Comic Con: Dismemberment, Jedi Death And Bounty Hunters To Attend More Adult Second Season Of CLONE WARS!!

Published at:  Jul 24, 2009 9:01:57 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

I still haven’t been in Comic Con’s Hall H this year, but the Hollywood Reporter’s James Hibberd’s in there right now, and he reports “Clone Wars” is headed in a new direction for season two:

“Season two we had to develop the series we started it like typical cartoon,” says series director Dave Filoni. “For season two, we made it a lot more intense ... Little more violent. Villains are evil ... We have to kill Jedi ... People start losing limbs in season two.”

Find all of Hibberd’s story, which includes news of the return of a rocketpack-sporting icon here.

Can't wait for the full season 1 to come out on DVD instead of the piecemeal way they've been selling them (3-4 episodes at at time). This is really good Star Wars TV. Something that many of us have been waiting for since we were kids. Put away your bitter feelings about the prequels and hatred towards Lucas and enjoy this one!

The Clone Wars feature film, it's a mistake. The Clone Wars feature film was simply a television pilot that played on the big screen. The show gets better as it goes on. How many tv pilots that you've seen that are balls out awesome coming out the gate? Not many. Most shows improve over time. Watch the very first episode that focuses on a Yoda solo mission and you'll be sold on the series.

a sequel to the original films will not happen. Lucas says the ROTJ is the last chapter. Why? Thw whole point of Anakin and Luke's story was to destroy the Sith and the Empire. Fighting Cloned Emporers, and an Empire without Palpatine and Vader is not interesting. That's why Lucas lets other people write the E.U. novels, comic books, etc. None of it matters, it's not canon, and Lucas gets to collect the checks from us who buy copies of the Thrawn trilogy... Officially, Episode 6 is the end. All the rest is just glorified fan fiction that Lucas gets to profit from.

Doesn't mean The Clone Wars sucks. The Star Wars universe is big and detailed. We've been waiting to see the Clone Wars ever since Obi Wan first mentioned them in A New Hope, and the prequels didn't show us very much of them. Are there any huge mind blowing surprises from the Clone Wars? Of course not, but it's a well made well executed story.

    Clone Wars "movie" vs. series.

    by beastie

For the Clone Wars movie, it was as if the creators of the show compiled the 3 worst episodes and edited them together as a film. Even the Jar-Jar episodes of the show are better than that crap. The show, on the other hand, is extremely fun, at times, and intriguing at others. The reason for it's existence, beyond the obvious money making opportunity, is because the Clone Wars were supposed to be epic and not an afterthought that happened between films. By making this a series, we get the feel of seeing an entire galaxy at war and see how this war effected everyone. That's how I look at it.
I would, however, love to see some more movies that are just produced by Lucas. I see his point in not making sequels to the originals as he says that he saga is about Anakin and Anakin is redeemed and dies in Jedi. So, maybe they could start a new series based on something like the Legacy comics. Or do the Old Republic. In the right hands, like Whedon, Ron Moore, or Abrams, we could have a great new series of films.

    by wowsah156

His statement doent mean anything. Will Lucas allow Filoni to flesh out the respective Sith and Jedi philosophies and their reasons for their conflict in the cartoon? Will we get to see Jedi going up against proper villians and opponents?

Genndy's clone wars had more depth and and pathos in a four minute segment than the entire season of Filoni's toy advert for Lucas/Hasbro.

    by savagedave

Clones vs Droids....you're supposed to care why exactly? Deep down you know that Lucas wrote that original line about the clone wars as some throwaway thing that would never go any further. Now he's desperately trying to flesh out the idea with whats left of his imagination, knowing that he could shit in a star wars bucket and people would still pay for it.

Would Have Been More Interesting If...

    by wrath4771

They centered the show aorund Jedi we had never seen before. Sure they more than likely would have bought it when Order 66 comes down, but at least we wouldn't have known exactly when they would die (would have made their missions more interesting since we wouldn't have known if they bought it then or later) and they could have even done a big surprise and had one of them survive Order 66.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Watching those made me realize why I liked star wars in the first place, after being totally disappointed by the prequel movies. Storm Troopers were badass all of a sudden, people were getting killed left and right, the characters were much more memorable. This stupid CG version doesn't capture any of that as far as I'm concerned. It actually pisses me off, because now if you mention the "CLone Wars cartoons", people automatically assume you're talking about the shitty new ones.

    Wrath4771 - Surviving Jedi

    by spud mcspud

I just got done reading SHATTERPOINT by Matthew Stover (hands down the best Star Wars author - he's fucking AWESOME), and that fleshes out the CLone Wars waaaaaay better than either series did. That said, the Clone Wars adult novels and the post-Order 66 novels are just brilliant stuff - all the darker stuff we grown-up SW fanatics want is in there, and the visuals are way better for me because they're in my head. In your own head is ALWAYS going to be where the best Star Wars movies are. Grab some decent Clone Wars and post-Clone Wars novels and get stuck in. And ESPECIALLY anything by Matthew Stover - who novelisation of REVENG£E OF THE SITH made me think I must have seen the shit version on a really fucking fantastic movie, because the novel is just amazing. I have no idea how deep my despair would have been had I read Stover's novelisation first, THEN saw the movie. Fuck - he even makes Darth Emo Bitch frightening again! That's REALLY saying something after that big gay "NOOOOOOO!!!" at the end of the movie.

"What... about Padme? Is... she... alright?"

"It seems... in your rage... you killed her."

No, it seemed in Uncle George's fucking dotage, decent dialogure is always the first casualty of a new STAR WARS movie. Bantha poodoo motherfucker.

    by d.vader

"Will Lucas allow Filoni to flesh out the respective Sith and Jedi philosophies and their reasons for their conflict in the cartoon? Will we get to see Jedi going up against proper villians and opponents?" Well, if you watch the trailer for Season 2 (dunno if its online yet or not...), you'll see that Darth Sidious hires a bounty hunter to steal a Jedi Holocron. That's right, a HOLOCRON, those cubes of knowledge that are all over the Expanded Universe involving secret knowledge and whatnot. What would a Sith want with a Jedi holocron? Beats me, but I'm sure it will, like you wished, flesh out some of the Sith and Jedi philosophies. Also, the trailer shows the appearance of some more Mandalore warriors working behind the scenes. Looks like the remnants of the Mandalore culture may be making things difficult for the already stretched Jedi Order.

    by jjwalrus

but because it's one of the prequels it's not cool to like it. The truth is, ROTS is an awesome movie where basically all the cool shit happens. So much so that I think that someone who had never seen SW before could skip TPM and AOTC, see the rest and still get the whole story. In the same way that ROTJ has a little better reputation then it deserves because it's part of the classic trilogy, ROTS has been undeservedly downgraded by the fans because it's one of the prequels...

Not even Boba Fett can save it in my eyes. Bland and uninspired and uninspiring. The main characters are bores. I don't care who wins the epic struggle (since the main good guy later becomes the main bad guy who the HELL am I supposed to root for? And that's the main problem with it). No good characters that make you laugh and cry, like Luke and Han and Chewie and Leia. Screw Lucas. IS EVERYONE HERE ON CRYSTAL METH OR SOMETHING...?

    by doublefantasy

Revenge of the Sith... BORING?! The Cllone Wars... AWFUL?! R we living on the ame planet? Star wars is pure unadulterated escapism, fantasy and fun fun fun. I was there at the originals and im still here now. I really, really dont get all you weird, pessimistic folk. And to the guy who complained that ROTS wasnt dark enough and didnt have any adult themes in it...

    WHAT?!

Being burned alive, choking your pregnant wife, killing kids and the overthrow of a republic by a dictatorship isn't adult themed?!

    I DONT GET IT.

One comment about ESB and the new series

    by lockesbrokenleg

Why does the Empire even need to use bounty hunters? They are an EMPIRE! Why is Boba Fett suddently a better tracker than a well trained Imperial officer? Don't get it.

I wanna see a lightsabre put in somebody's...

...mouth, then ignited, right through the back of their head. I was hoping for that on Revenge of the Sith. Please make it happen, George. That would be cool.

I think that bounty hunters would be used by the empire because of their connections in the galaxy. It's like the military using private contracters which happens in this day and age very often. For instance, an informant would not necesserily talk to an imperial officer but maybe would a bounty hunter. And bounty hunters track prey for a living, existing in and out of the law - imperial oficers trained at the academy just wouldnt gain the same experience in the field as bounty hunters. And because bounty hunters are the tits. 8-)

Vader did want the Imperial presence at Cloud City kept secret to lure Luke in. Plus, he knew Fett's history with Solo, and he knew Fett would quickly find him

for those who love the Tartakovsky series...

    by jjwalrus

and hate the new one... You remind me of the haters who love the British Office and loathe the American version. Both are good. Tartakovsky's version was nice and accomplished what it set out to do. To be honest, I never enjoyed Tartakovsky's style. I didn't think it really lent itself to Star Wars well but overall I enjoyed his micro series. I like both but I love the new Clone Wars series so much better. Really, it's okay to like Star Wars again! It really is. You don't have to keep saying that Lucas raped your childhood to keep your geek cred.

It's not about geek cred. It's about sequences like Grievous running down the building, chasing the elevator, looking particularly badass as he did so. It's about the sequence where Mace Windu single-handedly takes apart an entire BATTALION of battle droids with nothing more than his mastery of the Force. And the fact that nothing in the new CLONE WARS series has come close to that greatness.

Sure, it's very watchable. There is some funny stuff about how dumb battle droids are. The action geography onscreen is great - you can see who is aiming at who, and where. There's some great character work - loved the bottle episode where the clones and Kit Fisto are drifting in a pod, waiting for rescue. The animation, in my opinion, IS better than the previous Clone Wars - I prefer the CGI, and the design is nice.

But there just isn't that badass spirit that Tartakovsky's had - the idea that one Jedi Master can destroy a whole field of droids. It's all very cute and cuddly and perfect for the 6 year olds, but then - so was Tartakovsky's, AND it managed to be more the Star Wars that we adult fans want to see than this new version.

It's not about geek cred. It's about Filoni playing it safe, but Tartakovsky giving us more of what we REALLY wanted to see.

    hey spud

    by jjwalrus

I understand what you're saying. Believe it or not I actually felt that some of the Superman-ish stuff (like Windu destroying all those droids) actually diminished that series. I tried to look past the design (which I didn't like), but the Jedi as almost omnipotent Supermen didn't work for me. I didn't find Greivous or any of the bad guys scary either. That said, I enjoyed Tartakovsky's version, but like Filoni's so much more. I don't understand this knee jerk reaction to love one and absolutely hate the other by some...

    spud one more thing...

    by jjwalrus

For whatever reason, I feel Filoni's version captures the spirit of Star Wars better. I'm sure that I'll get blasted for saying that, but Tartakovsky's version just never felt right to me. Again, that being said I don't hate it.
