The Show Must Go On?? Michael Jackson's Concert-Not-To-Be May Soon Find Life As A Feature Film...

In a decidedly shrewd and ghoulish money grab, AEG and Sony look to be forging a deal to release a movie built around the concert Michael Jackson was putting together before his passing. Seems much video material...as much as 80 hours of footage...was captured during pre-production and rehearsals, under the direction of HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL director Kenney Ortega (who is already assembling said material into a feature length format).
Sony Pictures is close to a deal to make a feature film on Michael Jackson drawing on the 80 hours of rehearsal footage filmed for concerts Jackson was preparing to perform in London.
The studio is expected to pay north of $50 million for worldwide rights to AEG Entertainment, which owns the footage and showed it to studios last week.
The film will feature at least three videos, including an alternative version of Jackson's "Thriller," which were shot to be interstitial programming during the London concerts. The footage was meant to play in 3-D, but it's unclear as yet whether the feature film will present it that way.

The idea/hope is to release the film before year's end. After finishing up this project, Ortega is expected to roll the FOOTLOOSE remake sometime in March.

I don't think it's at all inappropriate to release the footage as a concert. Michael would certainly not feel disrespected by this move. I doubt he'll be turning over in his grave pissed that millions of people are once again enjoying his music and dance performances. The majority of young people see MJ as a freaky child abuser and are unfamiliar with what a great performer he was. This movie has the potential to change that and hopefully help create a new generation of Michael Jackson fans. I for one never got the chance to see him perform live and would be thrilled to see his last concert footage in awesome picture and sound. Anybody who wants to say this is a ghoulish move designed to do nothing more than generate box office dollars should ask themselves if they spent their money on Transformers this summer.

Um, maybe I'm dense, or maybe it's because I've played in several bands, but a movie of rehearsal footage (no matter how big the star in question is) is really about the lamest, most boring thing I could possibly imagine seeing on a big screen. Especially Michael Jackson, who, let's face it, was physically falling apart at the time this stuff was recorded. Who wants to see that crap for two hours? Ugh.

I never knew what to make of "Moonwalker." Disjointed at best, unwatchable at its worst, it still is a collection of cool parts that look neat seperately but never come together as a narrative whole. I think it was meant to top "Thriller" as a full-out feature length sci-fi, fantasy epic, but ended up more as an epic fail. Still, it screams 80s nostalgic cheese with its laser-blasting effects and Mecha-Michael craziness. I'd watch it again for memories sake. I'd like to see a good print of "Captain Eo" released too, but I'm not sure if that's possible due to the 3-D nature of it and the fact that the full experience also included in-theater effects.

I have a difficult time beliveing Jackson was relevant in the music world in 2009. Yes, he sold out 50 concerts in 5 minutes, but we all know people were coming to hear "Thriller" and "Billie Jean". He was a nostalgic act at this point. It's been speculated that at one point 1 in 10 people in the world owned the Thriller album. Fair to say. But I'm confident in believing 9 out of 10 couldn't name 3 songs off the latest record.

I stated that The Beatles are great. However, you are grossly overstating their current status, assuming that just because they are relevent to you, that this applies to the whole world. MJ Had more influence across racial and cultural barriers than The GREAT Beatles. The inner city were not affected with the death of George Harrison or John Lennon as they were with MJ. Rinse and repeat for Asia and Africa and even Europe. Some innovations that MJ contributed: The music video and the live concert.

Well..I meant geographic borders more than any symbolic borders. I don't think Jackson is anything more than he was; whatever that whole thing actually "was". My problem is I really hate pop music and consider it like a virus infecting different genre's and making it the most shitty, shallow, and utterly meaningless combination of notes and lyrics into a sanitized and purified "musical" slop (that includes the 'racy' stuff too, trite, mundane expressions of obvious sexuality, etc). Since MJ was effectively the "King of Pop" that, to me, means he was the king of the worst blight of shit on musical history since people first starting banging stones on logs.This need to paint him as being beyond that is ridiculous to anybody with a musical history beyond 1982.But since I hate pop, I'm not really a good critic for what makes for good or bad "pop" music. It all sounds soullessly contrived and repetitive to me...MJ a saint and revolutionary? Laughable. Talented? I think so yes. Crossed borders and was hugely popular all over the world? Most definitely. Victim as an adult? Also laughable (saying "we" killed him is the unthinking response of a child). Fruitcake bizarro? My comments were made in response to others that sought to diminish his influence and impact. To say that MJ's contribution to music is insignificant sounds elitist. MJ DID write a lot of his own stuff. He was a great performer, who did not play an instrument. That does not make him any less of an artist when you factor is writing, voice, and performing ability.

I recognize I really didn't and do not like that type of music so my bias is inherent but there's personal opinion and then there's hyperbole and I feel that saying MJ's contribution to music is even close to the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Prince, and even Elvis Presely is laughable. MJ,like Madonna, will never be know for musical prowess in any form. Singing, playing an instrument, etc. But when you consider performance? For that type of music, there really aren't/weren't much better American artists...

Only MJ was not a great singer by any stretch of the imagination. Not to say he wasn't good at what he did...but is he an accomplished musician? Hardly. Perhaps not even his fault...it's Pop music afterall...(I don't mean to be elitist here as it's something I strive against but I've also been a musician my entire life and I don't even consider MJ a 'real' musician...to me he was a performer. In many ways, he epitomized the word 'performer' in most all aspects of his life. But a musician, he was not. (not a bad thing at all mind you, many great artists are just performers and not musicians...nothing elitist about it).

i saw a man in a wheelchair on the street dancing to MJ's music. this was in taiwan couple days ago. he's rolling and rocking his wheelchair trying to keep up with the other dancers(this was a large group on the street). and i just cant help but wonder... how could this asian man in his wheelchair half a world away can feel MJ's love enough to want to celebrate him, while you americans living so close to him do not get him at all?

Hey I just came across this great MJ documentary called “Michael Jackson: the trial and triumph of the king of pop”. It goes in depth into Michael’s trial and debunks the various charges against him and also features interviews with people like Kanye West, Mo’Nique, and Fantasia. Right now it’s available on itunes, amazon vod, and also cable video-on-demand services. It’s really good and shows a very interesting perspective to the trial and Michael as a person. Check it out.
