USA Renews BURN NOTICE & ROYAL PAINS!!

Published at:  Jul 29, 2009 3:38:00 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

USA is bringing back its two highly rated summer series, “Burn Notice” and “Royal Pains,” for fourth and second seasons, respectively.

“Pains,” the medical dramedy hourlong starring Mark Feuerstein as a physician to The Hamptons’ wealthy, is apparently already outperforming “Burn.”

Both Thursday-night series helped USA establish itself as cable’s top-rated channel this month and in 2008’s second quarter.

I've enjoyed Burn Notice from the first episode. Tricia Helfer didn't hurt improving the view last season...glad to see they're going to continue bringing me my favorite escapist spy fantasy for at least one more season.

someone said something along the lines of how awful the two male leads on royal pains were.
    And that's it right there
Can't stand either of those guys.
They're both too smug, too self deserving
They wear their entitlement like bling
The actors and characters don't even try

Herc is very narrow minded and stuck up. In his head the only good shows ever made or that ever will be made are those by Joss Whedon and Ron Moore. Doesn't matter how good everything else is. That's why he disses Supernatural even though it's awesome on a consistent basis and appeals to the geek crowd.
Not many shows like this (or any for that matter) are on the air right now, let alone survive past their first season. Who cares about Supernatural if we can get a Dollhouse TB everyday? Or a TB for a show by Tim Minear that's surely gonna get canceled after a handful of episodes? Maybe Herc's bitter that Firefly got canceled so early and didn't get Buffy or Angel status he thinks it deserved?
Maybe Herc would love Supernatural if nobody else watched it or if a lot of people on here hated it with a passion, and the show got cancelled? Maybe then Herc would start loving it like the rest of us? SPN is just not obscure enough for Herc to love, simple as that.

Burn Notice, the only thing to watch in Summer

    by lostbat

Don't understand the networks.. Fill up the winter season with so many TV series. We can't watch that all, even with Tivo!! So much quality TV getting canceled because we simply don't have the time to watch it.... Look at the p2p download rates of some good TV series that have been canceled. Networks wake up!! We are also watching TV in summer!! A few more summer series couldn't hurt!!

    by renonevada2000

I really didn't want to like ROYAL PAINS at first because the basic premise was such an obvious knock-off of BURN NOTICE- Take a guy who is one of the best at what he does but restrain him from doing it in an official capacity, relocate him to a glamorous location where he can still use his skills and give him a male/female backup team. That said, the series is slowly growing on me as they are beginning to reveal a larger story arc.

    Royal Pains on Hulu

    by preciousroy

I think a lot of people might really hate Royal Pains the first time they see it because of the formulaic relationships. We know Hank and Jill's relationship is gonna get tested by his ex-fiancé at some point, to much collar-pulling uncomfortableness; we know by the way that Evan and Divya fight, they are destined for some steamy sack time that she'll regret and he'll be emotionally wrecked over. What I didn't expect was that I actually like the characters, despite the scenarios not exactly being unique, and I like the cast, too. I don't get USA anymore, so I catch it on Hulu.

    by evilwizardglick

I found it a bit disturbing that Hank wanted to associate with the young male rich Hemophiliac kid even after the kids father told him to get lost.
Really a young emotionally vulnerable male pursued by an older male in a position of authority. That is textbook.
Maybe the subtext wasn't intentional. Then again with the NAMBLA crowd who knows.

    Burn Notice *is* great...

    by phimseto

...but, like Lost and BSG, it needs a plan about where its overall arc is going, when certain beats are going to happen, and how it is all going to end. I hate saying this because Matt Nix must be loving this great breakthrough hit he has, but there is such a danger of milking this thing to death and leaving people with a very poor impression of the show.

    by phimseto

Michael's attempts to get unburned do represent an arc, especially considering how the characters and relationships (particularly Michael and Fiona) are tied to how that storyline is developed.

An important lesson in television is that shows tend to lose significant steam and creative energy when their big hooks go away. Moonlighting went to hell after Maddie and David slept together, the A-Team frittered away after they stopped having to flee the military, and the X-Files lost its way after they had gotten past a certain point and just started tacking on stuff.

The overarching Burn Notice story may not be the primary thing, a la BSG or Lost, but it is the backbone of the show and it's a driving force for character development. That deserves (and, IMO, requires) a sense of direction and some kind of plan.

I can't understand why more people watch it over the vastly better, more interesting Burn Notice. RP is just ANOTHER doctor show. How many shows on TV are there about spies? None that I can think of. There was MI5, but I don't think it's on and that wasn't a US production. Plus I really *really* dislike the lead actor for Royal Pains, he's just weird looking and he's not that great of an actor.

TO BE A TALKBACKER (Lessons from Michael Weston)

    by yackbacker

When you're a talkbacker, you've got nothing. No cash, no credit, no job history. You're stuck in whatever talkback you left open from your last web session. You post about whatever Massawyrm sends your way. You talk to whoever is online at the time: a post-happy Pennsy ("I love Kristen Bell!"), an old standby ("Damn you Michael Bay!"), and some guy named "Dickblood" too. Bottom line- until you turn off your computer and start exercising, you're a talkbacker.

    do mine eyes deceive me?

    by so-crates

or does the majority of a talkback *actually* like something?
What is the world coming to?
And yes, Burn Notice does indeed rule. The number of ways I would willingly let Fiona harm me physically......

    Burn Notice

    by smokingrobot

Is pretty routine, by-the-numbers hourly tv. Jeffrey Donovan is NOT a lead actor. He was good as the Christian killer on Law & Order. (Yes, if there's a white, Christian man on Law & Order, you can bet he's the killer).

    I concur: Burn Notice Rocks

    by criticalbliss

It's one of the few non-HBO/Showtime series I watch religiously. It's about time it got some love. The Magnum P.I. comparisons are warranted. We need more shows like this.
    All hail Bruce Campbell.

Burn Notice is lots of fun

    by axel fff

Nice Miami setting, good characters, good premise. Sometimes the episodes are little too formulaic. And sometimes you can see the writers trying to do something "completely different" and that doesn't always work well, either. Like the episode with the Rain Man guy who thought people were aliens. I don't know how many more seasons I would want to see. Four might be pushing it. Hope Burn Notice can find a way to keep it interesting if it goes past season 4.

FINALLY - AICN get's noticin' Burn Notice.!

    by workshed

Too bad you missed the first two series of one of the best shows to come out of the US in a long time. I have got so many of my friens here in the UK into this show. We wait with baited breath every Friday morning for the download to become available. It's great and for Bruce Campbell fans a double dose of fried gold. Jeffrey Donovan should be a BIG star. I just can't believe that after all your hype about the terrible LOST and HEROES you're finally realising where the good stuff is.

  • p.s. Does anyone think Strickler is a good guy or a bad guy.? Or both.? I thought they'd placed Harold Ramis in a time machine at first.! And after watching BN does anyone else feel they could single-handedly use some of the techniques to take down some bad guys.? There's a crack dealr on my street - I'm thinking of giving him the Weston treatment. Oh, and the last few weeks have been truly excellent entertainment.

ev1ldead - if you love Brucey...

    by workshed

...you got to watch more than the damn pilot. Once this show gets it's claws in you... You really do get to love the characters. I was a bit so-so on Fiona at first but she's an essential part of the show/team. Give it a proper shot and buy the first two series on DVD. It's the best thing BC has done since Bubba. Call me 'Workshed'.!

If they took the Pains to

    by the mcpoyle clan

ditch the male leads, it would be a better show. Campbell Scott slumming it as the phony Russian is kinda sad to see; I thought he was a better actor than that. The ladies are ok, but I get the brunette mixed up with Lou's ex-hooker fiance from Rescue Me.

Yes, if Pains ditched the male leads...

    by allykatd

I might even watch because the few times I have watched it was an okay show. But UGH, watching those two guys is awful Not good casting choices. And really, with all the out-of-work actors, that's the best they could do? They did a good job with the females, why such a crappy job with the guys?

    Burn & Psych

    by deandome

Actually, I find the arc(s) in Burn Notice tiring & distracting compared to the stand-alone 'helping-people' eps. THOSE are what the show's about..I don't get why showrunners these days think shows need arcs (same w/The Mentalist). Psych rocks, though I was hoping for more Amanda Pays w/Corbin relationship they were setting up before they brought in the annoying Cybill Shephard arc. And I miss the Little Shaun & Gus cartoons they used to have...and I LOOOVE Maggie Lawson!!! I even sat through an utterly craptastic "Killer Hair" on Lifetime (the concept actually had legs, but the writing simply sucked a bag of dicks).

Burn Notice Intriguing / Royal Pains light weight fun.

    by leftfoot

Burn Notice's over all situation is becoming less believeable (if it ever was) as time goes by. I hope the series doesn't cop out and at some point in the future claim all this was a undercover assignment for Micheal.
Early in the series I thought there were implying that Sam was Mike's real dad. Huge amount of tension between and his 'real' dad (his dad put that scar on his face). Maybe the conflict was that Mom fooled around. The show has implied that she worked in intelligence somehow in the past. There is such a difference between Mike and his brother, maybe that implies different dads.

Royal Pains is a product designed for economic hard times. Two ernest witty likeable guys end up living in a mansion of the super rich because of a twist of fate.
Summer fun on so many levels. The episode where Argentine surgeon snuck a GPS chip into a woman during a boob job. And the old pacemaker power source starting leaking radiation... It was truly a killer boob job. Now that was funny and interesting and bordered on science fiction. I hope.
I don't know anything about The Hamptons. But, it's hard to believe an island with so many ultra rich people has one crap hospital available.

    Burn Notice Conspiracy (spoilers ahoy)!

    by phimseto

A friend of mine recently mentioned that their pet theory dating back to season one is that Fiona has been watchdoging Michael since moment one. I remember thinking it sketchy myself that she was there, but as the show fell into a kind of formula, it certainly went out of my mind. After last night's episode (which ended with Fiona leaving him high and dry and supposedly getting out of Miami), I am convinced that he is absolutely right.

Here's my benchmark: if next week's cliffhanger episode has anything to do with making a "Fiona or Strickler" choice, then she's absolutely a nogoodnik. Whatever Strickler represents is antithetical to the interests of whoever is controlling Fiona, and moving aggressively to remove him (via her) would show their hand. Of course...it's a plot device that would be overly elaborate, as the guy hides in plain site and could easily be eliminated in a way that would leave Michael with nothing but dead ends.

But then I suppose that wouldn't be good television...

    Phimseto interesting idea

    by leftfoot

Phimseto I always felt like there was something basically off and unlikeable about her character. I thought it was just that the perpetual high heels and short skirts gave her a 'Charlie's Angels' quality.
But, looking back, she was literally lying next to him when he woke up in Miami. Coincidence? In this kind of story telling anything can turn out not to be random or a coincidence.
