Only Teenage Wasteland!! Swell O’Riley-Enhanced Tribute To The Great John Hughes!!
I am – Hercules!!
I am not taking John Hughes’ death AT ALL WELL!!
A montage – combining an improbable number of iconic scenes from the man’s efforts -- that just set me on another crying jag. It has nothing to do with television:
RIP

He'll be missed.
-
r.i.p. mr hughes.
-
..this one hurts the most. That montage explains why.
-
Most underrated of all his films
-
Sorry true Who fans.
-
I mean, come on.
-
Shut it. Not the time. RIP
-
just keeping it real, guy's films didn't represent my teen years.
-
Damn you, Herc. Damn you.
-
"keeping it real" started meaning "being a dick". Must have missed the memo.
-
so... if something doesn't speak directly to your personal experience, it's shit right? get bent.
-
you're a prick. and if you think it's all white men and women that watched and loved his movies you're fucking mistaken.
-
here's a link: www.aintitcool.com/node/41966 go cry it out over there.
As for this tribute video, I would have used an 80's song, seeing how most of his "great" films took place in that decade. Baba O'Riley was released in 1971.
R.I.P Mr. Hughes -
Went from about 500 views in 3 months to over 60,000 in one day. More proof John Hughes was, is, and will always be a screen legend.
-
If I were a prick, I could have said something along the lines of "what? I thought he was already dead!". But I'm not. I'm only trying to say that his last movie was Curly Sue and that over that last couple decades, Mr. Hughes has been writing bad movies credited as Edmond Dantes.
-
thats funny, cause you know what you didn't write any of that on this talkback. here's what i forgot to say but no person goes through life shitting sunbeams. except maybe the baby jebus. do you think these you tube tributes / columns are saying every film and script written was perfect? no prick. he made some great movies that a lot of people identified and loved, and those stack of movies are actually better then a whole load of other people careers.
-
and people appreciate it, let us know. i wont be holding my breath.
-
John Hughes was, more than anyone else, the voice of youth in the Reagan 80s. And yes, that includes DrPain, by omission if nothing else. John Hughes gave voice to my childhood, a time before most of us were concerned about politics, and the drama of being a teenager was much more cataclysmic than world events. Perhaps John Hughes should have quit writing teen comedies when he did, his movies captured a certain time. He'll be missed.
-
I was pleased to see they got in Duckie's "Try a Little Tenderness" performance at the very end. Would have liked to see Steve Martin's race with Kevin Bacon included instead of all the hallway running from TBC. Somebody has a crush on Ally Sheedy, methinks!
-
Just his directed films, so no Wonderful, but Baby is in there.

What iconic moments.
-
Lockesbrokenleg, your comments make us snooze!
-
The parade scene from FBDO is unadulterated joyousness. One of the great things about being an artist -- the work endures long after the artist passes away.
-
and hasn't since. Adult angst as well! I cried like a pussy when John Candy revealed that his wife died in PTAA.
-
I wish YouTube (or somebody) had a clip of the whole parade sequence, because Cameron's reaction to Ferris' appearance on the float, singing Danke Schoen, is priceless. And then the segue from that candyass Wayne Newton to John Lennon is equally priceless.
Looks like Bueller hit Blu-ray three months ago; I'll have to pick that up ... -
a point and a nod in your direction, my friend. i thought i was the only one that liked that forgotten gem starring the bacon. great kate bush song, by the way.
-
Slams the door, slaps his face. The only thing missing from this brilliant montage. Ally Sheedy dancing during the solo at the end was kinda stunning. Bravo.
-
Take another crack at it
-
Just saying.
-
hit because Drew & Harry both were tweeting about the beautiful transfer.
-
My only copy that I have and watched a million plus times. It's frayed & scratched & wonderful.
And these children that you spit on as they;
Try to change their world.
They are immune to your complications.
They are quite aware of what they're going through.
- Bowie -
That was an iconic turn of the phrase right there. That group of Hughes actors are still referred to that this day.
I remember one MTV Movie Awards when they all got that huge sliver trophy popcorn; Vangard Award or some shit they were calling it then. -
Will most likely get overlooked because Hughes didn't direct it, although he did write it and feels very much like a Hughes movie.
-
When the fuck is Harold giving us his JH eulogy? Or did he not relate to these movies? Wait just a second-- Harry = DrPain?!?!??
-
with actual relevant and important stuff like mourning an absolute LEGEND...Hes too busy cooking up his NEXT "pay to play" scheme, whereby he gives an absolutely atrocious movie a glowing review, thereby getting a HUGE quote on the one sheet in all the papers and being mentioned on TV, THEREBY the studios MOST LIKELY giving you a nice payout. I would LOVE to open the books on you Harry and just see whose writing those checks to you to put Twinkies in the smelly fat body of yours. you should be ashamed you fucking sellout....
-
You have know fucking idea how he feels. Good thing you'll never be asked to be on a jury of your peers, you fucking felon.
-
i liked some of hughes movies, but his death hasnt affected me in the slightest and i still think that ferris bueller is one of the dumbest movies i have ever seen
-
The Howard Deutch films are nearly impossible to distinguish from the "proper" Hughes flicks. Hughes wrote and produced those Deutch film ("Some Kind of Wonderful," "Pretty in Pink," and "The Great Outdoors"), and his fingerprints are all over them.
"Some Kind of Wonderful" is far and away my favorite Hughes flick. -
Today, Hollywood churns out SHIT with nobody in his league. This Generation Xer thanks you.RIP
-
ill be watching the breakfest club, uncle buck, ferris buller, plans trains and atuomobiles and a few others.
-
Actually, it's consultations. Which makes a bit more sense, don't you think?
-
Still, not bad for my memory; which at most times, is worse than shit.
-
oh nvm it's only his 80's flicks in that montage...not to be a dick but it could have been edited better...what was perfect though was the part when Ally Sheedy starts twirling...that worked perfectly with the music
-
hottest chick in any Hughes flick...why Mia Sara doesn't get any attention is beyond me
-
That's Chet, Gary.
-
Sorry, I never got the appeal of any of these '80s "Brat Pack" teen angst melodramas. Breakfast Club was preachy and fake - awww, isn't that sweet, we're all the same underneath our stereotypes. Fucking GAG. If that movie came out today, most of you assholes would rip it to shreds with clever terms like "whiny emo bitches" and "shittiest shit a shit ever shitted" etc. Nostalgia has blinded you and the sad thing is you can't even admit that to yourselves.
I wonder how many of the mourners here made fun of the morons who cried over Michael Jackson's death. Or are you the same people? That would actually make sense. -
Yeah. WE'RE the assholes.
-
Imagine if a film was made today targeting the teenage demographic, in which the main characters all played high school stereotypes who basically hated themselves, but in the end they all realized that people are all the same. That's the kind of shit the average talkbacker LIVES to hate. But because it was made in the mid '80s when most of you were apparently teenagers yourselves, it's one of the greatest films ever created and the death of the director/writer is a national day of mourning.
Usually I'm not into the negativity, but damn... the only people I knew who loved the Hughes movies so much were girls and gay dudes. Guess I learned something today. -
I realize it's probably just a bit of trolling, and not a real point. But I'll respond anyway. First of all, it's impossible to really know how I would feel if it wasn't made when it was. That's when it was made. Just about every movie about teenagers made since then swipes from it. I can say I have enjoyed a lot of those films, such as Can't Hardly Wait.
Of course, unless it was a period movie, the sensabilities would be completely different anyway. The actors would be different, whoever wrote and directed it would be different with their own style.
I do think that if the same exact movie was made today, and had the excellent acting, the same flair for dialogue, and a charming, yet sort of dark plot, that I would appreciate a quality movie. But really, the question is kind of silly, the films were made when they were made, and my reaction to them was my reaction. I enjoyed them then, and I enjoy them now. If you don't, that's ok, different strokes for different folks. -
that toatlly stole at least 2 jokes from Weird Science.
-
I posted it... but I'm not sure where. Anyway, this is by a couple friends of mine for a documentary about the dearly departed made a few years ago. Ladies and germs... scroll down and enjoy "Mr. Hughes Come Home" http://www.joyfocus.com/audio/

Like the Brady Bunch, John Hughes' fictional world was a perfect
by angry mike
which is why we never see any black people (unless they're parking Ferris' car).

NOT a dbag. And you can quote me.

I posted this in the original JH Obit post, Mr. Hercules.

Was I responsible for you finding this clip? That would make me so Happy.
-
haha u know how genius you are
-
...if released today, most of JH's movies would get a cynical "yeaaah, riiiight" from most of you. I'm certain much of what people are feeling is due to growing up with his movies - we ALL have attachments to things we watched while becoming teens. The danger there is that, in retrospect, they SEEM much more "game changing" then they really were. Hell, I bought the entire 60s Spiderman Cartoon set on nostalgia alone, and it's the worst piece of shit ever. So, I never bought into much of his teen angst stuff - but I DID buy into his sense of comedic timing and how he framed a shot. He was a DAMN GOOD film maker, and though I don't think he accurately captured (or realistically portrayed) "teen angst," he DID accurately capture a moment in time, and did it with a craftman's eye. RIP JH.
-
Everyone focuses on the bumbling cartoony pratfalls at the end of it but I think the first "Home Alone" is kind of brilliant. What 8 year old kid didn't fantasize about that? Plus there's plenty of funny, memorable, classic Hughes lines all throughout. And you're completely heartless if the Old Man doesn't "get to you" at the end like it did to George Costanza (the old guy and Culkin talking in the church has genuine insight and great performances from both actors). It's a holiday classic.
-
How could I forget John Williams score? Awesomeness.
-
let me get this straight. You believe that I actually get a check based on a review? That PARAMOUNT will give me a percentage because they used my quote? You do realize - nobody that gets blurbed or quoted gets paid, right? It is literally all based upon different personalities for different media outlets and their various perspectives on given material.
It's amazing how clean and squeaky the real universe is. But it is probably easier to believe a vast conspiracy than the simple fact that perhaps your and my personal tastes don't exactly line up all the time. -
is that GI JOE sucked and just about every media outlet in the world agreed, yet you love it and they plaster your name all over the movie. Great PR for you and the site. But think about it, youre losing credibility by the second man and it didnt used to be like that. I mean how many people on this site ACTUALLY take you seriously anymore...very few
-
How bout a few words on Mr Hughes passing, huh? What youre too busy? The guy, between what he wrote, and directed, was a fucking icon for goodness sakes...you cant post 2 sentences?
-
if harry posted two sentences you'd no doubt complain and whine about that, too.
-
think about how many of his movies are staples. Home Alone and Christmas Vacation for X-mas, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles for Thanksgiving, and the original Vacation is a summer given. That's not even touching his High School films.
-
Can't disagree with benlinus on this point: John Hughes' passing deserves at least a decent paragraph or two penned by you. Seems like Merrick is slowly taking over your site for the day to day news, and I for one miss getting your 2 cents about something other than the latest popcorn blockbuster. Remember your LOTR site visit articles? Those were the days, man.Anyway, please make time to write and post more (on substantive topics) as you did years ago. After all, that's the reason why many of us (including me) started frequenting AICN to begin with. And especially now that Drew is gone, the site could use a bit of the old magic again.
-
If you're waiting for Harold to write something substantive about an icon like Hughes, just remember who put the ASS in CLASS...
-
It sucks. I did not come here to crap on Hughes, although I believe he is overated. I love Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Planes, trains, and Automobiles, and Weird Science, and enjoy Sixteen Candles. I still like the Breakfast Club, although that movie does not hold up well. It's ultimately very shallow with a lot of entertaining dialog. Ferris Bueller had a much stronger message.
-
accurately summed up my feelings about Hughes.
-
I could have done without the Candy/Martin scenes though - kind of jarring seeing middle-aged men amongst all the teen goodness.
-
...a dbag. Even dbagtodayDOTcom wouldn't label him as such.
