TIMECRIMES' Nacho Vigalondo puts a hit on American cinema with GANGLAND!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. If you haven't gotten a chance to give Nacho Vigalondo's low budget, entertaining as hell awesome time travel flick TIMECRIMES a watch by now... well, shame on you. Fix that. You'll thank me later.
For those who have seen it, they'll share my excitement in seeing Nacho going into development on his next flick. According to the super awesome Borys Kit (thanks for lending me your power cord during Comic-Con, dude) at Hollywood Reporter Nacho is working with Mandate Pictures and Steve Zaillian (who was already trying to set up a US TIMECRIMES remake) to get his new project on our screens soon. (Although, Mr. Kit is mistaken in that TIMECRIMES premiered at Fantastic Fest, not Sundance).
It's about video game developers who promise the most realistic game ever released, called GANGLAND, and I assume the research dips a little too far into the real, dangerous underworld and these geeks have to somehow get out alive.
Vigalondo is a mad genius, people! Thank God he's getting his next movie going! This is great news. What do you folks think?

What's going on?

After watching it on DVD I told my girlfriend she should check it out even though it's not "her kind of movie". She wound up waking me up in the middle of the night just to rave about how fucking awesome it was. Scary, intense, intriguing, and most importantly hilarious. Vigalondo is definitely one to follow.

Made on a shoestring budget. Nothing extraordinary, but an enjoyable watch.

didn't know what to expect going in, beyond that it had a fair amount of hype to live up to, plus I was sort of predisposed to thinking it would be another typical crap-ass timetravel movie. Fortunately, it was fantastic.
For anyone who hasn't seen it, it's currently available on Netflix Watch Instantly as well (and fortunately in Spanish with English subtitles). -
I found it massively stupid in a way that pulled me right out of the movie, where I stayed for the entire running time. Victim Girl had great boobs, but that's pretty much the highlight. There's a point very early on where the lead character does something idiotic and pointless, for no reason at all, when simply not doing that thing would have solved the whole problem. It was so obvious and stupid I just couldn't suspend disbelief from that point on. Here's hoping this new one doesn't suck, but based on what I've seen so far I'm not holding my breath.

I liked Time Crimes a lot, but I loved all of Nacho's short films. He's hilarious and original and I want him to have a long career and numerous credits someday.
-
I rented that baby from Netflix and was happy to see it lived up to the hype

Hasn't this premise been done a million times already?
by lockesbrokenleg
Hell, it's seen on SYFY nearly every weekend.

This could be right out of a "Curb Your Enthusiasm" episode!

Larry sees his old friend Nacho on the other side of the street and yells: "Hey, Nacho!" Suddenly an angry hispanic woman stands behind him, accuses him of being racist and a liar, because nobody has a name like "Nacho"!

If they could use their knowledge of gangs, their academic knowledge of weaponry & general other "using your brains" gambits to get outta dodge, this could be fun, & not Judgment Night.
-
you can still make a good movie with a low budget.
-
Saw it at Horrorthon in Dublin this year. Definite blast. Never figured out the time travelling logic though, it is messed up!
-
wasting any more time on movies made by a dude named nacho.
-
Nachos (the food) is unheard of in Spain
-
i've actually not seen anything by "nacho" so i was just being a dick. ha.

While attending the Sergio Leone edition of the Rolling Roadshow. Super nice guy. Good filmmaker, too. Quite enjoyed Timecrimes.
-
After seeing Primer and several other time travel movies, I pretty much knew what was around the corner the entire time. It was well made, but it didn't really surprise me once the entire run of the movie.
-
not good at all.
-
felt inconsistent throughout. It was both dark, and smart, but then cheesy and campy all at the same time.

Rent PRIMER instead - now that is something brilliant!

Blows Timecrimes away in the time travel genre - and was probably made for much less. Awesome film!

Guy kills a innocent woman to save his wife from a fate he set into motion by being a complete asshole. Good movie, yes. But the hero is such a dickhead I wanted to jump into the screen and punch him in the nads.
-
Anyone watch this show? Man, I never knew there were so many gangs, and all hell-bent on destroying society. After you watch any episode, you'd think that every other person in America was a gang-member waiting to cut your throat. I want that ''AHHHHH' sound they use for every scene change as a ring tone for my cell phone.
-
WTF? The entire thing was a ridiculous fantasy of convenience. But the whole tragic time-loop was a mini-mindfuck. And the lady was hot. Other than that, it was kinda goofy.
-
Not sure why Quint thinks so highly of the director and Timecrimes... but the movie was total garbage. From the very first scene you knew how the entire movie was going to play out.
SPOILER***
From the very first scene, the way the scenes were stages and shot they telegraphed that the antagonist was him. Plus there was nothing special about his filmmaking. Maybe the reason I have such a bad taste in my mouth for the filmmaker is the 'behind the scenes extra' on the DVD of the making of the movie. The guy comes off like a douche.
The concept of GANGLAND sounds terrible as well.

I am cartwheels over everything he's done. LOVE 7:35 de la manaña. Será el café, será el pan tostada... and I CRACKED UP endlessly over his short about the UFOs and how they had to tape over their vacation trip to Turkey for the big momentous occasion. Loved Cronocrímines and kind of irritated someone feels it needs to be remade, but super-feliz to hear he's doing more in "Hollywood." Yay, Nacho!
(NIMROD is totally the name to make fun of. Seriously! His name is NIMROD! I can't help cracking up! I want a job there just so I can say "who was the NIMROD who set up that shot?" "Who was the NIMROD who did that?" lololol. I'd be fired in 30 seconds. "Who was the NIMROD who hired that idiot?" Lol. Sorry.... I digress... -
Steveola, I can't beliveve you had to actually see the first scene to figure out the entire story. I had the entire plot figured out out as soon as I heard the title (actually I had most of the story figured out as soon as I knew the first letter of the title was "T". I just needed the rest of the letters to figure out a few minor plot points.

Timecrimes= random machine in the woods? As usual, americans dis
by spanishboy
If you know something about Spain, you know that North is full of woods and it's very logical that a secret project (in the case of the movie, a fiction about a time travel company) it will be in the woods, as a private installation.
But, North americans don't understand how Spain is and they think that all works as it does in its country. It's a typical attitude towards foreign countries and foreign cultures.... -
(All North Americans should be required to spent at least a week drinking red wine and Coke in Spain. Then, and only then will they understand that it's perfectly logical to put a time machine in the woods in NW Spain...)
-
Yes, the main character is a douche but the movie is very entertaining. As soon as I finished watching the DVD I went to the special features and watched it again but this time in "real time" order where you can see (SPOILERS) Hector 1,2, and 3 in the same sequence (ie Hector 2 positions the girl by the tree while Hector 1 looks at the forest with his binoculars while hector 3 watches that hidden behind a tree). It was cool!
