Cool News
A look at FINAL FANTASY looked like at SIGGRAPH!
Hey folks, Harry here. This footage looks pretty good. If you go and download the mpgs, I recommend just grabbing the second one. It's clearer and larger on the stuff that counts! That blinking girl is creepy! I'm still hoping that we'll hear some coolnews on ILM's FRANKENSTEIN out of SIGGRAPH... One can hope ya know!
At Siggraph '99 this week, Squaresoft was showing off some of their
FINAL FANTASY movie.
I personaly can't wait to see this movie. I love the Pixar flicks, and
Ants was great, but I'm dying to see
what a CG feature out of Japan can look like!
Here's a link to two very short clips, only about 10 secs long, but
enough to start the drool flowing.
Both clips are virtually the same footage, Clip #2 is much better
quality, so go for that one.

I'm looking forward to this. Full CG animation with a grown-up storyline. From these clips (VERY Shakey) and the early ones, I am having a hard time thinking that it is only CG. I'm sure Square has had planty of models come in to replicate the movements and expressions.
-
Hrm, the eye effects looked pretty good there... Limited area means improved look, tho. I've always been impressed by what the FF series has done visually on its respective consoles, and I'm excited to see what they can do with actual film. Semi-off subject here, but I hope Harry has played through FF7, one of the defining nerd experiences of the 90's.
And don't get started on some tangential discussion about how FF7 sucks, just take ten quick breaths and chill.
-
A grown-up storyline ? Don't count it. The CGI will be wonderful but expect the script to be close to the game's : a poor rip-off of classic Sword and Sorcery sagas, simplified to be understandable by all braindead anime fans.

There are currently eight numbered games in the Final Fantasy series. Each has no relation the the rest. Each has its own heroes and its own villains. Each is unique.
The film will also be unique.
The story will strong and compelling. You will care, and you will cry. You will love.
And, the series has progressed far beyond the midevil realm. The later games take place in a world beyond our own time.
The film will echo this. There will be no knights or dragons.
There will be Grey. -
I guess it's not Final Fantasy 7, because we have not heard any reports about Leo DiCaprio doing the voice for Cloud. I just hope the movie has a lot of save points.

It's NOT out of Japan, it's out of HAWAII with American Artists
by wesley snipes
As I understand it, the movie being animated at Square's Hawaii studios, which is stocked with a bunch of North American artists. They were recruiting (and perhaps still are) a while ago. The directors are Japanese though.

Final Fantasy games are great in gameplay, story, and graphics so the movie should rock... especially since it's done by Pixar. The clips look really sweet. And for the idiot who said "braindead anime fans": you must not watch much anime. The story lines and subject matter are usually mature and often quite complex. Many of the best anime movies fall under the type of movie that you have to watch many times to appreciate (such as Wings of Honnemaise and Ghost in the Shell). So I suggest you actually do some research before you insult a certain genre of movies and their fans. And that's the bottom line. Baron out.

Wow its looking cool! Its great to see that the CGI is looking great and there is a nice moody feel to it so far. This movie is going to be excellent. Just as long as the story does hold up! Im looking foward to seeing some huge ass summon spells on the bigscreen! And more importantly some really really good charecters! you WILL laugh and cry and such!
-
I think that there were probably actors used for movements, but that not withstanding, it looks great! And although I have not had the privledge of playing most of the games (only FF1/4 & FF7), I have always been impressed by the type of storylines, and the graphics at the time they were released. If the movie has any of the depth & twists that FF7 & (apparently) 8 do, it should be good - tho I think they should remain in the S&S genre. And I can't wait to see their summoned creatures/magic effects . Anyone have an expected release date?

I just got the new ELECTRONIC GAMING MONTHLY magazine. It will be on newsstands later this month.
In it, there's a bit on the upcoming FINAL FANTASY MOVIE.
Here are some of the people lending their voices to the FINAL FANTASY MOVIE:
Alec Baldwin, Ving Rhames, Ming-Na Wen, James Woods, Donald Sutherland, Steve Buscemi, and Peri Gilpin.
I also found a promotional video for the FINAL FANTASY MOVIE online. It's test footage and a lot clearer than the Siggraph footage.
It can be found here:

This is the greatest CGI I have EVER seen. -
I have heard 2 possible times for release, Summer next year or the Summer the year after. I heard once that it takes place in New York. From what we've seen so far, it looks like they have a LONG way to go, I'd guess probably 2 years. I think this is going to coincide with the release of FF9 which will be for the PSX NOT the PS2.
-
This crap smells of having NO STORY. And the CGI looks like a videogame. Just because it's purporting to be an "adult" film doesn't mean it's any better (or any worse) than any OTHER crap with NO STORY. And it doesn't mean this film will make a lot of money, WHICH IT WON'T. YAWN. Give me "Election" ANY day!
-
The film will be released in 2001. It will have a story. It will follow a man by the name of Grey. It will not take place in New York. The Final Fantasy series does not take place on an Earth with continents arranged as we know it.

I think Costello's an idiot. I can't wait for them to make more of these Japanese cgi flicks. I would like to see some naked Japanese cgi chicks. Yes, bring on the cgi babes. One more thing: I think Jeff Costello is an idiot.

Ok, Ok. Quiet please.
Anime dead brainers?? Ever watched any?? I think not. Ghost in the Shell?? Battle Angel Alitta?? Ninja Scroll?? Thought provoking and very adult. Given current anime smaller scall productions I think this should not be an issue. The Hollyweed smell may get attached and wreck it of course... Akira?? Every watched it?? Do it. There are no brainers out there (Dominion Tank Police etc) but damn they are good fun. From the clips posted the visuals are quite good (quality of the mpg's suggests dubious origins) I would say this movie is quite some way off yet. I feel if you found any of the title's I listed brain dead, you probably failed to understand them at all. -
Also, if you found Neon Genesis Evangelion, Vision of Escaflowne, Perfect Blue, or Serial Experiments Lain to be "braindead," then there is something SERIOUSLY wrong with you.
-
ehem... it's "medieval"... Sorry, just a little pet peeve of mine.
-
Wait a minute - who ever said that PIXAR was doing this??? Can anyone confirm this?
-
Here's what I've been able to figure out about this beast. It's being developed on the West Coast by Square USA and is targeted at an American audience. This is NOT a Japanese piece that's being translated. It's also not exactly anime, although with Japanese digital artists on board, it's inevitable that there will be an anime feel to it, although Square is trying to move away from that in the FF series. Square's intent is to create a film using photorealistic CGI. No one's said a word about the script, but early rumor has it that the 20-minute "Summon Bahamut Zero" sequence may be trimmed to reduce the film's running time.
-
Yes there is a "Summon Bahamut Zero" sequence. It isn't being cut but is being augmented by making it 3D. Unfortunately this means having to lug out those nerdy 3D glasses for that part of the show.
I know a guy that works there and he gave me a tour when I was in Hawaii. The 3D sequence is something to behold. -
CG being done by studio Square, a sub of Squaresoft.
-
Square is definitely hiring for this project. Send your demo reels to them for a very real chance to work on this film. They were recruiting more actively at SIGGRAPH than any other studio.
-
Allright, after skimming the posts here I thought I'd lend a little more info to everyone out there.
I cannot comfirm this information as fact but here is what I've heard.
The SGI is being done in Hawaii by Square of America working with their overseas counterpart. As far as I know they are still recruiting since the animation is taking so long.
The story is supposed to take place on THIS Earth in the year 2065 or something like that.
Square has not yet decided if magic will play a role in the movie (though they probably have decided by now).
The movie will be like the games in that the story and characters are all unique and separate from the games/OVA that came before.
Also, I'd like to point out that the movie will supposedly showcase some of the best CG out there, I've seen a test clip of animation and the models are extremely realistic. In fact many CG animators have looked at the clip npt realizing at first that the characters where CG. So I'd say its at least 'slightly' better then videogame graphics. (not that the short clips posted on this site give much to go off of for the other comments out there).
So far I've heard little on the actual story aside from the main character's name will be Grey and the part about it taking place on Earth in 2065. there was mentions of some rather good production art of 'Hell on Earth' sequences. -
Hello anime fans. Please continue to send me your nice emails. And to thank you, here is the storyline for Final Fantasy, that is as you will see "very adult" : Near future, another planet (but this is obviously a metaphor of our world. This is a very adult story). The Hero, a handsome guy with long red hair who looks like a transgender (did you ever notice that most of these manga-anime-videogames heroes all look like they came out of a dragqueen disco ?)arrives in a decayed town. The world looks like a desert (there is a very strong ecologic theme in this story, as in all anime-manga-video game crap. Basically the message is : don't litter. But it is ok to use huge sword-handguns to waste everybody though). In the ruins of the city our "hero" meets The Girl (she is "cute" and looks like she is fourteen. This is basically because we want to give our good anime fans a feeling of male superiority towards these strange creatures called "women". Forgive them, they like cgi girls).
The Girl explains to our Hero that the balance of the universe is in great danger. A Bad Guy is using bad bad magic to poison the nice planet. Luckily, after meeting several nice sidekicks (a cute pink rat, a cute dwarf, two cute twin sisters), our Hero battles the Bad Guy. The Bad Guy looks exactly like our Hero (same clothes and Boy George haircut, same face but he has a scar and a sly grin). Hero summons some great magic that he has learned from one of his sidekicks. A CGI dragon appears and eats the bad guy. During the battle, The cute Girl is killed. Hero cries (a single tear) as trees start to grow all over the planet. Too bad she will never have the chance to see this. It is very sad. Mesa cries a lot.
End of FF.
