and is there really any doubt that putting Downey Jr. in this role was one of the biggest payoffs for a gutsy, weird move since Johnny Depp in POTC?the idea of Mickey Rourke as a scientist and Scarlett, as...well...an actress, are a little hard for me to swallow. but it looks damn well directed, kudos to Favreau.

Enforce no filming policy whilst footage plays.

Inject studio drone to film said footage.

Wait till Comic Con buzz simmers down.

    Get drone to release footage.

Immediately pull footage to create buzz.

    Repeat until teaser trailer.

    *Sigh*

How did I miss that Garry Shandling is in this?! As much as I like Cheadle, I wish Favreau had brought back Howard in the James Rhodes role for the sake of consistency. Oh well.

Overall I am quite surprised how well this series has turned out... I have an old Cinematical magazine from the 90's that has an article about how Iron Man 1 was about to go into production and then it seemed to be in turnaround forever. I was expecting the worst with the first one because I thought Marvel and Paramount would not give a second teir comic book hero the same attention and care they would give something like a Spider Man or X Men. I am glad to admit I'm wrong sometimes.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

    by zombieheathledger

The Good - Downey's usual irascible charm (he does the same schtick in every role but hey, it works well for him and for Tony Stark). The effects of Rourke's suit look wayyy better than the stills we've seen and it looks like Rourke took some awesome whipping lessons to give his whipping some CRAACK!! Gary Shandling perfectly cast as an uberdick Senator. Sam Jackson's passable Nick Fury. The TOTAL FUCKING DESTRUCTION that is War Machine. Don Cheadle seems to be bringing more gravitas to the table than Terrence Howard did to the character, though Howard looked more like Rhodey from the comics.

The Bad - No way are prisoners allowed access to the kind of workshop Rourke is seen working in, they would be working on escaping or making 'shanks' around the clock. Besides, we're supposed to believe Rourke with his extensions, plastic surgery, gold teeth (all of which look like shit) is a jailed SCIENTIST?? Biittchhh pleaasssee. Btw, can anyone tell what Mickey is saying in the voice over when they show the different magazine covers of Stark? I couldn't make it out. Scarlett Johansen is just pose, pose, pose, and looks completely wrong and unbelievable. The eating doughnuts in the doughnut hole thing, the eating doughnuts with the armor on sans mask at the booth, fail, fail, fail. And I know there's a lot of love for Rockwell on this site since Moon and I admit that I haven't seen Moon yet but I've only ever liked this guy in Galaxy Quest. Every other movie he's in he always come off as el douche grande, here, too.

The Ugly - Rourkes outfit still looks like shit. (And did I mention his gold teeth?)

Bottomline- Favreau continues to be a "B+" level honor roll student in the superhero movie genre where Chris Nolan is still far and away the reigning valedictorian.

Sorry, but as accomplished as Dark Knight is, it's not an enjoyable film that I can watch over and over. To say Chris Nolan is a better director than Favreau is a a matter of opinion and one that I very much disagree with you on. Favreau can make a very compelling piece of entertainment, hell, Iron Man might just be the most enjoyable and fun superhero movie ever made. And why? Character, for Favreau, is king. Unfortunately, Chris Nolan isn't the same. As I said, he's a very accomplished Director but at least Favreau knows how to finish a movie. Batman Begins and Dark Knight finished like a fart in the wind. The only good things about that movie were Ledger and Eckhart. If you disagree, fine, you're entitled to your opinion. Just be aware that you're very wrong. ;) p.s: don't you quote Box office if you reply either...Uber fans seeing the movie a million times doesn't make it better!

Spooky - While I agree with you that we are each entitled to our opinion, I completely disagree with your assessment. If TDK is the best superhero movie ever made (which I say it is), I wouldn't even give IRON MAN #2, that honor would go to THE INCREDIBLES, #3 Would go to Donner's SUPERMAN and #4 would go to IRON MAN. TDK tackles current issues (domestic spying, torture), it's a great action movie, character arcs, great design, it respects the intelligence of the audience AND it's funny. This is all before I even mention Heath Ledger's legendary performance. I found IRON MAN enjoyable but it felt like half a movie in comparison to the epic that was TDK, IRON MAN was a McDonald's Big Mac to TDK' fiet mignon. But that's not to say that I won't be in theatre enjoying IRON MAN 2, I will be and I hope it fucking shreds.

2 machine suited men vs. 1 man with 2 whips

    by estacado1

How is this going to be a fair fight? From the get go you know Whiplash is going to get his ass kicked. Unless Black Widow has the power to kill with her cleavage, then story-wise, this is going to suck. No doubt the action is going to be good, but even in the first one, the story wasn't that solid. The sequel will reveal the franchises flaws more prominently, just like what happened to Transformers. Everybody was gushing about TF when it first came out, but when all the novelty of seeing giant robots wears off, there isn't really anything of substance to it. It's very likely Iron Man may fall into the same trap. And Edward Norton makes an appearance in this? This movie will be a sure winner is if he turns green. But that ain't gonna happen.

You're spot on about Fav championing Character which is why Iron Man was such a joy. What excites me so much about IM 2 is that Fav is building on what worked (character) and improving on what didn't (parts of the action sequences) by having genndy fucking tartakovsky story board the action scenes. This thing is going to be phenomenal!!!!!

    by ominus

to be a TDK as story and character development are concerned.
Its going to be a summer popcorn movie with more, bigger, louder and a lot of fan-oriented stuff for the audience.
and that is not a good thing, not in my book.not only this means that the movie is going to be very hard to get balanced, but from i understand,it follows strictly the formula of the first movie.
is it going to be a good, fun, summer movie? i am sure it is,but unfortunately its not going to be a TDK movie, and its a pity because tony stark is a very complicated and deep down dark character in the comic universe.

This footage is bloated; they need to trim the political hearings down considerably or it'll slow the film dramatically. Even the clip shown here is too long thematically (this is a superhero film after all). And God help me..but Whiplash looks like ass.

its obvious that they have taken the direction of a lighter, funnier, kiddier film version of the comic characters universe.
thats why i said we are not going to have a ala-TDK more mature and darker future movie of IM.

    by carlthormark1978

The difference is that Favreau actually has taste and knows how to develop a story around the characters rather then the Stephen Sommers/Michael Bay school of hack film making were action takes precedent and the characters are a combo of shitty melodramatics and puns played by a bunch of stiffs.

    Oh come on

    by lex romero

TDK wasn't the be all and end all of superhero films just because it had "serious" issues apparantly. It had a shit load of other problems, being "dark and serious" doesn't make it perfect or immune to criticism. And in turn doesn't make any superhero film that isn't "dark and serious" just a cheap kid friendly cash grab.

The first IM film managed to be very entertaining whilst touching on some real world issues - IM2, if the court scene is anything to go by, looks like it will expand on that. The government asking him to turn over the iron man suit, his defense that he's a nuclear deterent. Those are interesting real world/superhero cross over issues that we haven't seen in other films.

In all honesty the "demon in a bottle" story isn't anything particularly special. It's seen as more than it is because at the time it was a big deal, giving a Marvel A list hero a serious problem like that that causes him to stay out of action. But it's not particularly well written or played out well. And I'd rather it'd stay out of the film.

ominus talks about it being "difficult to balance" well I think it would be difficult to balance a "man becomes alcoholic" and superhero storyline. All for what I believe to be is little benefit. A character can be realistic and "deep" without having some serious fucked up issue.

I was not very excited by this footage at all. To be fair, there is no spoken dialogue and its just a tease of what's to come, but Mickey Rourke's Whiplash looks lame. The only thing in this whole clip montage that had me a bit excited was the brief clip of War Machine blasting his guns. I like Iron Man 1 and have faith in Favreau, but I dont like what Im seeing so far.

The plastic surgery thing is a silly point to make as you can't really take something from an actors personal life and claim it impacts their character. How many films set in ye olde times have you watched where the actors all have perfect white teeth? Holy shit they didn't haev teeth like that years ago how am I meant to believe this shit now?!

As for his prison situation, we're all just bullshitting here. None of us now his background or situation. If I can suspend my belief that Stark can secretly build a suit of armour whilst being watched by terrorists, then I'm sure they've cooked up some reasonably logical reason that whiplash has access to these tools. Hell maybe he's in a similar situation, maybe some russian government organisation give him the tools and equipment to reverse engineer the stark tech whilst in prison because he's the only one they think is capable of doing it and has no legal/moral qualms about it then he turns on them adn busts out of jail with it?

Being intelligent and being in prison or being intelligent and dressing like an 80s punk are not mutually exclusive. I knew a PHD physicist who went out every week to an S&M fetish and Rock club in full leather and combat boots. If we can believe there's a super genius who also happens to be a womanising millionaire playboy, then why not believe there's a genius at the other end of the spectrum?

I think the only option any geek has is to suspend their disbelief. Obviously, the tolerance level for suspension of disbelief is going to vary from person to person--perhaps yours is lower than Pilgrim's. For my part, though, I generally try to accept whatever the filmmaker does, within (subjective) reason.
I mean, you could spend hours upon hours nitpicking all the logical inconsistencies from comic book movies. For instance, when the terrorists in Iron Man 1 decided to lock up Stark and force him and Yensin to build the Jericho, how in holy hell does he get away with building a giant robot suit? There's no conceivable way that they could get away with it; yet, for some strange reason, the terrorists see Stark testing out leg prosthetics and think "clearly, he knows what he's doing, so let's just give him the benefit of the doubt." THAT stretches believability.
At some point, a geek simply has to throw up his hands and just take things as they are. And I guess a gold-toothed scientist with hair extensions rotting in a Russian prison--who happens to have massive engineering aplomb--is one of those times when you just accept it, and move on.
I mean, it's not THAT ridiculous. China, during the Cultural Revolution, decided to arrest artists, scientists, writers, professors, and general free-thinkers in order to promote equality and solidarity of their Communist ideals. Russia hasn't done anything that crazy recently, but it isn't much of a stretch to assume that Russia arrested Whiplash because a similarly ridiculous reason. Who knows?

lex romero, IT’S CALLED PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT…..

    by carlthormark1978

And don’t think for one second that anyone on these sites are above it. People like Knowles and Devin Faraci crave, above all else, access (and cock) because if the studio goes out of their way to cater to them it boosts their ego’s. With G.I. Joe, Paramount had the first in what they hope will be a franchise made by a shitty director (Stephen Sommers) who made his last good movie ten years ago (The Mummy). They suspected that the movie was going to be shit and knew that most mainstream critics would trash it. So they refuse to screen it for any respected critics and, instead, heard a group of fat, unwashed, unshaved pondscum from various geek sites into a free screening two weeks before the movie premiere’s. This, in turn, makes these people feel like hot shit but at the same time they know that if they ever want this sort of access again then they have to blitzkrieg the geek community with bullshit fluff reviews. Further proof. Transformers 2 was no worse then the first movie so why did AICN and CHUD begrudgingly good reviews to the first move while trashing the second? It’s because Paramount catered to these people when the first film was coming out and once the franchise had been established, the studio knew that it didn’t have to waste its PR budget kissing geek ass, so they didn’t. So because Knowles, Faraci and Co. got the shaft they, rightfully, unloaded on the second movie because t was fucking trash while also trying to reestablish their cred after blowing the first movie. When sites like AICN and CHUD first showed up, the studio’s freaked the fuck out because they were worried that instantaneous word of mouth on the internet would kill a lot of the shit movies they regularly shoveled out. Now the studio’s have over ten years of experience with these websites and now know how to wrap them around their little finger.

BullShit on Paramount Asking You to Take It Down

    by cadderlysoaring

Nobody has Cease and Desist emails yet on the Youtube video. In fact, Jon Favreau was asking for feedback on the YT leaked footage and was RTing feedback on his Twitter. And Paramount's Tamar likewise RTed Jon's feedback.

The leaked CC Iron Man 2 footage on YT was likely from someone involved here and this was viral since Jon Favreau is a genius in such online fan promotion.

Don't go telling your readers Paramount asked you to take it down when in fact another AICN editor told you to take it down for fear of Paramount reprisals.

I know from the comics Tony Stark has a damaged heart, thus the need for the power source.
In the movie originally the ELECTROMAGNET kept the SHRAPNEL from moving into Starks heart. Then the mini reactor achieved the same goal.
So why the fuck didn't Stark have an operation, using an electromagnet to stabilize the shrapnel, removing the shrapnel?
Why the fuck does the power source suddenly replace his heart. And why the fuck doesn't he die when it is removed?
That was the only unlikeable part of the movie.

Mark III armor is better then Batmans suit, check, Robert Downey Jr. can act circles around Christian Bale, check, War Machine > any of Batmans supporting characters(Joker being the only exception), check, Iron mans story line is going to be interwoven with the Avengers movie. Batman's story-line will be the same old bullshit just a different villain. And Whiplash looked great in that trailer. Damn this is going to be sick!

  • Iron man was pretty good, not amazing or anything but pretty good and managed to do a standard superhero origin story with at least some style. (until the end)
But this looks alarmingly by the numbers sequel stuff. Simply didn't care about the electric whips or added miniguns and war machine weaponry (I've seen enough explosions at the Movies this year thanks) and so far there's nothing must see about this.
Yes Rourke can act but he was hiding it well in these sequences, Yes Shandling was good as an asshole Senator but that was mitigated by "what Movie am I in now?" Jackson doing whatever the fuck he's been doing for the last decade.
Hopefully they are saving the best footage and surprises for the Movie and not the trailers but that is an increasingly rare event. Otherwise this is coasting and relying on Downey's performance to save it.

For the record I'm 30 and reasonably successful. Comic book movies attract a wide audience when they are well made, hence the resounding success of Iron Man and Dark Knight. I grew up reading comics like most people here, so yes, it excites me to see filmmakers treating the material with respect. Based on that footage, Iron Man 2 looks great, and the negative comments directed at it are laughable and baseless. Now, I'm not certain it will be great, but I'm definitely excited by what I've seen so far.

Fuck you know Stark had the power source for his heart missing for upwards of twenty minutes.
But it isn't even the power source for his heart just the one powering an electromagnet keeping shrapnel at bay.

    by sirbiatchreturns

Good lord on that War Machine part. YES YES. Iron Man 1 rocked my socks off. The only thing that prevented that movie from being undeniably amazing was the weak 3rd act fight between IronMonger & Iron Man. Everything else was pretty much flawless. The acting, the script, Stan Winston's work, etc... Easily the best comic book movie in a while, and quite a deal better than TDK. Anyway, I'm AMPED to see this. I can't wait for an official trailer. I knew Iron Man 1 was gonna be amazing from the very first trailer - it was just that good. Hopefully I'll get the same vibes again.

    TDK the new Spider-man 2?

    by spectrebeeyatch

Before TDK everyone compared comic book movies to Spidey 2. Now it's TDK I am sure Iron Man 2 will be vastly different so stop comparing. You can like Dark Knight and Iron Man! These are movies not sports teams.

Anyway I want to guess something about Iron Man. I think Whip Lash will be a small villain at the beginning and at the end will see Mandarin who was set up in the first film. Think about that bald terrorist leader from the first film. His group was called the Ten Rings and all he wanted was the power to dominate the world. I think from the help of the other smaller villians Mandarin rises and that's why war machine comes out and helps Iron Man. Just a guess.

ANY acting fan has to be excited about Rourke and RDJ

    by industrykiller!

Two of the best actors to come out of the 80's. Both of them went through absolute hell in the 90's and both came out the other side as powerhouse genius actors. I could watch either of them read the phone book. It's ridiculous how people get on Rourkes case. The guy went through some bad times, big deal it happens, but he has more than proven he deserves to be on the list of the best today, and I still say he should have taken that Academy award. He may be eccentric but the guy is a charisma bomb, never anything less than utterly interesting to watch. These guys sharing the screen in a comic book film should make any fan of genre filmmaking happy.

    by zombieheathledger

We are simply having fun debating the ranking of the superhero movies released thus far. I say, TDK, others say IRON MAN, that's all. I collected both Marvel and DC comics until Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen came out then it was pretty much all independents like Comico and Epic until I went to college in the late 80's and stopped collecting altogether. And for the record, Silver Surfer would kick Plastic Man, Iron Man and Batman's asses altogether.

It weighs more like 60lbs or even less. How the fuck could that much metal possibly weigh a ton? It would have to be denser than lead. It's probably some newfangled ultralight alloy stronger and lighter than titanium. ... He's not actually built out of iron you know.

Autodidact: "It's probably some newfangled ultralight alloy stronger and lighter than titanium."

Does no one remember Stark saying "use the gold titanium alloy from the searaphim (SP?) tactical satellite?" (Which exists, but, isn't that gold looking, and isn't that strong.) I'd bet that the Mark III suit, in-universe, would be around as much as the Mark I costume was in-reality, about 100 lbs.
