An Interesting Tidbit About The STAR TREK: ORIGINAL SERIES Season 2 Blu-Ray Set...

Published at:  Aug 10, 2009 9:26:24 AM CDT

Merrick here...

I can't stress how cool the STAR TREK: ORIGINAL SERIES Blu-Ray collections are. You can find my review of Season 1 HERE.

Season 2 of the series will be issued September 22, and there's something kinda nifty about it for hardcore TREK fans like myself.

Since many readers wrote in to echo my masturbatory exaltation of the TOS Season 1 Blu-Ray set, I thought this heads up about the second season's issuance might be in order.

The Blu-Ray Blog noted that the forthcoming Season 2 set will feature a disk almost exclusively devoted to Tribbles:

Special Features:
The Trouble With Tribbles preview trailer
More Tribbles, More Troubles Episode From Star Trek®: The Animated Series (HD)
Audio Commentary by David Gerrold
Trials And Tribble-ations From Star Trek: Deep Space Nine® (HD)
Trials And Tribble-ations: Uniting Two Legends
Trials And Tribble-ations: An Historic Endeavor

Fair enough - as "The Trouble With Tribbles" is a part of this season.

HOWEVER, if you look at the above features carefully, you'll notice that we'll be getting a chance to see a Tribbles-centric episode of STAR TREK: THE ANIMATED SERIES in High Definition, as well as "Trials and Tribbleations" - the most excellent DEEP SPACE NINE retro episode incorporating the DS9 cast into the original series' "Trouble With Tribbles". This will also be in HD.

Essentially, this'll be the first time we'll see either THE ANIMATED SERIES or DEEP SPACE NINE in HD, and will serve as a preview that portends the probable HD release of both series somewhere down the road.

Find many more details about Season 2's release at the Blu-Ray blog HERE.

Season 2, complete with the Tribble jamboree, is now preorderable HERE.

is this episode going to be in HD, all the forrest gump like effects work, transporter fx, and exterior ship fx were all rendered for 480i, it would take too much $$$ to track down all the original elements and rebuild the episode from scratch

    by jettl93

Bill Hunt at thedigitalbits has confirmed its simply an upconverted version of the standard video master...meaning yes it will look better then whats on TV and DVD but it in no way should be considered High definition, the animated series episode, however, will be in HD as it's masters are on film and not video like DS9 isI suggest an update perhaps Merrick before people get confused

    TNG Bluray is far off

    by jettl93

The show was edited on video with a native resolution of 480i, in order to make a true 1080p high definition transfer they would have to go back to the original film negatives for each episode and re-edit every single pice of footage back to how it was originally edited 20 years ago, not to mention the issue with special effects shots that where filmed right from the begining at 480i (it's the same as why we didn't get star trek TMP directors cut)editing and storing on Video was cheap back in the 80's so TV studios jumped at the chance to use it but it seriously fucks up the chance of getting HD transfer of alot of shows, TNG, DS9 and Voyager all suffererd from this, which means the chance of seeing them on Blu is doubtful unless Paramount is willing to pump million of dollars into reconstruction each episode..which i doubt they do

And I say 'Bullshit' right back; his self-serving, non-apology in the book he wrote strains credulity. It was basically, "Of course, I had read Heinlein as a kid; I'm sure I read Rolling Stones at some point; I remember all about flat cats... But I must have just forgotten all about it in the long years since." I could buy this if it came from a 60-year-old writer, but not from a 22-year-old avowed sci-fi fan trying to make his first TV script sale. Let's not forget that two other Gerrold pitches were tossed immediately for being taken whole cloth from other popular authors' stories... And also please note that such a stink raised up over 'Tribbles' once it was in production that Heinlein was eventually asked to sign off on the use of his 'flat cats' concept. Being a n ice guy (and not wanting to kill some poor kid's career before it started), Heinlein gave Gerrold a freebie.

    NOT TRUE HD!

    by revenge_of_fett

The Digital Bits has confirmed that the DS9 episode is a 480p upconvert. Since every ST show after the animated series was edited and had the effects created in 480p standard definition (Except Enterprise of course since it was shot in HD). The only way to get those shows in HD is to completely re-edit the original film elements and redo the special effects. That's a HUGE job and isn't likely to happen anytime soon.

I hate to be that guy, but the effects of the original series always took me out of the story. The remastered episodes are perfect, in my mind. I do think the effects could be better (TNG effects are, at times), but this show is awesome and I see a lot of the appeal that made people so crazy about it in the first place. If you're going to have two Trek series at the same time

    by nem_wan

DS9 was always the "other" Trek and it should be remembered in that context. It started while TNG was on and ended while Voyager was on. It had to contrast itself some way and being darker let it tell stories and explore arcs the other, more episodic and formulaic Treks couldn't get into. When DS9 was weak it was because it was trying (or being forced) to be LESS different, particularly during the brief time it was the only Trek on the air. If nothing else DS9 proves how popular Star Trek was in the 90s. Two TV series and a movie series at the same time. Any other franchise pull that off?

    Simultaneous Trek shows...

    by chief joseph

...was what killed Trek, IMHO.Too much supply and not enough demand. TNG was planting the seeds for their second spinoff (Voyager) already in their last season... The Maquis, Native American planet, etc. I remember when Next Generation ended, we still had Deep Space Nine running, Generations was coming out, and Voyager had already been cast and was being shot. (I remember recognizing "Tuvok" on the Enterprise-B bridge. That's what I call overkill. Berman & Braga must've thought they were the next Norman Lear with all their damn spinoffs.
They had all this Trek on TV and then expected people to pay to see those (mostly awful) TNG movies?
I was a pretty big fan of Trek and even I was getting tired of it once that "Warp 10 salamanders" episode of Voyager aired. I never even watched one episode of Enterprise. I do plan on watching JJ Trek once it hits DVD, though.

Thanks, I'll have to check that out. I watched one fan film a couple of years ago and wasn't that impressed. Something to do with Commodore Decker and a time warp. First of all, the story was VERY GEEKY; if you aren't thoroughly versed in Classic Trek, you probably wouldn't get it. Second... I wasn't able to accept those other actors as Kirk, Spock, etc. I wish these fan films would take place on a different Constitution-class starship with new characters-- I would probably really dig them if they did that.

    by gabba-uk

They were all filmed on video tape at 480i, not film. It's not a question of money, time or effort. It's simply impossible to create HD versions of them. The absolute best you can get out of them is digitally remastered interier shots to 480p and redo all the sfx to 1080p. But what's the point in that? Part of the joy if the BD TOS is seeing Kirk, Spook and McCoy and the original sets in such glorious detail. I'll be sticking to upscaled DVD for the newer Treks.

    by zod_

TNG can be made to be HD. If they kept the original film, they restore, recut, and redo the special effects (same as they did to the original trek). While the episodes were cut and edited onto video tape, it was filmed on film. It's an expensive process. I'm not sure if ds9/voyager did the same thing. I'd like to see ds9 on bluray.... only a handful of voyager eps worth rewatching though.

Re-Editing From Film That Big A Job?

    by autodidact

I always thought most of the work in film editing was the decision making. If the precise cuts are already there to work from, so long as the reels are in good condition and well organized it should be a fairly straightforward process. The effects on the other hand are a bigger problem, as I understand many of them were created on video and not on film like the main footage was.

The Tribbles are now CGI for the restored version.

    Animated series, yes

    by awardgiver

had original writers contributing, and Larry Niven, and Walter Koenig (the only original cast member not to come back. I was surprised at how good it was. Even with the iffy Filmation animation, it went deeper than any of the original series could with subjects.

This was all in the DVD version

    by gulducati

All of these extras were already included in the DVD version of season 2 enhanced Trek. The 2 special documentaries were originally created for the DS9 season 5 set, most definitely not in HD.

    NOT True HD

    by gulducati

UPDATE: Bill Hunt at The Digital Bits has confirmed with CBS/Paramount that “this is merely a 1080p upconvert from the original 480 digital master - not a full HD rebuild, a la TOS Remastered”

    DS9 is fantastic!

    by zodnotgod

cheyne_stoking_DMS needs to shut its fucking mouth! DS9 is a fantastic show and Trek's last great moment as a television entity. I loved Abrams take so there's that. There's nothing more I hate than a non-fan who knows not a fucking thing about which they are speaking of.
Still not sure how TNG ever stayed on the air with that laughable, lousy first season.
