THE DRAGON Will Not Be ENTERed Now, But AWAKENED!!
Merrick here...
Kurt Sutter, who produced, directed, and wrote various installments of THE SHIELD and SONS OF ANARCHY for television, is prepping a "noir style" reworking of Bruce Lee's ENTER THE DRAGON.
Sutter said he's writing "Awaken the Dragon" as a contemporized drama about a lone FBI agent who pursues a rogue Shaolin monk into the bloody world of underground martial arts fight clubs.
...says Latino review HERE.
The LR guys also tell us that Warner Bros. is closing in on Rain to take on a major role in the film. Presumably this is based on his appearance in the studio's forthcoming Wachowskyfest NINJA ASSASSIN.
Rain also sings...
Glad I didn't name my toddler Partly Cloudy; woulda looked kinda lame given that Rain's star seems to be rising so assuredly...

Rain?!!
-
...and double check all the stunt blank guns too...
-
Awful joke.
-
Like fuck she did.
-
Doesn't sound like a remake or an update just a movie that will use the same frame work.
-
Maybe she got a real job. You know, the kind of job that actually eats up all your time.
-
Is the only Bruce Lee remake that won't fail.
-
Frakking ridiculous.
-
Sorry, never noticed..
mmmm... bewbies.... -
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Its shit like this constant remaking re-imaging re-selling us the same thing over and over again that killed the record industry. Not piracy, not even the evil internet. Selling us the same thing over and over again to the point where even the most passive consumers said eh no thanks. Thats what I think hurt the music industry and thats what I see happening to a big chunk of Hollywood.... anyway thats my 2 cents worth... as for this movie specifically... eh its a no sale from me. I'll give it a miss.

Or hell, while we're at it, we might as well remake DISTRICT 9
by damiz707
-
into big budget 3-d hollywood films
-
most likely i would rather watch enter the dragon for the tenth time then awaken the dragon for the first time. and ninja assassin looks all cg.
-
when will the line be drawn?!! although i agree that this one seems more like inspired by than remake. that's cool. rain sucks.
-
Aspiring screenwriters, like myself, ain't getting no love. These production companies sit a round table, every morning, with their pink box of donuts. A fat booklet sits on the table entitled REMAKE IDEAS. Each line has a movie title and a reason why it should be remade, be it total gross or whatever is popular at the time. The popular Ninja Gaiden series on the xbox and PS3 is why we're getting these damn ninja movies now. Who gave a shit about ninjas before that game sold millions of copies.
-
As for the casting - eh. At least it's someone Asian playing the lead unlike other movies *coughairbendercough*. I liked him in Speed Racer, and he seems to do fine in Assassin (not my kind of movie so won't see).
-
Who is the fucking moron who came up with this stupid fucking idea. How can anyone possibly believe this is a good idea and especially with fucking cocksucking RAIN in it. ABSOLUTELY FUCKING RIDICULOUS
-
I cringe but u know it'll happen.
-
Unless you're talking about the Howard Hawks original and missed the DePalma version back in the 80s.
-
I scared a friend who was complaining about the LOTR movies. He went on and on for about an hour. I said Paramount has the option on a remake from Tolkien estate. Maybe they'll get it all right in their version.
His faced turned white. -
Wizard of Oz; Ben Hur; The Ten Commandments; Against all Odds [under-rated movie].
-
It's all about "viable properties" and "brand recognition" now. The storytelling days of Hollywood are long since over. If you want to tell a story, you'll need to make your own film.
-
If they're so interested in Rain you'd think he'd be getting his whole face on the NINJA ASSASSIN poster. Or his name mentioned in the trailer.
-
I had always imagined him coming back to do a remake of this film ever since "Rapid Fire" came out. Oh well, that is all.
-
This does not.
-
Prequel; not just pre-TEEN but pre-zygote.

Spandau Belly: I stand corrected!: Let's REremake: Scarface!!!!
by darfurontherocks2
-
I like your thinking. I'm all about the prequels. I like having unnecessary character backstories hammered down my throat. Let's have a "Raiders of the Lost Ark" prequel showing the childhood of henchman Toht. We could see a scene of him burning his hand picking up a mark off the hot surface of a sunny street. Nearby, young Belloq and young Dietrich laugh at him from their bicycles and he feels dejected.
-
but you don't want to be messing with what is considered a modern martial arts masterpiece. You just don't go around remaking/rebooting/reimaging/transmorgifying Bruce Lee.
-
RAIN and TIM CURRY prowl the back alleys and karaeoke bars of Tokyo's seedy underword looking for a map to the Lost City of Zinj, which happens to be tattoed on the back of Moon Bloodgood.

or an illegal death fight club. Martial Art films are becoming cliched. American made ones are the worst.
-
Now a days people fight in public places like parks and sub way plat forms. Under ground fight clubs are for pussies.
-
Gee, what a name. Yeah I thought about that. But of course I can't afford it. Maybe I'll just pick an old favorite and write it as a remake. Remember LEGEND starring Tom Cruise? I'll write a screenplay about forest dwellers and unicorns. I'll call it THE LEGEND CONTINUES.

Oh, never mind.

too many remakes. What's next; Breakin 2 Electric Boogaloo?I loved the Shield and somewhat loathed Sons of Anarchy, but Kurt needs to stay the fuck away from re-imagining this Classic. It jus ain't right.
-
Performance cap Rain and put a CG photorealistic Bruce lee in his place! We can do it! We have the tools! We have the technology!
-
Quick! Now, while no-one's looking!
-
Whilst "Enter the Dragon" had a cool score, a solid villain, and quotable dialog, it would have been NOTHING without Bruce Lee.The man is, and always will be, the most iconic Martial arts actor of all time. That mixture of skill, physique, charisma and sheer screen presence cannot be emulated. So good luck to the CGI'd, Wire Fu'd twat who tries to fill his shoes.Just like virtually every remake these days, this piece of shit won't be seeing my money.
-
If truth be told, ENTER THE DRAGON is only remembered for Bruce Lee's ass-whuppin' awesomeness, Angela Mao ying's flashback battle, and Jim Kelly's Death Star-sized 'fro. The story sucks, the directing is pedestrian, and the film only comes to life during the admittedly impressive fights, and I say that both as a Bruce fan and a martial arts movie buff. Sonny Chiba's THE STREET FIGHTER blows ENTER THE DRAGON out of the water six ways to Sunday as an overall movie, but there is no denying Lee's charisma and emanation of a transcendent "I am an avatar of death" vibe. And if you ask me, Lee's finest cinematic hour was in FIST OF FURY, once known on these shores as THE CHINESE CONNECTION. Better story, it actually has a message thrown in with the violence, and the fights are both savage and spectacular.
And as for that Rain guy, I'd say "Rain" is a better name than that of Okinawan pop star "Gackt." Yeah, I know it's his real name, but was it a wise idea to pull a Cher move with a name that sound like a house cat trying to cough up a hairball? -
EVERY MOVIE should be re-made. Every. Single. One. With COMPUTER GRAPHICS and 7.1 surround sound. Fuck 3D. No wait... with 3D but make everyone buy their own 3D glasses.
-
My mind just exploded! They're actually going to cast one of the LEAST intimidating motherfuckers on the planet to play one of the MOST fucking intimidating motherfuckers who ever lived. Fuck my 12 year old sister could beat the living shit out of Rain.
-
Only with younger actors - Nick Cannon in the Kevin Kline role! Megan Fox in the Glenn Close role! That girl from Disney's Wizards of Waverly Place in the Meg Tilly role! We'll have a soundtrack by Lady Ga Ga and Lil Wayne! Best part is the new ending - Alex is OK in the end and played by Will Smith!
-
i thought a Wheel of Time film had been announced then.
and leave BRUCE LEE alone you Hollywood cunts. -
Because it's sort of implausible that Bruce's character would just automatically know how to be a superspy because he knows martial arts. But this Rain character looks like a girl....a 10 year old little girl.
-
Make it so.

by shut the fuck up donny
It was called "A fistful of Yen."

instead of a worldwide competition on an island, changes it from an action adventure to an urban crime drama. That's a pretty big shift in tone. Why even name it after Enter the Dragon? This concept barely has anything in common with it.

There are cultural sensivities here to consider. Lee is Chinese American. This casting will be looked at as an insult to the Chinese. Only a Chinese actor should be cast in the role...and a real martial artist, at that--not one of these wire-fu folks. BTW...Ninja Assassin looks like a mess. I must say, I was impressed witht he practice session for the fight choreography, but what was captured on actual film is laughable. How this happened, after such intriicate work, who knows?
-
Now, that could use a remake. The trailer foor it was excellent, but the actual movie, horrible. Still, it has a great name, and is a legendary movie, by reputation, as it was one of the first, if not the first, martial arts film to be distributed in the United States.
-
Some movies are like Dark Side of The Moon. They got it right the first time.
-
Re-imagine this....Bad fucking idea!I hate that word anyway! Trendy, Hollywood pretentious bullshit! You can't use the word remake anymore? Re-imagine not rebooting any franchises for a while!
-
I'm fuck done with Hollywood. The nerve of reimagining a Bruce Lee movie. Fucking cocksuckers.
-

That's why we need Hollyweird. They're experts at crap.
To paraphrase Stallone in "Get Carter"
They do this for a living. -
We have agreed on a lot of subjects on this talkback, especially involving "Last AIrbender". But I must say we have to stop nitpicking between Asian nationalities. I just want an even playing field. Caucasian Actors often play different nationalities within the same race. English play French and so on. Same with African Americans playing Africans and such.I don't have a problem with Japanese playing Koreans or vice versa. It's only a political difference in most cases. Racial differences are far greater and insulting when one plays another. Let's not ask for anything more than what any other racial group does. AND for the RECORD again...Remaking ENTER THE DRAGON with a singing popstar is the stupidest fucking idea in the world.
-
No, there aren't.
-
remaking this with either JAA, or Donnie Yen would be much better and acceptable.
-
There's really no need for a remake. The only reason why a remake would be necessary is if the original property is generally unknown or underappreciated (like 3:10 to Yuma, which worked out fantastically), or if the original property is just plain bad.
Enter the Dragon is laughable at points and the characterization is sometimes awful, but it oozes with cheesy 70's charm that makes it just plain awesome. Heck, I was raised in the 90's and had no knowledge of geek stuff, but I watched Enter the Dragon and was amazed by three things: 1) the crazy blackspoitation imagery evoked by Jim Kelly, 2) the way that Bruce Lee made pure, unadulterated fighting look fatal and scary, and 3) Han. Han was one badass cat, straight out of a comic book.
Put simply, the need for a remake isn't there. Ane more likely than not, the end result will still be as campy and ridiculous as the original Enter the Dragon was--without the charisma of Lee and Kelly to carry the film--basically, awful. -
...of all time, and a watershed moment in martial arts culture, and somewhat of a coming out of China, and the Chinese people, that, in addition to Lee's work creating the tv series Kung-Fu, which he went uncredited for, as the show was stolen from him. Because of the nature of Lee's efforts in bringing Chinese culture to the world, especially the West, it, his efforts, should not be undermined. His work was very personal to him and his people in giving them back their pride and equality which many in the West denied them. The story of the new remake, as presented, will feature an FBI agent against a Shoalin Priest gone rogue??? Hello??? Picture a Shoalin being taken down by a South Korean--that will be read as an insult to not only the people of Hong Kong, but China as a whole. Now, Hollywood wants to do business in China--China being a nation of two billion people, many of them, probable movie goers, or at least, tv watchers who will see this film in aftermarket broadcasts, and they, the execs of Hollywood wish to insult them? There is a good chance that save for DVD bootlegs, that the government of China will not even allow this film to be shown, or distributed, in China due to it being viewed as an insult. Really, this is how many of these things are looked upon in Asia. For instance, the Chinese and Japanese largely have historical resentment toward each other...and you can bet that China...being a backer of North Korea, will not appreciate a South Korean being cast in a role for a remake of a film...that was made in Hong Kong by China's most famous son, Bruce Lee, a real martial arts expert, the best there ever was, and my hero. Speaking of that, Rain does not even rank as a martial arts champion? The insults abound here!!!
-
i'm fucking done with Hollywood and its remake-happy ways. YOU HEAR ME!? FUCKING DONE! there's absolutely NO reason to produce this abomination of a film. *points trembling finger* may the Lee Curse skull fuck the corpses of all involved! don't look, bitches. fucking FEEL that ghost cock violating your souls.

he might as well go all the way
-
Again I say even playing ground. How can we as Asian Americans (I'm assuming you are Asian like me) ask for something Caucasians and Blacks do not even do for their own Nationalities and ethnicities? Are we such a special race that we demand this kind of attention when other races don't? WASPs play Jews, Germans play English, English play Americans and French, African Americans play Africans (i.e. Don Cheadle who played an important an historical African figure in Hotel Rwanda). I do understand Americans in general think the Asians are all one ethnicity but I don't think casting like this is part of that misconception. At least they got the race right. BUT yes I do agree a pop singer in the role as iconic as this is very lame. HARRY WEINSTEIN you just said the stupidest thing ever on this site. Saying people who think ETD is the best martial arts movie are stupid just made you look like the biggest douchebag ever, considering ETD is held as the Greatest Martial Arts movie made by many critics and fans alike. I personally think Fist of Fury/Chinese Connection is better but have no problems with people thinking ETD is the best.
-
and then remake it.
-
only play one of the villians in the film. The scariest thing in his report on the news is that producers are looking for an American actor to replace Lee (Faraci alludes that they will probably cast a white dude). If that happens, the internet will collapse.
-
Nah,this is getting fucking ridiculous. Why?????? Why?????
-
With Britney Spears as Barney Ross. It can work...it can really work.

Enter the Dragon vs Fist of Fury vs Chinese Connection
by hey_kobe_tell_me_how_my_ass_tastes
FoF is the best 'Raw' unrefined Bruce. Chinese Connection is the best 'comedic' Bruce with some amazing kick ass action. But Enter the Dragon is the Iconic Bruce. It is the Gold standard of very martial arts movie that followed. There are movies that have more outstanding action - Tony Jaa's movies come to mind. But none are better than seeing Bruce on screen. And none is Better than Enter the Dragon. I predict King Tut/Poltegeist type curses on all those involved in this shit.
-
Am I the only one who thought this was a Game of Thrones reference? Probably...
-
Or have I just done a better job of ignoring her weekly updates? Probably the latter.
-
Don't compare remaking The Godfather with remaking Enter the Dragon. Enter the Dragon was a shitty movie wrapped around a godlike candy center of roughly 20 solid minutes of Bruce Lee kicking ass.
Take those 20 minutes out, and we're talking about a should-be-on-MST3K level of suck. And no, that's not "every martial arts movie."
People who claim Enter the Dragon is the "best martial arts movie ever" don't know what the FUCK they are talking about. -
Aug 05, 2009 8:44:01 PM CDT
So Galactc, what do you think is the best martial arts movie
by hey_kobe_tell_me_how_my_ass_tastes
Instead of hating on ETD, put up or shut up.
-
Bruce Lee meets Tony Robbins!
-
il just rewatch my blue ray enter the dragon, which looks beautiful by the way especially being from 1972
-
... produce an adaptation of Marvel's 'Master of Kung Fu' (which was basically a version of 'Dragon'). It has all the same elements as 'Dragon' plus the advantage of Fu Manchu as the big bad (if the 'M.O.K.F.' or 'Fu Manchu' rights aren't tied up). Just a thought.
-
Shoot the movie backwards.
I know what you're thinking. You're thinking that's a stupid idea.
But that's the film-making genius of it. -
It's kind of refreshing to see yet another Korean in this day in age command a lead role besides Jackie Chan and Jet Li... There are other Asian actors who need work too..
-
Not so much race. The Chinese feel that they have been attacked and undermined by groups like the Japanese...who notoriously, and viciously, attacked them for centuries. This is a national pride issue. There is a marked difference between that, and variations of race. I am attempting to educate Hollywood on these cultural issues which are very sensitive. If they fail to learn...they are doomed to keep making mistakes like what happened with "Memoirs Of A Geisha". You'll recall that casting blunder? Well, at least...Quentin Tarantino was smart enough to change Lucy Lu's character to a mixed race person in "Kill Bill", and play-up the cultural sensitivity issue. He did it because he is a well studied martial arts practitioner, and thus, is well aware of these matters, far and beyond his training. And no, I am not Asian, although I am of mixed race, and I have always loved the Asian people, as if I knew the culture from another life?I was raised a Buddhist...a martial artist, and a yogi, one who studied the culture out of a deep love for it, and its people. Bruce Lee made being human cool to me...and he made Asians--people who I already respect...equal to any other group...and far surpassing them, in many ways. China is 5,000 plus years old...and still standing, and proud. That says plenty about the Chinese people...and their brillance--a culture that can stand in existence and thrive no matter the challenge, or number of enemies. China is now within 1 year of having nuclear parity with the U.S. and is on the edge of overwhelming us economically. This is a people to be respected, not diminished. If we keep disrespecting them...we will live to regret it--or worse, we might not live to regret it. Trust me, this disrespect by Hollywood is not accidental, it is their way of occulting, diluting, and assimilating something great, and for all the wrong reasons--much like how they use to mock Asians in movies for comedy.Rain is fine, I don't dislike him. He can play another character, just not the character that Lee made famous. Give that to a Chinese actor who is a real...and uncommon martial artist...and not a wire-fu phony.
-
They do have work, the asian slave trade.
-
I saw Ninja Assassin, and it's all fucking CGI and stunt doubles. If only Chinese folklore were real and Bruce could return as a vampire ghost to beat the living shit out of pretty boy pretentious-named Rain. Rain?! Give me a fucking break. Pretentious fuck.
-
And the Godfather was just too long. And while we're at it, Citizen Kane was confusing and never really got to the point. And you are a humongous douche.
Enter The Dragon was a great film, not just a good martial arts movie. It told a great story and never attempted to be anything other than what it was, which was a fun action film, which showcased one of the best martial artists who ever lived. -
I'm talking about actors, how many slaves do you have tied up to a radiator in your basement...
-
Enter the Dragon was not only a great movie but every bit as influential as Seven Samurai. If Kurosawa's flick gets credit for creating such movie conventions as the hero sidebar and "heroes assemble" pieces how influential was Enter the Dragon which pretty much established iconography for the next 30 years of martial arts movies? Setting aside some of the most stunning action ever filmed Galactic is totally ignorant of some of the other HUGE innovations ETD introduced. Including the unheard of innovation of blending the 60s spy genre with martial arts. Let's not even mention the cultural impact ETD broke ground on with an Asian hero in a mainstream movie and the move towards realism in martial arts that was ENGENDERED singlehandedly by ETD's impact on western audiences and directors. Galactic your post is LOL, chaddyd got it right you're looking at one of the most seminal and (years later) a movie that still stands up 30 years later and you have no clue what you're looking at. It's literally like trying to explain Citizen Kane frame by frame to some noob who TOTALLY doesn't get it.
-
"Enter the Dragon" doesn't mean "Hey, there's a dragon! Let's enter it!" It's a stage direction. You know, like "Enter: Stage Left?" It means the Dragon is arriving to kick all kinds of ass.
-
These people eat dogs and fin sharks for fuck's sake. I could give a flying fucky-sucky if they get weepy when someone of slightly different asian origin plays Chinese.
-
Been a long time since a martial arts film played in theaters, could use my fix right about now, regardless of what kind of Asian it is...
-
He paved the way for Rain.
-
WHAT THE FUCK????????? they are remaking enter the dragon? THEY ARE REMAKING ENTER THE DRAGON???????????????????????????????????????????
MOTHERFUCKERS OF HOLLYWOOD,BURN IN HELL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
i gotta go count em.
