LOVELY BONES trailer has massive spoiler revealing Quint's stalking of the film's young lead!!!

Published at:  Aug 05, 2009 12:12:39 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... In all seriousness, you may want to skip the trailer as it does venture a tad into the 3rd act - and if you are spoiler free with this story, perhaps knowing that you'll see the movie based solely upon the name of the director... well, that's enough for me. But I watched it anyways... And there at the start in the bookstore, I figured out who the child murderer was. He's a large man in the background with a book, a scruffy beard and a distinguished nose! I know that's the guy that kills children... at the very least. Yup, that's Quint - who is probably going to be mortified to see himself hitting the trailer for LOVELY BONES - as everyone will think he's the murderer - they don't quite have the chalky M on his shoulder, but a little photoshop should fix that!

Click Here to watch Quint, the child stalking murderer!!! Well, at least I think that's what his character is!

I'm sure Marky Mark will be fine. I Heart Huckabees and The Departed are 2 movies with great performances by him. Of course he sucked in The Happening, but I think it's more the director. I think PJ will get a good performance out of him.

Hope it's just the trailer, but it looks like they've just turned the novel into a run-of-the-mill thriller (basically looks like 'Zodiac' with a bit of 'what dreams may come' supernatural stuff thrown in). I just thought the (decent, but way overrated) book was something completely different.

    ZombieHeathLedger: No and no.

    by playkins

    In Lovely Bones:

"Ghost of murdered girl helps the living find her killer?" Nope. Not what happens, not that explicitly. She more or less watches over how her family has come apart in the wake of her murder. Her father is the one obsessed with finding her (he isn't even sure she's dead until like halfway through the book).

"Killer gets his comeuppance at the end thus freeing the young girl's restless ghost to go on peacefully?" MMMNnnnnooooope. She's already there, not really drawn back or stuck. Not at all, not like you describe. At least, not in the book.

You've very clearly not read it, so why are you talking like you know?

As for getting murdered and becoming a ghost, well... there are tons of movies that do that. It's like saying that any film with a spaceship in it is the same.

Hard to judge the real story from the trailer

    by mortsleam

The trailer does make it seem as if finding the murderer is the plot of the movie. The book was all about Susie Salmon watching her family deal with her death from heaven. Kinda hard to show in a two-minute teaser. So of course they went with the "supernatural thriller" angle. Because people need to be spoon-fed exactly what they think they're getting, hence all the "it's the Ring crossed with The Vanishing" or whatever.

Zombie, your an idiot, if you read the book, you would know that the story is VASTLY different than any comparisons you made. In fact, the book never mentions religion.
Anywho, I have hopes for the movie, the book never had her helping find her killer, in fact, in the book she feels sorry for him as she watches him. He was almost a footnote.
All you tools comparing this to other movies, go read the book and have some faith in PJ, he seems too literal to let the meaning of the book slip by into a popcorn movie.

Unlike everyone else in the movie, she forgot it was a COMEDY. To use a quote George Harrison when he was talking about Madonna: "it's hard to make a comedy with someone who has no sense of humor". What I need to see is a moment where at the second of his death, Harvey sees Suzie standing over him, he recognized her and she says “I’m so sorry”, he asks “what for?” before she replies “because of where you’re going....” the ground starts to split around Harvey as flames rise up out of the cracks, he looks at Suszie as she finishes her sentence "....forever”. At that point he is dragged screaming into the fires of Hell where he will be tormented for eternity.

    by carlthormark1978

If we really want to talk about Heaven then wouldn’t it be logical to assume that it’s a non-linear plane of existence that has no beginning or end so, theoretically, when Suzie died her family would already be there with her (providing they never committed any mortal sins such as murder or suicide) and wouldn’t she also be able to drop in and out of what we perceive to be reality in a similarly non-linear fashion to see the death of her murderer and his eternal damnation into the fires of Hell?

Okay, just look at this trailer a couple of times...

    by vicenzov

Anything that takes Peter Jackson back to his Heavenly Creatures mentality and away from bombastic wannabe epic shit like King Kong is worth anticipating in my view. The actress cast as Susie Salmon is exactly the kind of weird, offbeat choice Kate Winslet must have seemed like back in 1996, and by the look of the visuala Lovely Bones is guaranteed to garner Oscar nominations in the Cinematography, Set Design and Visual Effects categories.

I do think Mark and Rachel look a little too young to be Susies parents, but overall the trailer looks fantastic and now on my list of must-see films.

    by carlthormark1978

Jackson goes out of his way to cast a bunch of well known actors (Sarandon, Marky Mark, Rachel Weisz, Stanley Tucci) for all the other major roles but he decides on this girl who was an unknown at the time? I'm not even a fan of Fanning's (I wanted her to die in War of the Worlds) but why not go for a high profile casting choice when there are familiar faces in every other role?

    by livingwater

.....too Christian in tone, too "made for TV", too many visual effects, too similar to a updated, saccharine "What Dreams May Come" and too lugubrious for audiences at Christmas time. Against Avatar it will be ignored. Peter's choice of content is desperate and shallow. Firstly, Hell never existed before Christians made it, it originated from hades, which was the underworld after death : not a place of torture. The whole repetitive cycle of judgement, torture, revenge is a very destructive ego cycle that really is a cause of many wars. We need to see nature for what it is, be in harmony with that, bring out the best from it and ignore the oppressive, ignorant pre-conceptions of heaven/hell that are derived from silly stories of desert peasants sold and forced on to people, by guilt, fear, violence and oppression for 2000 years. Not continue to promote this silly superstition as though it were somehow real. Give me a break........

exactly how much I loved the book all those years ago. I hoped the movie would just do it's own job, not just a book-to-film and it looks like it does. It looks like it has it's own character and focuses while still telling the story. That's a lot to get from a trailer but I can't wait to see this even more now - and that's a trailers job I guess

    by carlthormark1978

And I wasn't impressed with her in Atonement nor did I think much of that movie. Don't get me wrong, Fanning isn't much better but she's more well known then Ronan. You get why I'm saying this right? It doesn't make sense to me that Jackson would fill the movie with recognizable actors then put an unknown in a crucial role. My justification for Fanning is that Susie’s murder should be brutally shocking and what is more shocking, killing a worldwide famous actress or another girl who no one knows, outside some overrated film that she got nominated for. Anyway, well see, maybe The Lovely Bones will change my mind about Saoirse Ronan.

    by performingmonkey

It's a thought-provoking weepy look at how the death of a 14-year-old girl affects her family. The only tense moment is when the sister breaks into the killers house, and that's shown extensively in the trailer. Everything else is just the mom crying, the dad crying, the grandma crying, the killer crying and them all getting older. However, I'm looking forward to how Peter has done the heaven parts. Oh wait, we've seen that in the trailer too so there's now no reason to see the movie!!

They look much older than they should because they've had to cast actors in their 20s so they can be shown getting older later in the movie. You can tell even from the trailer that it doesn't translate well and may take people out of the movie when the guy in his 20s is still at school with the 14-year-old Susie and hitting on her. And her sister's supposed to be YOUNGER than Susie, and yet it's an actress in her 20s!

TALKBACKER WITHOUT A NAME, YOU FUCKING RETARD

    by zombieheathledger

No, shit for brains, I didn't read wiki, nor have I read the book. Nor do I have to, I am going solely by the information given in the trailer and given the information that the director has chosen to show (which is a lot), unless it's a total red herring certain similarities can be observed. I love how you fucking Jackson asslickers back up your arguments with "troll" accusations. I made an observation that TLB shared similar plot points to COG and I gave evidence to back up my theory. All you shitwits can come up with in response is "Troll!" fingerpointing and oh yeah, this gem, "No, it's not." Wow, you assholes belong on the Harvard debate team with that kind of sound reasoning. Does TLB have a murdered girl at it's center? Yes. Does she return as a ghost? Yes. Is solving her death integral to the plotline? Yes. These are irrefutable similarities. And then you idiots wanna broaden subject to render it moot (Matrix) when this comparison is wayy more specific then some general overview of machine vs. man theme. I can't stand you fucking dirtbags who suck up to Hollywood movies like it's your Momma's saggy titties. They aren't holy relics for Chrissakes. The AICN forum is not just solely for your fanboy gushing, stoopids, it's for FILM DISCUSSION. All I did was put it out there that there are similarities and then you say, "Oh well, you could say that about a lot of movies." Yes, you are right. I could. And I'm saying it about this one and it's similarities to both the plot of CHILD OF GLASS and the heaven concept/effects of both WHAT DREAMS MAY COME and CONTACT, both points have been mentioned in TLB talkbacks here before so it's not just me who's noticed. Oh, but I guess everyone else who has pointed that out is also a "troll." Listen, if you obvious film neophytes want to believe that Jackson is some untouchable god who comes up with completely original ideas than that's your problem. Just STFU and stick to your gushings and let the grown ups have serious film discussion as is our wont here. Next time, either come with logic and evidentiary debating points or swallow your tongues you pedantic sycophants, insulting, sycophants.

Again, you don't refute my points (because you can't) and instead you go for the asinie retort of because I haven't read wiki or the book then I can't notice similarites given just the information given BY THE DIRECTOR in the trailers which are after all SCENES FROM THE FUCKING MOVIE ITSELF. This is such a fucking retarded argument I can't even believe you are making it. Further, I said "unless the trailer is a red herring" which I guess you don't know the definition of a "red herring" because you are a moron, but that means exactly what you said, that unless Jackson's trailer is intentionally "deceptive" (but I don't think it is). So either refute my points or STFU. Does it deal with a murdered girl? Does the murdered girl return as a ghost? Is bringing closure to the girl's murder integral to the plotline? Yes, yes, and yes. Guess what? That's just like CHILD OF GLASS. And in the non-everyone-who-says-something-other-than-fanboy-gushing-must-be-a-troll world, these are called SIMILARITIES. And they are much more specifice than overall generalities like the man vs. machine theme that you pulled out of your ass about the Matrix. Your debating skills are weaksauce. Tap out, dipshit.

ZombieHeathLedger: I've given you PLENTY of reasons.

    by playkins

I've already refuted your ideas about the movie and told you how it's different. Editing can do a lot, chum. Just look at Annie Hall, which was originally a MURDER MYSTERY before becoming a romantic comedy if you want to know what editing can do. Not hard, considering you're only dealing with about two minutes of footage.

And yeah, I know what a red herring is, my simpleton friend. THAT'S WHY I POINTED OUT THAT YOU ADMITTED KNOWING NOTHING ABOUT THE STORY.

How can you acknowledge that something might be a red herring while pointing out you've gotten all your information from that same thing (the trailer)? You're contradicting yourself, and in no more than two successive sentences.

And THIS part: "Is solving her death integral to the plotline?"

You keep saying this, and I'm going to tell you again: THE STORY IS NOT ABOUT SOLVING HER MURDER. It is chiefly about a family dealing with their daughter's disappearance while the girl watches down from her personal heaven and learns to let go of her former life. THERE IS NO MURDER MYSTERY. THE AUDIENCE KNOWS WHO KILLED HER. The closest thing is a father that is obsessed with finding out the truth about his daughter, and not in a cliche "mystery" way. It's ALL EMOTIONAL.

And THIS: "Does the murdered girl return as a ghost?" There's no other way to rebute this, SHE DOES NOT FUCKING RETURN AS A GHOST!!!!! You're WRONG. YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT!!!!!!!!! SHE IS WATCHING DOWN FROM HEAVEN THE WHOLE TIME!!!!!!!

Your claim that I'm ignoring your points is bullshit. Fuck you and your dumb ass presupposition. You're catcalling for an argument, and everyone that has actually read Lovely Bones knows that you're a moron and are COMPLETELY wrong.

In addition, the fact that you think "The Matrix" borrowed less than "some general overview of machine vs. man theme" proves you never read any William Gibson, either.

I'm done, not being trolled by you anymore. So, do you see how I'm refuting your points? I'm clearly giving you examples of where you're mistaken. If you cant recognize this, i have nothing more to say.

Playkins and Talkback WNN - JUST ADMIT YOU LICK BALLS

    by zombieheathledger

Seriously. STFU. First of all, I have since read the wiki just to see if the trailer is a red herring and no, the trailer is not a red herring a la ANNIE HALL, in fact it's very straight forward so your point is moot. Plus, I've read the talkbacks describing the movie and the trailer is pretty much straight forward to what everyone has said about it there as well so again your "hey the trailer could be misleading" point you are trying so desperately (and failing) to make is that the trailer is different from the movie is dead wrong and moot. And I knew you were going to dodge with the 'solving' of the murder quote from my post that's why I clarified what I said in my subsequent post to: Is bringing CLOSURE to the girl's murder integral to the plotline? And the answer to that is YES. And THAT is like CHILD OF GLASS. And if she is DEAD and she is watching down from heaven and the trailer CLEARLY shows her on the Earthly plane no matter how many hairs you want to split, calling her a "ghost" is still pretty fucking accurate. She doesn't need sheets and chains to be a ghost you FUCKING IDIOT. Remember the Patrick Swayze movie? Where he died and still roamed around on the Earthly plane? What was that called again? Oh, yeah, GHOST!! You idiot! And yes, I have read Gibson numbnuts, but the specific points mentioned here are not akin to the specific similarities between Gibson's work, or Asimov's for that matter, as it pertains to the Matrix or or how it applies here. Now go fuck your mother.

And Talkbacker with no name, thanks for agreeing to my points about the similarities, if you had just let that admission exist from the start maybe you wouldn't have gotten your panties in a bunch. Game, set, and match, dickheads. I'm guessing none of you have seen CHILD OF GLASS, right?

The guy isn't Tolkien even if he can wear Tolkien's shoes for a miles. Stealing is no compensation for talent. I walked out of the screening of Brain Dead in his theater.... sick minded junk. He is an amateur affecting greatness that is why he has to steal and reference. There is no real talent, and the studios are waking up to that. Plus the fact that he plays political games BIG TIME behind the scenes. THERE IS ONE AND ONE ONLY ONLY REAL REASON he made this film...........he and I both know it......and this talkback is the only voice I get....... is because of a certain concept it contains... ....STOLEN FROM AN ORIGINAL SCRIPT I WROTE. I am not getting into it. Not a nice guy. He needs to retire and get paid by a VFX industry New Line created, and that he completely doesn't understand.

    I'm not pretending anything...

    by livingwater
sorry for the typo darthvedder81 and Mr Gorilla have it right he only did this film to piss off an ex employee who wrote a better script than him, and the other script contains some similar themes.... but PJ isn't into it. Fighting with the art director over heaven, is very sadly typical of this director's greedy, mean spirited on-set games. Maybe he should take up rugby ?

    by playkins

Now you're insulting my punctuation. Talk about grasping for straws. Can I insult your paragraph structure and lack of line breaks now?

Pardon for my impatience with dealing with such an obtuse fucktard.

Now you're saying this is like "Ghost"? All while still freely admit to knowing nothing about the original story... Mindbogglingly dumb.

"the trailer CLEARLY shows her on the Earthly plane no matter how many hairs you want to split, calling her a "ghost" is still pretty fucking accurate."

See, THIS is the kind of stuff that proves your ignorance. This quote is perfect proof of why you're wrong in judging by the trailer. She's not a ghost. She's never a ghost. She's NEVER on the "Earthly plane". What you're seeing in the trailer are (from what I can tell) the thoughts/imagination/whatever of the characters that are thinking about Susie Salmon, what she experienced. Visual manifestations of the other characters, NOT Susie's ghost. You're seeing a storytelling device. Calling her a GHOST is about as inaccurate as you could get. THAT'S what makes this a unique story. It never degrades into a ghost movie- a fact you're blatantly unaware of.

And don't worry, my dad won't be in the way for the rimjob. He's busy slipping his salami in your mom's stinky twat.

The killer's ending needs to be different to the book

    by performingmonkey

In the book it feels so anti-climactic. Maybe it SHOULD, you don't want to give him a completely redeemed end or anything because, when all's said and done, he raped and murdered Susie, but his book death is almost comedic. He falls off his bike down a slope, or something like that, into a tree and dies. Maybe that's not right and I'm forgetting it but it's something LIKE that. I was like 'wtf??' The emotional material is all laid out there for the actors to take hold of. Sarandon will be fine but I'm not sure about Rachel Weisz doing an American accent and Mark Wahlberg just...acting in general (he wasn't Jackson's first choice, they had to fire the first guy after certain disagreements apparently), My guess is that Saoirse Ronan could be up for another Oscar and maybe Sarandon. Let's forget about Wahlberg, I don't think he has it in him. Rachel Weisz possibly, though the role is boring. Btw it's listed as being 139 minutes, and it doesn't even come out in the UK till January!!

Actually, Playkins, don't be too hard on that Zombie-guy

    by the curious dr humpp

His reaction is one that I expect (and fear) many others to have after watching this trailer. Especially those that haven't read the novel -- and you can't really blame them. It's just the way the story and concept of the film is presented in the trailer. Even though PJ shows his scrawny face introducing the teaser, I for one have trouble believing that this marketing-montage is his handywork. Knowing PJ's rabid love for his source material, I'm convinced he would have cut this differently.

So blame it on the marketing guys over at Dreamworks / Paramount for presenting this film as 'a tense thriller about a murdered girl hunting down her killer from beyond the grave, with some fantasy elements thrown in'. So yeah, I can understand how people would think this is like What Dreams May Come meets Ghost meets The Ring or something. When in fact, if you had to compare this to something, it would be more like What Dreams May Come meets Ordinary People or maybe In the Bedroom. It's an observational story about a family dealing with a sudden tragedy and (SPOILERISH) ultimately falling apart because of it.

I actually expected a very different trailer for this film. You know, with the 'from Academy Award winner Peter Jackson', 'starring Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronan, Academy Award nominee Mark Wahlberg, Academy Award Winner Rachel Weisz, Academy Award Winner Susan Saradon', etc. title cards interspersed with dramatic shots of the family dealing with the tragedy. Well, maybe they'll do that with the second trailer.
