Why, yes, hello. It is, once again, Todd from Twitch here with another edition of International Eye Candy – our fortnightly grab bag of amusing goodies from around the globe – but before we are able to dive in to it I must present you with this cautionary message. Has everybody turned their phone off now? Good, then we shall begin.
And we begin with something stupid, frankly, albeit stupid in that gloriously 80s way that means 'cool'. Yes, that's Dolph Lundgren in the attached photo and, yes, he's playing the drums. The film is COMMAND PERFORMANCE, Dolph directed it, and in it he plays a biker turned rock drummer who must save the family of a prominent Russian politician from terrorists. And we now follow up stupidity with silliness, in this case the silliness of fully grown men dressing up in foam latex monster suits and stomping scale miniature cities in the name of entertainment. You bet, it's a proper old school kaiju film – nary a CGI effect to be found – coming from Tomoo Haraguchi, Japanese effects wizard whose work has graced the high brown (AIRDOLL) the cult (UZUMAKI) and the classic (GAMERA). His own contribution to the kaiju canon? Meet the DEATH KAPPA! It's everyone's favorite yokai turned bad! This one is still in production but there is an extended behind the scenes video that shows off the suit, the models and the man at work.

Why am I writing about the prequel movie to a popular Chinese television show that hardly anybody here will have ever heard of, let alone seen? Because TURNING GATE – from director Herman Yau, who helmed the cult classic EBOLA SYNDROME back in the day – marks a return to active production for the legendary Shaw Brothers! They're back, kids, and it looks like they're doing it right. This is a precursor to television series EU and they've tucked heavyweights like Francis Ng and Anthony Wong in the supporting cast.

You're going to be hearing more about Dave Green in the future, I guarantee you that. Why? Because the man is shooting a short film about vengeful roadkill right about now with Sam Raimi producing, that's why. And even before we get to that, you're going to hear about him because of MELT DOWN, a horror comedy set in a fridge. With fridge things. Really. The voice of the sandwich is David Cross. I think I'm in love.

Enjoyed that cell phone PSA up above? Here's some more for you, in the form of the full, complete trailer for Indonesian slasher MACABRE. Easily the most anticipated horror title out of Asia this year, MACABRE screened a rough cut at the recent PiFan festival in Korea, where it scooped a best actress award for its lead villain, and with the film rounding into completed form – before, no doubt, being hacked to bits by Indonesian censors with a savagery well beyond anything depicted on screen – the official trailer has finally arrived.

The first teaser featured simply a pajama-clad man in a blank room that soon filled with CGI cherubs seeping through the walls. And there's more of the same in this second trailer, only this time Hitoshi Matsumoto has added a fat man barking at dogs. All I know is I really want to see it.

Considered by many to be the best zombie film of recent years, [REC] tore up the box office in its native Spain before being slavishly remade in the US as QUARANTINE. And so what have the producers done? They've brought back the original directors and – if the promo materials are to be believed – gone all ALIENS with the sequel. Remember how ALIENS ramped up the action quotient from Ridley Scott's original? Same deal here. Remember how ALIENS ended up being one of the best sequels ever made? Here's hoping. The latest teaser kicks an awful lot of ass in a very short time.

Well, he's not really, but he is voicing a fake samurai movie that appears within another movie and has since been all bundled up as a clever – and quite convincing – bit of viral marketing. The real film is an indie comedy titled WHITE ON RICE which has been included here before. The fake one is titled AMBUSH AT BLOOD GATE TRAIL and I kind of wish it was real, too …

Fans of Asian horror are almost certainly aware of Thai production house GMM Tai Hub, though they may not know it by name. GMM have quietly become the purveyors of the very best horror films to come out of Asia, producing a consistently high quality – and consistently scary – slate of films over the past five or so years. The original SHUTTER, sterling ghost story DORM, and SHUTTER follow up ALONE are all GMM films. And then a couple years ago they assembled all of their core talent to create four part horror anthology PHOBIA. That proved every bit as good as the individual films and has now spawned a sequel, the five part PHOBIA 2, which feature solo films from the directorial duo behind SHUTTER and ALONE, reunites the DORM director with his star, features a segment from the hyper-kinetic director of BODY #19, plus the directorial debut of the producer who backed all of these films. And, yes, it looks just as good as its pedigree.

From the American Cold War to the Polish, we head now across the ocean for upcoming Polish animated short TERROR FROM OUTER SPACE! Propoganda inspired designs fused with very current 2D animation techniques, giant robots, glowing ooze and the promise of robot versus superhero hand to hand combat. What more can you ask for?

And, finally, we end in France, were director James Huth is putting the final buff and polish on his live action adaptation of classic French comic character LUCKY LUKE, a character who sprung – at least partially – from the same pen that gave birth to ASTERIX AND OBELIX. Luke has been brought to the big screen before in both animated and live action form, but with Jean Dujardin – of OSS 117 and 99 FRANCS fame - in the lead and as technically skilled a director as Huth at the helm, expectations are huge for this. And it looks like they've been met. The just released teaser could have been lifted straight from the pages of the books …

Remember, we had this convo about who we'd like to work with, and Conti said he'd work with Lohan bc she's so washed up. If he could squeeze a good performance out of her now, where she's at her lowest point, he'd get a lot of praise and recognition.

I loved the relationship in Planet Terror between Jeff Fahey and Michael Biehn. I thought that was spot on casting and brilliantly performed by both. I wouldn't say the film as a whole had heart and drama but it's a start.

And who's being harsh here? I had forgotten about the brother's relationship in Planet Terror. He did well there. What I meant was, his films could use some more of that. In the Machete talkback, someone mentioned how he likes watching RR's films, but something about them always leaves him cold. I thought about it, and what I realized is that RR doesn't always form a good, solid emotional connection between his characters and the audience. Sure, his movies are fun and look cool, but they often lack dramatic moments with real drama- not fake, constructed drama bc the movie demands it, like in other moments of Planet Terror or his other films. His movies could use moments where we the audience actually feel for the characters and terrible situations they are in. If the characters aren't solid and don't feel anything, we won't either.

But in the previous Twitch I mentioned that I saw RR improving while I can not say the same about QT. At least RR is making a movie where he tries to say something. Sure Machete is ridiculous and over the top, but it is also about the immigration problem in this country. I admire when filmmakers tackle real world problems, even in a ridiculous context.
QT just makes films about what movies he has seen and about him and his hipster friends. RR is maturing; QT is stagnant and even regressing. -
...that all B-movies require nudity. Even nudge-nudge, wink-wink, later day ironic B-movies. A B-movie without nudity is just a Sci-Fi channel "special event". And before you start in with the "masturbating nerds" comments, I get plenty of pleasant and enthusiastic nudity at home...I'm just a stickler for tradition.

Or James Roosevelt, eldest son of Frankiln Roosevelt and member of the United States Marine Corps 2nd Raider Battalion.For those that don't know the 2nd Raider was the first "special operation/commando" unit in WW2. Later on Roosevelt went on to command 4th Raider. Young Mr. Roosevelt was also involved in the very early days of the OSS when it was still called the Office for the Coordinator of Information. He also worked as a producer for Samuel Goldwyn.

I tried it again tonight at a friend's house, and for some reason, the larger file did not appear larger as it should have.
Either way, here's the link. Its not great, but goofy and fun. No one in Student Television was an actor, we shot some sequences- shot and reverse shot- months apart bc of missing props or actors. I think the total time from the first shot to the final edit was 6 or 7 months, mainly bc chainsaws and hedge-clippers weren't always available on weekends we needed to shoot. Anyway, I've blabbed enough about it. You can find 3 of my cameos in A. the crazy old lady at the tree farm who kicks Vernon down but never reappears (due to an edited sequence), B. the crime scene photographer, and C. one of the carolers killed at the end.

There is a juicy HE-MAN movie rumor going around on the web right now. And no, it isn't about the upcoming HE-MAN movie slated for 2011, but the old 1987 movie (with Dolph Lundgren and a very young Courtney Cox). Apparently, there is talk that the original MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE movie is going to get a Special Edition DVD with updated visuals and special effects to help it tie better with the new movie.
It's being said that matte shots used in the movie of (an unrecognizable to kids) Castle Grayskull are going to be updated with CGI to look more like the classic castle from the toyline, and a brand new shot of an unseen Snake Mountain will be added to the film (...in the film, a scene was shot that took place in Snake Mountain in a control room where the villians view Earth. Due to budget problems, the matte shot was never added so most audiences thought the scene took place in Grayskull...) Anyways, if this rumor is true, it will be interesting to see where this goes. I for one am interested in revisting this classic superhero movie again. Dolph was a great He-Man, and Frank Langella was awesome as Skeletor! (let's hope they use his voice as Skeletor in the new movie!) -

Anybody watched the Filmation Flash Gordon? Possibly Filmation's finest hour. It's really good! Of course, so's Star Trek: The Animated Series. Something I think even non-Star Trek fans could enjoy.

hahha,.... no, my understanding is they plan on doing something like "Star Trek: Remastered" to the Dolph Lundgren He-Man film. The are inserting new shots of Grayskull and Snake Mountain, which will be similar to the toons. They won't be giving Langella's Skeletor a floating head or anything like that, but they may throw in a few easter eggs by showing original characters in cameos (ie: Fisto, Zodac, Tri-Klops) in a few of the exterior battle shots at the beginning and towards the end of the film (replacing generic soldiers pushing prisoners around).

I was so skeptical about that when they announced it, visions of George Lucas-style shenanigans dancing (and breaking the 4th wall) in my head. But damn, they did a great job with it. I could see where He-Man could benefit from a similar treatment. The cameos, I think, might be a bit tougher to pull off.

Awww but the new look of the old Star Trek is stunning. However, I'm not too keen on remakes, reimaginings, whatever, bringing in actors from the original film or tv show. I'd say they've maintained a good bit of shonk. Most important, to me, they kept the LOOK. I haven't seen all of the remastered eps yet, but on the ones I've seen, they worked with a pretty light touch.
I went in with a worst-case kind of skepticism, and was shocked at what a good job they did. -

I've gotta say, I respect that. There's a lot to be said for decisive action when it looks like the situation calls for it. I learned a long time ago what happens when you hold back a bit for fear of overreacting, and it ain't pretty. 12 years later when a similar situation cropped up, I put this knowledge to the test, and the results were much more livable.
Point out the line, and if it's crossed, don't hold back a goddamn thing. Sounds harsh, but what else can ya do?

Scott wrote this "Appraisal" of John Hughes, basically saying Hughes was the Godard of the 80's (a claim I think is bordering on ludicrous, no offense at all to John Hughes), mostly due to Anna Karina and Molly Ringwald. He then illustrates his point by bringing up "Masculin Feminin", which he calls a vehicle for Karina. When it's one of the only early Godard films NOT to have Karina. All so he can quote the "children of Marx and Coca Cola" thing as opposed to Hughes' "children of Ronald Reagan and New Coke. I mean, how hard can it be for a Professional Film Critic to not get that wrong?

really good. started off really slow. boring teen thriller set up. but it played with the cliques really well. (small spoilers) the mysterious guy who leads you down the evil path. is the first to get fucked up. the constant swiching of who is the hero. the nerd? the surfer? the eventual surviors/survior, the least likely conventionally. and it is all driven by the characters. and with very few gimmicks. solid thriller.

And say there are "rules" in fighting. I agree, if something happens you have to be able to respond and in ways the other person will never guess or expect, but I also think there are lines that can't be crossed. I believe in certain ideas of morality, even in a fight.
Call me naive or old fashion, but duplicating the tactics and behaviors of people i abhor - gangbangers, terrorist, dictators, ect. - isn't something I think that should be emulated.

Probably because I got in a similar discussion with some guys last night at a party.
They were a bunch of guys who are training to be MMA fighters (one was really cool and he is an ex-Marine) and I got along with them, but one of them was just a tongue cleaner who was talking shit and stuff. I'm like "when did fucking might equal right."
And the guy was cocky as hell, I'm not a pro fighter, but I have boxed and studied martial arts and I am a hell of a lot bigger then this guy (he is like 5'8, 150lbs - I'm like 6'2", 225lbs). Even his friends were like "dude, this guy is big. Why are you fucking with him?"
BTW - the ex-Marine kid was the coolest. He has had a couple of amateur fights, and watched him shadow box and throw some punches and could tell he has good foot work and hand speed/power. The best part is he is baby faced as hell and always has guys try and get in fights with him because he looks like a pretty boy blond rich white kid (he even lives in the OC). He usually walks away, but his gf was telling me he sometimes surprises some gangbanger or hoodlum wannabes.

I got out voted. We watch a movie together once or twice a week that's chosen by votes. Since the weather has been fucking horrible here, its raining like Noah is making a comeback, we've upped the movie watching. We've been using movies as platform for talks about moral and ethical decisions and use them as training discussions. Because I got out voted I tried to watch the movie as open minded as possible to see the greatness I've missed in the past. The surreal part of the whole deal was sitting in a room with people that are trained in amphibious operations that have never engaged in a "classic" amphibious assault critiquing the opening sequence.

Watched Peggy Sue Got Married the other night, at my bf's request. Hadn't seen it since I was a kid. And man, does that movie suck.
Apparently when it came out, people were bitching about Cage, when he is BY FAR the best thing about the movie (physics guy is ok too). I can only assume Coppola needed a paycheck. -
Jim Carrey cutting up lines of coke at the reunion was pretty good too.
There's a lot that's OK about the movie, but added all together, it is just not good. And the end bit about the strudel was really annoying. -

As this movie held my attention during the flight back, while Duplicity made me want to stab my eyeballs out on the way there. Mainly due to the fact that when you are on a plane you really don't want to watch anything of substance, just something dumb. Also nothing you really want to see. Ghost Of Girlfriends past was the perfect in flight movie. It was just dumb and pretty terrible at parts, there is a stretch of like 10-20 were is it ok but out side of that flash back scene is was one of the most cliche movies ever! There is this whole wedding and its just so lame. Also note that it is a complete fucking redo of Scrooge (not the story that Bill Murray movie), which yes is the fucking story. I finished the movie and feel asleep, when I got home to see what ass hats were involved with this movie I couldn't believe who wrote and directed this thing. So I am guessing the Hangover was a flop because those guys wrote this, Rebound and Four Christmas's all crap. And it was directed by the guy who did Mean Girls, Freeky Friday (which I caught 5 minutes of the other day?) and Spiderwick Chronicles. So there goes my theory that it was just some hacks. Its disappointing that the director went after this money grab because he is obviously talented with special effects (and twin effects which came into play here), maybe that's why the movie was WATCHABLE considering the circumstances. But had I known who was involved with it before putting my headset into that crappy ass armrest jack I would have hated the whole thing.

Because most of them get things so wrong it makes me laugh. I realize a lot of the problems stem from having to make concessions to the camera and telling a story regardless of truthfulness or accuracy.

So all and all its was a pretty fucking amazing vacation/honeymoon. Went to Kauai, now we really want to see The Perfect Gateway. Need to read your review DV. Also David is one of my favorite directors.

Was Ratatouille which was really really good. Only my second time watching it, and I think its Pixar's most adult movie. Though we kept wondering why they kept trying to hammer home the point that he should not be stealing. Never went anywhere.

Terrible time to take a vacation movie wise. Fucking nothing came out in July not there are like 5 movies I have to see in theaters. Perfect Gateway, 500 Days of Summer, The Collector, GI Joe, The Hurtlocker. And up coming district 9. Luckily we didn't blow as much money as we thought we would.

I am still upset I wrote that movie. I took a character I made for "serious" detective stories, Ray Malory, and used him in a T&A flick. That still hurts because I think that is such an awesome name for a detective.
Of course, when I say "serious" detective story I mean a detective who gets a case that happens to involve vampires in it. -

The Forbidden Kingdom. It may have been the mood I was in, but I enjoyed it. Sure, the dopey white kid who learns martial arts in there, and completely unnecessary that they chose a dopey white kid...but the movie was quite enjoyable for me. Was it the ideal movie for Jackie and Jet to be in together? Fuck no. The Sentinel. Well, I have always liked Mikey Douglas, and of course I'm a 24 fan so I like Keifer..it was an okay movie...one that was worthwhile enough to pass the time with. What did really bother me was some of the stupid camera stylistic choices. Like when the sort of zoom in from the outside and zoom in through the white house and then back out. That shit I can't stand and think it's completely unneeded. MunichI think this is a very solid flick. I enjoy all the performances here, particularly Geoffrey Rush's small part. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but the second dude they blow up via the phone...his wife...was she in The Visitor?

I caught a couple of clips of it the past week, it showing on cable like non stop recently between FX and WGN. I had a TV in the bathroom at my hotel in Vegas (which is now on the must do list for my new home). So as I was having a morning dump I caught part of it, and it looked like made for TV crap or some movie from the early 90s. Between that and Ghost of Girlfriends Past....what the fuck did Catherine Zeta-Jones do to his career? He hasn't made a good film since they got married? Diandra Douglas?? Didn't realize that he was married through his sex addiction days? I guess a man can't really have a SEX ADDICTION unless you are married and someone is complaining.

Sure they are ok, but Will Arrenett doesn't try hard enough, Micheal Cera still owes me $10 for Year One even though I saw it for free, Portia De Rossie is actually funny on Better Of Ted, Jeffrey Tambor wouldn't mind seeing more of him actually. But there are much funnier people out their not getting work. And Jason Bateman is getting old and tired real quick.

I've had them on TIVO for a while and finally got around to watching it, glad I did.Sons Of Anarchy not sold on it yet not really flipping my switch through 5 episodes.

Peggy Bundy is the best part about that show. Ron Pearlman is also great, but I'm not sold on Austrailla's answer to Heath Ledger. But seeing Henry Rollins in the previews gets me excited. It does get better in the later episodes. A lot better then the crap that Rescue Me has been this season.

Though I think I knew that because his review is on the poster. I'm starting to see why he is the gold standard of movie critics. First off you never know what he is going to like or hate, he isn't always with the popular crowd. Secondly he is a pervert and a sci fi nerd (like every wanna be film maker). I am reading something from the AV Club and its obviously clear why Ebert is so great. While Ebert doesn't have comment sections I feel like if he did he may chime in from time to time. But the AV club does and I don't see the point, all there things are always LONG AS SHIT and never really that funny. They try to hard to be funny. I like their stuff, but Eberts ready for print short reviews are just more pleasing and can be funny as hell. He'll probably write something next week that makes me hate him but for now I like his style.

And as a kid from the midwest Siskel and Ebert probably played a bigger impact on my love of movies, including classic, foreign, independent and obscure, than any teacher or professor ever did (and this was way before the internet). When you live in a blue collar neighborhood you are not gonna hear about Matewan and The Bicycle Thief from your classmates and neighbors.
He also wrote Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, and all of us big boob fans will forever be grateful to him. -

A very good story in the vein of E.T. It would make a great animated film, like Iron Giant. Iron West is fun but could use a little extra bit of explanation for its conclusion to make sense. Still, a cool mix of genres. An outlaw fighting alongside Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster against alien robot cowboys? Awesome.

Moonwalker last night. If you haven't seen that in awhile, I highly recommend watching it again. Pesci's syringe brandishing and hair are outstanding. I had forgotten a lot of the stuff in this movie. Taken as a metaphor for MJ's career, it's kind of brilliant. The Jackson 5 stuff is tough to watch in a way because on the one hand, it's sort of the best thing ever. And then you remember what went into getting it so good. And sort of want to cry.
Today I watched Amateur. Which was great. Virgin ex-nun who thinks she's a nymphomaniac and amnesiac pornographer join together with the pretty porn star who hates him and whom he can't remember and they try not to get killed. A bit slow, very deadpan and sorta sad, as to be expected from Hal Hartley (especially 90's Hal Hartley). His movies crack me up.
About to watch Arena. The Agony and the Ecstasy of Phil Spector. Which I was glad to find, as it means I can go back to bitching about how underrated and overlooked Lee Hazlewood was. The wall of sound is fucking great, of course. But Lee gets the most beautiful and perfect echo that I've ever heard. Ever. It's like velvet. It even sounds amazing coming out of my shitty built-in laptop speakers. -

if you have not already, you must read the Elephantmen/Hip Flask comics. Sci-fi noir w/ animal hybrids genetically engineered and brainwashed to be perfect killing machines, trying to make it in the big city. That is not a good description, but still. It is probably my favorite comic right now. The artwork is amazing, and it will give you weird dreams.

I grabbed it when Criterion released it last year. I was attracted to it bc A. Its Kurosawa and B. The cover art was just gorgeous, in my opinion. It was to be my first "contemporary" Kurosawa film (read: not samurai) and I fucking loved it. High and Low was pretty damned awesome and suspenseful. There's a particular moment where I think Kingo and a detective, after they've gotten the kid back but are investigating the kidnapper, are looking around a suspicious shack on a hill. In one camera shot, the two men and the kid are walking and talking, and since we're concerned with what they're saying, we don't know that the kid has disappeared. Their realization that the kid is missing comes as such a shock to the viewer, its as effective as a stupid jump-scare from a traditional horror film, but actually moreso bc it was done without conspicuously setting up tension (through use of soundtrack or stereotypical moments) and bc we care about the characters and we too, like the men, got careless for a moment and lost track of the child. Its like a shock of adrenaline- "oh shit! they just got the kid back and now they lost him again!" Course, I dunno why Kingo and the kid were there. Maybe Kingo wasn't, but the kid was. Now that I think about it, that's kind of odd. Why would he... oh yeah that's right. The detectives wanted info from the kid about where he had been taken. Anyway, enough rambling. High and Low was fucking great. I was afraid I wouldn't be as into Kurosawa's contemporary films, but that movie put my fears to rest. So now I'm very much looking forward to Drunken Angel and Stray Dog. And Ikiru, which I got for my birthday in December but still haven't watched.

My favorite part is when they cut from the detectives and Tifune to this guy who is walking through the narrow streets and alley of the slums, until he finally comes to a cramped apartment and opens up his window, revealing a perfect view of Mifune's mansion overlooking him from the top of the hill. In one perfect sequence we have revealed that he is the kidnapper and his motivation for doing it - he has looked up with envy and spite at Mifune for God knows how long.
It is one of those truly cinematic moments that I find almost completely lacking in movies nowadays.
And watch Ikiru Vader. It is one of my favorite Kurasawa movies, and Shimura is fucking heartbreaking in it. His face is like a lovable muppet (and I mean that as a compliment). -

is usually a bad idea for me too, as trades involve spending more money at one time than I generally like to spend (comics, used books and the occasional movie ticket account for pretty much the only non-survival related funds that get spent in my cramped little home). And waiting for a used copy of the trade to pop up can mean a loooong wait.

1982 Phil Spector doc. Very entertaining, lots of interviews with people who admire his talent (and some who don't) but still kinda hate him, including the Ramones. Also includes a completely ridiculous Darlene Love video, some bits of cover versions of Spector songs from a KROQ dj's awesome record collection and, for some reason, an extended segment of trippy bi-plane footage.
Though, once again, they mention the Trey label and Lester Sill, but neglect to mention that Lee Hazlewood co-owned the label OR that Spector first stopped in to study up on Hazlewood's recording techniques. Alas. No love for Lee. -

was far more interesting. I think it pissed a few people off because they went in expecting wall to wall demonic possessions. That's what I was kind of expecting so I was pleased with emphasis being on the court case. It was a different angle for that sort of film.

I was going to discuss the issue with Danny about the 3rd act of 28 Days Later but we had already had a couple of discussions about it in the past and I really don't care about all that much.C'mon Cillian Murphy's character becomes Rambo out of nowhere when in the earlier movie he was almost useless? Sorry but that doesn't fly for me. thee is so much wrong with that 3rd act that it flat out negates the good things that came before. I will say though that 28 Days Later is fucking perfect compared to 28 Weeks Later. Good god was that whole movie shit.

Let's talk Kurosawa! I had to go out for my mom's birthday tonight. And my little bro is in town, and needs an air mattress. Which I was supposed to bring from my house when I went to dinner, but I forgot. So I had to drive all the way back across town to get the mattress, then take him to a Harris Teeter to get beer. Then I stole some music at my dad's house, where he's staying. Then I made it back home at 12:15. And forgot I had to work in the am. Damn. Least I got the Double Dog.

It gives us a couple of great things: A. Christopher Eccleston. B. The awesome music track that has become the 28 Days Later series' theme, "In a House, In a Heartbeat" C. Its got Jim going bugnuts psycho to save everyone. It makes sense to me. Finally, here at the end when confronted with real monsters is Jim able to become monstrous himself and save his friends. I love it. And when he plunges his thumbs into that one dude's eye sockets, its ohhhhh so very cathartic. But not so much in the sequel when Robert Carlyisle does the same thing to his hot Braveheart wife. Its SHIT in that movie. Which is mostly shit too, in my opinion.

Two questions:How did a bike messenger from London, who had been shown throughout the movie to be not much more then supercargo, who just woke from a Coma a few day before manage to survive in a countryside teeming with rage infected people; without any weapons, a shirt and shoes become John J. Rambo?How did Jim get across the mine field around the house? Two simple questions but quite illuminating.

How long was Jim out in the countryside? I got the impression it was only an hour or two at most. The countryside wasn't teaming with Infected- sure, the compound gets attacked from time to time, but I got the impression that the soldiers went beyond the gates quite often- as is evidenced by their piles of corpses. So, to me, it looked like he only had to survive a very short time. B. I forgot all about the minefield. But perhaps they didn't really bother burying the mines? For fear they might blow up some survivors? Surely the infected wouldn't recognize the mines as being dangerous and thus wouldn't feel the need to run around them. Also, I never got the impression that the entire compound was surrounded by fields. Perhaps Jim just ran up the same road the soldiers drove on. Good questions, though.

By one simple thing - Jim has a skill they don't.
The soldiers are trained to handle conflict. To fight. To use their weapons. And to operate as a team. When they get assaulted they suddenly act all crazy, like a contingency plan was never discussed.
But the entire assault on the house and the killing of the soldiers would have been believable to me if they said and showed one thing - Jim understands the infected better than the soldiers do. They've been blasting them from a distant, but you could explain ( both verbally and visually) that Jim has learned how to survive out there with them. He knows how they think and act.
WIth that simple piece of information, I could believe Jim could have led an assault on the house because he possess training and a weapon (infected) that the soldiers do not.
The land mine could have been explained to by showing Jim studying a map of them before he is escorted to get executed.
Just lazy in my opinion, and anti-establishment fantasy. -

But hey, I'm the common man. I want to see good triumph over evil every once in awhile, so I'm fine with seeing the common man defeat the lazy and contented slovenly military men. But, knowing that you guys ARE military men (and I'm sure I screwed that up, as you probably don't call yourselves a segment of the military, and thus I've exposed my ignorance once again), I can see why you'd have a problem with the end. But me, and the rest of the regular joes, I don't think would have a problem with seeing the hero overcome such an obstacle to save the day.

That Jim may have found a way to survive with the Infected. That's extremely interesting and would have created interesting sequel ideas- especially had Jim died in the end like the original plan. I still think Jim probably just ran up the driveway though. I mean, I doubt the soldiers removed the mines every time they drove out from the mansion.

And I love seeing people defeat superior enemies, including the military. I just like when I can believe it.
Like I said, he if they showed that he possessed a skill they didn't, I would totally by it.
My other problem was they should them as the "lazy and contented slovenly" military men. WTF? People in the military actually work; so were these guys putting up defenses.
The problem I had is they show them turning in a fascist or barbaric group so quickly - after 28 days the major is willing to have them go around raping women. Uh, a little to early to worry about reproducing i think.
Once again, a better scenario would be the soldiers pissed off that they have to guard Jim and the two girls - why are they busting their butts to help this pussy. And they could either mutiny or have the CO die, leading to the survival of the strongest philosophy taking over.
I think you can make the military the villains, just don't make them incompetent and out of character. -
I see the soldiers as being very human. You guys seem to suggest that soldiers, even after the world for all intents and purposes has ended, would still continue to act as soldiers, even though there is no real fear of punishment or retribution. The only reason they'd continue to act as soldiers is because of a respect for their leaders, a respect they clearly were able to easily toss away when one of their own had a different opinion. Remember, they tossed a commanding officer into the dungeon bc he didn't think it was right to do what they planned. But me, I believe in the breakdown of society, and that includes the breakdown of the functioning unit, even if that unit happens to be military. I fully believe the selfish desires of the individual would cause one to forego what he considers appropriate behavior, especially in such a situation as that. So its no big deal for me to see the soldiers get scared and start acting like normal, fearful people. I totally buy that.

But it was 28 days when Jim woke up. The time between that moment and when they reach the military is undefined. It could have been much longer. They did spend a lot of time at Brendan Gleeson's, I seem to recall.

It was that authority was the real villain. The soldier's represent authority. They don't represent the idea of people not getting along causes everyone's death (like in Night of the Living Dead) or how when man fights over material possessions we are doomed (like in Dawn of the Dead), it was that a group of people can establish rule and dictate living conditions to you -i.e government.
It was that old left-wing (and i am left of center probably) belief that we would just be better off without the military and authority figures. -

I meant, that's a common theme you find in every zombie film, that humanity is capable of far more horrific acts than the zombies themselves. As to your idea that the them was that authority was the villain, that's something I never considered. But I think I disagree. If that's the theme, I think they did a poor job of waiting until the 3rd act to introduce it. I've never really thought of what 28 Days Later's theme actually was. But if I had to give an answer now, without an in-depth thought process, I'd think its more along the lines of something like you can't beat the human spirit. The desire to survive and overcome hardships and adversity is too great.

1) Oh yes I believe that they can do horrible things. Just look at the poor Iraqi girl who was raped and murdered by members of the 101st (fucking asswipes ruining the rep of the 101st). But those things happen because of a BREAKDOWN in command and discipline, such as the My Lai massacre, and in the fact that the soldiers are in the field for a long time facing a foreign enemy. American troops rarely if ever team up to go out and rape a bunch of American women, they go out and rape the enemy. These were Brits planning to rape british women whom they even served food too.
IMO Doyle should have shown that these men looked at Jim and these women with disdain - that they were NOT one of them. Plus, they should have shown that these guys had thrown off any sort of discipline and were not following orders from a CO. I hate COs but rarely do rapes happen because the CO orders the men to go out and rape someone -they happen because the CO is ineffective and isn't able to establish control over his men. This guy is using the promise of rape as a mean of control...
2) I don't think that was the theme - authority is the enemy - I was just saying when you put soldiers out like that they became representatives of that idea. I don't think 28 days later had much of a theme to be honest. -
regular survivors, a bunch of soldiers who went AWOL (no CO, but that wouldn't explain how Jim killed them all) or a bunch of soldier wannabes (like the SUrvivalist here in the US). I would have a better time believing the ending then.

I totally agree that had the commander been a tougher son of a bitch with real morals, that maybe the platoon would have lasted longer without giving in to their baser instincts. However, once you have someone who is willing to let some of that shit fly, I fully believe the team would give in because, hey, the commander is doing it too. It becomes acceptable at that point. So now what we're arguing is, do we think its plausible that the commander would be someone so weak-willed? Someone who wants to please his soldiers so much, to keep them happy, that he'd allow them to rape women? Me? I buy it. Its the end of the world. He's got no one else to answer to, and he's human, just like the rest of us.

So I will say this before I leave: the problem Vader is that he had a tough sgt. Someone who could have helped him maintain discipline. And he was more than willing to kill Jim. To me, it just smacked of Boyle's distrust of the military.
Series: I want to hear about the Collector when I get back. It looks like a decent b-horror flick. -
I just said that I like Boyle movies better. Also that and I really haven't seen much of his new stuff save for The Departed. I like Taxi Driver and I thought Raging Bull was good (your explanation really did change it for me, because I never got why it was black and white). I will watch Mean Streets this week just for you! And I like Taxi Driver I'm pretty sure I watched it twice in a row when I saw it, I need to watch it again because its been a good ten years. I just think Taxi Driver is popular for the wrong reasons, why you like it isn't the main reason other people like it. Over all my favorite Marty film is probably the King of Comedy or Cape Fear. They are the ones I've seen the most.

We are hoping tonight. Con I am going to write a full review of The Collector for the Examiner tomorrow. It had a lot of SAW elements to it, but its a much better movie then Saw. But its not as cool as a concept as Saw 1 first was. Also it has some really cool slow mo effects editing. I really really liked it.

It just had such a visceral attack on me in the theaters I've tried to watch it again and I can't get into it and never make it past the first scene in the church. Also I liked 28 Weeks Later save for some of the idiotic early scenes that led to contamination.

5 pounds in Kauai. I haven't been in a gym in probably 2 years. A full gym anyway. I was huge into weight lifting then I just kind of gave up when I was able to bench 280. I would be cool to get back to that though, but I don't have two hours a day for that anymore.

There were a lot of strange, unorthodox electronic, independent songs on that soundtrack. And the best thing is, John Murphy's original music for the film fit so WELL with the songs that it was hard to tell just what was original and what was a pre-existing song. That Granddaddy song, however, was used again last year for a car commercial, I'm pretty sure.

Me, I didn't get a cell phone until something like 4 years ago. I sure as hell ain't don't talk enough to need one, but it's used as more of an "emergency". It is based on a famous story in Japan, and the story has been shot before (drawing a blank what the name of the other film was). But the movie didn't do that good at the BO so they never shot the fuckin' sequel.

If I remember the M&C book correctly it was the first book in the series and the enemy I think was a Spanish Privateer.The movie is actually parts of like three different books I believe but I haven't read the series in years so I very well could be wrong about that. M&C was one book and The Far Side of the World was another. Pillow you might be right considering the Mets were supposed to make some noise this season. M&C was the first book in the series and according to the sterling folks at wiki the book had very little to do with the movie. The biggest chunks of story come from the books The Far Side of the World and HMS Surprise.

there were so many interesting points in it. such as each person needing good drills and everyone working together. it kinda put on display reasons why the english dominated the world for so long.i went off and read the first book. there are a shit load. i'll get around to the others some day. its funny that in the book aubry was a short fat man and the first actor the producers thought of was ... russel crowe!the movie canibalised several books, and i've only read one. but the main book it was definitely not an american ship. it was a very 'full' book, there were several ships they captured. but one was not american. it is set during prenapoleonic french revolutionary wars.

I bought the directors cut on blu ray. Don't ask me why even though I did not care for it much, but I am a completest, and hoped the DC on TV would be a better moo-vee. Alas no. But that aint the story. The story is that I could not get the English audio to work on my PS3. It worked in French, and the special features worked in English, but not the movie. However, I accidentally hit the 1.5 speed button on the controller, and the English audio suddenly came on! Ok, I took the dvd back, got a new one...Same damn thing happened again! I called Sony, they thought I was crazy. I called Best Buy - they thought I was crazy and drunk. I talked to my dog - well he knows I am crazy, but even he was shaking his head. And I did not have anything to drink! I swear to the great Toadkiller in the sky. I am not making this up. So, I decided to watch the movie at 1.5 speed. The English was fine, it matched the mouth movements, and the only time the movie seemed weird was when people walked. The fights were faster too. But the really cool thing was the DC is 186 minutes, but watching at 1.5 speed, the movie was over in about two hours! Sweet! It was no better, but it was no worse. I recommend 1.5 speed for Watchmen!

You can't release a horror movie near Halloween because that is when Saw part ∞ comes out.
And it doesn't have to make that much cabbage because they are so damn cheap. Maybe 10-20 million tops to make which is low budget for Hollywood. -

With the help of my dad I collected them for a good 5 years maybe, I think I have close to 1000, they take up no space. They all fit into a shoe box I always forget what it is. Its a pretty sweet collection though its only of movies from like 97-02. Anyone else got some good movie memorabilia?

Actually all 4 of those movies are good. Milk is the best, and I enjoyed Body of Lies as well as Nazi Cruise. The Wrestler was ok, not some amazing film that everyone says it is. Like Marisa's character in that movie I felt had nothing to do, I didn't get the praise for her. And some of their scenes together felt so forced.

The more I hear about it, the more I really like the idea of a sci-fi romance film. The ideas are pretty intriguing. The commercials make it look awful, but the idea of someone traveling through time all his life, unable to control it, and the wife meeting various versions and ages of the husband at different times throughout HER life... well it all sounds pretty damn interesting.

why do scripts have this weird fucking format that makes a thirty page document into a hundred and twenty page document. I know people makes notes on the side ect, but it is fucking stupid. Is it because producers want to think that they are smart because they read all 120 pages or because writers want their short story sized document to look big. I'm just saying.

When its afternoon for you it late at night for me.

First you have to establish certain things because that way the people in respective departments can find out what they do. So:
INT. BAR - NIGHT
Tells the art department that it is an interior scene, what set to build (bar) and how the DP has to light it (it is going to be at night). Important production information. Dialogue is separate because you want the actors to be able to find their lines as quick as possible and be able to see them easily.
A lot of this stuff is cary-overs from the golden age of film where they had a assembly line mentality. You wanted people to be able to read a script, get it green lit right then and then have other people be able to read it and figure out what they had to do. If you are an actor cast as a cowboy in a WB movie and have 20 lines in two days, you better make sure he can find his lines and rehearse them as quick as possible.
Second big thing Chipps, a page of script roughly equals a minute on screen. So that formating is designed to also correlate into when a scene takes place on screen: page 60 on a script should land on the 60 minute mark in a movie, and so on. So a 120 page script should be a 120 minute movie (unless of course they cut stuff in the editing bay). -

When it comes to describing action, you only want a few lines of it, like, what's the rule (I forget), 5 lines at most. The reason is that, like here at AICN, a paragraph that small makes quick reading much easier. So if you keep the descriptions short, it'll be closer to a visual representation AND make it easier for someone to read it quickly (bc chances are, that person has 15 more scripts to read that day).

I always wanted to be a writer as a kid but I was not that great at it. My grammar just sucked (for some fucking reason I still have goddamn problem with to and too and their and there - I know the difference but when I am writing I always forget about it and seem to put the wrong one like a retard).
But with screen writing it is different. It is very much like architecture in a way; you are doing blue prints for a movie, not writing a book or story. Looking at the blue prints of a building is much different from looking at an concept art or a sketch of a building. That is how I see screenplays.
And another thing I like about screenplays is that they require you to be economic. In a book or short story you can spend 10 pages describing someone - that is all pointless filler in a screenplay. You are forced to be as lean as possible.

And broke rules constantly. His idea was he wanted to convey the fun and tone of his script to whomever was reading it, and he wasn't that bad of writer so he might have an idea there.
But IMO I have seen a lot of people try and imitate Tarantino's don't follow the rules styles and usually it means they don't understand movies and their ideas suck. It also suggest a laziness are there part not to do it properly. -
my real problem it this. i write a 60 page script that really is a 120 page script then i gotta reformat. since i wanna make the films myself it shouldn't really matter. honestly just the side spacing makes a huge difference. and the font size. just that alone i'm critising.

Is that there is only one of each. I haven't read their scripts for Crimson Tide or The Sixth Sense, but I bet they were far more "acceptable" than "Inglorious Basterds" and "The Village", at which point both filmmakers knew they'd get to make that story regardless, so they had no need to make their writing fit anyone else's standards but their own. But I guarantee you, starting out, their screenplays went by the book, page by page, with maybe a little flair to be distinguishable.

When you write softcore always capitalize the sound effects during a sex scene. So it should read:

zurtha showed me a bit. but really i find i need to get it write for my own head space, to make the story flow for me. it is simple to go back and mimic the format of others, so that's what i do. on the first run through that takes me out of my head space. but really, it is simple to re-arrange it so it fits that format, once the hard part is done.

I can't say I've got any moral qualms that would keep me from it- only professional ones (I'm sure once pple found out I worked in porn, my films wouldn't sell. But then again, look a Currently, I have a friend who says he's met someone who's willing to put up 1.5 million or less for a horror film. And thus, I am furiously writing away. chipps, just look at what you are writing as a treatment

Everyone basically writes those. So when you are done with your treatment you can just go ahead and start writing it in script form.
The good thing about writing a treatment is it helps you get your story out of your head, and when you are putting it in script form it helps you see where the flaws are. If you know that your first act is supposed to be 30 pages but your first big Plot Point (or Inciting Incident or Event or whatever term you want to use) doesn't happen until page 50, you know it is probably a slow fucking movie and you can make adjustments. -
Then you need to trim about 70 pages. And you might be formatting it wrong. (I just read a script by a friend of a friend recently and sheesh... the person didn't follow any of the "rules", if he knew any of them).

I originally was an intern/PA at Concorde/New Horizons (Roger Corman's old studios) and from there I followed a Producer over to work with another guy on some shows Corman was co-producing. It was the mid-to-late 90s, so Softcore was still pretty big (with cable and video rentals, and the fact porn hadn't taken over yet).
And I would tell your friend not to get into porn for one big reason - no money. Porn is dying and no one is making any money in it anymore except for a couple of big names (and they are not making as much as they used to). To demand for porn has reached it max but to many people are jumping in and trying to get some of the market, basically eating away at other people's shares. Add the internet, with free sites and piracy, and you can see how they are hurting.
I had a friend who was a porn distributor and he told me how porn was doing. Imagine that porn was a pie, the pie itself isn't getting any bigger but the slices are getting smaller. -

In the mid-90's, I was but a mere teen. I still remember the first night I got a taste of Skinemax. I was 11 or 12 and was at a sleepover at a friend's house. We stayed up all night and ended up on Cinemax watching softcore porn, which was apparently new to both of us. Thus, I always preferred softcore (the acting seems much better), but I figured real porn still made more money. For you to suggest that softcore was once on top of the market kind of blows my mind (no pun intended). That's too bad that porn is "getting smaller". No room for any Jack Horners to really make money anymore, huh? Not when you can watch your neighbor's amateur vid for free, I guess.

In terms of amount of money it was making (I doubt it). But it had it's own niche market that was pretty big. Blockbuster, Hollywood Video wouldn't show XXX movies but they would have softcore, and Cinemax and Showtime would show softcore movies so you had a sizeable audience for it.
And back then it was a "golden age" for softcore companies. Besides Corman, you had Alain Siritzky Productions, Magic Hour, PM, Ministry of Fear and a bunch of other companies back then.
I will say this, I preferred Softcore to hard core (I have worked on two porn "movies"). Despite the cheesiness and the sex elements, softcore movies were "real" movies. You had a film crew, a full production unit, and a time schedule and a script. It was run just like a big movie but with a smaller budget and scale. Hardcore felt nothing like a real movie, it was obviously bare bones and operated by people who could care less about filmmaking. You didn't learn anything about movie making (plus, porn is nothing like a movie so I never had any interest in working in it; I mean, who gives a fuck about plot or mise-en-scene in a porn movie?).
Softcore was actually a pretty good teacher for working on movies and TV shows. I know a lot of people who went on to work in movies, reality shows, television series and such who worked on those shows with me. ANd you had a grueling schedule so it was a definite sink or swim thing. I worked on two series, back to back, and we shot 7 movies a series, 6 day shoots for each movie. When I started I was a PA, but the end of it I was an editor (after being Post-Production Coordinator and Assistant Editor) for 3 of the movies and was being groomed to be the new Post-Production Supervisor and offered to write some of the scripts and be a second unit director. It was better than any film school (I imagine). -

My spidey-sense was tingling again the other day and I have been meaning to ask you about this thing that popped up. I was talking to this Tongue Cleaner, and he was talking all Alpha Male shit about how much of a badass he was with a gun and for some reason we started talking about the El Presidente Drill. I was honest and told him I don't know my score but I am pretty sure it would suck (I don't think I ever could hit every target with 12 shots even at my best, and I am slow as fucking molasses). It is possible to take out three targets in a El presidente or an El Presidente style drill provided you are a rare individual who practices a lot or are a professional competition shooter.Men and Women involved in competitive shooting like IPSIC and the like usually can pull it off, but can the casual shooter? you know the guy that goes out a few times a year and runs a couple boxes of rounds through his sidearm? maybe but probably not, it's more like luck in that case.

The guy who develped the el presidente drill was a writer named Elmer Keith I think. If he didn't come up witht he ideas then he was a n early proponent of that style of training. Anyways, there are documented episodes of him and his cronies taking out multiple targets in three seconds. Again, though, those guys all they did was shoot, hunt and write about it, lucky motherfuckers.

I bet somewhere on youtube is a clip from the Miami Vice TV show. It has a pro shooter, I forget his name, that draws his sidearm, aquires three or four targets and scores significant hits all in under three seconds.Of course they didn't actually kill anybody but the draw, the target aquistion, fire control are all realistic. He just didn't load the mag with live rounds and go hot. The scenario was based on a shootut the FBI was involved in the 80's around the Miami area where I think a half dozen agents were killed. The suspect in that case drew his weapon and fired terminal shots into three or four Agents in under 2.5 seconds. Both the Army and Marine Corps/Navy use/have used that clip in CQB training, So do some civilian police agencys.Sorry for beating this into the ground. Its one of the very subjects around here that I can talk about and not come off as a complete and utter dumbass.

It was ok. I fucking hate Zooey Dayshanel, but this was the least irritating she's been. The movie succeeds on the strength of 3rd Rock's performance. Also it is a movie more for guys then girls, like the script could only have been written by a dude. My wife said that 3rd Rock really is starting to look like Heath Ledger as well. I'd say overall a good rom com, its like Garden State and Eternal Sunshine but not as quirky and funnier.

I would learn the formatting sooner than later. When you finally write something that is great you don't want some reader to discard it as soon as he gets it. About 100,000 scripts get sent to studios each year (at least) and readers have to read thousands a year; they are looking for excuses to dump them into the pass pile.
As for when you are down, I don't really know. You can send them out to producers, but most won't read a script unless an agent is attached. One thing I would do if I were you is get it registered with the WGA, that way you and the person reading it have some legal protection.
You might want to try submitting them into writing competitions - I have never tried those but they might be like film festivals and get you some attention. I don't know though. -
You might be asking the wrong guy. I am the worse procrastinator there is. I sometimes think I should follow Kung Fu's old advice and walk away from here because I notice sometimes I am typing here instead of my own projects.
But the two best pieces of writing advice I ever heard (and don't listen to) is:
A) You have to treat writing like weight-lifting and exercising and do it every day. You can't bench press 300lbs overnight, and you won't be a good writer unless you write everyday. The thing is after awhile it becomes hard to skip a day of writing, just like if you work out consistently for a couple of months you start freaking out if you are missing a day of exercise. Human beings are creatures of habit, figure a way to make writing part of your habit.
B) To qoute Michael Jordan, anyone can eat an elephant, it just takes 10,000 bites. That being don't think you have to get everything at once. What kills a lot of writers is that they see the big picture (120 perfect pages) versus the small goal of just getting the next couple of pages done.
John Milius has a thing were he sits down and forces himself to write 4 pages a day - if it takes him 30 minutes great; if it takes him 8 hours tough shit. But the thing is he forces himself to get 4 pages done each day (or 8 if he is just rewriting) and the reward is that the sooner he gets it done the sooner he can get on to something else. And by just making it 4 pages it is an easy goal so he doesn't feel overburdened. -
Most of my offbeat discussions start off with movie talk. I just have a bunch of pet peeves in movies, and fist fights and guns are two of them. So usually it springs from that and then just leads in weird directions.

I would say Hollywood should base the Punisher on him except that he isn't a Marine (and I think Frank Castle has to be a Marine). -
I have worked on other features (I don't use the word porn for most of my stuff; porn usually implies hardcore and I was in a much more flaccid genre). I've worked on a bunch of b-movies and independent features, and a couple of bigger budget movie but just below-the-line crew.
I do have a couple of scripts optioned, but nothing has been made. I am pretty much just someone who makes a living in the film business, nothing special and definitely not a big shot. -

I always heard before the 18X program they required at least 5 years of service and you had to be available for at least another 4 years of service. But I could be wrong. I do know you are right about having the Ranger Tab or some other useful skills. But my knowledge of that is probably way less than yours.
I just kind of now how they operate now. And even that is just stuff I read on the internet or in books (hardly firsthand knowledge or experience). -

I was in a Ranger Batt.No big reason really why I join the Marines. I just decided to do something different. After I got out of the Army I went to college and fucking hated every single minute of it so I took a huge class load to get out as fast as I could. As graduation neared I couldn't figure out what I wanted to do so I said fuck it went down to the recruiter with my niffty DD214 and enlisted in the Marine Corps. I figured I liked the water and the uniforms were neato. Plus I'm pretty useless except for doing this junk.

I enjoyed the heckoutta it, I thought that they made this a damned sight better than it hadda right to be, and it was WAY better than Cloverfield, thank you. This guy can, you know, actually DIRECT a movie, which was something that seemed to evade the Other shakey-cam flick in question.
The lead guy--I kept watching him and thinking-he's channelling Basil Fawlty. He had the same snidely whiplash mustache, same manic hyped up manner, same sideys and a Fookin' accent. John Cleese never ran around from a pack of wild Nigerians (that I'm aware of) but there ya be.

The CNN type bookend format wasn't bad, keeps your interest. Liked the shootouts. Liked the Zapguns. Liked seeing the nazi type guy wind up getting the Braveheart treatment. All of that's good.
What's NOT so good? Well---the over-obvious Fugitive plotline, that got old quick. Not having the 1.8M Prawns escape on the ship (beam me up Chris) was Not expected, instead it was just dad and Jr. You DO expect an Alien-nation revolt, instead you just have the Professor from Gilligan and his kid escaping w/ the help of Basil Fawlty Jr. there. That's kinda it.
I liked it, please understand, but you DO need to dial back yer expectations somewhat.
I take it Nigerians are treated over in Africa like, hmmmm, Mexicans are by the Lou Dobbs types here and Turks in Europe. Not good. Well handled, though.

Valkyrie - a lot better than I expected. I was pretty annoyed in the beginning that they just didn't have the whole fucking movie in German, but I had to let it slide. Once I did, I enjoyed the film quite a bit.The Wrestler - I think this was a good film, but that's it. It was interesting and all, but in reality, I never 'connected' with the Ram. Body of Lies - I thought this was a decent flick too. Crowe's part could have been played by anybody, but I thought Leonardo was solid in this. I was a bit disappointed that they copped out at the end and the cavalry arrived.Alas, due to unforeseen circumstances, I didn't get to Milk, which kind of sucks.

I wish GI Joe was making more money. Its kind of funny, it cost 175 million and has yet to break even after two weeks. District 9 which looks like it cost about the same, only cost 30 million, and its already starting to make a profit. I'd much rather see the continuation of GI Joe then fucking Transformers 3..... Though I am proud to say I did not see Transformers 2 in theaters. I feel like addict breaking through. Though it not getting my money doesn't mean shit, I'm glad I didn't. Looked like the most generic movies ever. Like they were jokes of real movies. The trailers for Sorority Row (poor Rumer she got more Bruce then Demi), Couples Retreat (hahahahah that movie is directed by Ralphie Parker from A Christmas Story!), and Love Happens. Seriously even these titles sound like fake movies. Its pretty sad. Couples could MAYBE possibly funny, but I think all the funny scenes where in the trailer, though I do like the use of the British guy from Look Around You.

Contrary to what the Whedonite ball lickers claim, the best thing to happen to Firefly was that the show got canceled. It had 13 great episodes and they will always be great and their memory will never be diminished by a fall in quality.Serenity was good, I agree, it was entertaining as hell.

Watching Firefly on the DVDs never having heard of the show was pretty awesome. Though saying that it couldn't have lasted is kind of weak. While I've seen 0 Buffy or Angel episodes they both had good runs, and from I gather where very good. So I think Wheadon had the good to poop out at least 2 more good seasons of Firefly. Though if they had Serenity would have been moot. It was a good capstone to the whole thing.

That seen were Steve Zahn tells the kayakers about her meth addiction and they catch him in a lie, and he is like "That was a good story" then fucking kills him...THAT WAS FUCKING AWESOME! SPOILERS! Yeah during that BLUE scene I wish they had spent more time giving us a little more of Zahns back story rather then pointing out how clever they had been. If Towey gets to make a sequel to this, going off of how nutty Pitch Black 2 was I've got an idea. Zahn is actually some sort of immortal who must hunt for blood to stay alive, and make it an all out crazy hunting movie on the island. Like have the sequel start off with the heliocopter flying off and then Resident Evil turning around and killing everyone. Her getting back to Zahn and giving him blood, then there is a huge man hunt on the island for them.

Its a great moment, though, when you realize what/who she's talking about.

And just before they were to do the deed, he shows her the dog. She mentions the bf's name, and later during the BLUE scene, I think, or maybe later, she calls him by his name. Its a subtle way of connecting him with that earlier story (and you can see the pain in her eyes as she retells it), and makes Milla's arc more believable.

Best Corman movie to see in the Intruder with William Shatner playing basically a professional bigot: he goes to small towns and riles up the locals over racial incidents so he can cash in on them and get power. It is actually a great movie. -
From what I saw, it was no great movie, but nonetheless an earlier look at Bronson. I found it amusing that it had a mountain lion in a cage that took a swipe at some dude's back who was trying to get his payout from Chuck.

I wanted to see the 15 minutes. Mainly because we got two IMAX's in my state, and the one near me is one of those fucking museum ones that boggles my mind. So I wanted to get the tickets and use it as an excuse to hang out in the other city for the day...but its not fucking showing there. The whole Christmas Carol/Avatar showing at IMAX thing blows my mind. Why these two movies are going to be fighting for IMAX screens across the states is wrong. Especially Hannity, saying Pelosi and others are outright insulting real Americans by saying they are bringing swastikas and nazi paraphernalia to protests. "They dont look lik Nazis to me." And its at Discovery Place, which usually shows those typical IMAX documentaries, but in the past few years, starting with Batman Begins, started showing real films. They do not have a 3D projector though. The only one in town (that I know of) belongs to the Regal at Stonecrest. Its where I saw Beowulf and Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D. Unfortunately, I missed seeing UP there. May was way too busy and overloaded with movies.

It looks like the Avatar screenings were only being shown at AMC and Regal theaters across the country. And I hate how Regal has bought up a lot of the really *good* theaters in town and made them all corporate. One of the upscale theaters that showed retro films during the different seasons? Kiss that program goodbye. They also sold beer and wine and sushi? Well not anymore. Thanks a lot, asshats at Regal.

And was not impressed. Didn't do much for me. Same with UP, so much of that movie I thought was in 3-D lifted up my binoculars and found out that it was just damn good animation. I may not have IMAX but we have like a brand new world class theater less then a mile from my new house. They have two huge "Grand Auditorium" screens that are fucking awesome, with amazing sound. And the seats are comfortable as shit, they have a burger joint in the theater you can buy food and bring it in (but its expensive as shit), and they have balcony seating for 21 and older where they serve you food and drinks during the movie. And if you got during a matnee its only $12 to sit there. The other screens they have are also nice as shit as well. Like because of how awesome this theater is, it makes seening movies in any other theater near me a HUGE fucking let down. Even the other two nice theaters (the ones that used to be the best) suck in comparison.

Read this review of the Collector I found on IMDB. Its not very good, but its short: I saw this film yesterday with two of my friends.It was this or Funny People but I've lost faith in Adam Sandler since "You Don't Mess With the Zohan" And none of us wanted to watch Harry Potter so walking in to the The Collector it was fifty fifty that it was going to be any good considering it's from the writers of the last couple of Saw movies. But it was a great surprise at how great it was. The setup was quick the violence is gory and there was some scary disturbing moments plus the last couple of minutes were really intense. And this the killer in this movie puts Jigsaw,Jason,and Freddy to shame at least in my opinion.Plus this was way better than Transformers 2. Based on what they say in the first two sentences makes it sound like they just strolled up to the movies to see what was playing and this just happened to be it. WHO FUCKING DOES THAT? Who is still going to the theaters in hope that something good is showing? I mean besides every single fucking person in line in front of me all the time. Who just rolls up to a movie theater these days with NO IDEA whats showing and what time?

Here is a man who has huge gaps in his film knowledge writing reviews and doing interviews. I don't hold it against him because he is honest about his lack of knowledge and he is a good interviewer (at times and to a point).
I do hold it against AICN that a guy who is technically unqualified is your fucking best reporter? I mean, think about how shitty these other guys have to make Quint, a man who has yet to see Public Enemies, White Heat and has finally seen Rope, your most informative reviewer and interviewer.

He started working here at the site when he was about 15. I think he must have been friends with Harry and once Harry started getting "pwesents" and what not, Quint started going along doing interviews. I happen to think Quint is, aside from Harry and possibly Beaks, one of the more knowledgeable chaps around here. And hey, I've never see ROPE either. In fact, my film knowledge is very empty, as I've not seen or studied the films of Hitchcock, Bergman, Cassavetes, or Woody Allen.

So do I get laughed in the face? I don't feel like you need to have seen ALL the greats to be a great reveiwer though. A lot of great movies are product of hype. A good reviewer is someone with unique and interesting style of writing. Because I mean at the end of the day you are reading about someone elses feelings. Sure there can be technical talk in a review, but you don't want to read a review where all they do is just babble on about technical aspects of the movie. So what if they copied a shot/angle from Citizen Kane, or used a song from The Good, The Bad, The Ugly. Is the movie good or bad? Can you convey valid reasoning as to why it is good or bad. Plus like crime and gang movies aren't that important to me. I wouldn't expect someone who focuses on Sci-Fi to know a great deal about romantic comedies. Having seen a lot of movies really only helps you realize when someone is just plain stealing/rehashing ideas over again. A good example would be The Break Up, had I not seen Annie Hall I may have thought this was something original and different, but I've seen Annie Hall and they may as well called it a Platinum Dunes Remake of it.

The shit that pisses me off is when they claim to have watched movies like 3-5 times in a theater....but they don't have time to contribute to the talk backs or update shit. Whats the fucking point of seeing a brand new movie more then twice in theaters unless you had some part of making the film? The only reason I could see would be if you saw it when it first came out, really liked it and caught it again right away then like a week later had a chance to go to a Q&A screening. That or catching it three times at different festivals to see how its cut differently. But just going down to your local AMC 5 times for the same fucking film that just came out, I don't believe it.

His work is beyond anything anyone else is doing - and that easily includes me who is just a measly contributor (although Echo is actually getting the closest of anyone).
I see you and me at the same level, doing interesting stuff and having fun while still trying to make it professional as hell. Also you and Danny have the charisma to draw people in; you two are our resident personalities. But Snowcone, fuck, he is playing at a whole different level IMO. I guess I am doing a bad job of explaining myself. I will try again:
Series, you are a niche reviewer. You do certain movies that you want to see or have interest in. You are not part of a staff where you might be ASSIGNED a movie or have to interview someone outside of your general interest (even if your interest are pretty broad). And I don't believe you get paid any money for your reviews, right?
It is easy for these guys to interview another film geek like Tarantino or Roth, but what would happen if they actually had to interview an old legend like Robert Wise before he died? Or a foreign film auteur like Jacques Audiard or Allah forbid Abbas Kiarostami.
I know that this is a film geek site, but part of its "charm" (or least claim to it) is that they know movies and look at a wide variety of genres and films. Well, if you have people who don't know what the fuck they are talking about, why should we trust their taste or their judgement when interviewing filmmakers?
As sad as it is to say this, Quint and the rest of the AICN team are journalist and critics and you expect them to have a certain level of competency.
And I easily fall under the category of someone who is probably not a good candidate as an interviewer or critic, especially for a site like this. I am missing way to many movies to be a legitimate critic of films here. This is a film geek site and I haven't seen ARMAGEDDON, ATTACK OF THE CLONES (10 minute were enough), the new TCM (2 minutes were enough), GI JOE, any TRANSFORMERS, STAR TREK, TERMINATOR SALVATION, DRAG ME TO HELL, ect. That is serious gaps in my library for a geek site. BUT if I was working here I would see them and go out of my way to rent them. -

Have either of you guys seen a little sci-fi film called SUSPENSION? It came out last year and I saw a screening of it last year and thought it was pretty good. I was talking to a friend of mine who onlined it and it suddenly popped into my head.

Say you where going to into some heavy shit here stateside, like rob an office that is heavy mob/crime affiliated. So you are going at it alone, you will probably be in a room with 3-to-4 people armed with pistols and there will be more armed guys around. What would you go in armed with?

To us laymen, when one throws around terms like "assault rifle" and "hunting rifle", it automatically distinguishes the looks of the guns for us. That said, though, any rifle can be used for "assault", so I understand your qualm with that terminology.

I was taking a summer session in filmmaking at the NC School of the Arts the summer bt my junior and senior year. One of my friends that summer, his short was very obviously influenced by the idea of Cube (don't remember if it was actually out yet or not), and an old Twilight Zone episode, bc his was about a group of strangers waking up in a white room without any memory of how they got there. And I've had many pple tell me to see Primer. I've always wanted to, but I think I missed its release, and I wasn't in the habit of renting movies again (bc of budgetary reasons) until the last few months. I'll have to put it on my list.

His initial script had it being some intergalactic space opera though set in the future, where there are factions of Ghost Busters fighting each other. Like the jumpsuits, photon phasers, marshmallow man and the symbol was all him. You may have known that but I think it sounds pretty cool. I wonder if you can read that anywhere.

They come into being for a reason. Some might be ludicrous, some might be merely descriptive, but over time some can actually accrue true meaning. And as an artillery man, there is only one type of Gun, a Howitzer! Everything else is just a weapon.

I love it at every level. I can watch HS games, college games and especially pro games. I am a true fan. I do not need anyone to watch a game with, or even have a rooting interest in a particular team. I just love the game. Now, I can not stand the boring one, and refuse to watch bad teams - I will find other things to do. But you damn betcha I will be parked in front of teevee when a big game is one. HS games are just fun, reminds me of being a kid. College games are where the true passion is. No atmosphere can touch that in American sports. Pro games, can unite an entire city or state or divide a nation! I always laugh when I hear some individual sport like MMA (this decades WWF) saying they will be bigger than football, even though no one really believes it. Because since the rise of organized team sports, individual sports have become niche, because they lack the ability to consitently create a sense of community. For a moment, people might be talking about that big fight, but only for a moment. As big as Tyson was, he was a mere shadow of Ali, who was the last fighter to be able to interest an entire nation. While that is certainly true of a lot of the kids that go to college, it sure is not true for all of them. There are those (and this pertains to all college sports) that actually make use of their "free ride". And those sports, despite all their "ills", actually help recruit students/faculty to their college. Now to the actual game, nothing is better than college football. Here is where I will disagree with toad on: the loyalty to one's college > than that of a NFL franchise. The connection one feels to a college one attended is a thousand times greater than an NFL team. Especially in this day and age where one does not keep one's favorite players on the team. Even fucking Jerry Rice ended up moving on from the Niners. Look it the whore Favre. It's not the same as the 70's Steelers or 80's Niners. But that's just my opinion.

Heres what bothers me about college football. I went to one of the two big colleges in my state. Then I moved to the city with the other big college. So I got a bank card with my college on it, whenever I use it now I get the same fucking reaction OVER AND OVER again, "OH I CAN'T ACCEPT THAT". First off these two colleges are not even big rivals, mainly because one is much better in football then the other. So I usually just tell the person who WON'T ACCEPT my card then fine I just won't pay....money trumps all of course. That or I ask them if they attended the other college, and 10 times out of 10 that person never even went to fucking college. So yeah you can show loyalty but trying to insult me just because I have a credit card with the another fucking school on it while you didn't even fucking go to the college is just fucking lame.

College loyalty I grant you, trumps City loyalty - if you went to college, and if your team played big time football, and if it was only game in town and if they were successful. In small out of the way places with no pro team, college is king. But in large cities with many college programs, the fan base is split. But they unite for the pros.

Having not gone to a huge college for the first 3 years of college I didn't really know anything about tailgating. So when I transfered colleges and lived in a shitty ass one bedroom apartment closer to campus then the dorms I was given a VIP seat to tailgating. Too bad I never participated in it, looking back I wish I had, I mean I had the best spot and I had my apartment right there. So I got used to waking up and just walking my dog in my boxers in the morning. So when the first home football game happened I didn't know about it. I woke up to let my dog out, just rolled outside in my boxers like normal and outside of my apartment is like 100+ people hanging out getting ready for the game. I said fuck it they were on my lawn and just kept walking my dog. Later that day when the game was on I invited my buddies over and we stole a bunch of shit from everyone. I know we are assholes.

It wasn't until like the third home game that me and my buddies did that. I was pissed because after all the tailgaters went home my fucking lawn was always covered in trash. So fuck them for not picking up after themselves, I knew I had a vaild reason for doing it.

Are some of my favorite movies. I'm always thinking of cool things to make documentaries on. I think camera men would be a good thing. I was just thinking that a documentary about reality stars could be good. Like a real in depth thing, what does winning really mean. Maybe do this 10 years from now when people are less afraid to talk bad about it and give the truth. But I am interested to know how much of their soul these people had to sell for fame and what it cost them.

But I can watch a great college football game more easily than I can watch a great NFL game. A SEC game for example...LSU vs. Alabama, Florida vs. Georgia...Tennessee vs. Auburn...etc...Even if it were my Jets vs. Patriots..that game got nothing on the best college games. 80,000 + screaming fans...just a fantastic atmosphere. And tailgating is required.

Is that he loves these expliotation films SO MUCH, because of how crazy they were. But when he remakes them he does not go all the way crazy. Its almost like he is trying to make family friendly versions of crazy ass films he loves. Sure his movies are rated R, but they don't feel like and R rated movie. They are more R just for language.

That is one of the all time awesome 70s action films. And Tommy Lee Jones is great as a Vietnam vet who isn't all there - and in some ways you are thankful he isn't.
When I was a video store clerk I used to recommend it all the time. Up there with the Silent Partner and Thief for guy movies I would recommend to people. -
Well, I used to like both. I used to love comic books, but as I get older I lose less and less interest. Mostly because the stuff I liked is based on what I liked as a kid or a teenager - comics today are nothing like that. And the characters have changed so much. Plus, I have a big pet peeve about how so many comics try to treat them very serious and very adult - they are guys in costumes with powers! I don't want them serious and adult, I want them to tap into my inner 13-year old. Super-hero comics should be made for teenagers, not for 30-years old.
And for football I liked it up until I played college football for a year. I think I kind of got out of it because I couldn't hack it as a player; that which you can't have you disdain.
I still like football, but I really hate football fans. A lot of football fans have to start getting a life. To me there is nothing more pathetic than a 30 or 40 year old man wearing a players jersey. That is for a ten year old kid to do, because he fantasizes about being that player. I got news for you tubby, you're never going to be Adrian Peterson or Randy Moss.
And Eagles fans can lick my taint. -
Good discription of why football fans suck. What annoys me about football fans is that if you don't like football they just can't understand it. Its like you are an alien to them. Especially when it comes from someone like me, because usually I am one the biggest guys in the room (tall not fat). So I don't look like a typical nerd. But its always annoying these 5'5" 250 pound tub of fat acting like I'm crazy because I don't want to sit around drink shitty beer and eat pizza all day. Well I wouldn't mind doing that, just as long as I'm watching a movie or TV. Also I never played football, but that never bothered me. I was always friends with football players through high school and college, and usually they cared less about football then someone who didn't play. I can't wait to see Big Fan though. Thats my brother in a nut shell...except his is smart as shit and makes more then probably all of us combined, just a huge boner Giants fan.

I also agree with Continentalop about comic book characters being taken so seriously as well. While I like serious comics outside of Marvel and DC staple characters, I think its more so the fans being such sticklers for facts thats more annoying then the comics being serious. Like fans getting all upset because Superman turned left when he ALWAYS turns right is a bit ridiculous, especailly when that won't stop fans from buying shit like Wednesday comics up like its crack. I think comic book fans more so then any other sort of fan still have a chance to unit at times and stand up to the big two. But as less and less people go to the comic book shop and just order online, what the fans want becomes less and less important. When you are all by yourself and never get together about things you care about your opinion really does not matter.

Die hard comic book fans, Star Trek fans, Star Wars fans, Sports fans, those military nuts who are not in the army. etc. There is something wrong with all of them.
Of course, nothing wrong with doing it per say, everyone has there vice, but I just laugh at anyone who won't admit it is childish or ridiculous to live vicariously through other people and movies in such a manner. Fuck, I am more than willing to admit it I would love to be a superhero or have been a pro football player, but I am draw the line in wearing a cape or an Urlacher[ or James Harrison uniform. And even if I did, I would readily admit it was childish and own up to it.
I do try and dress up a little and imitate Bogart and Mitchum when I go out though. So I can't act to high and mighty. -

Must be a holdover of the uniform thing from me military days, but a classic three piece suit is still the height of men's sartorial splendor for me. And my wife gets a kick out of seeing me dressed up as well.

I got two 3 piece suits, one with pin stripes so it is totally gangster. The only problem is that they are a little to dress up for most occasions.
My big problem is shoes. I have huge feet so it is hard for me to get good shoes. I wear mostly Allen Edmonds because they are the only ones who make many styles in my size.
If I ever get some money, I'm gonna get some custom fitted Beruti or Salvatore Ferragamo's. And a Brioni suit. That would be "pimp", as the kids say. -
My wife and I go to a few affairs that allow for the 3 piecer's to be pulled out. I especially like wearing a waistcoat (that's vest for you none anglophiles) that is a different color than the suit, and braces (suspenders). Classic subdued pinstripes, are the best.

The movie was shot in 6 days for $20,000. He had an almost 1 to 1 ratio, meaning he only did one take for a lot of the scenes.
Ulmer by the way served as an apprentice under F.W Murnau (Nosferatu), and worked with Robert Siodmak (The Killers), Billy WIlder (Sunset Blvd) and Fred Zinneman (High Noon) in Germany, but got stuck in low budget here in the states. -

They have rebooted James Bond, giving him a different personality and tone from previous James Bond films. However, the difference is:
A) James Bond is an adapted character from a book. The books are the original source material.
B) They are an ongoing series of movies and do not have two version competing with each other.
C) The James Bonds in the movies are played by actors, meaning they can't just imitate each other. They have to make the character their own. Comic book characters have no actors so it should be easy to keep them consistent character wise.
D) James Bond is also not running in two series simultaneously. If they wanted to reboot Spider-Man and the Marvel characters, just reboot them. I find this to be disingenuous.
E) And yes, I do like the new James Bond series. I think they went in the right direction. But someone who is a fan of the James Bond movies before this has every right to say that this is wrong and a bad direction. He is perfectly right in saying so. WHICH HAS BEEN MY POINT ALL ALONG that IMO the Ultimate Universe has been bad adaptations. That is my opinion.
