News about Nora Ephron's upcoming comedy NUMBERS

Published at:  Aug 12, 1999 11:06:30 PM CDT

Well, gosh. My interest just went down. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person on the planet that thinks that Roberto Benigni is a hack, but I do. He goes from Peter Sellers to Charles Chaplin schtick and it just annoys the hell out of me. But so many people love him. I guess I must just have my head up my ass... oh well, it is really quite bright in here though...

Never sent in a message before, but I never had anything that I thought was
a hot scoop until now. Here's the deal. Numbers, the Nora Ephron film in
development. Well, turns out not only does she have Travolta, but she wants
Roberto Benigni in a cameo. Saw first half of a script draft, and this is
probably going to be her funniest film yet, something that Travolta is
aching to do. She's very excited about this, as is her sis who has been
helping her pen it a bit. Down at the Warner lot, where they're still
aching from the Eyes disappointment, they're going to be backing this film
to no end. To be continued when I have more...

I watched Grease 10,000 times! I drool every time I see you on the screen! I listen to Staying Alive 50,000 times a day!

    Harry- You are not alone

    by fairlane

Thanks for filling me in on this JT pic. I love him too. But Harry I thought I was the only one- Benini (or how you speel it) is just a pain to watch. Take a look at the Matchbox mann (or so it was called in Danish) and do like Willies - "make fist's with Your feet!!"

    Roberto Benigni

    by pjotr

Well Harry, you're not alone !
I too can't stand the sight of Roberto ! Everyone I know was raving about La Vita E Bella, but I couldn't bring myself to go and watch it because it had Roberto in it... I know it sounds stupid, but he's always SOOO over the top and he never seems to be able to tone down. When I saw how he behaved at the Oscars, I could have crawled into a hole in his place !

    thankfully, only a cameo

    by delsol

You're definitely not alone. Not only do I dislike Begnini, but I found the first half of LIB nearly impossible to sit through, the so-called funny half. Each time he said "principesa" I got more and more ill and had to force myself to sit there for that as well as the so-called touching and moving second half. The only thing that was wanted to move was my feet, but I made myself watch it. I've said it before and I'll say it again, that movie was insulting and marketing was even more so. Harvey's relatives should be turning over in their graves that he put the muscle of Miramax behind that piece of tripe.

    Roberto Benigni

    by stile

Well, I suppose I can understand why people don't like him. He is something of an Italian Jim Carrey with a touch of Chaplin and a little Keaton thrown in. Personally, I thought he was fantastic in La Vita E Bella (or, let's all stop being pretentious and call it Life is Beautiful, since very few, if any of us, are actually Italian) For those who failed to see it he really did convey a depth of emotion in a very difficult circumstance.

As far as the Oscars go, I was practically on my feet when he started climbing over the chairs, and saying that he wanted to take everyone up into the firmament and make love with them. It was the most joyous and honest acceptance of an Oscar that I have ever seen by someone clearly still amazed by the whole spectacle.

    that's how italians are...

    by p.n.c.

i guess i understand your dislike for Benigni, but first you need to understand that he is italian, and italian humor is like that. i really enjoyed "Life is Beautiful" i thought it was an excellent film, and not just commercially. i haven't seen too many of Roberto's movies, but my dad (who is a big time italian) has the italian channel which plays very loudly, might i add, and roberto appears on different variety shows and such, and my dad just loves him. and so do all the italians. but, being around italians so much, i've begun to find that their humor is very... simple, or something. anyways, i guess you just have to be aware of cultural differences. the end.

    Does Benigni ever shut up?

    by spock

I agree with Harry. Roberto Benigni is overrated. He obviously loves to do slapstick and rather "cheap" comedy. I don't understand why "La Vita E Bella" got so much attention. I never really felt much for his character, and it's obvious the entire movie was written around his comedic sketches. Also, the horror of the Holocaust is never really felt by watching this film. I've seen some of his older material, and man, does Benigni ever shut up? Can he stop shouting and yelling? Can he emote without exclamation marks all around him? C'mon, his entire Oscar ceremony appearance just shows how loud he is; he was still acting (and he almost stepped on top of Spielberg!, who was sitting behind him). Being loud and speaking bad English is not a stereotypical Italian trait; it's his and only his.

    Benigni is a weiney

    by macdaddy

I'm glad to hear this as well. The guy looks and acts like a string puppet with bit of Robin Williams and Jerry Lewis and Peter Sellers all mixed in. I have never seen LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL, but some of my friends were rooting for the Nazis after seeing Benigni. I've seen some of the Ini (pronounced EE-NEY) films on cable and don't know what the fuss is. Sure, he looks like an idiot, but I really don't have any empathy for his character (which is basically the same in all his movies, right?) Hmm, if Ephron wants to have some idiot in her movie, get Pauly Shore, he needs some work, or Adam Sandler and it should bring in the guys for her chick flicks.

i disagree. being loud and speaking bad english IS a stereotypical italian trait. and if you don't believe me, why don't you try spending a month in italy and THEN tell me otherwise.

and for all of you who...

    by p.n.c.

pronounce his name "bah-nee-nee".. it's not. the "gni" form together to make a sound difficult for americans to pronounce. it's "nyee" the "y" being gutteral from the back of your throat. just a friendly note. thank you.

    Hope its better than Michael

    by cineman

This sounds good but it better not be anywhere near as horrible as Michael. I don't know how that film did so well at the box office but for a supposed "comedy", I did not hear laughing once, unless you count when I told my friends I saw it.

    NUMBERS

    by 40slover

The person who reported on this is mistaken with one little fact. NUMBERS is a Paramount project, and not Warner Bros. The producer is based at Warner however. An easy mistake.

Geez, why's everyone getting so worked up?

    by pope buck 1

Even if you positively DESPISE Roberto Begnini (and I don't -- I like him a lot, but that's beside the point), it was clearly specified that he's just making a cameo appearance, for god's sake! You're prepared to write off the whole movie because of that?! Get over it.

    Re: Spock's comment

I agree that one did not get a true sense of the horror of the Holocaust from Life is Beautiful, but we weren't supposed to. The whole idea was that we were getting the child's viewpoint, and what makes this a great movie is that the father went to such lengths to keep the child from seeing and understanding the horror. That's what gives me chills when I see it; the possibility that the father might not be able to protect the child anymore as in the dinner scene, and the foundry scene, and of course the final scenes.

    Roberto Benigni

    by wewequilt2

I have never commented before, but your statement that you must be the only one who thought Roberto Benigni was a hack, forced me to reply. You aren't alone. He reminds me of my brother-in-law who is also Italian, but that is not the problem. My brother-in-law is totally out of control, like Mr. Benigni appears to be. My brother-in-law says outrageous things to everyone, flirts with all the young women(he's over 65), and he is constantly getting in trouble with the police for the outrageous things he does. I don't think that kind of behavior is acceptable. I did not think Mr. Benigni's behavior at the Academy Awards was acceptable.
