Hey folks, Harry here with this final week of JULY’s report. I hope you enjoy. As usual click the pics and titles and you’ll be whisked to Amazon for purchasing and mass information. If you do purchase – it’ll help keep the column coming. Thanks a lot and enjoy this week’s peeks.

GREEN LANTERN: FIRST FLIGHT

I did a full individual review of this back a couple of weeks ago - Click Here to read that! At Comic Con Thursday night – a little over 4,000 Green Lantern fans swore the Green Lantern Oath – watched this film and exploded in applause afterwards. The reason? It fucking rocks! Now let’s just hope the live action version does it even better.

FAST & FURIOUS

Here’s my full review of FAST & FURIOUS. I really like this film, wish they had gotten any of the romance right. As really that was what the film really lacked. On BLU – the film looks gorgeous, sounds in-fucking-sane and honestly the extras are crazy. The same kinds that we gearhead FAST AND FURIOUS geeks have been playing with so far. This completes the set – but due to the box office of this installment – you can bet you’ll have another to add, that’s if you’ve been collecting them all.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: THE COMPLETE SERIES (Blu Ray)

Not sure if this set is economically sound. At a suggested retail of $349.98… that’s crazy. On Amazon it is $209.99 – and if you buy all the sets separately it comes to around $170 or so, I think. But you wouldn’t have the nifty packaging. If you have all the Blu-Rays – you have this set. This is solely for people that were waiting for the Box Set and want this packaging. That’s it. It has everything that’s been released thus far – but I’m not sure if there’s anything particularly unique to this set. Enjoy at your own cost.

REPULSION – Criterion Collection (Blu Ray)

One of the great horror films of all time. Roman Polanski’s masterful REPULSION with one of the greatest performances by an actress ever. Seriously, watch Catherine Deneuve in this. It is fucking crazy real feeling. The transfer on Blu Ray is stunning – it is filled with extras that I’ll include below – but the real key is… The Blu-Ray is cheaper than the DVD right now on Amazon! Here’s the extras:

• New, restored high-definition digital transfer with uncompressed monaural soundtrack
• Audio commentary featuring director Roman Polanski and actress Catherine Deneuve
• A British Horror Film (2003), a documentary on the making of Repulsion, featuring interviews with Polanski, producer Gene Gutowski, and cinematographer Gil Taylor
• A 1964 television documentary filmed on the set of Repulsion, featuring rare footage of Polanski and Deneuve at work
• Theatrical trailer
• PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by film scholar and curator Bill Horrigan

THE MIDDLEMAN: The Complete Series

Did you see this little miracle of a show? I didn’t. It aired on ABC FAMILY CHANNEL – a channel that I only ever watch flip by on my way to another channel, but hidden upon this inane drivel channel was apparently gold. I watched the 12 episodes that aired on this DVD and they’re great. At Comic Con – the cast did a table read of the 13th unfilmed episode, to the delight of the series’ fans that had somehow found the show. THIS is one of the shows that SyFy (I hate that btw) should pick up and start shooting. Because this show deserves to continue. The team on it at all levels does excellent work. If you haven’t seen it, do so now.

DOLLHOUSE: Season One

I haven’t seen this yet. But I’m going to give it a shot on Blu Ray sometime here soon. I watched the first episode and it left me a little cold, so I didn’t bother to tune in and endure commercials to see the rest. I heard it got much better as the show went along, and I hope to see that. Do you folks think I should check it out?

SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN: 1st Season

I haven’t watched this show – except in small doses with my nephew and it’s pretty damn good. NOW that I have the whole 1st Season I’ll have my nephew over for a few days of WebHeading Good Times! Because you know what – that’s how this show should be seen. With a kid that wants to absorb it all. Right?

12 MONKEYS (Blu Ray)

SO GOOD! OhMyGod! SO GOOD! It has been too long since I last put this film in. At least 5 years. So getting this Blu Ray – I was like… OHHHHH YEAH! 12 MONKEYS!!! Goddamn. Right? This is the sort of awesome that you delight in when Terry Gilliam is on his game and everything is firing away! This is easily Brad Pitt’s very best performance to date. He’s amazing. But everyone else is as well. Madeline Stowe – so beautiful. Bruce Willis – a fantastic madness tale there. Great great work – and the Blu Ray does it justice throughout.

DRAGONBALL: EVOLUTION

A truly truly BAAAAAAD movie. But, do you know what that is? This is a great – “WHAT THE FUCK WERE THEY FUCKING THINKING!!!” jumping around howling in painfully hysterical laughter at the stupidity of it all. A truly stunning heap of shit. The type that comes out of your ass, you look at and you start laughing. This is that.

THIS IS SPINAL TAP (Blu Ray)

Evidence of God. No, Really!

INGLORIOUS BASTARDS (Blu Ray)

GORGEOUS transfer. Beautiful. So much so that I kinda wish the print was a bit beat up. If for no other reason, than to look more like every 35 mm print or 16mm print of this that I’ve seen. The extras are of every title we’ve seen from the recent DVD release – and a couple more to sweeten the deal. Pretty damn cool to have a quote on this release’s back.

THE GREEN HORNET

I love this serial! I mean, how cool is it that a youthful Keye Luke aka Badass owner of Gizmo in GREMLINS – well, he’s KATO! Doesn’t that rock? What is even cooler – is that this version of THE GREEN HORNET is actually more action packed than the Bruce Lee TV Show. Great serial.

THE 10th VICTIM

Before there was WANTED, there was THE 10TH VICTIM. And WANTED kicks its ass. But Ursula Andress at this time… Holy shit hot! Not smoldering, but she’s red hot coals just waiting for something to be laid on to ignite. And Marcello Mastroianni is pretty damn awesome. If you like CQ by Roman Copolla, this is, in many ways, the movie in that movie. At least I think so. Nice to finally have this.

A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT (Blu Ray)

This film is one to really show off all your Blu Ray players super powers. The image quality mixed with this brilliant cinematography. It’s the stuff of dreams. Great film. That said. I’m a lazy fisherman. You know… the bobber floatie thing. But A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT made me realize.. I could never ever be a fly fisherman. I’d put someone’s eye out. By someone, I mean me. Seriously. I like 3D. I’m not gonna try that crazy cartoon whip shit. My eyes are only to be fucked by AVATAR.

THE GREEN HORNET STRIKES AGAIN

I kinda miss Gordon Jones, the actor that played the original GREEN HORNET, but Keye Luke is back and the action is at the same caliber. It is just as good as the first… with the exception for Gordon Jones.

TORSO

Sergio Martino fucking owns with this movie. I love TORSO torso torso…. This is one of those titles, that my parents had a 16mm trailer for, in the pre-Video days – so I saw the TORSO TORSO TORSO trailer a nigh infinite amount of times. When I found it on VHS – I was so excited. The transfer looks really good, and I’m hoping for a Blu Ray release soon.

EAGLES OVER LONDON (Blu Ray)

Fucking Awesome. I completely was not familiar with this film, but it is fucking great. Castellari is surprising as a filmmaker, because you know he didn’t have the financing of the major studios – and he’s in the time before computers. And the shit he comes up with seems to surprise the hell out of me. I really like it.

BIG MAN JAPAN

Just About The Greatest Fucking Thing of All Time! Seriously! One of the weirdest, freakiest, awesomest fucking things ever made. Just fucking crazy. The “True” story of the last Great Protector of Japan. Well, maybe not that great. Giggle.

AN AMERICAN AFFAIR

I have to admit, I wasn’t expecting a real movie when I put this on. I saw Gretchen Mol wrapped in an American flag sexual as hell – and well, yes she does get fucked naked and sexy as hell! But in addition to the cover selling exactly what you get… there’s a fun “coming of age” story of youth wrapped up in a bugnuts “solving of Kennedy’s assassination”!! I’m serious. It isn’t great, but it flirts with great for quite a bit.

That’s it for July. For our first week of August, I’ll be looking at FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS: 2nd Season, RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN, THE SOLOIST, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA (blu), YOU MUST REMEMBER THIS: THE WARNER BROS. STORY, MY COUSIN VINNY (Blu), DELGO, SLING BLADE, THE TIGGER MOVIE, ULYSSES, DAFFY DUCK’S QUACKBUSTERS, WOLFHOUND, THE WATERBOY (Blu), THE MYSTERIES OF PITTSBURGH, ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE, BIG IRON COLLECTION, DEMON WARRIORS, ACTORS AND SIN, THE MACHINE GIRL, THE ITALIAN JOB (Blu), ST. ELMO’S FIRE (Blu) and more!

    GREEN LANTERN was good

    by yackbacker

I think the voice acting was solid and the animation was also top-notch. I think the story was good up until the last act, when it really did become less of a movie and more a cartoon. MASK OF THE PHANTASM is still the gold-standard. GL approached greatness for me but fell a bit short in the end. Still, it's very worthwhile.

    by filmcritic3000

It took a while to find its footing but once it did, it became consistently entertaining.

And you didn't want to bother with commercials? It and "Fringe" only had 90 second commercial breaks this past season; couple that with a TiVo/DVR and you'd have barely noticed it had them.

Probably the best sci-fi film of the '90s. And you're right, Harry. Gilliam and all of the actors are hitting on all cylinders. And that crazy-ass Argentinian tango music that plays throughout the flick lingers in my head whenever I think of the film. No chance you'll answer me on this, but ... are there any new extras and featurettes on this release?

It just seemed rushed and hal, as i think harry mentioned seemed something out of top gun. wasnt quite right. ok, but not excellent. i expect better for this character and for this franchise.

Love it. I was surprised to find Eagles over London in the column. Definitely getting that one. Is Green Lantern really good? Does it have an annoying, monotonous soundtrack like New Frontier did? After all of Harry's hype, New Frontier turned out to be quite a disappointment. They left all the good bits in the book and went with the most straight-forward, mediocre elements of the original story instead. Very sad, since the animation itself was great.

I watched the first two episodes and immediately lost interest. I just don't see how they can get much out of the premise which is basically a different take on Quantum Leap. by what the duck

I feel anything Joss Whedon puts his name on is worth the watch. people bitch that Dollhouse was lame. If you look back at Buffy and Angel in their first seasons they weren't the best. joss takes time to build his shows up. if he would have had the chance for more seasons in Firefly we would be talking about it as one of the best shows ever. i don't understand you Harry everytime Joss puts something out you either won't watch it or your not sure if it's worth the watch. i read this article every week and you watch some pretty shitty things. Give joss a chance. Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dr. horrible, and dollhouse are all good things.

    by star hump

is right here in this column - A River Runs Through It. Yes, yes, 12 Monkeys is excellent. He has all the tics and affectations down to a T, but his work in River is understated and powerful. And his performance in Assasination of Jesse James was better than 12 Monkeys, too. I'd rank 12 Monkeys as his 3rd best performance. The guy can act, but he's inconsistent. When he's on though, he's on.

    S1 Dollhouse = Soup

    by tehdude

The first five episodes are pretty dull (like a weak broth), the show doesn't kick the chef up the arse until the already mentioned brilliant 6th episode (the adding of vegetables and meat). Once the plot starts to thicken you have yourself a delicious bit of TV soup to dip your mind bread into.

I'm a pretty big Joss fan, and I wouldn't recommend Dollhouse.. It goes from bad, to being pretty good. But I don't think it ever rises to great. I was very excited to see Joss doing a new TV show, but this is his weakest outing to date. I consider it a missfire, and wish it got cancelled, so the talented people behind it could move on to better projects.. If you're going to try watching it, I'd skip the first five episodes.

"Acolytes" from Fantastic Fest and "Bart Got a Room" from AFF are both out this week (and available at Best Buy brick-and-mortar stores!?!)

I'd recommend Dollhouse. The pilot sucked (as most of them do since they're just made for TV execs) but it became Joss's show immediately after. Also EVERY episode has semi-naked hotties of both sexes.

    by stabby

What is the official explanation for why Baltar did not blow up on Caprica, which was shown in the opening credits of every episode? Surely, ducking behind head Six wouldn't protect him from the blast. So, was that God protecting him or was it Head Baltar caught in the blast? Also, Baltar knowingly and willingly gave Six the nuke that blew up a colonial ship and alerted the cylons to New Caprica. This was never brought up at his trial nor mentioned again in the series, I believe.

but he did. God Six's body who knows. If i recall a later episode showed him waking up from the blast with six not around. But the nuke he gave to the other six was because head six made him do it. He loved the other six because it reminded him of real six. No one knew but him and the angles he gave her the nuke. Baltar is no saint but he does feel guilty about everything he has ever done. IF you watch the series from the beginning everything six says now really is very profound when you know the whole story.

The Tenth Victim and why Harry Knowles is an idiot

    by proman1984

The Tenth Victim, Harry. This is one of few adaptations of the greatest Science Fiction writer of all time, Robert Sheckley. It has nothing to do with Wanted, which, by the way, is unworthy to lick off this film's ball sweats. Do yourself a favor and seek out the original short story, called, appropriately enough "The Seventh Victim". Read it and read the entire Hunter/Victim series. Sheckley rules. Knowles is a douche.

Fair enough, but watching a whole tv season is different than watching a 90 minute film. I will give you that Harry does watch a lot of crap. Also, I think Harry is on record as not being a huge Whedon fan. Lastly, I am genuinely curious why Whedonites are such a rabid fan base. Even Star Wars geeks don't praise Lucas the way Whedonites defend their savior. No other screenwriter seems to have such a following.

Grindhouse: Theatrical Cut Available on Netflix Streaming!!!!

    by henry fool

Just thought I'd let y'all know that the double feature, theatrical cut version of Grindhouse is available for viewing over Netflix Instant Streaming service.

It's not an HD quality stream but it's still looks all right. I'm watching it on XBOX Live on a 61" Samsung with 1080p resolution. The quality of the picture is a little blurry but not bad and its in letterbox format. The grainy style the film was shot it makes it watchable in this format.

I'm one of the few who saw this one in the theater and will always maintain that you haven't really seen this movie unless you get it in its double feature format. As far as I know, this is the first time its been available in original cut since its all too brief theatrical run.

There were stabs against pretention, and rock-and-roll hubris, sure, but it was impacting just enough that you know it's stabbing away. It doesn't seem to be doing anything else. According to the digital bits, the "Face of the Enemy" webisodes (while not terribly important) aren't included in the box set, but will be available on disk later. Read: future box set. So people want to buy it should probably wait. Then again, before you buy it you should probably realize that this show's finale was basically "Goddidit", and ended with a montage of toy robots.

Netflix has also become even less user friendly with their insistence on profiing their customers with recommendations, instead of having a logical setup to browse genres.

Their decision to eliminate entirely the "new releases this week" section that gave customers release dates is truly mindboggling.

Still, I don't expect Blockbuster to be around for too much longer so I won't sign up for their online rental plan. Going into a Blockbuster now is like going into a ghost town of suck.

Tourchwood >= BSG due to consistency

    by eguang

Granted the best episodes of BSG are awesome and better than the best episodes of Torchwood, Stargate, etc. But BSG has more boring episodes than any other sci fi series and those outweight the good episodes. Other Sci Fi series are not serialized so they follow a formula. this way, even if the episodes are boring it is still less boring than the episodes of BSG that were boring.

    why BSG finale sucked, IMHO

    by eguang

I get the idea of the show runner and I am ok with it. God did it!, fine, the Gods are playing with humans like if we were inside the Greek Mythology, fine, etc, etc. But for me the BSG finale sucked because of the bad execution from film making perspective. Why if this is a series finale would you film scenes that look pointles (ie flash backs), slow, and boring. Why not make the last 3 hours to be intense and suspenful like the good episodes of BSG were (and also like, the best episodes of 24, Lost, etc). Granted, the people that are anti-religious would still cry foul to the idea of having religion somehow involved but they could not argue about the intensity of suspence of the finale. The way it ended up executed, it pissed off the anti-religious people and the people like me that wanted an intense episode that flows with action, acting, good music, good story, etc. Maybe they tinkered too much with the episodes in the editing room.

    by rben

was that there was never any explanation as to why Catherine was the way she was. Which of course made the movies way scarier (and perhaps frustrating to an average viewer who had to be like WTF?) They should have called it REPRESSION. (too obvious). I saw it years ago as a kid and even then i was blown away by Polanski. Somehow i don't think i'll see this as a rental at BB so i guess that's one more thing for me to buy. (damn you childhood!)

not much with the character development with Hal Jordan, which means they may not do much with his development in the live action movie. Although it has such a great SF backdrop that i would think it would be hard to screw up (although this is Hollyweird so who knows?) I also had to laugh at the poster who said that BB was a ghost town. I hardly ever rent from them and the only reason i did the other night was to rent Green Lantern and Wonder Woman animated movies that i didn't see on the list of movies available at Red Box. (5.00 rentals at BB when you can usually get copies of most movies for like 10 bucks on Amazon. WTF?) Red Box is good although selection is limited and if you see scratches on the disc, guareentee yourself a frustrating night (although at only a buck a rental it's not much of a risk innit?)
