The Dawn Treader From CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE VOYAGE OF THE... Looks Like...This??
Merrick here...
NarniaFans and NarniaWeb have our first reputable look at the Dawn Treader boat from THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER.
The Dawn Treader pic below originates HERE - where you can find similar images as well as a better look at the whole boat. NarniaWeb also has some pics (including clearer looks at the Treader's hull profile) HERE.

I'm not terribly familiar with this book and can't speak to what this boat is supposed to look like...so this ship may be a slavishly faithful interpretation for all I know. But, somehow, I never considered that a vessel worthy of titular mention would look like one of those big swingy ship rides from a traveling carnival.

NARNIA 3 should arrive in theaters next year, under the direction of the sometimes great Michael Apted (who did not direct PRINCE CASPIAN, the series' second installment, despite IMDB's misattribution of credit).

meh...

for all we know, this could just be the base coat or maybe even just a placement for the CG? I dunno. But I did like those films...
-
Or at least some chick high on coke wearing a metal bikini. These are my demands.
-
That shit looks so cheap.
-
Fucking got stuck on one for 3 hours once because the breaks went out. THREE HOURS.
-
Looks fucking kak!
-
That is absolutely how the front of the Dawn Treader SHOULD look. Sheesh.

??????

Merrick, did you ever hear of the vikings? Did you ever see a ship in a sinbad movie? How did you even get this job? Also, as you said yourself, you know nothing of how this ship is 'supposed' to look, yet you feel the need to bash it based only on a pic of it's awesome masthead? You shouldn't post drunk or retarded or whatever you were when you posted. Fail.
-
I recall they could climb a ladder and peer out the dragon's mouth.
Glad to hear this is moving forward. -
I always pictured it as this wood carved and painted chinese/viking looking thing.
-
The worst kind of corporate crap, bland, flat and totally risk-free. Avoid like the plague.
-
I thought bc Prince Caspian didn't make enough money, they were pulling the plug on the franchise? This is the first news we've heard of this project since that earlier statement.

Wow! Huge amount of Narnia fans coming out of the woodwork...
by marxeffect
I think Merrick was refering to the fact that at this stage it does look like something you would find in a fair ground. I personally don't think its rustic enough. it's too 'clean'
-
Disney is not making this, but yes, the series is going forward, just lower budget. And that ship looks exactly like the drawing of the Dawn Treader on the cover of the paperback I had back in the late 70's, so I think it looks great! HoboNode, I'd love to hear that story of being stuck on that ride - sound hilarious!
-
There are plenty of times you should keep your mouth shut, Merrick...criticizing the look of the Dawn Treader when you know nothing about it is a good candidate. Like most fools, you don't just speak when you have something to say, you speak when you have to say something.
-
It would look cooler then. I swear I rode this shit with my nephew a few weeks ago.

It looks just like the ship on a famous series of book covers...
by flickapoo
...the ones I grew up with in fact. Not great illustrations really, but I guess I'm OK with it since it's what I grew up with....and those painted medieval wood sculptures were usually pretty garish in real life...
-
You'll never know it wasn't CG.

I've seen so far. The transfer and Picture quality were excellent. I'm not a fan of grain and I wish all Blu-Rays looked like Caspian.

I'm a huge fan of the books, thought The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe was acceptable and didn't get around to seeing Caspian. This set piece does look a bit carnival-y, but there are plenty of movie set pieces that would look kinda goofy sitting half-built in a sunny studio lot.

SO IT LOOKS LIKE MY PENIS A.K.A. THE HAMMER OF GOD?
by carlthormark1978

They do make ointments for venereal diseases like that. Yikes!
-
I think Merrick acted stupidly.
Can I be president now? I've also organized by nephew's pop warner team. Well, technically only the defense. And, technically only the linebackers.
To the post above, the Dawn Treader was a 'new' ship, built and commissioned for this specific journey to find the seven lost Lords of Narnia. So it won't look rustic, it's a newly constructed ship.
I'm worried that by the time they get through to the Last Battle, Peter will be wearing a toupee. It's like the Potter movies; at some point the stars are going to look a bit old. Which may be why Emmanuel Lewis should always/only star in movies with a main character that's a kid. -
Hahahaha...I know that guy isn't the same as Emmanuel Lewis.

Yes, actually, that is PRECISELY what it is supposed to look lik
by revenge_of_fett
CS Lewis had pictures in the book of the ship, and that's EXACTLY what it looks like. The fact that a carnival ride is ALSO based on a Viking ship....is somehow troubling? Fucking hell!

"But, somehow, I never considered that a vessel worthy of titular mention would look like one of those big swingy ship rides from a traveling carnival."
Where in this do you read anywhere that he thinks it looks like ass? I think you would do well to not project your own interpretations on something that is, regardless of Merrick's PERSONAL feelings, solid objective reporting. -
thanks for making me laugh
-
that's pretty much how it's supposed to look. There are certainly cooler interpretations of the description on some paperbacks, but by and large it's usually that shade of green with that frilly ecoutrement. (SP?) But in the context (three years after the previous film takes place, and the first and only ship in the New Narnian navy) it's sort of understandable that it looks... well, like ass.

Admittedly, it does look a little too clean and new,
by shut the fuck up donny
but I suspect it's easier to take something new and roughen it up a bit, rather than design and paint it roughed up from the get-go.
-
I misread your post as saying "I recall they could climb a ladder and pee out the dragon's mouth."
-
he does support the upcoming best film of this generation.
TRON LEGACY!! CHRISTMAS 2010!!! -
. . . the skiff from Return of the Jedi.
-
CS Lewis modeled his description of the ship after an amusement park ride. You ignorant child.
-
I bet they did that too. They should have anyways.
-
Soooooo ... I guess the quote from the actual C. S. Lewis novel that they post under the pics in the link you gave us didn't clue you in that the masthead was supposed to look like that? Or are we just pissing on Narnia movies now? You sound like the same dude who pissed all over THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE because Father Christmas showed up and handed out weapons. IT HAPPENED IN THE GODDAMN BOOK!!!
I hope they at least get to "The Silver Chair" like the BBC did, though I'm praying they make it to "The Magician's Nephew", which was easily the best one of the series (as well as the actual "first" Narnia novel, the one that explains and sets up everything). -
He should go back to directing the UP series, this is a crappy project.
-
and since the books predate these types of carnival rides, wouldn't it be more correct to say that the rides look like the ship? : P
-
http://tinyurl.com/dawntreader1This one they better not fuck up, because it's everyone's favorite volume. Who am I kidding? They've already fucked up the first two.
-
The design is fine; it's the material that screws it up
-
I thought they pulled the plug on this series? did another studio pick it up or am i imagining shit again?
-
What you're looking out is unfinished and not what you'll see in the film or official publicity. If you were to post a shot of someone in a mocap suit then say, "Wha? Beowulf looks like this?" you'd sound just as retarded as you do here.
-
"Who am I kidding? They've already fucked up the first two. "
The second one was fine if a bit boring, the first one was brilliant so quit your whining you little piece of shit. -
Even though what you are saying makes total sense...I actually do that shit and you are right on the money...paint it new and then fuck it the fuck up...Donny!
-
I thought they weren't going to do anymore after the second one bit the dust? Plus, it was shitty, too.
-
But it looks quite like the illustration on the cover of the classic paperback edition of the Chronicles.
-
to say? Just asking?
-
Fuck no.
-
Mr. Tumnus' got his eye on you, though.
-
that's what it looks like if you weren't too fucking lazy to look up the book cover.
-
We could have a sitcom where Louis CK plays CS Lewis, desperately trying to get funding to build a model of the Dawn Treader for a movie that may or may not happen. Hilarity ensues. And Amy Poehler could play the Debra Winger role from "Shadowlands" as CS Lewis' lover. Or, wait, do I mean Louis CK Lewis? or CS Louis CK? It begins to get really confusing...
-
There's a positive comment.
-
I didn't expect to see something that looked that retarded upon clicking this talkback. A bunch of TB'ers kept me going too. Fucking meow mix hahahaaaa
-
Jizzed in my pants.

Don't try to guess too much about the quality of the movie based on this. Comeon... the thing is going to be mostly submerged. Chill the fuck out.

Christian appology for childreen turned into an amusement park
by asimovlives
Something tells me that C.S. Lewis wouldn't had found that too amusing.
-
Are people REALLY looking forward to seeing a third one?
-
He directed Gorky Park, Gorrilas In The Mist and the first two episodes of Rome, all stuff i have enoyed quite a lot. The guy is alright by me.
-
About the most I can say is they should have made it look a little more rustic and "woody", but it 'sokay.
It's just the Goddamn boat. It's the story that rocks. -
Lewis's best book by far.
-
Black as Wormwood...that would totally work. Given how sketchy the book is, there's a lot of opportunity for a good screenwriter.
-
It took the most boring book and made it into something in-depth and brilliant. I loved the look of the movie, the Telmarines being Mediterranean, the excellent castle siege sequence (one of the best sequences of that nature I've ever seen, even if it does feature teens and talking mice! Actually, the mouse part was really cool, the little part where they're avoiding the sleeping cat, and Eddie Izzard as the voice of Reepicheep was genius casting!). I hope Dawn Treader keeps up the quality level, even though they will have less money to play with. I bet they don't go for as dark a look and tone as Caspian because the execs probably think that's what turned audiences off (when it obviously had nothing to do with the SHIT release scheduling and lack of promotion from Disney). The girl who plays Lucy (only Lucy and Edmund are in this one, the two older kids don't come back) is growing into a great actress. She's like a young Kate Winslet or something, I firmly believe she's a future top star. PLEASE don't let this be the last Narnia movie because The Silver Chair is my favourite and they will make that next.
-
Disney isn't making any more Narnia films, but Walden Media is continuing with the series with I believe Warners taking over for Disney. And yes... I am looking forward to another one. I enjoyed the first one. Didn't love it, but definitely enjoyed it. The second one was kind of eh, but as as someone mentoned above book 3 is most people's favorite book and I'm lookng forward to seeing what they can do. It's a new director too with Apted taking over for Admenson or however it's spelled. Of course other than the Up documentary series I don't exactly love a lot of Apted's work, but I'm willing to wait and see.
-
At least according to descriptions in the book and Pauline Baynes original illustrations. The mast head is probably fresh out of the mold. I'd expect them to weather it some for the finished film.
-
I would have thought that was common knowledge on a movie site. Did you hear Sony stopped making Hellboy movies after the first one? *roll eyes*

"Dawn Treader" is the most haunting, gorgeous book in the Narnia series and I'd love to see them nail it. If they mess it up, I will never forgive them.
-
butt hat's what you get for relasing a 2 hour plus kids movie... It reminded me of willow a bit...the scene with the WW's return ws freakin AWESOME...didn't care for Lionee, With & The Wardrobe though, I liked the BBC version better...glad to hear they're making the third...
-
they won't use this as an actual carnival ride that transitions the kids to Narnia when "Dawn Treader" is on high seas.
-
The girls look piggy and the guys are total fags and can't act for shit.
-
And a fairly accurate interpretation at that. This movie series seems to improve with each episode. I hope they get to do Last Battle. :D
-
Looks like shit.

I'm glad they got this out of development hell so quick
by mockingbuddha
It's not the best thing in the world but it's solid and well made. Plus, Prince Caspian gave me an opportunity to teach my kids the difference between a rout and an ordered retreat. Also they got to learn what flanking is, and how a small, seemingly inconsequential event can disastrously affect the outcome of a major battle. Soon my kids will take over a certain country to our north and set me up in luxury. Sweet. Plus it's two of the few times I've thought the movies were better than the books, which never impressed me much.
-
I love the little musical cues that play during the castle siege when Reepache is on screen. It kind of reminded me of the soundtrack from The Untouchables. I really liked it, and they only played it twice, which I thought was pretty cool. I like songs and music that leave you wanting more, and I hate it when some band or singer gets some stupid catchy melody, and then proceeds to repeat it 30 or 40 times during a song. Reepachee's Theme rocks.
-
As I understand it, not all the books will be movies (unlike Potter). "Dawn Treader" is likely to be the last one. Unless it makes a billion dollars, that is, which is highly unlikely.
-
Around the 0:52-58 point, and again closer up at 1:17-1:25, in this video --
http://tinyurl.com/2zvacj
-- you can see how the Dawn Treader's prow looked in the BBC version -
That's what you're getting there - this new NARNIA will have a Syfy budget.
-
They wanted to court Latino audiences so badly they transformed Caspian from an European kid of 12 with blond curly hair to a bland Latino, his race to Conquistadors, etc. Gave him a Latino accent and somehow decided to make everything about his race and culture inspired by Spanish - and it backfired. Plus, Caspian - one of the if not the most important character outside of Aslan in the books - was played by Ben Barnes, who just had NO charisma for the role whatsoever. THAT guy inspires the world? Not likely. Caspian's whole weight of the world was put on the shoulders of an actor who JUST could NOT cut it, who was burdened by the Latino-i-zation of the character and his culture ... and the whole thing was just a mess that killed the entire franchise for me. Wake me when they remake it.
-
Perhaps, but Conquistadors are from Spain, which last time I checked is in Europe. Was Caspian blond? I don't recall. It's been a while since I've read the book, and yeah, the age thing pissed me off. He should have been Edmund's age or younger, not a rival of Peter's for leadership. They bastardized the plot as well. They could redeem themselve with Dawn Treader, but I doubt that will happen.
-
Damn straight about Santa Claus or rather Father Christmas giving weapons. It happened in the friggin' book, and was a major turning point.
-
because there is a misunderstanding out there that these books are children's books that don't deal with big issues like war and death and sacrifice and people dying because Aslan doesn't show up and save the day right away. It failed because it can't explain a complex Christian enigma in a way that parents are comfortable talking to their kids about. My kids wanted to know why Aslan didn't just show up and kick everybody's ass right away, and if your kid knows that Aslan is Jesus/God, that's not a real simple conversation.
-
'strue!
-
It just didn't make "enough". $400 million worldwide is still a pretty decent amount.
-
Most props and sets look positively ridiculous and cheap when they aren't lit and staged as intended. Taking a swipe here like this is pretty juvenile.

and I LIKED the Narnia books as a child. I thought the film emphasised all the WRONG elements and above all else, offered a view of England and the English tailored to suit American perceptions. Twee, do you even know what TWEE means?

posting news about movies you know the first thing/actually care about?
-
Each film guarantees at least one viewing from me, especially with ultra-camp William Moseley.
-
Seriously, its like 25 of you talkbackers got together and said "lets ride this guy for no reason in talkback for the next year". What did he do? I don't get it. Maybe its just 1 or 2 of you and it seems like more. Now, he may be an ass, but I've seen more of you guys riding him and attacking him than him being an ass.
-
In fact I was looking around for information about it a few months ago. I don't really like the movies all that much, at least not enough to see more than once, but I was curious about what happened. Thanks for never telling us AICN!
-
In someways, sure -- it was more faithful, on the whole. But it had some serious problems (even leaving aside special-effects issues). The Disney white witch is certainly better than the horribly-overacting BBC white witch.
-
Because, lockesleg never has anything good to say about anything and he seems to just always be playing the devil'sadvocate and taking the contrary position on every issue. And often his criticism only consists of little more than "this sucks." I was shocked that he didn't say that John Hughes sucks in the Eulogy talkback.
-
Exactly what (or what wasn't) in the two NARNIA movies that was or wasn't in the books? Considering the Disney (and now, Warner's or whoever's) manifesto on those two were "Make them as much like LORD OF THE RINGS as possible!", I'd say both of them turned out pretty goddamn well, and I'm sure DAWN TREADER will be just as faithful to the book. And whoever said that making the Telmarines into Spainards was somehow courting the Mediterranean audience is waaaaay off-base -- I seem to remember them being described in the book as "swarthy" and "dark-haired". You think it's bad now, wait til they get to A HORSE AND HIS BOY and they start chopping away at those goddamn Arabs ...!
-
Not just those goddamn Arabs, but their goddamn Heathen God too. Honestly, I'd pay to see a Walden-produced Last Battle just to see how they try (and fail at least as badly as the current two movies) to unChristianify that absolute shocker of an ending.
Guess I'm pretty much alone in preferring Prince Caspian to TLTWATW. I know they tried to Lord of the Rings it up a bit more, but the novel was thinly and weakly plotted anyway, so I don't have much of a problem with that. The problem is that Walden are trying to have it both ways with the Aslan=God bit. On the one hand they don't want to scare away non-Christians by being as overt as Lewis was, but on the other hand taking out the Christian overtones (apparently Lewis didn't like people to call it an allegory just creates plot holes. As an atheist, I really don't have a problem with watching or reading something with a God figure in it, and I kinda doubt much of the potential Narnia audience would either.
