TRON LEGACY Director Joseph Kosinsky To Direct OBLIVION From Producer David Fincher!?!?

Published at:  Jul 30, 2009 9:51:16 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Director Joseph Kosinsky, who is currently toiling away on TRON LEGACY, may next take on OBLIVION - a film based on his own concept. David Fincehr would produce along with Barry Levine, and David Morrison. The concept would also be developed as an "illustrated novel."

OBLIVION's story...

...centers on a battle-damaged soldier who, assigned to a desolate planet after a court-martial, patrols the bleak landscape in an effort to destroy the last vestiges of a primitive alien race. When a mysterious traveler arrives unexpectedly, their lives become inextricably linked as they are forced to question everything they know about this world and themselves.,/b>

...reveals THR HERE.

If you missed the posting of TRON LEGACY's Comic-Con material over the weekend, you can find the film's mighty impressive concept reel HERE. I've watched it somewhere between 50 and 5,000 times by now and feel like Chris Rock having addiction seizures in NEW JACK CITY:

Nothing special about the PC Game Oblivion

    by ravenloff

When I saw the post's title I thought the same thing. Then I stopped to think about it. There's really nothing worth making a movie about. I liked the game and its innovative gameplay, but it's a pretty generic fantasy setting.

Fallout, on the other hand (from the same game studio), now THERE'S a movie waiting to happen.

Can we dispense with comics and toys for a while, though, and go back to the mountain of great un-cinema'd sci-fi out there? Dan Simmons' Illium/Olympos comes to mind, along with Stirling's Island In The Sea Of Time trilogy (talk about epic) among others.

So many "Human Imperialists in Spaaaaace!" movies

    by greggers

It seems to me that every other science fiction movie coming down the pike is about human military imperialists are kicking the shit out of some peaceful alien race. AVATAR, some computer animated thing that came out recently, I think DISTRICT 9 veers into this territory, and now this OBLIVION thing. Jesus Christ how many times do have to see intergalactic retreads of DANCES WITH WOLVES? I get it Hollywood: We suck!
Could this be some sort of creative pressure release necessitated by the failure of so many Iraq war movies? Or just another avenue of expression that would be happening even if those films had found an audience?

    by immortal_fish

Read the Pocket Guide to the Empire and you'll find that everyone is a decendant of the elves, even the dwarves, orcs, and humans. The cycle of the moon during conception determines how animalistic a Khajiiti will be once born, ranging from humanoid in appearance to large mounts that walk on all fours. Abandoned steam technology. The Ayleids.Does any of this sound like a Tolkein retread? Really?

Whenever I read something like "they are forced to question everything they know about this world and themselves" in a plot synopsis, it seems like a clear indication that we can expect something along the lines of "they're in a virtual world" or "everyone is robots."

a major component of the plot of Outlander, which is an excellent sci-fi action flick by the way. Still though, it could be really good. It all comes down to the actual execution of the idea.
