Heeeeeeeerrrrrrrrreeeeeeeee's Kato!

Published at:  Aug 07, 2009 3:22:08 PM CDT

Merrick here...

Songwriter/singer/actor/filmmaker Jay Chou has been cast as Kato in Michel Gondry's GREEN HORNET movie.

Honestly, I wasn't familiar with the guy but THIS WIKI ENTRY makes him sound pretty impressive.

Here's a pic...

And here's a sample of his work:

All due respect to Jay Chou, I really hope that this project FAILS. Seth Rogen is not, and will never be, the Green Hornet. Someone like George Clooney would have been a far better choice. I've loved the GH since I was a kid, and the character deserves so much better. Sadly, this will end up like THE SPIRIT.

    by harry weinstein

That's actually an interesting choice. Not necessarily the choice I'd have made, but not as bad as it could have been and not anything I'll complain about. I can't wait for the butthurt screeching from the hardcore kung fu fans about casting a pop star as Kato. Bricks will be shit even though Kato rocks a mask and therefore it doesn't matter if Chou's martial skills aren't on a level with Wu Jing or Donnie Yen as it's going to be stuntmen doing much of the tricky stuff anyway. Most of my interest is based on seeing what the hell a big budget major studio Michel Gondry martial arts action comedy would look like.

oh fuck, he's going back into the woods again to learn some more black mojo. I don't know this guy they picked. Hopfully he chews on enough stuff and his stunts are all him with little to no wire. If so and the film is good, then he could become a household name and move into many more american films. Cause lets face it. They make great movies all over the world, but america is film. there no other hollywood like hollywood. no other disney. Gondry I love, love, love your films, but you know man this is a disgrace. right up there with Lee losing his role in Kung Fu. Would Lee smile over this news and feel great about the choice. I think not. what you should be doing is getting a unknown no named guy who can really fight. Leave the actor stuff to Rogan. Give the Kato role to a fantasic wu shu raised crazy cool fighter. Do we watch Jaa or Jet Lee for his acting abilities. Fuck no. We know they can lay it down, and we know it's really them and we know the fights will be complex and graceful and as real and real can be on a movie set. after reading this guys wiki I'm pissed and sad that he won the role. How could he beat out a a bunch of real martial artist who can really do the fight work????

    by micklam88

i hate it when the movie producers watch a movie from hong kong and get it all wrong... firstly Jay Chou is a singer and his secondary hobbie is acting. He only got his chance to act cos he was so popular with his singing. Now if you misinteprate this with acting Kato is gonna be the worst film ever. Bruce Lee set precedence with his kung fu skills, you need to find someone with at least 80% of that skill. Jay Chou has 0%, and he will admit that himself, but not to the daft producers. Let me name a few people that could cut it... Donnie Yen, Tony Jaa (even though he Thai and not chinese) even Jet Li goddamnit!!! Makes you wonder why everyone thinks Chow yuen Fat can do martial arts... another wrong casting... he is an actor first and martial arts never!!! get it right you idiots!!!

Hollywood really must hate, I mean absolutely hate Chinese people and the nation of China--that can be the only reason they keep going out of their collective ways not to cast a Chinese actor/martial artist in roles made famous by Bruce Lee. They are the Republic of CHINA. Mainland China is The People's Republic of China. They broke off after WWII when the communist took over the mainland. But Taiwan and the mainland China consider them part of China.
And Bruce Lee was born in America and raised in Hong Kong, which was British controlled at that time.

    Taiwan = China?

    by porkchopxpress

LOL good luck selling anyone from Taiwan on that idea. Taiwan desperately wishes they could be independent of China and as they have a separate passport and separate government (the one the Communists drove out of the mainland), they are not technically part of PR China. Mainland thinks Taiwan is theirs, Taiwan thinks otherwise...hence the tension there. Personally, I think Taiwanese men speak Mandarin with a seriously sissy accent, but that's neither here nor there. As for Jay Chou, I saw him in Curse of the Golden Flower and he wasn't bad in that role...film fighting is more like dance than actual fighting anyway, and the guy can bust a move. So we'll see.

To dispel any misconceptions about this casting. Jay Chou is a singer/songwriter and has been in several videos and movies and has even directed one (in English it is called "Secret") which is not half-bad. Still that being said, he's not noted for his martial arts even though he tends to do movies of this nature from time to time. Also, he is NOT Chinese, he is Taiwanese. Taiwan and China are completely different cultures that sprung from a common ancestry/history. This is a hearts and minds thing here people (for those that care)...Ask any Taiwanese and they will tell you they consider themselves Taiwanese well as the majority of Chinese will say that Taiwan belongs to China. That is about as true as say, hmmm, England saying America is a part of England. America eventually told the 'bigger, badder' English to go fuck themselves and Taiwan has been doing the same for over 50 years...

I think the better analogy would be comparing England with Scotland. They speak the same language but their is many cultural differences. However, both are BRITISH.
Taiwan might be culturally different from mainland China, but it has been part of China for some 450+ years (before 1949 and the ROC lost the mainland from the PRC) and 98% of the population is of Han ethnicity and Mandarin Chinese is the official language. I think their is nothing wrong with calling Tawain "chinese"; they might not be China, but they certainly have a culture that is heavily "Chinese" influenced.
Plus, I say having someone from Taiwan is just as offensive to main land China as having someone from Hong Kong when it was under British rule (in fact, they are mostly Cantonese ethnicity and Cantonese is the predominant language, so they are less like the mainland than Taiwan is in some ways).

Furthermore, Rogan delivered an excellent and nuanced performance. He catches a lot of shit on these boards, and I can see why. But saying he "ruined" a movie that was good, in large part, because of him is total fucking bullshit. Fuck you, man.

Seth Rogen as the Green Hornet? Are you freaking kidding me???
Just what the HELL is this dopey gutterball doing in playing this character?
What's next- Pee Wee Herman as Superman? Or what about Joan Rivers as Wonder Woman?
Is that what this is coming to in Hollywood- the land of no brains and no talent?
    Give me an effing break!
This movie was SUPPOSED to be made over a decade ago with George Clooney and Jet Li playing the real Green Hornet and Kato, but Clooney STUPIDLY backed out to play Batman, and we all know how badly that went, don't we?
I cannot believe that these morons in Hollywood are screwing us over again with this hideous casting of Seth Rogen to play a great heroic figure like the Green Hornet.
Rogen is a fat and dimwitted gutterball with no acting abilities to speak of.
For all of us Green Hornet fans out there who prayed that this movie would take place, are all now hanging our heads in shame at this absolutely nightmarish casting of a knuckle-dragger for an "actor" to play this role.

I refuse to jump on the Seth Rogen/Judd Apatow bandwagon of hate. As for the Green Hornet; if it sucks, it sucks. Semantics

    by piratesbananapancakes

The Republic of China is Taiwan. True. China however, is the People's Rebublic of China. Don't let the similarities fool you. They, unlike China are a democracy, have their own culture and even their own passports. What might be semantics to you really matter to people here who are in constant threat (not kidding here) of being annihilated by the reported 1500 missiles pointed at them by China. As for your point about Hong Kong, it really didn't make much sense but if you come out here you'll learn that the Hong Kongese and Taiwanese people consider themselves about as much a part of China as.. well.. they just don't. Come out here and I'll by you a beer and prove it to ya. :)
As for what Media Messiah said, all I can say is, and I am merely a film fan, Jay has his work cut out for him... as does Rain who is rumored to be in talks for the "Awaken the Dragon" semi-Enter the Dragon Remake. And unlike many of you, I HAVE watched his soap opera , Full House... if you have seen that, I'm sure you would agree, he would not be the first choice to act in a bloody ninja movie...

Um, yeah, Ethnicity concerns shared cultural backgrounds and BELIEFS and LANGUAGE. That does not mean that Hong Kongese people, a democracy, or Taiwanese people consider themselves to be Chinese in the PRC sense.. When they refer to themselves as Chinese, they are merely doing so to avoid a long drawn out political conversation spurred on by the ignorance of people towards Asians, who want to lump them into the same ethnicity which they are not.
BTW: Mǎnchéng Jìndài Huángjīnjiǎ (curse of the Goldden Flower) wasn't bad but Jay is not so loved here in Asia that it guarantees a sure box-office smash... if they wanted that kind of monetary success, Stephen Chow would have broken records here. He's friggin' HUGE here...

I didn't say that they consider themselves Chinese in the PRC sense. But most people of Chinese ethnicity will refer to themselves as Chinese. HK Chinese, Chinese Malaysian maybe but still Chinese. The ROC used to represent China in the UN but now it's the PRC. They disagree on who is the "real China". HK people have the same language and culture as most Guangdong people. Are they a different ethnicity from each other? This isn't about national identity or political systems which are different but about the basic point that most of the people in these countries are Han Chinese and would identify themselves as such (in my experience anyway).

Stephen Chow is a superstar but surely Jay will bring in the teen crowd. Or has his popularity waned in the past couple of years?

Why the hell has this site devoted so much time to this film. Seth Rogen is not an action star and if had any sense he would not try to be, even if its with a wink. Also, when a movie goes back and forth and delayed with many director and actor changes that means its caught in development hell, and that means it will most likely be terrible. Maybe AICN's market research (if they have any) shows that seth rogen news is popular but honest to god, not a week goes by without news of this potential turd. I don't even think Nic Cage or Cameron Diaz can save it. I don't know, at this point, it seems like AICN is just crossing its fingers hoping its a great film. Green Hornet was not such a huge part of my life and probably not a huge part of a "geeks" life that it is so important. So I don't know what all the hype is about.

    What's in a name - Chinese

    by porkchopxpress

Okay so because English is somewhat limited let me clarify. Yes, in the west, we name "Chinese" everyone from Taiwan, mainland China, Hong Kong, and in many peoples' cases...Thailand, Singapore, and shoot...throw in any other Asian country, including Japan. It's like people referring to all video games as "Sega" back in the day. If you say "zhong guo ren" to a Chinese person, they will assume you mean a person from mainland China. If you say "hua ren" then assume Chinese ETHNICITY but not location. In my experience, people from Taiwan are particularly keen to be called "hua ren" instead of "zhong guo ren" because of the obvious connotation. Maybe they also just like being called "flower people." :)

Kung Fu Dunk sucked balls and the guy has the onscreen charisma of a pair of chopsticks. Initial D was pretty good but good in spite of him. Matbe Anthony Wong can play his pappy in this one too.
    Jay Chou???
Does these mo's in Hollywood even watch Asian cinema or do they see who is on te cover of their teen cheescake mags to make their casting decisions? I think we know the answer to that one cause jay is soooo dreamy. Shawn Yue, Nick Tze, even Edison "F-ed all of Hong Kong's hottest actresses and filmed their hairy bushes for the public" Chen. There's quite a few young actors in Hong Kong who can actually fight and act too. Check out Shamo, Invisible Target and Dragon tiger Gate (should be at your local Blockbuster)
    This project is toast

    Chinese...

    by celestialpudding

OK..Continentalop and various other people....what is it with you guys trying to say people from Taiwan aren't Chinese? 98% of "Taiwanese" people are comprised of Han Chinese ethnicity (mostly from Fujian and Guangdong provinces) and the other 2% are aborigines indigenous to the island. Of that 98%, 12% are from the mainland that migrated when the Communists won the civil war.

Demographically, Taiwan would be like an combination of Fujian and Guangdong province languages and culture. A difference in politics doesn't mean that they're suddenly not Chinese, the cultural roots run far too deep...people in Taiwan who say this usually use it as a political statement to achieve independence.

Btw Continentalop, Cantonese (Guangdong) is NOT an ethnicity, its a dialect.

What do you people not get?

    by the dark shite

Some of you are arguing that it's an insult that he's Taiwanese because the original guy was Chinese, some are arguing that Taiwanese is or isn't Chinese. You're all missing the point.

Kato is a Japanese name. Not Chinese. Nor local to Taiwan. If anything, the argument should be that he isn't played by a Japanese guy. But that isn't a problem. Why?

Because Bruce Lee played him first & Bruce Lee was cool as fuck. But the character wasn't supposed to be Chinese anyway, so stop arguing about Taiwan Vs China.

The people of Taiwan are ethnically Chinese, that's just a fact. They may wish to not be, but ethnically they are. They aren't a totally different culture, they have their own unique local stuff (as does anywhere) & a lot of Japanese influence too, but they just chose to be a seperate state.

But, the fact is, it isn't relevent to the subject at all. Not one bit. The character has never been played by the right nationality. So you're arguing over nothing.

At least one of them will be attractive.

Rogen will be the ugliest superhero ever (well, I mean, outside of Rorsarch). At least this guy will make a pretty Kato. This whole movie still sounds like a dog. Gondry has a terrible track record.

    No Idea What to Expect

    by cobbio

I like Seth Rogen. He seems like a good dude with solid on-screen presence and a crazy, self-deprecating sense of life and humor. Generally he makes me laugh.
But Rogen playing Green Hornet? Hmm. Michael Gondry is creative guy with a bright visual style, but he'll need to push Seth to get in crazy good shape and lose the "funny man" persona altogether in order for me to believe his hero. Maybe Rogen's up for it? I don't know. Maybe he's enrolled in the "300" training camp (weird visual there) months before shooting? Could happen, I suppose.
I just hope Gondry and Rogen take Green Lantern seriously. This shouldn't be a "funny superhero" film. It should roll by funny moments, obviously, but not too often. Knowing almost nothing about Green Lantern, I'd like to see the character come alive not as a Sandler-ized farce, but as someone I sympathize with and root for as the shit hits the fan. This is always the best kind of superhero film.
But we'll see. I really have no idea what to expect.
