Updated! Comic-Con '09: Disney Panel! Zemeckis on Roger Rabbit 2! TRON: LEGACY Concept Art!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Comic-Con 2009 officially (and I stress officially) starts with Disney’s 3-D panel with the promise of TRON, ALICE IN WONDERLAND and A CHRISTMAS CAROL.
Upon entering the hall the first thing that happened to me was a trampling as Twilight Moms physically pushed me aside in their dash to the front of the hall. I guess the call of Edward and Jacob was strong. That was all forgiven when I was handed a pair of 3-D glasses a FLYNN’S ARCADE Token. Awesome. On the back is says “Home of Tron.” I love you Comic-Con!
There’s a new movie-theater sized screen above the panel now and all the square screens hanging from the ceiling for the cheap seats are new as well, silver-backed and 3-D.
The presentation started with a “Put on your 3-D glasses now” and gave us a Dolby 3D countdown which got massive cheers from the audience.
I'll flesh this out after the panel ends (still continuing) but I wanted to start with this, straight from Robert Zemeckis' mouth:
He couldn't confirm or deny ROGER RABBIT 2... BUT he said if it DID happen that all the 2D toons would REMAIN 2D. That doesn't mean there wouldn't be 3-D animation (Pixar characters maybe?), but he wanted us to know that he's not upgrading the characters.
Stay tuned for pics and further panel details... Burton's talking now... TRON up next!
TRON: LEGACY the official title of the sequel. From Jeff Bridges: "It's basically a story about a son's search for his father. The first TRON... when we made that in '81 there was no internet. Cell phones were these big things you carried around in a suitcase! So what you saw was so new and fresh... I can guarantee you'll get the same kind of pop with this one!"
Now here's pics of TRON art!

Hoo, that AVATAR footage knee-capped my Disney coverage, but let's talk for a second about the footage they showed from TRON.
It's all 2-D, live-action footage that began with an aerial shot of FLYNN'S ARCADE, with a voice-over from Bruce Boxleitner telling Flynn's son (Garrett Hedlund) that he promised to get in touch if he ever found out anything about the disappearance of his father. Well, he just got a phone call from Flynn's Arcade, a building that has been left standing, but has been empty for 20 years.
So Hedlund rides at motorcycle up to the abandoned building, walks in and sees bank after bank of old school cabinet arcade games covered in plastic. The place is dusty, full of cobwebs, but clearly FLYNN's ARCADE. Hedlund flips a switch and all the games turn on, electricity restored. The jukebox kicks up, too, and it's some very familiar background music from the original film's arcade scenes.
Hedlund walks down the isles of arcade games drawn to TRON, the stand-up game we all remember playing. There's a neon sign above it that has FLYNN's logo and underneath it: THE HOME OF TRON.
Hedlund smiles, obviously with positive remembrances of the game. He pulls out a quarter and plugs it in, but it slips through, rejected. I always hated that shit, but it works out for Hedlund. He picks up the quarter and sees there are grooves cut into the concrete... The arcade game marks a secret passage, against a hidden door. Hedlund opens it and enters the darkness, the game (attached to the door) closes shut behind him.
The footage looked sharp, the templates gold and black. They just wrapped photography last week, so no footage yet from inside TRON. They did mention that the TRON world is not connected to the internet, but on its own server, evolving in isolation for 20 years.
Okay, off to a screening. Pics from the panel when I get back!

this has needed to happen for a long time
-
Roger Rabbit 2 should have 2D, 3D and stop motion animated characters. It could focus on racism or obsolescence where the 3D characters are pushing aside the 2D ones. <p> Oh, what the hell do I know. Just make it happen Zemeckis.
-
It's not going to get better with a sequel...
-
unfortunately the expectations on RR2 would so high, no matter how great it was, it would still be a disappointment. doesn't anyone remember INDY IV??? So if the cartoon character are still 2-D, then are the humans gonna be motion capture? Fuck that!!
-
And so will we!!<p>Just over 2 1/2 hours to go. Bring spare underpants!
-
I think forgot the both number.
-
Shitty title. But better than just renaming it Tron I guess.
-
...tonight, I bet every busboy at every T.G.I. Friday's in a fifty mile radius will get laid tonight...probably take half a dozen home just to say they did it.
-
Didn't Comic-Con "officially" start with the Hobbit panel? Lame as it was.
-
and terminate all the Twilight fans.
-
and terminate all the Twilight fans.
-
I'd love to see Toon Town as depicted now, with the 2D characters of old living in poverty in ghettos and slums, and the more popular 3D characters of Pixar and Dreamworks living it up in their 3D expensive palaces, the money making characters throwing the odd dollar to the poor Betty Boop or Felix the Cat (whoring their bodies out just to make ends meet)... Of course, it would need to be stylishly very different, not the 50's noir of the original film.. It could work..
-
How did Doc and Publick hook up with Jim Foetus?
-
Well at least Zemekis is smart enough to know that converting 2D animations to 3D would be a colassal fuck up of the highest order. I now have a glimmer of hope this project gets legs. And fuck Pixar.
-
You don't mean that.
-
. . . now sounds more like Bob Hoskins'.
-
http://tinyurl.com/np4ywg <p> That's live. A clip of tron apparently just finished playing. <p> In the clip: We see Sam Flynn enter his father's decrepit arcade. He walks though the dusty room, while period-metal plays. He walks toward the back of the arcade, where a Tron machine is running. Puts a quarter in. It falls out. The cabinet swings off the wall, and Flynn steps behind it, presumably into the game world of Tron.

...there will be an article stating that AVATAR not only fucked eyeballs, but that the entire audience was impregnated and they all hope to carry Cameron's child to full term in their skulls.......someone will immediately post that Cameron is a hack and hasn't made a good movie since T2......then someone will say "fuck you! T2 is Cameron's WORST movie!"...and on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on. I'll still show up though...
-
-yeah, you know YOU KNOW where that comes from!

Fucking your eyeballs! <P> http://tinyurl.com/nb97tm <P>

Is stupid. Should have stuck with TR2N or TRON 2.

AND his SINS of mocap will be redeemed, as he was maturing the technology to do it. Next step: a mocap Cristohper Lloyd, and someone standing in for a 3D CGI Marty mcFly, on BTTF 4.

I like Tron Legacy. It would have been a marketing mistake to call Tron 2...Tron.

...they should do a sequel to The Black Hole while Maximilian Schell is still working. <p>The Black Hole is visually great, with a number of eerie sequences like the heroes exploring the exterior of the darkened ship parked at the edge of the hole, Anthony Perkins getting killed and the 'hell' sequence at the end. <p>The script is underwritten and the cartoon robots are weak points but Disney really should look into reviving The Black Hole in some way.

Good God, what pathetic human beings -- middle aged Twilight fans. Just disgusting. I will give the tween girls some latitude as they are young and should develop better taste as they get older. But the moms who eat this Twilight shit up are vile and stupid. Have these women so devalued their own lives that they need to cling to the same shit their daughters like to feel hip or worth anything. Buy the Buffy DVDs, it's the same shit just done with wit and talent.

Roger Rabbit was a blast. And a technological marvel, too.

...future moms who grew up reading TWILIGHT and still love it. They're cool...they will be on AICN in fifteen years bitching about the remake...
-
is the worst thing than twilight moms. <p>dont disagree,u know its the truth.
-
Good point, though I would hope in 15 years they would love it for nostalgia and not for it's alleged quality.

The Success Of Twilight Reveals Some Very Troubling Things About
by LaserPants
The success Of Twilight reveals some very troubling things about women. Specifically, that a vast majority of women don't like sex. <br><br>Twilight is a romantic fantasy where no sex ever happens. Where the man, clearly gay and model attractive, fawns and worships at the plain girl's feet -- but doesn't want to have sex with her. The women swoon! I've heard friends of mine, women of all ages, who I thought knew better then to fall for this crap, passionately defend the novel it as a perfect distillation of "what women really want in a man," or "how women feel and think." Really? REALLY?! So what women want, in short, is a romantic-platonic non-sexual relationship with a model-attractive gay man who doesn't want to have sex with them, but worships the ground they walk on and will do anything they say.<br><br>Terrifying.<br><br> At least male fantasies make sense -- we want hot chicks to fuck us in all sorts of dirty ways. Simple. Obvious. Honest. I have no idea what the hell is wrong with the vast majority of women, but, there it is -- a completely deranged, repressed, and superselfish non-libido. Sad.<br><Br>Now, of course, this doesn't go for all women. I have just as many female friends who think Twilight is shit and who love sex, so, theres still hope. But for the vast majority? Totally screwed on a profound level.
-
on a lighter note.
-
You know, Black Tron.
-
...it's really intended for twelve year old girls...who feel, and should feel, very ambivalent about boys and sex. They want all the sentimental gooey stuff, but they don't really want to be penetrated by a hairy Burt Reynolds type. Not defending the quality of the material...just the intended audience...

"Wow. The clip from Twilight is quite literally porn for 13 year old girls. There's no acting, just posing and pouting."
-
Yea, it sounds like a Stephenie Meyer book title.
-
I normally disagree with every post you make on a nearly primal level...<p> But your observations about women are completely accurate. Scarily. I'm not sure I've ever met a woman, at least one under 30, that wasn't slightly insane.
-
Iron Jim returns....

Sesame Street is the gold standard of children's television. Twilight sucks.

all the bloggers in there. So we wait, then. :((

but it's twelve hells of a lot better than "TR2N." How do you even say that? "Truh-toon?" I hope someone got fired over that idea.
-
"How many of you have ever wanted to go to another planet?" <p> Then, "Are you ready to go to Pandora?" <p> Earsplitting noise followed.

True, but I'm not talking about the response of 12 year old girls, I'm talking about the LEGIONS of rabid female fans in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and up. Its terrifying.
-
Anyway, judging from G4TV's (delayed) live-blog, the movie's plot sounds kinda like MAN PLUS meets POCAHONTAS meets maybe DRAGONRIDERS OF PERN?<br><br> I hope at least some of the footage finds its way online, but I'm worried about Cameron's "that's all you're gonna see until December." And I hope that the visual freshness and otherworldliness the film allegedly has doesn't disappear in a standard projection. There's literally no 3D theatres around where I live, and I have no desire to drive for several hours just to see a movie (not even one such as this).

get Twilight the fuck out of comic con fo Christ's sake...
by The Amazing G
I 100% support a Roger Rabbit 2 though
-
would be a good title that or Digital Destruction. we all know the sequel should be about toons losing jobs to digital counterparts. would be funny to see a cgi replacment roger rabbit. The real roger is a bum now, and toon town is nothing but violence and slumsville. Highways happened without doom. Eddie should be dead though or really old. I mean cartoons don't die unless they are dipped.
-
AWSOME idea.
-
Savage Garden will be performing at the Twilight panel....just because it makes sense. "Savage Garden: the Movie"..Hmmmm...Somehow make it romantic...Vampires + Alice in Wondeland...That's the pitch. Could work...Could also bring the white male even more closer to extinction...

Call me if you need any other titles shat out.

-
Wasn't one of the ideas of the first movie that a parallel universe existed with it's own laws of reality/physics? Where design wasn't based on function per se, but simply as an expression of style? Where the control of a lightbike was just a neon bar, and not elaborate controls like a real mechanical motorcycle? From this artwork, it looks life Flynn infected the world of Tron with WAY too much real world. And not only is that antithetical to the first movie, it's kind of mundane and unimagninative.
-
I wouldn't care for another Indy 4 experience.
-
All that I have seen from Tron: Legacy so far (which is relatively little), I like. The only thing I don't is that Wendy Carlos isn't doing the music (as far as I know). When the imagery got tired in the original, it was the remarkable music that kept Tron alive for me. I have heard little of Def Punk's, music, but even that little bit convinced me that they are not in Wendy Carlos's league. It's not a deal-killer for me, though a bit of a letdown.
-
And I shall be re-making "Krull" once I finish with the "Sword and the Sorceror" re-writes. So bust out your action figure price guides boys an' girls...Merchendise is gonna be MOVIN'!

because just a few days ago, when he was hyping the benefits of Mo-Cap and 3D, these talkbackers, myself included were ready to go Southern Fucking Comfort on him with some fine knotted rope if he dared make RR into some 3 Fucking D, Mo-Cap shitfest. Thats Right Zemeckis...we like your shit...but don't fucking step outta line...RR is a 2D toon living amongst REAL FUCKING PEOPLE..and don't you fucking forget it.

Good to know they don't cut off electricity in USA when someone doesn't pay for 20 years. Or that nobody would break in and rob & vandalize the place. The movie really sounds futuristic!

The amazing designer Syd Mead designed the original TRON logo. Is he involved with the sequel?
