Warren Ellis Has Something To Do With Four (!) New Marvel Anime TV Series, Including An IRON MAN And A WOLVERINE!!
I am – Hercules!!
The brilliant funnybook writer and novelist Warren Ellis (“The Authority,” “Global Frequency,” “Planetary,” “Astonishing X-Men,” “Ignition City,” “Mek,” “Red,” “Reload,” “Iron Man: Extremis,” “newuniversal,” “Ultimate Fantastic Four,” “Ultimate Galactus,” “Ocean,” “Orbiter,” “Jack Cross,” “Ministry of Space,” “Fell,” “Gravel,” “Dark Blue,” “Scars,” “Wolfskin,” “Blackgas,” “FreakAngels,” “No Hero”), appears to be involved in scripting four (!) new Marvel Anime series, one of which deals with Iron Man and another that follows around Wolverine.
These are apparently being made for Japanese TV, but I can’t imagine they won’t find their ways to English-speaking territories if Ellis is scripting them.
Ellis’ involvement may have something to do with the success of his recent and acclaimed PG-13 animated movie “G.I. Joe: Resolute.”
Look! Press release!
Marvel Entertainment Inc. and Madhouse Present an Exclusive Sneak Peek at the Re-imagining of Marvel’s Legendary Super Heroes
MARVEL ANIME TV SERIES AT COMIC-CON
Get an Exciting First-Look at the All New Anime Iron Man and Wolverine At the Marvel Animation Panel on Friday, July 24 at 4:30 PM
CULVER CITY, CA (7/15/09) - Marvel Entertainment Inc., has partnered with renowned Japanese animation studio Madhouse (Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers) to create four all new anime versions of classic Marvel Super Heroes. Get an exciting first glimpse of two of the planned four series at this year’s Comic-Con International, the country's leading comics and popular arts convention. The Marvel Animation Panel will be held on Friday, July 24, and will include an exclusive first look at official teaser trailers for two of these new series, hosted by writer and multiple-Eagle Award winner Warren Ellis, who will appear to discuss writing the all new adventures of these re-imagined Super Heroes.
These Marvel Anime TV series are being created as a way of merging the beloved Marvel Super Heroes of western culture with the bold animation tradition of Japan. The resulting product will be four visually groundbreaking anime series featuring popular Super Heroes redesigned and repurposed as emerging from the fabric of Japanese culture. The series is expected to begin appearing on the Animax channel in Japan in spring of 2010.
The Marvel Animation Panel with run from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Friday, July 24, at the San Diego Convention Center. An autograph signing with Ellis will follow the panel at Marvel’s Comic-Con booth #2429.
Madhouse, Inc., established in 1972 with offices in Tokyo, Los Angeles and Beijing, is one of the top animation studios in the world working exclusively with some of Japan’s top anime directors. They have created many well-known titles such as worldwide hits Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D, Trigun, Tokyo Godfathers, and Metropolis, Japanese successful TV series such as “Death Note” and “Nana”, as well as Paprika (an Official Selection at the 2006 Venice Film Festival) and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2007 Japanese Academy Award for Best Film – Animation) Marvel Entertainment, Inc. is one of the world's most prominent character-based entertainment companies, built on a proven library of over 5,000 characters featured in a variety of media over seventy years. Marvel utilizes its character franchises in licensing, entertainment (via Marvel Studios and Marvel Animation) and publishing (via Marvel Comics). Marvel's strategy is to leverage its franchises in a growing array of opportunities around the world, including feature films, consumer products, toys, video games, animated television, direct-to-DVD and online.
No word yet on how many episodes will comprise each series, nor how many episodes, if any, Ellis will be scripting.
Ellis’s panel, which frustratingly runs opposite the LucasFilm and Whedon panels, will be held in room 6BCF.

Lots of evil British cursing....be sure to bring the kids!
-
You list his credits and leave out "Transmetropolitan"!? Also, I love Ellis and own a vast majority of the work he's published. Unfortunately 2/3 of his work could all be one series. Fortunately, half of that 2/3 of fucking genius! However, I fuckin' hate Marvel and hate anime, so color me unimpressed.

What the hell do you guys have against Doktor Sleepless?
by johnny smith
Is it too good for you or something? You never list it when talking about Ellis' many, many works.

I'm betting at least half of it will involve Doc Ock and disturbing metal tentacle rape. Also, all of the female Marvel characters will inexplicably grow a penis and use them to rape Spiderman!!!!

Wow. Apparently I'm so passionate about Dok I double-posted.

My bust.
-
It sounds like Ellis could be involved in reimagining and creating a new mythology for these characters
-
I just can't wait for Ben Grimm to rip out Victor von Doom's spine and use it as a replacement wang.
-
But my dickhead comic book store owner dropped it because I was the only one reading it. Fuck you Zed and Maynard's Comic Book store, and God bless Things From Another World...dot com!!!
-
Changing the name doesn't make it less lame.
-
was amazing, as was much of Ellis' writing. He will be missed.
-
Taking the time to list the majority of his best work, and you skim over "Anna Mercury?" Fer shame.
-
These will be even better.
-
..it would be nice if he actually got his comic issues out in some semblance of a schedule, before he took on more work.
-
...needs to bone up on the Ellis backlog. Left out several of his best works (imo, of course).
-
This doesn't really interest me. Resolute was rather boring, and I didnt' find it to be very well written. It was painful at times. Sitting through the Storm Shadow "7 Steps" flashback was pure misery.
Notice it also says "redesigned" regarding the characters.
I have absolutely no faith in Marvel's animation projects. They're usually rather terrible. Whoever is running that department isn't doing their properties much justice. -
Best comic series of the decade. We really need that final issue. It's been two years.

Emmy talkback, this will be, until Herc puts up the official one
by pennsydeux
Hosted by Keyser Soze, because we're gonna see a LOT of usual suspects in the next 25 minutes. Far too many of them from HBO. Not anywhere near enough for BSG.
-
That the Emmy PR guy is asking for applause when the nomination ceremony goes live?
-
Big Love, Breaking Bad, Damages, Dexter, Lost, Mad Men
-
FUCK NO MCDONNELL.
-
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Christina Applegate, Sarah Silverman (??????)
Tina Fey, Toni Collette, Mary-Louise Parker -
Seriously. I can't believe someone is putting this out to capitalize on the new movie release.
-
I missed that GI Joe thing on Cartoon Network. RE AIR IT DAMNIT!
-
This shit is better then that Jap or Pixar crap. Pure awesome and still in my DVR. I have faith in him with this project as well. Astonishing X-Men not so much.
-
With Best Comedy Show emmy nod. Yes. Again Family Guy proving how awesome it is. Even though the last season was probably its worst.
-
God that's just HORRIBLE.
-
Herc! I wanna read your reactions! BSG get nominated for Directing (as usual) but gets snubbed for writing (4 of the 5 noms in that category went to Mad Men, yawn). McDonnell snubs stings hard (that category is the same ol same ol). No FNL writing nom is a travesty. Boring, boring, boring. Not many (good) surprises this year for genre fans.
-
Um yeah... had a blast writing this Deadpool/Death Note crossover- Light pissed himself matching wits with Wade.
-
Shame, Emmys. Shame.
-
one of my top five comic book characters ever.
-
If they hadn't killed so many people. That didn't really make it more "mature".
-
I'm sorry, but if you mention ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR and don't mention DOKTOR SLEEPLESS and ANNA MERCURY, you officially need to be bitchslapped by Brock Lesnar.
-
That deserves as ass-raping by Lesnar.
-
I always felt there was too many Joes and if someone like Storm Shadow or Cobra Commander killed a few nameless ones I would be ok with it. I will killing Cobra guys was a bit unnecessary considering who died. Yet, you got the feeling that was a no fucking around GI Joe movie. I would prefered if they did kill Cobra Commander, but I guess if they want to do more they need him. I do think the deaths added more to the tone of the film though.
-
So it's going to be that japanimation/anime crap style then??? Very overrated.
-
You've got to be kidding.
FAMILY GUY gets an EMMY NOD??Yeesh, it's the Apocalypse. -
At the risk of sounding repetitive, that pilot was not only fucking AWESOME (because Michelle Forbe IS Miranda Zero), it nailed what made the GLOBAL FREQUENCY concept so great - that no matter who you are, if you are great at what you do, you may get a phone call, and Miranda Zero will ask YOU - yes, ordinary old YOU - to save the world. That pilot communicated that fact very well. And then it got shitcanned by a suit with more fucking neckties than IQ points. Fuckers.
So no matter how good this is, they've already done a perfect Warren Ellis comic onscreen, and those fuckers at the WB stomped it out of existence.
GGAAAAAARRGHHH!!! BAAAAASTAAAAAAARDS!!! -
And get Duncan Jones to do it. After how amazing MOON is, Ducan Jones HAS to do ORBITER. Just pure sci-fi epic brilliance.
-
Having the suit be in Stark's body in nanomite form is just genius. DO THAT STORY!
-
...Not like that sack-less kiddified attempt to pilfer from it in FF2: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER. THAT is why doing an R-rated story in a 12A movie will NEVER work - that story needed the kind of dark edge that TORCHWOOD - CHILDREN OF EARTH had, not that fucking primary-colours aimed-at-the-5-year-olds tone the movie had. Remake! REMAKE NOW!!!
-
It was fun, but more an excuse for Ellis to pull out the old ultra-violence and shove another of his obscure scientific theories up all our arses.
Now, Doctor Sleepless is good. I don't always understand it, but it's good.
And Global Frequency was genius stuff and needs to have more comics and another shot at TV. -
I'm of the impression that Anime fan/cosplayers are even below the geek social strata of furries. After all, the furries do get laid.
-
It wasn't as hard core as the original Marvel Comics. But it is truer to the source material than that kraptastic film about to debut. I'm only going to see it because I like most of the cast. I despise the character changes they've made in it though.
-
This is probably the offically slowest moving Talkback in AICN history.
Seriously - how many people DON'T know who Warren Ellis is?!? WHY is this TB being ignored? Other than disappearing up his own arsehole a little due to all the blind fan worship his oh-so-"alternative" fans throw at him all the time, every now and then Warren Ellis comes up with something truly awesome. Some of his Marvel Ultimates work has given ailing superheroes a new jolt of life when htey needed it - and GLOBAL FREQUENCY is everything THUNDERBIRDS would be if it were R-rated and didn't mind killing a few for the sake of the many.
So why the no-showing? There's some explaining to be done, TBers. -
school's out and most of the majority of regular TB commentors are away at sleepaway camp. ; ) Cheers!
-
fucking sell out
-
C'mon... Transmetropolitan is one of my absolute favorite comic series, and so far my favorite of Ellis' work. You mention two dozen and don't drop Transmet in there? What's wrong with you?
