Only Teenage Wasteland!! Swell O’Riley-Enhanced Tribute To The Great John Hughes!!

Published at:  Aug 07, 2009 10:52:07 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

I am not taking John Hughes’ death AT ALL WELL!!

A montage – combining an improbable number of iconic scenes from the man’s efforts -- that just set me on another crying jag. It has nothing to do with television:

RIP

here's a link: www.aintitcool.com/node/41966 go cry it out over there.

As for this tribute video, I would have used an 80's song, seeing how most of his "great" films took place in that decade. Baba O'Riley was released in 1971.

    by ill clinton

John Hughes was, more than anyone else, the voice of youth in the Reagan 80s. And yes, that includes DrPain, by omission if nothing else. John Hughes gave voice to my childhood, a time before most of us were concerned about politics, and the drama of being a teenager was much more cataclysmic than world events. Perhaps John Hughes should have quit writing teen comedies when he did, his movies captured a certain time. He'll be missed.

The Howard Deutch films are nearly impossible to distinguish from the "proper" Hughes flicks. Hughes wrote and produced those Deutch film ("Some Kind of Wonderful," "Pretty in Pink," and "The Great Outdoors"), and his fingerprints are all over them.

"Some Kind of Wonderful" is far and away my favorite Hughes flick.

Sorry, I never got the appeal of any of these '80s "Brat Pack" teen angst melodramas. Breakfast Club was preachy and fake - awww, isn't that sweet, we're all the same underneath our stereotypes. Fucking GAG. If that movie came out today, most of you assholes would rip it to shreds with clever terms like "whiny emo bitches" and "shittiest shit a shit ever shitted" etc. Nostalgia has blinded you and the sad thing is you can't even admit that to yourselves.

I wonder how many of the mourners here made fun of the morons who cried over Michael Jackson's death. Or are you the same people? That would actually make sense.

    by captainaxis

Imagine if a film was made today targeting the teenage demographic, in which the main characters all played high school stereotypes who basically hated themselves, but in the end they all realized that people are all the same. That's the kind of shit the average talkbacker LIVES to hate. But because it was made in the mid '80s when most of you were apparently teenagers yourselves, it's one of the greatest films ever created and the death of the director/writer is a national day of mourning.

Usually I'm not into the negativity, but damn... the only people I knew who loved the Hughes movies so much were girls and gay dudes. Guess I learned something today.

    I can deny your point

    by crash_duncan

I realize it's probably just a bit of trolling, and not a real point. But I'll respond anyway. First of all, it's impossible to really know how I would feel if it wasn't made when it was. That's when it was made. Just about every movie about teenagers made since then swipes from it. I can say I have enjoyed a lot of those films, such as Can't Hardly Wait.

Of course, unless it was a period movie, the sensabilities would be completely different anyway. The actors would be different, whoever wrote and directed it would be different with their own style.

I do think that if the same exact movie was made today, and had the excellent acting, the same flair for dialogue, and a charming, yet sort of dark plot, that I would appreciate a quality movie. But really, the question is kind of silly, the films were made when they were made, and my reaction to them was my reaction. I enjoyed them then, and I enjoy them now. If you don't, that's ok, different strokes for different folks.

    by read and shut up

...if released today, most of JH's movies would get a cynical "yeaaah, riiiight" from most of you. I'm certain much of what people are feeling is due to growing up with his movies - we ALL have attachments to things we watched while becoming teens. The danger there is that, in retrospect, they SEEM much more "game changing" then they really were. Hell, I bought the entire 60s Spiderman Cartoon set on nostalgia alone, and it's the worst piece of shit ever. So, I never bought into much of his teen angst stuff - but I DID buy into his sense of comedic timing and how he framed a shot. He was a DAMN GOOD film maker, and though I don't think he accurately captured (or realistically portrayed) "teen angst," he DID accurately capture a moment in time, and did it with a craftman's eye. RIP JH.

    Home Alone is underrated

    by darthvedder81

Everyone focuses on the bumbling cartoony pratfalls at the end of it but I think the first "Home Alone" is kind of brilliant. What 8 year old kid didn't fantasize about that? Plus there's plenty of funny, memorable, classic Hughes lines all throughout. And you're completely heartless if the Old Man doesn't "get to you" at the end like it did to George Costanza (the old guy and Culkin talking in the church has genuine insight and great performances from both actors). It's a holiday classic.

let me get this straight. You believe that I actually get a check based on a review? That PARAMOUNT will give me a percentage because they used my quote? You do realize - nobody that gets blurbed or quoted gets paid, right? It is literally all based upon different personalities for different media outlets and their various perspectives on given material.

It's amazing how clean and squeaky the real universe is. But it is probably easier to believe a vast conspiracy than the simple fact that perhaps your and my personal tastes don't exactly line up all the time.

It sucks. I did not come here to crap on Hughes, although I believe he is overated. I love Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Planes, trains, and Automobiles, and Weird Science, and enjoy Sixteen Candles. I still like the Breakfast Club, although that movie does not hold up well. It's ultimately very shallow with a lot of entertaining dialog. Ferris Bueller had a much stronger message.
