First Warners Sends CAPTAIN BLOOD Into Space, Now They're Kicking Robin Hood Into The Future!!

Published at:  Aug 07, 2009 1:07:59 PM CDT

Merrick here...
Last week we learned of Warner Bros' intent to set their CAPTAIN BLOOD remake in space (details HERE). Now comes word that the studio is angling towards an untitled Robin Hood project set in the future, directed by Nicolai Fuglsig and scripted by Jason Hall.

Few plot details have been revealed about the new Robin Hood, but it will be set in a dystopian London and center on a band of thieves whose activities restore hope to the city’s embattled population. Producers describe it as "a futuristic action adventure” that will be "both inspired by and pay homage to the legend of Robin Hood."

...reveals THR's Risky Business Blog HERE. You may've seen some of Fuglsig's commercial work:

The announcement of Fuglsig's project while Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe are generating their interpretation of the legend recalls 1991's duel between ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES (also a Warners project) and Fox's ROBIN HOOD. PRINCE OF THIEVES (HERE) made it to theaters starring Kevin Costner, while the Fox project (HERE) ended up as a TV movie starring Patrick Bergin - who looked a little like Freddy Mercury playing Robin.

    Robin Hood

I never got the Robin Hood fascination at all. A thief who makes others pay for the luxury of his pity, practicing charity with wealth which he did not own. I love a good underdog story but it's something that never connected with me.

robin hood stole from the rich. i.e. royalty. the people who were wealthy by getting their money from the work that the peasants did. robin hood gave the stolen goods to the peasants, who did all the work for the royals and never got paid for it. see? why have sympathy for royalty. they have never earned anything for themselves.

"Rocket Robin Hood" cannot be improved on ...

    by madcanada

... True, the makers often literally recycled stories and cels from the 60s Spider-Man cartoons, just replacing Spidey with RRH. But anyone who thinks they can improve on "Rocket Robin Hood" is very very wrong and headed for a fall. That show was awesome and perfect.

A friendly explanation of the legend for Omar B

    by turtle_z

The Robin Hood legend is about resistance against a corrupt government which taxes the poor to finance the ridiculous excesses of the ruling class. England's treasury is being diverted to financing the Crusades, so Prince John, along with other minor nobles who've been left in charge, take advantage of the poor to fund their own decadent lifestyle and plans to take control of England. Robin is a noble who turns his back on the corruption and scarifices everything he has, lands, title and power,to bring justice for the poor. He doesn't rob the rich so much as take back the money that shouldn't have been taken in the first place. Thats the point of Robin Hood.

generally speaking. just that the concept of robin hood is so cool, steal from the rich give to the poor, a noble bad ass band of outlaws. it's so classic and awesome, and to do it in a modern style era could be fantastic. most likely since it's a hollywood project and not someone's vision, it won't be awesome. but it could be cool.

As I recall, Bergin's Robin Hood was the better of the two..

    by the dark shite

With the exception of the super fucking cool Rickman.

But the trailer is annoying. Why do Americans call him ROBIN Hood, with the emphasis on ROBIN?

It's like "Hi, I'm DAVE Smith."

& Omar B, the Robin Hood story is something you also see throughout history (& possibly influenced/helped encourage some of it). It's linked to things like the Magna Carta (the first little step towards real modern democracy) & even things like the Amereican revolution.

It's people power, essentially. Sticking it to the man. Who doesn't like that?

    Robin Hood is a Communist

    by one_guy_from_andromeda_

"robin hood stole from the rich. i.e. royalty. the people who were wealthy by getting their money from the work that the peasants did. robin hood gave the stolen goods to the peasants, who did all the work for the royals and never got paid for it. see? why have sympathy for royalty. they have never earned anything for..." themselves. It's curious how Robin Hood's obviously communist ideas of distribution of wealth among the people resonates in apparently capitalistic societies...

    by royston lodge

Robin Hood wasn't fighting against the aristocracy, per se. He was fighting against a pretender to the throne, Prince John. The true king was off being awfully brave slaughtering muslims in the Holy Land, which we all know is far more important than governing your own nation and ensuring that your asshole little brother doesn't make a mess of the place.
Robin Hood was trying to keep the true king's honour alive, not enciting revolution against the system.
Of course, this means he conveniently didn't realize that the taxes being paid by the peasants were going to help pay for King Richard's holy quest overseas.
    Oops. Silly Robin!
