by blindreason

Never registered before but have been a regular visitor for years and just have to thank the site for giving so many a chance to see an incredible film by a visionary young filmmaker. Instantly the best movie I've seen all year along with The Hurt Locker. One thing, not more than 10 seconds after leaving the theatre did I hear someone whining about the most insignificant minutiae that no sane person would care about. There are definitely a lot of people who visit this site that love film but the vocal minority can't get over the sound of their own B-grade film school analyses.

Anyway, one last thank you to AICN and for the love of all that is good please do more NYC events. Whoever handled the screening did a great job and made the check-in process a breeze. Make these people your NYC event czars.

It was a good event ...more NYC events would be appreciated. The movie was great. The special effects were spot on in the sense that they weren't over done. They were used to tell the story and make everything appear real rather than be a distraction, and it's rare that a film accomplishes that these days.
The main character is interesting in the sense that he pretty much remains a cowardly self-serving person for most of the film. He has an arc, but it's largely driven by self preservation. But I think this was necessary in order to create sympathy for the aliens. That's another thing the movie accomplishes - the aliens are grotesque, and essentially look like large cockroaches, but you actually do end up feeling for them. . The movie has elements of Enemy Mine, Robocop, Iron Man, Aliens, The Fly, E.T., and many other greats, but ultimately the film is completely original and tells a good story.

That's amazing. I saw this in NYC last night and the special effects accomplish what most big budget CGI films fail to do - it looks realistic without the CGI distracting from the film. Special effects are used to tell the story.

Agree with what everyone said above. While it was hot as shit waiting outside, once we got moving, everything was supremely well organized..... spot on about the effects. They were a perfect compliment to the film instead of being the main event like so many movies seek to accomplish. My only regret is wasting so much money on shitty movies whereas I got to see this gem for free. Thanks again AICN.

On his best day, Steve Correll is a thousand times more annoying than the main character ever was. He was just some poor nerd who stepped into a heaping pile of shit and I thought that was one of the things that added to the realism of the movie. It wasn't that typical nonsense crap where we are supposed to believe some average joe turns into a superhero just because the world is crumbling around him. He was weak and self serving at times. I found his dorkiness way less abrasive than to pull a Michael Scott comparison.

Except for one person who was talking and luckily someone had to threaten his life in order for all to enjoy the film. It was an amazing movie, and have to agree with the Enemy Mine/The Fly comparisons, but it also is quite original.

Thanks to AICN and the team in NYC who put this show on. It was smooth sailing and even the cell phone situation was handled better than I've ever seen. Hopefully it won't be another 4 or so years between screenings here in NYC.

I had similar thoughts about the aliens at first, but the prawns were described as "simply workers" in the movie and they were definitely portrayed as semi-intelligent beings, so I took all of that to infer that they had no secrets of the universe to reveal. I mean, if SA hadn't broken into their ship in the first place they'd probably all be dead from starvation while sitting on their own ship.Anyway, my two cents.

But oddly enough, I did look at the dude and think Christian Bale once or twice. And I agree with Karma - I felt he was a believable hero. I really liked the path his character took too. I found him annoying and unlikeable in the beginning of the movie, though I was cheering for him by the end, of course. Still, he did some pretty questionable/selfish things, but that in turn makes me wonder what anyone else would really do given the circumstances, and I can't really judge him for it. I give the movie a lot of credit for making me think so much after seeing it.

Yeah, I was never actually going to wear a nametag or call out everybody's screenname...I'm just a normal, humble person. I think I may have seen Nortimus, though. Where was the loud guy by the way? Was he at the back? As for the main character, I wouldn't call him a simple nerd who just fell into a bad situation. Even before he was put in a jam, his treatment of the aliens was pretty questionable, like the glee he took when performing the so-called "abortions". Even if they were looked upon as creatures at first, such treatment of animals would still be considered immoral. I was rooting for him as the story progressed, too, but I think you were supposed to hate him in the beginning, because it made his Seth Brundlefly experiences that much more enjoyable.
