THE DRAGON Will Not Be ENTERed Now, But AWAKENED!!

Published at:  Aug 05, 2009 9:06:33 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Kurt Sutter, who produced, directed, and wrote various installments of THE SHIELD and SONS OF ANARCHY for television, is prepping a "noir style" reworking of Bruce Lee's ENTER THE DRAGON.

Sutter said he's writing "Awaken the Dragon" as a contemporized drama about a lone FBI agent who pursues a rogue Shaolin monk into the bloody world of underground martial arts fight clubs.

...says Latino review HERE.

The LR guys also tell us that Warner Bros. is closing in on Rain to take on a major role in the film. Presumably this is based on his appearance in the studio's forthcoming Wachowskyfest NINJA ASSASSIN.

Rain also sings...

Glad I didn't name my toddler Partly Cloudy; woulda looked kinda lame given that Rain's star seems to be rising so assuredly...

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Its shit like this constant remaking re-imaging re-selling us the same thing over and over again that killed the record industry. Not piracy, not even the evil internet. Selling us the same thing over and over again to the point where even the most passive consumers said eh no thanks. Thats what I think hurt the music industry and thats what I see happening to a big chunk of Hollywood.... anyway thats my 2 cents worth... as for this movie specifically... eh its a no sale from me. I'll give it a miss.

Aspiring screenwriters, like myself, ain't getting no love. These production companies sit a round table, every morning, with their pink box of donuts. A fat booklet sits on the table entitled REMAKE IDEAS. Each line has a movie title and a reason why it should be remade, be it total gross or whatever is popular at the time. The popular Ninja Gaiden series on the xbox and PS3 is why we're getting these damn ninja movies now. Who gave a shit about ninjas before that game sold millions of copies.

I like your thinking. I'm all about the prequels. I like having unnecessary character backstories hammered down my throat. Let's have a "Raiders of the Lost Ark" prequel showing the childhood of henchman Toht. We could see a scene of him burning his hand picking up a mark off the hot surface of a sunny street. Nearby, young Belloq and young Dietrich laugh at him from their bicycles and he feels dejected.

Whilst "Enter the Dragon" had a cool score, a solid villain, and quotable dialog, it would have been NOTHING without Bruce Lee.The man is, and always will be, the most iconic Martial arts actor of all time. That mixture of skill, physique, charisma and sheer screen presence cannot be emulated. So good luck to the CGI'd, Wire Fu'd twat who tries to fill his shoes.Just like virtually every remake these days, this piece of shit won't be seeing my money.

    by grandpa bunche

If truth be told, ENTER THE DRAGON is only remembered for Bruce Lee's ass-whuppin' awesomeness, Angela Mao ying's flashback battle, and Jim Kelly's Death Star-sized 'fro. The story sucks, the directing is pedestrian, and the film only comes to life during the admittedly impressive fights, and I say that both as a Bruce fan and a martial arts movie buff. Sonny Chiba's THE STREET FIGHTER blows ENTER THE DRAGON out of the water six ways to Sunday as an overall movie, but there is no denying Lee's charisma and emanation of a transcendent "I am an avatar of death" vibe. And if you ask me, Lee's finest cinematic hour was in FIST OF FURY, once known on these shores as THE CHINESE CONNECTION. Better story, it actually has a message thrown in with the violence, and the fights are both savage and spectacular.

And as for that Rain guy, I'd say "Rain" is a better name than that of Okinawan pop star "Gackt." Yeah, I know it's his real name, but was it a wise idea to pull a Cher move with a name that sound like a house cat trying to cough up a hairball?

There are cultural sensivities here to consider. Lee is Chinese American. This casting will be looked at as an insult to the Chinese. Same with African Americans playing Africans and such.I don't have a problem with Japanese playing Koreans or vice versa. It's only a political difference in most cases. Racial differences are far greater and insulting when one plays another. Let's not ask for anything more than what any other racial group does. AND for the RECORD again...Remaking ENTER THE DRAGON with a singing popstar is the stupidest fucking idea in the world.

Enter the Dragon is fine as it is

    by maelstrom_zero

There's really no need for a remake. The only reason why a remake would be necessary is if the original property is generally unknown or underappreciated (like 3:10 to Yuma, which worked out fantastically), or if the original property is just plain bad.
Enter the Dragon is laughable at points and the characterization is sometimes awful, but it oozes with cheesy 70's charm that makes it just plain awesome. Heck, I was raised in the 90's and had no knowledge of geek stuff, but I watched Enter the Dragon and was amazed by three things: 1) the crazy blackspoitation imagery evoked by Jim Kelly, 2) the way that Bruce Lee made pure, unadulterated fighting look fatal and scary, and 3) Han. Han was one badass cat, straight out of a comic book.
Put simply, the need for a remake isn't there. Ane more likely than not, the end result will still be as campy and ridiculous as the original Enter the Dragon was--without the charisma of Lee and Kelly to carry the film--basically, awful.

Sokitome: This Is The Greatest Martial Arts Film...

    by media messiah

...of all time, and a watershed moment in martial arts culture, and somewhat of a coming out of China, and the Chinese people, that, in addition to Lee's work creating the tv series Kung-Fu, which he went uncredited for, as the show was stolen from him. Because of the nature of Lee's efforts in bringing Chinese culture to the world, especially the West, it, his efforts, should not be undermined. His work was very personal to him and his people in giving them back their pride and equality which many in the West denied them. The story of the new remake, as presented, will feature an FBI agent against a Shoalin Priest gone rogue??? Hello??? Picture a Shoalin being taken down by a South Korean--that will be read as an insult to not only the people of Hong Kong, but China as a whole. Now, Hollywood wants to do business in China--China being a nation of two billion people, many of them, probable movie goers, or at least, tv watchers who will see this film in aftermarket broadcasts, and they, the execs of Hollywood wish to insult them? There is a good chance that save for DVD bootlegs, that the government of China will not even allow this film to be shown, or distributed, in China due to it being viewed as an insult. Really, this is how many of these things are looked upon in Asia. For instance, the Chinese and Japanese largely have historical resentment toward each other...and you can bet that China...being a backer of North Korea, will not appreciate a South Korean being cast in a role for a remake of a film...that was made in Hong Kong by China's most famous son, Bruce Lee, a real martial arts expert, the best there ever was, and my hero. Speaking of that, Rain does not even rank as a martial arts champion? The insults abound here!!!

    Media Messiah I understand but

    by sokitome

Again I say even playing ground. How can we as Asian Americans (I'm assuming you are Asian like me) ask for something Caucasians and Blacks do not even do for their own Nationalities and ethnicities? Are we such a special race that we demand this kind of attention when other races don't? WASPs play Jews, Germans play English, English play Americans and French, African Americans play Africans (i.e. Don Cheadle who played an important an historical African figure in Hotel Rwanda). I do understand Americans in general think the Asians are all one ethnicity but I don't think casting like this is part of that misconception. At least they got the race right. BUT yes I do agree a pop singer in the role as iconic as this is very lame. HARRY WEINSTEIN you just said the stupidest thing ever on this site. Saying people who think ETD is the best martial arts movie are stupid just made you look like the biggest douchebag ever, considering ETD is held as the Greatest Martial Arts movie made by many critics and fans alike. I personally think Fist of Fury/Chinese Connection is better but have no problems with people thinking ETD is the best.

Enter the Dragon vs Fist of Fury vs Chinese Connection

    by hey_kobe_tell_me_how_my_ass_tastes

FoF is the best 'Raw' unrefined Bruce. Chinese Connection is the best 'comedic' Bruce with some amazing kick ass action. But Enter the Dragon is the Iconic Bruce. It is the Gold standard of very martial arts movie that followed. There are movies that have more outstanding action - Tony Jaa's movies come to mind. But none are better than seeing Bruce on screen. And none is Better than Enter the Dragon. I predict King Tut/Poltegeist type curses on all those involved in this shit.

Don't compare remaking The Godfather with remaking Enter the Dragon. Enter the Dragon was a shitty movie wrapped around a godlike candy center of roughly 20 solid minutes of Bruce Lee kicking ass.

Take those 20 minutes out, and we're talking about a should-be-on-MST3K level of suck. And no, that's not "every martial arts movie."

... produce an adaptation of Marvel's 'Master of Kung Fu' (which was basically a version of 'Dragon'). It has all the same elements as 'Dragon' plus the advantage of Fu Manchu as the big bad (if the 'M.O.K.F.' or 'Fu Manchu' rights aren't tied up). Just a thought.

Sokitome: It Is About National Border Lines

    by media messiah

Not so much race. The Chinese feel that they have been attacked and undermined by groups like the Japanese...who notoriously, and viciously, attacked them for centuries. This is a national pride issue. There is a marked difference between that, and variations of race. I am attempting to educate Hollywood on these cultural issues which are very sensitive. If they fail to learn...they are doomed to keep making mistakes like what happened with "Memoirs Of A Geisha". You'll recall that casting blunder? Well, at least...Quentin Tarantino was smart enough to change Lucy Lu's character to a mixed race person in "Kill Bill", and play-up the cultural sensitivity issue. He did it because he is a well studied martial arts practitioner, and thus, is well aware of these matters, far and beyond his training. And no, I am not Asian, although I am of mixed race, and I have always loved the Asian people, as if I knew the culture from another life?I was raised a Buddhist...a martial artist, and a yogi, one who studied the culture out of a deep love for it, and its people. Bruce Lee made being human cool to me...and he made Asians--people who I already respect...equal to any other group...and far surpassing them, in many ways. China is 5,000 plus years old...and still standing, and proud. That says plenty about the Chinese people...and their brillance--a culture that can stand in existence and thrive no matter the challenge, or number of enemies. China is now within 1 year of having nuclear parity with the U.S. and is on the edge of overwhelming us economically. This is a people to be respected, not diminished. If we keep disrespecting them...we will live to regret it--or worse, we might not live to regret it. Trust me, this disrespect by Hollywood is not accidental, it is their way of occulting, diluting, and assimilating something great, and for all the wrong reasons--much like how they use to mock Asians in movies for comedy.Rain is fine, I don't dislike him. He can play another character, just not the character that Lee made famous. Give that to a Chinese actor who is a real...and uncommon martial artist...and not a wire-fu phony.

Enter the Dragon was not only a great movie but every bit as influential as Seven Samurai. If Kurosawa's flick gets credit for creating such movie conventions as the hero sidebar and "heroes assemble" pieces how influential was Enter the Dragon which pretty much established iconography for the next 30 years of martial arts movies? Setting aside some of the most stunning action ever filmed Galactic is totally ignorant of some of the other HUGE innovations ETD introduced. Including the unheard of innovation of blending the 60s spy genre with martial arts. Let's not even mention the cultural impact ETD broke ground on with an Asian hero in a mainstream movie and the move towards realism in martial arts that was ENGENDERED singlehandedly by ETD's impact on western audiences and directors. Galactic your post is LOL, chaddyd got it right you're looking at one of the most seminal and (years later) a movie that still stands up 30 years later and you have no clue what you're looking at. It's literally like trying to explain Citizen Kane frame by frame to some noob who TOTALLY doesn't get it.
