Mean Magazine's OLDBOY Cinemash Pits Oh Dae-Su Against AIG Executives!

Published at:  Aug 04, 2009 2:08:46 AM CDT

Beaks here...

Imagine a version of OLDBOY where Oh Dae-su is transformed into an anti-corporate crusader, and you've got the basic idea of what Milo Ventiiglia and Kashy Khaledi have done with their Cinemash of Park Chan-wook's 2003 masterpiece. This is the third Cinemash short we've featured on the site, and this is probably the most ambitious in that they've gone to impressive lengths (on a nothing budget) to re-stage one of the most mindblowingly brilliant fight sequences in recent memory. The results are pretty damn impressive. Here's what Mean Magazine's Khaledi had to say about the shoot:

"Milo came in the same day we were shooting the "Point Break" Cinemash
with Human Giant/Reno 911! and we had little time to prepare as the two
episodes were overlapping. The day pretty much depended on whether or
not he could come in, bang out 78 moves in 45 minutes of rehearsal time,
otherwise, the piece simply would not work. With the assistance of stunt
coordinator Luk LaFontaine, whose work you can see in everything from
"Iron Man" to "The Karate Kid", he came in and nailed what you see here
in 3 takes. Incidentally, he got it on the first take and the last two
were arbitrary. That and he managed to take some beautiful black and
white photography somehow of us at work. I'm convinced he showed up as
his Heroes character. He's insane."

LOOKS LIKE MEAN MAGAZINE IS BUYING PUBLICITY....

    by carlthormark1978

Probably in order to boost their failing publication. How do I know its failing? Devin Faraci wrote for it and any magazine, or website, that would employ that bloated, pretentious asswipe is no doubt mismanaged and bleeding money (the only reason CHUD hasn’t gone under Is because Nunziata was ordered by his wife to get a real job) nor is it a coincidence that Faraci himself wrote a front page blowjob for his old employers on CHUD when they released that terminally unfunny Cheech & Chong video the other week. This Oldboy spoof has about as much entertainment value as being Harry Knowles proctologist. The best part is that Faraci doesn’t even know that I was the one who sent him that angry letter posing as a member of Avatars crew. Sucker.

Not much of a mash up

    by bass ackwards

Its just basically a recreation. I can give em credit for the time I'm sure it took, but its just a bunch of guys redoing Oldboy, with less, well, less everythng. Effect would have been the same had they just redubbed the original Oldboy scene.

Hollywood should be banned from adapting anything

    by interneti

Unless it's being made by the person that wrote or made it, it is usually garbage. Exhibit A: Iron Man- Success, made by Marvel. Exhibit B: Street Fighter, Chun-Li, not made by Capcom, MASSIVE FAILURE.

    umm, no...

    by superfinn

...this isn't a "mashing" of anything, i.e. it contains nothing of the original "Oldboy". It's just a recreation, and a weak one at that. I would expect this from 14-year olds on Youtube, doesn't Ventimiglia have something better to do?

A mash up is when you combine two things

    by garbageman33

Usually, it refers to bad rap songs being combined with bad nu metal songs. Not sure how that applies to this. It's not a parody either, in that they aren't lampooning it in any way. Which means it's just an incredibly bad imitation.

    Awful...just awful

    by mr.stiggs

I'm sorry but these shorts are really terrible. There is absolutely no humor or insight to be found in any of these "mash-ups". They are a complete waste of time, resources and "talent". On a seperate note...just go ahead and hire Joseph Gordon-Levitt for the role of the Joker in the next Batman flick right now.

I liked the Ben Kingsley/Minor Threat one

    by s0nicdeathmonkey

and the Cheech and Chong one. This one didn't quite work, but I think the point of these videos is to show that it's a magazine about both pop culture and politics. I wouldn't know because I have never picked it up...but it's sort of clever if I'm right.

He was always Heath Ledger 0.1 Never the real thing. It would just be a bad imitation.
